Easy Homemade Fish Tacos Recipe +Video – Oh Sweet Basil

Discover the secrets to creating delicious fish tacos in the comfort of your own kitchen. From seasoning the fish to assembling the tacos, follow our step-by-step guide for the perfect homemade meal.
Cade loves fish tacos, so being the kind and considerate wife that I am😁, I worked for months to get this recipe just right! I wanted the breading to be light and flavorful and for the fish taco sauce to be perfection. This homemade fish tacos recipe is sure to be a hit for all our seafood lovers! And Cade can’t get enough of them!
What is the Best Fish for Fish Tacos?
For fish tacos, you want a white fish that is firm and mild in flavor. For this recipe, we are using cod, but other good options would be tilapia, halibut, or mahi mahi. If you’re not in the mood for fish, shrimp would work great for this recipe too!
Ingredients for Fish Tacos
There are three different components to this recipe – the fish with the ingredients for the breading, the toppings for the tacos, and the items needed to make the fish taco sauce. Here is what you will need…
- Buttermilk: helps marinate the fish and helps the breading stick to the fish pieces
- Cod: the fish should be cut into strips that are 1″ by 3″, see section below for choosing good fish
- Flour: main component for the breading on the fish
- Seasonings: smoked paprika, chili powder, salt and pepper
- Peanut Oil: has a neutral flavor, is very affordable and has a high smoke point so that fish cooks quickly
- TIP: Use corn oil, canola oil or vegetable oil as a substitute if needed.
- Butter: combines with the oil to pan fry the fish pieces
- Corn Tortillas: Vista Hermosa brand is our favorite for corn tortillas
Toppings:
- Green and Purple Cabbage: adds freshness
- Limes: adds acidity
- Cilantro: adds flavor and freshness
- Jalapeno Slices: adds heat
- Avocado: adds creaminess and flavor
For the Sauce
- Seasonings: garlic powder and smoked paprika
- Cilantro: adds flavor and color
- Mayonnaise: adds creaminess
- Sour Cream: adds creaminess
- Lime Juice: adds acidity, fresh limes are always preferred
NOTE: If you want to add some heat to the sauce, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of sriracha sauce.

How to Choose Good Fish for Fish Tacos
When you are picking out fish for fish tacos, you want it to be firm in texture, and even in color with no darkened areas. It should appear moist and almost look translucent. Another tried and true way to check the quality of fish is to smell it. There should be no fishy smell.
What are the Best Tortillas for Fish Tacos?
We are obsessed with Vista Hermosa brand of corn tortillas. They hold up well and don’t crumble like so many corn tortillas do.
How to Make Fish Tacos
Making fish tacos at home is actually quite easy. We are going to start by prepping and frying the fish, then we will assemble the tacos with bright fresh toppings and the most delicious fish taco sauce. Here are the basic steps…
- Pour the buttermilk in a bowl and add the fish.
- Combine all the ingredients for the breading in a shallow dish.
- Get some peanut oil heating in a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. See section below for using an air fryer.
- Take the fish, one piece at a time, from the buttermilk and dredge it lightly in the flour mixture.
- Add the butter to the pan and let it melt, then place the fish pieces in the pan. Let them cook until they are golden and gently flip each piece and cook them for another minute or two.
- TIP: Don’t crowd the fish. You will need to cook the fish in batches.
- Remove the fish to a plate lined with a warmed paper towel and sprinkle them with salt. Repeat all these steps until all the fish is cooked.
- Warm the tortillas in a separate cast iron skillet. Add a piece or two of fish to each tortilla and then add the toppings and sauce.
- For the sauce, whisk all the ingredients together in a small bowl.

Can I Use an Air Fryer for the Fish?
Yes, an air fryer works great for cooking the fish for fish tacos. Heat the air fryer to 350 degrees and drizzle the dredged fish with a little olive oil or non stick spray. Cook for 3-5 minutes. Open the fryer and add a little pat of butter to each top, cook 2-3 minutes more. Remove from the air fryer and serve with the warmed tortillas, toppings and fish taco sauce.

How to Store Fish Tacos
Tacos don’t store well once they have been assembled, so if you know you are going to have leftovers, store everything separately. Everything will keep for up to 2-3 days in separate airtight containers.
Reheat the fish in a skillet on the stove top. Do not reheat the fish in microwave. The microwave just cooks too quickly with too high of heat for fish. The fish will end up rubbery and tough.
These fish tacos are made with lightly breaded pan fried white flaky fish and topped with fresh ingredients and a delightful creamy fish taco sauce. They are easy to make, fresh and dinner is on the table in less than 30 minutes.

Pour buttermilk into a bowl and add the fish. Set aside.
1/2 Cup Buttermilk, 1 Pound Cod

In a shallow dish, combine the flour, smoked paprika, chili powder, and salt and pepper. Set aside.
1/2 Cup Flour, 1/2 teaspoon Smoked Paprika, 1 1/4 teaspoons Chili Powder, Salt and Pepper

Pour 3 tablespoons of the peanut oil into a 12-inch cast iron frying pan and place over medium-high heat until it shimmers or use an air fryer – see note*
1/4 Cup Peanut Oil

Remove the fish pieces from the buttermilk and dredge them lightly through the flour mixture, shaking to remove excess.

Add the butter to the pan and let it melt. Place some fish pieces in the oil, without crowding them, and cook until deep golden brown, about 3 to 4 minutes. Using a fish spatula gently and carefully flip and cook for 1 minute more.
2 Tablespoons Butter

Remove to a warmed, paper-towel-lined plate and sprinkle with salt. Repeat with the remaining fish.

Warm the tortillas in the empty and wiped out cast iron pan and then add a little fish, sauce, and toppings!
Corn Tortillas, 2 Cups Green and Purple Cabbage, Limes, Cilantro, Jalapeno Slices, Avocado
For the Sauce

Whisk all the ingredients together in a small bowl and set aside.
1 teaspoon Garlic Powder, 1/2 teaspoon Smoked Paprika, 1 Tablespoon Cilantro, 1/4 Cup Mayonnaise, 1/2 Cup Sour Cream, 1-2 Tablespoons Lime Juice
Air Fryer Instructions – Heat to 350 and drizzle the dredged fish with a little olive oil or non stick spray. Cook for 3-5 minutes. Open the fryer and add a little pat of butter to each top, cook 2-3 minutes more. Remove and serve.

CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Cleveland Middle School investigating after teacher seen manhandling student

An investigation in underway after a teacher was recorded grabbing and pulling on a young male student at Cleveland Middle School.
The incident reportedly took place on March 1.
The teacher captured in the video is seen yanking the student towards him by the back of his shirt. After attempting to push the child to the ground, the teacher is seen grabbing the child’s leg and forcing him to the floor. Then, the boy is lifted off the ground by his shirt before the video cuts.
Cleveland Independent School District said they are aware of the incident, and the staff member has been removed from the campus and is no longer working with CISD.
The district has not released a statement but said appropriate action will be taken once the investigation concludes.

Clint Eastwood Shares Heartbroken Reaction to Toby Keith’s Death

Clint Eastwood is one of the many fans, friends and colleagues who turned to social media to remember Toby Keith after the news of his death broke on Tuesday (Feb. 6).
The 93-year-old actor writes that he’s “extremely saddened” by Keith’s death at the age of 62.
Keith died on Monday (Feb. 5) after a two-year battle with stomach cancer. His family broke the news in a post to social media on Tuesday morning, writing, “Toby Keith passed away peacefully last night on February 5th, surrounded by his family. He fought his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time.”
Eastwood and Keith were longtime friends, and the actor shared his own thoughts on Keith’s death, writing, “Extremely Saddened by the passing of Toby Keith, Rest in peace my friend… “
Eastwood helped inspire a song that would stand as one of Keith’s final career triumphs. Keith wrote “Don’t Let the Old Man In” after a conversation with Eastwood, after Keith asked the filmmaker how he kept his work and personal lives so active at his age.
“I don’t let the old man in,” Eastwood replied.

“Don’t Let the Old Man In” appeared in Eastwood’s 2018 film The Mule, but it was never a radio single. In November of 2023, Keith returned to the stage for what turned out to be the final television performance of his life, delivering a powerful, emotional version of “Don’t Let the Old Man In” at the 2023 People’s Choice Country Awards that had the audience in tears.
The overwhelming reaction convinced Keith to release the song as a single. It went on to top the iTunes charts, and Keith subsequently announced a string of three shows in Las Vegas, which turned out to be the final live shows of his life.

How a Reboot Could Save the MCU

It looks more and more like the Marvel Cinematic Universe is headedd for a reboot. The Multiverse Saga is largely inspired by a comic series called Secret Wars, which followed multiple Marvel comics universes colliding, being destroyed, and then being relaunched as a new, streamlined continuity. It seems like Marvel’s movies and shows could be headed in the same direction. (And after The Marvels and Secret Invasion, maybe the MCU needs a reboot.)
If Marvel does decide to go the reboot route, the future of Marvel could be very different from its present — and could involve the return of fan favorite characters who are no longer involved in the franchise like Iron Man, and introduce the X-Men into the main Marvel continuity. Why ‘Star Wars: Attack of the Clones’ Is Hated, But Great

Sometimes it seems like nobody likes Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones. On our own ScreenCrush ranking of every Star Wars movie, it comes right near the bottom, only ahead of the animated Clone Wars movie. The scene where Anakin talks about sand and how much he hates sand, and why sand is bad is always getting picked on and made fun of.
But Attack of the Clones deserves more love. It has some of the best character moments in any Star Wars movie. It really establishes characters like Anakin Skywalker and Emperor Palpatine, and explains all of their motivations through the rest of the series. For a long time, the obligatory post-credits scene at the end of every Marvel Cinematic Universe movie was one of the most exciting parts of the studio’s films. It all started with Iron Man and the shocking debut of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, and continued right through the first Avengers, which introduced Thanos. They were fantastic hints of what was to come, and they really established the idea that everything at Marvel is connected.
Lately, though, MCU’s post-credits scene feel more than obligatory; they feel a little desperate, and even confused. We’re now several years removed from some Marvel Phase Four scenes that have never been mentioned again in any context. (Remember when Shang-Chi featured appearances from Captain Marvel and Bruce Banner? The Marvels movie and She-Hulk show didn’t!) In our latest Marvel video, we look at recent post-credits scenes, examine whether or not Marvel has followed up on them, and discuss the larger issue here: Whether the MCU is spinning into chaos and has lost track of the careful planning and teasing that made it so effective in its early years. How ‘Ahoksa’ Sets Up Rey’s New ‘Star Wars’ Movie

Obviously the Star Wars: Ahsoka TV series set up the crossover film that is currently in development from Ahsoka creator Dave Filoni that will supposedly unite the heroes of all the Star Wars Disney+ shows like The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. But the Ahsoka show actually introduced a ton of new concepts to the Star Wars canon, some of them inspired by old Star Wars novels and comics. And some of the concepts are directly connected to another upcoming Star Wars movie: The Rey Skywalker film that will star Daisy Ridley in the role she played in the recent sequel trilogy.

How ‘The Marvels’ Makes ‘Secret Invasion’ Even Worse

Whatever else you think about The Marvels, good, bad, or ugly, it has a problem: It actively makes the previous Marvel Cinematic Universe TV show, Secret Invasion, even worse. It undermines all of that show’s storylines. It openly contradicts a lot of its plot points and cliffhangers. And it makes it impossible to reconcile the Nick Fury of that show with the guy in this new movie. While the best Marvel films and series reward careful attention, watching Secret Invasion and The Marvels together only makes them worse.
And that’s the subject of our latest Marvel video. In it, we look back at Secret Invasion now that we have watched The Marvels, and we look at all the ways the new film actually makes that TV show worse. We’ll break down the character beats that don’t line up, we’ll explore how the depictions of the Skrulls are totally different on the two shows, and question why no one ever mentions how the U.S. Government has declared war on alien races on Earth. Saltburn Director Emerald Fennell Doesn’t Know Anyone Nice

Emerald Fennell knows a beautiful thing when she sees it. For Vanity Fair‘s “Notes on a Scene” series, the Saltburn director did a deep dive on constructing the pivotal scene where Oliver (Barry Keoghan) first arrives at the lavish British estate Saltburn and is taken on a tour of the grounds by Felix (Jacob Elordi) before they spend a fateful summer together.
Fennell kicks off the video by singing the praises of Keogahn, who stars in Saltburn as Oliver Quick, an outcast Oxford student who somehow falls into the good graces of Elordi’s incredibly popular, charming, and über-wealthy Felix. “I saw Barry in Killing of a Sacred Deer and I thought it was the best performance I’ve ever seen,” says Fennell. “Just full stop. I think that the best performance any actor’s ever given. He seemed to get the thing that I really love in all movies and really wanted in this. He’s both a real person and a feeling too. He knows how how to be super grounded and real, but how to be other worldly.”
Oliver’s arrival to Saltburn kicks off what Fennell describes as the most “gothic moment of the film.” The transition from Oxford’s campus to Saltburn represents a turning point, she says. “We go from Secret History, Brideshead Revisit, to ‘Oh, we may be in a hammer house of horror movie” Fennell says. At this house of horror, Oliver greeted coolly by butler Duncan, played by Paul Reese. “He is Saltburn,” says Fennell. “He could have lived for 1000 years. He’s one of the bricks.”
Shockingly, the actual estate of Saltburn has never appeared in any piece of media before. “There are no photographs of it,” she says. Fennell knew that Saltburn had to be the location for the film when she took a tour of the property and noticed something quirky about the house. “They had hats on the busts. These kind of priceless beautiful marble statues, and they had these silly hats on them,” says Fennell, circling one in the background of a shot. “That’s exactly what this movie is, the kind of surreal and the kind of mundane kind of beautiful and the silly all, like, together in one.”
Fennell is quick to point out that Saltburn, set in the summer of 2006, is technically a period piece, which she wanted reflected in the costuming. She then points to Felix’s Livestrong bracelet, which she cheekily calls a “crucial period detail.” To capture 2006, she made sure that Felix was groomed appropriately. “Long hair, sideburns. That was 2006,” she says.
“So many times the costume designer would be like, ‘We found this super lame dress,’” quips Fennell. “I’m like, ‘It’s in my cupboard. I wear it all the time. I’m gonna burn it when I get home.’”
Fennell was immediately taken by the Euphoria star’s audition, specifically the way he played against type as a member of British aristocracy. “This is why Jacob Elordi is such an absolute genius. And why the moment he came in and auditioned I wanted him to play the part,” she says. “When people auditioned they came in and gave a sort of Brideshead type performance—it was quite lush and sort of arch. And Jacob came in and was just kind of this normal guy.” Fennell goes on to elucidate how difficult it is to play “nice guy” type characters. “When it comes to character in general I don’t think any of us are nice,” she says. “I just don’t know anyone nice… not really. Not anyone I know well. I don’t think I’m nice.”
As for the tour of Saltburn: Fennell wanted the audience be wowed by the house, but also to be focused on Felix. “This is Felix’s tour,” she says. “This is one of the reasons we chose this house. This house is so beautiful, so exceptional. It was also important to me framing-wise that even though it’s a tour of the house, even though we’re all dying to see it, even though it’s the most beautiful house in the world, we’re not looking at it.”

Watch ‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes’ Cast Quiz Each Other

In The Hunger Games universe, tributes must face an arena’s worth of trials and terror in a battle to the death. The stars of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, a prequel set about 60 years before Suzanne Collins’s original trilogy, were put to their own—admittedly far lower stakes—test by Vanity Fair.
Tom Blyth, who plays a younger version of President Snow in the film, quizzed costars Rachel Zegler and Josh Andrés Rivera, who competed to determine who knows Blyth best. The game starts off on an ironic note when Blyth reveals that his biggest childhood fear is actually in the film’s title. “I was afraid of snakes as a kid because I saw Indiana Jones a lot…and because he was afraid of snakes I think that fear transferred onto me,” he explains.
This phobia didn’t rear its ugly head on set, though, even when two live reptiles were brought in. “Tom, you never let on that you were afraid,” says Zegler, who plays the titular songbird Lucy Gray Baird. “I’m not anymore—I’ve done a lot of therapy with snakes,” Blyth jokingly replies.
Playing fast and loose with their point allotments, Zegler and Rivera (who are a real-life couple) venture their best guess at the Justin Timberlake track Blyth considers his go-to karaoke song and bond over vino-filled dinner parties with their director, Francis Lawrence. “Francis turned Josh into a fake wino,” Blyth quips.
As for the filmmaker: In a separate video Lawrence breaks down scenes from the four Hunger Games films he’s directed, including Snow’s would-be execution in Mockingjay—Part 2. He also explains why “we never actually pointed any real arrows at anybody, ever,” starting with his first film in the franchise, Catching Fire.
By quiz show’s end, Zegler and Rivera flip the script on Blyth to test how well he knows them both, asking about a surprising elementary school stage debut, the unexpected people Zegler called from last year’s Oscars, and who among them owned a physical copy of the Shrek original motion picture soundtrack.
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes hits theaters on November 17.

‘What If’ Season 2: Full Trailer Breakdown
