A man has been sentenced to eight years in prison after shooting a D.C.-area minor he was in a relationship with.

Deangelo Wooten, 27, sent text messages to the teenage girl, who is 10 years younger than he is, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.

Police said that Wooten made multiple threats before the shooting. On Jan. 20, 2024, he texted the girl “imma shoot you dead in your face,” police said.

The victim, who was 16 years old at the time, told police that she originally thought he was just trying to get a reaction from her.

The girl met up with Wooten in Southeast D.C. to exchange a pair of shoes. During the meetup at 13th Street and Congress Street SE, Wooten pulled out a gun and started shooting, according to the news release.

The victim was shot in the arm and the bullet “grazed her back,” according to the release. She was treated at a hospital.

Wooten, of no fixed address, plead guilty on July 19 and was sentenced last week.

Four people were shot Wednesday in Southeast D.C. and police are searching for a blue Dodge Charger with heavy tints they believe is linked to the shooting.

Two men are dead and a 2-year-old girl was injured after a shooting in Southeast D.C. and police are searching for a blue Dodge Charger with heavy tints they believe is linked to the brazen crime.

Officers heard shots ring out at 11:22 a.m. in the area of 22nd and Savannah streets in Southeast, not far from Suitland Parkway. D.C. police Chief Pamela Smith said multiple suspects who appeared to be armed with rifles exited a vehicle at the intersection and started shooting, hitting three men who were in the area and killing two of them.

As the shooting was happening, a group that included the 2-year-old girl was exiting a day care for a morning walk when she was struck by gunfire. The girl was taken to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, according to Smith.

    No other children were injured.

“This is another example of gun violence that we cannot have in our communities. We are sick and tired of this,” Smith said. “We want to say to our community, we are working hard every single day to ensure that this kind of violence is decreased in our community. My condolences again to the families who were impacted by this senseless act of violence.”

Authorities said they were initially looking for three suspects wearing black clothing who fled the scene in a white Chevy sedan. That vehicle has since been found abandoned, police said.

“Responsible gun owners know where their guns are at all times,” said John Busch, TSA’s Federal Security Director for the airport.

“Telling us that you forgot that you were carrying a loaded gun is no excuse,” Busch said, adding that it is “unacceptable to bring a gun to an airport checkpoint.”

The TSA said the man faces a federal financial civil penalty, and those can reach a maximum of $15,000.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police seized the weapon and issued the man a citation, the TSA said.

This is the latest incident involving a loaded weapon being found at D.C.-area airports.

Nineteen firearms have been caught at Reagan National Airport TSA checkpoints so far this year. In 2023, the total number was 39.

The TSA said its website has details on how to properly travel with firearms.

Editor’s note: WTOP has reached out to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority for more details.

  • Man shot through front door of Fairfax Co. day care, hitting two employees, police say – WTOP News

Man shot through front door of Fairfax Co. day care, hitting two employees, police say – WTOP News

    [ad_1]

Two women were hospitalized Wednesday afternoon after a shooting at a day care center in Springfield, Virginia, according to Fairfax County police.

An Arlington man fired a pistol through the front door of a day care center in Springfield, Virginia, striking two employees and sending them to the hospital, according to Fairfax County police.

The suspect, 41-year-old Julio Pascual Sejas, of Arlington County, who police said fled the scene and was on the run for several hours, was arrested later Wednesday evening.

The shooting happened around 2 p.m. on Bauer Drive near Burling Wood Drive, at the West Springfield KinderCare. More than 70 children were inside when the shots were fired, according to police.

Fairfax County Police Deputy Chief Brooke Wright said Sejas approached the front door of the day care in an attempt to speak with a woman who works there and with whom he had a romantic relationship. She didn’t let him in, police said, and he pulled out a gun and shot through the front door, striking her and another woman who worked there, Wright said.

No children were injured and, after the shooting, they were moved to another facility and reunited with their parents.

“It doesn’t appear that any of the kids have any indication that anything even happened here today. They were jovial,” Wright said.

“We’re relieved that no children were harmed today, and we want parents to know that we’re going to be protecting children as best we can. We need everybody to do their part,” she added.

The two women who were shot have “non-life threatening injuries,” according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

The former superintendent of public schools in Montgomery County, Maryland, is receiving $1.3 million as part of her separation agreement with the school board.

Monifa McKnight also agreed not to sue the school board over anything that occurred before she signed the deal.

Last month, McKnight said she was stepping down from her post after she “mutually agreed to separate” with the school board.

She had been facing calls to resign amid questions over how the district handled sexual harassment and bullying allegations against a former principal who had recently been promoted.

McKnight was about two years into a four-year contract when she stepped down.

Next month, there will be a series of three forums where Montgomery County, Maryland, parents and residents can discuss what they want to see from the next school superintendent.
