The best products we’ve tested in 2022 | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

Throughout the year, CNN Underscored is constantly testing products — from coffee makers to computers to sheets to shower heads — to help our readers find the absolute best things.

Our testing process is rigorous. We spend countless hours of research, consulting experts, reading editorial reviews and perusing user ratings to identify the products we want to bring in for testing, be they things that have stood the test of time or the most promising new contenders. Then we spend weeks or months testing and retesting each product multiple times in real-world settings, putting everything through the sort of use and abuse it’s likely to encounter in your home. The best yoga mat

Hands down our favorite feature of the mat is the fact that it’s dual-sided, with a smooth and sticky polyurethane-coated top side and a textured natural rubber bottom side that provides loads of traction. Beyond that, though, we also loved that the mat is slightly oversized and provides ample cushion given its 5-millimeter thickness.

The best headphones for running and outdoor workouts

    The best cast-iron skillet

The Lodge Chef Collection 12-Inch Skillet rose to the top of our rankings for not only delivering great results across all of our testing criteria but also for its affordable price. Weighing just 6.5 pounds, the Chef Collection comes pre-seasoned with 100% natural vegetable oil and has two slightly larger pour spouts that allowed us to deftly remove oil from the pan without a dribble in sight. It outperformed most of its much higher-priced competitors at nearly every test we threw at it.

    The best bread machine

The Zojirushi Virtuoso Plus is expensive for sure, but in this case, you get what you pay for. Plus, it’s beautiful enough to earn a permanent spot on your kitchen countertop.

The Lodge Enameled 6-Quart Cast-Iron Dutch Oven’s shiny, smooth finish had zero flaws out of the box, and the ombre blue hue was just plain pretty. Its 6-quart size was just right for all sorts of tasks. Its large handles and the lid’s amply sized metal knob are both features that make using a heavy pan easier. And its slightly sloped sides allowed a spatula to scrape up everything along the edges.

    The best charcoal grill

The 22-inch Weber was the easiest to control temperature on during our testing, making it easy to cook hamburgers medium rare and juicy chicken with a solid sear. The large enclosed ash pan makes for easy cleanup, and it also boasts a built-in thermometer and lid hook.

Simplicity and reliability is what you’ll get with this scale. It can measure grams, pounds, ounces and milliliters, all the way up to 11.24 pounds. The attractive Willams-Sonoma has a true non-stick coating, the heft to avoid warping even at high temperatures and is dishwasher safe for easy cleanup.

    The best sleep mask

Our favorite thing about this mask is its adjustable nose wire, which lets you get the perfect light-blocking, lock-in-place fit. Many masks we tested had a slight crack of light around the nose bridge. This mask, though, formed the best seal around the edges, blocking out more light than any other mask we tested.

    The best down comforter

With the Brooklinen Down Comforter, we truly felt like we were sleeping on a cloud and never wanted to get out of bed. Between the softness of the outer material and the fluffiness of the fill, it’s one of those comforters that make you want to stay in bed all day, 12 months a year.

    The best duvet cover

Made from crisp, luxe percale, the Brooklinen Classic Duvet Cover is light and airy, with large, easy-to-fasten buttons, and comes in tons of colors to suit any style.

The best pillow for back sleepers

The Eden pillow from Coop Home Goods is supportive and plush, and lets you adjust its fill to accommodate your preferences for height and firmness, making it the best, most versatile pillow we tested.

    The best down alternative pillow

The Parachute down alternative pillow has a soft and squishy fill that never got lumpy, even after multiple nights of sleeping and washing. We found the medium firmness pillow soft and supportive for both back and side sleeping, and firmer and softer versions are available for those needing more or less support.

    The best down pillow

The plush, cloud-like Garnet Hill Heirloom pillow is 100% down, making for a silent and extra-comfortable sleeping experience. Unlike some other down pillows we tested, it keeps its shape through the night, with no flattening, and it comes in soft, medium and firm densities to suit your needs for support.

    The best cooling percale sheets

The crispest set we tested, Casper’s percale sheets were the best we tried for hot sleepers. They are light and airy while wicking away sweat, and feel ultra-smooth to slip into at night.

    The best gauzy percale sheets

Brooklinen’s gauzy percale material manages to be softer than others we tried, while still effectively cooling. Available in more fun patterns and colors than any other set we tried, they’re ideal for people tired of neutrals or wanting to take their bedroom decor up a notch.

    The best overall flannel sheets

Luxurious without feeling overly thick or too weighty, Garnet Hill offers a delectably comfortable flannel sheet at a mid- to high-end price point, starting at $197 for a queen set (which includes two pillowcases, a fitted sheet and a flat sheet). These flannels come in lots of varieties of color and size, and instill confidence you’re getting a quality product that’ll last for years to come.

    The best lightweight flannel sheets

Very close to our overall favorite because it is both supremely cozy and the most lightweight of all the sets we tested is West Elm’s organic flannel sheet, which starts at $135 for a full set. These sheets didn’t come out on top because they’re available in only two colors and cannot be ordered à la carte like Garnet Hill’s sheets.

    The best flannel sheets

Luxurious without feeling overly thick or too weighty, Garnet Hill offers a delectably comfortable flannel sheet at a mid- to high-end price point, from $197 for a Queen set (which includes two pillowcases, a fitted sheet and a flat sheet). These flannels come in lots of varieties of color and size, and instill confidence you’re getting a quality product that’ll last for years to come.

    The best linen sheets

Well made, luxurious to the touch and with the most versatile shopping options (six sizes, nine colors and the ability to order individual sheets), these linen sheets from Parachute were, by a narrow margin, our favorite set. From the satisfying unboxing to a sumptuous sleep, with a la carte availability, Parachute set the gold standard in linen luxury.

    The best silk pillowcase

Fishers Finery — made from the finest silk available — felt luxuriously silky, fit our pillows perfectly, offered beautiful nights of sleep and were easy to wash and dry both by hand and in the machine.

    The best alarm clock

The Jall Wooden Digital Alarm Clock looks great and has everything you need in an alarm clock. It’s simple to set, read and use, and can wake you dependably with multiple alarms.

    The best white noise machine

The Sound+Sleep Mini contains 48 different sounds, like rain, brooks, fans, ocean sounds, white noise, and many more. The other devices we tested feature some of these soundscapes, but the Mini is one of the only ones that has them all.

    The best air mattress

In addition to providing the most comfortable night’s sleep during testing, the King Koil Luxury Air Mattress uses a built-in pump for quick and convenient inflation, and features a raised pillow that helps mimic the feel of a real bed.

The best pillow for stomach sleepers

The Saatva pillow was a favorite, supportive enough while squishy and malleable in the best way. The outer layer is filled with down-alternative fibers and a removable inner core made of shredded latex is completely encased so the fill doesn’t spill out.

The best pillow for side sleepers

The supportive Eli & Elm Side Sleeper pillow has a U-shaped cutout that makes room for your shoulder when sleeping on your side. It also cradled our necks well when we slept on our backs, so it’s great for anyone who shifts positions.

The luxury pick for smart TVs

The Sony A90J has the best picture quality we’ve ever tested, with superb detail and hyper accurate colors. It’s one of the brightest OLED TVs we’ve seen, supports all the standards videophiles demand and lets you access everything easily.

    The best smart electric toothbrush

The Oral-B iO Series 9 offers more features and modes than any electric toothbrush we tested, from multiple modes to suit any brushing goal to a connected app that really provides useful feedback. It’s pricey, but a 60-day guarantee makes it easy to see if it will work for you.

    The best smart bulb

The Wyze Bulb Color ticks all the boxes you want from a smart bulb, outpacing all other bulbs we tested — no matter their price point. If you prefer a white light, you have the option to adjust the temperature, changing the resulting light from warmer, orange glows to cooler, more natural white light.

    The best smart display

The Echo Show 8 is the best smart display we tested, with a versatile 8-inch screen in a build that really fits anywhere. It can do everything you’d expect from a smart display, and Alexa can respond to your queries both vocally and visually.

The best smart garage door opener controller

The Chamberlain MyQ can manage up to two garage doors, and the wireless hub makes it easy to install. With a price tag of only $29.99, it’s also an excellent value for a basic smart garage controller.

    The best smart plug

The Wyze Plug has everything a smart plug needs —- a plug to go into your current outlet, an outlet on the front to plug other devices in and connectivity to make it controllable —- and excels at the overall experience.

    The best smart thermostat

The Nest Learning Thermostat studies your habits and controls the temperature in your home automatically. These smarts, along with the simple interface, make it best in class.

    The best smart speaker

Amazon’s fourth-gen Echo is the biggest redesign to the original smart speaker; Amazon swapped the tall cylinder design for a spherical one. Not only does this give it a more appealing aesthetic than most competing speakers, but the form factor also aids in delivering richer and clearer sound with ample access to Alexa smarts.

    The best LED light strips

The Govee Wi-Fi RGBIC Strip Lights perform brilliantly and give you longer lengths and more coverage for less money than the competition. The easy-to-use app lets you create warm ambiances and color-changing special effects for entertaining or everyday use.

    Smartphones and smartwatches

If you own a Pixel phone or want a smartwatch with the full fitness capabilities of a Fitbit, the Pixel Watch is for you. Just note that its battery life falls behind the Apple Watch and Galaxy Watch.

The best smartwatch for Apple users

The Apple Watch Series 8 is the new Apple smartwatch to get for first-time buyers or anyone coming from a Series 4 or older. Everyone else can hold out for a more meaningful upgrade.

The ultimate smartwatch for those willing to splurge

If you’re a serious athlete or adventurer — or simply willing to pay up for the most advanced Apple Watch experience out there — the Apple Watch Ultra is worth the money. For everyone else, the Apple Watch Series 8 remains a great pick.

    The best Android smartphone

If you prefer Android, then the Galaxy S22 (or the larger S22+) is the way to go. These phones offer beautiful displays, long battery life, superb cameras and some of the best performance we’ve ever gotten out of a smartphone. Plus, these phones look great, with a glass-and-metal build that comes in four attractive colors.

    An excellent sub-$500 smartphone

If you’re looking to spend less than $500 on an Android phone, it doesn’t get much better than the Google Pixel 6a.

With access to Amazon’s vast library, a display that’s adjustable enough to let you read without fatigue in almost any light, easy-to-use controls and a comfortable design, the Kindle Oasis is the best e-reader we’ve tested. While you don’t technically need an Amazon account to use the Kindle Oasis, you’ll probably want to register in order to have access to the millions of Kindle books available from the Kindle library.

    The best hard-shell carry-on luggage

The Away Carry-On has thoughtful organization, smart features and chic design, all at a fair price. It’s durable too, standing up to our abuse and featuring smooth YKK zippers, an aluminum telescopic handle and four easy-glide double Hinomoto spinner wheels.

    The best portable charger

The Anker PowerCore 13000 packs a ton of value. You can quickly charge a lot with the PowerCore 13000; it can bring an iPhone 11 to full charge two and a half times, or two Samsung Galaxy S20s from empty to more than 90%. And you won’t be sitting by idly for too long, either, as the PowerCore 13000 takes just 41 minutes to charge an iPhone 11 to 50%, tying for fastest charging in our testing.

    The best travel pillow

The Cabeau Evolution S3 updates the standard U-shaped travel pillow design with raised sides that gently cradled our head and neck when we used it. The S3’s flat back also rested relatively flush against our seat, preventing our head from uncomfortably jutting forward, while an adjustable front clasp let us slightly tighten or loosen the neck opening to our liking, which makes it possible to tailor the pillow to travelers of different sizes.

    The best dash cam

A dual-channel camera that includes front and rear video cameras, this Nextbase unit was the easiest to use and delivered the most impressive image quality in our testing.

    The best screenless dash cam

Designed for maximum portability, this 4-pound RTIC soft cooler features multiple convenient carrying options and a heavy-duty nylon shell is durable enough for any outdoor adventure.

    The best robot vacuum

The iRobot j7+ is the best robot vacuum you can buy right now. It beat out all the others in mapping, creating virtual boundaries and detecting and avoiding obstacles, which means it’s the best “set it and forget it” smart robot vacuum — and it even empties itself. More importantly, it picks up dust and debris and cat litter from hardwood floors and low-pile carpeting better than the others we tested.

    The best affordable robot vacuum

The Eufy 11s may not be smart, but its brute force approach covered our test area almost as well as the connected robots, plus it’s quiet, slim enough to reach under most furniture and does a great job cleaning.

The budget-priced iLife V3S Pro uses a suction tube like a traditional vacuum cleaner rather than the roller brushes employed by other robot vacuums, and does a better job picking up pet hair without clogging.

The best value self-emptying robot vacuum

If you want the convenience of a self-emptying vacuum but want to save a couple of hundred dollars over an iRobot or Samsung, the Shark IQ XL cleans and performs almost as well for a lot less.

The best luxury robot vacuum and mop combo

The Ecovacs Deebot X1 Omni offers the best hands-off cleaning experience and fast and accurate mapping, and won’t mop your carpeting. The cleaning station empties the robot’s dustbin, cleans its mop and refills the water tank.

    The best canister vacuum

The Miele Classic C1 Turbo Team PowerLine is a powerful, maneuverable and built-to-last canister vacuum. It has six suction speeds and is great to use on hard floors and upholstery. Its suction-powered turbo brush is also excellent for dislodging hair and dust out of low-pile carpets and rugs.

    The best upright vacuum

With great cleaning power and maneuverability, the Shark Rotator Professional Lift-Away NV501 was a standout in all of our testing. It was one of the easiest vacuum cleaners to maneuver, thanks to its swivel head and fairly light weight. It comes with an upholstery tool, a dusting brush and a crevice tool, which all worked well. An extra bonus was how neatly the attachments fit onto the machine. They’re easy to grab and remove, and they don’t get in the way when you’re using other features.

The best cordless stick vacuum for pet hair and deep carpet

With impressive power and the ability to tackle cleaning tasks on surfaces ranging from high-pile carpet to hard floors, the Dyson V11 Animal is the most capable cordless stick vacuum we tested.

    The best smart TV

No matter what content you’re watching, the 55-inch TCL 6-Series TV makes it look good. It zooms past the 5-Series with better color accuracy and holds up better at various viewing angles. The 6-Series features Mini LEDs, meaning it packs more LEDs behind the panel to allow the TV to illuminate more specific details when creating an image. The result is a strong image with vibrant colors and strong contrast points.

    The best streaming device

The Roku Ultra is fast, responsive, delivers the widest variety of streaming services through up-to-date apps and lets you find everything easily with universal search, for a reasonable price.

A great smart home hub with OK picture quality

The best wireless charger for iPhone 12 and 13

The iPhone 12 and 13 can charge twice as fast via MagSafe as they can over standard wireless charging, and the magnets built into the phones and charger ensure perfect alignment every time. Too bad the cable’s so short, though.

    The best budget tablet

The latest Amazon Fire 7 tablet is a great and affordable option for kids or anyone who just wants a basic device for reading and watching shows. It’s also an ideal content consumption device for younger kids, when you need an extra device in the house or when you’re taking a car trip or vacation.

    The best Android tablet

The Galaxy Tab S8+ impresses with a vibrant, clear display that’s great for play and has plenty of power for nearly any task. It’s perfect for using as a secondary computer — that is, a tool for drawing, video calls and responding to emails or Slack messages.

    The best basic phone charger

If you’re looking for a compact charger with modern fast-charging support to go with a new phone that ships without one, the PowerPort Nano Pro 511 does a great job at an affordable price.

The compact, portable K380 offers a typing experience that compares to keyboards twice its price, plus two years of battery life and pairing with three devices.

    The best budget app

    The best computer microphone

The Yeti consistently delivered warm, bright voice recordings, preserving every detail of our voice without any distortion or crackling. It sounded nearly identical to its more expensive sibling (the $169 Yeti X, which offers more sound customization and LED lighting), and was richer and crisper sounding than premium rivals like the HyperX QuadCast S.

    The best computer monitor

After many hours of testing with a multitude of content and workflows, the 23.8-inch L24q-30 monitor stood out The super-slim bezels don’t distract the eye from its vibrant panel, and the small footprint will fit into any workspace. The best computer speakers

The Logitech Z407 computer speakers leverage the company’s years of experience in building computer peripherals, delivering a versatile, high-quality pair of speakers that doesn’t break the bank. Perhaps the best thing about these speakers is how great they sound for the price, boasting relatively crisp highs with a well-tuned mid range.

    The best ergonomic keyboard

We found the Logitech Ergo K860’s wave-like split keyboard to be phenomenally comfortable. It allows your shoulders and hands to rest in a more natural position. Add the cozy palm rest along the bottom edge and you’ll find yourself sitting pretty comfortably.

17 of our favorite travel mugs | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

Those who commute to work or spend a lot of time on the road will agree that the best travel mugs are worth their weight in gold. But what exactly makes a “good” travel mug? And how can you pick from the hundreds of options out there?

The best travel mugs serve multiple purposes and are sturdy enough for daily use. When looking for a mug for your travels, you should prioritize ones with one-hand usability and pay attention to whether you can throw it in the dishwasher. For warm coffees or teas, heat retention is a must. Likewise, if you’re more of a cold drink person, find a mug that’ll keep your beverages ice cold for hours.

Before you choose a travel mug for your most important drink of the day, read on to learn which ones we recommend.

    $42 at Amazon and Yeti

Yeti’s Rambler Travel Mug holds 30 ounces and comes in 12 different colors, including black, seafoam and harvest red. This mug stands out for many reasons, including its leakproof lid that uses dual-slider magnet technology to stay in place. The lid also rotates with ease, making this mug perfect for right-handed or left-handed drivers. Plus, like all other Yeti products, this travel mug prioritizes heat retention (and cold), thanks to its incredible insulation.

Everything you need to sleep better on an overnight flight | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

Long-haul flights can feel neverending, particularly if you don’t get any sleep. If you’re like us, you wind up completely despondent at some point during your journey. Counting down the hours or minutes until you can finally get some relief off the plane becomes an obsession. And, even if you do manage to get some rest, sitting upright in close quarters can wreak havoc on your neck and back.

Frequent travelers will agree that sleeping upright is no easy task. But, add into the equation that you’re on a tube flying about 500 miles per hour, 35,000 feet above the ground with the hum of an engine in your ear, and sleeping on a plane can be impossible for some.

When it comes to getting better sleep on a plane, it ultimately comes down to two factors: the mindset you’re in and the steps you take to prepare yourself for the long journey ahead combined with the travel products you have with you. We talked with experts to find out all of the best products and tips to help you sleep better on your next long-haul flight.

First, the products you have with you can make all of the difference. Whether they help with a firm place to rest your head or an eyemask to block out the overhead light of the passenger in front of you, what you have with you matters.

    $35 $30 at Amazon

Don’t be afraid to bring your own cozy blanket and pillow on your next long flight. Just make sure you have a set that won’t take up too much space in your carry-on luggage.

The EverSnug Travel Blanket and Pillow works great for long flights because it’s lightweight and dual-purpose. You can leave it in its case for use as a comfy pillow, but you can also unzip your EverSnug to use the plush 65-inch by 40-inch blanket inside. This product is not only affordable, but it’s perfect for those times you may need a pillow or a blanket but not both.

Imily Bela Women’s Knitted Wrap Cardigan

Travel advisor Nicole LeBlanc of Mon Voyage Travel says she always gets on a plane wearing long, loose-knit clothing akin to wearing a nightgown. Then, layer up with this cozy travel cardigan from Imily Bela, which can give you an extra layer of comfort during overnight flights. Not only is this cardigan machine washable, but it’s less than $50 on Amazon when on sale and comes in 17 different colors.

    $30 at Amazon

    Travelrest Ultimate Travel Pillow

LeBlanc also recommends the Travelrest Ultimate Pillow for superior comfort when you’re trying to sleep upright. This travel pillow is uniquely shaped to provide support whether your seat is on the aisle, next to the window or even if you’re in the dreaded middle seat.

“I can’t explain how this bizarre comma and banana shape works better for me, but I love it,” LeBlanc says. “It’s easily stored when deflated, rolling up like a croissant.”

Other sleep masks to try include the Mulberry Silk Sleep Mask from Brooklinen or the Cotton Sleep Eye Mask from Mavogel, which topped our list of the best sleep masks of 2022.

    $40 at Amazon

    cross country road trip cabeau

LifeStraw Peak Series Collapsible Squeeze Water Bottle

There’s nothing worse than feeling dehydrated several hours into your long-haul flight. Instead of hoping for a flight attendant to come around with water, it makes sense to have your own water bottle along for the ride.

This collapsible water bottle from LifeStraw is excellent for travelers. In our testing, we found that the collapsible nature of the bottle is great for storing in your travel backpack or another carry-on bag. Once you’re through airport security, fill up the bottle and stay hydrated during your travels. Plus, it’s got a filter to ensure you’re drinking clean water.

    Huzi Infinity Pillow

Derek Hales has been testing sleep-related products for his company NapLab since 2014. He swears by a good travel pillow for getting better sleep on a long flight, adding that his favorite is the Huzi Infinity pillow.

“The pillow wraps around your neck and is adjustable, allowing you to get the right support where you need it,” he says.

The pillow is made of soft bamboo fabric and layers of microfiber, so it’s more breathable than cotton. Better yet, caring for the pillow is easy — it’s machine washable. It also comes in eight different colors, so you can find the perfect one to match your carry-on bag.

    $329 $249 at Amazon

    Bose QuietComfort 45 Noise-Canceling Headphones

Noise-canceling headphones can make all the difference in creating a good sleeping environment while you’re on a flight. Hales adds that his favorite noise-canceling headphones are the Bose QuietComfort 45, which he’s been using since 2016.

“They are incredibly well built, high performance, and compact for easy travel,” he says.

    $17 at Amazon

Alpine FlyFit Airplane Pressure Relief Earplugs

If you’re not in the mood to spend hundreds on noise-canceling headphones, you can still get some protection from plane noises with a good set of earplugs. Alpine FlyFit Airplane Pressure Relief Earplugs are less than $20 on Amazon, and they block out noises while also preventing ear pain while in the air. They’re made of reusable hypoallergenic material that are designed to fit in your ear canal. Pair them with a comfortable neck pillow, and your sleeping situation is sure to be immediately improved.

    $348 at Amazon

    Sony WH-1000XM4

In our testing, this set from Sony won the title of the best overall noise-canceling headphones. That is thanks to their class-leading sound and phenomenal noise-canceling ability. So if you’re trying to down out the crying baby three rows ahead or the loud conversation happening the row behind you, you’re in good hands with these headphones.

“I was skeptical at first, but the device actually fits under the seat as long as you’re not storing a large item under the seat,” she says.

Zaytseva adds that this one product has single-handedly improved her flying experience in economy more than anything else. When in use, it’s made to feel like you’re seated in a recliner with your feet resting on pillows, offering lower back support and preventing swelling and stiffness.

Not only can adults use this inflatable footrest, but it could be the perfect addition if you’re traveling with kids. The footrest fills the gap between two seats, allowing children to lay flat. Better sleep for them almost always means better sleep for you, and especially if you have a second for yourself.

It’s worth noting that some airlines don’t allow this product on their flights — Emirates, Virgin Atlantic, Air France and Qantas, among others. You’ll want to check to ensure your next long-haul carrier does allow this product before purchasing.

The best part? All the items in this amenity kit are TSA-compliant, so you can keep the whole kit in your backpack or carry-on bag.

“It keeps the blood circulating, which actually helps you sleep and reduces jet lag,” she says. “I was in total disbelief until I tried it myself, and now it has become a staple.”

While you can pick up compression socks almost anywhere, this three-pack from Bombas is made of extra durable yarn and comes in three different sizes and a few different colors and patterns.

While the travel products you have with you can help, sleep experts and researchers agree that your travel mindset and the steps you take the day of your flight can impact your experience more than anything else. If your goal is getting some shut-eye during a long-haul flight, consider these tips.

Arrive well-rested and don’t try to force it

Colin Espie, co-founder and chief scientist at Big Health and Professor of Sleep Medicine at the University of Oxford, says that you shouldn’t try to force yourself to sleep. Even though it may seem counterintuitive, it’s important to try and let yourself fall asleep naturally.

“Sleep is a natural biological process, and it is much easier to let your body naturally take over, which can be challenging when you’re uncomfortable,” he says.

Espie also adds that you’ll recover from sleep loss more quickly if you’re well-rested before you fly.

“If you start with a sleep debt, it could make you more prone to jet lag,” Espie says.

Being well-rested before you fly will ensure you’re fully aware and alert during the travel process, while also allowing yourself a better chance at getting sleep on the plane.

Sleep Medicine Specialist Dr. Peter Polos, who serves as an expert consultant for Sleep Number, says maintaining your normal bedtime ritual can also help you sleep on a plane. This tip will work best if you choose a flight itinerary that aligns with your regular sleeping habits. For example, choosing a transatlantic flight that departs at 7 pm might give you just enough time to eat something and get several hours of sleep on the plane before you arrive at your destination.

Not only do you want to try to sleep at the same times as you normally would, but Polos adds that shutting down electronics 60 minutes before sleep time to avoid blue light exposure from tablets and phones can help.

“Using these kinds of devices close to bedtime can inhibit melatonin release and delay sleep onset,” says Polos. “Instead, try relaxing or unwinding with music, reading or meditation before going to sleep.”

Similar to your sleep routine at home, you’ll want to be in the right mindset for sleep on a plane. Cutting out screens — yes, even the seatback entertainment screen — can help.

If you get the chance to select your own seat, Espie says you should be choosy when it comes to where you sit. Specifically, try to secure a seat away from busy areas on the plane, such as near the lavatories or other service areas where flight attendants may move around at all hours.

You should also try to select seats with extra legroom if you can, which can be difficult to know ahead of time. However, websites like SeatGuru can help. You can look up the type of plane assigned to your itinerary and see which seats might have a little more space and more room to recline.

Remember, too, that you may not be stuck with the seat you selected when you booked your flight. You can always keep an eye on the seating chart to see if something better opens up. Or, you can use various online tools to see how available seats change as your trip approaches. ExpertFlyer even lets you set up free seat alerts to notify you when the seat you want becomes available.

If you’re currently stuck in a middle seat on an overnight itinerary, moving to an aisle or a window ahead of time can make a big difference.

Polos knows that many frequent flyers like to bring travel snacks along, especially on long flights. However, snacks with sugar and substances like caffeine, chocolate and alcohol can all affect sleep.

While it’s common knowledge that caffeine keeps some people from falling asleep, alcohol may help you fall asleep initially, which can be confusing. However, Polos says alcohol can have a negative effect on sleep architecture and sleep cycles, even if it helps with the onset of sleep. Swap that glass of wine for water, or consider a cup of peppermint tea to soothe the senses as you prepare to drift off to sleep.

It’s also worth noting that meals with excessive amounts of fat can lead to abnormal sleep breathing patterns and other side effects. As a result, Polos says you should skip the extra plane snacks before bed.

Ultimately, sleeping on a plane doesn’t have to be as dreadfully bad as it may seem. If you come prepared in the right mindset and with the right tools, catching some Zs in the air may be easier than you think.

Checking a bag can often make air travel more complicated than it needs to be. When you check a suitcase, you’re also opening the door to an array of potential mishaps, delays and issues — think lost bags, damaged suitcases and waiting 30 minutes by the baggage carousel for your luggage to come out. While there are some tools to make checking a suitcase less stressful (hello, AirTags!), if you’ve got a choice, you’ll probably want to stick to a carry-on bag.

Fortunately, there are plenty of strategies you can use to avoid checking a bag for a trip of nearly any length. From rolling your clothing to carrying a backpack for your extra belongings or booking a place with a washer so you can refresh your clothing while you’re away, traveling with just a carry-on bag is possible.

The best dash cams in 2022 | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

A dash cam is something you hope you won’t need, but if you do, you’ll likely be glad you have it. These compact cameras record the road ahead (or behind), and in the event of a collision, can provide video evidence for other drivers, police and insurance companies.

There are many types of dash cams and camera systems available, from simple forward-facing cameras to dual cameras aimed at rideshare drivers; you can find both with and without built-in-displays and with or without onboard navigation systems.

To help you figure out the best solution for your driving needs, we sourced ten popular models, installed them in our car and evaluated them on ease of installation, image quality, playback functionality and overall usability. After comparing all our testing and research data, we landed on these two options as the best overall.

    The best dash cam overall

A dual-channel camera that includes front and rear video cameras, this Nextbase unit was the easiest to use and delivered the most impressive image quality in our testing

    The best screenless dash cam

Although it doesn’t have a screen, the budget-friendly Scosche camera has by far the easiest mobile app to use, and promises quick and easy video playback whenever you need it.

    Alex Rennie/CNN Underscored

If you’re looking for a high-quality dash cam that provides both front and rear coverage, is reasonably easy to use and won’t take up too much windshield real estate, this Nextbase model is a great choice. Although I had positive experiences with other Nextbase models I tested, the Nextbase 322 strikes a practical balance between the more full-featured $500 Nextbase 622 and its compact but connectivity-impaired sibling, the Nextbase 222.

Installation was a breeze with the Nextbase 322, and mounting and connecting the rear camera to my back windshield was easier than I expected. A supplied little plastic crowbar helped to slip the wiring behind my interior panels. Unlike some other cameras that were a hassle to remove from their mounts, the Nextbase 322 connects to the “Click & Go” mount via a magnetic dock, making it really easy to remove whenever you like.

The touchscreen controls walk you through the initial setup process (much smoother than scrolling through options with push-button controls as on some competitors’ cameras) and made on-camera playback fairly simple as well. I really appreciated the 2.5-inch size of the screen, which is small enough to not be too distracting while driving, but large enough to easily locate, select and view individual video clips without dealing with the app.

I’ll be honest, using the Nextbase mobile app (no subscription required) was a bit frustrating at first, and requires you to re-connect to the Wi-Fi whenever you open it, but I found that to be par for the course with most dashcam apps (apart from the superior Scosche app). Once you’re connected, the app is convenient to use, and thanks to the GPS capabilities of the Nextbase 322, each video file is accompanied by a real-time map (viewable in a separate window within the app, or as coordinates in a caption if you download the video) of your route, complete with your current speed (in MPH or KPH), providing a clear and reasonably comprehensive record of where you were and how you were driving in the case of any traffic incident you may need to document

The overall quality of the video and audio footage is crisp and clear; the 322GW records at 1080p in the front and 720p in the rear when recording simultaneously. You can also zoom in on the footage as it plays, a nice feature if you’re looking for specific details in an image.

Unfortunately, the Nextbase video player desktop app (available for Windows or MacOS) is a bit lacking, and although it allows you to play and zoom in on your footage on a bigger screen, its buggy interface sometimes refuses to recognize any GPS data. Also, while nighttime footage is generally clear, as with other cameras, the reflection of my headlights and other light sources blew out bright areas and reflective surfaces, making it a challenge to see details like license plates and street signs. Since this effect seems to be an issue with night-vision mode on dashcams in general, I wouldn’t necessarily count it as a strike against the Nextbase 322.

A view from with a car equipped with a Scosche NEXS1 dash cam, mounted behind a car's mirror, a street scene is visible with the camera visible at upper right.

One of the most important things I discovered during my testing was that if you’re going to go with a screenless dashcam, the accompanying mobile app needs to work extremely well. The Scosche NEXS10032-ET app blew away the rest of the competition when it came to app functionality and overall usability. Why? Unlike the other cameras we tested, the Scosche NEXS10032-ET saves video files locally to your phone’s memory, so unlike the competition’s apps — which all required frequent Wi-Fi reconnections and multiple steps to download and view footage stored in the cloud — the Scosche app was always ready to play files instantly, wherever I was, without any waiting.

The 1080p video was nice and crisp, and the night footage was easy to make out as well. Thanks to the integrated GPS, the Scosche NEXS10032-ET also provides an overlay with a static map of your route with each file. You can’t track your position in real-time with the footage as you can within the Nextbase app, which would have been nice — it just displays a map of your completed route.

It’s important to note that local storage is great for immediate access, but is limited by your phone’s storage. You can select how much of your phone’s storage the Scosche is permitted to use (you are required to reserve at least 20% of the phone’s capacity for video, though you can push that to 50% or 70% if you feel like you’ll need it). Once you hit that limit, older files are deleted and replaced with newer ones. If you’d like to permanently save footage, you can either save the footage to your phone, email it to yourself or upload a clip to the Nexar cloud service (the Scoshe cameras use the Nexar cloud back end) — all simple processes done through the mobile app. Irregular road events like hard braking or collisions are automatically backed up to the cloud, which provides a mirror of your phone’s storage with no subscription required (cloud files are maintained so long as you keep them on your phone; if you delete them from the app, they’re deleted from the cloud backup as well).

There is a catch, however — footage saved to the cloud has the same 1080p quality as other options, but it isn’t full-motion video. Rather, it’s only available in time-lapse format, at 1 frame per second (this makes the files much smaller, but sacrifices details of fast motion). Full backups of your video files are also saved to the camera’s microSD card (a 32GB card is included, though the camera can use up to a 64GB card). When the card is full, the camera deletes older fields to make space for new. So, make sure to consider your phone’s available storage capacity when considering the Scosche NEXS10032-ET.

While installation was fairly simple and straightforward for all the cameras I tested, the Scosche NEXS10032-ET also took the top spot in this department. Its power cord, designed to be concealed behind the interior trim of your car, was designed with small rubber bumps placed roughly every 6 inches. These bumps prevent the cord from slipping back out during installation, a frustrating experience that required starting the process all over again with some of the competition.

A drawback to a screenless camera like this one is that if your phone battery dies, or is damaged in a crash, you won’t be able to view video immediately. In that case, you’ll need to remove the SD card and wait until you have access to a computer and video player, or (assuming the incident in question triggered an automatic upload) access the cloud footage through the Nexar web app online.

No, you don’t. Screenless cameras also tend to be smaller, and since you don’t really need to interact with them very much, you can position them behind the rear-view mirror, totally out of sight.

But, if you do go with a screenless camera, you need to understand that the only way to upload and view video footage is either through a mobile app, or by plugging the camera or its microSD card into your computer. So, if you do choose a screenless model, the mobile app needs to be reliable and easy to use.

If you want more playback options, and to avoid relying entirely on your phone (which could conceivably be damaged or lost in an accident), go with a camera that has a screen. Not only do screens allow you to quickly scroll through files and view playback, they’re also convenient for adjusting controls, like toggling the audio recording on and off or changing the length of loop recordings.

Plus, since the screen provides a live feed of the recording view, you can ensure that the lens is positioned and aimed correctly when you first install it and keep tabs on it over time. A screenless camera can possibly get bumped or shifted out of position, and you won’t know until reviewing footage. These screens do tend to take up more room on your windshield and can be more distracting (although some allow you to turn off the screen while driving) though, so keep that in mind.

If you do choose a camera with a screen, a touchscreen is worth considering. Unlike cameras that use push-button controls that require you to scroll through settings with arrow buttons, touchscreen models make it much easier to quickly access settings and playback options, providing an alternative to sometimes-cumbersome apps.

Dash cams with additional cameras (also called multi-channel dash cams) tend to cost more, but they can be worth it if you want to ensure you have a comprehensive recording of your car’s occupants or surroundings. Cameras mounted to the back window can capture rear-end collisions (which, according to the National Law Review, are the most frequent type of car crash), as well as incidents that occur when you’re not in the car. If you have a hard-wired camera that’s able to power on when it detects the motion of an accident, it can record the license plate of a car that accidentally backs into you in a parking lot or might be able to capture enough of a visual to track down a hit-and-run driver who hits your vehicle when it’s parked on the street.

In-cabin cameras are another option, and record what’s happening inside the car. These are probably going to be most useful to rideshare drivers who want to have proof of any incidents or issues that occur with (or involving) their passengers. Depending on how they’re positioned, in-cabin cameras can also potentially capture incidents through the side windows that front and rear cameras would not. Also an in-car recording could (at least theoretically; more on that below) come in handy if another driver or police officer accuses you of being on your phone during an accident or while driving.

It’s worth noting that additional cameras will fill up your SD card more quickly, and to compensate, even cameras advertised as featuring HD or higher-resolution video will typically reduce video quality to save space when using multiple cameras. For example, although the Vantrue N4 advertises a 4K front-facing camera, that will drop to 1440p when all three cameras are operating.

After my testing, as well as researching and interviewing car insurance and legal professionals, I would consider GPS capability to be the most important feature to look for in a dash cam. Since GPS-linked footage can provide a time-stamped record of your speed and the location of your car before, during and after a collision, you can provide a more comprehensive picture of any accident than with video alone.

That being said, the accuracy of speed data provided by your GPS may come under scrutiny in court, since many things can interfere with a device’s ability to receive precise GPS location data, and those can potentially affect the recorded speed. GPS devices are also not good at responding to fast accelerations and decelerations, or changes in direction.

Despite this issue, the general advice I received from insurance and legal professionals was this: The more information you can offer to prove you were in the right (or that another driver was at fault), the better — but to make your case, you’ll likely need a lawyer and perhaps experts well-versed in the workings of GPS and video technology to convince a judge.

A “parking mode” setting is another useful feature. Cameras with this feature will automatically power on when they sense an accident, ensuring that they capture footage of hit-and-run drivers. This feature is available on all the cameras we tested, although in every case you’ll need to provide a constant power supply to the camera, which requires purchasing and installing a hardwired connection to your car’s battery (none of the cameras we tested included a wiring kit as standard). If you park your car on the street at night, or at long-term airport parking, this could be a good investment.

Even for cameras with onboard screens, the ability to connect and review footage on a dedicated mobile app is very useful. This provides a backup playback option to your camera and allows you to view footage on a larger screen. Video files and trimmed clips can then be downloaded and shared with yourself or insurance companies, via email, before you even get home. Without an app, you’ll have to either rely on the camera screen or remove the SD card or camera from your car and upload the files to your computer for viewing.

Just be sure to carefully review how these apps store and delete footage. Some will automatically provide long-term storage, while others have a limited window to save footage before it’s deleted and require additional monthly subscriptions to extend the timeframe. Neither of our top picks require a subscription for long-term storage.

In the event you’re involved in a collision or other traffic incident, a dash cam can gather evidence that supports your account of events — but should you need to prove that in court or convince an insurer, it’s important to know that they’re not a magic bullet.

Even if you’re not at fault for a traffic incident, and have video footage and GPS data to back that up, when it comes right down to it, video recording will only be as helpful as your insurance company or the legal system you’re working within. Before you think about how you might use dash cam recordings, you’ll want to talk to a lawyer — as dash cam manufacturers recommend.

It is possible that having a video recording of an incident can speed up a claims process, or dissuade another driver from fighting you in court (although a very small percentage of traffic cases actually go in that direction) but they’re going to be best used if you — or your lawyer — are prepared to present and make use of video evidence in court.

As long as the footage can be authenticated that it came from your camera and has not been edited or altered, and clearly shows the incident in question, dash cam footage is nearly always admissable in court.

And finally, remember that dash cam footage can be used both ways. After being submitted to police or presented as evidence in traffic court, it could potentially end up incriminating you.

Legal relevance aside, many potential dashboard camera purchasers wonder what impact the devices might have on their insurance premiums. None of the major US insurance companies offer any kind of discount for having a dash cam. The only company that currently does, Branch Insurance, offers an 8% discount, but their limited coverage and negative reviews make them tough to recommend. That said, having a dash cam can help prevent your rates from going up after an accident, which could provide substantial savings in the long run. According to two 2021 studies by The Zebra, a no-fault accident will increase your annual rate by $67. An at-fault accident? $561.

    Alex Rennie/CNN Underscored

Considering that you’ll most likely be using it after a collision, when your adrenaline is pumping and your stress levels are high, it’s extremely important that your dash cam is easy to use. Taking the controls and playback functionality into account — whether that was on the camera itself or with a phone app — we judged each camera on how intuitive and straightforward it was to quickly and easily pull up and play footage.

While installing each unit in our car, we evaluated how easy this process was, as well as if there were any additional accessories that made installation more convenient. We also noted any differences in their power cords, like if they provided additional USB ports, which could be handy if you’re already using your 12V port for your phone power. We also noted whether or not the cameras could be easily removed from their windshield mounts.

We then drove our commute with each camera for two days, making sure to include night drives to judge their ability to capture footage in low-light conditions. We also evaluated how much space they took up on the windshield, and whether or not they were distracting or impaired our visibility.

We judged all available methods of video playback for each camera as well. We reviewed footage on camera screens, mobile apps and any video players that could be downloaded to our computer. We evaluated each camera’s image quality during both day and night drives, doing our best to judge their ability to provide the clarity needed to identify things like license plates and street signs. We also noted how much information was provided with the footage, like GPS-enabled speed and location data.

Finally, we took any additional features into account, like parking modes that automatically turn on the camera in the event of a hit-and-run, voice commands for hands-free use and whether or not you can zoom in during playback.

This three-channel model provides front, rear and cabin-facing cameras, giving you about as much as you can hope for in total video coverage. The best part of this camera is the fact that the resolution of the front camera is so high — 4K 2160p — that even after you connect the other two cameras, it only drops down to a still-impressive 1440p resolution. Unfortunately, the Vantrue N4 lacks a built-in GPS, and a separate mount must be ordered to add one. This means that, out of the box, your footage lacks a record of speed or location data. Plus the Vantrue N4 also cannot connect to the Vantrue phone app, limiting playback to either the camera itself or your computer.

Although this Vantrue model includes both a front and rear camera — a decent deal for under $200 — its strange, angled design and lack of Wi-Fi connectivity kept it firmly out of my top spot. Vantrue recommends that you mount it behind your rear-view mirror, which helps keep the bulky shape from cluttering up your windshield, but also means that you can’t really see the screen or use any controls unless you remove it from the mount. This would be less of a hassle if you could view footage and use the controls via the Vantrue phone app, but since the S1 lacks any Wi-Fi capabilities, you’re out of luck. It does have GPS though, so you will have speed and location data when viewing footage on the Vantrue Video Player on your computer.

The smallest camera with a screen that I tested, this 1 3/4-inch-square Vantrue model had a modern, minimal look, and took up almost no room on my windshield. This did make it difficult to make out any details while replaying footage on the tiny screen, though. Footage viewed on the Vantrue mobile app was crisp and clear, although the app did require me to connect and re-connect every time the car turned off, which wasn’t very convenient. It includes GPS, so the footage viewed on the phone app provides MPH speed and a real-time GPS map of your route during playback. It also includes a small remote that you can mount to your dash, which you can use to either take a quick photo or toggle the microphone on and off.

The ultra-low price of the no-frills Vantrue N1 Pro could make it an attractive option for some, but its lack of Wi-Fi and GPS significantly limits its functionality. You won’t be able to use it with a mobile app, and the compact, 1-by-1.25-inch screen makes video playback even less convenient. You’ll need to use the Vantrue Video Player on your computer to view the footage on a screen large enough to really make out details. Even then, the only additional data you’ll get is the date and time — no location data. It doesn’t exactly have the sleek, high-tech look of our other models, but if you’re on a budget, it could still be a fine option.

Another budget-friendly model, this Nextbase camera is the scaled-down version of our top pick, the Nextbase 322GW. It has close to the same image quality as its older sibling, with 1080p at 6 fps versus 1080p at 30 fps, and provides the same valuable “Parking Mode” feature. It has the same 2.5-inch screen too, but it uses push-button controls instead of a touchscreen. This wide screen is especially important because, with no Wi-Fi, the Nextbase 222 can’t connect to the Nextbase mobile app. If you’re looking for a dash cam with a screen for under $100, this is definitely the option we’d recommend.

    Nextbase 622GW

If price is no object, and your priority is maximum video coverage, this Nextbase dual-channel camera could be just what you’re looking for. The beefed-up older sibling of the Nextbase 322GW, this camera includes a front and rear camera, as well as a 128GB SD card, something not always included with a dash cam. Its 4K image quality is about as high as you’re going to find on any dash cam, and will allow you to make out more details in playback footage than any other model. We were especially impressed with the “enhanced” night vision capabilities, which made low-light footage crisp and clear, whether you’re watching on the camera screen, mobile app or the Nextbase Video Player on your computer.

    Garmin Tandem

This screenless Garmin camera provides both front- and cabin-facing cameras, but with a frustrating mobile app and no dedicated video player for your computer, its playback options are limited. Of course, just like any camera, you can simply remove the SD card and download footage to your computer that way, but for nearly $300, we expected a bit more functionality. Our biggest issue with this model was the fact that after 24 hours, unsaved files are deleted. This can be extended to seven days with a $5 monthly subscription, or 30 days for $10 per month, but considering the already-high price and the fact that no other cameras have this limitation, the extra cost might be a dealbreaker.

This tiny screenless camera is by far the smallest model I tested, and could be a suitable option if you want to ensure you have minimal distractions while driving. If you install the wires well, it could be completely hidden behind your rear-view mirror. The Garmin mobile app is used to adjust controls and play back video, but its frequent Wi-Fi connection issues and frustrating wait times spent sitting in your car waiting for files to download were the primary reason it wasn’t considered as a top pick. It also includes the same unfortunate 24-hour storage limitation as the Garmin Tandem. It does feature voice controls though, which are convenient for saving files or taking a photo while keeping your hands on the wheel.

What’s allowed in — and prohibited from — your carry-on bag, according to the TSA’s rules | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

Packing for a trip can be a daunting experience. You want to streamline your stuff so as to travel light, but you also don’t want to be so bare-bones that you wind up shopping for the essentials you forgot when you should be enjoying your trip.

Maximizing your carry-on baggage allowance is a great way to ensure you’re packing light without skimping on the things you actually need, but you’ll want to ensure you’re packing items that won’t get you held up at the TSA security checkpoint. There are certain TSA carry-on rules and regulations you’ll want to be aware of when packing your carry-on bag, such as how much liquid you can actually bring on board or if your disposable razor is allowed through.

If you’re hoping to optimize the way you pack your hand luggage, you’ll want to read on. We’ve outlined everything you need to know about what’s allowed in a carry-on bag — and the best carry-ons to consider for your next trip.

Carry-on luggage ranges in styles and sizes — from hard-shelled spinners to soft-sided weekender bags and even travel backpacks. But the bag will need to fit the size regulations of your airline. In fact, carry-on allowance isn’t determined by the TSA but instead by individual airlines. Generally speaking, most airlines implement a maximum size policy of 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches, including wheels and handles.

Your baggage allowance could also depend on your ticket type. Some basic economy tickets only allow for a personal item, such as a purse, rather than a piece of carry-on luggage. When it comes to the weight of the bag, you’ll want to ensure you can comfortably lift your carry-on up and into the overhead compartment efficiently. However, some airlines — particularly budget carriers — limit how much a bag can weigh.

Ultimately, if you’re planning to bring a carry-on bag on board, be sure to check your airline’s policies. Once you’ve determined your carry-on baggage allowance, you’ll then need to pack it with items that are permitted by the TSA.

If you want to avoid checked baggage fees, you can often get away with traveling with just a carry-on bag. Here are some of the most noteworthy items you can pack in your hand luggage without worrying about getting stopped at airport security. You can find the entire list of permitted items on the TSA’s website.

Alcoholic beverages are permitted in carry-on luggage as long as they are less than or equal to 3.4 ounces. Mini bottles of alcohol in your carry-on must also be able to comfortably fit into a single quart-sized bag. However, keep in mind that airline policies on alcohol are strict, and the FAA prohibits travelers from consuming alcohol on board an aircraft unless it was served by a flight attendant. In other words, the alcohol you can pack in your carry-on bag cannot be consumed on board.

    Baby food and equipment

Baby food, baby formula, breast milk and juice are all allowed in reasonable quantities. Formula, breast milk and juice should be removed from your bag and screened separately. Additionally, ice packs, freezer packs, frozen gel packs and other accessories required to cool formula, breast milk and juice are allowed in your carry-on. Additional items such as baby carriers and child car seats are also permitted so long as they’ll fit in the airplane’s overhead bin or underneath your seat.

Cooked meat, seafood, vegetables and other prepared foods

Cooked meat, seafood, vegetables and other prepared meals and dishes are permitted as long as they do not exceed the 3.4-ounce liquid limit. If you’re flying from Hawaii, Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands, note that most raw vegetables are not allowed into the U.S. mainland due to the risk of spreading invasive plant pests.

Disposable razors are permitted in carry-on luggage. However, loose razor blades, such as box cutters or those not in a cartridge, are not permitted in carry-on luggage.

Most personal electronics, such as hair care products or handheld devices, are permitted in carry-on bags. Adult toys are also permitted in hand luggage.

    Lighters and matches

Passengers are permitted to pack disposable lighters in their carry-on luggage. Additionally, one book of safety (non-strike anywhere) matches are permitted as carry-on items. However, strike-anywhere matches are prohibited.

Nonflammable liquids, gels and aerosols (such as shampoo or deodorant) are permitted in hand luggage as long as they follow the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule for liquids. This means that you can bring one quart-sized bag of liquids limited to travel-size containers that are 3.4 ounces or less per item.

The TSA allows larger amounts of medically necessary liquids, gels and aerosols, but you must declare them to the TSA officers at security and expect to be pulled for further inspection.

Power banks and portable chargers are only permitted in carry-on luggage. However, they must have a rating of 100 watt hours (Wh) per battery or less. You can bring two larger spare batteries (up to 160 Wh) if you have airline approval.

    Vitamins and supplements

FDA-approved vitamins and supplements are permitted in carry-on luggage.

    Getty Images

There are obvious no-fly items — like weapons and full water bottles — and then there are prohibited items that might surprise you. Here’s what you’ll want to pack in your checked luggage or leave at home entirely. You can find a full list of prohibited items on the TSA’s website.

    Self-defense items, ammunition and sharps

Self-defense items, including ammunition, are banned from carry-on luggage and in some cases from checked luggage as well. This also includes most martial arts equipment, pepper sprays, firearms, chef’s knives, corkscrews and other sharp items.

Flammable or explosive material such as fireworks, flares and replicas of explosive materials are strictly prohibited not just from hand luggage but also from checked baggage.

    Sporting goods and equipment

Certain large sporting goods and equipment, such as golf clubs or hockey sticks, are not allowed in carry-on luggage. However, basketballs, soccer balls and other small sporting goods are typically permitted.

Familiarizing yourself with what is — and isn’t — allowed in a carry-on bag is the first step to breezing through security, but you’ll also want to ensure your carry-on bag allows you to streamline your travel for a comfortable and stress-free trip. Here are some of our favorite carry-on bags that will make your trip that much more seamless.

    $275 at Away

    Away Carry-On

Away luggage has become a travel industry darling for its streamlined aesthetic and heavy-duty design at a fair price point. The rolling carry-on features the “Rolls-Royce of luggage wheels,” according to our testing. In fact, this bag earned the top spot in our books for the best overall hard-shell carry-on luggage.

    $299.99 at Amazon

    underscored delsey carry on

    Amazon

The Delsey Paris Hardside collection was our runner-up choice for best hard-shell luggage, thanks to its chic design and affordable price point. The elegant carry-on might look delicate and sophisticated, but this hard-shell spinner can take a beating. We’ve dragged this carry-on through international budget airlines and domestic flights alike, and it’s held up extremely well throughout.

    $139.99 $79.93 at Amazon

American Tourister Belle Voyage Hardside Luggage

Looking for a basic design that will hold up for the long run? The American Tourister Belle Voyage Hardside Luggage offers a lightweight design that affords ample packing space. The featherlight design also comes with four multidirectional oversized spinner wheels that will make racing through the airport a breeze.

    $89 at Amazon

    Amazon Basics 21-Inch Hardside Spinner

The Amazon Basics 21-Inch Hardside Spinner offers surprising longevity given the budget-friendly price point, but it may be a struggle for those looking for a carry-on with ample room and organizational pockets. The basic design is aesthetically pleasing enough, but you’ll want to avoid checking this bag at all costs. We found that the ABS shell is prone to scuffs and scratches.

    $98 at Beis

    Beis Weekender

If you’re in the market for a weekender bag for storing all of your carry-on essentials, Beis’ The Weekender bag is a good option. Not only does it have a separate shoe compartment, but it also has the versatility to be carried any number of ways — by handles, shoulder strap and a zippered pocket that can become a trolley sleeve.

Easily keep track of your suitcase with these 26 versatile luggage tags | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

These days, you can walk through the airport and see dozens of pieces of luggage that look similar — or even identical. And when it comes to telling yours apart from other travelers, a simple luggage tag can play a huge role.

The main purpose of luggage tags is to keep your suitcase safe and ensure it makes its way back to you if lost. Luggage tags protect your belongings and help airport staff and everyone else know that your bag is yours.

Luggage tags are a practical item that should be durable enough to withhold wear and tear as your bag gets shoved into overhead bins, tossed onto baggage claim belts by airport handlers or shoved in the trunk of a car. But durability aside, luggage tags should also be stylish and match the theme of your luggage whenever possible. They can help a basic black bag stand out with a cute, colorful pattern or even feature smart tracking capabilities.

When selecting a luggage tag, keep style and durability in mind. Consider how easy the tag is to see, if it can be easily secured to your bag and that it stays firmly attached so it won’t fall off. Aim for a print, color or pattern that perfectly fits your personality and your favorite suitcase. Business travelers may want something more muted, while leisure travelers might prefer to go bold. And a colorful, bright tag isn’t a bad idea even for the most refined of travelers — it can ensure your bag will stand out from all the others on the baggage carousel.

Whether it’s luxury leather, “Harry Potter”-patterned or water-resistant neoprene, here are some of our favorite luggage tags you can buy ahead of your next vacation.

Regardless of color, the leather tag comes complete with a buckle closure so it’ll stay secure throughout your travels.

    $80 at Rimowa

Check out our rating of the best pillows for 2022.

But, which hotel pillows can you get to furnish your own home? And where can you buy them? From the fluffy hotel pillows found at Westin to Aria’s famous feather pillows, here are some of the most amazing options you can purchase for your own home.

The Fairmont Luxury Feather & Down pillow is composed of 80% down material and 20% feather, enclosed by a 240-thread-count soft cotton cover. A perfectly plush pillow that offers support for all types of sleepers. Because the Ritz-Carlton chain is part of the Marriott Bonvoy program, you can instead use your points to cover the cost of a pillow. Instead of spending your cash, redeem your Bonvoy points — from just 23,000 points for a pillow. While you won’t be getting the best value from your points, it’s a nice option to have.

    From $105 at Shop Edition

    Edition Feather & Down Pillow

The Edition brand, which is also part of Marriott, is known for offering modern luxury in individualized hotels — it currently has 15 properties in New York, West Hollywood, Dubai, Barcelona, London and beyond. The brand sells its own feather and down pillow so you can re-create your favorite hotel stay at home. The pillow is known for its perfect combination of softness and support, offering a medium level of firmness. The pillow is fluffy and plush, offering both firm support and cushiony softness for supreme comfort. $89 From $71.20 at Hilton to Home

    Hilton Feather & Down Pillow

If you’ve stayed at a Hilton-branded hotel and wished you could bring its feather and down pillow home with you, you’re in luck. An inner chamber of feathers and an outer layer of down provide sleepers with a great combination of support and fluffiness. We like this option because it comes in two varieties: firm and soft. Select which fill best suits your sleeping position — loftier is generally best for back sleepers and less loft is best for stomach sleepers — and bring the comfort from Hilton hotels home. Also available for an extra cost are pillow protectors, which can help keep your luxuriously comfortable pillow clean and dry.

    From $85 at Shop Marriott

    Marriott Feather & Down Pillow

Marriott properties have long been celebrated for their comfortable bedding options, and you can have it all at home too. While the Shop Marriott store offers options from decor pillows to body pillows, for those who want the all-purpose Marriott staple, the feather and down pillow is the best option. The filling means that your head and neck will be supported, and it’s also allergen-free. You can add an optional protector for an additional $14 to elongate the life of your pillow.

    Sonesta Feather & Down Pillow

Sonesta Hotels also offers its feather and down pillow for sale through its Shop Sonesta online store. This pillow is made of half feathers and half down, and its cover is made of 100% cotton. This is a great option for the average sleeper who is looking for support and cushion with a soft exterior cover. Size options include king, queen and standard, and pillow protectors and classic pillowcases are offered for an additional charge.

From $89 at Waldorf Astoria Boutique

Waldorf Astoria Feather & Down Pillow

Waldorf Astoria also makes it easy to outfit your home with one of its pillows — and if you’ve ever stayed at a Waldorf Astoria property, you know that’s a great thing. While you can choose from down pillows and down alternative options, we like the brand’s classic feather and down pillow. King and queen sizes are available, as are pillow protectors for added peace of mind. Plus, we like this option because you can choose firm support or a softer option to best suit your sleeping style.

From $119 at Shop Four Seasons

    Four Seasons Down Alternative Pillow

The Four Seasons brand exudes luxury. If you’ve stayed at a Four Seasons property, you’ll know just how that translates to the bedding too. The duvets are soft and airy, while the pillows offer supreme comfort and plushness — complete with the iconic Four Seasons logo subtly stitched on the exterior. The down alternative pillow is crafted from 100% hypoallergenic polyester fiber and is antibacterial and anti-microbial. You can choose from a king, queen or standard size to ensure you sleep like you’re on vacation every night.

Why you should always travel with compression socks, according to experts | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

They might not be the most exciting item to add to your packing list, but a good pair of compression socks is a must-have for anyone who finds themselves boarding flights on a regular basis.

Compression socks come with a number of benefits for frequent flyers that range from serious medical prevention to cosmetic and comfort factors. While doctors and orthopedic specialists agree that they aren’t absolutely vital for people with no prior medical conditions, compression socks are still considered to be a valuable travel tool for anyone hoping to make long flights a more comfortable experience.

We spoke with a handful of professionals to get their insights on the benefits of wearing compression socks while flying as well as some of the better compression socks on the market to look for based on your particular needs.

One of the most well-known perks of compression socks is how they can help to prevent blood clots, a worry for many when traveling by air. They work to stimulate circulation in the lower half, which is especially useful during long flights when you’re sitting for prolonged periods.

“Compression stockings and socks can promote comfort while traveling and be one of the easiest ways to avoid blood clots associated with deep vein thrombosis (DVT),” explains Dr. Bob Bacheler, managing director and flight nurse at Flying Angels. “Compression stockings/socks are elastic and as such help to prevent blood from pooling in the lower extremities, and prevent clots from forming.”

After a long flight, it’s common for your legs to take some time to get used to activity. Along with promoting circulation in your legs, compression socks also work to help fight the feeling of fatigue in your legs.

“To help with leg fatigue, it is a good idea to start with nonmedical compression socks, which you can buy online,” says Kyle Kroeger, founder of ViaTravelers. “Nonmedical support socks encourage circulation and can be worn on the plane and off. A key benefit is that you can stay more active on your feet as a tourist when you arrive at your destination.”

Sitting for prolonged periods is common on flights, which, due to gravity, causes fluid retention in your legs below the knee. According to Derek Roach, owner of Flow Feet Orthopedics, this is also known as gravitational edema (colloquially referred to as swelling) and can easily be prevented with the right compression socks.

“The elevation during flight does not have an effect on the swelling; however, it is the position of your body and gravity forcing fluids down to your lower half,” says Roach.

Being able to stand up and walk around or stretching is limited on a plane; therefore, promoting blood circulation is necessary. “Compression socks help to increase circulation, thus preventing swelling in your lower legs and feet,” he explains.

Some surgeons and doctors believe that wearing compression socks on a regular basis — and especially if you travel frequently — will help to prevent the backup of blood flow that can cause the appearance of varicose veins in the legs.

The benefits of wearing compression socks while flying tend to outweigh whatever inconvenience or slight discomfort that the stockings can sometimes cause.

The best compression socks and stockings to consider

With all of the benefits that come with wearing compression socks on flights, you may want to purchase a pair for yourself. But, as with most things we can buy, some are better than others.

“As a flight nurse myself, I am frequently on extended flights of 12 hours to 24 hours, and I always wear compression socks,” says Dr. Bacheler. “The most important thing to look for is a compression sock that fits well. If a sock is too tight and uncomfortable, it is probably too small.

“Compression socks should be high quality; comfortable to wear; do not bunch up, which can cause blood flow restriction; or slide down, which indicates that they are too loose.”

You’ll want to be sure to read the fine print when shopping for the right compression socks for your specific needs. The primary difference between compression stockings, anti-embolism stockings and nonmedical compression socks is how high they come up. Nonmedical compression socks usually come up below the knee, while compression stockings traditionally come up to mid-thigh.

Both typically provide the same compression, measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). A good compression sock will provide 15 to 25 mmHg, and good compression stockings and socks both promote blood return but do not interfere with blood flow to the extremity.

Here are some expert-recommended compression socks you should consider before you head off on your next long-haul flight.

    Hi Clasmix Compression Socks

Plus, they wash well without losing their compression and provide moisture-wicking properties to keep your feet cool and dry. The socks come in 11 different color options to best fit your style.

    From $16.99 at Amazon

Powerlix Compression Socks for Women & Men

This pair of compression socks offers more compression than some others on this list — 20-30 mmHg — but still retains their comfort. The socks are made from a soft, breathable and lightweight fabric composed of nylon and spandex. A non-slip cuff at the calf makes sure your socks don’t slide down your legs during travel.

    $11.97 at Amazon

    Pure Compression Store Compression Socks

The Pure Compression Store Compression Socks are a well-loved and budget-friendly option popular among frequent flyers and those with leg fatigue and tendonitis. The graduated cotton socks are not as tight as comparable options, which makes them much more convenient to pull on and off on the go. They’re breathable too, made with cotton and copper.

    $59.90 at Nordstrom

    Belly Bandit 2-Pack Compression Socks

This two-pack of compression socks is made of a polyester, nylon, spandex and cotton blend. They’re knee-high and offer casual compression that will help to maximize circulation and reduce swelling. These could be a great addition to your packing list.

    $18.94 at Amazon

Windsor Collection Men’s Gradual Compression Travel Support Socks

This pair of gradual socks will help to prevent circulation problems. They’re made of a Coolmax, spandex and elastic stretch material that works to support your legs from foot to calf. This pair can fit men’s shoe sizes 9 to 11.5.

“A graduated compression sock (gradual reduction in pressure as you move up the leg) can do wonders for those that experience swelling during flights or while sitting for long periods of time,” says Roach. “Not everyone experiences swelling during flights, but those with less active lifestyles or already have poor circulation can benefit from these sock features.”

    From $19.99 at Amazon

Thigh High Compression Stockings with Silicone Band

Thigh-high compression stockings aren’t for everyone, but if you tend to have painful swelling or discomfort in your legs and thighs while flying, this can be an option worth considering. The nylon-spandex blend and silicone lining helps to ensure stockings will stay in place without curling around the thighs or rolling down mid-flight.

When it comes to family travel, backpacks are the ideal storage option. They allow kids to lug their own items hands-free, making it easy for them to hold your hand in crowded areas. Plus, they’re more lightweight than a typical kids’ luggage set, so you can use them as carry-on bags and save your baggage allowance for checked luggage.

If you’re traveling long distances with your little one or you plan to do lots of outdoor activities, look for a kids backpack made of durable fabric that’s water-resistant and offers plenty of pockets and compartments to hold toys, books, clothes, water bottles and more. Safety features like reflectors and tethers that keep little ones close are great for nighttime activities or in crowded spaces. And, if your child is about to hit a major growth spurt, be sure to choose a backpack with adjustable straps to ensure it will fit your little one as they grow.

Most of all, it’s important to do your research to find the backpack option that’ll work best for your kiddo. Here are 20 of our favorite options with a variety of features and styles for all of your family travels to come.

It’s got most of the same features as the adult version, including two water bottle compartments (ideal for outdoor excursions), plus a tucked-away hip strap. All they have to do is place their mouth on the spout and take a sip as they walk, run, bike or play. Bseash Free Knight Small Size Waterproof Kids Sport Backpack

Made for kids between 3 and 6 years old, this affordable backpack provides great value for everyday travel. The drawstring closures make it a cinch for little ones to pack and pull items, and a waterproof coating ensures it can stand up to spills and rainy weather. One parent said, “This is just the right size for a change of clothes, a hat, a water bottle, a flashlight, some snacks and a hoodie rolled up on the outside.”

    $25 $18.80 at Amazon

    Jansport Half Pint Mini Backpack

This small backpack is one of Jansport’s bestsellers due to its compact — yet roomy — size and incredible durability. One parent called it “the best, most reliable and durable bag on the market,” after his son got a whopping 19 years of use from it. “No holes, rips, or tears in the bag, just faded.” And while it’s not necessarily made for kids, its small size and weight (less than 7 ounces!) make it a perfect fit for kids. It comes in 19 colors, too, so kids can choose their favorite shade.

    $40 at Osprey

    Osprey Daylite Kids

The neat thing about this compact backpack is that it comes with a rescue whistle in case kids get hurt or lost, which is perfect for long hikes, bike rides and adventures through crowded airports. A ventilated back panel keeps them from getting too sweaty, and two mesh side pockets can hold multiple water bottles at once. The small front pocket comes with a key clip, too. In addition to the main storage compartment and the front zipper pocket, it has a multifunctional interior pocket that can accommodate a hydration reservoir if you choose to add it.

    $32.98 $31.98 at Amazon

    Vaschy Plush Animal Backpack

Sometimes it’s simply unrealistic to think a child younger than 3 is going to carry much in their backpack. But, if they can carry a few toys, games and puzzles — and maybe even a change of clothes and a sippy cup — what more can you ask for? These adorable 3D plush backpacks double as a lovey with their soft exterior and enough room for books, bottles and more inside. It also comes with a detachable leash that’s almost 4 feet in length, so you can keep track of your tot in crowded areas.

    $59.99 at Amazon

J World New York Setbeamer Rolling Backpack & Lunch Bag

One of the best features of this travel backpack is the wheels that are tucked away at the bottom, which allow the bag to convert to a rolling suitcase when your child’s back needs a break. The other standout feature is an insulated lunch bag that keeps travel snacks fresh during long flights. But that’s not all. It also has a molded rubber bottom that ensures it can get dragged across roadways, carpets and dirt without taking a beating. Two mesh side pockets perfectly fit water bottles for hydration on the go, and card slots and an internal zipper help to keep small, important items secure.

11 portable playpens that are essential for traveling families | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

Whether your travels take you to the beach, the park or even a friend’s backyard, there’s one thing you’ll want to bring in tow if you have a little one: a playpen. While we don’t want to put our kids in “baby jail,” there are times when we just need to contain them, which is when a playpen — or playard — is the perfect solution.

Of course, a travel crib can typically serve this purpose, but traditionally, playpens are roomier. There’s also a good chance that you don’t want to put your child’s bed for the night in the sand or the dirt outside.

Fortunately, playpens have come a long way. Instead of the big and bulky plastic playpens of decades past, you can now find ones that travel significantly lighter, pop up within seconds and offer plenty of shade. There are many playpen options for your on-the-go needs — here are 11 of our favorites for your next vacation.

    $195.99 at Target

In just two seconds, the AeroMoov Instant Travel Playard will pop right up, making it incredibly easy to set up a play space for your baby. At less than 11 pounds and less than 5 inches wide when folded flat, it’s one of the most compact and lightweight playards on the market. The playard also comes with a convenient carrying bag, which makes it easy to pack in your large suitcase, store in the overhead compartment on an airplane or slide into your car’s trunk on a road trip.

Although this playard is built for babies — those weighing less than 13 pounds or until they can sit up on their own — it’s one of the few playards that is also certified for safe overnight sleeping. You can also purchase a separate UV 50+ sunshade and mosquito net bundle, which is ideal for the outdoors.

    $129.99 $90.49 at Amazon

Additionally, there are roll-down shades on all six sides of the mesh side walls to fully keep the sun and bugs away.

For some downtime, a dedicated pocket inside offers touchscreen capability, so you can give your child a device and keep them entertained while also keeping the device safe from sand, dirt and water. We like this option for traveling families because the frame comes fully assembled and can be folded or unfolded in seconds. Plus, take it from the car to the campsite easily with the included travel bag, which also features a convenient shoulder strap.

If you don’t need these features and are looking to spend a little less money on your playard, this could be a great option.

The frame itself is sturdy while also being extremely easy to set up. The frame comes fully assembled, so you can quickly unpack and unfold it so it’s ready for use. When it comes to taking this playard on the go, you can utilize the included travel bag, which features a shoulder strap for easy carrying.

Although this version is about $60 more expensive than the basic version, if you plan on bringing the playard to the beach or park, this extra feature might be a necessity. And, to make this a solid option for every trip, you can transport it in the included travel bag with convenient shoulder strap.

The water-resistant canvas floor allows you to use the playard outside — including on damp grass — and keep your child dry. Though this playard features a sturdy design, the lightweight metal frame weighs about 12 pounds and can easily pop and fold into a compact space-saving design. The playard is for use for children aged 6 to 24 months — or up to 35 inches tall.

    $131 at Amazon

Summer Infant Pop ‘n Play Deluxe Ultimate Playard

The Summer Infant Pop ‘n Play Deluxe Ultimate Playard is similar to the Summer Infant Pop ‘n Play Portable Playard but with one additional nice-to-have feature: a canopy. The removable clip-on canopy provides full coverage over the playpen, blocking 98% of UVA and UVB rays. Additionally, the canopy includes two zip-open panels to allow some sunshine and airflow into the playard.

On top of the canopy benefit, the Deluxe version also features a padded floor and a removable touchscreen-enabled entertainment pouch. Although slightly more expensive than the basic version, the added benefits might be well worth it. At the same time, this design retains its travel friendliness, thanks to an easy-to-fold design and included travel bag for easy transport.

There’s also an attached storage pocket and a travel bag for easy portability. The playard is made for children aged 6 to 24 months and up to 35 inches tall.

The included side sun shades provide 50% UV protection, but they can also roll up three-fourths of the way with a magnet closure. Inside the tent, there are also three storage pockets to keep your child’s toys and activities safe and clean. There’s also an included sleeping pad to keep your child more comfortable.

Joovy Room2 Largest Playard Portable Playpen

If you’re looking for a large space for your child to play or rest, the Joovy Room2 will give them 10 square feet of play space. It’s got large mesh siding on each of the four walls so you can keep an eye on your little one. The playpen also comes with two wheels on the bottom, allowing you to move it around easier. The essentials list: ‘The Amazing Race’ host Phil Keoghan shares his travel must-haves | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

The number you’re looking for is 225,000. That’s how many miles Phil Keoghan typically logs per year as the host and executive producer of “The Amazing Race.” “It’s the most ambitious reality show out there because we’re always on the move,” he says. “In any given season, we’re constantly switching countries thousands of miles away from each other.”

Keoghan’s work with the CBS stalwart — in which teams of two span the globe in hopes of winning $1 million — has led to 23 Emmy nominations and 10 wins since its 2001 premiere. But eliminating exhausted contestants at pit stops is just a small part of his journey. He’s also embarked on don’t-try-this-at-home adventures such as pedaling his bike from Los Angeles to New York City to raise money for MS Disease (documented in the film “The Ride”), enjoying a 5-star meal on top of an erupting volcano in Stromboli and swimming the Bosphorus Strait from Asia to Europe.

These lofty credentials unofficially make the rugged New Zealand native the most well-traveled host on the planet. (In fact, in 2004, he trekked 467,000 miles, which “is the distance to the moon and back.”) And, as such, he considers himself a true on-the-go do’s and don’ts expert.

“The most important thing is that you’ve got to have systems in place and keep repeating them until everything becomes standard operating procedure,” explains Keoghan, who’s also hosted
“National Geographic Explorer” and has been a correspondent for “60 Minutes Sports.” “Keep your documentation and money in the same place every time. Mistakes happen when you’re tired and break the pattern and decide to put your electronics in the airplane front-seat pocket.”

Keoghan, who lives in LA with his wife, Louise, and daughter, Elle, spoke with CNN Underscored to highlight the products that help him navigate life on the road.

Simply put, “Your passport is your ticket to the world,” Keoghan says. He stores his booklet in a sturdy holder, along with a card that lists emergency phone numbers. “You need to know who to call if you’re in trouble,” he says. Note that he keeps some cash and a spare credit card on his body in case a bag gets misplaced or stolen.

“I’m not into anything fancy-looking,” Keoghan says. “It’s all about functionality and finding something that will stand the test of time.” He found his luggage match with this water-resistant duffel, which is made of ballistic nylon and features detachable shoulder straps.

Write on! Sure, Keoghan has a state-of-the-art phone to communicate with his production crew. But when it comes to documenting his thoughts, an old-school notebook rules. “I love having this diary with me because I make notes about the cool things that have happened to me and what people say to me — and I jot down ideas and sketches,” says Keoghan. He even totes it when he’s off the road.

While viewers only see snippets of Keoghan in each episode, he’s outside in the elements for hours plotting and anticipating the contestants’ arrival at each destination. That’s just one reason why he’s constantly applying sunscreen. “It seems to have worked so far!” he says. He also lugs a bottle of water for hydration and a Power Bar for a snack.

This lightweight and packable jacket is similar to the Jet Lag jacket Keoghan has had for years. “It definitely looks terrible,” he admits of his favorite, overworn outerwear. Nonetheless, he doesn’t leave home without it because “it’s really lightweight and packs nicely into my case.” Besides, he points out, “I always need an extra layer because it can get really chilly in an airport or on a plane.”

Keoghan says he searched “for years and years” for an ideal backpack. “I wanted one that was durable and could carry camera equipment,” he explains. Though he acknowledges the Peak Design bag — which is expandable up 33L, has padded laptop and tablet sleeves, works with packing cubes and is waterproof — is on the pricey side, “it’s done a million miles with me, and I really like it.”

Don’t even get Keoghan started on airport security lines. “There are people who just stand there for 10 minutes and still forget to take out their electronics even though the TSA agent just said it 300 times!” he says. To make his experience as seamless as possible, he wears slip-on, lace-free boots. These particular shoes also happen to be “super comfortable.”

  • Say goodbye to hotel coffee for good with these 11 portable coffee makers | CNN Underscored

Say goodbye to hotel coffee for good with these 11 portable coffee makers | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

In recent years, the tides have turned on so many aspects of the hotel experience. Hotel bars and restaurants can be unforgettable experiences, the humble hotel spa is now a destination in and of itself, and rooms and suites win design awards at properties around the world. But for one reason or another, the in-room coffee bar often still leaves much to be desired. Best-case scenario? A Nespresso machine. Worst case? We won’t even go there.

“As a fellow coffee fiend, I know the struggle of bad hotel coffee all too well,” says Nadine Gehrmann, coffee blogger and owner of a fair-trade coffee shop in Germany. “My top tip is to get yourself a portable coffee maker and to prioritize easy cleaning because nobody wants to deal with dirty equipment on the go.”

If you’re done with trying to choke down bad coffee on the road, we’ve got you covered. These coffee makers lead the pack when it comes to convenience, quality and durability. A portable and travel-friendly coffee maker is easy to pack in a carry-on bag, requiring access to just hot water, coffee and sometimes a filter, which means you’ll never be without your decent morning joe.

The AeroPress Original Coffee and Espresso Maker is going to be your best bet if you want something lightweight, reliable and easy to use while on the go. “I highly recommend the Aeropress due to its compact size and easy cleanup,” Gehrmann says. “It not only produces a delicious cup of coffee that can rival any coffee shop, but when combined with a handheld grinder, you can have freshly ground coffee wherever you are.”

In our testing, we loved the device for its extremely easy-to-use nature. It’s also easy to clean in between uses, which is perfect for travelers who want to keep their coffee gear ready for a cuppa at any point in the day. However, we found it produces a final product more akin to a filter coffee than a true espresso.

If you’re looking for a rich espresso, look no further than our pick for the best portable espresso maker, the Staresso Pro. In our testing, this device gave us the best results of any of the portable options we tried out. It’s small in stature, as it comes in three parts and requires some assembly, perfect for sticking in your carry-on bag or backpack for any trip. Note that it takes some time to generate the pressure needed, but you’ll be rewarded with a quality espresso at the end, and what’s better than that?

The Wacaco Nanopresso Portable Espresso Maker is one of the best options for those who prefer rugged outdoor adventures over comfortable hotel vacations. The portable coffee maker is no bigger than a standard flashlight and is pretty much just as durable. It also doesn’t require any batteries or electricity and is completely manually powered — the pumping system pulls full shots of hot espresso just with the help of your hands. The cylinder-shaped design is also extremely easy to clean so you won’t have to worry about too much maintenance while on the go.

This portable espresso maker is another stand-out option for those who opt for more adventure-focused travel and might not have the best setup to brew coffee in a kitchen or coffee bar area. The Staresso Classic Portable Espresso Machine (as opposed to the Staresso Pro, listed above) is particularly convenient and versatile thanks to its dual-purpose brewing method. The interior brewing system is compatible with both Nespresso pods and standard ground coffee, which gives you the option of bringing your own bag of coffee or opting for the convenience of a pod. The adjustable pressure also means you can choose between concentrated shots of espresso and lighter Americano-style drinks.

The Kuissential SlickDrip Collapsible Silicone Coffee Dripper might be the best option for coffee lovers who value the art of packing extremely light. The collapsible silicone coffee maker functions pretty similarly to a Chemex Pour-Over — all you have to do is add coffee, hot water and a filter, and position the device on top of a standard-size mug. The durable silicone material and folding design mean this can literally be thrown into the smallest side pocket of any bag without worrying about it breaking or taking up too much space — a win for travelers of all kinds.

The Bodum Travel Press was made for travelers short on time. It’s essentially a classic French press built right into a to-go travel mug, which means you can take the time to properly brew your coffee even if you’re rushing out your hotel room door. The vacuum-sealed, double-wall construction keeps hot beverages temperate for several hours at a time and the entire single-serve traveler is dishwasher-friendly for easy maintenance.

The Outin Mini is up there with the top choices for portable coffee makers. Yes, it’s a bit on the pricey side, but if you’re a serious coffee fiend, it’ll be worth the price. This option heats water in less than 4 minutes and provides easy and hands-free extraction so you won’t have to work up a sweat while making your morning coffee. It’s also compatible with both ground coffee and coffee capsules like Nespresso pods and Illy, which provides added convenience and more options to choose from. We also love the stylish look of this portable espresso machine, which comes in five color options.

In addition to the Nanopresso, Wacaco also offers a portable espresso maker in its range, dubbed the Picopresso. This is the more expensive of the Wacaco options out there, and as such, in our testing, we found that you can expect a quality espresso shot. However, we found that the Staresso Pro’s design is generally better. This option is operated manually, so there’s no electricity or batteries required, and it’s super compact. It even comes with a travel case to avoid any damage while in transit.

At the end of the day, if you’re lucky enough to have a Nespresso machine in your room, you’ll probably want to skip the dusty paper cup and brew your morning coffee right into your travel mug. The Yeti Rambler Travel Mug earns our seal of approval for its dual-slider leakproof lid (a major bonus while traveling) and impressive hot and cold temperature retention. This travel mug also comes in a huge spectrum of fun colorways — from hot pink and orange to forest green and turquoise — to best suit your style.

Under $25 scores: The pocket-size Perilogics Phone Mount is a must-have travel accessory | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

Traveling can be a daunting task for even the most seasoned of adventurers. Between delays and cancellations, lost luggage, uncomfortable seats, loud neighbors and much more, there’s a lot that can make what should be a straightforward travel journey less than ideal. So when a product comes around that helps to relieve some of those travel pains, we’re interested.

Enter the Perilogics Universal In-Flight Airplane Phone Mount. Sitting with your neck cranked at a 45-degree angle to watch a film on your phone is not an option if you want to arrive at your destination without severe stiffness and pain. This small yet effective phone mount is meant to serve as the perfect solution to any in-flight entertainment viewing difficulties.

I tried the Perilogics Phone Mount on a recent flight, and it’s become a staple in my travel wardrobe — and beyond. Here’s why.

This multipurpose phone mount is the perfect addition to any traveler’s packing list. It works with most devices and, ultimately, can make any flight experience much more comfortable with an eye-level viewing experience. At just less than $15, this pocket-size device is a must-have for any traveler.

I’ve flown a lot. As in, for several years, I’ve been averaging more than 100,000 miles flown per year (minus the largely stationary pandemic years, of course). The one issue that’s always existed for me: how to watch my favorite downloaded films and TV shows from my phone without cramping my neck.

Especially as more and more airlines are doing away with seatback entertainment screens, it’s become ever more important to bring your own entertainment. I stumbled on the Perilogics Universal In-Flight Airplane Phone Mount while scrolling through Amazon travel essentials, and I was intrigued by its nearly 10,000 positive reviews. And, as it turns out, this small but mighty device has single-handedly solved a painful travel problem for me.

underscored underscored Perilogics Universal In-Flight Airplane Phone Mount

This simple-to-use seatback phone holder is a game changer for travelers of all budgets. Not only is it a budget in itself at just $13, but everyone can use it if you’ve got something to watch on your phone that isn’t available as part of the in-flight entertainment system (think Netflix exclusives, YouTube videos and the like).

First off, it’s worth noting that this phone mount can work with just about any mobile device, regardless if you’re an Apple aficionado, a Google fanatic or anything in between. It worked with all of the Apple devices I tried — including while in a phone case. The company says that it can accommodate any screen up to 6.7 inches — in other words, all Apple iPhone devices will fit.

underscored Perilogics Universal In-Flight Airplane Phone Mount

Once you’ve got your phone secured in the mount comes the fun part: getting it perfectly positioned for optimal viewing. This thing turns — like, a lot. The dual joints of the mount offer a multidirectional 360-degree rotation, allowing it to contort into some truly remarkable shapes. Ultimately, it’s finding the best way to situate the mount for a supreme horizontal viewing experience from your seat. And, as an added bonus, if you can arrange your phone in a manner that allows, you’ll still have access to your charging port to keep your device fully charged up for the full length of your movie.

Once you’re ready to stabilize the mount, expand the 1.5-inch clamp and attach it to a part of the seat directly in front of you. When I tried using the device on a recent flight, I attached it to the literature pocket above the tray table, which worked perfectly. The clamp itself is padded with silicone, so it won’t move around if you have to touch your screen or if your plane hits some turbulence. And, thanks to the silicone padding, the mount felt perfectly secure and capable of potentially holding my iPhone 12 Pro Max for hours on end.

underscored Perilogics Universal In-Flight Airplane Phone Mount3

My one slight gripe with the device was that the clamp was rather difficult to extend, requiring a bit of force to do so. For this reason, I recommend only attaching the mount to the seat in front of you when your phone is properly situated and you’re ready to stream so as to avoid disturbing your forward neighbor. Let’s face it, no one wants to be that annoying passenger who’s constantly banging the seat in front of them.

This travel game changer goes above and beyond in helping to improve the travel experience, and it can also fit in the palm of your hand. When you’re done using the device, fold it back up into its compact stature and store it in any travel backpack or carry-on bag. On my flight, I found the device to be small enough to fit in my pocket during boarding so I didn’t have to get up and access my backpack in the overhead bin.

It wasn’t until I returned home from my short weekend trip did I realize the number of other uses for the Perilogics Phone Mount. While it’s largely marketed as great for use on airplanes and in transit, it’s also a great tool to use at home. Tired of holding your phone in bed? Put it in its horizontal mode to sit flat on a bedside table. Want to watch a cooking tutorial while you’re making dinner? Clamp the mount onto a secure kitchen surface. For less than $15, this score of an item goes beyond use on a plane to help make at-home life more hands-free and convenient.

underscored underscored Perilogics Universal In-Flight Airplane Phone Mount2

I love the Perilogics Phone Mount for its simple, effective structure and ability to solve one of the bigger points of in-flight comfort. I’ll be bringing it along on all of my upcoming summer trips and beyond.

The essentials list: Reality TV star Captain Glenn Shephard shares his travel must-haves | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

China, Japan, Australia and France are just some of the countries TV personality Captain Glenn Shephard has lived in. Last year, the “Below Deck Sailing Yacht” star took time off in St. Barts in the French West Indies. Now, he’s joining our Zoom meeting from a café near his home in the Spanish island of Majorca. “I’ve moved around my whole life,” he says. “Super-yachting as a captain for the past 20 years is probably the most normal and stable thing I do.”

That’s saying a lot, given all the drama on the high seas on “Below Deck Sailing Yacht.” For the fourth season of the unscripted Bravo hit (premiering April 10 at 8 PM EST), Shephard — who goes by “Capt. Glenn” — promises everything from a near collision to a fire to a crew rebellion aboard the Parsifal III. “A lot of crazy stuff happened and that’s why people tune in,” he says. “But I’m still here!”

As always, viewers will also see some beautiful scenery. Shephard spent last summer taking his various guests all around the sun-kissed Italian island of Sardinia (plus the nearby Maddalena Archipelago and Tavolara Island) in the Mediterranean Sea. “It’s such a lovely location and definitely one of the highlights of the Mediterranean,” he says. “The landscape is incredible, you see these turquoise waters and there’s a lot of history.”

This summer, Shephard will return to the Parsifal III for more adventure — but he already knows he’s going to pack light. “I like to move fast and too much stuff slows you down,” he says. Still, he paused to share his nine travel essentials with CNN Underscored.

Shephard doesn’t just take a bite out of his beloved Apple products, he basically owns the entire orchard. “I am such a nerd about it,” he says, noting that he totes his iPhone, iPad Pro, MacBook Air, Apple Watch and AirPods on his excursions. To monitor the whereabouts of all those collectables (and everything else), he uses his AirTags. “I keep them in all my bags,” he says.

Related: AirTag vs. Tile: Here’s how to pick the right tracker for you

For those long-haul overseas flights, “I definitely need my mask so I can sleep on the plane and be ready for the day ahead as soon as I land,” Shephard says. He singles out this one-size-fits-all mask from Tempur-Pedic, which contours perfectly to any face to achieve maximum sleep tranquility. And just to ensure excellent zzzs, Shephard also brings an accompanying Tempur-Pedic Neck Pillow.

Related: The best sleep trackers in 2023

On land, Shephard wears “nice and comfortable” Nike training shoes or flip-flops. On sea, he opts for classic Sperry boat shoes. Actually, it’s not an option. “We never wear shoes that you would wear on the street,” he says, adding that any inappropriate footwear is taken in the Parsifal gangway and stored. His go-to nautical shoes are designed to get wet and boast special traction. Plus, “The soles don’t mark up the decks.”

Related: 21 pairs of travel shoes that offer supreme comfort

In his Dopp kit? Well, put it this way: “I don’t use a lot of fancy products,” he says. “I use a three-in-one shampoo for everything except toothpaste.” His no-fuss toiletries include a five-blade Gillette razor, Gillette gel shaving cream — he shaves every day — and a rechargeable Oral B toothbrush that sweeps away plaque via three modes. As he astutely notes, “manual just doesn’t cut it anymore!”

Related: The best electric toothbrushes in 2023

All smiles here: Shephard also packs his stainless steel foldable tripod to help him take steady selfies on his iPhone and capture all the beauty around him. “I love to take photos of my changing surroundings,” he says.

“I love photography and share a lot of my photos on my social media,” he says. (Check out his Instagram feed for proof!) Flash to this waterproof action camera, which offers double the average frame rate for smooth motion and pristine image quality. The captain recently snapped away in Cordoba, Spain, where he captured “a beautiful church that used to be a mosque. I love history.”

Related: We tested the new Panasonic Lumix S5II

Of course, those nifty cameras are useless if not properly charged. So Shephard never forgets his America to Europe and UK adapter — compatible in Germany, Italy, Greece, Iceland, Finland, Spain, Denmark, Israel and more. “I always need to power up something,” he explains.

Related: 42 of the most useful travel products you can buy on Amazon

Regardless of the destination or length of the trip, Shephard abides by an important travel law: “Don’t wait for bags.” So instead of checking luggage at the airport, he stuffs everything in two compact backpacks. The versatile Oakley Kitchen Sink features adjustable mesh-lined shoulder straps, a padded side-sleeve for access to his MacBook Pro, a bottom shoe department and “latches that look like parachute cords.” Its companion, the Bathroom Sink, is slightly smaller and holds his chargers and passport.

Because Shephard is a professional sun worshiper, he’s quite particular about his shades. “I need to protect my eyes,” he says. These sleek glasses from Maui Jim feature polarized lenses that block UV rays and cut down on glare. “These are really important when you’re sailing or boating because you can see the water and see what’s underneath the water.”

  • 10 expert-approved tips for a successful solo female travel adventure | CNN Underscored

10 expert-approved tips for a successful solo female travel adventure | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

It doesn’t matter if you consider yourself to be an introvert or an extrovert, nothing compares to traveling solo for the first (or ninth!) time. There’s just something about making your own itinerary without having to answer to anyone else’s timeline or taste. Being on the road alone gives way to certain possibilities and chance encounters that might not happen if you were in the company of a friend, loved one or on a group tour.

That being said, traveling solo as a woman comes with its own set of challenges that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Whether you’re going on an international trip or you’re just driving a few states over, staying safe and alert while on your own is key to ensuring your trip goes over well without any dangerous bumps in the road along the way.

It’s not impossible — or all that difficult — to plan and execute a safe and fun-filled solo female trip as long as you take the time to understand what to expect and make sure you’re properly equipped for what’s to come.

We spoke with a handful of solo female travelers who’ve each banked countless hours traveling for both business and pleasure around the globe. Here’s what they suggest doing and packing in order to ensure your next solo female trip goes off without a hitch.

When talking about traveling alone as a woman, it’s important to go on any trip knowing you have the right equipment. For that reason, you might want to consider boosting your tech gear. Oftentimes, the latest from the likes of Apple and beyond have beneficial technological advancements as part of their newest devices.

“I travel alone fairly often and often hike when on trips, but I have a poor sense of direction and once lost the trail and was in the middle of a forest in an area known for bear sightings,” says Karen Kwan, travel writer and blogger at Health & Swellness. For that reason, she recommends bringing higher-tech gadgets along on more adventurous travels to ensure you’re within reach of help if needed.

If you foresee an adventure trip in your future as a solo female traveler, your travel gear is of the utmost importance to leave you feeling comfortable ahead of your journey. “My safety picks for solo travel include the Apple Watch Ultra, which has an 86-decibel siren if you need to send out a distress signal,” Kwan says. “It can be heard up to 600 feet away.”

While the Apple Watch Ultra can be a great smartwatch for attracting others, it also comes with the ability to call emergency services in your region, provided cellular services are available. And, in the event you do become lost on a hike or other outdoor adventure, the Apple Watch Ultra’s Compass Backtrack capability means that you can retrace your steps and end up back on the right track — or trail.

Having a phone with the right safety features can also go a long way to giving you peace of mind if you’re heading off on an adventurous solo trip. “I love that the iPhone 14 [and iPhone 14 Pro] features Emergency SOS via satellite,” Kwan says. “This means you can text emergency services even if you’re in a remote area with no cellular or Wi-Fi service.”

As a solo female traveler, it’s a great idea to take extra precautions when it comes to where you’re staying. Whether you’ve booked budget-friendly accommodation or you’ve treated yourself to a stay at a five-star resort, it’s worth it to bring a bit of extra security to your room.

Though there is a slew of products on the market that go a long way to making your stay more secure, two of the most popular come in the form of travel door locks and door alarms.

“As a female traveler, one thing I never travel without is an additional room lock that I can add to the door wherever I’m staying,” says Taylor Beal of Traverse With Taylor.

The Addalock travel door lock is both portable and lightweight, and it installs in seconds the moment you shut your hotel door behind you. “The lock just slips on over the inside of the door jamb and then locks to add additional security. The lock is so small and comes in a packable drawstring bag. I was surprised at how much force it added for such a small device,” Beal says.

In addition to a door lock for added security, you might also want to consider adding a door alarm to your travel wardrobe.

“I put furniture against any sliding doors but I also have a door alarm for the main hotel room door,” says Marlynn Schotland, cookbook author and travel writer behind Urban Bliss Life. “It’s inexpensive, small, easy to pack, easy to use and makes a very loud noise if the door is opened when the alarm is in place. Luckily, it’s never gone off during my travels but it’s nice to have that peace of mind.”

Consider the style of handbag or wallet you pack

If you like to travel with all of your essentials close to you, you’ll want to make sure you have the right bag for carrying everything. The ideal handbag has enough room for the travel gear you’ll need — think portable power banks, cords, credit cards, space for your phone and more — in addition to the security you’ll want for peace of mind.

Many travel experts recommend using a crossbody bag as a purse option on your travels. Not only can they be secured across your chest, which makes it harder for thieves to snatch when you’re walking, but they often feature anti-theft pockets galore. And the best ones are cute enough that you’ll want to wear them anyway!

“I’ve had this crossbody for years, and it’s made specifically for travel,” says Karen Delgado, travel vlogger at Karen Alexandra. “It has a spot for my passport, Kindle, a leash for my keys and several zipper compartments to keep things safe and secure. When traveling solo, I try to only use crossbody bags and make sure they have either multiple compartments or some sort of ‘lock’ to keep my personal belongings safe as I explore. This one from Lo & Sons fits the bill perfectly.”

In the instances when you want to keep all of your valuables out of sight and therefore want to avoid carrying a crossbody bag, it could be a good idea to look at other options — sometimes in unexpected places. “The hidden bra wallet is the best way for solo female travelers to keep some cash hidden on you at all times,” says Shelley Marmor of Travel Mexico Solo.

“It is basically a small wallet that fits a credit card and a few bills — just enough for emergencies. You can snap it onto your bra in the front or on the side, and no one would ever see it under a loose-fitting shirt or flowy sundress. This is similar to a money belt, but since bra wallets are less common, they are even easier to conceal.”

These days, staying connected is considered essential for most solo female travelers. Whether you’re looking to follow directions, stay connected with friends and family back home or trying to make a dinner reservation, you might want to consider getting a SIM card to ensure you never lose touch.

When I first started traveling, I never purchased a local SIM card to get on the internet,” says Cali O’Connor, host of the Travel Possibilities podcast. “If I were out and about, I would have to go find a cafe with Wi-Fi, ask for the password, hope the signal was strong and go about my business.”

However, that’s changed for O’Connor. “A SIM card is imperative for safety so you can easily look up directions plus you can easily contact someone for help if needed. Being able to access the internet in the moment it is needed is imperative for the safety of a solo female traveler.”

Google Fi is a favorite SIM card among frequent travelers. There are no contracts or activation fees involved, and if you plan to travel internationally, you’ll want the Unlimited Plus option, which gives you unlimited data, calls and texts in more than 200 countries. Just keep in mind that you’ll need to activate the SIM card before you leave home in the US.

Keeping in touch with your friends and loved ones at home can go a long way toward providing peace of mind to you — and them — that your travels are going smoothly. While AirTags are a solid choice for sharing your location with someone back home, creator of Veggies Abroad Rebecca Gade-Sawicki suggests creating an itinerary of what you plan to do, see, where you’re going to eat and when and share it with someone you trust. “I will also make changes to my Google Doc as I go along so my partner can see that my route for the day has changed,” she explains.

Gade-Sawicki also suggests sharing your rideshare location with family and friends. In some apps, for example, you can choose to have someone notified when you request a car, are picked up, dropped off or if there is a problem. “When I was in Miami, the directions were wrong for the driver [and] he went off course, my partner was notified and immediately texted me to ask if I was okay (the app also sent me a notification asking that, too),” says Sawicki.

Not sure how to carry around an AirTag while you’re on the go? Consider these intuitive cases that are shaped like credit cards and can hold an AirTag in place while keeping it largely unexposed and unknown. Pop one of the card cases into a card slot in your travel wallet for hands-free tracking.

While this might sound like a strange idea, one solo female traveler recommends it as a good security fallback in case things turn sticky.

“My one and only security gadget is an expired debit card,” explains Phyllis Stoller, founder of The Women’s Travel Group, an award-winning small group tour company for women. “If I were hit on and forced to an ATM, I carry the card that the machine would then ‘eat.’”

A travel wallet has spots for all of your favorite travel credit cards. If you elect to go the route of bringing a phony, expired card with you, keep it organized in a dedicated slot like in this wallet from FurArt. It comes in 25 colors and designs and also comes with RFID-blocking technology for added peace of mind.

Ultimately, you’ll want to make sure you have the right tools on you to make you feel most safe. Founder of Go Wanderly Jenny Ly suggests a smart pepper spray that connects to an auto-alert app. “This pepper spray’s maximum power trigger activates a built-in siren and instantly notifies everyone on your predetermined list of contacts of your location through GPS with just one push,” explains Ly.

That said, pepper spray is illegal in many countries and not allowed in carry-on baggage on airplanes — but hairspray can go everywhere. “Anyone who has gotten hairspray in their eyes can tell you it’s painful and slows them down — it can help if you’re in trouble,” shares Gade-Sawicki.

In addition to bringing something to keep you safe, experts also recommend a personal safety alarm. When activated, the Birdie sounds a 130-decibel siren and a flashing strobe light to deter attackers. For just $30, this is a sound investment for any female traveler, whether you’re headed somewhere familiar or into new territory because, unfortunately, bad things can happen anywhere.

Not only is a portable, TSA-approved power bank essential for any kind of trip, but it’s doubly as important for solo female travelers. While you’ll be prepared for your adventure with your high-tech phone, local SIM card and more, those devices need to be charged enough to make them serve their purpose.

“Something I always have with me when I travel alone is a high-speed power bank,” says Allie Albanese of Parched Around the World. “This may seem like a no-brainer for travelers in general, but I’m talking about having one strictly dedicated to emergencies, especially when road-tripping solo.”

This option from Anker took the title of best overall portable charger in our testing. It can charge up to two devices at once and on a single charge, it can charge an iPhone 11 two and a half times.

“While we all like to have fully charged phone batteries for Googling, texting, calling and scrolling our socials, when you’re on your own you have to be extra prepared because you have nobody to depend on but yourself,” Albanese says. “And there would be nothing worse than to find yourself with a dead phone battery and in need of making an emergency phone call only to discover that you wasted your precious power bank supply to check your IG!”

This option is incredibly portable, and it took the title as such in our testing. It’s got a lightning port and a USB Type A port, meaning you can use the same cord to charge your phone as well as recharge the portable battery. In other words, fewer cords to take along — we consider that a win-win.

Consider wearing a fake wedding band

“I believe that one of the most effective ways for women to stay safe while traveling alone is to prevent risky situations before they can even happen,” explains Jessica Corson of The Belle Voyage. “Whether you’re married or not, one way to avoid unwanted attention while traveling solo is by wearing a fake wedding band.”

While not a surefire way to keep unwanted advances away, this kind of ring sends the signal that you’re not interested in new suitors. A fake wedding band also suggests that you have a travel companion close by. If you get stuck in a situation that makes you feel uneasy, you can always use the excuse that your partner will be joining you soon.

These thin, stackable silicone rings start at just $10 and could be the perfect small investment for solo female travelers. Choose from seven different colors, or opt for a multi-ring, multi-colored pack to pair a ring with every outfit you’ve got planned for your trip.

Want more color options? Enso offers nearly 20 different shades in these stackable silicone rings, perfect for travelers. They’re easy to transport — though you might want to grab a travel jewelry case! — and reviewers rave about how comfortable they are to wear.

Ultimately, many of the same rules that apply to all kinds of travel also apply to solo female travelers. Whether it’s not walking on poorly lit streets late at night or having one too many drinks on your vineyard tour, some common sense rules for travel also apply to solo female trips.

“Among the advice to stay safe while traveling solo as a female, most revolve around how you manage yourself,” explains Hege Jacobsen, a Norwegian female travel blogger currently living in Havana, Cuba. “Things like taking advice from locals (they know best), getting registered taxis or similar, minding your cocktails (especially in Cuba, where they are strong!), having common sense and doing a little research goes a long way.”
