  • Work on WA’s Vantage Bridge paused for the season

    [ad_1]

Work on I-90 along central Washington’s Vantage Bridge has paused for the season, after months of lane closures and construction work.

Since last spring, crews have been working to repair the aging bridge deck, and the project has been ongoing since 2024. During that time, the speed limit was reduced, lanes were closed, and space was limited while trailers, equipment and trucks were parked on the bridge.

Contractors wrapped up work for the season on Friday, ahead of the typical freezing central Washington weather expected this winter.

    What’s next:

All lanes of the bridge are now back open, and the nine-foot width restrictions have been removed. Traffic officials note the 55 mph speed limit remains in effect, as well as some rough transitions between the old and new sections of the bridge deck.

Work is scheduled to resume next spring.

  • Ubisoft launches its new Tencent-backed subsidiary

    [ad_1]

Ubisoft has launched — and named — its Tencent-backed subsidiary. Vantage Studios is the first of the company’s “creative houses” under a previously-announced reorganization. The new studio will oversee the company’s tentpole franchises: Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry and Rainbow Six.

The news follows Ubisoft’s March announcement of a new subsidiary with a €1.16 billion ($1.36 billion) investment from Tencent. The Chinese company took a minority ownership stake in Vantage as part of the deal. In July, Ubisoft named the new subsidiary’s co-CEOs: Christophe Derennes and Charlie Guillemot.

“Our focus is on evolving Ubisoft’s operating model to bring more focus, more autonomy and more accountability to the teams so they can stay closely attuned to our players,” Guillemot said at the time. “Decision making will be quicker, and it will also be easier to pivot when we need to change course.”

Ubisoft’s announcement today reflected that language. The idea is to give its developers “a higher level of autonomy” at Vantage and future studios. It wants the new structure to enable “a shorter pathway between gathering and implementing player feedback.”

Vantage is the only creative house the parent company has announced. The company will set up future ones “under the banner of a shared DNA and development expertise.” However, it’s unclear what other creative houses will work on, with Vantage taking over Ubisoft’s bread-and-butter franchises.

Vantage’s team will be spread across Ubisoft’s offices in Montréal, Quebec City, Sherbrooke, Saguenay, Barcelona and Sofia. Multiple gaming publications, including GamesIndustry.biz, reported that the studio began operations today. Ubisoft is said to have chosen “Vantage Studios” based on a vote by its 2,300 employees. As for Tencent, it will reportedly act in an advisory role, with the co-CEOs having the final word.

Ubisoft was due for some big changes. The company has endured big-name flops, studio closures and layoffs. At least Assassin’s Creed: Shadows has done well.

Incidentally, Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry and Rainbow Six titles were among those added to Game Pass on Wednesday. Microsoft seems to have intended for the announcement to soften the blow of the service’s 50 percent price hike. I’m not so sure it worked.

    Press Release

    Mar 22, 2022

VANTAGE, a highly anticipated, high-energy, cross-cultural celebration through dance, diversity, and positive dialog, debuts at the OCD Theater in San Francisco, California, April 7-10. Presented by ZiRu Dance — a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) non-profit dance company founded by Philein Wang — VANTAGE was created as a catalyst for social justice, inclusion, and community.

An acclaimed dancer-choreographer, Wang, Artistic Director at ZiRu Dance, describes VANTAGE as sitting at the intersection of movement, technology, cultural identity, and most importantly — social justice. “VANTAGE is a vibrant collaborative effort from four distinct cultural vantage points, including Asian American, African American, Mixed Race, and LatinX,” she points out.

Nearly a year in the making, VANTAGE features the soaring artistry of four top choreographers, each one depicting their cultural heritage, including Wang, representing Chinese/Taiwanese Americans, Christian Burns, European Caucasian/mixed race (HAPA), Winifred Harris, African Americans, and Alejandro Perez, LatinX. “They’re not only gifted artists, but they believe deeply in our overarching vision for VANTAGE, having either experienced racial injustice, or known somebody who has,” she added. “I love that they’re optimistic about their lives, their communities, and the future!”

VANTAGE was conceived during the pandemic when Wang, who was born in Michigan to Taiwanese and Chinese parents, became alarmed by the dramatic upswing in Xenophic slurs, assaults, and hate crimes on individuals of Asian descent. “Most Asian Americans are encouraged to remain silent about such incidents, myself included. But as hatred and violent behavior spread during the pandemic, I became frightened for my children’s future,” explains Wang, a former dancer at the renowned Cloudgate Dance Theater of Taiwan.

She says a pivotal moment occurred when a neighbor visiting Napa with his family was “flipped off” by a white couple for no reason. “I was shocked, especially given the area,” she said. “Here we were locked down, no way to travel to another country, and social injustices were occurring all over.  I needed to do something, so I reached out to my network encouraging people to share their stories and report any issues to authorities. And that was the start of VANTAGE.”

Wang, whose innovative artform combines modern dance, ballet, Chinese martial arts (wushu) and Tai Chi, says VANTAGE is a joyful labor of love. “It’s only when we share our stories, and advocate for change peacefully, can we end the cycle of silence and injustice,” concluded Wang, who studied at the famous Beijing Ballet Academy and has performed/choreographed worldwide.

She added that each dance performance will be followed by a moderated panel discussion with all four cultures represented by their respective choreographers, along with several special guests. “There will also be a Q&A session for the audience and information about advocacy groups in hopes of building a significant grassroots coalition through the arts.”
