  • How to get Pantone’s Color of the Year into your home, according to interior designers | CNN Underscored

How to get Pantone’s Color of the Year into your home, according to interior designers | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

If you’re a color obsessive, your Super Bowl has arrived. That’s right, Pantone recently announced its 2023 color of the year, and it’s a doozie, folks. Dubbed “Viva Magenta,” the color institute describes it as being “a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family.” Read: Viva Magenta is a powerful, deep color that harkens ripe berries, burgundy wine, fuschia flowers and everything in between. “I love bold color and Pantone’s 2023 Color of the Year is just that,” says Amber Guyton of the Atlanta-based design firm Blessed Little Bungalow. “Viva Magenta is a rich shade of red that is both daring and warm. I typically don’t use too much red in my designs, but the purple undertone of this shade gives it a warmth that sets it apart and makes it more versatile.”

    Blessed Little Bungalow

The antithesis of the creamy, neutral palettes designers have been leaning into in recent years, Viva Magenta could also signify the return of color — or at least more color — into our aesthetics. “Homeowners are definitely emerging from the neutral pre-Covid palette and adding much-needed happiness and color to their lives,” says Malka Helft of New York-based Think Chic Interiors. “Magenta is quite an amazing color, especially because it lends itself to both warm and cool tones, and as such can be used in any room.”

    A Design Partnership

Incorporating such a bold color into your rooms, however, can be a bit daunting — which is why we turned to the experts for some tips. “Magenta can be used as a pop of color in a piece of artwork or throw pillows, but would be incredible as a large velvet sofa, as well,” says Helft. Adds Northern California-based designer Courtney B. Smith, “I’m always in favor of incorporating vibrant color in spaces — they bring energy and interest to a room. My rule of thumb is to repeat them, at least subtlety, which weaves a story and ties things together. Viva Magenta is not your typical pink — it’s more sophisticated and plays well with greens (especially hits of chartreuse), browns, and blues.”

The great news is that Viva Magenta is a happy hue — which is exactly what our collective consciences need this time of year! “This color will immediately elevate your mood,” says Sabra Ballon of BallonStudio. “It’s stylish and vibrant, but retains a certain level of sophistication as well. In a home, this color will transform any room into a powerful and energetic environment, no matter the lighting. It’s actually a wonderful option to consider when creating a moodier, sexier space, such as a den, library or dressing area.”

Whether you’re contemplating Viva Magenta in a big way (wallpaper!) or small (candles!), the resounding opinion is that it’s a color that can only elevate your space. To get you there, we’ve rounded up our favorite magenta(ish) décor, entertaining and furniture options below.

Nothing screams “design savvy” quite like wallpaper, and we love the flexibility that peel and stick offers — giving you all wow factor without the commitment. This stunning hydrangea pattern is awash in shades of dark and light reds, fitting right in with Pantone’s color of the year.

Filling your walls with art is a must, and this beautiful photograph from Minted artist Heather Deffense will add a hefty dose of magenta — and wanderlust — to your space. Available in a print or canvas, the piece comes in myriad sizes and can be framed, or not, the choice is yours!

One of our favorite cozy blanket brands, ChappyWrap’s pattern offerings range from nautical maps to preppy plaids — not to mention this scallop shell-inspired print that comes in a vibrant cranberry hue.

Whimsical and bold all at once, this playful bowl from Opalhouse designed with Jungalow is going to make a magenta-hued splash on your bookshelf or tabletop. Bonus: It’s the perfect size for catching keys and mail in an entryway.

Swapping an old rug for a new one is a surefire way to reinvigorate your space, and we love this pretty option from washable rug brand Ruggable. Available in seven sizes, the rug incorporates hints of magenta alongside peach, purple and neutral hues — allowing you to incorporate the color of the year in a minimal way that will still have an impact.

Channel all the goodness of spring with this hydrangea wreath from Grandin Road that is bursting with faux fuchsia hydrangea blossoms, providing just the pop of color your door is looking for.

More than 67,000 Amazon reviewers can’t be wrong, right? Right. These ultra-affordable sheets are beloved not only because they can fit 10- and 12-inches deep mattresses, but also for their ultra-soft fabric. Did we mention they come in magenta?

Moody, broody and oozing with magenta hues, this watercolor is part of Minted’s new customizable program where consumers can work with artists to tweak, crop or rotate the piece to better fit their space or aesthetic (for free!).

If your take on Viva Magenta skews pink, then this is the rug for you. Girly and stately at the same time, the Momenia beauty comes in 11 sizes — from runners to sprawling 9’3 x 11’10 options — all at palatable prices that won’t break the bank.

Throw pillows are great, but oversized throw pills? Well, they’re the best. Cozy and inviting, this colorful 24-inch option from Justina Blakeney’s Target collection not only has a removable cover, but it’s also big enough to use as a floor pillow, too.

Brighten your space with these air-dried blooms that were picked at their peak and will thusly provide long-lasting (magenta) splendor wherever they land. More to know: Two bouquets for under 25 bucks means your vase will be spilling over!

Fear not, magenta has a place in the bathroom, too, thanks to these ultra-plush Turkish towels from Frontgate, which we named the best towels on the market. Available in more than two dozen hues — including the magenta-esque “dahlia — the towels can also be monogrammed.

A candle inspired by downtown discotheques is right up our alley — and not surprisingly it’s swathed in a sexy, magenta jar. Toxin-free, vegan and made from coconut and soy wax, the Boudoir Rouge has a 50-hour burn time and smells of vintage lipstick, cherries and violet.

Modern and imaginative, this fuschia pendant lamp from Kartell is made in Italy and could work in kitchens, offices and powder rooms alike. Boasting an adjustable hanging height, the bubble-inspired lamp also comes in nine additional colors.

Vibrant wine glasses are having a moment, and these bold stemless options from West Elm are the true embodiment of Viva Magenta. Hand-blown by glass artisans, the set gives off an eye-catching iridescence to boot.

A pop of pink is always welcome in our living spaces, and this one will also signal to your guests that coasters are very much appreciated.

Magenta plays a subtle role in these hand-painted ceramic plates from Our Place, accenting the high-gloss speckled base. Color aside, we love that the plates are stackable, lightweight and scratch- and chip-resistant.

Textural and radiating with spicy vibes, these beaded old-fashioned glasses from Fortessa look like vintage pieces scored in a European flea market. Available in seven colorways, the red hue falls right in line with Pantone’s color of the year.

Greet your guests with a simmering stew — and when they spot the Le Creuset on your stovetop, they’ll know they’re in good culinary hands. Backed by a lifetime warranty, Le Creuset’s Dutch Oven is a must-have for every chef out there, novices and experts alike. We even named it the best splurge Dutch oven on the market. Available in three sizes and a rainbow of colors — including “Rhone,” which is pretty darn close to Viva Magenta — the enameled cast iron cookware can slow cook, sear, roast, bake and fry, making it the soon-to-be hero of your kitchen.

One can never have too many trays in their space, and this one from Alexandra Von Furstenberg is worth the splurge. Whether you treat it like art or, ya know, like a catchall tray for TV remotes and books, this will be a piece everyone notices thanks to that smoke-like magenta streak.

The Swiss know what they’re doing when it comes to knives, and that includes this essential pairing option from Kuhn Rikon. The ultimate kitchen prep knife, we love the unlikely pairing with a bright pink hue.

Beloved by suburban moms and influencers alike, the Stanley Adventure Quenchers keep you hydrated on the go, while also looking utterly Instagrammable thanks to that bright fuchsia hue.

Another kitchen hero product? The revered KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer, which we named the best stand mixer of the year. Whether you’re whipping up big batches cookies, cakes or pasta from scratch, this mixer will expertly assist you — and look good on your counter while doing so, thanks to that regal Empire Red colorway.

Clean lines and piping details make Interior Define’s Graham Upholstered Bed a seriously chic addition to your bedroom. Available in a magenta-hued “Berry” fabric that is a performance vintage velvet, the bed also comes with built-in drawers that are — wait for it — upholstered as well. Now that’s luxurious.

Infuse your outdoor space with some Viva Magenta vibes via The Inside’s take on the sling chair. Anchored with a mildew- and water-resistant polyester fabric — that comes in red, natch — the chair has three position settings and folds flat when not in use.

The phrase “go big or go home” has never been more alive than in this velvet chair, which is available exclusively at ABC. Overstuffed with foam, down and feathers, the Hannah pairs slim track arms and brass legs with this striking magenta colorway.

Leave it to Serena & Lily to have a Viva Magenta offering, but in the most preppy way possible. Enter: The Nantucket Red fabric. Available in more than a dozen upholstered pieces, the pre-washed Belgian linen is ultra-soft and has a well-worn look we absolutely love. Consider getting it on the brand’s best selling Miramar chaise that is perfect in living and bedroom spaces alike.

A ’70s-inspired chair that swivels, too? Yeah, we’re on board with that, especially when it comes in a  performance leather in a hue dubbed “Chianti” that just so happens to be the color of a deep red wine. More to know: The Cooper is also diminutive in size, making it great for small spaces.

Fuzzy, cozy and totally portable, this oversized bean bag from Pottery Barn Teen is perfect for kids’ room and play spaces alike — and we love the deep purple/reddish hue.

Polywood makes some of the best outdoor furniture out there, and if you’re looking to score a few Adirondack chairs for your patio or pool area, look no further. Made from recycled water bottles, the Polywood “lumber” has a wood grain texture and comes in a vibrant red hue that will become the focal point of your seating area.

A chair that’s worth the investment, Arhaus’ Abbot is simultaneously traditional and timeless in design thanks to its gentle curves and generous cushioning. Built in North Carolina, the ultra-soft velvet lounge chair comes in a bold red hue dubbed “Vance Paprika” that is right on trend.

Let us count the ways we love this oversized knot cushion! An eye-catching accent, the 11.8-inch Swedish-inspired piece is perfect for propping your feet up or using as a doorstop, and it comes in a Bordeaux colorway to boot.

Pretty much every designer we spoke to said you can’t go wrong with a bold magenta sofa, and this one from Wayfair is just that. Palatable in price, the Corbyn has a traditional design (complete with nailhead trim) and also comes in an 84-inch size, too.

A hidden sleeper is always a good idea for guests, and we love the Elliot because it functions as an oversized chair by day, but becomes a twin bed at night thanks to a pull-out mattress. The best part? It comes in the brand’s magenta-hued “Royale Berry” that is an ultra-soft fine-knit velvet.

  • Outdoor living isn’t just for the summer. Here’s how to transform your outdoor space for winter | CNN Underscored

Outdoor living isn’t just for the summer. Here’s how to transform your outdoor space for winter | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that we are willing to brave even the chilliest temps in order to spend time with friends and family. While social distancing is mostly in our rear view, having gotten a taste of the coziness that is wintry outdoor entertaining, I’m decidedly here for the long haul. Case in point: While visiting Chicago for Thanksgiving, my husband’s high school friend threw a mini-reunion in his newly renovated backyard. Sure, the inside of his house was warm and safe, but thanks to a slew of heaters, firepits, blankets, speakers (and beer) — not to mention swanky Trex decking and a built-in kitchen — the party was able to forge on in the chilly night, with everyone enjoying the great outdoors ’til way, way too late.

And our friend is just one of millions across the globe right now who are looking to do the same. According to the 2022 Houzz & Home report, 57% of all home renovations in 2021 focused on outdoor upgrades both small (investing in a firepit or putting in a sprinkler system) and large (building a pergola or installing an outdoor kitchen).

Also on board with all things al fresco? Joanna and Chip Gaines, that’s who. The designer couple recently partnered with exterior home solutions brand James Hardie to launch Magnolia Home | James Hardie Collection, a new palette of colors meticulously curated by Joanna and in doing so, chatted with me about everything from how to boost your home’s overall appeal to tips and tricks for improving your outdoor space’s overall appeal.

“Everyone is just craving that extension of the home, not only on the interior, but now the exterior, too,” said Chip. “It’s where everyone is gravitating, we wanna be outside! I love that people are maximizing the space that they have to work with — whether it’s a balcony in New York or a backyard here in Texas.”

Added Joanna, “I do feel like some of our most magical moments are when we’re outside and we’re entertaining. Even if it’s just creating a smaller spot with some string lights and a little fire pit — a simple outdoor feature that really allows everybody to sort of congregate in this cozy spot. To me, it’s worth that investment and I don’t think it needs to break the bank either.”

While a lonely firepit and some folding chairs may have fit the bill a few years ago, today home dwellers are looking for more. “One of the biggest changes in outdoor living and entertaining has been a shift from seasonal to year-round activity,” says Leslie Adkins, vice president of marketing for Trex Company. “Gone are the days of decks and patios that might be used to host a BBQ once or twice a year. Now, homeowners are seeking outdoor living areas where they can relax, watch their favorite shows, host a movie night with friends, play games and truly live every day.”

As such, outdoor entertaining is now fair game 12 months a year, which means we have to deal with the inevitable cold weather encroaching in. Read: Keeping your guests (and yourself!) warm is going to make or break your soiree. “Adding heaters to your space extends the comfort and the ability to entertain guests at any time of day, year-round,” says Blake Petty of Bromic Heating. “The outdoors is the safest place to gather, so in-turn, keeping that space heated and comfortable extends the time we can spend out there together.” Adds Yardzen CEO and cofounder Allison Messner, “We’ve seen a deep desire for year-round backyards and increased requests for all-weather designs that allow for entertaining throughout the seasons.”

    Yardzen

Then there’s the food. Let’s face it: Guests are happiest when they’re bellies are full and when it comes to cooking outside, today’s choices are myriad. “Having options like pellet smokers, kamado grills, gas griddles and even outdoor pizza ovens, consumers are now able to cook anything and everything outside,” says Jason Stutes, chief digital officer at BBQ Guys. “Hosts of all levels are blurring the lines more and more between indoor and outdoor entertaining. Having a dedicated space for outdoor entertaining allows consumers to extend their living space, lower their energy costs by cooking outside and it’s even proven to improve their quality of life — not to mention the cost-cutting effects of not dining out.”

Whether your outdoor investment is small or large, the overarching idea here is that outdoor living — and entertaining — is here to stay year round , and that any upgrades you make to your space is going to be worthwhile. “I think in general, nature is just good for our souls,” says Joanna Gaines. “Being outside and creating these cozy spaces where you’re reading a book or chatting with your best friend, to me, that’s always worth the investment.”

Find everything you need for your outdoor living room — and the party you’re now going to host this winter — below.

If you know, you know: Solo Stove’s smokeless wood-burning fire pit claims are, in fact, true. Available in four sizes, with the Ranger 2.0 being the smallest and most portable, Solo Stoves are made of a stainless-steel outer with an intrinsic 360-degree ventilation system that breeds lots of air flow, which results in very little smoke. New to the pit’s design is a removable base plate and ash pan that makes cleanup a whole lot easier. A great option for outdoor wood-burning fire pits, Solo Stove is also a favorite because of its sleek design — simply add string lights and your ambiance is set. Read our Solo Stove review here.

If you’re looking for a fool-proof outdoor heating solution, Bromic is the best of the best to invest in. This wall- or ceiling-mounted heater, for example, emits a saturating heat to both outdoor and semi-covered spaces that will have your guests ditching their jackets in the middle of winter. “Bromic uses directional radiant heat technology in its heaters, creating the most efficient and effective way to heat the space, as objects are being heated rather than the surrounding air,” says Petty. Available in white or black high-temperature coating, the Tungsten Smart-Heat Electric Infrared Patio Heater also comes in 3000W, 4000W and 6000W sizes — whether you need one for a small porch or a few to canvas your entire patio, these heaters will get the job done. The best part is the chic design that manages to mix form and function so seamlessly.

Small but mighty, this tabletop heater from Cuisinart is a great option for side tables, grilling areas and pretty much any outdoor nook you want to warm up this winter. Churning out 11,000 BTUs, the heater works with a one-pound propane tank and has low, medium and high settings, allowing you to control the amount of heat emitted. More to know: A safety-tilt switch automatically shuts the heater down if it gets knocked over.

Made from HDPE recycled plastics, Polywood’s lumber-looking furnishings are some of the best on the market because they are virtually maintenance-free, they look pristine 24/7 and they can survive the full spectrum of temperatures — from Northeast blizzards to Southwest scorchers. One of our favorite sets is this coastal-inspired 48-inch fire table that comes with five matching Adirondack chairs. We love that the fire pit emits a ton of warmth, but doesn’t overheat the tabletop, which has plenty of room for appetizers. More to know: The chairs have roomy arms that can easily accommodate glasses or snack plates.

We know, there might be some sticker shock here, but you pay for what you get, and with Bromic, you’re getting the market leader for free-standing heaters (that are aesthetically pleasing, to boot!). Unlike mushroom or dome heaters that tend to heat the air above them, Bromic’s radiant format emits 38,500 BTUs of evenly-distributed warmth that can cover a swath of 215 square feet — more than double other standing heaters, and its tilting head means the heat is directional and adjustable, too. Ignited with the push of a button, this portable heater can be fueled by propane or natural gas, has built-in wheels for easy mobility and it can withstand winds up to 8mph.

A bang for your buck — and easy on your outdoor renovation budget! — the Hiland Tall Patio Heater is one of our favorite affordable heater options because not only does it offer a whopping 43,000 BTUs (which, trust us, is a lot of heat), but it also has a built-in adjustable table, making buying side tables unnecessary. With more than 1,500 positive Amazon reviews, this is a great under-$200 option.

Discerning the best way to revamp your outdoor space can be overwhelming, and that’s where online design platform Yardzen steps in. Offering several levels of design packages, Yardzen pros will take a look at your space, assess your goals and dream up options — complete with 3D renderings for a local landscaper or contract to facilitate. Whether you’re looking for plantings guidance, outdoor furniture picks or a specific layout for year round entertaining, the Yardzen team has got you covered.

Durable enough to withstand the harshest of elements (thanks to a powder coated finish), but chic enough to look right at home in your interior formal dining room, the Westport Console’s top lifts off and can be replaced by a removable beverage tub — creating a bar on the fly! More to know: The table has tons of storage behind those cabinets, and it can be coordinated with other pieces from the Westport collection.

Lovely enough for the inside, but made for the outside, this modular seating collection from Grandin Road can be anything from a loveseat to a sprawling sectional — or both! Made from an ultra-durable mahogany/eucalyptus blend of woods, the Stockholm pieces are then finished in a weather-resistant polyurethane coating that protects from both moisture and heat alike. Available in a black or gray stain and with charcoal or beige cushions, the set was inspired by nineteenth century Swedish design and as such features cool details like a channeled frame and intricately carved back slats.

While the big chill is upon us, global warming is ensuring that the temps will be rising once again come spring, and if you’re redoing your outdoor space you’re going to want to invest in a fan. And not just any ol’ fan — a Big Ass one. We love the ESQ because it pairs industrial-strength performance with modern design and an ultra-quiet motor. Oh, and because you can control it from your phone, tablet, remote or via Google Home or Amazon Alexa voice control.

One of our favorite things about Sun Haven’s outdoor furniture is that they arrive fully-assembled and ready to host you and your guests within minutes of unboxing. Home to dozens of modular seating sets, the direct-to-consumer outdoor furniture company is known for ultra-durable pieces that can survive tough weather, still looking pristine season after season. We like this cozy little set that can be your go-to spot for morning coffee — or can be rearranged to fit your entertaining needs when guests come over.

We took one look at the Pretty Rugged product and were sold. Mixing insanely plush faux fur with a waterproof nylon backing, the brand’s blankets are the best choice for keeping you and your guests warm during wintry weather. Case in point: If your party is headed outside but the furniture is soaked, lay your Pretty Rugged blanket down (nylon side) and wrap yourself in the fur to stay warm and dry. We’re not mad at the brand’s fun colorways, and if you want even more blanket, a larger size is available.

There are unavoidable side effects to entertaining outdoors in the winter, and one of them is mud. To protect your interiors from shoe tracks, invest in a coir door mat that will catch most, if not all, of the dirt before it gets inside. This stately option from Frontgate is fade resistant and it can be monogrammed.

“Outdoor rugs can help both define a space and make it feel cozy and inviting,” says Kevin Lenhart, design director at Yardzen. “They also allow you to have a little fun with patterns, textures or colors that add personality, especially when juxtaposed with concrete or monotone decking.” We love this polypropylene option from Brooke and Lou because it’s chock full of texture and eye-catching detail, while also being tightly woven, lightweight and snag free. Available in multiple colors and six sizes, the rug will add a hefty dose of coziness underfoot in your outdoor area this winter.

Perfectly preppy, Chappywrap’s outdoor blankets are a must-have, even if you don’t reside on the East Coast. The oversized original size (60- by 80-inches) can keep at least two people cozy and warm outside at night. Available in dozens of patterns and three additional sizes, the reversible blankets can also be machine-washed and dried with zero pilling, fuzzing or shrinking.

Warmth is a vibe, too, and these lanterns definitely give off that feeling. Available in three heights and two metal finishes, the powder coated aluminum lanterns look beautiful clustered by a fireplace or doorway, instantly adding an inviting ambiance to your space. Throw a few of the brand’s battery-operated candles in your cart, too, because they’re maintenance-free, and sun-, rain- and windproof, too.

The quickest, cheapest way to create an inviting space in your backyard is by adding string lights — just ask Joanna Gaines! And if you want a maintenance-free, long-lasting set, go for an LED option. This 48-foot, plug-in strand of waterproof and weather-resistant Edison-style bulbs, for instance, sheds a dense, warm white light and has more than 2,500 positive reviews and 5,400 favorites on HomeDepot.com. With 24 shatterproof lights — one every two feet — the strand can be daisy chained with up to 11 more strands.

Keep the al fresco party rocking (neighbors be damned!) late into the night with this bada$$ sound system from Sonos and Sonance. Bursting with full, rich sound, the speakers were built to withstand the elements including humidity, water, salt spray, heat, UV rays, and freezing temperatures. Powered by a Sonos Amp, the duo can provide full surround-sound within the rest of the house, or churn out their own playlist.

Whether you’re watching college football or a Disney movie, TV viewing just hits differently when done outside, and this SunBrite LED 4K all-weather television is going to make the dream a reality. Made for full-shade areas (the brand also offers partial-sun and full-sun options that cost a lot more), the 4K UHD HDR screen has a LED backlight that is nearly 50% brighter than indoor TVs. Beyond that, the Veranda has a durable aluminum casing that protects against rain, snow, extreme temperatures, dust, salt and bugs. Oh, and it comes with a waterproof remote control!

Anyone who’s ever juggled an appetizer plate and a glass of wine at a party knows that these mini boards by Frontgate are genius (and germaphobe-friendly!). Made from mango wood, the wine boards can accommodate charcuterie galore, and they are notched to hold your wine glass, ensuring your guests will have a free hand while eating and drinking the night away.

Perhaps the most adorable mugs we’ve ever seen, these ceramic cuties are equally perfect for post-sledding hot chocolate and late-night hot toddies. Available in navy and red, the vintage inspired mugs are utterly festive and can also double as an entertaining catchall for utensils, straws or candy canes on your buffet.

Why order a pizza when you can make one that tastes 100 times better at home? Enter: Ooni.

The Koda 12 takes just 15 minutes to heat up, and after that the propane gas-powered oven can churn out a bubbly, gooey Neapolitan pizza every 60 seconds. Whether you opt to keep your Ooni permanently outside (a cover is available for purchase) or bring it out just when you’re hosting pizza night (it only weighs 20 pounds), your guests are never going to want to go home once they’ve tasted the goods. Read our Ooni review here.

If you want your guests to think you’re a true pit master, look no further than the Big Green Egg. A multi-hyphenate if there ever was one — it can grill, smoke, roast, sear and even bake a pie — the kamado-style has been beloved by the grilling community since it debuted in 1974 because its ceramic sidewalls and lids are unparalleled when it comes to holding heat, and because it’s charcoal burner delivers a delicious smoky taste and beautiful char texture. More to know: Better than an oven, the Egg’s superior air flow system gives incredibly precise temperature control, which can go all the way up to 750 degrees.

In case you missed it: You don’t have to head to a stone yard to find countertops anymore! Home Depot is simplifying the stone process, and with the help of a trusted authorized fabricator, you can now sample, design, fabricate and install an outdoor kitchen counter — and you can do it all online. If you’re creating an outdoor kitchen area to flank your grill, Cosentino USA’s Dekton is a great option because it’s maintenance-free, requires zero sealing (like… ever) and is highly resistant to pretty much anything you throw at it, including UV rays, extreme weather, stains or impacts. If it sounds indestructible, that’s because it is!

Up the fun-factor at your next outdoor fete with this hilarious Shot Ski from Mark & Graham. Made from a full-sized arjun wood ski, the piece holds four glass shot glasses and can also be monogrammed with up to 12 characters.

For anyone looking to upgrade their propane grill, the Victory is a top pick from Stutes. “We love this gas grill because of its all-stainless steel construction and infrared side searing burner that provides steakhouse-quality results,” he says, adding, “Those features along with its lifetime warranty make this a grill worthy of all backyards.”

Covering your head is the best way to keep the rest of your body warm this winter, this adorable, fleece-lined beanie from Hat Attack is going to do just that. Thick and cozy, the hat also has a cute, oversized pom topper.

Beloved by professional skiers and amateurs alike, pretty much all of Stio’s cold-weather gear is top-notch and that includes this super warm hooded jacket. Available in seven colorways and sizes XXS to XXL, the jacked is packed with 800-fill goose down, which is encased in a water-repellent nylon fabric (that’s also 100% recycled) — meaning you’re guaranteed to be warm and dry when you put it on. Check out the women’s version here.

Being warm doesn’t mean you have to eschew style. Case in point: This puffer jacket from eco-friendly brand Save the Duck! Packed with a dense, down-free filling, the jacket is windproof — and cozy, thanks to the faux collar trim. More to know: Available in five colorways, the making of each Moma jacket also saves 25 ducks’ lives.

Nothing warms you up on a cold day quite like a quality cashmere sweater like this gorgeous option from Vineyard Vines. Perfect for dressing up or down, the sweater comes in four colorways and XXS to 3X.

It can’t hurt to have a bunch of HotHands packets at the ready during your next party, as they’re clutch in keeping hands warm — in between sips of a beverage, of course! Each packet contains two hand warmers that, once shaken, emit a cozy warmth for ten hours.

Like a North Face jacket, but for your feet, these ThermoBall shoes are a cult-favorite for the brand — with more than a thousand positive reviews! — because they pair dense insulation with a rugged sole that can provide traction and grip for even the slipperiest of surfaces. Available in 11 color combinations, the shoes are available for women and kids, too.

25 artificial Christmas trees that look like the real thing | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

If you’re overwhelmed by the sea of artificial Christmas tree options on the market, fear not — we’re here to help.

According to Sarah Fishburne, director of trend and design at The Home Depot, there are a few things to keep in mind when shopping artificial. First up: “Choose a tree whose top falls at least 6 inches below your ceiling,” she says, adding, “Make sure you measure the width of your room for the best fit. Even if you’ve got enough height to display your tree and topper, the wrong width will make placement and decorating inconvenient.”

Regardless of their aesthetic, the best part of fake Christmas trees is that most come pre-lit, are incredibly easy to assemble and — oh, right — they don’t need watering! Below we’ve rounded up the best faux trees to buy right now, from towering to tiny tabletop options.

A Home Depot bestseller, this Jackson Noble Fir look-alike comes in three sizes (7.5, 9 and 12 feet tall) and is chock-full of tips and lights (more than 4,000 tips and 1,200 lights alone for the 7.5-footer!). Featuring quick-setup technology, the tree comes in three pieces that easily attach in minutes, and it comes with a remote and an on/off foot pedal that can control the eight light settings, which include all-white and color options.

Sand & Stable Green Artificial Spruce Christmas Tree With Lights

Sand & Stable Green Artificial Spruce Christmas Tree with Lights

Meet Wayfair’s top-selling tree of 2020! Boasting more than 7,600 positive reviews and a 4.6-star rating, this tree comes in six heights — from 4.5- to 9-feet tall — and is a fan favorite for its easy assembly (it’s broken into two or three sections depending on the size) and its lifelike appearance. And let’s not forget that great price.

Grandin Road Classic Slim Christmas Tree

    From $263.20 at Grandin Road

    Grandin Road Designer Lit Tree

Available in 7.5- and 9-foot heights, the Grandin Road beauty is slim in size — its ranges from 43 to 52 inches in diameter — making it the perfect tree for a tight space. We love that it’s swathed in thousands (literally!) of lights too.

National Christmas Tree Company 4-Foot Pre-Lit Kincaid Spruce

If you’re looking for a bargain, this 4-foot tree comes pre-lit with white lights and a stand. Set up in minutes — all you need are a ton of gorgeous ornaments, and Target’s got lots of those.

Steelside Isenhour Green Artificial Christmas Tree with Clear/White Lights

A top seller for Wayfair, this pre-lit pine replica has more than 2,700 positive reviews, not to mention a 4.7-star rating. Available in three heights, the abundant tree comes in three sections, has thick, natural-looking branches and is flocked with 70 pine cones. According to one reviewer, “This tree is everything I was hoping for and more. The look is elegant but natural.”

More to know: A matching 9-foot garland is also available.

National Tree Company 6.5-Foot Feel Real Jersey Fraser Slim Fir Artificial Christmas Tree

Not quite a super-slim tree (those typically come in around 30 to 40 inches in diameter) but also not a full-bodied tree (which hover around 60-plus inches), this Jersey Fraser fir artificial clone is juuuust right when it comes to width. Available in two heights, the pre-strung tree has an abundance of branch tips (1,650 and 2,468, to be exact), and we can attest that it’s super easy to put together IRL. Perfect for small spaces that can handle the height but not a huge footprint, this tree is your solution.

Frontgate Starry Night Microlight Slim Profile Tree

We know, we know, there’s going to be some sticker shock here. But like all things from Frontgate, this tree is pure luxury. The cream of the artificial crop, the Fraser fir is not only realistic in its appearance, but it’s also gorgeous, thanks to an abundance of lights — 4,300 LEDS on the 7.5-foot size alone! — and the fact that it’s incredibly easy to assemble and store when the holidays are over.

Beachcrest Home Dunhill Fir 10-Foot Green Fir Artificial Pre-Lit Christmas Tree

Not all artificial trees are created equally, and we can attest that this one from The Holiday Aisle stands above the crowd…literally! At 10 feet tall, the lifelike green fir boasts more than 5,000 branch tips, resulting in a super-lush and authentic appearance in real life.

The Dunhill arrives in four sections and is easily assembled; the longest part of the process is fluffing the branches, given the tree’s towering height. We love how the lights are evenly dispersed from the tips to the interior trunk, and that replacement bulbs are included. More to know: If one bulb burns out, the rest of the strand stays on.

Valley Fir LED Lit Faux Christmas Tree

This gorgeous option from Balsam Hill is an incredibly realistic standout because it’s modeled after real firs from Maine, with “true needles” that mimic the color and texture of real evergreen trees. Pre-lit with either clear or clear and multicolored lights (we love to see the optionality!), the Valley Fir comes in 6.5-, 7.5- and 9-foot sizes, each of which is well worth the purchase. We had the chance to see one in real life and trust us when we say she’s a beaut.

    Grandin Road Woodside Christmas Tree

    Grandin Road Woodside Christmas Tree

If you’re looking for a big ol’ tree for your family to gather round this year, this is it. From Grandin Road’s holiday collection, the Woodside is a classic evergreen option, chock-full of thousands of branch tips (4,868 for the 7.5-footer, and 8,248 for the 9-footer!), resulting in a tree that is both extra large and super realistic in appearance.

We tested it out IRL and can confirm the quick-connect pole system makes setup a breeze and that it’s incredibly dense and lush — the perfect main tree for any home with the space to accommodate its grander footprint.

Greyleigh Nordic Spruce Green Artificial Christmas Tree

Full and gorgeous, this artificial spruce will have your guests fooled that it’s actually the real thing. Featuring more than 3,700 branch tips for the 7.5-footer and 5,000 for the nine-footer, the Nordic spruce from Wayfair brand Greyleigh will make a splash, whether you have it making a statement in your front entryway or commanding the corner of your family room. More than 800 positive reviews and a 4.8-star rating confirm this is worth the investment — as did our reviewer who tested it IRL and said that, once fluffed, the tree was “magical” and that “it’s nearly impossible to tell that it’s faux!”

“I fully expected to be disappointed with some aspect of it, but when it arrived it was just as beautiful in person,” one reviewer Wayfair attests, adding, “[The] tree is nice and full and holds up all of my heavy ornaments.”

Fraser Hill Farm Foxtail Pine Christmas Tree

Fraser Hill Farm Foxtail Pine Christmas Tree, Various Sizing and Lighting Options

If a truly lifelike faux tree is a must for you, then head straight to Fraser Hill Farm, which has loads of options — our favorite of which is this Foxtail Pine that has a lovely, natural silhouette, and extended branch lengths that make for easy ornament hanging. Available in a variety of sizes and lighting configurations, the tree’s PVC needles are both flame-retardant and nonallergenic. Done and done!

Balsam Hill BH Balsam Fir Premium 6.5-Foot Artificial Christmas Tree

Balsam Hill’s artificial trees are leaders when it comes to ultrarealistic artificial options. In addition to their aforementioned “true needles,” the trees also have upward-sloping branches and a teardrop shape that will have everyone asking, “Is that real? Or is it fake?”

    Frontgate Noble Fir Full-Profile Tree

All of Frontgate’s faux trees are impressively realistic, this noble fir included. Plump and dense, the tree comes in three sizes, each one bursting with branch tips and warm white LED lights that last for 10,000 hours. Including a remote and a steel-coated tree stand, the tree comes in multiple sections, each one labeled for easy assembly.

One happy customer has this to say: “It is stunning and stands so majestically. The needles do not look artificial, and the lights are positioned perfectly. We could not be happier with this purchase.”

Freshly Fallen Snowcrest Slim Profile Tree

Flocked trees are having a moment, and no one is doing the aesthetic better than Frontgate. Boasting a “fresh dusting” of snow on all of its 1,600-plus tree tips, this slim tree is available in 7.5-, 9- and 10-foot heights, and features an equally hefty amount of lights — ensuring your sparkling tree can and will be seen through windows by passersby. Our reviewer loved the pre-labeled sections that made assembly a breeze, and the ultra-strong steel gauge wiring in the tree tips that can easily support even the biggest of ornaments. More to know: The included powder-coated steel tree stand is incredibly sturdy.

Home Accents Holiday Sparkling Amelia Pine LED Pre-Lit Artificial Christmas Tree

Home Depot is a holiday HQ for most people, and this is the flocked tree the brand’s loyal shoppers are flocking to — pun intended! — this season. With nearly 800 positive reviews, this gorgeous tree is available in four heights (7, 7.5, 9 and 12 feet tall) and features not only a hefty dose of faux snow but also a slew of cute pine cones! More to know: The tree sets up quickly, thanks to its sections, and the on/off foot pedal makes for easy managing all season long.

Birch Lane Sierra 7.5-Foot White Spruce Artificial Christmas Tree

Let us count the ways we love this pretty tree! Lightly flocked to look as if it has been freshly dusted with snow, the artificial white spruce contains more than 2,800 branch tips and 750 clear lights, making for one heck of an elegant tree. With 249 reviews and a 4.8-star rating, it’s a favorite among Birch Lane customers too.

Grandin Road Aspen Pine Flocked Tree

    From $439.20 at Grandin Road

Grandin Road Aspen Pine Flocked Tree

Another gorgeous flocked option, this tree from Grandin Road is a beautiful Aspen pine replica that looks incredibly lifelike in person. Dense and full of upward-sweeping branches and more than 3,000 tips (4,000 if you spring for the 9-footer!), the tree is an elegant-as-can-be option for any home this winter.

Best Choice Products 9-Foot Snow Flocked Artificial Pine Christmas Tree

More proof the flocked trend is en fuego this year? One of Amazon’s top-selling trees is just that — perfectly peppered with faux snow! With more than 6,200 positive reviews and a 4.7-star rating, the flocked pine is a perennial favorite due to its full appearance and because it’s just so easy to assemble — simply attach the three pieces, fluff the branches and you’re good to go. Available in three heights (7, 7.5 and 9 feet tall), we’re homing in on the 7.5-footer mainly because of its under-$300 price tag. Now that’s a smokin’ deal, folks.

    Artificial Christmas trees with stands

Wondershop 6-Foot Alberta Spruce Artificial Christmas Tree

A Target bestseller, this artificial Alberta spruce from Wondershop has more than 3,700 positive reviews and is ultra lightweight, coming in at just 10 pounds. Constructed of plastic, the tree is perfect for outdoor areas but would be equally at home in your living space. Our favorite detail, however, is the price — 60 bucks is a steal for a tree this big!

Home Accent Holidays 12-Foot Wesley Long Needle Pine Artificial Christmas Tree

If you’ve got soaring ceilings in your home — well, first off, we’re jealous. But secondly, you need a giant tree to show off just how vaulted your space is. And we’ve got just the tree to do it. Coming in at 12 feet tall, this spectacular faux pine from Home Depot is traditional in design, featuring more than 4,000 branch tips, a robust shape and 1,100 warm white LED lights. More than 2,700 shoppers have given the tree, which comes with a folding metal stand, a 4.6-star rating.

National Tree Company North Valley Spruce Artificial Christmas Tree

No surprise here: National Tree Company makes a solid artificial tree. More than 2,800 Amazon reviewers have given the North Valley spruce, which comes in a whopping seven heights, a positive review, with many adding that once “fluffed” the tree looks incredibly real. Pre-strung with white lights and featuring hinged branch construction, it also comes with a sturdy metal stand.

An affordable unlit option, this Goplus pine is indoor- and outdoor-friendly and comes with a sturdy, four-pronged metal stand. With more than 5,400 positive reviews, it’s Amazon’s No. 1 bestseller in Christmas trees — and we have to say, the price can’t be beat.

    Lighted Artificial Fir Christmas Tree

If an all-white winter wonderland is more your taste, check out this fir tree from Birch Lane. Available in four different sizes, this tree quickly breaks up into three separate pieces for easy storage during the off-season.

Balsam Hill BH Fraser Fir Tree

This Balsam Hill tree is a crowd-pleaser on all fronts: realistic-looking, easy to assemble and available in sizes to suit any space. Plus, it comes with a foot pedal so you can adjust the lights on your tree without even lifting a finger.

    Lightkeeper Pro

We know, we know, this isn’t a tree — and this story is all about trees! — but listen, this is the holiday product everyone needs to know about this year. Dubbed the Lightkeeper Pro, this handy, gun-shaped tool instantly repairs broken incandescent and LED light sets with a pull of the trigger. How? The tool shoots a pulse through the light set, finds the bad bulb and then somehow mini-welds and activates the shunt — which results in a fully working set of lights! With more than 6,000 positive Amazon reviews and a sub-$30 price tag, this is a holiday no-brainer. If you deal mostly with LED lights these days, you’ll want to pick up this version.

The 18 best fall candles that smell amazingly warm and cozy | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

Fall is the perfect season to nest at home and create a cozy refuge, and what better way to set the mood than with a deliciously scented candle? Whether you love pumpkin spice or think something woodsy is nice, there’s a candle for you.

“If you are a big fan of fall, it’s fun to find a candle that represents the moods, foods and celebrations that make you love the season,” Snif co-founder Phil Riportella says. “We’ve noticed people gravitate towards pumpkin, cinnamon, cedar, maple and apple scents because they remind us of our favorite autumn memories, like baking your ‘secret’ family recipe, or taking a weekend trip to your favorite hiking spots.”

We’ve come to associate most woody, spicy and sweet notes with that cozy essence of fall, but Julien Provost — creative director of Trudon, the oldest candlemaker in the world, and its sister brand Carrière Frères — says that there are plenty of options for those who don’t like the gourmand and sugary notes of pumpkin spice, apple pie and the like. “Scents like leather, cashmere wood, incense, musk, cedarwood and, of course, fir tree can be beautiful alternatives to the usual scents of the holiday season,” he says.

Whatever you decide to burn, it’ll set the mood, spark memories and create an inviting atmosphere. With that in mind, peruse our 18 favorite fall candles that will transport you to your ideal autumnal oasis.

    $145 at Ssense

    Ssense

Spella is one of Provost’s personal favorites these days, and one he says is a great substitute for the saccharine and cinnamon-filled scents commonly found in the fall. The woody oriental candle melts through rich and inviting notes of cedarwood, patchouli, musk, amber and vanilla.

Trudon’s sister brand, Carrière Frères, has an equally esteemed history dating back to 1884. Since then, it has celebrated botanical ingredients with each candle dedicated to the purest aromas. Provost loves the dry and comforting notes of cedarwood for the colder months, as it infuses the purifying scent of a forest into the air. If you’re looking for something a bit spicier, he also loves the Siberian Pine and Candied Ginger candle from the winter collection.

31 products that will get you the Kardashian kitchen of your dreams | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

While the Kardashians are known for being anything but subdued, all of the sisters infuse that must-have design vibe into their luxury homes. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Kim Kardashian’s minimalist, monochromatic kitchen. Similar to the color palette of her Skims lingerie pieces, Kardashian’s kitchen is 50 shades of beige — and not surprisingly, this is the aesthetic now dominating the kitchen market.

Photographed for Architectural Digest in 2020 and viewed perpetually in the background on Hulu’s “The Kardashians” series, Kim’s kitchen is as serene as they come, mixing light woods, natural stones, open shelving and cream linens amid soaring ceilings and lots of California light.

“Over the last few decades, the function of the kitchen has changed,” says Marie Flanigan, principal designer at Marie Flanigan Interiors, which just recently launched a rug collab with Annie Selke. “No longer are kitchens solely a place to cook; they are an additional living space. Whether preparing a meal for family, entertaining friends or providing a spot for homework, a sense of calm and order is necessary in this typically busy room. We are seeing that need for serenity reflected in current kitchen designs.”

Summing it up, Bridgette Caporaso, principal designer at Sketch a Design Studio, says, “The world is full of chaos these days, there’s constant sensory overload everywhere you look. I think people in 2022 have realized that their homes are their sanctuary, and kitchens are the epicenter of our homes. Soothing earth tones and organic materials make us comfortable, making it easier to relax and enjoy yourself.”

And more Americans than ever are chasing this idea. According to Houzz’s 2022 Kitchen Trends Study, homeowners’ median spend on kitchen remodels went up a whopping 25% since 2020.

First things first: Identify how long you plan to be in this space. “When you’re designing your kitchen, it’s important to ask yourself how long you’re going to live in the home,” says Massimo Ballucchi, vice president of kitchen and bath sales at Cosentino North America, the luxury countertop maker behind brands like Silestone, Dekton and Sensa. “If it’s your forever home, it’s important to prioritize personalized design that will bring you joy every day. But if a move in the coming years may be in your future, it’s important to consider what will appeal to prospective buyers.”

Once you’ve crossed that bridge, next up is nailing Kardashian’s neutral, monochromatic color scheme. Whereas all-white kitchens dominated a few years ago, today’s palette is creamier (a la Kim’s) — still feeling crisp and clean, but with added warmth and less sterility. “Many clients are looking to do a little something different and more personalized after seeing bright white kitchens for so many years,” says Jennifer Melone, a New Jersey-based architect and designer with Melone Architects. “Monochromatic kitchens punch up the design quotient, while still keeping the overall feeling serene and relaxed.”

While achieving serenity sounds a bit nebulous, White Arrow co-founder and principal designer Keren Richter has some very specific action points. “To create a ‘serene’ feeling I’d eliminate clutter and bring in a soft palette and natural lighter-toned woods,” she says. “I prefer kitchens where the cabinetry runs up to the ceiling and when paneling hides the more utilitarian aspects of everyday life (e.g. an appliance garage to hide toasters). I also prefer when everything has a place, including hidden trash and recycling components. Having paneled appliances helps a kitchen feel cohesive and more calming.”

Paint color and cabinetry aside, lighting is another major focal point in your kitchen, the importance of which can’t be underestimated. “Lighting is the jewelry in the room,” says Hudson Valley Lighting Group creative director Ben Marshall. “Light guides us, shows us the way and delights our senses. The fixtures we choose are important as they are a key investment to our mood.”

Ready for your Kardashian-approved serene kitchen? Us too. To get us both there, here’s a list of totally tranquil kitchen must-haves — from small appliances and decorative items like stone pitchers to stools, stunning pendant lights and other kitchen essentials — that are beloved by experts and us editors alike.

    $39.95 at Williams-Sonoma

Tiny but mighty, the spoon rest is the workhorse of the kitchen — so much so that I’m planning on scooping up two of these. Durable and beautiful all at once, Williams Sonoma’s marble kitchen utility items, including a chic paper towel holder, a trivet and utensil holder, will uplift and blend into the space, rather than cluttering up your counter.

From $7.95 per sample and $58.50 per square foot at The Home Depot

    Silestone Calacatta Gold Countertop

“Silestone’s Calacatta Gold is one of our top sellers because it captures that timeless appeal of calacatta marble,” says Ballucchi of the quartz stone that is non-porous and next to impossible to stain, scratch or scorch. “A key element to creating a serene kitchen lies in selecting materials that require zero maintenance and will beautifully endure everyday wear and tear.” Young Huh, owner of Young Huh Interior Design, adds, “My clients are always asking for more sustainable, eco-friendly materials, and I love showing them beautiful options with smaller carbon footprints, especially for the kitchen. Silestone allows for engineered quartz to be produced with 100% reusable energy, with 99% of water reused in its production. It’s been revolutionary.”

Farmhouse Pottery Handmade Kitchen Scrub Brush & Holder Set with Natural Fiber Bristles

Cleaning tools — but make them fashion! Combining a beechwood handle and plant-fiber bristles, this scrub brush set is the opposite of the plastic ones you’d find at the grocery store. “In my kitchen, I use a brush and dish set in place of an average sponge,” says Chango & Co. creative director Susana Simonpietri. “It’s beautiful and (I think) actually more functional, too.”

    $39.95 at Williams-Sonoma

    Shaws 30

Built to last, House of Rohl’s Shaws sinks are the industry standard when it comes to quality and design. Yep, they cost a pretty penny, but they’re hand-sculpted and -finished in England and made from a stain- and chip-resistant fireclay that is hand-stamped by the artisan who makes it. “A classic farmhouse sink also adds a classic character to any kitchen,” says Schmid.

From $7.95 per sample and $95.40 per square foot at The Home Depot

    Dekton Aura

Fun Dekton fact: You can place a scalding hot, straight-from-the-oven casserole directly onto its surface and it won’t even leave a mark (no more trivets!). Nor will nail polish, an actual flame or pretty much any other kitchen- or kid-related danger. “If you open a bottle of red wine with family or friends and you’re on guard to make sure your counters don’t stain, that isn’t a serene experience for anyone,” says Ballucchi, explaining that Dekton is made from a blend of raw materials that are treated with heat and pressure, becoming virtually indestructible. “Selecting non-porous, ultra-durable materials that require zero maintenance and will beautifully endure everyday wear and tear will bring you that peace of mind every day.”

    $135 at W&P

    W&P Porter 8-Piece Fridge Bundle

Say adios to single-use plastic with the W&P’s kitchen storage line. Dubbed Porter, the monochromatic collection includes silicone bags for storing leftovers, seal-tight bowls and glasses for keeping perishable items fresh, and even snack bags for, um, snacking. Dishwasher-, microwave- and freezer-safe, all of the Porter items are BPA-free, but our favorite detail is just how serene they look when clustered together in your fridge or countertop. A pantry-friendly bundle is also available, as are bento-style lunch boxes.

  • The all33 Axion office chair helped fix my work-from-home posture | CNN Underscored

The all33 Axion office chair helped fix my work-from-home posture | CNN Underscored

    [ad_1]

The all33 Axion may be a mouthful for an office chair, but if you’re looking to improve your posture and alleviate back pain, Axion has 33 reasons and the chiropractor is just one.

All33’s Axion touts a distinguished pedigree. Designed in collaboration by the celebrity chiropractor of the Los Angeles Clippers and a former BMW designer, it uses a curved cushion and proprietary Sit in Motion technology to help stack all 33 vertebrae of your spine into perfect position.

After spending nearly two uncomfortable, pandemic years hunched over my dining room table on a pretty leather chair, while my husband hogged our office, I was ready to try something designed explicitly for long days of working from home.

Thankfully, the atypical design of the all33 Axion held up to its VIP testimonials — adding up to a satisfying and frankly, enlightening experience for my back, neck and home office.

    $999 $849 at All33

    All33

If you’re willing to invest in an office chair specifically designed to improve your WFH posture and reduce pain, the $999 all33 Axion is well worth the money.

When I emerged from Covid lockdown, it was a huge bummer to find that I had developed a small hump (yes, a hump) on my neck — from spending all those hours staring down at my laptop screen. That landed me squarely in physical therapy, where I was told that this was becoming a common malady cutely dubbed ”Tech Neck.”

After six weeks of targeted exercises to bid farewell to that not-so-cute hump, I promised to never let my posture take a turn for the worse again. And the first thing on my list was finding the right ergonomic desk chair for my (now vacated by my husband) home office. I decided to try the all33 Axion, because in addition to helping to align my vertebrae, it is also designed to keep your body in subtle motion throughout the day.

    all33 axion 1

    Tobey Grumet

The all33 Axion’s box contains five pieces. But unlike some Ikea-type assembly I’ve dealt with in the past, the instructions were clear and it was a cinch to put together. All by myself. Without any swearing or name-calling. My chair is all black vegan leather, though it does come in both red and tan hues as well. You can also choose fabric in those same colors for the same price.

Once I pieced the chair together, I was admittedly a little bemused at the dual combo of curved cushion and swivel style bucket seat. It’s definitely not your mom’s office chair. But it felt sturdy and I was happy with its strong build and solid quality.

The wheels don’t have locks, but they also aren’t sliding around whenever you move, which I appreciated. If you want to move the chair, you’ll have to do it purposefully. The seat height goes from 19 to 23 inches and it swivels from side to side. The website says it can hold up to 275 pounds and suggests that anyone under 5’4” use a footrest.

Related: The best ergonomic mouse to keep your wrist safe

    all33 axion 2

    Tobey Grumet

Here’s where things get good. The entire design forces you into near perfect posture while simultaneously keeping you from remaining sedentary for hours at a time.

That Sit in Motion (yeah, its patented) seat might look odd, but that’s because it’s built to move up and down with your body. The idea, according to Dr. Colonello, is that yes, prolonged sitting is not good for anyone’s chiropractic health. But it’s the type of sitting we do in front of our computers all day that can lead to those nasty back and neck problems.

Put that mobility together with the elliptical-shaped, contoured cushion which fits directly into your lower back, and you’ll be compelled to sit with your back straight, chest up and shoulders back. I mean, you can listen to me, or you can believe Justin Bieber, one of Colonello’s celebrity clients who, in addition to pepping up his posture, also figured out how to shoot a basketball and do an ab workout while sitting in the all33 Axion.

That said, for normal schlubs like me, this chair is a revelation. Of course, you could cheat and move your butt to the front of the seat and still find a way to hunch over. But if you place your behind all the way in the back, you will have a hard time doing anything but sitting up straight with the prompt of that lumbar cushion. And it’s not like I had to think about it. It just happened. In fact, after about an hour, I could feel the difference in the muscles of my lower back and shoulders. It’s also almost impossible to lean all the way back, though if you do, you’re not encouraged to stay there for long.

During my initial physical therapy, I was told to stop a few times during the day, lace my fingers behind my head and push out my elbows, in the hopes to make sure I would keep my posture straight and not fall back into my old, hunchback ways. When I tried that exercise in the chair, I was pleased to see that my shoulders and head were exactly where they were supposed to be.

And don’t worry, the motion of the chair really is subtle. So no, I wasn’t doing ab crunches like Bieber, but when I moved my legs or swiveled around, the all33 Axion just moved right along with me.

“We’re doing much more static sitting which can cause immense harm to the body since it’s designed to move,” Dr. Colonello said, when I asked about the pandemic’s shift from the workforce to being mainly remote, via email. “The all33 chair is unique in the sense that you can sit all day, not feel tired, and not have that creeping, slouching feeling that makes you feel like you’re cutting off your breathing and hurting your neck.”

In addition to adjusting the height, you can also stiffen the chair’s tilt tension and even lock it completely if you so choose. For me, both those things added to the all33’s movement experience so I didn’t bother modifying.

The all33 Axion is an investment. You can grab it for $999 on the all33 website, marked down from the original $1,399. And it’s not even real leather. So, although celebs like Chelsea Handler and Dee Snider are also quoted as being fans, the rest of us may not be ready to throw nearly $1,000 at an office chair.

My one big complaint with the all33 Axion chair is its lack of adjustable armrests. Yes, you can flip them up and down, but if your desk doesn’t match their height, you’re out of luck. Unfortunately, this was the case with my set-up so I had to buy myself a wrist rest for my mouse and an ergonomic keyboard. Definitely not a deal breaker but frustrating for the price.

Our current favorite office chair is the Steelcase Series 1, and it kept our reviewer comfy and sitting up straight for a more affordable $486 (it’s currently even less on Amazon right now). The Steelcase also comes in a wider range of colors, if you want something that’s not black, red or beige. Neither one is made of real leather, but the Steelcase Series 1 is more flexible, letting you adjust not only the arm height, but also the lumbar and arm caps.

But, if you don’t mind spending the cash on an office chair which can also double as a gorgeous piece of furniture, you may want to consider the Herman Miller Aeron Chair (starting at $1,645), which also has an adjustable lumbar and happens to be one of the most stylish and comfortable chairs we tested.

The all33 Axion is a stunner of an office chair for anyone who, like me, needs a serious ergonomics boost. A compelling design, crafted by a well-known chiropractor and an industrial designer, makes for an almost foolproof way to keep you honest when it comes to better posture in your home office.

The constant movement of the seat combined with a fixed lumbar cushion also helps to make it a one-of-a-kind, and almost impossible to slouch when sitting. But unlike the comparably priced Herman Miller Aeron, it’s not nearly as beautiful to look at.

As Justin Bieber so patently puts it, “it’s the chair that moves like I do.” And quite frankly, when it comes to sitting up properly, you really will go love yourself. Now you just have to decide if that’s worth $999.

    CNN
     —

Whether you’re in the balmy climes of Florida or crisp fall temps of New England, we all have one thing in common this time of year: Halloween!

And while parents around the world are fielding their kiddo’s costume ideas (and trying to avoid those last-minute stressors), we in the interior design community are channeling all of the haunted vibes straight into our homes. That’s right, it’s time to turn our normally stately abodes into the spooktacular haunts we know they can be.

Fear not: Halloween decor doesn’t have to be all witches, skeletons and screaming bats (though we’re not mad at those over-the-top decorations!). If you’re looking for something a bit more sedate this fall, we’ve found all the things that can satisfy your holiday decoration cravings, minus the chintz.

    $99.50 at Grandin Road

Set a ghostly tone with this tattered cotton cheesecloth scarf that can be draped on your mantle, buffet, tabletop or even stair railings this Halloween.

Hyde & EEK! Boutique 60-Inch-by-84-Inch Lace Halloween Tablecloth

Turn your fall dinner party into a spooky affair with this lace tablecloth that evokes a massive cobweb. It can be used solo or layered over another color to truly show every creepy detail. More to know: It comes in a runner too.

    Ashland 18” Black Feather Wreath

Avant-garde, creepy and beautiful all at once, this black feather wreath from Michaels is a sleek way to gussy up a doorway in your home this Halloween season.

    Skull Candle Holders

It’s not really Halloween if you don’t have a few skulls involved, right? Right. We love this silly set of three, mimicking the old “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” adage, and think they’re perfect for mantels and coffee tables alike. Plus, they’re candle holders so you can really make them pop with your best flickering flames.

Threshold 3” Stoneware Web Serving Platter

Keep the spook going with this web serving platter. In addition to having a festive vibe, this plate’s raised edges also help prevent any scary spills or stains from spoiling the fun.

Kiddos and adults alike await Halloween with much anticipation, which is why this “countdown to” block is a fun addition to your decor. Keep “The Nightmare Before Christmas”-themed piece up year-round as you count down the days till Halloween is finally here. Bonus: The block comes with a Christmas sign, which means you can count down to that other big holiday too.

    Elm Street Sign

If you’re an ‘80s baby, then it’s safe to say you’re still terrified of “A Nightmare on Elm Street” villain Freddy Kreuger — and you can channel that terror right into your home now, thanks to this Elm Street sign! Place it on a bookshelf, above a bathroom or really anywhere you want to scare the pants off yourself, your family or your guests.

And we’re truly stoked that they come in a Halloween-friendly scent, smelling of fresh pumpkin, butter and brown sugar mixed with notes of creamy vanilla, toasted pecans and warm spices housed in a stainless steel countertop caddy. The set is something you’ll want to be using all year long.

    ElegantWreath Pumpkin Pie Fall Wreath
