The Director of Good Boy on Creating Horror From a Dog’s Point of View

    By Cheryl Eddy

Most dog owners can recall at least one instance where their pup has reacted to a seemingly invisible presence. Are they picking up a sound pitched higher than our hearing? Sniffing out the memory of a dropped piece of food? Or perhaps… using their canine super-senses to detect something supernatural?

Good Boy, the feature debut of director and co-writer Ben Leonberg, takes that idea and runs with it, following Indy (played by Leonberg’s own dog) and his owner, Todd (Shane Jensen), as they move into the former home of Todd’s late grandfather. It’s a gloomy, dark, isolated place, and—as Indy soon realizes—it appears to be teeming with unquiet spirits. [Read more]

The Superman We Need Right Now: A Report From the Set of James Gunn’s New DC Film

    By Germain Lussier

When Superman started kissing the football on a stick, it all clicked together. The day was June 24, 2024, and io9 was in Cleveland to watch the filming of James Gunn’s Superman. At the end of a giant battle over the streets of Metropolis, the Man of Steel knelt down to kiss and profess his love to an inanimate object that special effects would later transform into his dog, Krypto. That little dash of heartfelt weirdness, in the middle of a massive action scene, did a near-perfect job of showing what the film’s cast and crew had been trying to articulate all day: this is not just a unique, new Superman, it’s James Gunn’s Superman. In Sinners, Honesty Leads to Freedom

    By Justin Carter

Sinners is the type of movie where nearly every scene could be considered a standout moment on a technical, writing, or performance level. For me, there’s two moments—one utterly sincere and raunchy, the other delightfully meta—that speak to one of the film’s core themes.

In the first, burgeoning blues guitarist Sammie (Miles Caton) is getting intimate with singer Pealine (Jayme Lawson) and proceeds to get on his knees. He’s about to employ the advice his older cousin Stack (Michael B. Jordan) gave to him about pleasuring a woman earlier in the film, and just as Pearline’s about to politely decline, Sammie looks up at her and says: “You’re beautiful, and I want to taste it.” He’s clearly taken with her, and says this with the earnestness of someone who believes in what he’s saying. What’s the Story Behind Tron: Ares? Our Report From the Set

    By Germain Lussier

“I have to ride a lightcycle.” That was my first thought last year when the invite arrived to visit the set of Disney’s new sequel, Tron: Ares. It seemed like a logical request. When you think of Tron, you think of lightcycles. They’re a huge part of both 2010’s Tron: Legacy and 1982’s Tron. And yet, I had to wonder, were there even lightcycles in this movie? What exactly WAS this movie? Coming out 15 years after the last one, with basically a whole new cast, it seemed any concept of what the film could or would be was entirely up in the air. I had questions. I wanted answers. And, perhaps, a ride on that lightcycle. [Read more]

I Love the Moment That Everything Changes in Gundam GQuuuuuuX

    By James Whitbrook

The latest entry in the Gundam franchise, GQuuuuuuX, is built around one of the most fascinating premises a mainline Gundam show has had in years. To get there, we’re asked to cast our minds back over 45 years to the original 1979 anime—and in doing so, we’re also asked to consider a pretty hilarious idea.

The vast majority of Gundam GQuuuuuuX—as covered in its prequel/compilation movie GQuuuuuuX Beginning, out in American theaters today for a limited run—is predicated around the fact that the show is in fact set in an alternate version of Gundam‘s “Universal Century” timeline. The primary timeline of the original Gundam and its direct successor series, among others in the franchise, GQuuuuuuX‘s version of events asks us to consider another outcome. What if the antagonistic forces of the original series, the secessionist space colony Zeon, actually managed to win the war against Earth? [Read more]

7 Reasons Why The Nightmare Before Christmas Is Not a Halloween Movie, 4 Reasons Why It Is

    By Sabina Graves

Every year, it seems that Halloween creeps in earlier than before, and with it, its Pumpkin King, Jack Skellington.

Take the Haunted Mansion Holiday at Disneyland; it’s a haunted house with ghosts that, as soon as Halloweentime arrives at the Disneyland resort at the end of summer, becomes inhabited by Jack and the people of Halloweentown. However, they’re not there for Halloween; they’re there to make Christmas. There’s the rub, because the once cult and now very mainstream holiday staple from the mind of Tim Burton and director Henry Selick is about one holiday taking over another. [Read more]

Bryan Fuller Reveals the Inspirations for His Dark Fairytale Feature Debut

    By Sabina Graves

He’s best known for his acclaimed genre TV shows, but Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Pushing Daisies) is making his feature film directorial debut with Dust Bunny, a coming-of-age storybook fantasy with his signature twist.

The film reunites the Hannibal series creator with star Mads Mikkelsen. He plays a hitman hired by a young girl named Aurora (Sophie Sloan), who wants his help to hunt the mysterious and monstrous Dust Bunny tormenting her apartment.

In a recent conversation with io9, Fuller talked about how the feature got the big screen treatment after previously being pitched as an episode of the Steven Spielberg-produced Amazing Stories series for Apple TV, and what it was like working on it with genre great Sigourney Weaver. The cult-fave creative mind also opened up about how he feels in regards to some of the projects he’s been attached to that have fallen through—as well as his excitement for a project yet to be announced. And yes, we even got a few details about his potential Silence of the Lambs limited series. [Read more]

Birds of Prey Deserved Its Full, Chaotic 15 Minutes of Fame

    By Justin Carter

It always sucks when something that’s pretty good and was clearly well made just doesn’t hit the way it seems like it should’ve. This is particularly true when it comes to movies; think of a film you saw that was surprisingly enjoyable and how it didn’t really get a fair shake for whatever reason.

Plenty of examples come to mind for me, but one of the first is Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey. Originally released on February 7, 2020, under its initial (and funnier) title, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), the film’s a bit of a tangled knot. You may remember it first seemed like a solo vehicle for Margot Robbie’s Harley post-Suicide Squad 2016, then somewhere along the line, it also may have become something for the popular, usually women-starring B-list superhero team, and then ended up being… kind of both? Castlevania: Nocturne Writers Talk Religion, Revolution, and Black Representation

    By Isaiah Colbert

Castlevania: Nocturne returns with its second season on Netflix, sparking online discussions about video game references, animation enthusiasts sharing their favorite action clips, and Alucard babygirl posts in its wake. However, a new season also brings the resurgence of pearl-clutching and Gamergate-adjacent rhetoric concerning Black representation, which should be celebrated in the Powerhouse Animation series instead.

To address and preempt criticisms from those who deride the inclusion of Black characters in the video game series as “woke,” we talked to Black Castlevania: Nocturne writers Testament and Zodwa Nyoni, and executive producer Clive Bradley, about how they enriched Konami’s fantastical source material setting with real-world events and the Black experience. How Fionna and Cake Reflects the Legacy of Adventure Time

    By Sabina Graves

Season two of Fionna and Cake has arrived on HBO Max, taking Adventure Time fans into a new world—and it’s one that’s finally established as its own universe, thanks to Prismo breaking the rules and making the Ice King’s fan fiction real.

The first season’s ending metatextually had Fionna and friends fight to make their world canon, and there’s now more to explore in its earned existence and how it might cross over into Adventure Time‘s Land of Ooo.

But don’t get the premise twisted, Fionna and Cake isn’t just fan service to sneak back into Adventure Time territory completely. In a conversation io9 had with producer Adam Muto, we discussed how the creative teams aim to make their beloved character variants stand on their own and, yes, sometimes stand with the legacy faces to take on new interdimensional threats. A Love Letter to Cobra Kai, One of the Greatest Sequels Ever

    By Germain Lussier

When I first watched Cobra Kai, I stopped it five minutes in. This is a true story. I started the first episode and was so absolutely blown away by what I was seeing, I almost didn’t believe it was real. Since I was about five years old, I’d been a massive fan of The Karate Kid franchise, and here I was in my 30s watching the same actors from those movies tell this dynamic, awesome, follow-up story. There was no way this show was this good. It was impossible. [Read more]

Tony Gilroy Looks Back on Taking Shit Seriously in Andor

    By James Whitbrook

Tony Gilroy is a man with a vision. That vision guided him from the extensive reshoots of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story all the way to a Disney+ series about one of that film’s heroes, Cassian Andor—and finding in it a critical acclaim unlike anything the galaxy far, far away had seen in a generation.

He’s also a very frank man who knows when that vision can potentially turn on a dime—as it did one day while filming the series in Scotland, when the writer, director, and showrunner realized that his grand plan for Andor wasn’t going to work. [Read more]

Andor‘s Tony Gilroy and Genevieve O’Reilly Break Down Mon Mothma’s Pivotal Dance

    By Sabina Graves

During io9’s interview with showrunner Tony Gilroy and star Genevieve O’Reilly, who plays Mon Mothma, the duo broke down the last moments of the third episode of this week’s drop. Gilroy also discussed how framing these pivotal years as three-episode mini-movies came about. [Read more]

Andor‘s Finest Hours Just Delivered a Huge Gut Punch

    By Sabina Graves

What it takes to sustain a rebellion is brought into question in this week’s episode arc of Andor, which covers what happens two years before the main events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the original Star Wars saga. Thematically it’s time for the rebels to figure out if they want to just fight or actually win, as tensions come to a head on Ghorman in what’s probably the most gut-wrenching watch of the series, and perhaps even Star Wars as a whole. Who Was Syril Karn?

    By James Whitbrook

“Who are you?” is the question that haunts Syril Karn for his entire life. From the moment we met him, prim and proper security uniform modified to be just so, a sense of purpose in a vast and uncaring universe has been at the core of understanding what makes Syril tick. The journey that took him across the galaxy reached a climactic moment in Andor‘s penultimate arc this week, and raised that haunting question once more. But the answer is more complicated than mere villain in Andor‘s narrative, doubting or otherwise. Because even as the hero of his own story, the man we know Syril to be, until the very end, is shaped less by himself and more by the systems and structures that made a tool of him. [Read more]

They Just Gave Kleya a Goddamn Gun

    By James Whitbrook

There’s a scene in the ninth episode of Andor‘s second season where Vel Sartha, inspecting a table full of requisitioned weaponry at the Rebellion’s Yavin base, picks up a blaster and asks whose it is. Except, that’s not what she asks, raising the pistol into the air in front of a crowd of new recruits. What she actually says is “Who belongs to this?”

I was thinking a lot about that line an episode later, when, as she infiltrates a hospital in a desperate attempt to end the life of the man who saved hers as a child, Kleya Marki, one of Andor‘s standout characters, slips a tiny blaster with one hell of a kick out of her purloined nurse’s scrubs and calmly executes an ISB tactical officer. And then does it again. And again. It’s the climactic, tense moment of an episode that builds up to this singular moment of emotional and dramatic release as she tearfully turns off Luthen’s life support. In many ways, Kleya’s whole life, one torn apart by the Empire, and rebuilt out of her hatred of it, is leading to this moment, and this moment of infiltration and execution is just the final flourish. Vinland Saga Creator Makoto Yukimura Looks Back on Writing His Pacifist Viking Epic

    By Isaiah Colbert

Anime and, by proxy, manga are typically viewed through a lens where violence begets violence, and the only hero is one with attention-grabbing hairdos, the ability to power up, and the capacity to punch things even more brilliantly. Very rarely is the traditional hero’s journey, whether in shonen or its older brother genre, seinen, predicated on having its hero question the nature of violence as a catch-all solution, rather than a spoke that keeps the cycle spinning. Then again, not every manga series challenges that notion so brilliantly as Vinland Saga. [Read more]

Revolutionary Girl Utena Is as Lynchian as Shojo Anime Has Ever Been

    By Isaiah Colbert

Over the years, critics and everyday people have come to identify media as “Lynchian,” in reverence for how video games, movies, and TV shows evoke the dream-like quality of the late auteur David Lynch. Although most media described as Lynchian takes its inspiration from seminal works like Twin Peaks through referential nods, no show completely embodies the ephemeral vibe of Lynch’s opaque-yet-piercing style of storytelling quite like the similarly influential shojo anime series Revolutionary Girl Utena. Deep Space Nine Understood the Fantasy of Spies—and Their Reality

    By James Whitbrook

In just under a week, the next Star Trek project arrives in the form of Section 31, a streaming movie starring Michelle Yeoh diving into the titular black ops organization—one that, at least in all the footage we’ve seen so far, puts an emphasis on the glitz and glam of secret agent work. There’s action, there’s dazzling costumes, there’s even, perhaps most surprisingly in the context of it all, direct Federation oversight, like a co-worker with a stick up their ass who’s here to stop you from having fun. The Leftovers Is Still One of TV’s Great Miracles

    By Cheryl Eddy

Losing a loved one brings pain no matter the circumstances. Not knowing what happened to them only adds more agony. That grief and confusion is what propels The Leftovers, but on a global scale—leading to three fascinating, thought-provoking, audacious, cigarette-filled, and often miraculous seasons of TV.

At the start of the first episode, it happens: two percent of the world’s population vanishes into thin air. The amount of missing isn’t huge, but it’s significant. The people who lost someone dear are personally wounded, but nobody escapes being touched in some way by the event, which leaves humanity with an infuriating array of mystical questions. Why did those who left get “chosen”—and why were those who didn’t go get left behind? Was God or some other cosmic being involved? Where did they go? Will they ever come back? And will it happen again? [Read more]

The 6 Biggest Moments in the Shocking Foundation Season 3 Finale

    By Cheryl Eddy

Foundation season three has come to an end, but it still feels like there’s so much story left to tell. Thank goodness Apple TV+ confirmed just yesterday that season four is on the way! But before we ponder what’s next, we must discuss the season finale.

Stranger Things Lets It Rip to Kick Off Its Final Season

    By Sabina Graves

The conclusion to Netflix and the Duffer Brothers’ pop culture phenomenon Stranger Things begins with an epic first volume that’s now streaming for your binging pleasure.

Action and horror propel the return to Hawkins in volume one as our heroes race to find Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), hoping to vanquish him once and for all. In the time since the Upside Down ripped open in season four, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) has been training with Hopper (David Harbour) to strengthen her powers. Seeing Eleven’s growth into a strong as hell young woman from her early days throwing bullies off her friends is such a joy. Clearly, that’s thanks to Eggo waffles. [Read more]

Why Gainax’s Gunbuster Pose Is More Than Anime Rule of Cool Reference Fodder

    By Isaiah Colbert

Anime of the late ’80s has an undeniable impact that extends beyond the medium into movies, TV shows, and video games. Many of the homages are to 1988’s Akira, which existed before Western culture had a grasp of what anime really was or could be. The “Akira slide”—an iconic shot of Kaneda sliding sideways on his bike in the 1988 movie adaptation of Akira—has become an icon of anime culture, referenced over and over in numerous cartoons and films, western and Japanese, ever since, including Jordan Peele’s Nope, Tron: Ares, and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, amid an ocean of other Akira nods.

While Akira references are rife in new media like Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic, letting fans know that the creators are aware of its rule of cool, it’s hard not to feel a bit like the buck stopped at aping aesthetics for easy internet referential brownie points over carrying over its core narrative themes. Although most pop culture nods (Scavengers Reign aside) borrow Akira‘s surface style without echoing its thematic depth, every homage to fellow 1988 anime film Gunbuster‘s iconic arm-cross pose endures as a timeless gesture of steeled resolve wrapped in a badass stance. Meet Freddy Fazbear and Friends at Halloween Horror Nights’ Five Nights at Freddy’s House

Take a look inside the Five Nights at Freddy’s house at Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights. It looks like a real Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza location right out of the mind of game creator Scott Cawthon and Emma Tammi’s cinematic adaptation.

io9 was invited to a behind-the-scenes walkthrough of the Hollywood attraction based on the video game and Blumhouse film franchise, opening at HHN ahead of December’s Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. How Science Fiction Became the Key to This Year’s Most Buzzed About Concert

    By Germain Lussier

2001: A Space Odyssey. Star Wars. Star Trek. Tron. Blade Runner. Akira. The Fifth Element. Interstellar. Superman. Flash Gordon. The Matrix. That sounds like a list of the greatest sci-fi films of all time, but actually, it’s a list of the films mentioned during a discussion about the inspirations behind the Backstreet Boys’ popular new residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This past July, one of the biggest boy bands of all time celebrated 20 years of their iconic album, Millennium, at the technologically advanced venue, with two months of sold-out shows that generated a ton of buzz and interest. As a result, two more months of shows were recently added, and io9 spoke to Baz Halpin, CEO and founder of Silent House, about it. [Read more]

KPop Demon Hunters and Expedition 33 Are Having a Moment

    By Justin Carter

Have you watched KPop Demon Hunters on Netflix or played Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?

Chances are the answer is “yes,” and if not, you’ve certainly heard of them: both were released earlier this year to fairly glowing reviews (if not outright critical acclaim) and performed very well commercially. The latter, a turn-based RPG from newcomer Sandfall Interactive, will likely pick up some awards at year’s end, while Netflix is planning to go all in on KPop. Along with talks of sequels and an ever-growing wave of merchandise, the streamer submitted the mid-movie song “Golden” for Academy Award consideration. Both may also wind up jumping to live-action; Expedition had a movie announced months before the game’s release, while Netflix is reportedly mulling over a remake with human actors. [Read more]

Epic Universe’s Monster Lore Gives Us the Best Possible Dark Universe

    By Sabina Graves

When you visit Epic Universe’s Dark Universe, you get hints of a story that’s so mysterious you’ll want to keep coming back to learn more. In Darkmoor Village, where monsters and humans co-exist—barely—the relationship between the villagers, the mad scientist in her castle with her monsters, and the vampires below is a very fragile menagerie of the macabre.

When io9 visited Darkmoor during Epic Universe’s opening week, we couldn’t help but wonder if the dense canon introduced would offer some insight into Universal’s abandoned Dark Universe film franchise. It turns out that some elements in the attractions, details in the land offerings, and immersive interactions echo what was once supposed to herald an Avengers-like assembly of the Universal Monsters on the big screen. Death Stranding 2 Is Hideo Kojima’s Most Refined and Relentless Vision Yet

    By Isaiah Colbert

When Hideo Kojima—the man fashioned into a video game auteur out of his work on Metal Gear Solid—launched his debut title under the newly formed Kojima Productions in 2019, Death Stranding arrived shrouded in mystery and hype. Every Death Stranding trailer was full of cryptic imagery and spectral apparitions, and its stacked cast featuring Norman Reedus, Léa Seydoux, and Mads Mikkelsen set expectations sky-high. It was also the first title to come from the creator following a messy and public exodus from Konami. Would Kojima once again rewrite the rules of game design?

Upon release, Death Stranding didn’t disappoint so much as it defied prediction. At its core, it was an immersive, slow-burning post-apocalyptic courier simulator. Players took control of Sam Porter Bridges, a pulp comics-esque naming convention of a protagonist suffering from aphenphosmphobia, an extreme fear of being touched, tasked with completing a herculean cross country trek across haunted landscapes by plagued eldritch horrors with the help of a baby in a container on his chest—avoiding environmental hazards and balancing parcels on every available piece of real estate on his body to “reconnect America.” Reductively, Death Stranding is regarded in gaming circles as a “triple-A” indie game, with a weird (but not overly confusingly dense) world-building serving as the connective tissue propelling every careful footstep on Sam’s odyssey. What Death Stranding lacks in conventional thrills, it made up for with sheer conceptual weight. [Read more]

Walt Disney Returns as a Surreal Animatronic for Disneyland’s 70th Anniversary

As of this week, Walt Disney returns to his original Magic Kingdom, with a little help from the magic-makers at Imagineering.

Through the audio-animatronics technology Walt Disney introduced when he opened Disneyland 70 years ago, the evolution of the show robots has gone from static positioning with some movements, as first seen on the singing birds in the Enchanted Tiki Room, to a roaming animatronic of Uncle Walt. Stationed in the Main Street Opera House, the (m)animatronic is the crown jewel of the Walt Disney – A Magical Life show, where he, along with the help of Disney CEO Bob Iger as the program’s narrator, gets to sit and stand front and center to share his story in his words. The Best Disney Park Ride Overlays, and Where to Find Them

Seasonal and promotional ride overlays are now ways to draw in more people to revisit beloved attractions at Disney’s parks or give passholders a reason to come back over and over. Over time some have had more longevity than others, as the most popular overlay continues to be Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion Holiday, which has Jack Skellington and friends take over the West Coast haunt with his spooky Christmas shenanigans. Meanwhile, the haunted version of Space Mountain: Ghost Galaxy seems to have exorcised its spirit—it just might have been a tad too scary, while Star Wars: Hyperspace Mountain stays beating out the rest. Being a Manga Letterer Is More Than Having a Fun Job

    By Isaiah Colbert

When people read manga, they often focus on the Instagram caption-worthy one-liners and larger-than-life illustrations that fill their pages. What usually goes unnoticed in picking up a manga is the work that goes into its lettering and graphic design, done by the folks who pour their craftsmanship into typesetting popular Japanese manga for Western audiences.

We spoke with professional letterers Brandon Bovia (The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All, Dragon Ball Super, Kaiju No. 8), Evan Hayden (Battle Angel Alita, Land of Lustrous, Akira), Sara Linsley (Kamudo), Aidan Clarke (Otaku Elf, Neo Faust, Les Miserable), Barri Shrager (Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?), Kyla Aiko (Dandadan, Gokurakugai, RuriDragon), and Finn K. Every Halloween, theme parks offer tasty tricks and treats for grown-ups, from slasher-themed Five Nights at Freddy’s slices at Halloween Horror Nights to haunted rum-based cocktails inspired by Pirates of the Caribbean. As a theme park insider, there has been so much I’ve enjoyed on my own trips throughout this Halloween season at Disneyland, Knott’s Scary Farm, and Halloween Horror Nights, even after trying some of them at food reveals and media events at Universal Studios Resorts, Disney Parks, and Six Flags.

So far 2025 is a really good year for tasty, sometimes terrifying eats. Read on for the best spooky season foodie finds of Halloween 2025 around your favorite theme parks!

Five Nights at Freddy’s Cupcake – Halloween Horror Nights Orlando

Chica’s cupcake companion from the Five Nights at Freddy’s universe gets a tasty variant at Halloween Horror Nights Orlando. It tops the version at HHN Hollywood, as the East Coast dessert comes filled with delicious cannoli filling at the core and a raspberry dollop within the pink cream top. The tasty flavor combo makes you feel like it would be the kind of fun menu item at a real Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza you’d expect for a birthday surprise—along with the animatronic band coming to life.

Five Nights at Freddy’s “Why Not Have Both Pizza & Pasta” – Halloween Horror Nights Orlando

While Horror Nights Hollywood opted to just put an ordinary personal-size pizza in a Freddy Fazbear box, the food team in Orlando got a bit more creative. At first, I thought there was no way pasta on pizza would work, but after screaming through a few houses and needing a carb refuel, it really hit the spot. The cheese holding the thin spaghetti along with meatballs is a dementedly delicious delight on a slice. From a FNAF fan standpoint, I can also see Afton putting this on the menu to slow down any potential victims, so it’s grim yet satisfying.

Terrifier “Starry Night Spritz” Cocktail – Halloween Horror Nights Orlando

The Terrifier “Starry Night Spritz” at Horror Nights Orlando’s Clown Cafe is a tart gin-based drink that evokes the works of Art the Clown and is way better than, say, the West Coast’s charcoal black concoction that looks like him. The blood-red cranberry and bubbly prosecco really make it easy and refreshing to drink in between houses, plus I loved the Clown Cafe photo ops where the drink is available. Pro-tip: you might run into Santa Art here.

Terrifier “Sunflower Glasses” Cookie – Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood

This cookie is a playful callback to Art the Clown living his best life before taking a life at a costume shop in Terrifier 2. The sunflower shape is held by a fruity mousse that is tart like Art! It tastes great and is not the kind of sculpted treat that you’d toss after taking an Instagram snap and a single bite. The lemon flavor provides a great balance for a cookie that’s not overly sweet and is tasty as a snack on its own.

Jason Universe “Camp Creamy Gouda Fondue” – Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood

The snacks at Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood are absolutely redeemed by this inspired snack straight out of Camp Crystal Lake. The Jason Universe booth’s best-kept secret is a sourdough bowl filled with warm gouda dip that’s infused with Angry Orchard apple cider. It works so well and comes with a side of sliced apples that are a crisp dipping addition (alongside the demolishable bread)—and so you can tell yourself you’re being somewhat healthy. If this was my last meal before getting got by Jason, it would be so worthwhile. I want to go back to Horror Nights Hollywood just for more of this before the season is over; it’s that good.

    “Ursula’s Enchanted Waffles” – Disney’s California Adventure

    Mickey Waffles
    ©io9/Gizmodo

The best hidden gems at the Disneyland resort right now are the seasonal themed waffles at Schmoozies, the milkshake window at Disney California Adventure. The walk-up quick service stop is one of the few places you can order the classic Mickey-shaped waffles past breakfast. If you’re an all-day breakfast fan, you’ll be excited to know it’s been theming the waffles to the parks’ seasonal events. For the 70th Anniversary, it had a birthday cake and sprinkles flavor, for example. For Halloween, though, the theming went all out in a very special way with Ursula’s Enchanted Waffles. Inspired by the Disney villain, the flavor profiles evoke the sea witch’s colors of purple through an ube custard filling and black with a dark chocolate waffle exterior. It’s my favorite waffle yet, with a perfect balance of sweet and dark! I would sign my voice away to her to keep this on the menu.

“Darth by Chocolate Parfait” – Disneyland

The Galactic Grill’s iconic dessert parfait returns to Tomorrowland at Disneyland. It’s layers of silky smooth and sinfully rich chocolate on chocolate that I can’t get enough of. I promise it’s not overkill; the pudding on the red velvet with chocolate cake and Oreo crumbles differentiates the kinds of chocolates you get all the way down for a tasty variety. It’s not too on the dark side, thankfully, and it’s still the best of all the Star Wars parfaits it has done.

Indiana Jones and Halloween Drinks at Jock Lindsay’s Hangar Bar – Walt Disney World

The Disney Springs watering hole inspired by Indiana Jones’ trusty pilot is pouring out spooky spirits this season at Jock Lindsay’s “Halloween Bar.” Three of the offerings hit the mark, evoking the mystical and deadly energy of our daring archeology professor’s side hustle adventures. As pictured above from right to left, if the “Scarab Beetle Essence” is a sweet, colorful, pineapple- and rum-forward poison, then I’d say the color-changing, ginger- and gin-strong “Cauldron Cooler” is the perfect antidote. The variety of flavors really works here, as they exotically capture flavors you’d expect to find travelling the world with Indiana Jones.  However, it’s the “Spike Trap” that comically nods to the traps from the Lucasfilm franchise, complete with a spiked ghostie marshmallow, while the drink itself wins as a sweet, fizzy, and misty cocktail that tastes like inhaling boozy vanilla Halloween fog.

Pirates of the Caribbean Drinks at Beak and Barrel – Walt Disney World

    Beak And Barrel
    © io9 Gizmodo

This is actually an all-year-round location, but Beak and Barrel, the Magic Kingdom’s Pirates of the Caribbean immersive bar, opened its doors just in time for Halloween in a moment of serendipity. The experience really feels like you’re living the pirate’s life, complete with its space feeling like ship quarters; one booth is styled like the jail cell from the ride, there’s a parrot mascot animatronic, and there are activations of certain effects such as shipwrecking storms hitting the decks (in that imagineering projections and sound effects way, like on the ride). However, the drinks easily make this such a treasure to escape to. In particular, I love the nod to the iconic attraction and movie franchise’s skull with the sweet blackberry-leaning “Plunderer’s Punch,” a Kraken Black Rum-based libation that’s served in a pirate skull mug. My personal favorite is the “Salty Seas mARRRgarita,” which has ube-infused blanco tequila and is, of course, salty like the sea.

Pastrami Pizza – Six Flags Magic Mountain Fright Fest

    Six Flags Pizza
    © io9/Gizmodo

Pizza slices that have no right being this good because they’re food mashup abominations abound! At Six Flags Magic Mountain’s Fright Fest, which did not have the Conjuring Universe drinks I was hoping for, I still quite enjoyed the monster pastrami pizza. Truly, pastrami baked into mozzarella with pickles on pizza drizzled with mustard is cursed, but I dug it.

“The Enchanted Elixir” and “Pickle Hitchin’”- Knott’s Scary Farm

    Knotts Scary Farm Elixir
    © io9/Gizmodo

Knott’s Scary Farm’s “The Enchanted Elixir” is another gin-based, color-changing drink I loved that tastes like a spellbinding spirit the Green Witch brewed herself. While you had the option to potion bottle it up and carry it with you, I much preferred it iced in the cup, which featured Knott’s Scary Farm’s legendary icon, because it brought out the fresh notes of citrus—but you do miss out on the color-changing effects. At least the cup lights up! You can get it at the medicine wagon next to the Boogeyman bar at Scary Farm, which also has the best under-the-radar drink of the season, “Pickle Hitchin’.”  Picture it (because taking a good snap of it was nearly impossible in the dark hole in the wall shack): half a theme park pickle snack but hollowed out to be filled with whiskey and pickle juice—it’s a drink and a snack that’s filling and will take the edge off screaming your face off all night.

  • Universal Executive Regrets Most Hilarious, Perfect Part of ‘Fast and Furious’ Franchise

Before the abysmal mess that was Fast X, the ninth Fast and Furious film, F9, did the most insane thing imaginable. After literal years and years of joking about it, F9 actually sent characters to space. It was Ludacris (literally and figuratively), it was hilarious, and it was wonderful. But now, looking back, one of Universal Studios’ most powerful executives regrets it.

“I’m sorry that we sent them into space,” Donna Langley, the Chief Content Officer for NBCUniversal Studio Group, said recently, as reported by Variety. “We can never get that genie back.”

Langley is right about the second point, of course. Actually doing the most over-the-top thing imaginable in the franchise, when you still have movies to come, maybe wasn’t the right timing. Going to space would’ve been a perfect finale. But, since the fifth film, the trajectory of the series has always been increasingly wild and unbelievable. It got so crazy that this site, which only covers pop culture of a sci-fi or fantasy nature, finally dubbed the franchise io9 worthy (remember when Idris Elba played an enhanced super villain?). They had to go into space. It was inevitable.

The point being, hopefully, what Langley means isn’t that she regrets sending the franchise to space. Hopefully, it’s that she regrets sending the franchise to space so soon. Honestly, we don’t think it’s that, but it happened. It’s done. And now, the way it fits into the franchise is almost as a culmination of the franchise’s wildly unbelievable run. One through four are kind of normal and grounded. Five takes it up a notch. Then six through nine are sci-fi fantasy movies. Space is the peak that allows subsequent movies to dial back to a more grounded, street-level story, which is what franchise star and producer Vin Diesel has been teasing about the long-in-development 11th film in the main series.

So while we kind of understand Langley’s regret, we are here to ease the blow. Fans wanted the Fast and Furious franchise to go into space. Even if they didn’t think they did, they did. It was one of those perfect acts of madness that make the films so unique. Afterwards, all I could think of was, why not go further? Let them race spaceships. Let them drift submarines. I don’t know. I don’t work for Universal. But don’t regret doing the single most hilarious, perfect thing Fast has done in a long, long time.

  • Universal Studios Hollywood Expansion Plans Revealed

The new filling worried some fans about the future of fan-favorite ride WaterWorld

Credit: Tada Images via Adobe Stock

New documents submitted to Los Angeles County in June reveal more information regarding an upcoming expansion of Universal Studios Hollywood, as part of a multi-decade project.

The “Evolution Plan,” as it’s called, was first unveiled in 2006 with an estimated cost of around $7 billion. The plan includes expansions to the exciting studio, theme park, retail, hotel and entertainment areas. The “Evolution Plan” was officially filed in 2013 and promises a multi-decade time frame.

“The NBC Universal Evolution Plan is a comprehensive planning and development effort to maintain Universal City’s status as a center of entertainment and tourism,” says the official plan guidelines. “To meet the future needs of southern California’s entertainment industry, and to allow the site to grow in a way that is compatible with Los Angeles.”

The latest filing of the plan, which was originally submitted for a new technical services building set behind the E.T. parking garage, also includes a map with more never-before-seen conceptual plans for the “Evolution Project.” Fans were quick to notice that a site currently occupied by fan-favorite stunt show WaterWorld is overlaid on the map with a designation for a “New Theme Park Attraction w/ Food & Beverage Retail.”

While Universal currently has no plans to remove WaterWorld, the map does grant them the authority to do so in the future or simply expand the land around it. This left many theme-park fans nervous about the future of WaterWorld, which was originally introduced to the park in 1995. Theme Park Insider speculated about the possibility of an “entire WaterWorld land around the show theater,” like Universal’s parks in Asia currently have.

The map also indicates a brand new CityWalk “Future Destination Venue,” as well as “Parking/Tram maintenance” in a section currently being used for Halloween Horror Nights. The future 500-room hotel originally included in the proposal is also designated on the map, yet Universal has yet to announce the project officially.

  • ‘Terrifier’ Makes an Undeniable Mark on Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood

The gates of Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood have opened, and this year’s event has some of the theme park’s biggest debuts. Between Terrifier and Five Nights at Freddy’s, the headliner haunted houses really pack a punch, with the terror titan-led Jason Universe house, based on the Friday the 13th franchise, also helping to power a killer season start.

But that’s not to say there were some lows; surprisingly, HHN’s anticipated Fallout offering fell short of expectations. Some repeat houses managed to hold enough excitement, but the West Coast event—which is smaller than the version mounted by Halloween Horror Nights Orlando—might prove to create uneven experiences for park guests who can’t shell out the extra dough for express passes.

Express tickets were provided by Universal for media to be able to review all the houses, and that’s a key takeaway from the start: as theme park insiders, it was clear to us that it might be near impossible to visit all the houses if you do general event admission. If you’re locked in to that price point, always be sure to prioritize 3-4 houses and one entertainment offering—between the Blumhouse-themed Terror Tram, the stunt show The Purge: Dangerous Waters, or the Chainsaw Man short film screening. If you really want to do everything in one night, upgrading to express may be your best bet.

I do have one pro tip from attending in past years: the express pass will sometimes be offered at 50% off near the end of the night and you can buy in to race through all the houses in the last few hours of the event. I’ve done it myself. You can only take advantage if you’re already in the park when the signs go up at the ticket upgrade stations, so keep an eye out for that.

As an LA local, I’ve also simply spread it out by buying a multi-night ticket (such as the “Frequent Fear” pass) and going once a week to hang out for vibes and scope out shorter lines for houses I’ve missed or want to do again.

Here’s what we thought of Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood for 2025:

    The Good

    © Gizmodo

Terrifier: Art the Clown has unofficially solidified his place as a Horror Nights icon. From the moment you arrive at the event, the roaming silent clown killer chillingly charms with his bag of demented tricks. Personally, and like most going to the event, this was my first exposure to the character and the world of Terrifier, having been deterred by some of the divisive discourse surrounding the gratuitous violence of the franchise. However, the Terrifier house cleared up some of my concerns and I think the films fall more into an absurdist gore vibe versus the gritty gore genre (think more Raimi than Roth).

There are more horrific things, I think, in the Monstruos house with a child being eaten by La Llorona than anything in the Terrifier house. Don’t let that lull you into a false sense of security. Art is still very hardcore but in a hilarious way. We very much enjoyed the Looney Tunes or rather Itchy & Scratchy aura on a very sick cartoony clown’s mission of demonic mayhem. The full display of depravity was such a rollicking good time I went home and watched Damien Leone’s Terrifier 2 immediately. Art the Clown will get new fans (myself included) and this house will please longtime fanatics. Get down to the Clown Cafe as soon as you can because this one will have a long queue. And the water splash warnings? They’re for real; bring a poncho.

Jason Universe: This is hands down the scariest house in a traditional sense. Jason stalks you alongside memorable Camp Crystal Lake deaths and with the iconic soundtrack, there are jump scares aplenty. If you’re hard to “get,” you’ll appreciate the attention to detail in making a house that encompasses the Friday the 13th legacy. Even with an express pass, this line was long.

Pro tip: The Jason Universe-themed foods are low-key the HHN snack war winners. We recommend the gouda fondue bread bowl (we paid out of pocket for it); it’s steeped in Angry Orchard cider and comes with green apple slices. It’s available at the same booth as the Jason mask-shaped s’mores. It might be the best food of the horror fest.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: The sheer artistry of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop’s puppetry and HHN performer work makes this one an all-ages all-timer with aplomb. The haunted “animatronics” charging at you or springing to life really works and there are even unexpected jump scares with dead kids creeping up on you as you hover awestruck around Chica or Foxy. Our only complaint is that the stage show centerpiece at the start only featured Freddy; Orlando’s HHN got the whole ensemble.

Chainsaw Man: This import from Universal Studios Japan was an unexpected surprise. Anime fans will delight in a special HHN Japan theater short, which brings the beloved characters (minus Pochita, sadly) into a meta immersive experience where they have to fight demons while attending HHN themselves. The mix of cute, spooky 2D animation and fourth-wall-breaking CG action with a brief adventure featuring the Chainsaw Man gang impresses and I hope we get more overseas fun making its way stateside.

    The So-So

Monstrous At Ush Hhn 2025 7
    © Universal Studios

Scarecrow featuring Slash: The HHN Hollywood Scarecrow lore grows with Slash providing a new score. The scares and creature work always make this a standout. However, we were a little underwhelmed by the music; we loved the riff composed by the rock legend but the boom-clap beat made us feel like we were comically in a corn whiskey commercial. It threw the spooky energy off. Hit the bar after.

Monstruos 3: Celebrating the horrors of Latin American folklore has been a fantastic staple of HHN and really there’s no one scarier than La Llorona (IYKYK) and her penchant for kidnapping children and feasting on their souls. Alongside another killer vengeful cryptid, La Siguanaba, this house makes for a solid scare-filled experience; it just felt a little on the shorter side or perhaps we caught it while there was a cast change, which happens sometimes.

WWE Presents: The Horrors of The Wyatt Sicks: As an homage to the late wrestler who came up with the entertainment wrestling’s campy horror lore, this house is a sentimental and solid send-off. However, as someone whose horror WWE storylines were Undertaker and Kane, I felt so lost and wasn’t sure how to connect the storyline in the house to the personas in the ring. Could have had a bit more cohesion but the set and costuming were on point; we’ll give it that. Pro-tip: This one has a series of gross-smelling rooms, and you’ll also get sprayed.

Terror Tram: Blumhouse taking over the backlot could have been great but it ends up being more like an elaborate meet-and-greet area than a haunt. Unless you particularly want to meet Blumhouse figures of fright and get more steps in, it’s probably best to skip. But if you’re a horror movie fan and want to explore where the movies are made, this is a good spot. The photos are always great so that’s an upside. Be warned: this experience takes up nearly an hour of your time so plan accordingly.

    The Bad

Fallout At Ush Hhn 2025 8
    © Universal Studios

The Purge: Dangerous Waters: This is tired and while we appreciate the effort in the stunts, there hasn’t been a new Purge movie in ages. This space could have been better utilized, perhaps by Fallout, and we’ll explain why in a bit.

    Poltergeist: Retire this one.

Fallout: As a fan of Walton Goggins’ Ghoul, there was not enough sassy and scary outlaw Ghoulussy put into this. The Vault scenes were short and focused too much on Lucy’s linear journey rather than giving us a greatest hits of the horrific moments from the Prime Video show. It also wasn’t scary at all and used up so much space in the former Walking Dead year-long house attraction area with few set pieces that it felt over sooner than we would have liked. For a property that’s going to invite long queues, it’s not worth it. A show on the Waterworld stage starring the Ghoul and Lucy squaring off against figures in the wasteland and the Gulper might have been better.

Pro-tip: The Fallout food is a more fun experience; we recommend the Roasted Radroach Legs but also had a particular affinity for the Roasted Stingwing. There’s also RadAway in pouches for you, in-universe-specific item fans.

Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood is open now through November 2. Get tickets here.

  • David Howard Thornton on the Art of Being Art the Clown

Terrifier icon Art the Clown has made an impact as the new king of painted-face slasher villains and the character enters a new era as a feature at Halloween Horror Nights. The spooky season haunt at Universal Studios Orlando and Universal Studios Hollywood features not only haunted houses inspired by Damien Leone’s bloody franchise but also a huge Art the Clown presence for walk-around characters.

At the red carpet for Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood, Terrifier’s very own Art the Clown, David Howard Thornton, talked to Dead Meat about his advice for the scareactors at Universal embodying the gleefully silent gorehound.

“First of all, I just told them to have fun because that’s how Art is. He finds so much joy in the horrible things he does. And I said, ‘Just find that sadistic joy in just messing with people.’ Just go wild with it and have fun with it. And it’s just, be a little jerk,” he shared.

Having experienced hilariously horror-tinged mime interactions with Art in the park ourselves, we can confirm it’s just a sheer demented delight.

    © io9 Gizmodo

Thornton continued to explain his inspiration to better define the character, who first appeared in Leone’s early 2008 short film The 9th Circle and whom the actor took on in 2016’s Terrifier feature.

“I based him on a vulture. The idea came in because of his beak nose. And so I’ve added more of a hunch to him. Especially when he’s in predator mode, as I like to call it, when he’s actually on the hunt. Birds of prey lead with their eyes first; as they look at something, the head moves. And then the body follows. And that’s what I based Art’s movements off of when he’s in hunt mode.”

Imparting the art of being Art to Universal theme park scareactors really solidifies the clown as a titan of terror at the annual Halloween festivities. Thornton is proud of this horror honor. “It makes me so happy because I think it’s a great thing just to build up the love of our character. Because I love every year watching the videos that they have of Universal with the Grinch, all the things he does … [and] I love seeing now Art’s doing that same thing. And it’s catching that kind of popularity.”

I personally haven’t seen any of the Terrifier films but the memorable interactions within the haunted house and outside in the scare zones made me an instant Art fan. Art very much fits in the chaotic meet-and-greet fun you’d expect and joins fellow theme park standouts such as the Grinch and Beetlejuice in making a home at Universal as characters people want to meet.

  • Universal Reveals a Trailer for Its Behind the Scenes Theme Park Docuseries

Disney gets all the press, and Six Flags has all the dancing commercials, but Universal has always had a strong position in the theme park world. Starting with a simple tour of the Universal lot in Hollywood, the film studio evolved that into several parks across the globe, all of which showcase the big, popular film and TV shows created by the studio. Then, last year, that culminated with Universal opening its most advanced park yet, Epic Universe in Orlando.

And while we’ve seen plenty of documentaries about how Walt Disney built his theme park empire, we haven’t seen much about Universal. Until now. All that history and more is at the center of a new docuseries coming to Peacock on September 29. It’s called Epic Ride: The Story of Universal Theme Parks, and the first trailer was just released. Check it out.

Now, you’re probably thinking what I was thinking after watching that trailer. “It says ‘the story of Universal theme parks,’ but it really seems to be the story of ONE Universal theme park.” Yes, the trailer leans heavily into Epic Universe simply because you’d imagine the idea for this documentary came during its construction. But the inclusion of Steven Spielberg in the series, along with Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, Donna Langley, and Bryce Dallas Howard, all suggest this goes well beyond that.

Spielberg, for example, doesn’t have any direct involvement with any of the Epic Universe IP. But he did, and does, have a huge hand in other Universal rides based on films like ET, Back to the Future, and Jurassic Park. The same goes for the rest of that group, save for Langley, who runs the entire studio, so she can speak to anything.

Basically, while the trailer uses all the new, slick footage of the latest park, we hope that there is plenty of digging into the history of Universal as a theme park brand, because it’s a fascinating story with lots of star power. If it doesn’t, it’s going to be a pretty tedious three-part series.

We’ll find out soon, though, when Epic Ride debuts on Peacock September 29. And no, don’t get this confused with the Inside the Worlds of Epic Universe special, which debuted last month.

  • Peek Inside the ‘Fallout’ Vault at Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood

Universal Studios is rolling out its houses of horror across the country—opening three major hubs that monster fans can make their Halloween season travel destinations—in this month’s theme park news.

io9 was invited by Universal to experience the very big bag of tricks and treats the theme park creatives are unleashing into the world for fandom fiends seeking thrilling frights. On the West Coast, Universal Studios Hollywood prepares to open the vault with the Fallout house inspired by the Prime Video series and Bethesda video game franchise, alongside its other horror property offerings, come September.

Meanwhile in Las Vegas, AREA15 has opened the gates of Universal Horror Unleashed, a desert warehouse that holds haunted gateways to chilling cinematic experiences. And of course things are already getting started at Halloween Horror Nights Orlando with Terrifier’s Art the Clown being set loose alongside the Five Nights at Freddy’s gang.

HHN Hollywood creative director John Murdy walked through the Fallout house with press to explain the story guests would be experiencing nightly during the Halloween event’s run. “Going through the series, my initial reaction was, ‘Wow, this is a huge world,’ and there’s three different kinds of storylines going on with the show. There’s Lucy’s storyline where she’s searching for her father, there’s Maximus’ storyline with the Brotherhood of Steel, and then there’s the Ghoul and his storyline—kind of going from being a TV actor cowboy to his transformation into this bounty hunter character.”

“So what we decided ultimately to do is we would pretty much be following in Lucy’s footsteps,” he shared, as we saw the under-construction vault setting for the wedding leading to her eventual breakout through the vault door.

“So we’re gonna be taking you from the vault to the wasteland, meeting all the characters along the way,” Murdy continued, and elaborated that Hollywood’s version of the house will offer different set pieces than Orlando. One major difference is that the West Coast will get the mutated Yao Guai bear, whereas Florida will get the Gulper.

Murdy knew one thing for certain: “And then for us, when I saw the Super Duper Mart sequence, which is actually the fourth episode of Fallout, I was like, that is tailor-made for a finale to a Halloween horror house because it’s when all the ghouls are breaking out.”

Murdy acknowledged that the Fallout house would also include many Easter eggs for the show and the games, such as a final scare piece to hype up season two of the Prime Video series.

Universal Horror Unleashed at AREA15 Las Vegas

In Las Vegas, Universal’s year-round horror haven is now officially open with houses that feature The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the Universal Monsters, The Exorcist: Believer, and HHN West’s fan-favorite Scarecrow. The Sin City attraction, which io9 attended as a media guest, is the gem of AREA15 Zone 2; it aims to attract immersive-experience fans to a new side of the Strip that elevates experiential entertainment and dining.

Universal Horror Unleashed features spooky sips and eats in addition to live acts, including HHN East’s icons Jack the Clown and Chance—who perfectly suit the chaotic clownery of Vegas.

Many HHN fans will notice that neither Orlando nor Hollywood features a Universal Monsters house this year and that’s because of Universal Horror Unleashed. And when we say it’s the best one yet, we mean it mostly because it finally debuts the Creature From the Black Lagoon as part of the action.

There’s a whole under-the-sea sequence where you wade past seaweed to come face-to-face with the creature that is swimmingly well executed. On top of that you’ll encounter Frankenstein’s Monster, the Bride, the Phantom of the Opera, Quasimodo, the Wolf Man, and the Mummy—along with the Gill-man—in an all-out mash that you’ll want to go through over and over again. For ticket information visit here.

Universal Studios Orlando HHN and Epic Universe

While we haven’t yet visited HHN Orlando, the fun officially kicks off this weekend with the annual event’s opening. To celebrate, Art the Clown from Terrifier has taken over the social media account to show he’s taken Jack’s place as the resident clown at Universal Studios in Florida.

And of course, if you’re hoping to see the Universal Monsters while you travel to the East Coast, you can make a day of it at Epic Universe with a visit to Darkmoor and Frankenstein Manor for Monsters Unchained—and then of course go scream your face off at HHN. There’s also no telling what monsters you’ll run into; there could be an Invisible Man or a wild Ygor looking for the Frankenstein creations.

  • We Tried Universal’s Radical (and Rad-Filled) ‘Fallout’ Food for Halloween Horror Nights

Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights is bringing the wasteland from Fallout to life in more ways than the haunted house inspired by the hit Prime Video show and video game.

io9 was recently invited to HHN Hollywood’s food tasting to try the frightful fare coming to the spooky season haunt event. We had the option to preview selections from menu items and merch inspired by this year’s slate of horror IPs coming to the theme park, including Terrifier, Five Nights at Freddy’s, and the Jason (Voorhees) Universe. But it was Fallout that nuclear blasted us away with big hits and surprising misses.

Let’s start with the main courses!

    Fallout Post-Apocalyptic Rations

    © io9 Gizmodo

Loaded Cram Fries: These hearty, cheesy pub fries with fried spam chunks are good for sharing; it’s pretty standard theme park fare. I love the cheese and potato combo always but could do without the spam; the dry, greasy canned meat on top of greasy fries was too heavy.
Roasted Radroach Legs: The TV dinner-style blackened Radroach (turkey) wings with a side of pub fries were pretty solid. The glaze did give it the right color to pass for, you know, a giant roach piece, which works.
Roasted Stingwing: I was pleasantly surprised by the plant-based meatloaf served with insta-mash and mushroom gravy. The mash was a bit flavorless, but that was fine because once it’s worked in with the Stingwing (Beyond) meat and mushroom gravy, it’s so tasty! I had two of these and plan to order at the park when I go again, instead of the Radroach—and I’m not even a vegan; that’s how you know it’s good. I would fight a mutated scorpion fly to eat it if it was rationed in the wasteland.

Other savory options and their descriptions from Universal Studios HHN we’ll try when it’s open:

    • Brahmin Burger – all-beef burger topped with smoked brisket, pickles and BBQ sauce
    • Gulper Stew – creamy clam chowder topped with green onions and crispy bacon
    • Iguana on a Stick – cheesy cornflake-crusted corn dog

    Fallout Dessert and Drinks

    Fallout 4
    © io9 Gizmodo

Yum Yum Deviled Eggs: These nearly got me tricked. I love deviled eggs, and while I do think that would have been a haunting choice to later experience as part of the gaseous smells of the haunted houses, it turns out they’re dessert! The eggs are actually coconut panna cotta filled with Chamoy pineapple bits and topped with mango topping and Tajin. As someone who is not into that profile of flavors, I bowed out but have to hand it to the Universal culinary team; the texture and look had me so fooled. It’s a playful callback to the safe-to-eat-for-200-years Yum Yum Deviled Eggs in the show and games.

RadAway: It comes in a pouch that’s game accurate over show accurate, which is just awesome. It’s a lemonade that has faint notes of chipotle but definitely overpowers the palate with pineapple flavor. If that’s your bag, have fun; I’d rather be a ghoul than drink the RadAway.

The rest of the drink and dessert fare:

    • Vault Dwellers Wedding Cake – red velvet sponge cake with cream cheese mousse
    • Sunset Sarsaparilla – hot honey root beer topped with sweet cold foam (non-alcoholic)
    • Quantum Fizz – blue raspberry Sprite with a sour blue raspberry rim (non-alcoholic)
    • The Nuclear Blast – vodka, peach schnapps, blue curaçao, orange and lemon juice, simple syrup, and Sprite topped with a dehydrated lemon wheel

Take a look at the gallery below for a full preview of the options that will be available this fall at HHN Hollywood!

Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights starts Thursday, September 4, and runs through Sunday, November 2. Tickets are available for purchase here.

  • Universal will open fourth Orlando theme park next May

Universal will open fourth Orlando theme park next May

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Universal Orlando Resort will open its fourth theme park in central Florida just in time for Memorial Day next year, upping the competition against Disney in the theme park capital of the United States.

Universal Epic Universe will open to visitors on May 22 with themed areas based on Harry Potter, Super Nintendo and “How to Train Your Dragon,” as well as monster movie brands, Universal officials said Thursday.

“This is such a pivotal moment for our destination, and we’re thrilled to welcome guests to Epic Universe next year,” said Karen Irwin, president and chief operating officer of Universal Orlando Resort.

Tickets and vacation packages for the new theme park go on sale next week. At first, visitors with multi-day passes will be allowed to visit Universal Epic Universe on only one day due to its anticipated popularity. They can choose from the other three parks — Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure and the Volcano Bay water park — as part of multi-day ticket offerings.

The park’s new hotel, Universal Helios Grand Hotel, also will open at the same time, joining 10 other hotels at the resort.

Universal’s main competition in the Orlando area, Walt Disney World, also has four theme parks, and it too plans to expand. Disney officials have indicated that they could invest up to $17 billion in the Florida resort and add a fifth theme park.

  • Universal City hotel expansion project clears early approval hurdle

Universal City hotel expansion project clears early approval hurdle

Construction of a new high-rise addition to the Hilton hotel in Universal City was approved by the Los Angeles Planning Commission, clearing a major hurdle for the long-planned expansion.

The decision comes as Universal Studios and other popular tourist destinations in the region shine for hoteliers even as other properties in California’s urban centers struggle to fill their rooms.

The commission recommended last week that the City Council approve construction of an 18-story addition to the 24-story Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City hotel, which opened in 1984. The addition would have 395 rooms, bringing the total between the two structures to 890 rooms, putting that Hilton among the ranks of the largest hotels in Los Angeles County.

Hotels near popular leisure destinations such as Disneyland and Universal Studios Hollywood are outperforming California hotels that are intended to serve business travelers and meetings, said hotel consultant Alan Reay, president of Atlas Hospitality Group.

“Big full-service hotels have been really impacted by the work-from-home movement and the pullback of the convention and meeting business,” Reay said.

Universal City is “a little island that is doing phenomenally well,” he said, with average occupancy at the Hilton there at 92% last year.

“I don’t know any other hotels that are running that kind of occupancy” at a similar price point, he said. “That really tells you the strength of the location and the strength of the brand.

“It makes sense to add the rooms,” said Reay, who is not involved in the planned development.

The addition would include, three restaurants, two swimming pools and an expansion of the existing three-level parking garage.

    (Ankrom Moisan)

The expansion is proposed by Sun Hill Properties Inc., which owns the Universal City hotel operated by Hilton.

Sun Hill President Mark Davis said the company is “immensely gratified” to have the Planning Commission’s endorsement.

“We still believe in the future of L.A. and the continued growth of our primary demand driver, Universal Studios Theme Park, the key magnet to attract tourism to the City of Angels,” he said in a statement.

If approved by the City Council, construction would take about 30 months, according to city documents recommending development. An expansion of the Hilton was first proposed in 2017 by a previous owner of the property, who estimated at the time that more than 70% of guests were there to visit the Universal Studios Hollywood theme park that features the $500-million Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

The design of the addition by architecture firm Ankrom Moisan also calls for a spa, three restaurants, an indoor-outdoor bar, two swimming pools, a lobby connecting to the existing hotel building and an expansion of the existing three-level parking garage.

The planned expansion, which Sun Hill intends to complete in time to serve the 2028 Olympics, comes as hotel sales are flagging in Los Angeles County and throughout the state amid high interest rates and as smaller-sized deals have been a drag on the market, according to a recent report from Atlas Hospitality.

Times staff writer Caroline Petrow-Cohen contributed to this report.

  • 24-year-old trans Latina Angeleno & makeup artist shot to death

24-year-old trans Latina Angeleno & makeup artist shot to death

LOS ANGELES, CA – Today, the TransLatin@ Coalition commemorated a significant milestone as it marked the launch of its 15th Anniversary Campaign during a press conference held in Los Angeles. The event also served as a platform to unveil the organization’s 2023 Annual Report, shedding light on its journey, accomplishments, and ongoing commitments.

Led by Bamby Salcedo, President and CEO of the TransLatin@ Coalition, the press conference highlighted the perilous situations faced by transgender and Latinx individuals in their home countries, where they often confront insurmountable violence.

Salcedo emphasized the harsh reality that many flee to cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco seeking asylum, only to encounter further violence and danger, often leading to deportation and, tragically, sending them back to potential harm or death.

A poignant moment of the event was the unveiling of a new logo commemorating the organization’s 15th anniversary, aptly dubbed their “quinceañera.” This symbolizes not only a milestone but also a renewed commitment to advocacy and support for the TransLatin@ community.

In a groundbreaking announcement, Salcedo revealed plans for a $35 million state of the art multiservice and multipurpose space aimed at providing a safe and secure space for transgender and gender nonconforming individuals. With $20 million already secured, this initiative underscores the organization’s dedication to addressing the pressing needs of the community.

The TransLatin@ Coalition, founded in 2009 by a group of transgender and gender nonconforming immigrant women in Los Angeles, has evolved into a nationally recognized organization with a presence in 10 states across the U.S. It offers direct services to transgender, gender nonconforming, and intersex individuals in Los Angeles, with a focus on empowering and improving the quality of life for its members.

Since its inception, the organization has achieved numerous milestones, including the establishment of the Center for Violence Prevention and Transgender Wellness in 2015, the opening of the first-ever TransLatin@ office in 2016, and the launch of the #TransPolicyAgenda in 2019.

The TransLatin@ Coalition’s advocacy efforts have also extended to legislative triumphs, such as the passage of AB2218 in 2020, which allocates grant funding for transgender wellness and equity programs, and supporting bills like AB1163 and AB 1487, aimed at advancing transgender rights.

With the recent expansion to include the El Monte site and the opening of a new building on Sunset, the TransLatin@ Coalition continues to broaden its reach and impact, reaffirming its commitment to serving the community and creating inclusive spaces where history is made and celebrated.

“Beautiful and amazing people, who are trans, gender non-conforming, or intersex, please know that you are beautiful and amazing and that you are valued. Do not feel alone. There is a whole movement that is fighting for you. Continue to assert your presence within the tapestry of our society. We love you, we see you, we thank you,” Salcedo told the Blade.

As the organization looks ahead to the next 15 years and beyond, its mission to advocate for the specific needs of the TransLatin@ community remains steadfast, guided by values of altruism, respect, transparency, and collaboration.

  • ‘Epic Universe Is Built on an Amazing Concept,’ Says Literally Steven Spielberg

‘Epic Universe Is Built on an Amazing Concept,’ Says Literally Steven Spielberg

Ask me about my new best friends, Chronos and Astronomica.
    Photo: Universal via YouTube

The dream of a classic-movie-monster cinematic franchise called Dark Universe is alive in Orlando. In its ongoing noble quest to become the superior Florida theme-park destination (real heads know it already is), Universal Orlando Resort has released a trailer for Epic Universe, its long-anticipated “third gate” and the first new Disney or Universal theme park to open in America since Disney California Adventure beta-launched in 2001. It looks expensive. It looks creative. It does, in fact, look epic.

The trailer is hosted by Mark Woodbury, CEO of Universal Destinations & Experiences, who is feeling his Michael Eisner oats as he talks about the storied history of the studio tram tour that started it all. He then launches into Universal’s current mission of building a theme park that will offer storytelling and immersion in “the most visceral manner possible.” The result is a theme park made up of “five worlds,” connected through “portals,” a frightening example of multiverse oversaturation crossing over from movies to real life.

This is forgiven, though, once the president of Universal, Molly Murphy, introduces the concept of “Chronos, the first portal, where all the planets will align.” We love highfalutin world-building-, original IP–, sci-fi/fantasy-speak. Chronos leads to Celestial Park, which will “put the park back in theme park,” which I guess means it will have grass, benches, and landscaping in addition to “Astronomica, where you can play with dancing fountains.” Love that. The concept art lands somewhere between the Jules Verne Tomorrowland in Disneyland Paris, His Dark Materials, Spyro, and ancient civ.

The other four areas are IP based. There’s a How to Train Your Dragon land and a Dark Universe featuring Frankenstein, the Mummy, et al. that promises “everything you’ve ever wanted to experience with monsters in this world” (which … have you ever searched Dracula or werewolf on AO3?). There’s also another Wizarding World park, this time themed to the Ministry of Magic. I shudder at the thought of experiencing Grindelwald’s many crimes up close and in person. Finally, and most anticipated, is the East Coast version of Super Nintendo World, which will be larger than its Hollywood counterpart. While it wasn’t teased in the video, we know that Universal is constructing a Donkey Kong mine-cart coaster in addition to porting over the Mario Kart ride.

The video ends with Steven Spielberg promising that “Epic Universe is built on an amazing concept,” which the CEO defines as “What I think we’re trying to do most is give people the opportunity to really experience the full thrill of being alive.”

So what do you think? Too much for a theme park to promise, or just the right amount of ambition? Do you think there will be a Grindelwald meet and greet? Are you excited by the thought of Jay Baruchel’s prerecorded voice telling you to “keep your hands and arms inside the vehicle at all times” on a How to Train Your Dragon ride? Epic Universe opens officially in 2025. Then, and only then, will we really experience the full thrill of being alive.

Has Sydney Sweeney Been Lying About Her Relatable Pre-Stardom Hollywood Job?! – Perez Hilton

Fans think they may have caught Sydney Sweeney in a lie!

In multiple interviews, the 26-year-old has shared that long before becoming famous, she was a struggling actress who had various jobs to help pay the bills — including working as a tour guide at Universal Studios. Sydney recently opened up about that time in her life during her appearance on Hot Ones, saying:

“I was a struggling actor in high school, and I had to pay all my own bills because my mom…. I’d pay my own phone bill, car insurance, everything – gas. I’m so glad she did because I’ve learned how to budget and save my money and know what’s important in life. I love tour guides at Universal. I memorized the entire thing, so I was there for a little bit, and then I actually booked Sharp Objects.”

It’s a classic Hollywood rags-to-riches story! Pay your dues with one of those less prestigious jobs, and you too can hit it big!

HBO‘s Sharp Objects came out in 2018 and was critically acclaimed — and Sydney has been booked and busy ever since! Watch the interview moment (below):

So Sydney went from working as a tour guide at Universal to being a big star in Hollywood. Damn. It’s a great story! Better than the idea she immediately found success without any normal job whatsoever, that’s for sure. However, not everyone is buying it!

Photographer and TikToker Becca Murray — who worked as a tour guide in Universal for 7 years — 100 percent believes the Euphoria star is “lying.” Her reasons? For starters, it’s a long and difficult process to get the job as a Universal tour guide. They have to audition, take a memorization test, interview, get accepted into a class, and go through weeks of training. It’s actually pretty exclusive — and Sydney didn’t mention any of that. Another big reason she doubts the Anyone But You star’s story? She pointed out that Universal Studios loves to bill the job as getting a “foot into the entertainment industry.” If Sydney had worked as a tour guide briefly and then made it into the business right away, she reckons Universal would have used her success story to help market the job:

“They hold onto it. They claim it. They use it as marketing. They will not shut the f**k up about it. If Sydney Sweeney did even one tour, if she made it through all of the like getting the job, doing the class, passing the tests, was sitting, in uniform, on a tram with her little mic, did one tour, and then got a call from her agent and was like ‘Oh my God, you guys I booked a job. Bye.’ They would claim that. That would be lore. People would still be talking about it.”

Has Sydney Sweeney been lying all this time?! Well, there’s more… In the comments of the video, other employees even took to the comments section to say they’d never seen her working at Universal before:

“Worked in costumes for the park for ten years and knew a ton of guides and never once saw her.”

“Also a tour guide here! Our department manager looked it up in the database and she never even applied!”

“naur bc i know there would be guests who would have a photo of and with her”

Yet another TikToker who works as a tour guide echoed the points made by Becca in her own video, noting Sydney continues to give a “weird, vague, non-answer” when talking about her job at Universal. She even shared that several of her colleagues would have been working with the Madame Web star around the time she would have been employed at Universal — and they never saw her on the job. Check it out (below):

    I LOVE my job but ive never lied about having it!! #fyp #foryou #sydneysweeney #hotones #kellyclarksonshow #anyonebutyou #tourguide

Of course, everyone should take these accusations with a grain of salt. We can’t verify everything folks on TikTok say. But is it convincing? Yeah…

But if Sydney did lie, we have to ask, as many other fans are now wondering… why risk it? It’s a great story, but she could have said she was a barista at one of the dozens of cafes that have opened and closed in El Lay in the past decade. Why lie about having a very specific job like that where people could check? She had to have known she would’ve been caught eventually! We need someone at Universal to pull out the records and confirm whether Sydney is telling the truth or not… STAT!

In exactly four weeks, Super Nintendo World will open at Universal Studios Hollywood and it’s looks to be any classic gamer’s dream come true.

The park will be situated in the same area as the Jurassic Park and Transformers rides, in Universal’s lower lot. However, unlike it surrounding rides, Super Nintendo World will offer an environment that fully immerses guests inside a Nintendo game.
