  • Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari Review: A feel-good comedy | Filmfare.com

Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari is a rom-com sprinkled with emotional beats, something of a cross between My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997) and I Want You Back (2022). What stands out is that no one plays the villain here. All four central characters are simply muddled in matters of the heart, and it takes a string of misadventures to set them straight.

Sunny Sanskari (Varun Dhawan), the only son of a jeweller, is hopelessly in love with Ananya (Sanya Malhotra). But to her, theirs is merely a ‘situationship’, leaving him heartbroken. His misery deepens when he discovers she is engaged to Vikram (Rohit Saraf), a billionaire. Determined to win her back, Sunny vows to sabotage the wedding. Soon, he learns that Vikram too has a past. He has ditched his long-term girlfriend, Tulsi Kumari (Janhvi Kapoor), a schoolteacher, in order to get married to Ananya. Spotting common ground, Sunny proposes a pact with Tulsi: they will crash the wedding together and reclaim their exes. With Sunny’s best friend Bantu (Abhinav Sharma) in tow, they masquerade as a couple and land up at the lavish Rajasthan venue where Ananya and Vikram’s nuptials are set to unfold.

But their plans don’t quite play out as expected. In trying to wreck the wedding, Sunny finds himself warming to Vikram, and the two strike an unlikely friendship. Meanwhile, Tulsi and Ananya avoid the predictable trope of women at war; instead, they recognise that they are merely two women caught in circumstances beyond their control.

The narrative ambles through varying definitions of love, allowing the leads to gradually make sense of it all. Along the way, it slyly touches upon the unspoken truths of arranged marriage and the pressure of ‘adjustment’ still expected of women. Women’s empowerment isn’t the core theme, yet the film nudges in that direction.

The writing hits its stride in the comic set-pieces. There’s a hilarious mirror duel where Janhvi and Sanya attempt to appear slimmer by holding in their breath, and a riotous bhaang-fuelled sequence in which all four characters crawl across a lawn, spilling secrets. Sunny’s penchant for atrocious poetry, and Maniesh Paul as the eccentric wedding planner, add further levity. Even the jealousy games between the two pseudo-couples manage to charm. Yet, the comedy doesn’t undercut the emotional heft. A moving moment where Janhvi breaks down and Varun consoles her lingers long after. Similarly, the confrontation between Sanya and Varun is as raw as it is well-acted.

The film, however, stumbles on pacing. The editing is loose, with a couple of abrupt scenes that jar, and lip-sync issues in certain songs are distracting. The soundtrack is overstuffed too, with numbers that serve their purpose onscreen but lack recall value afterwards. The standout is the recreated Sonu Nigam classic Bijuria (1998), spruced up by Tanishk Bagchi and given a dazzling choreography. Another shortfall is the absence of seasoned supporting actors. Veterans like Pankaj Tripathi, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra or Sheeba Chaddha could have brought gravitas; instead, the parental roles are essayed by largely unknown faces.

Director Shashank Khaitan has made sure everyone gets their moment in the sun. Rohit Saraf gets plenty to do. His scene with Sanya towards the end shows both his vulnerability and strength. His bromance with Varun is another highlight of the film. Janhvi Kapoor gets to showcase her dance skills and her comic timing. Be it with Varun or with Sanya, it’s down pat. And she’s good in emotional scenes as well. Overall, a well-rounded performance from the actor. Sanya Malhotra is expressive as hell and uses her eyes and face effectively to convey her inner conflict. It’s the little things which count and Sanya makes sure that less is effectively more. Varun Dhawan is in his element here. He’s in fine form giving his own take on Govinda and Shah Rukh Khan, his chemistry with the two leading ladies is on point and he knows how to walk the thin line between comedy and drama.

The final product feels equal parts Karan Johar (who pops in with a delightful cameo) and Sooraj Barjatya. It’s designed for the family audience rather than the youth alone, and it offers a bit of everything, comedy, drama, songs, emotion, and a message tucked in lightly.

All in all, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari is a good-hearted rom-com that never turns cynical, delivering mischief, warmth and relationship chaos in equal measure.

  • Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari Review: Varun-Janhvi, Rohit-Sanya charm in this ‘filmi’ rom-com

Name: Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari

    Director: Shashank Khaitan

Cast: Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor, Sanya Malhotra and Rohit Saraf

    Writer: Shashank Khaitan

    Rating: 3/5

    Plot
Varun Dhawan (Sunny), Janhvi Kapoor (Tulsi), Sanya Malhotra (Ananya), and Rohit Saraf (Vikram) are people with distinctive personalities but have one thing in common: love. A couple goes to extreme lengths to rekindle their old flames, leading to chaos and some unexpected romance. What happens amidst all this, and which pair gets their happy ending, forms the crux of Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, spearheaded by Shashank Khaitan, produced by Dharma Productions and Mentor Disciple Entertainment.

    What Works
I am a sucker for romance, and Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari satiated my romantic soul! There isn’t a single dull moment; the film keeps you engaged and tickles your funny bone with every dialogue. The color palette of the film is vibrant, which is refreshing to the human eye. Shashank’s attention to detail deserves a special mention; every single shot has been well thought out and is in sync with the story. The film’s soul lies in its witty punches penned by Shashank and Ishita Moitra, which translate effortlessly on screen through the cast.

    What Doesn’t
A particular scene between the leading ladies, Janhvi Kapoor and Sanya Malhotra, visually depicting their insecurities, did not quite entice me. However, this is subjective. Post the interval, the film feels slightly dragged, and the background score isn’t something you would take back home. Except for Panwadi and Tumse Behtar, the songs struggle to leave a lasting impression.

A still from the film Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari:

    Performances
Comedy is serious business, and Varun Dhawan is a master of it. Janhvi Kapoor is surprisingly good with her comic timing. Varun and Janhvi’s off-screen banter translates beautifully into their on-screen chemistry; they complement each other well.

Sanya Malhotra, as always, is a natural. Her dance moves and emotional scenes pierce your heart. And Rohit Saraf, you beauty! You were born for the big screen. He owns every frame, from dance to dialogue delivery, comic timing to the art of emoting with his eyes, he is outstanding and possesses all the qualities of a big-screen hero.

Maniesh Paul as Kuku is hilarious, while Abhinav Sharma plays Bantu effervescently. Akshay Oberoi, Rohitashv Gour, and Dharna Durga shine in their limited screen time.

    Final Verdict
If you enjoy romantic comedies and are craving a hearty laugh, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari checks all the boxes. It’ll make you believe in the most illogical, impractical things, but that’s what cinema is all about, right? It transports you to a world where everything seems believable, and suddenly, life is good.

If you’re wondering whether it’s a vanilla rom-com or if it offers some exciting flavors, Shashank Khaitan’s directorial answers that on October 2, 2025.

  • “Producers also need to behave as family members” – Varun Dhawan on entourage expenses | Filmfare.com

On Monday, the highly anticipated trailer for Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari was released by the makers. During the launch, Varun Dhawan shared his thoughts on the ongoing discussion regarding the increasing entourage costs of actors, saying that the responsibility should not only be placed on them and that producers should also act like family.

Varun shared that when he is involved in a film produced by Dharma Productions, he feels as though it is his own, as Dharma is known for its exceptional care of its actors. He also mentioned that he has a team of four people in his entourage and, after a rule made by his father, filmmaker David Dhawan, he never includes his managers on set, prioritizing the producers’ needs. He said, “This is quite clear in the current landscape, with OTT and satellite prices fluctuating. Producers are the ones with the biggest risk. It is like going back to how people used to make films. Hopefully, people won’t have to go to the extremes seen in the past; those times had their own horror stories as well. In my childhood, I saw friends lose houses. People need to make the film together.”

Varun added, “If I start to consider all production houses as my own, then all producers also need to behave as family members. That doesn’t happen. We can keep blaming actors. Stories and blind items come out, we get trolled. All the muck is thrown on the actors. We need good producers as well. They should foster a collaborative, family-like atmosphere on set. If an actor still wants to be arrogant, don’t work with them.”

Recently, filmmaker Sanjay Gupta shared that certain Bollywood actors request six vanity vans on set to accommodate their various requirements, while some couples in the industry have been known to ask for up to eleven, including a separate van for their kitchens. Previously, Rakesh Roshan and Farah Khan also discussed how the increasing costs associated with entourages impact producers and contribute to the inflation of film budgets.

  • Student of the Year turns 12: When Shah Rukh Khan’s absence made Karan Johar feel ’empty’ while shooting Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, and Sidharth Malhotra’s film

Student of the Year turns 12: When Shah Rukh Khan’s absence made Karan Johar feel ’empty’ while shooting Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, and Sidharth Malhotra’s film

The 2012 film Student of the Year has completed 12 years since its release today, October 19, 2024. Starring debutants Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, and Sidharth Malhotra in the lead roles, it was Karan Johar’s first directorial without Shah Rukh Khan. In this piece, let’s throwback to the moment when the filmmaker revealed that SRK’s absence made him feel ‘empty’ during the shoot of the film.

In an old interview with Zoom during the promotions of Student of the Year, Karan Johar was asked how he felt about the movie being his first one without Shah Rukh Khan in it. In response, Karan said that SRK was playing the ‘integral’ part of a producer on the film. The director further revealed that initially he was comparing his new actors Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, and Sidharth Malhotra to King Khan.

Karan stated, “Definitely in the beginning there was an empty feeling, and I found myself checking myself before I would say, ‘Oh Shah Rukh would do this, oh Shah Rukh would do it like this,’ till I realized how ridiculous that comparison is because it’s their first time film, and to load them with the pressure of not just anyone but possibly one of the best actors in the business is ridiculous.”

However, Karan mentioned that the feeling went away after the first week of shooting and he got ‘absorbed’ into the lives of the debutants on set. He added that halfway through he began to believe that they were his SRK and Kajol.

Earlier today, Karan Johar made a special post on the 12th anniversary of Student of the Year. He wrote, “Let’s start with…there’s something about ‘today’, something very special!!! 12 years and I look back at the film I embarked on, solely to have the best time of my life. And best time, it was!”

Student of the Year is a romantic comedy depicting the lives of students, their friendships, love, and competition. Directed by Karan Johar, it is produced by Dharma Productions and Red Chillies Entertainment. Kajol made a special appearance in the peppy track The Disco Song.

Abhishek Bachchan and Varun Dhawan indulge in fun banter wanting to exchange their respective dads

Abhishek Bachchan’s association with the Indian film industry started when he made his debut with JP Dutta’s war drama Refugee, back in the year 2000. But his breakthrough came with the commercially successful film Dhoom and Mani Ratnam’s political drama Yuva. After starring in the sports drama film Ghoomer with Shabana Azmi, Abhishek Bachchan, Saiyami Kher, and Angad Bedi, he will be seen in Shoojit Sircar’s Be Happy. During an event, Varun Dhawan and Abhishek engaged in a fun banter regarding their fathers, David Dhawan and Amitabh Bachchan. Read on!

Abhishek Bachchan and Varun Dhawan’s fun banter will make you smile

Last year, Abhishek Bachchan was seen in Ghoomer while Varun Dhawan starred in the rom-com Bawaal with Janhvi Kapoor. Both the actors are currently busy with their next OTT project which was recently announced at a star-studded event. It was during this function that both of them came on stage and had fun pulling each other’s legs. While filmmaker Shoojit Sircar announced his new project Be Happy with Abhishek Bachchan, the latter was quick to tease Varun. Calling him an inspiration, Times Of India quoted Abhishek saying, “I want to be like you.”

Responding to his humorous dig, Varun stated, “That’s not true. You’re our inspiration.” To this, Junior Bachchan reacted, “Give me your directors or give me your dad.” Varun was also quick to highlight the fact that Abhishek’s father Amitabh Bachchan is an acclaimed star and he would like to take him home. “You give me your dad, then,” Varun funnily requested.

  • Janhvi Kapoor REVEALS her parents did not approve of her first boyfriend; says, ‘My first ever…’

Janhvi Kapoor REVEALS her parents did not approve of her first boyfriend; says, ‘My first ever…’

Janhvi Kapoor was subjected to a lot of judgment when she made her Bollywood debut with the film Dhadak in 2018. The fact that she was the daughter of late actress Sridevi and film producer Boney Kapoor made her the center of the nepotism debate in Bollywood. But, after the romantic drama film became a commercial success, it was accepted that she was more than her filmy family background. Then came Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, Good Luck Jerry, Mili, and recently, Bawaal.

Janhvi is as much in her family as she is in her career. In a recent interview, Janhavi revealed that her parents were conservative and strict when it came to her being in a relationship.

Janhvi Kapoor talks about her first-ever relationship

In a conversation with Kusha Kapila on Swipe Ride, Janhvi spilled the beans about her first boyfriend and how her relationship with him ended because of her parents.

She said, “My first ever serious boyfriend was that same ‘chup-chup ke milenge’ (meet in hiding) ‘jhooth bol bol ke’ (we will lie about each other) all of that and there was a thrill in that but unfortunately, that relationship ended because I had to lie so much and mom and dad were like ‘No you will never have a boyfriend’ and they were very conservative. And that’s when I realized having your parents’ approval and having transparency with them makes everything so easy. It makes you feel so much more confident about your decisions. And having them to share things with and vice-versa, it’s just a very wholesome experience.”

The actress says your decisions change when you are open with your parents

She further added that your decisions also change when you are open with your parents. “If you feel confident about like ya, I am seeing this person, I can get him home, like my father is okay with it and he’s happy with my choice, it makes you believe in the relationship more. Okay, I must be doing something right.”

Furthermore, she also admitted that Bollywood has influenced her expectations of love a lot. “There’s a lot of fun in staring out of the window, watching the raindrops fall.”

    Janhvi Kapoor’s work

After recently sharing screentime with Varun Dhawan in Nitesh Tiwari’s Bawaal, Janhvi will be next seen with Rajkummar Rao in Mr. and Mrs. Mahi. Janhvi has been shooting for the drama Ulajh. Additionally, a Telugu movie Devara is also on the cards which also stars Jr. NTR.
