With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, my boyfriend and I decided to opt out of the traditional festivities this year. This is our fifth Valentine’s Day together, and neither of us felt like duking it out over Resy or OpenTable for a restaurant reservation on arguably the biggest date night of the year — been there, done that. But, we still wanted to do a little something, so when I got the opportunity to test the Make Your Own Chocolate Truffles Kit from Uncommon Goods, I happily volunteered, and we celebrated early. We’re both millennials, so we love a slightly stressful activity.

Uncommon Goods is home to many DIY kits and unique gifts. Whenever I’ve bought a present from there, it’s a hit, so I had high hopes for this kit, which shoppers can combine with the Death by Chocolate: Truffles online experience on Uncommon Goods for a total of $75. Though I’m not always the most confident baker, I thought that together we could likely figure it out.

What Is the Make Your Own Chocolate Truffles Kit?

The Uncommon Goods Chocolate Truffles Kit contains most of what you need to make a total of 36 truffles of various flavors, including a very essential thermometer. It comes with two 8-ounce bags of 55% dark chocolate chips, organic cocoa powder, organic coconut flakes, sea salt, peppermint extract, and vanilla extract, along with very detailed instructions that you can peruse here.

But there are a few things that you’ll need to purchase: heavy whipping cream or coconut cream, butter, and parchment paper. You’ll also require a 9-inch-by-13-inch baking pan or three smaller pans if you plan on making all three flavors (regular, peppermint, and vanilla). It also would be beneficial to have a cookie scoop, so you can get perfectly round truffles. I used a small spoon, and the truffles varied in size.

Why I Love the Make Your Own Chocolate Truffles Kit

I started this kit with some trepidation, because making a ganache and tempering chocolate sounds scary and like part of a challenge on The Great British Baking Show. I read some shopper reviews to see if they had any hacks for making this easier. The instructions called to freeze the various ganaches after you make them, and heat the chocolate, and then cool the chocolate to 90°F. When my boyfriend and I have made meals kits together, we often get the timing wrong and end up waiting for the side to finish cooking. I knew this would probably be a problem with the truffles. Several reviewers suggested getting the ganaches in the freezer, which takes 45 minutes total, before attempting to temper the chocolate. We made the ganaches, put them in the freezer, ate some takeout pizza while they froze, and then tempered the chocolate. This made the whole process relatively stress-free.

As a huge chocolate truffles fan, I was really impressed by how delicious they were, though the regular truffles were my favorite over the peppermint and vanilla. They didn’t last long in our house. So, if you’re looking for a Valentine’s Day alternative plan, I highly recommend getting this kit — before it sells out!

While I love indulging in an overpriced coffee shop drink a couple times a week, I can’t justify shelling out $10 for it every day. So, I’ve tried a variety of methods to make barista-worthy brews at home so I can save money in the long run. Thankfully, as a shopping editor, I get to try out the best of the best. I’m definitely a creature of habit and don’t typically stray too far from my Clevr Blends, Keurig, or handy pour-over method. But I recently discovered a super fast, indulgent way to elevate black coffee in just seconds at home. After all, it’s about the little things!

Here at The Kitchn, we’ve become regulars at Uncommon Goods. From online classes to a DIY butter candle, they’ve got some seriously unique options in store. So, it comes as no surprise that these gourmet coffee creamer bombs caught my eye — but before we could write about them, they were naturally sold out. But now, they’re back in stock, so you’ll want to add them to your cart before it’s too late (snag for yourself or a gift). If you were a fan of hot cocoa bombs, you’ll want to test these out ASAP.

What are the Uncommon Goods Coffee Creamer Bombs?

This set of six ridiculously pretty coffee creamer bombs is handmade in Georgia and is the ultimate treat for the coffee lover in your life. The set includes a variety of indulgent coffee-shop inspired flavors: vanilla, pumpkin spice, coconut, mocha, caramel, and bourbon. Now, these are definitely not an every day kind of thing, but if you need a pick-me-up and want to take your boring black coffee to another level, they’re perfect to have in your pantry. Or, if you’re someone who likes to keep gifts on hand at all times for those last-minute gifting needs, these are a must-have.

Why I Love the Uncommon Goods Coffee Creamer Bombs

I’m obsessed with these little delicacies because they’re not only gorgeous (hello, golden flakes), but they’re easy to use too. Simply unwrap them from the packaging, carefully place them in your cup of java, and watch them melt into your cup. (Trust me: It’s so satisfying to watch!) Then, you’ll want to stir it into your coffee. Now, if you love the sugary drinks at your favorite coffee shop, you’ll fall for these. I’m not super into rich, sweet coffee drinks, so this is something I won’t be doing regularly, but it’s a nice sweet treat every now and then.

The mix of cafe-quality flavors are sure to delight, and the packaging makes them ready to gift. You could even split up the coffee creamer bombs and gift them to multiple people to get more bang for your buck! Pair them with a coffee mug and some other java tools and you’ve got a foolproof gift anyone will love.

Soap dishes have come a long way. Once upon a time, most of them sported the same basic design, which essentially mimicked a small bowl or plate. Fortunately, the designs then started including drainage holes — in fact, draining dishes made of silicone are particularly popular now thanks to their relative affordability and easy-to-clean material. As someone who has one of these in her own bathroom, however, I can tell you it’s not the most stylish thing in the world. Even if the rest of your sink vanity is tidy and visually pleasing, the wrong dish can single-handedly cheapen the entire aesthetic. And really, there’s no reason why you should have to choose between form and function. There are so many cute sinkside accessories out there, and we came across one that’ll instantly lend a trendy, artistic vibe to your bathroom or kitchen counter. The Zig Zag soap dish from Uncommon Goods is perfect for just about any aesthetic, and at $20, it’s not too bad price-wise, either.

What is the Zig Zag soap dish?

This bathroom and kitchen must-have isn’t so much a dish as it is a piece of decor with a useful function. You’ll notice that it’s made of beige-colored clay and boasts a subtle yet eye-catching speckled finish. This gives the dish an earthy look and makes it easy to match with other items in the room. If you place it in your bathroom, this piece will definitely add a calm, spa-like appeal to your sink area. But if we’re talking about the star feature of the dish, that’s easily its geometric zig-zag silhouette. Not only does it just look cool, but the divoted surface also allows water to run off the soap, preventing your bar from becoming soggy and crumbling before you can use it up. You’ll also find that the dish’s glaze makes the stoneware material easy to wipe clean. Really, adding this piece to your sink setup is a no-brainer.

What Uncommon Goods Reviewers Are Saying

What’s more, the dish will serve as a conversation-starter every time you have guests over, so if you’re looking to impress with your decor, this is the perfect pick for that. You’ll quickly come to find that it’s eye-catching, timeless, and totally practical.
