Urban Outfitters’ Reclectic store to host clothing customization workshop

Reclectic, which sells discounted merchandise from URBN brands at the Philadelphia Mills mall, is hosting a clothing customization workshop in honor of Earth Month.

The workshop will be held on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the store. During the event, which will be put on in collaboration with textile recycling nonprofit FabScrap, attendees can use fabric waste to accessorize clothing that they select from Reclectic’s inventory.

MORE: This year’s Fan Expo Philadelphia will bring notable film and game actors to Philly

Tickets for the event are available online for $50 each. Attendees will be invited to shop Reclectic’s inventory one hour before it opens to the public. Each customer will receive a small shopping bag to fill with up to five products, including one shirt and one pair of pants or skirt to use in the workshop.

Then, staff from URBN and FabScrap will assist attendees in using fabric waste patches and scraps, as well as other customization techniques, to create unique, eco-friendly clothes.

Net profits from ticket sales will be donated to FabScrap, which has made use of nearly 100,000 pounds of fabric waste — the equivalent of about 10,641 trees planted — from Philly-based URBN alone, according to the company.

Reclectic, which opened in August, carries a wide variety of new products, unsold samples created during the design process and lightly used merchandise ready for thrifting from all of URBN’s brands — including Anthropologie, Free People and Urban Outfitters. Inventory from URBN’s clothing rental program Nuuly is also available for purchase.

The 40,000-square-foot space houses an ever-changing selection of apparel, shoes, accessories, furniture and home goods. Products are discounted up to 60%.

Reclectic is open Monday through Tuesday from 12-7 p.m., Wednesday through Thursday from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Friday through Saturday from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sunday from 12-6 p.m.

  • I Just Came From Australia—This Is What All the Cool Girls Were Wearing

I Just Came From Australia—This Is What All the Cool Girls Were Wearing

Earlier this November, I felt downright giddy when I realized my Australia trip was right around the corner. A sunny reprieve in the middle of winter (okay, I live in California, but still)? Yes, please!

I was so blinded by my own sunny outlook that I chose to ignore my Australian relatives’ warnings. November, they warned me, was more akin to spring, and rain was far likelier than beach days. “Totally,” I agreed as I spread bikinis out on my bed.

Here’s the cold, hard truth: Melbourne is chilly. Weather-wise, it’s got the moody marine layer of San Francisco with a healthy dash of Seattle fog. It’s a gorgeous city but a gray city nonetheless! Your girl was freezing, her dreams of returning stateside a sun-kissed goddess dashed. Ever the optimist and buoyed by a daily diet of piping-hot meat pies, I chose to look on the bright side. I was 11 hours ahead of home, putting me in the unique position of living in the future, baby! With newfound zeal, I hit the streets, credit card at ready and a keen eagle eye trained on what the cool Melbourne girls were wearing.

  • You, Too, Can Dress Like Taylor Swift

You, Too, Can Dress Like Taylor Swift

I was in middle school during Tumblr’s prime era of influence. It was a simpler time, listening to Urban Outfitters records on an Urban Outfitters turntable and aspiring to be the most aesthetically pleasing version of yourself. We lived for artsy Instagram posts wearing chevron necklaces, reblogging edits of Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, and pairing hi-low skirts with Doc Martens. I still have vivid nightmares of black-and-white angsty Tumblr posts captioned with Lorde lyrics.

But, like any social media platform, there were different sides to Tumblr. There was the famed aesthetic side, ruled by angst and filters, but there was also the side ruled by fandoms.

Let me take you way back to 2014 when 5 Seconds of Summer was opening for the hit boy band, One Direction. Your go-to outfit was Converse (or Keds, thanks to Taylor Swift), skinny jeans, and an “I <3 British Boys (and one Irish!)” shirt. The vibe was an inscrutable mix of bohemian, preppy, and a little grunge. Times may have been simpler, but they weren’t more stylish.

But just like the angsty side of Tumblr, this side also considered Urban Outfitters and Free People their fashion meccas. Pretty much all sides of Tumblr were united by their devotion to these two stores. Urban had the band tees and vinyls, Free People had the free-spirited, whimsical pieces that emulated the Lana Del Rey vibe.

And while I’ve grown out of a few of these habits (re: hi-low skirts, chevron), some things never change. I still listen to One Direction as my guilty pleasure (I’m no longer a Louis girl), and I still shop at Free People.

What I love about Free People is that they create an idyllic fashion world of exciting prints, fabrics, and styles. Their clothing is versatile — good for date nights, work days, brunches, lounging, and working out. They’ve grown up with me, and their fashion is always precisely on-trend. They’ve also taught me that you can’t put a price on high-quality clothing.

In the world of Girl Math, Free People gets you the best bang for your buck. I still have FP tank tops and jeans from middle school that have years left of wear. Their clothes even start trends of their own. For example, actress and model Kaia Gerber genuinely The Quilted Dolman Jacket in every color. And the Freya Set has been heavily duped across the fashion market.

While Free People is iconic for the bohemian in you, it’s also famous due to the amount of celebrities who wear it. And these aren’t just brand deals. Celebs, they’re just like us: obsessed with the brand that keeps on giving.

    Taylor Swift In Free People

I went to a Free People event last month where they celebrated their winter boot collaboration with Sorel Footwear. They were gushing about how much Swift loved Free People, saying that whenever she goes on vacation, she shops there.

And they’re not lying, thanks to the thousands of Instagram accounts dedicated to what Taylor is wearing in every public appearance. A ton of her clothes are indeed affordable Free People options, which makes her style pretty easy to replicate!

Lately, we’ve been seeing more of Taylor since she’s extremely busy touring the world, dating NFL star Travis Kelce, re-recording her albums, and traversing around New York with her girl gang. This means we’ve gotten to see her in her Free People era and all its glory. Here are some of the best FP moments from Taylor herself:

  • A Guide To Men’s Summer Fashion 2023

    A Guide To Men’s Summer Fashion 2023

Summer is fast approaching. Before you know it I’ll be writing one of these articles about men’s fall fashion. Don’t let me get too ahead of myself here, I write this adjacent to the beach slightly sunburnt. But the easiest way to get a sense of what people are wearing when they’re out and about on their summer trips.

Whether you’re out on weekends sitting on a rooftop somewhere in New York City, or you’re at the beach somewhere admiring the waves, the summer is a great time to sit outside and admire fashion. The summer is when people feel more comfortable taking bigger risks with their fits.

Maybe it’s because there’s so much vacationing going on…you’ll never see half of these people again, so why not wear that crochet button-down you’ve had in your closet for a special occasion?

@notfashunjustin What to wear in the spring and summer time without breaking the bank #tiktokfashion#springsummerstyle#mensfashion#affordablefashion#frugalfashion#streetwear#ruleofthirds#proportions♬ Sunday – HNNY

If you’re lost on what’s going on in men’s fashion right now and need to refresh your closet this summer…or you just want to get some hot new pieces for the season…I’ve got you. I’ve compiled celeb styles, scoured
GQ, and found the best men’s fashion for summer 2023.

    The Basics

You’re going to need a few basic items to use as layering tools for your best summer fits. Think plain loose tanks and tees in neutral colors like white, black, and taupe to wear under button-downs or by themself. I always say that if you have a few basic shirts, you can make a billion outfits.

The key to these basics is that they are looser fit, which can complement any body type and gives your outfit a more fashionable touch.

@mgustini#greenscreen all look so good #fyp#foryoupage#men#mensfashion#fashion#styling#stylingadvice#streetwear#preppy#vintage#thrifting#corporate#work#summer#summeroutfits♬ original sound – grace

    The Materials

In these warmer months, don’t be afraid to play around with cooling materials such as linen, mesh, and crochet. Ironically, these are the top three materials that are popular in men’s fashion this summer. In fact, it’s all about crochet.

Looser knit shirts will help you stay cool while looking even cooler. Fabrics like mesh and crochet give your outfit a ’70s vibe that has been ever prevalent and popular in the fashion world for the past few years.

An easy outfit idea is to pair one short-sleeved button-down shirt of any fun material like linen with a loose-fit tank underneath, and a pair of tailored pants. It’s fun and casual, but stylish nonetheless. It looks classic on every man and is super easy to play around with and accessorize with a bucket hat or cool sneakers.

    The Bottoms

One of my favorite male everyday style icons is Jacob Elordi, who simply knows how to dress himself on all occasions. If you haven’t noticed, he’s become a fan of a looser fitting tailored bottom, which is also popular among male celebrities like Harry Styles, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Justin Bieber, and more.

A loose-fit linen pant or chino has become the summer staple for men everywhere. Sure, the classic fitted pants are still acceptable, but get more playful with the fit of your pants! It could be fun (and more comfortable).

Another popular summer bottom for men are shorts that can double as
swim trunks. They don’t necessarily have to look like they’re designed for swimming, but they can be super functional and quick-drying, which means they cool you down from the heat as well.

    The Tops

You’ve heard me mention basic tees and tanks as layering tools…and of course the popular short-sleeve button-down. Polo-esque shirts are (and always will be) a summer staple because of how multi-functional they are. A notched neck or a collared shirt can make you look more polished without having to try so hard.

Get playful with your shirts by taking the classics with a twist. A terry cloth or sweater material automatically makes your outfit more interesting. Keep it neutral and include pops of color in your accessories or shoes and you have an instant outfit.

  • Daisy Jones & The Six Inspired Trends To Catch Early

Daisy Jones & The Six Inspired Trends To Catch Early

In all my time on BookTok, there have only been a few novels that actually earned the hype. The algorithm crams book after book down your throat but then, surprisingly, you find one that’s well worth the wait. In this instance, I’m talking about Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

I read this a few years ago and forced everyone in my immediate circle to do the same the second I turned the last page. From start to finish, it’s flawless. It’s a fictionalized epic based on the notorious drama behind Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac. It’s as if you interviewed the tumultuous, mystical band and they left nothing on the table.

The book follows Daisy Jones, a mesmerizing artiste who was clearly born to be a star. It leads us through the 60’s along her inevitable rise to fame. Daisy had the looks, the voice, and the attitude — sleeping with rockstars and dabbling with drugs. At the same time, the band The Six led by the angsty Billy Dunne are taking off. When an eagle-eyed producer matches Daisy with The Six, the world is forever changed.

    Amazon Prime

Cue the drama. The merger of Daisy Jones + The Six goes on to impact the music industry as their internal drama becomes public. The tale twists and turns until one final concert at Chicago’s Soldier Field signals the end of their time together.

Now, years later, a rising journalist gets the chance to hear their sides of the story. It’s equal parts sex, drugs, and rock and roll.

The story is so addictive it can’t be missed. So if you’re not a reader, you’re in luck. The upcoming TV adaption debuts on March 3, 2023 on Amazon Prime. The 10 episode miniseries is already garnering buzz with a promising cast.

Riley Keough, daughter of the late Lisa Marie Presley and granddaughter of Elvis, will play the lead Daisy and Sam Claflin (Me Before You) will play Billy. Other notable names are Suki Waterhouse and Camila Morrone, who you may also know as Leonardo DiCaprio’s ex-girlfriend.

I can already feel a 70’s-style resurgence on the horizon. This is Gen-Z’s Almost Famous, without a doubt. The way the TikTok community will never be the same after this miniseries premiers. I don’t even know if SHEIN has enough bell bottoms in stock for the trend-hungry consumers.

Sometimes, you can sniff a trend from a mile away. Call me crazy, but I just know we are all going to obsess over the It Girls from Daisy Jones — just like we did with Euphoria. Get your record players out, here are the top trends Daisy Jones & The Six will reignite:

    A Curtain Bang Resurgence

No one did curtain bangs and blowouts quite like the women of the 70’s. Whip out those Revlon blow dry brushes (or Dyson Air Wraps for the blessed) and cut your front pieces. We are aiming for bombshell hair and wispy bangs.

Remember, blow dry the top parts and front pieces of your hair away from your face to get the utmost volume.

    The Bell Bottom

Honestly, I live for bell bottom jeans. While the baggy jean look has reigned for months, sometimes I like a little shape in my jeans. I’m not talking about anything crazy like skinny jeans, but a fitted thigh is all I need.

I guarantee you that every cast member of this show will at one point rock a pair…and I equally promise that every store will be pushing the 70’s favorite jeans by April.

    Band Tees

I can totally see a revival of retro band tees coming back into Urban Outfitters. The oversized vintage-style tee is all the rage, so slap on a picture of the Rolling Stones logo and you’re in business.

Nothing says “I’m with the band” quite like a vintage-inspired tee. This one from Urban is exactly what I’m talking about.

    Amazon Prime

    Record Players

Remember that era in 2014 when everyone went out and bought a Crosley record player with Tumblr-recommended aesthetic records like The Neighbourhood and The 1975? I just have the weirdest inkling that we are on the cusp of roaming around record stores yet again.

There’s no shame, my dining room wall is covered in vintage records I bought on a discount at my local record store. Bring on all the vinyl for me.

    Fur Vests

Anything fur-lined really. A fur vest is the ultimate accessory for your weekend outfit. Seriously, I act differently when I wear a fur vest. Add a pair of sunnies and you’re a rockstar with other places to be.

My personal rec is this Free People fur vest that’s perfect for literally any occasion.

  • Don’t Judge Me: This One Type of Skinny Jeans Is Still Cool and Chic

Don’t Judge Me: This One Type of Skinny Jeans Is Still Cool and Chic

Like a certain once-beloved apricot exfoliator, skinny jeans seem to have developed a bad reputation. If you balked at clicking on this article, I get it. Skinny jeans seem downright passé compared to the other myriad of denim options on the market. But hear me out: Sleeping on this style may mean missing out on a highly versatile category of bottoms.

Think of Audrey Hepburn in a turtleneck and topknot. An effortless French woman like Emmanuelle Alt breezing past in a Breton-stripe top. Evergreen Itgirl Kate Moss slinking around London in yet another flawless outfit. What do these looks have in common? All three are anchored by black skinny jeans, cropped at the ankle. The look is equal parts sophisticated, chic, and cool.

I Think These Elevated Basics Are Peak Cool, and You Can Get Them for Under $100

Basics are essential items to any wardrobe, mostly because they’re so versatile. They can be paired with other items (including statement pieces and other basics) no matter your personal style. If you find yourself scrambling to put outfits together even though you own a wardrobe full of clothes, it may be time to invest in some reliable basics such as tank tops, shirts, and dress pants. Owning some of these staples is also essential if you are looking to build a capsule wardrobe, a tightly edited selection of clothing that will last and can be worn for any occasion.

Just because they are called basics doesn’t mean these items have to be boring. A simple tank top can be designed in a variety of cuts, styles, and colorways. I selected essential pieces that will elevate any outfit, from black body-con dresses to blazers and slip skirts. And as it just so happens, there are a lot of options to choose from under the $100 price mark.
