  • Federal judge blocks Trump’s cuts in FEMA funding

    [ad_1]

BOSTON — The Trump administration can’t block federal disaster relief funding for Massachusetts and other states for refusing to cooperate with immigration crackdowns, a federal judge has ruled.

The ruling by U.S. District Court Judge William E. Smith in Rhode Island sided with Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell and 22 other Democrats who sued to block a Homeland Security policy tying Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster funding to a state’s willingness to cooperate with immigration enforcement.

  • Criminal investigation launched after feds fire pepper ball at CBS Chicago reporter’s truck

CBS Chicago reporter shot at with pepper ball by ICE agent in Broadview

CBS Chicago reporter shot at with pepper ball by ICE agent in Broadview

    02:56

The Village of Broadview said they’ve launched a criminal investigation after a CBS News Chicago reporter had a projectile fired at her vehicle by an ICE agent late Sunday morning.

Reporter Asal Rezaei said there was no active protest or protesters at the facility, and she was alone with no one around her at the time of the incident.

In a report filed with Broadview police, Rezaei said she was driving her truck with her driver’s side window down, while approaching the 25th Avenue entrance to see if any activity was taking place, before leaving the area.

That’s when she said a masked ICE agent, who saw her window down, shot a pepper ball about 50 feet from the inside of the fence, hitting her truck’s driver’s side panel, causing the chemical agents to engulf the inside of her truck.

Rezaei said the pepper ball left white powder on her windshield, and her face had “been on fire for at least the last 10 minutes or so.” The chemical also caused her to vomit once outside of her truck, she said.

In her report, she said, “At this moment it’s not really clear why that officer took a shot at me. My car has been here several times, although I did not identify myself verbally as a member of the press. There were no protests going on,” said Rezaei. “There was actually nobody there except one other person that was a member of a fire department that was there checking in on the buildings around this area.”

Broadview Police Chief Thomas Mills responded to the incident in a statement, saying, “The Village of Broadview Police Department has launched a criminal investigation into an allegedly unprovoked attack on a CBS Chicago TV news reporter’s vehicle by a chemical munition fired from the direction of U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement detention facility. The victim declined medical attention. The Broadview Police Department expects the full cooperation by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security into our criminal investigation.”

CBS News reached out to the Department of Homeland Security but has yet to hear back.

  • Deadly shooting at Dallas ICE facility investigated by FBI as targeted attack; medical examiner identifies victim

    [ad_1]

One person was killed and two people are in critical condition after a shooting at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office in Dallas on Wednesday morning, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Acting ICE director Todd Lyons identified the shooter as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

All three of the victims shot were detainees of the facility, federal authorities said. On Saturday, Sept. 27, the detainee who was killed was identified as 37-year-old Norlan Guzman Fuentes.

DHS issued a correction Wednesday afternoon after previously reporting that two people were killed and one person was in critical condition.

The facility is located along I-35E, just southwest of Dallas Love Field Airport.

Dallas police said officers responded to an assist officer call at the facility around 6:40 a.m. An initial law enforcement report indicated the gunman was positioned at an elevated location. The gunman opened fire from the rooftop of an attorney’s office across the street from the ICE Detention facility, on Empress Street.

Just after 10 a.m., ICE said the scene was secured. According to ICE, the shooter opened fire on the facility, firing “indiscriminately at the building and those in the sallyport.”

“Early evidence that we’ve seen from rounds that were found near the suspected shooter contain messages that are anti-ICE in nature,” said Joe Rothrock, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Dallas field office.

FBI Director Kash Patel posted a photo and wrote, “One of the unspent shell casings recovered was engraved with the phrase ‘ANTI ICE.’”

The Dallas Field Office serves as a temporary holding facility for some detainees. Between January 20 and mid-June, an average of 47 people were held there each day, spending roughly seven hours in detention, according to a CBS News analysis of ICE data compiled by the Vera Institute of Justice and the Deportation Data Project.

The Mexican Consulate in Dallas has confirmed that one of the victims who was shot is a Mexican national.

August bomb threat at same Dallas ICE facility

Wednesday’s shooting was not the first security threat at the Dallas ICE facility, according to DHS.

Approximately one month earlier, DHS reported that a man, later identified as 36-year-old Bratton Dean Wilkinson, a U.S. citizen, approached the field office’s reporting entrance and claimed to have a bomb in his backpack.

Wilkinson allegedly showed a security officer what he described as a “detonator” strapped to his wrist, prompting a shelter-in-place order at the Dallas ICE facility, DHS said. The officer immediately contacted 911, and local law enforcement responded with a bomb squad. Wilkinson was taken into custody and later charged with making terroristic threats, DHS said.

DHS Secretary blames anti-ICE rhetoric for the Dallas shooting

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem condemned the violence and called for a national reckoning on the rhetoric surrounding ICE. Federal officials labeled the incident a targeted assault on law enforcement.

In a strongly worded statement, Noem said:

“Our prayers are with the families of those killed and our ICE law enforcement. This vile attack was motivated by hatred for ICE. For months, we’ve been warning politicians and the media to tone down their rhetoric about ICE law enforcementbefore someone was killed. This shooting must serve as a wake-up call to the far-left that their rhetoric about ICE has consequences. Comparing ICE Day-in and day-out to the Nazi Gestapo, the Secret Police, and slave patrols has consequences. The men and women of ICE are fathers and mothers, sons and daughters. They get up every morning to try and make our communities safer. Like everyone else, we just want to go home to our families at night. The violence and dehumanization of these men and women who are simply enforcing the law must stop. We are praying for the victims and their families.”

Noem also ordered DHS to immediately begin increasing security at ICE facilities across the country.

State, federal lawmakers react to shooting

Local, state and federal lawmakers reacted to the shooting, calling on violence against ICE agents to stop.

“My hearts and prayers go out to my officers and agents, [that’s] my biggest concern as well as everyone in that area but this just shows the violence has been increased against ICE officers and agents,” acting ICE Director Todd Lyons said in an interview with CNN.

Lyons later told CBS News, “He could have, in his indiscriminate fire, hit people traveling to work, civilians on the ground,” calling it “a very scary situation.” He said ICE had already been operating under a “higher threat posture” and said they “won’t be stopped by it.

Sen. Ted Cruz was in Dallas Wednesday morning. He repeatedly said that politically motivated violence needs to stop.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott expressed his support for ICE, saying the state fully supports ICE.

“Both the Texas Dept. of Public Safety & Texas National Guard work closely with ICE. This assassination will NOT slow our arrest, detention, & deportation of illegal immigrants,” he said on X. “We will work with ICE & the Dallas Police Dept. to get to the bottom of the assassin’s motive. We will offer ICE additional support to assist their operations.”

Texas Department of Transportation cameras near the facility showed a heavy first responder presence with dozens of units.

“Please join me in prayer for the injured and their families from this morning’s active shooter incident at the ICE facility in Dallas,” Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins said on X. “Violence and terror is never the answer to anything.”

The Fort Worth Police Department also posted on X, condemning the violence.

“The violence that occurred in Dallas, TX this morning is uncalled for and moments like this are deeply disturbing as it creates more division in our community at a time when the focus needs to be on how we can come together,” the post reads. “We continue to ask our community that if you see something, say something.”

CBS News confirmed that a bomb threat was made to the same office on Aug. 25. A man was arrested and charged after he claimed to have a detonator. He’s been detained for weeks.

Second ICE facility attack in Texas in 2025

A Fourth of July attack at a Texas immigration detention center injured a police officer, who was shot in the neck.

Attackers dressed in black military-style clothing opened fire outside the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, southwest of Dallas, federal prosecutors said. At least 11 people have been charged in connection with the attack.

Attack against CBP federal agents in McAllen, Texas

A man with an assault rifle fired dozens of rounds at federal agents as they were leaving a U.S. Border Patrol facility in McAllen on July 7.

The man, identified as Ryan Louis Mosqueda, injured a police officer who responded to the scene before authorities shot and killed him. Police later found other weaponry, ammunition and backpacks inside his car.

“The obsessive attack on law enforcement, particularly ICE, must stop,” Vice President JD Vance said on X. “I’m praying for everyone hurt in this attack and for their families.”

  • Suspect in Dallas ICE facility shooting was targeting ICE agents, acted alone, federal officials say

    [ad_1]

The shooter who attacked the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Dallas was targeting ICE agents, federal officials said at a news conference Thursday.

Nancy Larson, the acting U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Texas, said a collection of notes found at Joshua Jahn’s residence showed an animus toward ICE agents and that he had been planning the attack for some time. Jahn legally purchased the 8mm bolt-action rifle used in the shooting last month, officials said.

Larson said that early Wednesday morning, Jahn was seen driving his car with a long ladder. Officials believe he used the ladder to access the roof of an office building near the Dallas ICE facility, from where he started firing at about 6:30 a.m.

Larson said he fired rounds the length of the building and intended to damage property, as well as hurt or kill ICE personnel.

The three victims were detainees inside one of the vans Jahn targeted, Larson said. One of them died, and the others are in critical condition. Officials did not provide any more specifics about the victims’ identities.

On Saturday, Sept. 27, the man fatally shot was identified as 37-year-old Norlan Guzman-Fuentes by the Dallas Medical Examiner.

Larson said law enforcement personnel from multiple federal agencies put themselves at risk to move other detainees who were in the vans to safety.

Dallas ICE shooting suspect worked alone, authorities say

Another note found at the suspect’s residence said, “Yes, it was just me,” Larson said.

She and Joseph Rothrock, the FBI special agent in charge of the Dallas field office, both said all of the evidence indicates that Jahn acted alone. Larson also said there was no indication that Jahn was a member of any group.

Rothrock said it was officers from the Dallas Police Department and Dallas County Sheriff’s Office who found Jahn on the rooftop. He was dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Gunman used apps that track ICE agents

Marcos Charles, the ICE executive associate director for enforcement and removal operations, blamed “wild rhetoric” for what he said was a 1,000% increase in assaults on ICE officers.

Charles also said that Jahn used apps that track ICE agents as part of his planning for the attack.

“Anyone who creates or distributes these apps that is designed to spot, track and locate ICE officers, are well aware of the dangers they are exposing to law enforcement,” Charles said.

Multiple apps have sprung up in recent months to warn migrants of potential ICE operations and help them avoid arrest as the Trump administration increased its crackdown on undocumented immigrants.

  • Bondi vows to send Justice Department agents to guard ICE facilities

    [ad_1]

Attorney General Pam Bondi said late Friday she has ordered Justice Department agents to guard Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities — and directed counterterrorism task forces to look into attacks against federal authorities.

The move by Bondi came after one detainee was killed and two others were injured in a shooting at an ICE field office in Dallas on Wednesday, the latest shooting or threat targeting an ICE facility or immigration agent in recent months.

“At my direction, I am deploying DOJ agents to ICE facilities—and wherever ICE comes under siege—to safeguard federal agents, protect federal property, and immediately arrest all individuals engaged in any federal crime,” Bondi wrote on X.

It’s not clear which federal law enforcement agencies will be deployed to ICE facilities. The Justice Department oversees the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the U.S. Marshals Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

ICE has said attacks on its agents have spiked this year, as the Trump administration uses the agency to dramatically increase arrests and deportations of undocumented immigrants. In recent months, ICE operations in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and elsewhere have drawn tense protests and clashes between agents and demonstrators.

Bondi also floated a broader crackdown on “repeated acts of violence and obstruction against federal agents.” She directed the Joint Terrorism Task Forces — which are regional entities scattered throughout the country that work with the FBI and with state and local police — to look into what she described as “domestic terrorism.”

“The Department of Justice will seek the most serious available charges against all participants in these criminal mobs, including conspiracy offenses, assault offenses, civil disorder offenses, and terrorism offenses,” the attorney general wrote Friday.

A day earlier, President Trump signed a memo calling for investigations into “political violence and intimidation,” led by the Joint Terrorism Task Forces. The White House pointed to the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk earlier this month, last year’s assassination attempts against Mr. Trump, and an increase in attacks on ICE officers.

The president also penned an executive order labeling antifa a domestic terrorist organization. The move’s legal implications aren’t clear. Antifa, short for “anti-fascist,” generally refers to a loose collection of largely left-wing activists, not a cohesive organization with a leadership structure. Also, domestic terrorism isn’t a chargeable offense under federal law, and the government doesn’t have a formal list of domestic terrorist groups, unlike with foreign groups.

  • Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent Arrested By Immigration Agents

    [ad_1]

Immigration agents have arrested the superintendent of Des Moines public schools.

Ian Roberts, the first Black superintendent of Iowa’s largest school district and a former Olympic track athlete who competed for Guyana in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, was “detained by Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents this morning,” the school district said in a statement.

“We have no confirmed information as to why Dr. Roberts is being detained or the next potential steps,” the district added while naming an interim superintendent.

At a press conference, Jackie Norris, chair of the Des Moines school board, said the district “did not have all the facts,” but called Roberts “an integral part of our school community since he joined over two years ago.”

Roberts joined the district in 2023 and “has held educational leadership positions in districts across the U.S. for 20 years,” Norris said.

This photo provided by WOI Local 5 News in September 2025 shows Des Moines schools Superintendent Ian Roberts. (WOI Local 5 News via AP)

The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners issued Roberts a license to serve as a superintendent in Iowa in 2023, Norris added, before referring to “new information that has been made public that we did not know, and we have not been able to verify, as to whether that information is accurate.” Officials did not take questions at the press conference.

In a follow-up email, Phil Roeder, a spokesperson for Des Moines Public Schools, said the firm JG Consulting had identified Roberts as a candidate for the superintendent role, “and a third-party comprehensive background check was conducted by Baker-Eubanks.” Roeder added that Roberts had completed an I-9 employment eligibility verification form.

“The district has not been formally notified by ICE about this matter, nor have we been able to talk with Dr. Roberts since his detention,” the email added.

ICE confirmed Roberts’ arrest in a press release and said he came to the United States on a student visa in 1999 and was given a final order of removal by an immigration judge last year. The agency alleged Roberts was working as a superintendent without work authorization.

The release further alleged: “During a targeted enforcement operation on Sept. 26, 2025, officers approached Roberts in his vehicle after identifying himself, but he sped away. Officers later discovered his vehicle abandoned near a wooded area. State Patrol assisted in locating the subject and he was taken into ICE custody.”

“This suspect was arrested in possession of a loaded weapon in a vehicle provided by Des Moines Public Schools after fleeing federal law enforcement,” ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations St. Paul Field Office Director Sam Olson is quoted as saying. ICE also alleged Roberts had $3,000 in cash and a fixed-blade hunting knife when he was arrested.

After an unrelated incident in 2022, Roberts said he was a licensed hunter and gun owner, The Associated Press reported.

“The investigation into how Roberts acquired the handgun is being turned over to the ATF,” ICE’s release said. “It is a violation of federal law for those in the U.S. without legal status to possess a firearm and ammunition.”

It wasn’t immediately clear whether Roberts has legal representation.

As of Friday afternoon, ICE’s online detainee locator listed Roberts as being held at Pottawattamie County Jail in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The listing shows Roberts’ country of birth as Guyana.

Officials with Des Moines Public Schools say the district’s supervisor has been detained by U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement.

In a message sent out to the district community, school board chair Jackie Norris confirmed that Superintendent Ian Roberts had been detained Friday morning.

“We have no confirmed information as to why Dr. Roberts is being detained or the next potential steps,” Norris said.

According to ICE’s website, Roberts is currently detained at the Pottawattamie County Jail, which is in Council Bluffs, Iowa, roughly 130 miles west of Des Moines and in the vicinity of the Omaha Immigration Court. His country of birth is listed as Guyana. His online biography says he spent much of his childhood in Brooklyn, New York.

An employee at the ICE office in St. Paul, Minnesota, which oversees operations in Iowa, said he had no information on Roberts’ arrest.

The Des Moines Register reports that Roberts, who was named superintendent in the summer of 2023, also competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games in track and field for Guyana as a mid-distance runner. The district serves about 30,000 students.

Norris said that the district would elevate Associate Superintendent Matt Smith into the role of interim superintendent until further notice.

This is a developing story, and will be updated as more information is available.

  • ICE head says deadly Dallas facility shooting

    [ad_1]

The head of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said the shooting at a Dallas processing facility that left one detainee dead on Wednesday “could have been worse,” telling CBS News the sniper’s shots were “indiscriminate” and other people could have been hit during the attack.

Todd Lyons, ICE’s acting director, said the shooter, who officials say died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, “fired indiscriminately” into the ICE field office in Dallas and vehicles stationed there. He said a group of detainees was inside one vehicle at the time of the shooting, after being recently arrested by ICE.

Lyons said three detainees in ICE custody were shot, one fatally. He noted two detainees remained in critical condition as of Wednesday afternoon. ICE has said no agency employees were harmed during the attack.

But Lyons said the shooting could have been deadlier, citing the shooter’s “high-powered rifle” and the area he targeted. Officials say the shooter fired from a nearby rooftop.

“What’s even scarier is the location where the field office is. There’s businesses around there, busy I-35,” Lyons told CBS News during an interview in New York, noting the shooting occurred when people were going to work and school in the early morning.

“He could have, in his indiscriminate fire, hit people traveling to work, civilians on the ground,” he said, calling it “a very scary situation.”

“But unfortunately, someone did lose their life, and it was a definite attack on an ICE facility,” he added.

Lyons said he believes the shooter deliberately targeted federal law enforcement officials, citing bullet casings that officials said were found with anti-ICE messaging on them.

“When you have anti-ICE rhetoric written on the bullets, you know who they’re targeting,” he said.

Lyons identified the deceased shooter as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn, saying preliminary information indicates he acted alone.

Asked if ICE plans to implement new security measures in light of Wednesday’s shooting, Lyons said the agency had already been operating under a “higher threat posture” but would “reevaluate how we’re doing operations.”

He said operations by ICE, which President Trump has charged with overseeing the largest deportation operation in American history, would not be slowed by the shooting.

“We won’t be stopped by it,” Lyons said. “We’re gonna ensure that we’re out there taking these public safety threats off the street, but we will have to go ahead and ensure that the men and women of ICE have all the equipment they need, all the protection they need and all the support they need.”

Vice President JD Vance posted on X:

“The obsessive attack on law enforcement, particularly ICE, must stop. I’m praying for everyone hurt in this attack and for their families.”

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem wrote:

“There was a shooting this morning at the Dallas @ICEgov Detention Facility. Details are still emerging but we can confirm there were multiple injuries and fatalities. The shooter is deceased by a self-inflicted gun shot wound. While we don’t know motive yet, we know that our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them. It must stop.”

Sen. John Cornyn called the shooting “horrific,” writing:

“While law enforcement investigates, I am keeping everyone impacted in my prayers. My staff have been in touch with federal & local officials in Dallas, and we will make sure all resources are brought to bear in the investigation. Thank you to all first responders who rushed to the scene.”

Sen. Ted Cruz also weighed in, saying:

“My team and I are closely monitoring the situation at the ICE Detention Facility in Dallas. We are praying for the swift recovery of those injured, and we are deeply grateful to the brave first responders who rushed to the scene.”

Rep. Marc Veasey said his office is monitoring developments:

“My office is aware of the developing situation and will continue to monitor the situation. We are keeping the victims in prayer and will update the North Texas community as we get news on their conditions and learn more about the suspect.”

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins posted:

“Please join me in prayer for the injured and their families from this morning’s active shooter incident at the ICE facility in Dallas. Violence and terror is never the answer to anything.”

The Fort Worth Police Department also released a statement condemning the attack:

“The violence that occurred in Dallas, TX this morning is uncalled for and moments like this are deeply disturbing as it creates more division in our community at a time when the focus needs to be on how we can come together. We continue to ask our community that if you see something, say something.”

    [ad_1]

1 dead, 2 hospitalized in shooting at Dallas ICE facility, police say

John All right, there is some breaking news this morning. We’re hearing reports of *** shooting at an ICE facility in Dallas. We happen to have with us the acting director of ICE, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Todd Lyons. Director, thank you for being here. I wanna say you were coming in. We were talking to you anyway. Obviously this event has sort of subsumed what we’re gonna discuss. What can you tell us about this incident in Dallas? Yeah, literally, as I was coming here we were notified that there were shots fired at our Dallas field office. Right now preliminary information is *** possible sniper. We have 3 individuals that are down at this time. We’re not sure on their condition. They’ve been taken to the hospital. Um, we’re hearing some reports that the shooter may be down from the Texas Department of Public Safety. The scene secure, you know, obviously right now my hearts and prayers are going out to my officers and agents. That’s my biggest concern, um, and as well as everyone in that area, but this just shows the violence that’s being. Uh, increased against ICE officers and, and agents. This is the 2nd time now we’ve had *** shooting at one of our facilities in the Dallas area, um, and really it’s, it’s, it’s. It’s just *** sad time that we have to worry about violence against law enforcement. So you’re hearing the reports you’re hearing at this point are coming from inside your your offices in Dallas at ICE. You’re hearing directly from them. Yeah, we’re hearing directly from the leadership on the ground there. The building is on lockdown, building secure. Initial reports are that our you know our offices are accounted for, but there are 3 individuals that are shot. Are they, are, are the 3 individuals ICE employees? We’re still working on that right now. Um, obviously it’s really chaotic. Uh, Dallas Police Department’s been great. They’re on scene. It’s *** large police presence there right now, um. You know, it could be uh employees, it could be civilians that were visiting facility, it could be detainees at this point we’re still working through that. We do know that 3 have definitely been shot. They’re en route to the hospital right now. Um, we had great support from locals on the ground. They’re helping us look for the active shooter. Like I said, right before I just walked on set, I got word that the shooter is down from self-inflicted gunshot wound. OK, so it may not be an active shooter situation anymore. You said *** possible sniper. Did this individual get inside the facility or all the shots outside? From *** preliminary reports it looks like shots came from outside and the victims are secure facility and the victims were also outside or the victims inside inside our sally port area. where we have our uh secured detainee location inside that location but again it’s everything’s still coming in so fast it’s just been ***, *** morning. I, I look, I, and I appreciate you giving us the details you have. It’s an unusual situation here. We’re getting preliminary reports that we had not yet been able to confirm. We have the acting director of ICE here telling us that you are getting these reports, uh, directly. And you mentioned the threats that you feel are being directed toward your agents. Talk to me about that in. What’s the environment in general? You know, I’ve never seen anything like this in my law enforcement career. I’ve never seen threats on law enforcement, specifically. ICE increased the way it is, you know, we’re up over 1,000% assaults on officers right now and really just *** lot of the. The talk that’s out there, *** lot of the rhetoric is just the violence directed towards law enforcement officers just trying to do their job and we just keep, just keeping seeing an increase step by step, you know, we had, we, like I said, we had that shooting at the Alvarado facility which is right outside Dallas, uh, on July 4th where they ambushed officers in military tactical gear, um, under the guise of fireworks, and now we have this, and it just seems like it keeps getting worse and worse and it has to stop. Um, you are, you’ve launched *** large recruitment effort. There are ads airing in *** lot of different places. To what extent have you found that the atmosphere is affecting your recruitment efforts? You know, you would think that it would affect it, but it hasn’t. We have over 157,000 applicants. It just keeps going up. There’s really, um, excitement for people that want to serve, not just necessarily nice but want to serve in *** federal law enforcement capacity, uh, especially at *** time when. assaults and attack on law enforcement are increasing. We are seeing, uh, *** great uptick in our recruitment. So people definitely want to do the job, but again, it’s just, it’s *** sad moment in time when we have to worry about the safety of law enforcement officers just out there doing their mission.

Three people, including detainees, have been shot at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Dallas and the shooter is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, federal authorities said.

Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons confirmed the shooting during an interview on CNN on Wednesday.

Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin later told Fox News that no ICE agents were injured.

“We believe he was shooting at law enforcement and detainees from an apartment building,” McLaughlin said. ”Detainees were among the victims of the shooting.”

Officers responded to a call to assist an officer on North Stemmons Freeway around 6:40 a.m. Wednesday and the preliminary investigation determined that a person opened fire at a government building from an adjacent building, Dallas police spokesperson Officer Jonathen E. Maner said in an email.

The Dallas Fire-Rescue Department was also dispatched after a call reporting a shooting at or near the immigration office, department spokesperson Jason L. Evans said in an email.

3 people shot at Dallas ICE facility and the shooter is dead, official says

  • New York officials among dozens arrested at anti-ICE demonstration

    [ad_1]

New York City and state officials were among dozens of people arrested at a demonstration opposing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Downtown Manhattan on Thursday.

It happened outside 26 Federal Plaza, an ICE holding facility that has been a source of controversy over the past several months.

According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, 71 people, including two state senators and nine state Assembly members, were arrested. DHS also said the building was later placed on lockdown due to a bomb threat.

Chopper 2 was over the scene around 4:45 p.m. Eastern Time, as protesters could be seen with their hands zip-tied behind their backs, waiting to board police buses.

Lawmakers say they were trying to conduct oversight of holding facility

Public Advocate Jumaane Williams said he was one of those taken into police custody.

In a statement, Williams said he was participating in “a nonviolent civil disobedience to demand oversight of ICE’s inhumane detention practices,” adding, “Together with the dozens of New Yorkers getting arrested today, I call for all levels of government to do what they can to support our immigrant communities and vulnerable, marginalized populations.”

New York City and state officials were among several people arrested at a demonstration opposing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Downtown Manhattan on Sept. 18, 2025.

    Chopper 2

Assemblywoman Jessica González-Rojas said she was also detained, alongside City Comptroller Brad Lander and City Councilmember Tiffany Cabán.

According to González-Rojas, the lawmakers were trying to conduct oversight of the ICE holding facility to make sure conditions were in compliance with a preliminary injunction ruling handed down by a judge Wednesday.

“We put our bodies on the line for the lives and freedom of thousands of New Yorkers who have been illegally kidnapped and detained by ICE,” she said in a statement, in part.

    They have since been released.

“Vulnerable communities are in danger. And, in history when we see this happening, what we know is that people who have a little bit more privilege have to do a little bit more to protect those who don’t,” Williams said, speaking outside NYPD headquarters.

DHS calls protest “a stunt” by politicians

In a statement, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin called the protest “a stunt in an attempt to get their 15 minutes of fame while endangering DHS personnel and detainees.”

She accused Lander and protesters of obstructing law enforcement and causing a scene.

“The men and women of ICE put their lives on the line every day to arrest violent criminal illegal aliens to protect and defend the lives of American citizens. This type of rhetoric is contributing to the 1000% surge in assaults of ICE officers through this repeated vilification and demonization of ICE,” McLaughlin said in a statement, in part.

  • Hyundai to continue with $2.7 billion expansion of Georgia plant raided by ICE

    [ad_1]

Hyundai Motor Group on Thursday confirmed it is going forward with previously announced plans to expand its Georgia plant, just weeks after an immigration raid delayed the startup of an electric vehicle battery plant at the site.

As part of a broader investment strategy, Hyundai said it would spend $2.7 billion to increase production capacity at the Ellabell site by 200,000 over the next three years, to a total of 500,000 vehicles a year.

The company first announced the expansion in March at the grand opening of the plant west of Savannah, and had said in August that it would invest an additional $5 billion in the United States overall. But the raid, which included arrests of more than 300 South Korean citizens, led to questions about the wisdom of the Asian nation investing in the U.S.

The company said it now plans to produce 10 models of electric and hybrid gas-electric vehicles in Georgia, up from the current two the plant has been assembling as it ramps up production. Hyundai says it’s still on track to expand production worldwide to 5.6 million vehicles a year by 2030. The automaker pledged that 60% of those vehicles will be electric or hybrid powered, targeting sales in South Korea, North America and Europe.

Hyundai said that it plans to make more than 80% of vehicles sold in the United States domestically by 2030, with total domestic content increasing from 60% to 80%. For the first time, the vehicles would include a mid-sized pickup truck, a key vehicle class in the U.S. market. The company already makes the Santa Cruz model, a four-door compact pickup, that it started selling in 2021.

Hyundai CEO José Muñoz has said the immigration raid will delay opening the battery plant by at least two to three months. Spokesperson Michael Stewart said Thursday that the facility will open in the first half of 2026.

Both Hyundai executives and Georgia officials have been trying to calm the situation since the raid, which mushroomed into a diplomatic dispute between South Korea and the United States.

Republican Gov. Brian Kemp told reporters Tuesday at a ceremony marking the groundbreaking of a Rivian Automotive electric vehicle plant that he remains confident Georgia’s business advantages would “win out” in terms of foreign investment. The raid may even wind up smoothing the way for South Korean employees to more easily obtain legal permission to help build and operate facilities in the United States, he said.

“I’ve had good conversations with companies that are here doing business in Georgia, companies that are looking to do business here,” Kemp said. “And I’ve had good conversations with people in the White House about the visa issue.”

Brent Stubbs, the chief administrative officer of the Ellabell site, wrote in an opinion piece published Wednesday in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the company is still committed to Georgia.

“This situation doesn’t change our plans to continue expanding and localizing in the United States,” Stubbs wrote. “Our investments in America are part of a long-term strategic plan.”

The $2.7 billion investment confirmed Thursday will go to expanding capacity at the plant and group affiliates, Stewart said. Hyundai and its onsite affiliates currently have 3,129 employees in Ellabell, he said.

Hyundai and its joint-venture partner in the battery plant, LG Energy Solution, had previously announced $12.6 billion of investments at the Georgia site, with pledges to hire at least 8,500 workers by the end of 2031. State and local governments have promised $2.1 billion in tax breaks and other incentives.

The boost at the Ellabell site is the biggest part Hyundai’s plan to raise production by 1.2 million vehicles a year worldwide. That includes another 250,000 vehicles out of Pune, India; and 200,000 more at Hyundai’s electric vehicle plant in Ulsan, South Korea. The automaker said it would also deliver parts for assembly into an additional 250,000 vehicles at plants in Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and North Africa.

Hyundai underlined a previous announcement to deepen its investment in robotics and said that by 2027 it would launch extended-range electric vehicles with gasoline motors to extend the range of its electric batteries to more than 600 miles (960 kilometers).
