  • A Playdate showcase is set for November 6

Panic is ready to show off some new games for its delightful Playdate. The company will run a Playdate Update showcase on November 6 at 1PM ET on its YouTube channel and website. The stream will include a look at some upcoming games for the system as well as highlights from this year that are included in the Playdate Catalog Fall Sale, which runs until November 13 at 1PM ET.

One of the items that’s on sale is Playdate Season 2, a run of weekly drops of neat games, including Fulcrum Defender (from Into The Breach developer Subset Games), puzzle platformer Taria & Como and roguelike CatchaDiablos. The wonderfully strange cable TV simulator Blippo+ is part of Season 2 as well. The season is on sale for the first time at $31. It typically costs $39.

Panic noted that Season 2 has sold more than 15,000 units, which surpassed the company’s expectations. Here’s hoping Panic announces Season 3 during the showcase. I have my fingers crossed that the company will reveal a version of the tragicomic adventure Time Flies (which it brought to Steam and PS5 this year) for the Playdate as well.

Meanwhile, Panic said the Playdate is in stock and available to buy for the holidays. Anyone in the US who snaps up the $229 console before November 30 will get free shipping, while tariff fees will be waived — the teeny yellow console should arrive in time for Christmas too.

  • A spooky NES platformer, more N++ and other new indie games worth checking out

Welcome to our latest roundup of what’s going on in the indie game space. I’ve reluctantly paused Ball x Pit for long enough to share some neat new releases and more details on upcoming games — some of which are arriving very soon. We’ve got a notable update for a classic as well.

Steam Next Fest is taking place at the minute, and you still have until Monday to join in by checking out some of the many, many demos that have gone live for the event. Thanks partially (okay, almost entirely) to being unable to escape Ball x Pit, I’ve only tried a fewm Next Fest demos so far.

I’m a fan of Aerial_Knight’s Never Yield and after last year’s sequel, it’s cool to see solo developer Neil Jones (aka Aerial_Knight) trying something totally different. Aerial_Knight’s DropShot is a skydiving first-person shooter with finger guns and dragons. It’s a single-player game in which the aim is to take out your opponents and reach the ground first. Like Jones’ previous games, it’s stylish and fast-paced. I’m planning to check out the full game when it arrives down the line.

It certainly helps to be a fast, accurate typer when you put words together for a living, but I wasn’t quick or precise enough to win any rounds in the Final Sentence demo. This is a battle royale for up to 100 players in which you’re at a typewriter and have to bash out sentences (or other strings of letters, numbers and symbols) in a race to the finish. If you run out of time, make too many mistakes or don’t win, it’s lights out, courtesy of the masked figure with a revolver who’s standing in front of you.

There are some nice touches here. Having to type out the rules in the first few rounds is a clever idea on the part of developer Button Mash. I haven’t won a round myself yet (I finished in second place a couple of times), but watched some streamers play. It’s very funny when the winning player flips the bird at the guy holding a revolver in front of them.

Final Sentence is coming to Steam later this year. Maybe I’ll have learned how to spell “sphinx” by then.

There are a few other Next Fest demos I’d like to try this weekend, namely:

I’ve been looking forward to Skate Story for forever, but I think I’m going to skip that demo. I’m already sold and I’m fine with waiting a couple more months before playing the whole thing.

There are a couple of showcases coming up next week that might be worth keeping an eye on. The third annual edition of DreadXP’s indie horror showcase is set for 1PM ET on October 23. You can catch that on the publisher’s YouTube channel.

Two hours later, you’ll be able to tune into the Galaxies Autumn showcase. This will feature more than 50 games, including world premieres, gameplay trailers and other announcements. Games that will be featured include PowerWash Simulator 2, Mouse: PI For Hire and Denshattack, all of which are firmly on my to-play list.

    New releases

Mister Scary is a weird little guy. I love when you get to play a game as a weird little guy. The game of the same name is a spooky NES homebrew platformer from Calgames.

Mister Scary can stomp on his enemies, or freeze or burn them after eating a snack. When Mister Scary ducks, he becomes immune to damage because he’s taking a nap. I appreciate that. Nothing scary can happen while you’re snoozing.

Mister Scary is $10 on Itch. You’ll need to plug the ROM into a NES emulator to become Mister Scary.

The only reason I still have Flash Player installed on my PC is so I can open N, which sits on my desktop, once in a while. I’ve been playing that classic freeware platformer for a long time, and now there’s a good reason for many people to revisit the third entry in the series.

As a thank you to the N++ community, Metanet Software is releasing a free update to mark the 10th anniversary of the game’s PS4 debut. TEN++ is said to include the developer’s “most challenging levels yet.” Given how darn tough these games are already, that’s saying something. The update is available now on Steam and it’s coming to the console versions of N++ soon.

The Cabin Factory is an anomaly-hunting (i.e. spot the difference) game in the style of The Exit 8. You’ll examine horror-themed cabins that are built for use in movies and theme parks to make sure they aren’t actually haunted. If you spot an anomaly, you’ll want to get out of the cabin post haste.

This $3 horror walking sim from International Cat Studios and publisher Future Friends Games debuted on Steam last year, and it just hit consoles in time for Halloween. It’s out now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.

    Upcoming

After CloverPit and Ball x Pit, I was planning to take a break from roguelikes/roguelites before diving into Hades 2. Alas, the latest game from the legendary Ron Gilbert now has a release date, and it’s very soon!

In Death by Scrolling, the aim is to collect enough gold to pay a ferryman so you can escape purgatory. However, there’s a wall of fire coming after you the whole time, so you’ll need to keep moving in order to try to stay alive. You’ll also need to avoid or stun an unkillable grim reaper as you collect gold and gems that unlock upgrades.

Death by Scrolling is from Gilbert’s Terrible Toybox and MicroProse Software. It’s coming to Steam on October 28.

There’s a lot going on in Silly Polly Beast. It’s safe to say this game is a shooter, but the release date trailer rapidly flits between perspectives and genres. There’s an emphasis on survival horror, along with puzzles and stealth segments. Polly will even sometimes remove the board that’s strapped to her back for some skateboarding sequences.

This is said to have a story that morphs and evolves as much as the gameplay does. After escaping her hellish orphanage, Polly lands right in the underworld and has to navigate her way out of that too.

Developer Andrei Chernyshov and publisher Top Hat Studios are behind Silly Polly Beast. It’s coming to Steam, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch on October 28.

Also coming to Steam on October 28 is a project from Autoscopia Interactive that’s designed to be played in a single sitting. As Long As You’re Here is a first-person game that places you in the role of a woman with Alzheimer’s disease. Her memories of the past, including her late brother, blend into the present as Annie settles into living with her family.

As Long As You’re Here started as a student project by Marlène Delrive, who was trying to better understand what her grandmother was experiencing in her final years. “The aim is to create a mature and nuanced experience that shows the difficult repercussions of losing not only your memory, but also your agency and sense of time and place,” the developers said.

Let’s close things out with a new trailer for Goodnight Universe. This is a cinematic adventure in which you play as a six-month-old baby. This particular infant is incredibly intelligent and has psychic powers. Isaac simply desires familial love and acceptance but (shock horror!) a tech company wants to take away the tot.

As with Nice Dreams’ last game (the stupendous Before Your Eyes), you control Goodnight Universe with your peepers via your device’s camera. It seems fascinating, and I really have to check out the Next Fest demo. Publisher Skybound Games is bringing it to Steam, Xbox Series X/S, PS5, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 on November 11.

  • Annapurna Interactive will reveal three new games in a showcase on September 23

Annapurna Interactive is hosting a games showcase on September 23, 2025 at 8PM ET / 5PM PT to show off three of its upcoming games. The publisher says the “Annapurna Interactive Direct from Tokyo” will stream on YouTube and feature new games from Kyoto-based developer Marumittu Games, Iridium Studios and Yarn Owl. Annapurna Interactive held its this past February to show off games like and .

Marumittu Games’ Annapurna project was initially when the publisher announced it was working with the studio. At the time, Marumittu said it was pulling from the work of journalist Rutger Bregman and Homo Deus author Yuval Noah Harari to make a game that’s “thinking about humanity in the future.” Developer Yarn Owl similarly , saying that it was inspired by The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Annapurna Interactive hasn’t formally announced its partnership with Iridium Studios, but the developer as “an unannounced RPG with an unannounced partner” on its website, which certainly sounds like it could be what Annapurna plans to show off at its showcase.

Despite what seems like a fairly normal past year of game releases, the future and long-term stability of Annapurna Interactive has been in question since the of the publisher’s staff in 2024. Since then, Annapurna Interactive has continued to announce and release games, while the publisher’s former staff to support in-development projects from Take-Two’s shuttered indie label, Private Division.

  • Hitman on iOS, martial arts survival and other new indie games worth checking out

Welcome to our latest recap of what’s going on in the indie game space. One very well-known indie found its way to iOS devices this week, though there are other new releases worth highlighting and plenty of other upcoming games to tell you about.

First, though, there was a (paywalled) story in Game File this week that caught my eye. It’s about how Google’s AI Overviews feature offers up false video game tips. That’s a problem the developers of a game called Trash Goblin — a cosy shopkeeping game in which you chip away at junk to unearth trinkets you can restore and sell — have been dealing with.

AI Overviews offered incorrect information about the game to some players, as well as the crew at Spilt Milk Studios when they tested the responses. For instance, AI Overviews suggested that a player could damage a trinket when they were removing debris from it, which is not true. It also in some cases delivered the correct information, but pointed the user to an incorrect source. In addition, AI Overviews offered information about another game entirely. This is obviously not ideal for players or the team behind Trash Goblin.

We’ve seen many cases in which AI Overviews get information blatantly wrong. Like other large language models (LLMs), it guesses what the next word or words should be in its responses based on its training data. LLMs are about generating sequences of text; they’re not designed to deliver facts (one reason why there’s a disclaimer on AI Overviews that reads “AI responses may include mistakes”). They often just make stuff up.

If you’re looking for help with a game, you’re far better off finding a community of players you can chat to. You might be able to find a clear, helpful guide to the game in question on an actual video game website, written by a professional video game guide writer. If, that is, you can evade AI Overviews to get to those websites in the first place (thankfully, it’s easy to turn off AI Overviews for your Google searches).

    New releases

IO Interactive is independent, which means Hitman World of Assassination fits within our remit here. This week, the bundle of three core Hitman games from the last decade arrived on iPhone (iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, as well as the iPhone 16 lineup) and iPad. Supported iPad models are iPad Pro and iPad Air (M1 chip or later), as well as the A17 Pro iPad mini.

Hitman World of Assassination is a sandbox stealth game in which you’re given a mission (usually taking out a target) and it’s up to you how to carry that out. Getting to know the layout of each level so you can plan your approach and escape is key. Understanding the route and actions of the NPCs will stand you in good stead too.

The iPhone and iPad versions have touch controls with context-sensitive buttons. You can, of course, opt to use a third-party controller instead. IOI says it tapped into Apple’s MetalFX tech to help ensure the iOS port looks good.

Hitman World of Assassination costs $70 on iOS. That’s fairly steep, but IOI says the game offers over 100 hours of gameplay. Alternatively, you can play the first location for free, and buy any of the 24 levels individually for $3 each.

In addition, the game is coming to Apple Silicon Macs later this year. IOI will also bring the roguelite Freelancer mode to the iPhone and iPad versions down the line with a free update.

Another game landed on new platforms this week as Alawar’s Karate Survivor hit PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch for $6. As the title suggests, this is a survivor-style martial arts beat-’em-up.

You’ll be able to use the environment to your advantage by picking up items to use as melee or projectile weapons, kicking objects toward goons and swinging locker and microwave doors into bad guys’ mushes. You can unlock hundreds of different moves and there are permanent upgrades as well.

First-person action-adventure Davy x Jones has set sail in early access on Steam. Until September 4, you can snap it up for $6.66. After that time, it will cost $10. However, the price will increase ahead of the game’s full release on PC and consoles, which is slated for late 2026.

In this early version, you’ll have access to the main gameplay and combat systems (including legendary weapons), several islands, an array of enemies and some cinematic executions — hopefully involving a kraken. You’ll take command of a half-ship, half-whale vessel called Abby as you attempt to escape the underworld and seek revenge as the legendary pirate.

Regular readers of this roundup will know that I’m a sucker for a game with a great title. Prop Haunt, which riffs on the prop hunt modes in many other games, is definitely one of those (as is another one I’ll mention later on).

This is a spooky 1 vs. 4 multiplayer horror title from Silent Forest Games that just hit Steam early access for $15. The ghost players possess objects and it’s up to the investigator to find and stop them. The ghosties can teleport, blend into their surroundings and so on, while the investigator has cameras and other gizmos at their disposal

Currently, there are four playable ghosts with different haunting styles, two maps and support for public and private lobbies. More maps, ghost powers, investigator tools and procedural prop generation are in the works.

    Upcoming

Bye Sweet Carole had flown below my radar until the release date trailer popped up but, goodness, does it look gorgeous. The team at Little Sewing Machine took a hand-drawn approach to the art of this narrative-horror game, which mimics the look of classic animated films. Even the song in the trailer aligns with the type of showtune you’d hear in Disney movies.

You’ll take on the role of Lana Benton, a young girl who sets out to find out the truth about her best friend Carole’s disappearance from an orphanage. It sounds (and looks!) pretty promising. Publisher Maximum Entertainment is bringing Bye Sweet Carole to PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S and PC on October 9.

Rita is an interesting-looking puzzle game from SporkTank (aka solo developer Martin Stradling). You play as a chick that uses letters found in the environment to solve word puzzles, including crosswords, in order to progress. For instance, you might need to fill in a crossword answer for “stairs” in order to spawn a staircase (perhaps there’s a bit of a Baba is You influence here?). There are some platforming elements too.

You’ll follow Rita throughout her journey from exploring as a young chick to becoming a grandparent. It all seems quite lovely. Rita is coming to Steam early next year. A demo will be available on September 18.

Co-op survival game Lost Skies is set to exit Steam early access on September 17. Set on an archipelago of sky islands, you can explore this world with up to five buddies and try to learn exactly what led to this fractured civilization. You have a grappling hook, wingsuits and gliders to help you traverse these landforms and a customizable and upgradeable skyship that you’ll use for both transportation and combat. Players can also create their own islands, which they can share with the community.

I never got around to checking out the demo for Lost Skies, even though I’ve had it installed on my PC for months. Still, this one from Bossa Studios and publisher Humble Games has me intrigued enough to perhaps try out the full game.

Another game I’ve had my eye on for a hot minute is Bloodthief, which will debut on Steam on September 22. This is a Ghostrunner-inspired medieval parkour-slasher game from first-time game creator Blargis (Jake Bedard), who has been sharing development updates on YouTube over the last couple of years.

In Bloodthief, you play as an agile vampire and use the blood of your enemies to enhance your speed, abilities and survival. For example, attacks help boost your momentum. I’m definitely looking forward to watching some speedruns of this because I’m fairly sure that, as with the Ghostrunner games, I’m going to be absolutely terrible at this.

While you’re waiting (im)patiently for the full release of Hades 2, you might like to check out a similar flavor of isometric roguelite action — albeit with the addition of co-op. In Sworn, you’ll set out to save Camelot from a corrupted Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table with the help of up to three other players.

Sworn has been in early access since last year, and you won’t have to wait much longer for the full game. It’ll be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and Steam on September 25.

Let’s wrap things up for this week with another game that has a fantastic title. The Hero is too Powerful so let’s Pleeeease Settle this Peacefully! is the latest project from Night Stroll Studio (solo developer Trevor Thompson). It’s an RPG in the vein of early Zelda games in which you play as a hero who has exactly one attack.

However, you can level up this attack to the point that it’s obscenely powerful. There’s also the option of talking your way out of sticky situations. This comedy adventure, which has maybe my favorite title of any game this side of I’m Going to Die if I Don’t Eat Sushi!, is slated to hit Steam later this year.

Having adored Hades on Steam, Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series X since launch, I’m looking forward to playing and reviewing it on iOS through Netflix. Netflix’s announcement mentions 60fps performance, redesigned menus and interfaces, fully customizable controls, cloud saves, achievements, and offline play support. I hope the team can potentially add a higher frame rate cap if it is feasible for modern iOS devices. If you’d like to grab Hades on iOS, it is in soft launch in the Philippines, but you should be able to pre-order it on the App Store for iOS here. Check out our forum thread for it here. Hades is a stunner on the Steam Deck OLED, and I look forward to seeing how it feels on iOS this month. Have you played Hades on console or PC so far, and will you be trying it out on Netflix when it launches on March 19th worldwide?

  • Adorable Kitty-Collector Sequel ‘Neko Atsume 2’ Announced, Coming to iOS and Android this Summer – TouchArcade

Adorable Kitty-Collector Sequel ‘Neko Atsume 2’ Announced, Coming to iOS and Android this Summer – TouchArcade

Ya’ll. This October will mark the ten-year anniversary of Hit Point launching Neko Atsume, the adorable kitty collecting sim that has become a runaway success and essentially created a sub-genre of cozy pet-collecting life sim games. Sure, the English version didn’t arrive until about a year later, but still, where does the time go? Anyway, a decade is a long time to keep a mobile game running, especially when it’s a game that the developer likely didn’t expect to take off the way it did and didn’t anticipate having to maintain for years and years to come. Because of this, and in celebration of the game’s 10th anniversary, Hit-Point has announced that a sequel is in the works and set to release this summer. The sequel is called… Neko Atsume 2! Who could have seen that coming?

It’s not clear if the summer release window also includes places outside of Japan, but given how popular the series is now I’d kind of think they’d want to release globally, but that’s just my guess. There’s also some information on the newly-launched Neko Atsume portal website regarding the existing game. They mention that they will continue updating the original game to the best of their ability but that their focus will be on the sequel, as it sounds like this new game will be designed from the ground up with frequent content updates and long-term support in mind. I look forward to seeing how my kitty-collecting virtual life will be enhanced when Neko Atsume 2 launches later this year. Please look forward to it too.

  • ‘Zenless Zone Zero’ New Gameplay Trailer Showcased at State of Play, in Development for PS5 As Well as Mobile and PC – TouchArcade

‘Zenless Zone Zero’ New Gameplay Trailer Showcased at State of Play, in Development for PS5 As Well as Mobile and PC – TouchArcade

Earlier today during Sony’s new State of Play showcase that had a few games I will be pre-ordering soon, HoYoverse showcased a new gameplay trailer for its upcoming urban fantasy action RPG Zenless Zone Zero. If you’ve not kept up with Zenless Zone Zero recently, it was confirmed for release in 2024 on iOS, Android, and PC but also confirmed for unannounced consoles. The new State of Play trailer for Zenless Zone Zero confirmed that it is in development for PS5 as well. A release window was not given, but I hope it does launch alongside the mobile and PC versions. Watch the newest Zenless Zone Zero gameplay trailer below:

I assume Zenless Zone Zero will make use of the PS5 DualSense controller haptics and adaptive triggers as Genshin Impact does. Either way, I’ll be playing Zenless Zone Zero on iPhone 15 Pro, iPad Pro, and PS5 whenever it releases on those platforms. It is going to be interesting to see if this one and maybe even Honkai Star Rail come to the Nintendo Switch successor whenever that launches. Check out more about the game on the official website here. I’ve enjoyed the second closed beta on iPhone 15 Pro quite a bit, and will be trying out upcoming betas if they do any in the future. What do you think of Zenless Zone Zero so far and will you play it on mobile, PC, or PS5?

  • ‘Death Stranding Director’s Cut’ on iOS and macOS Will Share the Same Server As the Steam Version, Kojima Productions Confirms – TouchArcade

‘Death Stranding Director’s Cut’ on iOS and macOS Will Share the Same Server As the Steam Version, Kojima Productions Confirms – TouchArcade

Death Stranding Director’s Cut () launches beginning January 30th worldwide on iPhone 15 Pro, iPad (M1 and later), and macOS (M1 and later). Leading up to the game’s new Apple platform launch, Kojima Productions and 505 Games have been revealing more about the upcoming port. Over the weekend, the team revealed that Death Stranding Director’s Cut on iOS and Mac will share the same server as the Steam and Epic versions of the game. This means the in-game Strand system for sharing content, sending likes, and more will now see Apple hardware added to the equation. The Steam version of the game has always been quite popular, so this is good news for newcomers playing on iOS and Mac with a game world already likely full of things to discover with hints, structures, and more left by other players.

Death Stranding Director’s Cut is also getting a limited edition Backbone One USB-C 2nd Gen controller with its own look. This is going up for pre-order tomorrow. The Apple platform launch of Death Stranding Director’s Cut from Kojima Productions launches for iPhone 15 Pro, iPad (M1 and later), and macOS (M1 and later) on January 30th for $39.99 with a pre-order discount bringing it down to $19.99. Stay tuned for my review of the game covering the iPhone 15 Pro version. Have you played Death Stranding Director’s Cut before and will you be checking it out on iOS and Mac this week?

  • Words in Progress and BEAST Bio Exo Arena Suit Team Release on February 1st – TouchArcade

Words in Progress and BEAST Bio Exo Arena Suit Team Release on February 1st – TouchArcade

Following today’s release of three games on Apple Arcade, Apple has revealed the (seemingly) two games coming to the service next month on February 1st, 2024. The games are the unique 3v3 online action game featuring animal heroes piloting powerful mechanized armors in BEAST: Bio Exo Arena Suit Team and new word puzzler Words in Progress. Both of them arrive on the same day, and Apple has also confirmed that many games will be updated leading into next month. Check out some gameplay of the 3v3 online action game BEAST: Bio Exo Arena Suit Team below:

While not really my favorite genre, I’ll give BEAST: Bio Exo Arena Suit Team a shot when it launches. I’m more interested in Words in Progress to see how another developer tries to do something interesting with word games. The puzzler includes asynchronous multiplayer, multiple language support, an endless mode, and more when it launches. Apple has also announced updates for Crayola Create and Play+ coming January 12th, Jetpack Joyride 2 getting the Hamster Ball Vehicle, and other content updates planned for Cut the Rope 3, Snake.io+, Puzzle & Dragons Story, Cityscapes: Sim Builder, stitch., WHAT THE CAR?, Samba de Amigo: Party-To-Go, and more coming.

You can sign up here for Beast Bio Exo Arena Suit Team and here for Words in Progress to be notified of when they are available to download or to have them downloaded when available depending on your setting. I hope we see more games added each month because this seems a bit less than expected. What do you think of today’s releases and the February 2024 announcement?

I’ll update this with our new forum threads when they go up.
