    “There’s a lot of geographic diversity in the new rankings,” said U.S. News and World Report contributing editor Tim Smart.

    Midland, Michigan, came in at the No. 1 spot, followed by Homosassa Springs in Florida and the Woodlands and Spring, both in Texas.

    Lynchburg, Virginia, came in 10th; Harrisonburg came in 77th. Ellicott City in Maryland came in 89th.

    “Midland, Michigan did, in fact, secure the top spot in the rankings, mainly because of good scores on quality of life, affordability and the overall tax environment for retirees,” Smart said.

    He said the best places to retire list expanded its reach this year, looking at more than 850 U.S. cities, and ranking the top 250.

    “This was more granular and focused on cities. We also looked at population and migration patterns of seniors, 55 plus, to see where people were going and have been going,” Smart said.

    For the rankings, they surveyed people 45 and up on what matters most to them. And for the first time in several years, quality of life ranked higher than affordability.

    “While inflation is still higher than people would like, I think people have come to grips with that, and now maybe they’re thinking quality of life is what really matters,” Smart said.

    Children’s National Hospital in D.C. has been named one of the best children’s hospitals in the United States, according to the latest rankings from U.S. News & World Report.

    Children’s National was one of 10 children’s hospitals to be named to the 2024-2025 Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll. Those hospitals “really have the maximum breadth and depth of excellence,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis at U.S. News.

    The annual rankings are compiled by evaluating children’s hospitals across the country in various categories, Harder said, including specialties such as cardiology, cancer, orthopedics and neonatology.

    In response to a rise in need for youth mental health services, the outlet added an 11th category — behavioral health — to the hospitals it evaluated this year.

    “The goal of having these different specialty rankings is to help parents and families who need a particular type of care identify the right hospital for their child’s needs,” Harder said.

    Children’s National is the lone children’s hospital to make the outlet’s rankings in D.C. It’s ranked in the top five in two specialties — pediatric cancer and pediatric neurology and neurosurgery.

    In Maryland, meanwhile, Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore is ranked first overall. It’s ranked among the best in the U.S. in all of the 11 specialty areas evaluated, Harder said.

    Three hospitals in Virginia made the rankings — University of Virginia Children’s Hospital in Charlottesville is the highest ranked in the state, followed by Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU and Inova L.J. Murphy Children’s Hospital in Falls Church, which is ranked one of the best in the country in neonatology.

    U.S. News reviews dozens of quality indicators in the specialty areas “to help give parents a starting point when they’re confronted with a medical challenge for their family,” Harder said.

    The 2024-2025 honor roll list, in alphabetic order, includes:

    • Boston Children’s Hospital
    • Children’s Hospital Colorado, Aurora
    • Children’s Hospital Los Angeles
    • Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
    • Children’s National Hospital, Washington, D.C.
    • Cincinnati Children’s
    • Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Columbus, Ohio
    • Rady Children’s Hospital, San Diego
    • Seattle Children’s Hospital
    • Texas Children’s Hospital, Houston

    What does Naples, Florida, and Boise, Idaho, have in common? According to a new ranking by U.S. News and World Report, they lead the pack for the 150 Best Places to Live.

    What do Naples, Florida, and Boise, Idaho, have in common? According to a new ranking by U.S. News and World Report, they lead the pack for the 150 Best Places to Live.

    “I think what did surprise me the most was the variety of different places at the top of the list,” said Erika Giovanetti with U.S. News and World Report.

    Topping the list is Naples, and it’s not just the sunshine behind the desire to live there but also the strong job market.

    “Naples has a really low unemployment rate and relatively high salaries,” she said. “It’s a resort city. So of course, there’s the tourism industry, but it’s also a place where a lot of retirees live. So, a lot of health care work in Naples.”

    U.S. News ranked the cities based on their job markets, value, quality of life and desirability.

    Boise was No. 2 and did better than Naples when it comes to quality of life. Colorado Springs, Colorado, was No. 3 followed by Charlotte and Raleigh in North Carolina, which rounded off the top five.

    D.C. came in at No. 44 — not bad for a big city, according to Giovanetti.

    “It was really lifted up by its strong job market and quality of life,” she said.

    The cost of living was a big mark against the city, which left the District, and several other pricey big cities, further down on the list.

    No other cities in the D.C. region made the ranking. In Virginia, Virginia Beach did come in at No. 8 and Richmond ranked No. 64. In Maryland, Baltimore was ranked No. 118 and Salisbury was No. 126.

    U.S. News & World Report released its latest rankings of the nation’s best high schools and one well-known school from the D.C. region remains part of the list.

    U.S. News & World Report released its latest rankings of the nation’s best high schools and one well-known school from the D.C. region remains part of the list.

    Following controversial changes to its admissions policy in 2021 to boost diversity, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Virginia remains the top ranked school in the D.C. region and 14th in the nation, slipping from the top 10. It’s also the 5th ranked STEM school in the nation.

    “The top five in this area are — Thomas Jefferson is number one…The School Without Walls, they’re number two. They’re in the District….number two in the metro D.C. area.” LaMont Jones, managing editor of education at U.S. News & World Report, said. “Another in D.C. is number three (in the metro area), Benjamin Banneker Academic High School.”

    When asked how it complied its list of the best schools of the D.C. region list, Jones said schools that emphasized graduation rates received higher consideration. He added that the top schools in the D.C. region also represent some of the best students from underrepresented demographic groups based on race and income.

    “They are pretty much firing on all of those cylinders,” Jones said.

    The publication’s national rankings evaluate about 18,000 public high schools across the country. It uses multiple metrics that show students with “outstanding outcomes” in state assessments in multiple subjects that will prepare them for college, Jones said.

    “Also, students earning qualifying scores on Advance Placement and International Baccalaureate exams, those college level exams and also schools where their students graduated at higher proportions,” He said. “That’s also very important.”

    The rankings offer a starting point for parents to understand a school’s academic performance, whether it’s a prospective school or a school that their student is already attending.

    “This is one tool they can use — as long-term highly respected tool — to look at as a resource to see where they may want to relocate or where they want to live for a really high education for their child,” Jones said.

    The District’s top high schools are:
    1. School Without Walls High School
    2. Benjamin Banneker Academic High School
    3. Basis DC
    4. District of Columbia International School
    5. McKinley Technology High School
    Maryland’s top high schools are:
    1. Eastern Technical High School, Baltimore County
    2. Walt Whitman High School
    3. Poolesville High School
    4. Thomas Wootton High School
    5. Winston Churchill High School
    Virginia’s top high schools are:
    1. Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology
    2. Langley High School
    3. Open High School, Richmond
    4. Oakton High School
    5. McLean High School
