USF opens conference tournament with 81-59 rout of East Carolina

    [ad_1]

FORT WORTH, Texas — The University of South Florida Bulls returned to the hardwood in style Friday.

The top-seed in the American Athletic Conference men’s basketball tournament, the Bulls (now 24-6, 17-2 in American) pounded East Carolina (now 16-17, 7-12) in a quarterfinal game on Friday.

Kobe Knox scored 17 points for USF, and Selton Miguel added another 17 off the bench for USF, who had four players overall that scored in double figures.

The Bulls coasted to a 44-30 lead at halftime and never looked back, advancing to a Saturday afternoon game.

USF shot an impressive 45.2 percent (14-31) from behind the three-point arc. The Bulls had only nine turnovers, to 13 for ECU, whose ended with the loss.

The Bulls, who fell out of the AP Top 25 poll after last week’s regular-season finale at Tulsa, had defeated East Carolina 71-60 in their only meeting earlier this season.

The loss at Tulsa ended USF’s program-best 15-game winning streak.

The conference championship game is on Sunday at 3:15 p.m.

No. 24 USF beats Tulane, extends winning streak to 15 games

    [ad_1]

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Chris Youngblood had 29 points and five assists and No. 24 South Florida won its 15th straight game, beating Tulane 85-72 on Tuesday night.

Kasean Pryor scored 13 points and Selton Miguel added 12 for the Bulls (23-5, 16-1 American Athletic Conference), the conference’s regular-season champions. USF was playing its first home game and second overall as a team ranked in the Top 25 in the program’s half-century history.

“Just really proud of this group,” first-year USF coach Amir Abdur-Rahim said. “They just keep responding. Their resolve just keeps showing up.”

Jaylen Forbes scored 24 points for Tulane (13-16, 4-13), which has lost seven straight, the team’s longest losing streak since an eight-game skid in 2019-20.

Forbes picked up his fourth foul with 5:49 to play and Tulane trailing 69-67. After USF’s Brandon Stroud made a layup, Forbes went to the bench and the Bulls got two baskets from Youngblood and a 3-pointer from Stroud for a 78-67 lead.

Tulane was held without a field goal over the game’s final three minutes.

“Focused on getting stops because they were scoring a little more than we would like, and we know once we get our defense going there’s no telling what we can do from there,” Youngblood said.

Youngblood scored 12 points as USF took a 44-43 lead at halftime. Forbes shot 5 for 7 from 3-point range and had 17 points in a first half that featured 13 lead changes.

    BIG PICTURE

Tulane: Entered 20th in the nation in scoring at 82.6 points, but were allowing 80.

South Florida: Is poised to make its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2012 after winning its first regular-season conference championship. This is just the second winning season for the Bulls since 2012. USF has reached the tourney three times.

    SPREADING THE WORD

Abdur-Rahim had a message for naysayers of the AAC.

“All these people who do the net rankings or whatever, man, you come spend a night in the American Conference, ok,” Abdur-Rahim said. “Our league is dang good, top to bottom. Our league is one of the best in the country.”

    HARD CONTACT

Forbes and Miguel collided six minutes into the game and were down on the floor for a period of time. Both returned after missing a few minutes.

    MILESTONE WITHIN REACH

Forbes has 1,830 career points and is 12 away from passing John Williams for fourth place in Tulane history.

  • No. 25 USF beats Charlotte 76-61 for 14th straight win

No. 25 USF beats Charlotte 76-61 for 14th straight win

    [ad_1]

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Being ranked for the first time in school history hasn’t impacted South Florida’s momentum.

Chris Youngblood scored 17 points, Kasean Pryor had 16 points and nine rebounds, and the 25th-ranked Bulls beat Charlotte 76-61 on Saturday for their 14th straight win, clinching the American Athletic Conference regular-season title outright.

Selton Miguel chipped in with 13 points for the Bulls (22-5, 15-1), who haven’t lost since Jan. 7 and entered the AP Top 25 for the first time ever earlier this week.

“It’s different, and I’m not going to give you some coach speak that it’s not,” South Florida coach Amir Abdur-Rahim said. “You have a different target on your back now.”

But he said he’s stressed to his players that they need to focus on “the same old boring habits” to continue winning.

“There’s still a lot of season left and if you want to rest on being ranked we aren’t going to make as much noise as we can,” Abdur-Rahim said.

Last year Florida Atlantic, another American Athletic Conference team, surged late in the season and made a memorable run to the Final Four. Abdur-Rahim believes the conference is loaded this year with four or five teams deserving of making the NCAA Tournament.

Lu’Cye Patterson had 17 points for Charlotte (17-11, 11-5), which had its eight-game home win streak snapped.

Charlotte entered the game looking for its second home victory over a Top 25 team after upsetting then-No. 17 Florida Atlantic 70-68 on Jan. 6.

And the 49ers were sharp early on, jumping out to a 12-7 lead against the Bulls after making 5 of 9 shots to open the game. But the Bulls would storm back to take a 33-28 lead at the break, stepping up their defense and holding the 49ers to 5-of-18 shooting for the remainder of the first half.

Pryor’s 3-pointer from the corner gave the Bulls their first double-digit lead less than two minutes into the second half and Charlotte never mounted a serious challenge.

Pryor drove across the lane a few moments later, dribbled between his legs and made a step-back jumper from the foul line while drawing a foul for a 3-point play to increase the lead.

Charlotte continued to struggle with missed shots and turnovers in the second half, and Kobe Knox scored on back-to-back offensive rebounds, including a powerful two-handed dunk to push the lead to 17.

There was a controversial moment with 2:47 remaining when Pryor grabbed a defensive rebound and, while struggling to find an outlet due to a three-man trap under the basket, threw a hard pass directly into the face of Charlotte’s Igor Milicic, causing him to fall to the floor.

Officials reviewed the play but determined it wasn’t worthy of an intentional foul.

After the replay was shown on the scoreboard, Pryor was booed loudly every time he touched the ball for the remainder of the game, and the Halton Arena crowd erupted with cheers when he missed a free throw with about two minutes remaining.

Charlotte coach Aaron Fearne said he doesn’t think Pryor meant to hit Milicic in the face.

“I don’t think so,” Fearne said. “I think he was in trouble and falling out of bounds near the baseline.”

Pryor was not made available after the game for interviews.

    THE BIG PICTURE

South Florida: The Bulls survived their first week in the AP Top 25 with wins over Southern Methodist and Charlotte. They’ve won 20 of their last 21 games overall will be the No. 1 overall seed. They should be a lock to make the NCAA Tournament even if they falter in conference play.

Charlotte: The 49ers were picked to finish 13th in the AAC this season, but have exceeded expectations and have been competitive in nearly every conference game. But this was the 49ers’ third straight loss, so they don’t have a lot momentum with the conference tourney approaching.

South Florida rallies from 20 down to stun No. 10 Memphis 74-73

    [ad_1]

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — After escaping several games with last-second shots, No. 10 Memphis finally got burned.

Kasean Pryor made a go-ahead free throw with 4 seconds left, and South Florida rallied from a 20-point deficit to stun the Tigers 74-73 on Thursday night.

Pryor finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds, and reserve Selton Miguel led USF with 23 points, going 5 of 10 from 3-point range. The Bulls (10-4, 3-1 American Athletic Conference) have won eight of nine and ended a 10-game winning streak for the Tigers (15-3, 4-1), who hadn’t lost since a narrow defeat at Mississippi on Dec. 2. Memphis moved into the top 10 this week.

“This one hurts because we worked so hard to get to this level,” Memphis coach Penny Hardaway said.

South Florida’s comeback was the second-largest in its history. The Bulls beat a ranked team for the first time since topping Louisville on Feb. 29, 2012, and knocked off a top-10 opponent for the first time since a win over Georgetown on Feb. 3, 2010.

Coach Amir Abdur-Rahim was doused with a celebratory bucket full of water when he entered the postgame locker room.

“It’s not about us,” Abdur-Rahim said. “It’s about the University of South Florida. … This is a great win for the University of South Florida, and this group of kids who allow us to push them.”

With the game tied at 73-all, Pryor took an inbound pass alone in the paint and elevated for dunk but took a hard foul from Nae’Qwan Tomlin. Pryor made the first free throw but missed the second.

Quinerly, who hit two game-winning 3-pointers during Memphis’ winning streak — against SMU and Tulsa — had a chance to do it again, but this time he missed a 3 at the buzzer.

Asked if Memphis got complacent with the early big lead and the escapes in close games, Tomlin replied: “Probably.”

“(South Florida) came out and played real hard, so credit to them,” he said.

David Jones led Memphis with 25 points and Quinerly finished with 15. Chris Youngblood had 13 points for USF.

Memphis led 52-32 early in the second half and USF responded by going on a 9-0 run with Pryor, Kobe Knox and Brandon Stroud each making a 3. The Bulls inched closer throughout the period and Jayden Reid tied it with a layup with 37 seconds left — his only basket of the game. A turnover by Quinerly helped set up USF for Pryor’s decisive free throw.

Jones had 18 points in the first half — including a run of 11 straight — for Memphis, which led 47-32 at the break. The Tigers were effective in transition, finishing the half with a 17-0 advantage in fast-break points and scoring 14 points off eight Bulls turnovers.

“Bad loss,” Hardaway said. “National TV. Scoring 26 points in the second half after scoring 46 in the first. But when you are not playing team basketball that can happen.”

Abdur-Rahim believes the Bulls have the potential for more impressive wins this season.

“We’re not going to get drunk off success,” he said.

    BIG PICTURE

South Florida: The Bulls, who improved to 1-3 on the road this season, upped their intensity in the second half and didn’t panic when Memphis took its big lead.

Memphis: The Tigers shot poorly after the break. As they’ve done many times this season, they let an opponent stay close, making the game more interesting than it appeared it would be. This time, it cost them at the finish.

USF’s Brown tosses 3 TD in 45-0 rout of Syracuse

    [ad_1]

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Byrum Brown threw three touchdown passes and became the second USF quarterback to throw for more than 4,000 yards in a season, leading the Bulls to a 45-0 rout of undermanned Syracuse in the RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl.

Brown, a redshirt freshman, closed out his outstanding season with 4,037 passing yards. Only Quinton Flowers has thrown for more yards in a season for the Bulls.

Syracuse (6-7) could only hope for such a QB performance. With starting quarterback Garrett Shrader missing the game following shoulder surgery, Syracuse interim coach Nunzio Campanile employed a hodgepodge approach at quarterback. The plan went about as well as it sounds.

Tight end Dan Villari, a former QB at Michigan, drew the start, with backup quarterback Braden Davis and running back LeQuint Allen Jr. also sharing snaps for Syracuse. The Orange offense managed 159 yards against a Bulls defense that surrendered more than 450 yards per game during the regular season.

But, help is on the way for Syracuse. After leading Ohio State to an 11-1 regular season, quarterback Kyle McCord entered the transfer portal and signed with Orange. Both McCord and incoming coach Fran Brown attended the Boca Bowl.

Syracuse nearly tied the score at 7-7, but officials flagged defensive back Alijah Clark’s touchdown return of a Brown lateral because of a blindside block penalty. The Orange still took possession in Bulls territory, but a botched field goal attempt resulted in Aamaris Brown’s 64-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

Tramel Evans provided USF (7-6) its second scoop-and-score by returning a fumble by Davis 61 yards in the closing seconds of the first half, giving the Bulls a 31-0 lead at the break.

Sean Atkins caught two of Brown’s touchdown passes. A former walk-on in his fifth year at USF, Atkins caught six passes for 93 yards in the game and became the first Bulls player to surpass 1,000 receiving yards in a season.

Brown finished 19 for 26 for 214 yards.

USF’s defense forced four turnovers and limited Syracuse to 1 of 17 on third downs.

The shutout is USF’s first since 2009 against Charleston Southern.

    THE TAKEAWAY

Syracuse: Now the dust can settle a bit, after coach Fran Brown – who didn’t lead the Orange in the bowl game – landed the best recruiting class in Syracuse’s modern history. Expect the Orange to have quite a bit of buzz going into 2024.

South Florida: The Bulls put together one of the best turnarounds in the nation this season, after winning four of their last 37 games coming into 2023. USF has Alabama and Miami on next year’s schedule as part of its non-conference slate.

    UP NEXT

Syracuse: Scheduled to host Ohio in the season opener on Aug. 31.

South Florida: Scheduled to host Bethune-Cookman in the season opener on Aug. 31.

Looking to continue upward climb, USF takes on Syracuse

TAMPA, Fla. — The University of South Florida’s steps towards a return to college football relevancy takes another step Thursday night as the program returns to the postseason.

After winning just four games in total between the 2020 and 2022 seasons, first-year coach Alex Golesh has guided the Bulls to a 6-6 mark this year and an appearance in the Boca Raton Bowl.

USF will face off against Syracuse (also 6-6) Thursday at 8 p.m. from Boca Raton. The Orange comes in as a slight favorite, according to odds.

Winning the Boca Bowl and finishing 7-6 will be a positive season end for Golesh and the Bulls. But there are much bigger things on the mind of the USF program.

“It’s been five years since we played a bowl game, which is crazy in a lot of ways,” Golesh said. “To get here in Year 1 and continue to lay a foundation for what we’re building in Tampa is absolutely huge for us.”

That building includes a 2024 recruiting class announced Wednesday that ranked #1 in the American Athletic Conference and #49 nationally.

And South Florida brass recently unveiled the first renderings of what will be its long-sought on-campus stadium with groundbreaking scheduled next year and a first game target of 2027.

As for tonight’s game, expect points.

The Bulls topped 40 points three times and scored more than 30 points in six games.

Quarterback Byrum Brown passed for more than 3,000 yards and 23 touchdowns this season. He added another 700-plus yards rushing and 11 more scores on the ground.

Running back Nay’Quan Wright led USF with 757 yards rushing and seven scores while former walk-on Sean Atkins has developed into a big-time receiving threat.

With 86 catches and 961 yards this season, Atkins has set USF single-season receiving records for catches and yards. Now, the 5-foot-9 receiving dynamo is set to become USF’s first single-season 1,000-yard receiver (with 39 yards tonight).

But the Bulls’ defense (or lack of) is another story.

When USF plays any defense, the Bulls have been tough to beat. They were 6-1 this season when holding opponents to 30 points or less; the one loss there was a 17-3 defeat to Southeastern Conference champion and College Football Playoff qualifier Alabama.

When the Bulls allowed more than 30 points, they were 0-5.

Syracuse had a magic number as well this season, geared toward the offensive side. When the Orange scored 22 or fewer points, they were 0-6. Score more than 22, they were 6-0.

USF has gone 8-2 against Syracuse all-time as this game is a reunion of past Big East rivals.

TAMPA, Fla. — With “genuine excitement,” the University of South Florida on Tuesday released the first three renderings of its planned on-campus stadium.

The Board of Trustees met Tuesday morning to receive an update on the plans after the university terminated a design-build agreement, and it opted for a more traditional construction management model.

    What You Need To Know

    •  USF released renderings of its planned on-campus football stadium
    •  Groundbreaking for the stadium is expected in fall 2024
    •  The first game played at the new stadium is set for August 2027

So far, the school has raised more than $43 million of its $50 million goal for the stadium project. That includes a $6 million gift from the USF Federal Credit Union to name the walkway that will lead into the main entrance of the stadium, where the football team’s traditional pregame Bulls Stampede will take place.

“To me, it’s just the next step in the evolution of the whole university, quite frankly, as an important engagement tool that will bring us together as one USF better than ever before,” said Michael Kelly, vice president of athletics.

The stadium, which is scheduled to open in fall 2027, will include:

    • An east-west build to help maximize shade for daytime events.

    • A dedicated section for students in the west end of the stadium that includes a design featuring Bull horns and amenities that will cater to the student experience.

    • An open concourse around a majority of the stadium that provides views of the field, even as fans are walking to concession or restroom areas.

    • A large tailgating space on the north side of the stadium.

    • A variety of premium seating options, including suites, loge boxes and club areas.

The University of South Florida on Tuesday released the first three renderings of its new on-campus stadium.

USF officials said the initial renderings are conceptual and will develop as the design process continues and more elements are finalized. The design process included feedback from students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members.

“Since we first announced plans to build an on-campus stadium at the University of South Florida, it has become the topic I hear about most often from our passionate supporters. There is a genuine excitement within our community,” USF President Rhea Law said. “We’re thrilled to offer the first images of the stadium that will activate our campus in ways we never have before and will make a positive impact on our university for generations to come.”

Students at USF are excited about the new stadium, and one pointed out that even if they won’t still be attending USF by the time the stadium is built, it will give them a reason to come back.

“My dad graduated in ’96 so I’ve been coming to games. I went to my first game when I was 3 years old and ever since then I’ve been coming back,” Alisha Kurian said.

In a picture her dad took at her first game, you see Kurian sound asleep in her seat. She said being a Bull is a family affair.

“I think that giving students their own stadium, and student-athletes a space to call their own to play in, not only is that a great thing, but also alumni having a reason to come back to campus for games and for that environment really elevates the whole USF experience,” she said.

Kurian said even though she won’t be a USF student when the stadium is built, it will give her and her dad a reason to keep coming back, and keep their tradition alive.

“He absolutely cannot wait,” Kurian said. “He’s probably more excited than anyone else. I know and he’s hoping I have three younger siblings, so maybe one of them will be here when the stadium is built.”

Signature signage will showcase the newly named USF Federal Credit Union Champions Way, located off USF Genshaft Drive.

“Our university will proudly feature one of the nation’s most beautiful and community-centered stadium entranceways,” USF Foundation Chief Executive Officer Jay Stroman said.

Stadium planning committee co-chairs Stroman and Kelly said the next major steps are to release more detailed stadium renderings in spring 2024 and to hold a groundbreaking ceremony in fall 2024.

TAMPA, Fla. – With the University of South Florida’s win over Charlotte Saturday, the Bulls are planning December football for the first time since 2018.

USF (6-6) got four touchdown passes and a running score from quarterback Byrum Brown as the Bulls closed out the regular season with a 48-14 win.

    What You Need To Know

    • USF set to learn its bowl destination
    • Bulls (6-6) headed back to a bowl game for first time since 2018
    • USF increased win total from one game last season to six in Coach Alex Golesh’s first season

The Bulls, which won one game last season and four in the past three seasons, last played in the postseason in the 2018 Gasparilla Bowl, a loss to Marshall.

USF coach Alex Golesh led the turnaround in his first season in Tampa and stressed the extra weeks of practice and a game to play in this late in the season are all positives for the program.

“In this day of modern-day college football where you’re putting together a roster to go compete, for us to be able to go from one win to six wins and now an opportunity to go get a seventh, says a lot about the guys that bought in,” Golesh said. “Now we got to continue to work and go finish this thing off with another win.”

So where will USF go bowling and who might they face?

There is the possibility of a USF-UCF matchup in the Dec. 22 Gasparilla Bowl in Raymond James Stadium.

There’s also chances of USF playing in the Boca Raton Bowl, Birmingham Bowl or the Cure Bowl in Orlando. Potential opponents include South Alabama, James Madison or Georgia State, according to projections from ESPN and CBS Sports.

UCF (6-6) mostly struggled in its first season in the Big 12 but finished strong with a with 27-13 win against Houston.

The Knights, who shook off a five-game losing streak this season, are headed to a bowl game for the eighth straight season.

Bowl matchups will be announced on Sunday, Dec. 3.
