The Kids Kindness Project and Genesis Hopeful Haven Aim to Close Foster Youth Unemployment Gap With The Internship Project

While Unemployment Is At A Record Low, Foster Youth Is Still Left Homeless And Unemployed.

    Press Release

    updated: Mar 5, 2019

Two organizations have come together to tackle the problem of unemployment amongst foster youth – an issue that often leads to homelessness. According to a multi-state study, 50 percent of former foster children are unemployed. Even those who do have jobs can run into trouble supporting themselves, as more than 71 percent report an annual income of less than $25,000. This population is highly vulnerable.

The Kids Kindness Project and Genesis Hopeful Haven have aimed to close the gap by creating The Internship Project. “We are preparing our foster kids, so they don’t become just another statistic,” says Fritzie Saintoiry, CEO of Genesis.

The longer someone has been in foster care, the smaller his or her chance of achieving adoption or permanent guardianship. Youth who “age-out” of the system have turned 18 and now face very low odds of achieving Independence and living productive lives. With no family support and a lack of essential skills, how will these youth be self-sufficient?

Joshua J, 18, says his biggest fear of aging out of the system is being homeless. In 10th grade, now left to survive on his own, he states, “If you don’t have a place to go, you’re not getting a job. If you don’t have a job, then you’re not going to have anywhere to go.” However, Joshua’s outlook on life changed when he participated in The Internship Project last summer.

The Internship Project prepares foster youth for the professional world by providing a chance to acquire valuable professional experience. After participating in the program, Joshua and many others discovered areas of interest for their careers, uncovered hidden talents and gained confidence to pursue job opportunities in the future.

Too many child welfare systems don’t offer the basic programs that make the difference between a successful career and a life spent struggling to get by. For every success story, there are still countless former foster youth who don’t know if they’ll ever be able to support themselves.

To reach more youth in need, The Internship Project staring a brand-new concept. The first “NEVER GIVE UP” conference; a motivational speaking seminar which will be held this Spring in Miami Dade welcoming 150 foster youth. “Our goal is to give foster youth the strength and motivation they need to succeed their transition into adulthood,” says Alexandra Hokfelt co-founder of the project.

Youth who attend the event will benefit from incredible motivational speakers and have the chance to sign up for The Internship Project to be paired up with employers in our communities.

This project gives companies the opportunity to be part of a network of businesses that care and change lives by welcoming participants for a one-day internship. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I will learn.”

RespectAbility Presents Report: Best and Worst States on Jobs for People With Disabilities

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Feb 15, 2019

    • Only 111,804 people with disabilities entered the workforce in 2017, down from the previous year’s increase of more than 343,000 new jobs for people with disabilities.
    • Florida experienced the biggest growth in job numbers with over 23,000 people with disabilities entering the workforce. Of the 50 states, 29 states saw job gains for Americans with disabilities.
    • Vermont, under Gov. Phil Scott, becomes one of the top 10 states with the best employment rates, and Rhode Island, under Gov. Gina Raimondo, jumps from 47th in the nation to 19th.

Washington, DC, February 15, 2019 (Newswire) – New statistics released this week show that Americans with disabilities saw a slowdown in job gains compared to those of the previous year. The Disability Statistics Compendium, released by Institute on Disability at the University of New Hampshire, shows that the employment rate for people with disabilities has risen to 37 percent. The Compendium also shows that geography has an impact on employment outcomes for Americans with disabilities. People with disabilities in North Dakota are twice as likely to have jobs as West Virginians with disabilities.

The newly published 2018 Annual Disability Statistics Compendium compiles data collected by the Census Bureau. The Compendium is intended to equip policy-makers, self-advocates and others with clear statistics on disability in America today. Out of more than 20 million working-age people with disabilities, 7.5 million have jobs. This data also shows the serious gaps that remain between disabled and non-disabled Americans. 37 percent of U.S. civilians with disabilities ages 18-64 living in the community had a job, compared to 77.2 percent for people without disabilities.

“Our nation was founded on the principle that anyone who works hard should be able to get ahead in life,” said Hon. Steve Bartlett, current Chairman of RespectAbility, who co-authored the Americans with Disabilities Act when he was in Congress. “People with disabilities deserve the opportunity to earn an income and achieve independence, just like anyone else.”

Further analysis by the nonpartisan advocacy group RespectAbility shows that 111,804 people with disabilities entered the workforce in 2017. That number is down from the previous year’s increase of more than 343,000 new jobs for people with disabilities. Different factors explain the slower pace of job growth. A slowing economy is one factor, as is changing patterns of growth in different sectors of the economy. One lesson is clear to Andrew Houtenville, PhD, of UNH’s Institute on Disability: “There is still a long way to go toward closing the gap between people with and without disabilities.”

“Employment rates only tell part of the story,” added Philip Kahn-Pauli, Policy and Practices Director at RespectAbility. “When you look across the intersection of disability and race, you find serious gaps in outcomes.” Only 28.6 percent of African Americans with disabilities have jobs compared to the 38.6 percent of Hispanics with disabilities and 41.2 percent of Asian Americans with disabilities who have jobs.

Some states have higher employment rates for people with disabilities than others. North Dakota leads the nation with 56.3 percent of its citizens with disabilities employed and is closely followed by South Dakota with a 51.3 percent disability employment rate. One of the biggest surprises in this year’s data is Vermont. Under Gov. Phil Scott, Vermonters with disabilities have seen a 5.7 percent increase in jobs, bumping their employment rate to 47.2 percent. For a full break down, please see the table below:

Of the 50 states, 29 states saw job gains among the disability community, while people with disabilities lost economic ground in 21 states. Census Bureau data shows an astounding 23,953 Floridians with disabilities gained new jobs. Illinois saw the second biggest job gains for people with disabilities with over 20,000 new jobs even as 50,000 people without disabilities left Illinois’ workforce.

Rhode Island deserves credit for seeing a major turnaround. As reported by RespectAbility, Rhode Island under Gov. Gina Raimondo ranked 47th in the nation last year with an abysmal 30 percent disability employment rate. As a result of a settlement agreement with the Department of Justice, Rhode Island began to close shelter workshops where people with disabilities had been paid subminimum wages. Through sustained efforts to promote competitive, integrated employment, Rhode Islanders with disabilities are now experiencing new success. Over 7,000 people with disabilities entered the workforce in 2017, pushing Rhode Island to stand 19th in the nation. As bipartisan consensus grows around ending subminimum wages, Rhode Island shows that transformative success is possible.

What is the story behind the numbers? What is driving these changes? The answer is simple. According to Vincenzo Piscopo of the Coca-Cola Company: “People with disabilities bring a unique skill set that it is very valuable for companies.” He went on to add, “As it relates to employment and competitiveness in the workplace, we have to stop thinking of disability as a liability and start thinking of it as an asset.”

Brand name companies such as JP Morgan Chase, Coca-Cola, Ernst & Young, IBM, Walgreen’s, Starbucks, CVS and Microsoft show people with disabilities are successful employees. These companies also know that these workers improve the bottom line. “People with disabilities bring unique characteristics and talents to the workplace,” said RespectAbility President Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi. “There are no limits to what they can do when given the chance.”

As more companies hire employees with disabilities, conversations are shifting to focus on inclusion. “Disability inclusion is no longer about automatic doors, curb cuts, ramps, and legislation,” says Jim Sinocchi, Head of the Office of Disability Inclusion at JP Morgan Chase. “Today, the new era of disability inclusion is about “assimilation” – hiring professionals with disabilities into the robust culture of the firm.”

According to the Census Bureau, there are more than 56 million Americans living with a disability. Disabilities include visible conditions such as spinal cord injuries, visual impairments or hearing loss and invisible disabilities such as learning disabilities, mental health or Autism.

Voter research, done by RespectAbility, shows how disability issues connect to all aspects of American life. “Fully three-quarters of likely voters either have a disability themselves or have a family member or a close friend with disabilities,” said former Representative and Dallas Mayor Steve Bartlett. “People with disabilities are a politically active, swing vote, and candidates should take note of important issues they care about.”

As 2019 moves into 2020 and the political campaign season heats up, continuing job growth for people with disabilities will be a crucial indicator of the health of the American economy.

As Labor Day Approaches, People With Disabilities Are Getting Jobs

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 29, 2018

As Labor Day weekend approaches, the disability community has a lot to celebrate. 343,483 more people with disabilities joined the American workforce in 2016. This is a four-fold improvement over the previous year when only 87,201 people with disabilities found jobs.

Earlier this summer, business experts with direct experience in hiring people with disabilities gathered together to talk about the dramatic improvement in new jobs for people with disabilities, what’s driving it and how we continue improving. This discussion took place during a summit, “From Washington to Hollywood and Beyond: The Future of Americans with Disabilities,” which was sponsored by RespectAbility, a national nonprofit organization fighting stigmas and advancing opportunities for people with disabilities. The event consisted of panels on education, employment, media representation, and intersectionality.

343,483 more people with disabilities joined the American workforce in 2016. This is a four-fold improvement over the previous year when only 87,201 people with disabilities found jobs.

    Donn Weinberg, Philanthropy Roundtable Chair

Moderated by Donn Weinberg, who chairs the Philanthropy Roundtable, the panelists came from diverse areas of the business world, including Jim Sinocchi of JP Morgan Chase, Ron Painter from the National Association of Workforce Boards, and Vincenzo Piscopo of Coca-Cola.

Piscopo was asked about why he feels that hiring people with disabilities is not just a charitable thing to do, but also the smart thing to do for business. He responded by saying that since becoming immersed in the disability community eight years ago, he has “met amazing people with disabilities with skills that are just incredible.” Piscopo also spoke about how people with disabilities are used to persevering and overcoming challenges, two traits of great employees. Piscopo believes that “when companies hire people with disabilities, they are actually adding value to their company.”

One key concept that resounded through the panel was the concept of normalizing disability. Jim Sinocchi of JP Morgan Chase talked about some of his strategies in navigating disability in the workplace. For example, he said that when employees ask him what to say when they meet people with disabilities, he answers, “How about hello? How about, would you like a cup of coffee?”

Sinocchi feels that some employees are afraid of making mistakes, and the best way to rectify that is for people with disabilities to “own [their] disability.” Sinocchi said that people with disabilities should try to help their colleagues understand what they need, what they want and how they can collaborate.

Piscopo talked about the steps that Coca-Cola is taking to expand inclusion. When Piscopo sees people with disabilities “that are extremely brilliant” who are not being used to their potential, he feels they have “value that has been thrown to the garbage.”

“Why don’t we take advantage of that?” he said. He also talked about how he is working with senior management to show them the skills that people with disabilities bring to the table.

Ron Painter talked about an increased focus on credentials and competence in the hiring process, which means there is a “tremendous opportunity for individuals [with disabilities] to first demonstrate competency and then the rest of the individual.” Painter also believes that automation has “tremendous potential” to level the playing field.

On the subject of equity in hiring practices, Sinocchi was clear about his position on preferential hiring. “The disabled community sometimes goes to our recruiters and says, ‘okay, what jobs do you have for disabled people?’ And we say, ‘we don’t have any.’ We have jobs for qualified people.”

Sinocchi argued that some people with disabilities are more qualified for certain positions than people without disabilities. For example, some people on the autism spectrum are better at focusing on coding, so Sinocchi said that “when we have people on the [autism] spectrum that are available to work in our technology group, they are snapped up immediately.”

One audience member wanted to know about the changing workplace culture, and another asked about tips for people with disabilities seeking employment. Painter recommended American Job Centers, which assist many Americans with and without disabilities in finding employment. Sinocchi noted how he works with his company to make sure they hire services from businesses run by people with disabilities.

“My firm is ripe for change,” he said.

The panelists also were asked about the possibilities for entrepreneurship by and for people with disabilities. Painter was enthusiastic about the question, saying there are “a lot of workforce boards across the U.S. that are investing in entrepreneurship training.”

Weinberg brought up John’s Crazy Socks, a business run by a man with Down syndrome and his father that is a major success.

The panel closed with an optimistic statement from RespectAbility President Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi, who affirmed RespectAbility’s commitment to working with companies to improve employment opportunities for all.

RespectAbility’s Eric Ascher and Lily Cantor contributed to this article.

    Press Release

    updated: Apr 9, 2018

Nexeraa Technologies, an open-sourced, non-programmer’s freeware development platform that is seeking to transform the lives of everyday people in our world today, is proud to announce they have launched their initial crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo.

Determined to map the shortest path to efficiency and agility, Nexeraa wants to equip as many people as possible with life-changing opportunities which will make their value more than that of a robotic counterpart.

Together, with the help of the community, we are working preemptively to do something about the impending robotics age. We need everyone’s interested support to make a difference and curtail the predicted unemployment that is coming. That is why we have launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo that is aimed at doing just that. We’re all gifted. We believe that everyone has something special to give.

    Novem Yong, Founder

Through open-sourced development and a desktop-based drag-and-drop automation application, Nexeraa has created a software tool with unlimited automating potential.

“As society heads toward the digital edge, a world in which robots have assumed most jobs leaving millions unemployed, we’ve developed a platform that is going to make a shift,” said Novem Yong, Founder and Owner of Nexeraa Technologies.

“Together, with the help of the community, we are working preemptively to do something about the impending robotics age.”

Nexeraa’s software application enables users with a computer and basic knowledge of Internet functionality to complete more value-added tasks daily. The platform leverages and reverses the same technology used to create unemployment in the first place. This allows potential opportunities to become available to individuals before they lose their own employment.

“We proudly program for humanity, not for profit,” said Novem. “Our open-source library provides free educational resources, gearing up everyday people for the invisible war that is to come.”

“We need everyone’s interested support to make a difference and curtail the predicted unemployment that is coming. That is why we have launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo that is aimed at doing just that.”

Everyday people can go into Nexeraa, drag-and-drop what they would like the application to mimic through a desktop, and sit back while the software provides the support and confidence these people need to feel valued in a digital age.

Nexeraa has until May 9, 2018 to meet their fundraising goal on Indiegogo.

“Automation will help people free up more time for a more value-added task today,” said Novem. “We’re all gifted. We believe that everyone has something special to give.”

Volunteers gathered in a Paris suburb for a neighborhood cleanup and to hand out copies of the common-sense moral code from which the group takes its name

    Press Release

    updated: Feb 12, 2018

The Way to Happiness Foundation of France is helping tackle community issues in Paris suburbs.

Ten million French people live in these neighborhoods, in some of which unemployment among young men is as high as 45 percent. With no hope for the future, many turn to drugs and crime.

There is no person alive who cannot make a new beginning.

    L. Ron Hubbard, Founder, Scientology

Because some sociological studies have found that disorder in urban neighborhoods can lead to more crime, the first thing the volunteers did was to organize a cleanup. Equipped with plastic bags and cleaning gear, they spruced up the neighborhood.

They also set up their tent, where they handed out thousands of copies of The Way to Happinessthe common-sense moral code written by author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard.

Comprising 21 precepts for better living, The Way to Happiness is unique for several reasons: most moral codes are closely connected to a particular faith. The Way to Happiness is nonreligious and may be used by people of any faith — or no faith at all.

Another special feature of the booklet is that it doesn’t simply lay out what one should or shouldn’t do — it presents guidelines and practical ideas to apply its 21 moral principles.

For example, with heavy unemployment, one’s odds for being hired can be improved by being industrious and competent — two of the precepts of the moral code. The booklet lays out three simple but vital steps anyone can take to improve their competence.

In short, the precepts of this booklet are a tool for taking the chance out of life and gaining an edge.

In the epilogue, Mr. Hubbard wrote:

“One can feel at times like a spinning leaf blown along a dirty street, one can feel like a grain of sand stuck in one place. But nobody has said that life was a calm and orderly thing: it isn’t. One isn’t a tattered leaf nor a grain of sand: one can, to greater or lesser degree draw his road map and follow it.

“One can feel that things are such now that it is much too late to do anything, that one’s past road is so messed up that there is no chance of drawing a future one that will be any different: there is always a point on the road when one can map a new one. And try to follow it. There is no person alive who cannot make a new beginning.”

In cities across the globe, nonprofit organizations, community leaders, educators and police have adopted The Way to Happiness to fight crime, help people improve their lives and raise the standards and potential of their communities.

The Church of Scientology Paris sponsors this chapter of The Way to Happiness Foundation. The church and its members are proud to share the tools for happier living contained in The Way to Happiness. The mission of The Way to Happiness Foundation is to reverse the moral decay of society by restoring trust and honesty the world over through the publication and widespread distribution of The Way to Happiness.

That mission is accomplished on a grass-roots level, worldwide, by individuals who share The Way to Happiness booklet with others and so bring about increased tolerance and understanding between families, friends, groups, communities, nations and mankind — making a safer, less-violent world for all. The book has been distributed in 115 languages in 186 nations.

Harvey Blackwood – As Greece exits its third bailout, hopes are high for a strong economic recovery.

    Press Release

    updated: Oct 4, 2017

Harvey Blackwood: According to the state draft budget revealed on Monday, Greece anticipates that economic recovery will accelerate next year when it plans to exit its bailout. Greece hopes that accelerated economic recovery will help to reduce joblessness and achieve a larger primary surplus.

Greece has only just started to come out of a recession that persisted for several years. The recession destroyed nearly 25 percent of the Greek economy and pushed unemployment up to approximately 28 percent.

Delivering the draft budget to the parliamentary speaker on Monday, Deputy Finance Minister, George Chouliarakis, stated that it would be the last under the terms of the bailouts the country received from the European Central Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the European Commission.

According to the draft budget, Greece’s government predicts that the country’s economy will grow by 2.4 percent in 2017, up 0.6 percent on an earlier projected expansion for this year.

Although unemployment will remain at almost twice the euro zone’s average of 9.1 percent, analysts at Shanghai, China-based Harvey Blackwood believe that it will decrease to around 19 percent from the existing 21.1 percent.

On the economic front, Athens is targeting an optimistic primary budget surplus of 3.57 percent of gross domestic product GDP. This figure is slightly higher than that which was agreed upon with the country’s creditors. According to the draft budget, the government predicts that 2018 will better 2017’s primary surplus target by .45 percent.

Athens agreed to a third international bailout halfway through 2015. The government plans to once again be granted unrestricted access to bond markets by next year when the bailout comes to an end.

America’s Warrior Partnership and Military.com have collaborated to host an educational networking event, titled “Creating Authentic Veteran Employment Programs,” that will offer strategic advice to employers looking to improve their hiring, training and retainment of veterans in the workforce. The two-hour event will occur during the Fourth Annual Warrior Community Integration Symposium hosted by America’s Warrior Partnership on Wednesday, September 6, at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta.

“Military.com is on the forefront of helping businesses engage the veteran workforce, a population that brings exceptional value to businesses in all sectors and industries,” said Jim Lorraine, president and CEO of America’s Warrior Partnership. “The team has developed an outstanding event that will provide employers with an in-depth understanding of the best ways to recruit veterans as they transition out of active service. I can’t think of a better topic to set the tone for our annual Warrior Community Integration Symposium, which focuses on empowering veteran-centered professionals and organizations with the tools and connections they need to improve veteran services in their communities.”

It’s clear why more companies are prioritizing veteran employment programs. Veterans are a skilled, professional group of people who bring unrivaled integrity, tenacity and leadership qualities to the table that can greatly impact companies’ bottom lines.

Karin Childress-Wiley, national director of veteran employment at Military.com

A recent study shows that only seven percent of Fortune 500 companies are happy with their current veteran employment programs, indicating a tremendous opportunity to help companies improve their engagement with veterans as employees. To help organizations improve hiring and engagement programs, Creating Authentic Veteran Employment Programs will provide insight from several guest speakers, including esteemed veterans such as Lt. Gen. David P. Fridovich and Medal of Honor recipient Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta. Experts from Military.com will lead discussions on how companies can develop a veteran-friendly brand and an authentic employment program that supports successful hiring, onboarding and training processes. Overall, the sessions will help companies both before and after a veteran is hired, and address how to manage veterans in the workplace and leverage their unique contributions that can positively impact businesses.

“It’s clear why more companies are prioritizing veteran employment programs,” said Karin Childress-Wiley, national director of veteran employment at Military.com. “Veterans are a skilled, professional group of people who bring unrivaled integrity, tenacity and leadership qualities to the table that can greatly impact companies’ bottom lines. Our website is often the first place veterans go to begin their search for companies looking to hire veterans, so we understand what they’re looking for in a potential employer. We’re excited to share these best practices and help businesses further develop and refine their veteran employment program.”

Wounded Warrior Program Announces Corporate Sponsor, Launches New Website

    [ad_1]

The national employment program teams up with Minton•Jones Company, who will provide inventory to the WWP’s online office supply store.

    Press Release

    updated: May 16, 2017

The Wounded Warrior Program, a national program that helps match disabled Veterans with combat-related injuries with appropriate job opportunities, recently announced Minton•Jones Company as their new corporate sponsor.

Replacing the program’s former sponsor, Industries for the Blind, Minton•Jones Co. takes over as the sole inventory provider to the Wounded Warrior Program’s online supply store. Minton•Jones Co.’s first order of business in their new sponsorship role was to design and launch the Wounded Warrior Program’s brand new website and shopping portal, Wounded-Warrior-Programs.com, which went live last week.

“The entire offering is open for both government and private businesses and corporations. We also sell behind the catalog by offering services to help Federal bars and companies source specialty and hard-to-find items and services.”

    Chip Jones, President, Minton Jones

The WWP’s online store has over 150,000 items including furniture and medical, paper, technology and office supplies available for purchase to both government and private businesses. All sales made through the store provide much-needed support to the program’s mission by directly benefiting those wounded warriors currently registered with the WWP.

The Wounded Warrior Program was founded in 2005 by Dr. David Godbold. The program was created from an idea during a meeting at Womack Army Medical Center concerning the possibility of creating a work program devoted to assisting wounded warriors during their transition back to the civilian workforce. The formation of the Wounded Warrior Program also coincided with a collaboration between Dr. Godbold and Cedric Minor of the Warrior Transition Battalions (formerly the Wounded Warrior Battalions).

Headquartered out of Ft. Bragg Army Base in North Carolina, Dr. Godbold currently works closely with the base’s Warrior Transition Battalion to match wounded warriors with appropriate employment positions.

“We knew for the battalions to be successful with transitioning these wounded warriors, we would need an organization that would employ them,” said Dr. David Godbold, CEO and National Director of the Wounded Warrior Program, the first employment program for combat-injured Veterans of its kind.

In a recent report from the Department of Labor, the unemployment rate among Veterans with service-related injuries in 2016 was at 4.8%, a significant decrease from the reported 9.1% in 2010. Since its establishment 12 years prior, the Wounded Warrior Program has successfully helped over 6,000 injured Veterans secure employment in the civilian sector.

“Wounded warriors need meaningful employment,” said Dr. Godbold. “They want the chance to be productive citizens by providing for their families.”

In addition to their sponsorship, Minton•Jones Company is also dedicated to employing wounded warriors through the program. “We employ multiple [wounded] warriors at Womack Army Medical Center at Ft. Bragg,” Jones said. “We will continue to hire more as we are able to get the program on more bases and facilities.”

The Wounded Warrior Program is always seeking new employment opportunities for the men and women who served our country. To find out how you can employ wounded warriors through the WWP, please visit www.wounded-warrior-programs.com, or contact Dr. David Godbold at dgodbold@wwpus.com.

The WWP is an independent organization based on providing employment through purchases made on the Department of Defense E-MALL and its AbilityOne partners. This is not a charity – donations are not accepted.

After 20 years in one company, Ms. Brout conducted four search strategies, discovered work she was meant to do, helped clients gain confidence and find new jobs, and landed in an amazing job of her own.

Conventional wisdom that 80% of jobs are never advertised is long overdue for extinction. At least 40% of new hires are found through online channels, and this is growing exponentially. Volunteer Center of South Jersey Launches SJ Works Program

    [ad_1]

SJ Works is a new path to employment for those in south jersey who are unemployed and looking to network and volunteer their time.

    Press Release

    Aug 8, 2016

Thanks to a generous grant from New Jersey Community Capital (NJCC), the Volunteer Center of South Jersey is ready to embark on a new program this fall.  Designed to help people realize the benefits of volunteering, networking and keeping a healthy level of productivity during times of unemployment, SJ Works is the only program of its kind in southern New Jersey.

“We realized that South Jersey residents are still struggling to find work and our organization wanted to find a way to help with this pressing issue,” reported VCSJ President Cody Miller. “That’s how the program was born. We touch so many lives, and as an organization that is connected to many non-profits and resources, what better way to improve our community than by helping people to gain employment while volunteering?”

SJ works allows people to give back to their community while connecting them with a non-profit organization. This provides networking opportunities, which can lead to an increased likelihood of finding employment. Participants in the program will have access to program staff, services, and resources through in person training and one-on-one consultation, web interface, e-mail, and telephone support. A cornerstone of the program is a five part workshop series. The scope of the series covers finances, employability, healthy lifestyle, volunteering and networking. Local experts have been invited to speak and detailed information will be released prior to the start of the series.

“New Jersey Community Capital is thrilled to support such an essential program for South Jersey,” said Wayne T. Meyer, President of NJCC. In a study commissioned by the Center for National and Community Service, it was discovered that people who volunteer during times of unemployment have 27% higher odds of achieving new jobs. The data is there, and that’s why the NJCC believed in the viability of the program.

“SJ Works gets participants out of the house, networking and honing their skills,” said Executive Director Michele Epifani. “Times of unemployment can be a low in someone’s life. So, why not engage in something that makes you feel good and possibly lead to a new career?”

The Volunteer Center is interested in any corporate or business sponsors who would like to participate or offer financial assistance as well.  It could be a great opportunity to match prospective employees with current or future hiring needs. The program will offer workshops that deal with healthy living and lifestyle, financial planning and management, resume and cover letter building, tools of the trade for applying for jobs, how to network, Volunteering 101 and much more. Space is limited. To register, please visit http://bit.ly/sjworks and/or email mepifani@sjvolunteers.org.

The Volunteer Center of South Jersey (VCSJ) was established as a private, independent 501c3 non-profit organization in 1996. VCSJ is a volunteer action center (VAC) in South Jersey, covering seven counties from Burlington to Cape May, whose mission is to change lives, empower families, and improve our community through volunteerism and the support of local non-profit organizations. The center offers best practices in civic engagement through education (workshops, publications, webinars, etc.) for volunteers (individual and groups) and organizations (business and non-profit). For more information, please visit http://www.sjvolunteers.org/ for more information.

NJCC is a nonprofit community development financial institution (CDFI) that transforms at-risk communities through strategic investments of capital and knowledge. NJCC invests in affordable housing, community facilities, and economic development ventures that strengthen neighborhoods, improve education, and increase jobs, ultimately providing greater opportunities for low-income populations.
