  • Where the DC region’s universities rank in online degree offerings – WTOP News

    Online degree programs at D.C.-area schools are among the highest ranked in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report’s 2026 Best Online Programs.

    Many students earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Maryland, Virginia Tech and George Washington University without setting foot on campus — except at graduation.

    Online degree programs at these and other regional schools make it possible to go to college without moving or commuting. They are also among the highest ranked in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report’s 2026 Best Online Programs.

    “Virtually all U.S. colleges and universities have some form of online or remote education,” said LaMont Jones, U.S. News and World Report’s managing editor for education. “Often it’s completely remote.”

    In the overall bachelor’s degree category, only George Washington University is in the top 30. Its School of Medicine and Health Sciences is in a nine-way tie for 29th place.

    The online master’s programs at Maryland, D.C. and Virginia universities fare better.

    For example, five local universities are in the top 20 for online master’s in engineering: George Washington (number 5), Johns Hopkins University (tied at number 6), University of Maryland-College Park (tied at number 11), Virginia Tech (number 14), and Virginia Commonwealth University (tied at number 18).

    “A correlation between schools that have strong residential programs and strong online programs is that they are not trying to create an entirely new curriculum from scratch,” Jones said.

    “They are using what works in their traditional programs, in their in-person programs, and making that into an online format so that students are getting the same quality of education.”

    Online colleges attract students of all ages and backgrounds. Jones said the largest share of remote graduate students are older, and require more flexibility because of their jobs and families.

    And in online bachelor’s programs, “you also have some more traditional college-age who maybe want to save money and don’t want to spend the money to live on a campus and the related costs,” Jones said.

    The flexibility also extends to admissions deadlines. At many schools, the deadline for in-person enrollment this fall has passed, but their online programs typically accept applications all year.

    Once admitted, students’ start dates are not tied to the traditional academic calendar. Jones said there are programs, using asynchronous learning, with as many as 12 start dates in a year.

  • Long Island hospitals earn top maternity care rankings | Long Island Business News

    • Four hospitals named “High Performing” in national .

    • Rankings reflect outcomes such as C-section rates and newborn complications.

    • Factors also include breast-milk support practices and WHO ‘birthing-friendly’ standards.

    Four of the hospitals ranked “High Performing in National Maternity Care” this year by are based on Long Island.

    They include Hospital in Oceanside and NYU Langone Hospital— Long Island in Mineola, as well as two in the system: in New Hyde Park and South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore.

    The ranking is “a recognition of the labor and teamwork that takes place every day at Mount Sinai South Nassau,” Dr. Alan Garely, who chairs obstetrics and gynecology at the hospital, said in a news release. The hospital – more than 1,867 babies were born there so far this year – was recognized with the “High Performing” designation for the fourth consecutive year.

    “Our physicians, nurses, residents and support staff are committed to providing the best outcomes for mothers and their newborns,” Garely said.

    The rankings assess hospitals that deliver high-quality care for uncomplicated pregnancies, using measures such as C-section and severe newborn complication rates, vaginal birth after cesarean delivery rates, episiotomy rates, breast-milk–support practices, World Organization “birthing-friendly” criteria and tracking of outcome disparities. For the most recent list, 495 hospitals earned a “High Performing” designation for maternity care.

    Dr. Kevin Holcomb, chair of obstetrics and gynecology at and Long Island Jewish Medical Center, pointed out that maternity care is “one of life’s most transformative moments.

    “Our commitment goes beyond medical treatment – we strive to provide a holistic, patient-centered experience that supports mothers through every stage of their pregnancy and childbirth journey,” Holcomb said.

    “ has reduced our Caesarean section rate significantly in the past year,” Dr. Erika Banks, the hospital’s chair of obstetrics and gynecology, said in a written statement.

    “Importantly our primary [NTSV, or nulliparous, term, singleton, vertex] Caesarean rate is below 30 percent,” she said, “qualifying us for our designation as the only perinatal Center of Excellence on Long Island by the Joint Commission since 2019. This designation recognizes excellence in caring for mothers and babies before and after birth.”

    Other organizations on Long Island that have been recognized with Joint Commission perinatal care certification include Mount Sinai South Nassau, according to the hospital’s website; LIJ has been recognized with an Advanced Certification in Perinatal Care, according to the hospital.

    Several D.C.-area campuses are among the best elementary and middle schools in their respective states, according to the latest set of U.S. News and World Report rankings released this week.

    Several D.C.-area campuses are among the best elementary and middle schools in their respective states, according to the latest set of U.S. News and World Report rankings released this week.

    The rankings, which are at the district and state levels and not national, are based on data from the U.S. Department of Education. The publication used state assessment information from the federal agency and applied equal weight to four areas — reading proficiency, reading performance, math proficiency and math performance.

    The outlet also used federal socioeconomic data to show which schools are best educating their students, according to LaMont Jones Jr., managing editor for education at U.S. News and World Report.

    “They’re doing a good job of not just making sure that their students can perform at a certain level that’s expected on basic proficiency, but that they perform at a higher level, and that they do a good job of educating all the students that they have, regardless of their demographic background, their socioeconomic, their ethnicity, anything,” Jones said.

    “They’re doing a good job educating all their students at the highest levels.”

    Ocean City Elementary is listed as Maryland’s top elementary school, followed by Pinewood Elementary in Timonium and Benfield Elementary in Severna Park.

    Glenarden Woods Elementary in Lanham and Bradley Hills Elementary are ranked at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.

    In D.C., Ross Elementary is ranked first overall, followed by Janney Elementary and Key Elementary.

    Old Donation School in Virginia Beach is ranked as Virginia’s best elementary school, followed by Sangster Elementary in Springfield. Arlington Traditional is ranked No. 4 in the state.

    At the middle school level, Alice Deal Middle School ranks first in D.C., followed by Oyster-Adams Bilingual School and Basis DC PCS charter school.

    In Maryland, Clarksville Middle in Howard County tops the list. Thomas W. Pyle Middle in Bethesda is ranked third in the state, and Frederick Classical Charter is ranked seventh overall.

    Old Donation School in Virginia Beach, which serves academically gifted students in grades three through eight, is ranked as Virginia’s top middle school, followed by St. Paul Elementary in Wise County and Mary G. Porter Traditional in Woodbridge.

    Williamsburg Middle in Arlington is No. 4 in the state, and Rocky Run Middle in Chantilly is fifth.

    Jones said the outlet recommends that parents and families use the information “as a starting point, not the end-all-be-all on a decision about where to send their child to school.”

    “Every family situation is different,” Jones said. “Every child’s situation is different.”

  • These Georgia universities are among the 50 best in the country

    A new ranking of the country’s best colleges and universities has gone through 1,700 higher education institutions and determined which ones are top of the class.

    Georgia ended up with three universities ranked in the top 50 nationwide.

    According to U.S. News and World Report, Emory University is the best in the state, coming in at No. 24 on the national ranking.

    The report says that with a total undergraduate enrollment of just over 7,400 and a 9:1 student-faculty ratio, Emory University ranks among most of the other universities nationwide.

    It also mentions that the university has just a 10% acceptance rate, which is the 10th lowest in the country.

    Earlier this month, officials announced that starting with the fall 2026 semester, all students whose parents make less than $200,000 will not have to pay tuition.

    Next up on the list, the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta ranked No. 32 overall.

    But if you remove private universities, Georgia Tech ranks in the top 10 for best public universities at No. 9.

    It was also ranked the third most innovative school.

    But don’t worry, Bulldogs. The University of Georgia in Athens cracked the top 50 by coming in at No. 46.

    Just like Georgia Tech, when looking only at public universities, UGA rises higher in the ranks, coming in at No. 19.

    The report references UGA’s 767-acre campus and undergraduate population of more than 32,000 students, saying that despite having so many students, the student-faculty ratio is still 17:1.

    If you’re not looking to stay in the Peach State, U.S. News and World Report says the country’s best universities are Princeton University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University.

    U.S. News & World Report is out with its 2025 ranking of the nation’s best high schools, and one Virginia high school made the top 10.

    U.S. News & World Report is out with its 2025 ranking of the nation’s best high schools, and one Virginia high school made the top 10.

    Schools making the honor roll in our area include Alexandria’s Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, ranked No. 5 nationally and No. 1 in Virginia. It’s also the 5th ranked STEM school in the nation. Following controversial changes to its admissions policy in 2021 to boost diversity, Thomas Jefferson slipped out of the the top 10 nationally in 2023.

    Langley High in McLean and Woodson High School in Fairfax also ranked in the top five in the state.

    As for Maryland, U.S. News ranked Baltimore’s Eastern Technical No. 125 nationally and No. 1 in the state. Other standout high schools in the state include Walt Whitman (#2), Wootton (#3), Poolesville (#4) and Winston Churchill (#8) — all in Montgomery County.

    In D.C., BASIS DC was ranked No. 139 nationally. Benjamin Banneker Academy High School was ranked No. 178 nationally. In the city, the top-ranked school this year is the School Without Walls, a public magnet high school in Foggy Bottom.

    The top three high schools in the nation:

    2. Signature School, Evansville, Indiana
    3. Central Magnet School, Murfreesboro, Tennessee

    The top three charter schools:

    1. BASIS Tucson North, Tucson, Arizona

    3. The Albuquerque Institute of Math and Science, Albuquerque, New Mexico

    The top three science, technology, engineering & math (STEM) schools:

    1. High Technology High School, Lincroft, New Jersey
    2. BASIS Chandler, Chandler, Arizona
    3. BASIS Peoria, Peoria, Arizona

    The U.S. News Best High Schools rankings evaluate data from over 24,000 public high schools across the country. About 18,000 of those schools were ranked based on six key factors — college readiness, state assessment proficiency, state assessment performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth and graduation rate.
