  • 10 Movies You Never Knew Had Video Game Tie-Ins

The thing about movies is they end. And what is there to do once you’ve reached the conclusion, the credits roll, and you’re forced to re-enter the real world?

Find the movie’s tie-in video game, of course. Hollywood has been courting the gamer community pretty much since games were invented, and the tie-in video game offers a unique form of corporate and entertainment synergy. Usually these games are based on action or fantasy films with a vast world and plenty of room for kicking, punching, and blowing stuff up. It also helps when there’s already a built-in franchise, as with The Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter or James Bond.

But not always. Occasionally you’ll find a film with a tie-in game that is downright perplexing. What about this movie suggested the need for a video game in the first place? How could a video game possibly be structured around a slapstick comedy, or a hyper-stylized horror movie, or a high school satire?

You wouldn’t necessarily think that the worlds of these types of movies would offer themselves readily for reinterpretation into a video game model, but, by golly, they did it anyway. (“They” being whatever game studio was lucky enough to get the brief and then tear their hair out wondering how the heck they’re going to pull this off.)

Because these games exist, they’re worth examining, if not necessarily playing. In fact, we’d say most if not all of the games on this list are best left untouched, whether because of outdated graphics or a boring storyline or the fact that their mere existence is downright laughable. Fortunately for these games, we love celebrating pop culture ephemera. As long as we don’t spend hours trying to win a boss fight against the Scrooge doll from The Polar Express.

    Big Trouble in Little China

John Carpenter’s goofy action adventure is kind of built like one of those old-fashioned arcade fighting games, so it stands to reason that Big Trouble in Little China once got the Commodore 64 treatment. It’s exactly what you would expect from a side-scrolling beat ‘em up with graphics that border on the minimalist. The player controls one of three characters at a time—Jack Burton, Wang Chi, and Egg Shen—punching and kicking bad guys and collecting weapons as they slowly make their way along the endlessly scrolling facades of, presumably, a pixelated Chinatown.

    Bram Stoker’s Dracula

In contrast, the operatic tragedy of Bram Stoker’s Dracula does not immediately demand to be gamified, and yet they made a video game of it nevertheless. Released in 1992, the officially licensed Dracula games were made for a bunch of different consoles, with slight differences in each version. In all of them you play as young lawyer Jonathan Harker, sneaking through Count Dracula’s castle and pulling jiu jitsu moves on various vermin — bats, rats, spiders, flame-throwing scorpions, occasionally Dracula himself — while avoiding Indiana Jones-style booby traps and plotting the vampire’s demise. If Jonathan Harker had had these sick martial arts skills to start with, Dracula would have been a very short movie.

    Braveheart

There’s really only one way you could make a Braveheart video game, and the 1999 battle strategy game they eventually made sure tried its best. It’s an interesting mix of styles: In Planning mode you have a bird’s-eye view of the map, moving troops around and surveying battlegrounds, while in Realtime 3D mode you’re on the ground exploring settlements or fighting alongside your soldiers. The game was mostly criticized for being too convoluted, and that makes sense. When you’re watching a movie like Braveheart, you’re not wondering what would have happened if the heroes won.

    From Dusk Till Dawn

What happens after the events of Robert Rodriguez’s vampire action-horror movie From Dusk Till Dawn have reached their bloody conclusion? Well, you’d know the answer to that question if you played the video game. A few months after the conclusion of the movie, Seth Gecko finds himself in a supermax prison floating off the coast of New Orleans that has been infiltrated by vampires pretending to be inmates. The only way to survive is to shoot his way out, which is exactly what the game demands you do. Without the sinister saloon setting to add some flavor, this game is just another third-person shooter with middling graphics.

    Little Nicky

No, we’re serious, there is genuinely a Little Nicky video game. The extremely pixelated side-scroller was made for the Game Boy Color and came out a little over a month after the Adam Sandler comedy debuted (and subsequently bombed). You play as Nicky, a half-demon half-angel who must travel through 24 levels inspired by events from the movie, completing tasks, gathering objects, and occasionally fighting bosses with your flaming belches and demonic possession skills. It looks quite good — the colors are vibrant and the vibe is charmingly retro — it’s just unfortunate that it was based on Little Nicky.

    Mean Girls

You will never play the Mean Girls video game. (You will never play most of these games, probably, but Mean Girls specifically is impossible to find.) The game was made for the Nintendo DS and was scheduled to be released in Europe in 2009 and in America in 2010, but both releases were canceled at the last minute for unknown reasons. Thanks to a recently debugged version uploaded to YouTube, we now know what the game would have been like — a high school-set adventure game via text-based conversations — but it’s never been officially released. Strangely, star Lindsay Lohan doesn’t even appear on the game’s cover.

    Napoleon Dynamite

We’ll say this much: the Napoleon Dynamite video game has a totally charming aesthetic that looks like something straight out of one of Napoleon’s school notebooks. That’s about all we can say in its favor, though. The game, which was released for PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS three years after the movie opened, is nothing but a collection of minigames set in the film’s stylized small town high school environment. It’s funnier as a concept than it is as an actual game, but, really, what would a “Napoleon Dynamite video game” have even looked like? A Grand Theft Auto knockoff starring Uncle Rico and Tina?? Actually … we’d play that.

    The Polar Express

The Polar Express certainly looks like a video game, so in theory it should work as an actual video game. There was an attempt, released the same year as the film, to turn the tale of a young boy’s acceptance of holiday-flavored childlike wonder into an action-adventure, and it was apparently pretty bad. The game follows most of the main story of the film, but with a few key differences. One of these is the inclusion of the Scrooge puppet from the terrifying abandoned toys scene midway through the movie, except in the game the puppet is sentient(?) and wants to stop the children from reaching the North Pole and meeting Santa(??) by stealing their train tickets(???). Bah humbug, indeed.

    The Room

While unlicensed, The Room Tribute is the closest we’re likely going to get to an official video game tie-in of Tommy Wiseau’s so-bad-it’s-still-really-bad classic. Created by Newgrounds founder Tom Fulp, the game is basically a 16-bit version of the movie from Johnny’s perspective, filling in all the loose ends of the film (such as where Peter disappeared to) and adding in some new material. It also concludes with an epilogue confirming that Johnny was an alien the whole time, and he and his fellow extraterrestrials live in a spaceship shaped like a giant spoon.

    Scarface

The premise of the Scarface game is almost as good as the film itself: what if, instead of dying horribly in a hail of bullets like he does at the film’s climax, Tony Montana survives the shootout and goes on a revenge mission to hunt down all of his would-be assassins? The result, 2006’s Scarface: The World Is Yours, is a mashup of Grand Theft Auto and GoldenEye, a goofy tribute to a classic film that ends up being way more fun than it has any right to be. It also allows the player to go into Blind Rage mode, during which Tony is invincible and his ammo never runs out, so you can shout “I’M RELOADED” as many times as you want.

  • ‘Call of Duty’ Movie in the Works at Paramount

Look alive, gamers: A Call of Duty movie is officially in the works at Paramount.

According to Variety, Paramount has signed a deal with video game publisher Activision, owned by Microsoft, to make a film based on the popular first-person shooter Call of Duty series.

Paramount will develop, produce, and distribute the live-action film based on the highly successful military-themed Call of Duty game series, which first debuted in 2003.

“As a lifelong fan of Call of Duty this is truly a dream come true. From the first Allied campaigns in the original Call of Duty, through Modern Warfare and Black Ops, I’ve spent countless hours playing this franchise that I absolutely love. Being entrusted by Activision and players worldwide to bring this extraordinary storytelling universe to the big screen is both an honor and a responsibility that we don’t take lightly,” Paramount CEO, Skydance founder, and film producer David Ellison said in a statement.

“Throughout its history, Call of Duty has captured our imagination with incredible action and intense stories that have brought millions of people together from around the world, and that focus on making incredible Call of Duty games remains unwavering. With Paramount, we have found a fantastic partner who we will work with to take that visceral, breathtaking action to the big screen in a defining cinematic moment. The film will honor and expand upon what has made this franchise great in the first place, and we cannot wait to get started,” Activision president Rob Kostich added.

Unlike many other popular video game titles (for better or worse), Call of Duty has yet to be adapted for film or television, so it will be interesting to see how Paramount tackles the franchise. It’s likely expectations will be high among fans.

While it’s unclear what the plot or focus of the film will be, sources told Variety that the deal includes the potential for future additional films and even a TV series. The deal between Paramount and Activision was struck following Paramount’s recent $8 billion merger with Skydance Media.

The Call of Duty series comprises over 30 titles across mainline games, spinoffs, remakes, and mobile adaptations. Reports suggest the franchise has accumulated more than $35 billion in revenue since the first game was released over two decades ago.

  • ‘Alan Wake’ Will Be Turned Into Films and TV Series

‘Alan Wake’ Will Be Turned Into Films and TV Series

Alan Wake was already a cinematic game series, but now it is going to be developed as both movies and TV shows.

According to a press release, Annapurna is partnering with game studio Remedy to “develop and produce their award-winning Control and Alan Wake franchises for film, television and other audiovisual formats.” In addition, Annapurna are working “as a co-production and co-financing partner for the upcoming game Control 2.”

READ MORE: Get Ready For a New Tomb Raider TV Series

In Alan Wake, players control the title character, a novelist suffering from writer’s block who must investigate his wife’s disappearance, and then encounters shadowy supernatural beings that can only be hurt after they’re exposed to light. The sequel expanded the mythology of the franchise, and not only continued Alan’s story and added a new protagonist, an FBI Agent named Saga Anderson, solving a strange series of murders that are connected to Alan.

The first game was released in 2010 and became a critical and commercial hit; Remedy released its first full sequel, Alan Wake II in 2023, when it quickly became the company’s fast-selling title.

While video games were long considered poor subject matter for movies and TV shows — and almost exclusively yielded absolutely dreadful live-action adaptation, that has changed in recent years. HBO had one of his biggest hits of the decade with their version of The Last of Us, and Sonic the Hedgehog has become one of Paramount’s biggest film franchises. (Then again, the movie version of Borderlands is one of the biggest flops of 2024, so you never know.)

Still, Alan Wake seems like it does have the makings of a great film or television series, if the material is handled properly. We’ll see how it goes.

  • New Super Mario Bros. Movie Release Date Announced

New Super Mario Bros. Movie Release Date Announced

A new film set in The Super Mario Bros. Movie universe has been announced. Described as “a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.,” it is unclear if it will be a direct sequel or a spin-off of the highly successful 2023 movie starring Chris Pratt and Jack Black. However, we do know it will be released on April 3, 2026, and that Illumination is once again the studio behind the animation. The end credits of the 2023 film teased Yoshi, so that could be the direction it is going.

“We are now creating a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. This film is planned for release in theaters on April 3rd, 2026, in the US and many other markets, and throughout the month of April in other territories,” said Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto on Twitter. “We’ll let you know the details once we’re ready to share more. This time too, the staff at Illumination and Nintendo are working together. We’re thinking about broadening Mario’s world further, and it’ll have a bright and fun story. We hope you’ll look forward to it”

The first film featured the voices of its all-star cast, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

Despite receiving mixed reception from critics, the adaptation still became one of the year’s biggest movie releases. It was one of the top releases of 2023, with a worldwide gross of over $1.3 billion at the box office.

“While working underground to fix a water main, Brooklyn plumbers Mario and brother Luigi are transported down a mysterious pipe and wander into a magical new world,” reads the first film’s synopsis. “But when the brothers are separated, Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi. With the assistance of a Mushroom Kingdom resident Toad and some training from the strong-willed ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, Princess Peach, Mario taps into his own power.”

  • First ‘Sonic 3’ Teaser Confirms Return of Jim Carrey’s Robotnik

First ‘Sonic 3’ Teaser Confirms Return of Jim Carrey’s Robotnik

Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik appeared to die during the climactic battle in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. “No one could have survived that crash!” one character said. “He’s toast! Good riddance!”

Someone should have told that guy he was in a video game movie. And in video games, everyone always has extra lives.

The first teaser for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is here an it includes the distinctive evil laugh of Jim Carrey, confirming he will appear in the third of the surprisingly successful video game adaptations.

You can watch the first teaser below, which also hints at the new character joining the story…

READ MORE: The 15 Strangest Movies Based on TV Shows

The text of the tweet, referring to a “shadow” is a reference to the post-credits scene from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which teased an appearance by yet another character from the Sonic game franchise: Shadow the Hedgehog.

First introduced in 2001’s Sonic Adventure 2, the character is an artificial hedgehog (unlike those real hedgehogs who talk and wear sneakers and run fast, you see) who was created by Robotnik’s grandfather. Shadow proved popular enough to get his own spinoff game, Shadow the Hedgehog, which was released in 2005.

The returning cast for Sonic 3 also includes James Marsden and Tika Sumpter as Tom and Maddie Wachowski, the main non-evil human characters in the previous films. The voices of the core heroes remains the same as well: Ben Schwartz is Sonic, Colleen O’Shaughnessey is Tails, and Idris Elba is still, hilariously, Knuckles. The first two films grossed a combined $700 million in theaters, making them amongst the most successful video game adaptations in history.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is scheduled to open in theaters on December 20, 2024.

  • Gameplay Trailer Gives First Look at New Indiana Jones Game

Gameplay Trailer Gives First Look at New Indiana Jones Game

Indiana Jones has a very strong video game tradition, producing classics like Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. (Then again they weren’t all winners, I remember screaming in pure rage at my television while playing Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.) But the newest Indiana Jones game, from Bethesda and producer Todd Howard (FalloutThe Elder Scrolls) really looks like something special.

Officially titled Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, the game was first teased way back in January of 2021. Three years later, we’ve finally got our first look at the gameplay, which reveals that it follows a young Indy (very much looking like Harrison Ford, although not voiced by him) as he scours the globe for the clues to yet another ancient mystery.

The game will be exclusive to Windows and Xbox Series X/S – so Indy fans are going to be very annoyed if they don’t own one of those, especially after they see what this thing looks like. Check out the trailer below:

READ MORE: Was There Really a ‘Dial of Destiny’?

Here is the game’s synopsis, which confirms when in the Indiana Jones timeline the film is set:

Uncover one of history’s greatest mysteries in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle™, a first-person, single-player adventure set between the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark™ and The Last Crusade™. The year is 1937, sinister forces are scouring the globe for the secret to an ancient power connected to the Great Circle, and only one person can stop them – Indiana Jones™. You’ll become the legendary archaeologist in this cinematic action-adventure game from MachineGames, the award-winning studio behind the recent Wolfenstein series, and executive produced by Hall of Fame game designer Todd Howard.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will be available later this year.

The Greatest Indiana Jones Movie That Was Never Made

A few years before Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was released, Frank Darabont wrote a very similar (but vastly superior) script called Indiana Jones and the City of the Gods. Here are some of its most notable differences from the version that was made.

Terrorbytes Documentary Series Charts the History of Horror Games

The creators of the extensive horror movie documentary movies In Search of Darkness are turning their bloodshot eyes toward horror video games for In Search of Darkness Presents: Terrorbytes; a five-part documentary series on the history of horror gaming.

    Horror Gaming History Uncovered

Horror has grown into one of the most popular genres of video games over the past few decades, from the survival horror of Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil to more commercial horror-flavored fare like CoD Zombies, and importantly the surge in indie horror games that have led the way for the industry over the last 10-15 years.

The documentary series promises to go in deep on a wide variety of horror game history stories, and include insight from those in the know behind the games and those who live for them (I’ll assume they’ve not got around to asking for me yet as they’re very busy).

CreatorVC, the makers of the documentary, are asking for fan feedback on the website, and detailing exactly what its plans are with the series.

The official synopsis is as follows.

”In Search of Darkness Presents: Terrorbytes – The Evolution of Video Game Horror is a deep dive, retrospective documentary series covering the rich history, evolution and emotional core of the horror gaming landscape. Through separate episodes that each put a specific horror gaming topic under the microscope, viewers will be taken on a journey from video game horror’s humble beginnings to its explosion of popularity today — exploring throughout the series such thematic ideas as why we love scary games, how the design sensibilities of horror gaming break away from and upend traditional video game power fantasies, how horror games both draw from and inspire other mediums, and more.

From the formative ideas of 3D Monster Maze (1981) and Haunted House (1982), to the smash hits of Resident Evil (1996) and Silent Hill (1999), to the now thriving indie scene and the off-the-beaten-path obscurities, no stone will be left unturned in chronicling, analyzing and understanding the vivid and varied world of horror gaming.

With a huge scope displaying over 50 years of horror gaming history, Terrorbytes will discuss the psychology, themes, narratives, mechanics, visuals and development of these games with some of the most prominent figures involved in their creation as well as accomplished writers, academics, and horror talent.”

The episode titles and details are as follows

    Enter the Survival Horror

An examination of horror gaming’s most famous sub-genre. Survival Horror birthed classics such as Resident Evil, Alone in the Dark, and Dead Space. A solid place to start a series on horror gaming, that’s for sure.

    Lethal Licences

A look at the use of licenses in horror games. As far back as the ’80s, horror movies were made into video games, and that’s not really stopped. These days, more horror movies and their characters appear in games than ever before, with the likes of Dead by Daylight collecting them in a single place and studios like Gun Media giving loving care to the likes of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in game form.

    Full Motion Frights

FMV horror is a curious thing. It was certainly unique back in the ’90s, but it had a poor hit rate. A resurgence in the format has given this strange sub-genre new life.

    The Indie Revolution

Indie horror is the lifeblood of the horror gaming scene. It blew up with the emergence of YouTube Let’s Plays, and has taken horror to new heights with games such as Amnesia: The Dark Descent, FAITH, Murder House, and Five Nights at Freddy’s paving the way over the years.

    Cursed and Controversial

Documents the history of horror gaming’s most cursed and controversial moments, including Rockstar’s Manhunt, and Capcom’s Rule of Rose.

  • Microsoft Investing in AI Game Development Tools

Microsoft Investing in AI Game Development Tools

Microsoft is partnering with Inward AI to create AI game development tools. The use of artificial intelligence in the entertainment industry is controversial. However, Microsoft presents it as simply a new tool for game developers.

    Microsoft Partners with Inward AI

According to Microsoft, the company partnered with Inward AI to create an AI toolset for dialogue, story, and quest design.

“We want to help make it easier for developers to realize their visions, try new things, push the boundaries of gaming today, and experiment to improve gameplay, player connection, and more,” says Haiyan Zhang, Xbox’s General Manager of Gaming AI.

The toolset comprises a “Design Copilot” and an AI Character Runtime Engine. The first will help game developers to “explore more creative ideas” by generating scripts, quests, dialogue trees, and more. Meanwhile, developers can integrate the Character Runtime Engine into the game client to generate new in-game content automatically.

Inward AI uses Open AI’s GPT-3 to bring NPCs to life with machine-generated dialogue, creating fleshed-out characters in minutes. The system can also tailor NPC behavior to respond to player actions and other in-game events based on a pre-defined personality.

“The emergence of large language models and generative AI has unlocked new opportunities for storytelling and character engagement within games,” says CEO Ilya Gelfenbeyn.

In their official statements, Microsoft and Inward AI emphasized the long history of algorithm-generated content. However, as the systems become more complex, they are becoming more controversial. AI-generated content was a significant point of contention during the SAG-AFTRA strike. Many worry that the growing use of AI will lead to a loss of acting, writing, articles, and other creative jobs. Others fear that overreliance on AI will lead to increased homogenization of mass media.

‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ Makes Streaming Premiere

For a short period there during the pandemic, big films were getting released on streaming the same day they premiered in theaters. Warner Bros. did that for all of their 202 releases via their HBO Max service; Universal did it a few times with their Peacock streaming site on titles like Halloween Kills. But that model was perhaps not the most financially sustainable, especially for major films with large budgets. And so studios have generally readjusted to something closer to the way they operated before the pandemic; a theatrical run (often shorter than previously) followed by various home video outlets.

But Five Nights at Freddy’s, the new film based on the hit video game franchise, is going back to that earlier route. It’s now playing in theaters around the country, but it is also available for streaming right now on Peacock. As I sit and type these words, I have it playing on the television in front of me; I’m watching Josh Hutcherson fight to keep custody of his younger sister and reluctantly accept a job as a security guard at an abandoned Chuck E. Cheese-style restaurant, where the animatronics come to life and try to kill anyone hanging around (namely him).

Five Nights at Freddy’s is based on the game series created by Scott Cawthon. Between the main series and the spinoffs, there are well over a dozen titles in the franchise already. Of course, movies based on video games have about as good a reputation as pizza from a chain of arcades designed to fleece children of their quarters, so we’ll see whether the film attains the same level of success.

Here is the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie’s official synopsis:

Can you survive five nights? The terrifying horror game phenomenon becomes a blood-chilling cinematic event, as Blumhouse— the producer of M3GAN, The Black Phone and The Invisible Man— brings Five Nights at Freddy’s to the big screen. The film follows a troubled security guard as he begins working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. While spending his first night on the job, he realizes the night shift at Freddy’s won’t be so easy to make it through.

You can watch Five Nights at Freddy’s on Peacock now. (If typing the address is too taxing for you, here is a direct link to the film there.) That title is going to be a problem if they want to make a sequel. A Sixth Night at Freddy’sAnother Five Nights at Freddy’s?

  • Starfield’s Launch Set Record for Game Pass

Starfield’s Launch Set Record for Game Pass

Starfield has been a big success for Bethesda and Microsoft. Not only was it the best-selling game in the US for September, but it’s also been a significant boon for Game Pass. According to Microsoft, the day of Starfield’s launch set a record for the highest number of new Game Pass subscribers.

Starfield’s launch set a record for new Game Pass subscribers

Microsoft recently held its 2024 first-quarter earnings call. The hour-long conference covered a lot of ground, including the recent completion of Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard buyout. However, it also touched on the success of Bethesda sci-fi RPG. This includes its launch day setting a red for Game Pass subscribers and Starfield crossing a massive sales milestone.

“We released Starfield this quarter to broad acclaim,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. More than 11 million people have played the game to date. Nearly half of hours played have been on PC, and on launch day, we set a record for the most Game Pass subscriptions added on a single day ever.”

The executive also reported that Game Pass saw more hours played than ever before. However, he did not specify precisely how many. He added that Minecraft surpassed 300 million units. Nadella also mentioned Microsoft’s strong holiday lineup featuring Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III and Forza Motorsport.

Yesterday also saw Microsoft publish its 2024 Q1 earnings report. The company overall saw a 27% increase in net income. Gaming revenue grew by 9%, with Xbox content and services rising by 13%. However, Xbox consoles also experienced a dip in revenue, falling by 8%. Still, the beginning of 2024’s fiscal year has been good overall for Microsoft and its gaming division.

  • ‘Borderlands’ Reshoots Director Says It Was ‘An Interesting Experience’

‘Borderlands’ Reshoots Director Says It Was ‘An Interesting Experience’

It’s already been more than two full years since the first official images of the Borderlands movie were revealed online. And, at the very earliest, we’re still at least one year away from the film’s release, a very long schedule for this sort of movie. At the time of those first images, Borderlands, based on the huge video game franchise, was directed by Eli Roth, from a script by Craig Mazin.

But last summer, Mazin took his name off the film. (His work is now credited to “Joe Crombie,” a pseudonym.) And when reshoots took place last year, Roth was not present either, supposedly because he was busy shooting his upcoming horror movie Thanksgiving (which is already coming to theaters in a month while Borderlands is still being tinkered with, but that’s another story). The reshoots were instead supervised by Deadpool director Tim Miller. (Roth is still the credited director of the film.)

When writers take their names off movies and directors are replaced for reshoots, these are not generally considered promising signs. But Miller had positive things to say about the shoot, which he called an “interesting experience.” In a recent interview, he told Collider…

I’m just here to help wherever I can. But my main reason, other than, you know, I have a huge affection for the video game industry, I want to see every video game adaption succeed is, I’ll be honest, I wanted to work with Cate Blanchett, and I wanted to work with Kevin [Hart] and Jamie Lee Curtis. And Ariana Greenblatt, the young lady who plays Tiny Tina, is amazing, which everybody knows from the Barbie movie. So it was a great experience all around. I was feeling a little rusty, so I was happy to get back in the saddle. The movie gets up and moves. It’s a good ride.

Let’s hope so. Fans were thrilled about the project when it was first announced, but that was already quite a while (and a different director) ago. Borderlands is scheduled to open in theaters on August 9, 2024. You can watch the full interview with Miller below:

  • Activision Blizzard to ask for 3 days of in-person work

Activision Blizzard to ask for 3 days of in-person work

Activision Blizzard, the developers behind video games like Call of Duty and World of Warcraft, will demand workers return to the office at least part of the time, joining other tech companies in imposing mandates on in-person work.

Employees at Activision Publishing will be expected to return by April 10, while developers at Blizzard Entertainment will return by July 10. Workers at both divisions will be expected to work in-person three days a week.

“We look forward to the increased real-time, in-person collaboration and opportunities this change will foster,” the company told several video game outlets on Tuesday.

Activision Blizzard, like other tech companies, is a forceful adopter of remote work that is now trying to impose a return to office mandate.

Several tech companies, like Apple and Google, announced their own return-to-office plans last year. Last November, Snap said it would ask employees to work in-person at least 80% of the time, starting in February. Other companies, like Disney, Starbucks and Walmart, are also trying to bring workers back to the office for part of the week.

Activision Blizzard did not immediately respond to Fortune’s request for comment.

    Tweet thread

Activision’s announcement came a day after a Twitter user identifying as a Blizzard Entertainment employee shared the return-to-office plans and warned they would cause “an exodus of talent” at the gaming company.

On Monday, Twitter user @LeastMyHairIsOk, who said they worked in Blizzard Entertainment’s customer service department, alleged that Activision Blizzard employees had “no interest in returning to office either full or part time,” due to cost-of-living and health concerns. “This isn’t to say that nobody sees the value in an office environment, but we’ve overall decided the risks do not [outweigh] those benefits.”

“Leadership isn’t prepared for what is likely to happen—an exodus of talent as we find work elsewhere,” they tweeted.

Fortune has attempted to contact @LeastMyHairIsOk for comment.

Activision Blizzard is currently trying to convince regulators to allow Microsoft to acquire the game publisher for $69 billion. Regulators are concerned that the deal would be anti-competitive, as Microsoft may deny popular games like Call of Duty to competitors like Sony’s PlayStation.

The game developer reported $2.3 billion in net revenue in the most recent quarter, a 7% increase year-on-year. The company declined to give a forecast, due to the pending acquisition by Microsoft.

Yet the video game industry is preparing for a slump in demand. Gaming sales boomed as consumers stayed at home during the pandemic, but a return to office work and concerns about inflation are headwinds for video game publishers.

Work-from-home in the video game industry

Employees in the video game industry, who often work long hours with poor job security, embraced work-from-home during the pandemic. Around half of video game workers believed that companies would keep work-from-home options into the future, according to a 2021 survey from the Independent Games Developers Association.

Yet companies also blamed the rapid shift to remote work for disrupting game development, as employees struggled to get access to systems and resources from their homes, forcing game delays throughout the pandemic.

Research from Harvard Business Review in 2021 found that public game companies that shifted to remote work reported 4.4 times more delays than before the pandemic, while companies that did not shift to remote work reported fewer delays than before COVID-19.

  • ‘Fallout‘ TV Show Offers First Look at Long-Awaited Series

‘Fallout‘ TV Show Offers First Look at Long-Awaited Series

The Fallout game series turns 25 years old this month. So what better way to celebrate (other than, okay yes, playing some Fallout video games) than with the first official image from the long-awaited Fallout TV show?

The image was shared by the official Twitter account of Prime Video, the streaming service where the show will eventually debut. The series is being developed by Westworld’s Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, and stars Walton Goggins, Ella Purnell, and Kyle McLachlan. This first image doesn’t show much, but it does at least look like Fallout.

The Fallout television show, which is being produced by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner, was first announced by Amazon back in the summer of 2020. At the time, Joy and Nolan said of the show:

Fallout is one of the greatest game series of all time. Each chapter of this insanely imaginative story has cost us countless hours we could have spent with family and friends. So we’re incredibly excited to partner with Todd Howard and the rest of the brilliant lunatics at Bethesda to bring this massive, subversive, and darkly funny universe to life with Amazon Studios.

At the same time, they released this early teaser for the project.

Although the Fallout TV series plot has yet to be fully revealed, it is assumed the show will be faithful to the concept of the games, which are set in a dark future decades after the world has been destroyed by a nuclear war. The game series, from Bethesda Game Studios, has produced four main titles to date (with a fifth in development) along with numerous spinoffs, most recently 2018’s Fallout 76.

The Fallout series on Prime Video doesn’t have an official release date yet.
