The 14 comfiest sandals, according to podiatrists and fashion experts | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

This article is part of Spring Fashion Month, where we’re breaking down your must-have fashion pieces for the next few months. From denim jackets to comfy sandals, we’re asking editors, influencers and experts about the go-to pieces they wear through spring and beyond.

It’s that time of the season when your favorite sandals are looking worn out and you’re ready for a new everyday pair. But let’s face it, the shoe department can feel like a reasoning and decision-making exam. Not only are you juggling price and size, but also the style versus comfort dilemma. Do you pick the fashionable pair that will reside in your closet forever? Or the comfortable pair you won’t be seen wearing outside the house?

When choosing a sandal, you want one that is both comfortable and fashionable. After all, nobody wants to stress about aching feet, chafing or blisters. So we consulted with fashion experts and podiatrists to find the best sandals for comfort and style enthusiasts alike.

Who doesn’t love this classic double-strap design? Dr. Elizabeth Daughtry, who specializes in podiatric medicine, loves the adjustable straps, cushioned suede footbed and especially the sole on this sandal. “The EVA sole is supportive and has an anatomic cork and latex footbed,” she says. “This allows for arch support and molding to the individual’s foot structure. EVA is an elastic material that is considered one of the best shock-absorbing materials on the market today.” The brand makes a style for men too.

Take everything great about the Santa Barbaras, but make them vegan! Whether you follow a vegan lifestyle or not, these slides are stylish, comfortable and supportive. Daughtry recommends them for travel because they’re light and easily packable.

As if the modern futuristic style isn’t enough, the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) actually gave this sandal their own Seal of Acceptance. “Aside from a cushiony sole, the bottom of the sandal is shaped like the bottom of a boat,” Dr. Sophia Solomon says. “This allows your foot to rock from heel to toe in one smooth motion and minimizes shock on the knees and ankles.”

According to Solomon, “Birkenstocks are still one of the best options out there due to a few attributes. The deep heel cup and arch support stabilizes the heel, prevents excess pronation and distributes your weight across a larger surface area. The metatarsal pad helps alleviate forefoot pain, or metatarsalgia, by shifting the weight further back in your foot.”

Ah, how we’ve loved the return of the Croc! Jane Francis, a multidisciplinary designer with 35 years of experience in the fashion industry, vouches for them too. “The mix of high and low is always a winning formula in fashion,” she says. “I love how wearers of all ages and genders can personalize their Crocs.”

These Oofos sandals have stuck around for good reason: For those with heel pain (and those without), the foam cushion provides support and reduces shock. Plus, the Ooriginal thong style, which is an Underscored editor favorite, is made with a nonslip footbed making them suitable for wet conditions. Rain or shine, you don’t need to worry about sliding around.

If you walk a lot and don’t want to trade style for comfort, check out these Cole Haan sandals. Walking long distances on New York City pavement is what led Carolina Obregón, a lecturer at the Parsons School of Design, to seek out these gems.
We have yet another Birkenstock recommendation, this time for the securely-fitting Milano model, which comes in plenty of solids and patterns. Stone Hubbard, footwear and accessories design technologist at the Fashion Institute of Technology, loves the suede cork base. “I like the Milano Birkenstock because they are stylish like the classic Arizona model and have an orthopedic cork and jute footbed,” he says. “They provide great arch support and fit securely with the back heel strap.”

Have you heard the term “gorpcorp“? It’s a trend that focuses on utility and functionality. For fashion, leather and textile expert Tjacob Hooker, who holds an MFA from the Fashion Institute of Technology, Chacos are the way to go. “I gravitate towards more ‘gorpcorp’ brands because of their respect for the human body,” he says. “Their design ethos is committed to ergonomics and continual use.”

How could something so fashionable be comfortable? These part-espadrille, part-wedge sandals are the lift you need to elevate any look. Obregón describes them as elegant enough for any occasion, but you can still walk for miles and miles.

If you’re looking for a sandal that can be easily dressed up, you’re going to want to check out the Naot Kayla style. It does have a small heel, but your feet won’t be aching. The cork and latex footbed conforms to your foot while the deep heel cup adds stability. According to Dr. Timothy Oldani, a foot and ankle specialist, stability is really important when considering a sandal. “The more stable, the less movement, which means less pain and opportunity for blisters,” he says.

This is considered a hiking shoe, but it’s just as stylish off the trail. Hooker loves the unibody style of this durable slip-on. For an environmentally conscious choice, there’s the vegan-friendly version called Hydro Moc with Bloom.

For fashion designer Alla Eizenberg, she loves the Sorel Kinetic Wedge Sandals for their neat look, reasonable price and high quality. “I wore them on my recent vacation to Italy and South France,” she says. “I walked around extensively and they endured the medieval cobblestone streets with grace.” The neon accent colors and chunky platform style make a remarkable team.

You can’t go wrong with this Nike staple. “The Jordan brand successfully straddles the line between fashion and function, loved by both athletes and the everyday consumer,” says Angela Finochio, a Fashion Institute of Technology classroom assistant. You’ll want to wear these sporty, lightweight sandals everywhere — if you aren’t already. “The rise of athleisure fashion increased the popularity of the slide silhouette, a casual style now found in many high fashion collections,” she says.

  • Editors’ picks: The best sandals under $100 that we actually wear and love | CNN Underscored

Editors’ picks: The best sandals under $100 that we actually wear and love | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

This article is part of Spring Fashion Month, where we’re breaking down your must-have fashion pieces for the next few months. From denim jackets to comfy sandals, we’re asking editors, influencers and experts about the go-to pieces they wear through spring and beyond.

Spring is synonymous with the ritual of tucking away those clunky boots and slipping back on those much cooler, cuter sandals. The problem with sandals though? They can be seriously painful for a while. That’s where we come in. With years of experience with blisters and bleeding come sandal season, our editors have found the comfiest, most versatile sandals under $100 on the market. See below for all our picks.

After getting into kayaking last summer, I absolutely adore my Tevas. I got the basic sandals, which don’t offer a ton of support but they’re super light and packable, comfortable and most importantly, actually stay on my feet when I’m swimming or wading through the mud to get to shore. — Kai Burkhardt, associate editor

I’ve never found a more comfortable sandal. These are made from real yoga mats so they’re extremely squishy and comfortable. The fabric straps don’t give me blisters and I can wear them for hours. They also last for years! I’ve had the same pair for over a decade and they’re still as comfortable as the first time I wore them. — Lindsey Smith, associate editor

I’ve had the same pair of Chacos for nine years. They’ve taken me on hikes, beach walks, city strolls and more, across the world. They’re sturdy, comfortable, waterproof and easy to clean. During the summertime, they’re my go-to activity sandal. The straps can take some time to adjust to your perfect fit, but once they do, your feet will be supported and ready for any terrain. Plus, they come in lots of colors and you’re likely to find a great deal! — Sophie Shaw, associate beauty editor

It may not be original, but I do love my Birks. And these Arizona Essentials made from waterproof EVA are both super comfortable and, well, purple. I can wear them to the beach, then pair them with a sundress for poolside cocktails. And, being a New Yorker, I can walk my many blocks with nary a blister. And though Birkenstocks can be pricey, especially now that there is a line to get into the Soho store every weekend, I was thrilled that they cost less than $50. — Tobey Grumet, reviews editor

I’ve been a Teva convert for the past six or so years and I don’t see that allegiance ending anytime soon. The Teva Original Universal Sandals have been a staple in my closet, helping me dress for a variety of occasions. Whether I’m on the beach, hiking with friends or dressing them up with a jumpsuit, these sandals have added comfort and color to my spring and summer wardrobes. With plenty of wear and tear on my current ones, these sandals are the durable and dependable footwear I go to when I’m looking for an efficient sandal that won’t hurt my feet. Plus, they’re lightweight and small enough to fit in my carry-on bags for quick trips or when I’m on the go. With plenty of color options and patterns available, I never get tired of their designs (and prices). — Madison Yerke, social strategist

My ride-or-die sandal, all year round. I can dress them up or down, depending on the occasion, and they’re surprisingly comfortable despite being a strappy sandal. I don’t think this shoe will ever go out of style. — Hayley Kinne, business development manager

These Teva x Cotopaxi sandals are everything and more. They somehow feel completely weightless on my feet, and I’ve taken them on several trips that were quite walking-heavy with no issues at all. Because of their adjustable strap and light foamy footbed, I refuse to wait for summer to wear them, so they’re my “slippers” indoors with socks when I’m working or walking around the house. Plus, their bright colorblock brings me so much joy. While this specific colorway is discontinued, they have plenty of other stunning models available. — Marissa Miller, contributing editor

I will say it up front: These slides are not cute. They are, however, the most comfortable sandals you will ever put on your feet. Oofos specially makes shoes for post-workout recovery — its proprietary OOfoam technology absorbs 37% more impact than traditional foam footwear. But they’re so delightfully supportive and squishy, that I throw them on even on days where I skipped the gym. After a few wears, looks suddenly don’t seem to matter much at all… — Chelsea Stone, senior editor

These Y2K-inspired Steve Madden sandals are a no-brainer if you’re looking for a quick and versatile option for the warmer months. They can be dressed up or down with equal ease, and they’re my go-to when I’m not sure how fancy or casual my destination is. The neutral color goes with basically everything, which is a definite perk when I don’t feel like thinking too hard about my outfit but still want to look put together. As for comfort, the stretchy fabric band on top hugs my foot snugly enough so that I don’t have to worry about them slipping off. The 2-inch platform is a nice bonus — that and the textured band on top elevates this pair beyond being a too-simple pair of slides (and of course, I’ll take any extra height where I can get it). — Morgan Pryor, Underscored intern

Despite what their name would lead you to believe, these Nike slides do not slide off your feet — believe me, I’ve tried. They’re made a bit narrow, which gives them that extra source of support that’s especially useful when wet. They have a contoured grippy footbed reminiscent of that of a running shoe so I can wear them for hours without any pain. I have a pretty high instep, but because the strap is lined with cushioning, I never get blisters at the tops of my feet despite extended wear. — Marissa Miller, contributing editor

These are by far my most worn sandal! They’re equal parts comfortable and chic, plus can be dressed up or down depending on my outfit. Living in the city, I walk everywhere — especially once the weather gets warm. I found these held up really well after a summer of frequent wear. For under $20, I may have to pick up a few more colors! — Julia Leinhauser, associate manager of affiliate partnerships

Let me add to the chorus of Teva love in here: They are fantastic. I could never find sandals that can withstand the beach, traveling through airports, walking miles through the streets of New York and everything in between … until I met these beautiful and colorful magical shoes. The midform is a bit higher than other Teva soles out there but not precariously so, and give just the right enough of height so I don’t feel like my toes are dangerously close to dirty sidewalks or subway platforms. I’ve had them for well over a year now, and they still look and feel just like they did out of the box. Plus I just love the metallic lilac, orange and light brown that serves as a perfect contrast to an all-black outfit or coordinates with whatever I’m wearing too. — Rachel Lubitz, senior lifestyle editor

Some things never change — the iconic navy and white striped Adidas slide is one of those things. This is actually my second pair (the first was a hand-me-down from my cousin that was about two sizes too big), but now that they fit me, it’s clear that these no-fuss slip-ons are classic for a reason. — Chelsea Stone, senior editor

These flip flops are a smart, minimalist option for a beach vacation, since they pack down flat and go with any outfit. They’re available in a ton of neutrals, whether you’re looking to match your summer tan or go for a nice complementary shade. — Caroline Curran, associate editor

  • The best women’s running shoes in 2023 | CNN Underscored

The best women’s running shoes in 2023 | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

Surprise: Women’s feet are not simply smaller versions of men’s feet. And yet running shoes have been, for the most part, designed around not just the geometry of a male foot but the biomechanics (or movement patterns) of male runners.

Anatomically, women generally have a wider forefoot and narrower heel than men (think triangular versus rectangular), and tend to have more of a height difference between their heel and forefoot. A woman’s weight is naturally distributed more toward the front of her body, and her feet are just slightly more likely to collapse inward.

These differences may not be noticeable to the average eye, but they’re there. And, over time, squashing a female foot into a male shoe can lead to decreased performance, discomfort and even injury. (FWIW, female runners were more likely to experience injuries than men, according to a 2021 scientific review published in the journal Physical Activity and Health.)

On the plus side, many women can comfortably wear running shoes designed around a male or unisex last. And for those who can’t, brands are (finally!) starting to research and develop sneakers specifically tailored to female runners. Whichever camp you fall into, one of these women’s running shoes — vetted by doctors, coaches and other experts — should help you run your best.

    Best lightweight shoe

For its first foray into footwear, Lululemon analyzed foot scans from more than a million women. The result: a neutral trainer with a wider forefoot to accommodate female geometry and more cushioning around and under the heel for comfort. “The Blissfeel is a good choice for women who want a cushioned, lightweight shoe for their daily runs,” says Maria Restrepo, an NASM-certified personal trainer and runner.

    Best for extra support

The Ultraboost has been a maximally cushioned staple for male and female runners going the distance since its debut in 2015. In reimagining the latest iteration, the designers went all in on gendered specificity, using data from over a million foot scans to create male and female lasts around which the new shoe is built. “The Ultraboost 22 has a narrow, S-curved heel and a low instep,” says Rami Hashish, Ph.D., a doctor of physical therapy and body performance and injury expert. Plus, he adds, there’s extra support on the inside of the outsole to help keep feet from rolling inward, which is more common among women.

    Best for added comfort

Puma considered insights from athletes like Olympian Molly Seidel as well as general consumers when crafting its female-specific running shoe. “The XX Nitro is made for ladies who prefer a steady and well-cushioned ride,” says Restrepo. “It’s excellent for people who overpronate and those searching for added comfort because of its responsive foam sole and supportive upper.”

    Best for off track

The Nike Invincible is packed with 37 millimeters of the brand’s lightest, softest and most responsive foam (the same one you’ll find in the brand’s highly hyped racing shoes). “The Invincible can be great for any runner who wants to simulate running on a softer surface on their easy days — and the responsive bounce can make you feel like you’re running faster,” says running coach Amie Dworecki. “These shoes provide a high level of support to help those who overpronate, plus they have a decent tread, so you can get a good grip if parts of your run take you on a dirt path.”

    Best for arch support

Under Armour also turned to 3D scans, customized lab testing and fit and wear tests in developing its new female-specific shoe, and zeroed in on women’s heels, arches and mid-foot heights. “The Under Armour Synchronicity is great for runners who need extra arch support,” says orthopedic surgeon Kellie K. Middleton. “This shoe is designed with a unique arch-stabilizing technology that helps to ensure a secure fit and improved shock absorption.” It’s also super lightweight and less cushioned, which makes it great for faster workouts.

    Best for wider feet

Brooks is the largest women’s performance running shoe brand, and the Ghost is its bestselling women’s running shoe. Though this shoe isn’t designed specifically around female anatomy, it is more accommodating for wider forefeet. And, it combines the brand’s softest cushioning in the midsole with a crash pad at the heel to help better absorb impact.

“With a 12-millimeter heel-to-toe gradient, this is a nice neutral, cushioned shoe for someone with a high arch,” says podiatrist Nelya Lobkova

    Best for flat feet

The Gel-Nimbus has been around forever, but it was one of Asics’ heavier, almost clunky styles. Not anymore. Just this year, the brand introduced a complete redesign of this classic shoe: “The Nimbus 25 is great for runners who prefer the comfort and cushioning of a neutral or mildly structured shoe for long or easy runs,” says Lalitha McSorley, a physical therapist at Brentwood Physiotherapy Calgary. “Runners who need a little extra stability and protection, such as those with flat feet or high arches, will benefit from the cushioning and support provided by this neutral shoe.”

    Best for cushioned support

Hoka’s Bondi line has the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) Seal of Acceptance, and “is known for its soft, cushioned ride and unique shape,” says podiatrist Jamila A. Butcher. “It’s a great option for runners who need a lot of cushioning and support.” The newest update uses softer, lighter foams and a brand-new extended heel geometry, which — combined with the wider base — helps guide feet seamlessly through the gait cycle without wasting any energy. It’s not a fast shoe, but it’s one that can really go the distance.

    Best for beginners

One of New Balance’s top women’s shoes, the Fresh Foam X 1080v12 isn’t gender-specific but delivers where female runners need it to. “These shoes are super light and comfortable, and an especially perfect fit for beginners,” says Olesia Stefanko, a Miami-based trainer and fitness program developer for HitFit. “A thick, stable platform protects the joints from negative running impact — without the feeling that you are on a pillow/mattress.”

    Best for speed

In updating the Ride 15, what Bell calls a Goldilocks shoe because “they’re not too soft but not too firm; not too cushioned but not too flat,” Saucony used new midsole foam that lends itself to a smoother running experience. It’s a little firmer than previous iterations, which allows runners to pick up the pace but still go the distance. The broader base makes for a very stable ride, while a slightly wider forefoot gives toes room to splay and a semi-rigid, padded heel counter keeps the foot in place. There’s also a lot more foam underfoot for soft, responsive cushioning.

The 22 best clogs for fall, according to fashion experts | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

There are few shoe choices that are as divisive as clogs. Like the Birkenstocks and Ugg boots that came before them, the similarly controversial shoe trend is back for fall 2022. Dries Van Noten, Celine and Hermès all showed clogs on their respective fall/winter 2022 runways, and like most fashion trends, they’ve already trickled down to stores — and celebrities, editors and influencers alike can’t stop wearing them. It makes sense. While the best clogs for fall may seem hard to style, the right style is really just a great, fashion-forward stand-in for sneakers. (Even more, they’re just as comfortable.)

Content creator and brand consultant Kellie Brown is a huge proponent of the trend, as she’s been known to pair clogs with everything from a knit cut-out dress to jeans and a tee. “I say style everything however you feel like it,” she says. “I’m into the unserious juxtaposition of a summery dress gaining a life extension via corky layers, clogs with cozy socks, a baseball hat and an overly fancy, chic tiny purse.”

She’s not the only one getting in on the trend. Ahead, the best clogs to shop for fall and beyond.

    $425 at Shopbop and Ssense

“I’m a sucker for anything Ganni does,” says Abby Price, founder of NYC pop-up-turned-brick-and-mortar store Abbode. “I love how these have the classic wood heel, but the silver adds an elevated detail to easily take them from work to dinner out.”

    $145 at Aerosoles

  • Allbirds’ new Mizzle releases are perfect for wet winter walks | CNN Underscored

Allbirds’ new Mizzle releases are perfect for wet winter walks | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

Allbirds’ sustainable shoes, whether you go for the wool version or eucalyptus, are made to be worn for leisure or working out, rain or sunshine. Its latest drop, officially out to shop today, is a trio of new Mizzle performance shoes made for all the grossness this season showers us with.

The new shoes are all made to get wet — and to keep you warm, dry and ventilated while you put in the miles on damp streets and soggy trails. Colorways are vibrant and cheerful; think bright teals, pinks, and more. Each style is made in both a men’s fit and a women’s fit, and they’re purpose-designed for trail-running or city streets, as you prefer.

Here’s the breakdown of the new styles:

Perfect for slippery runs, these super-tractioned running shoes are made for city streets and outdoor tracks. The PuddleGuard technology woven into these is ideal for keeping feet dry and cozy step after step.

These booties go a little higher than regular sneakers, making them a great pick if you want to protect your ankles against the cold and puddles, too.

Made with a bio-based SwiftFoam midsole, these shoes are made for distance running in less-than-perfect conditions.

Great for slippery leaf-strewn trails and outfitted with great grip and cushioning, the SWT Mizzles are all about performance for the toughest runs.

The big deal here is that these shoes are waterproof not because they’ve been doused in chemicals, but because the wool the shoes are made from naturally makes it so. Waterproofing agents are pretty terrible for the environment too, so there’s some bonus eco-cred to be had here. All in all, these are a win-win for your feet, the environment and your brand-new PR.

Shop the new releases over at Allbirds.com now.
