The fatal crash happened near the intersection of Gaston Day Road and Duke Street in Gastonia, about a 25-mile drive west from uptown Charlotte, police said.

An Uber driver was killed and her passenger was critically hurt when an oncoming Cadillac lost control and slammed “head-on” into the Uber, according to investigators in North Carolina.
The Uber driver has been identified as 53-year-old Janice Lopez, and media outlets report she lived in York County, South Carolina.
The crash happened just after 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, near the intersection of Gaston Day School Road and Duke Street in Gastonia, police said in a Nov. 10 news release.
“A black Cadillac sedan driven by a 19-year-old Gastonia man was heading southbound on Gaston Day at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control, crossed the center line, and collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle operating as an Uber,” police said.
“The Uber driver … was killed. The female passenger in the back seat was critically injured. The crash triggered a chain reaction involving two other vehicles, those drivers were listed in serious condition.”
Identities of the Uber passenger and the other drivers were not released.
Charges have not been filed in the case as investigators wait for toxicology test results, police said.
Uber released a statement to McClatchy News, noting it has “a team of former law enforcement professionals” on call to assist local law enforcement in such investigations.
“We’re heartbroken for the driver’s loved ones, and our hearts are with them as they navigate this unimaginably difficult time,” an Uber spokesperson said . “We’re keeping those injured in our thoughts and stand ready to support police in any way we can.”
Gastonia is about a 25-mile drive west from uptown Charlotte.
