    Zoe Saldana Wouldn’t Be Upset If She Never Wore Gamora’s Makeup Again

    Even before James Gunn took a job as the co-CEO of DC Studios, he was saying that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would be his last movie with that particular set of characters. That doesn’t mean the end of the Guardians team — someone else could always make a Guardians Vol. 4 — but it does put that possibility out into the universe. Dave Bautista has already said Guardians Vol. 3 will be his last time as Drax as well. So even if the Guardians show up somewhere else, it could be in a drastically different form.

    Some of the Guardians have already died; Gamora was killed during Avengers: Infinity War, although a variant of her from a past timeline wound up appearing in Avengers: Endgame, and then stuck around in the MCU to appear in Guardians Vol. 3. Gamora(s) is (are) played by Zoe Saldana, who in a new interview with Variety says that she would be okay with retiring from Marvel soon — or at least retiring from wearing all of Gamora’s elaborate makeup.

    As she put it:

    I can never say no to anything, but that green makeup? I wouldn’t be upset if it didn’t happen again. I miss Gamora but I don’t miss 3:30 a.m. calls and five-hour makeup sessions and trips to the dermatologist afterwards.

    She did concede that the hassles of the makeup are somewhat offset by her meetings with “that 8-year-old or that dad and mom or those generational fans that remind me that what I did was special to them, it makes me not be cynical about Marvel.” Still, you have to wonder how many hours Saldana (or Bautista, for that matter) has spent in a makeup chair between three Guardians and two Avengers. It must be hundreds of hours. That can’t be fun.

    The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special premieres on Disney+ on November 25, 2022. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled to open in theaters on May 5, 2023.

    In more than 80 years of history, many different actors have portrayed Batman, and many have them have made meaningful contributions to the character. But as far as we here at ScreenCrush are concerned, one version stands head and shoulders, cape and cowl above the rest: Kevin Conroy, who voiced the Dark Knight on Batman: The Animated Series and the Batman: Arkham Asylum video game series, along with dozens of other movie, TV series, and video game appearances.

    We’re not just saying this because Kevin Conroy suddenly passed away after a brief battle with cancer. Months ago, before word of Conroy’s illness and death became public, we made the video below, arguing that Kevin Conroy — not Ben Affleck, not Michael Keaton, not Val Kilmer, not George Clooney, not even the amazing Christian Bale — was the definitive portrayal of Batman across all media. No, the one true Batman was, is, and always will be Kevin Conroy.

    The video below explains why. It wasn’t just the grit in Conroy’s distinctive voice, or even his longevity in the role that made him the superior Batman. (Conroy played Batman for more than 30 years, longer than any other person in history.) As he revealed in his own recently released autobiographical comic, “Finding Batman,” Conroy’s own personal life had a huge impact on how he portrayed the role.     Rest in peace, Kevin Conroy. You may be gone, but your Batman will live forever. And it will likely never be surpassed, either.

    Before he made Star Wars, George Lucas directed a hard sci-fi movie titled THX 1138 about a dystopian future where humanity takes drugs to suppress their emotions. (While the movie is fairly obscure, you probably know its title because Lucas named his sound company, THX, after it.) This week’s episode of Andor is full of references to THX 1138, mostly visual ones: The way the characters wear all-white jumpsuits and live in all-white rooms, while they toil away in underground facilities.

    ‘Andor’ Episode 7 Breakdown: Every Easter Egg and Secret

    This week’s Andor is called “Announcements,” and it’s a fitting title. Many of the many characters reveal their true selves this week after spending much of the season behind disguises, or hiding their genuine feelings. There are also literal announcements in this episode, including the Imperial news bulletin about the heist we saw on last week’s episode.

    She-Hulk didn’t just break the fourth wall in its season finale; it smashed it into oblivion. The title character decided she did not care for the creative direction of her final episode and changed it by venturing through the Disney+ main menu, entering a Marvel making-of documentary, and then confronting her own show’s writing staff. Then she met with Marvel’s head honcho, Kevin — only it wasn’t the real Marvel’s Kevin Feige. It was “K.E.V.I.N.,” an elaborate artificial intelligence that determines the ultimate direction of the MCU.

    She-Hulk’s confrontation with her maker could be a throwaway gag, but Marvel tends to hang on to these little aspects of world-building. And, when you think about it, the idea that the MCU may all be an elaborate simulation is not that far-fetched within the framework of a massive multiverse filled with gods, heroes, and She-Hulks. So Marvel could bring K.E.V.I.N. back — and there’s one MCU villain who would love to meet him: Kang the Conqueror.

    This week’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law was practically a super-villain team-up, but not in the way you might expect from a Marvel Cinematic Universe TV show. When Emil Blonsky’s monitoring braclet malfunctions, Jen Walters winds up stuck at his upstate retreat for a whole day, where she winds up sitting in on a group therapy session with a bunch of B-level (okay C-level [okay Z-level]) Marvel baddies including Porcupine, Saracen, and Wrecker. As goofy as they seem, they are all real Marvel baddies from the comics.

    That’s just one of the many Easter eggs, hidden Marvel references, and little details you might have missed in Episode 7 (“The Retreat”) of She-Hulk. We also look at where that Muppets scene came from, we run down all the members of Blonsky’s retreat support group, and why the towing truck that helps Jen with her car comes from Slott Towing.
