    If there’s one thing the internet loves, it’s a film with a love triangle. We’ve tirelessly argued over Team Edward versus Team Jacob, Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah, Team Stefan or Team Damon, Team (insert attractive young male star) or Team (insert second attractive young male star).


    So, when Luca Guadagnino’s latest homoerotic cinematic masterpiece —
    Challengers — debuted, you knew the world would be hooked. Not only does Challengers offer up steamy scenes, but it includes a recipe for instant success: Zendaya as the female lead, and two rapidly rising young leading men — Josh O’Connor (Patrick Zweig) and Mike Faist (Art Donaldson) — for the world to fawn over.

    Yes, it’s Zendaya’s time to be the
    villain as Tashi Duncan — although the internet’s still debating whether she’s a feminist icon or just plain evil. Already receiving high praise as one of the best movies of 2024 so far — our review was pretty glowing, too.

    But I couldn’t help but notice that
    Challengers solidifies a major shift in the fashion trendscape. Zendaya and her stylist — Law Roach — are known for their emblematic looks that set trends for the following year — and years to come. The verdict is in…luxury athleisure has never been more popular.

    Similar to
    Quiet Luxury made popular by shows like SuccessionSuccessionand It-Girls like Sofia Richie, luxury athleisure gives a money vibe…without the display of labels. Challengers is all about looking like an old-money tennis pro.

    Zendaya’s been delivering some killer serves (get it?) in the name of

    Fast Retailing, the Japanese giant that owns popular clothing brands Uniqlo and Theory, will start paying its employees much more this year.

    The company announced Wednesday that it would boost salaries in Japan by up to 40%, acknowledging that “remuneration levels have remained low” in the country in recent years.

    “This will include employees from headquarters and corporate departments responsible for the functions of the company’s global headquarters, as well as employees working in stores,” the firm said in a statement.

    The move comes just days after Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida called on business leaders to accelerate raises for workers, warning that the economy risked falling into stagflation if wage rises continued to fall behind price increases.

    Japan is grappling with the biggest drop in living standards in nearly a decade.

    Last Friday, the world’s third largest economy reported its worst real-wage decline in more than eight years, exacerbating conditions for workers already contending with higher costs of living.

    In the capital of Tokyo, core inflation, which measures items excluding fresh food, climbed 4% in December compared to a year ago, above the 3.8% expected by economists, according to official figures released Tuesday.

    That was “the highest seen in 40 years,” analysts at Nomura said in a Wednesday report.

    “Inflation in Japan is a factor in our considerations,” a Fast Retailing spokesperson told CNN on Wednesday.

    But the company is generally more focused on aligning “each employee’s remuneration with global standards, to be able to increase our competitiveness,” the representative added.

    The company will officially adjust its overall compensation system in March. Starting salaries for entry-level university graduates will jump by roughly 18%, while new store managers could see a hike of approximately 36%, according to the company.

    The retailer has also been hiking pay for staff in some of its overseas markets, leading to pay bumps ranging from 5% to 25%, the spokesperson said.

    Japanese billionaire Tadashi Yanai’s Fast Retailing, the operator of clothing chain Uniqlo, said Thursday its ​​operating profit rose 19.4% to 297.3 billion yen ($2 billion) in the year ended in August, boosted by strong sales at its stores in India, Southeast Asia and Australia.

    Asia’s biggest apparel retailer said its operating income in South Asia, Southeast Asia and Oceania more than tripled in the same period. According to Fast Retailing’s 2021 annual report, the company has 270 stores across Australia (25 stores), India (6), Indonesia (40), Malaysia (48), the Philippines (63), Singapore (26), Thailand (54) and Vietnam (8), accounting for almost a fifth of the company’s international stores.

    Operating profit in Greater China, which includes Hong Kong and Taiwan, declined almost 17% to 83.4 billion yen in the year ended in August. “Greater China region reported a significant contraction in profit due to COVID-related restrictions on movement,” the company explained in its earnings report. The Greater China region, where it has 932 stores, accounts for over 60% of Fast Retailing’s international stores.

    In this year’s Japan’s Richest list, published in late May, Yanai, who was the second richest last year, reclaimed the title of the country’s richest person, though his fortune slid by 44% to $23.6 billion. A slowdown in sales in the domestic market, as well as in China, impacted shares of his Fast Retailing. The company’s shares are flat this year, compared to a 7.9% drop for Japan’s Nikkei 225 index.
