U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Diego intercepted 11 suspected migrants about 13 miles northwest of Mission Bay, officials announced Friday.

Around 8 a.m. Thursday, the cutter Forrest Rednour’s boarding team stopped an 18-foot panga sailing toward U.S. waters, according to USCG officials.

The 11 migrants, who claimed Mexican nationality, were transported to another department within the agency at Ballast Point, the USCG stated.

Officials stated that waters off Southern California were frequently patrolled to deter and respond to smuggling attempts along the U.S.-Mexico maritime border.

  • Coast guard, rescue teams respond to small plane down in Lake Michigan near Milwaukee

    [ad_1]

A small airplane with three people on board is in Lake Michigan following a mid-flight problem after departing from Milwaukee and heading to Michigan, an airport spokesperson said.

The U.S. Coast Guard and other rescue and dive teams are responding to the incident which occurred about 20 miles east of Bender Park at about 12:37 p.m., a spokesperson for Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport said in an email.

The plane left the airport at about 12:17 p.m. and was headed to Michigan, before the problem occurred and the plane “ended up” in the water, the spokesperson said.

No details on the nature of the emergency are known at this time, the spokesperson said.

The plane was a Cirrus SR22 aircraft, which is a small single-engine propeller plane, the spokesperson said.

The U.S. Coast Guard did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the rescue operation.

This is a breaking story and it will be updated with new information.

8-year-old boy bitten by shark while snorkeling in Florida, officials say

FOOTBALL PLAYER IS RECOVERING THIS MORNING. A FORMER SEMINOLE HIGH SCHOOL STAR AND FSU PLAYER WAS SHOT TODAY. WE’RE HEARING FROM HIS FAMILY. PLUS, IT IS DECISION DAY IN ORANGE COUNTY FOR TWO SPECIAL ELECTIONS, THE KEY RACES AND OPEN SEATS AS POLLING LOCATIONS ARE NOW OPEN. PLUS, WE WANT TO GRAB YOUR UMBRELLA. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT SOME COASTAL SHOWERS THIS MORNING AND THERE’S MORE RAIN ON THE WAY. HOW LONG WE’RE GOING TO BE DEALING WITH A SOGGY STRETCH. AND YOUR POWERBALL DREAMS ARE STILL ALIVE. NO WINNER IN LAST NIGHT’S BILLION-DOLLAR DRAWING. WE SHOW YOU THE NUMBERS. AND WHO WOKE UP A MILLIONAIRE RIGHT HERE IN FLORIDA. SUNRISE ON CW 18 STARTS RIGHT NOW. GOOD MORNING. ON THIS TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2ND. THANKS FOR STARTING IT WITH YOUR SUNRISE TEAM HERE AT 8:00 AM JASON GUY AND I’M MEREDITH MCDONOUGH. LOTS TO GET TO THIS MORNING. FIRST WARNING METEOROLOGIST KELLIANNE KLASS WILL HAVE A CHECK OF THOSE TEMPERATURES AND SOME SHOWERS IN JUST A MOMENT. LET’S BEGIN THOUGH, WITH TRAFFIC EXPERT MEAGHAN MACKEY. MEGAN, I KNOW YOU’RE FOLLOWING A CRASH EARLIER TODAY, BUT. AND IT’S REALLY, THOUGH STILL LEADING TO A BIG BACKUP. YEAH, ALL THOSE LANES ARE BACK OPEN. HARD TO BELIEVE, THOUGH. LOOKING AT THIS CAMERA. THE CRASH ITSELF WAS RIGHT NEAR MILL. SO JUST BEFORE YOU GET TO I-4. BUT WESTBOUND BACKING UP PAST GOLDENROD. SO STILL THIS MORNING, HEADING OUT THE DOOR ALONG STATE ROAD FOUR WAYNE, IT’S PROBABLY BEST TO AVOID THOSE WESTBOUND LANES, BUT WE’LL CONTINUE TO MONITOR THIS CRASH. OF COURSE, IT IS THE FIRST DAY BACK TO SCHOOL AND WORK FOR MANY PEOPLE AFTER THE LONG WEEKEND. KELLIANNE HOPEFULLY A DRIER FORECAST IN STORE, ESPECIALLY FOR INLAND SPOTS. OUR COASTLINE. WE’RE TRACKING A COUPLE OF SHOWERS, BUT IT’S NOT AN ALL DAY WASHOUT. ALTHOUGH IF YOU DO HAVE SOME BEACH PLANS, JUST KEEP IN MIND NOT THE BEST BEACH DAY BECAUSE WE’RE GOING TO HAVE GUSTY CONDITIONS AND A HIGH RISK OF RIP CURRENTS. PLUS ON AND OFF SHOWERS FOR I-95 LOCATIONS. ALL RIGHT, LET’S GET YOU OUT THE DOOR WITH A LOOK AT OUR TOWER CAMERA NETWORK OUT AT PORT CANAVERAL. MIX OF SUN AND CLOUDS TO START. AND AT TIMES WE HAVE A LITTLE BIT MORE CLOUD COVER THAN SUNSHINE. THAT’S JUST THE FORECAST FOR THE DAY AHEAD. ALREADY THIS MORNING, TRACKING SOME RAINFALL, WORKING AWAY FROM COCOA BEACH OVER TOWARDS MERRITT ISLAND, DOWN TO INDIAN HARBOR BEACH AND SATELLITE BEACH, JUST A FEW SPRINKLES AND A FEW MORE HEAVIER DOWNPOURS ON THE WAY TOWARDS SCOTTSMOOR. COUPLE OF SHOWERS AROUND OAK HILL AS WELL. IT’S ALL THANKS TO THIS FRONT THAT STALLED OUT IN SOUTH FLORIDA. PLUS, THERE’S AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE. IT’S A NON-TROPICAL LOW THAT’S OFF OF OUR COASTLINE AND WITH A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WE GET COUNTERCLOCKWISE WINDS. SO TODAY OUR WIND IS OUT OF THE NORTH NORTHEAST, WHICH IS WHY WE’RE GOING TO HAVE ON AND OFF SHOWERS ACROSS OUR COAST THIS MORNING. AND THIS AFTERNOON FOR INLAND SPOTS. I THINK THAT’S WHEN WE’LL SEE MAYBE A COUPLE OF PASSING SHOWERS AS WELL. COMING UP IN A FEW MINUTES, WE’LL TALK A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT TODAY’S FORECAST PLUS THE TROPICS. BUT FIRST LET’S GET BACK TO MEGAN WITH A CHECK ON THE 408. YEAH. KELLIANNE. YOU CAN SEE HERE THE DELAYS HERE REALLY BAD. STILL THIS MORNING WESTBOUND IT IS BACKED UP PAST THE 417 IN GOLDENROD. STATE ROUTE FOUR WESTBOUND. THIS IS GOING TO IMPACT THOSE DRIVERS FOR THE MOST PART TRAVELING FROM THE WATERFORD LAKES AREA TOWARDS DOWNTOWN ORLANDO ALONG STATE ROAD FOUR WESTBOUND. SO I WOULD PERSONALLY AVOID THOSE LANES. AND ALSO YOU’RE STILL PAYING THOSE TOLLS TO SIT IN THIS TRAFFIC, SO YOU’RE BETTER OFF THIS MORNING USING COLONIAL DRIVE AS THAT DETOUR. YOU’RE GOING TO BE SITTING IN SOME STOPLIGHTS. YOU STILL NEED TO ADD AN EXTRA 20 TO 25 MINUTES FOR THAT MORNING DRIVE, BUT IT’S GOING TO BE A LOT BETTER THAN SITTING IN THIS TRAFFIC, BECAUSE WE REALLY DON’T SEE THESE DELAYS START TO IMPROVE UNTIL RIGHT WHEN YOU GET TO THAT I-4 INTERCHANGE, YOU CAN SEE THAT PURPLE AND RED HERE, SHOWING JUST HOW LONG THE BACKUP IS. SO SEVERAL MILES OVER TEN MILES THIS MORNING IMPACTING YOU WESTBOUND ALONG THE 408. NO OTHER BIG CRASHES RIGHT NOW, THOUGH. ONCE YOU GET TO I-4 THIS NICE AND QUIET FOR THAT TUESDAY MORNING DRIVE. HEADING OUT THE DOOR AFTER THIS LABOR DAY WEEKEND, WE’LL CHECK BACK IN WITH THOSE TRAVEL TIMES ALONG THE FOUR WAY COMING UP IN JUST A FEW MINUTES, IN ORANGE COUNTY, A COW WAS TO BLAME FOR A CRASH ALONG COLONIAL DRIVE NEAR BITHLO. THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS THAT THIS HAPPENED NEAR EAST RIVER HIGH SCHOOL AROUND 330 THIS MORNING. TRAFFIC WAS DELAYED FOR QUITE A BIT HERE, BUT THINGS ARE FLOWING ONCE AGAIN AT THIS HOUR. NO ONE WAS HURT. IN ORANGE COUNTY, VOTERS HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO THE POLLS FOR ABOUT AN HOUR NOW. THERE. IT’S PART OF A SPECIAL ELECTION. NOW THERE ARE TWO BIG ONES. YES, STATE SENATE DISTRICT 15 AND STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 40 ARE BOTH ON THE BALLOT. WESH 2’S PAOLA TRISTAN ARUDA IS IN WINTER PARK AT ONE OF THE POLLING LOCATIONS. MORE THAN 15,000 PEOPLE HAVE CAST THEIR BALLOTS EARLY, SO NOW WE’RE JUST WAITING TO FIGURE OUT EXACTLY HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL SHOW UP TO POLLING LOCATIONS LIKE THIS ONE. THE ACTUAL POLLING LOCATION IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER, AND WE HAVE SEEN A COUPLE OF CARS SO FAR. OF THOSE VOTES, OVER 10,000 WERE CAST BY MAIL AND ABOUT 5000 BY EARLY VOTING, MARKING THE CURRENT VOTER TURNOUT AT ABOUT 5.62%. STATE SENATE DISTRICT 15 IS THE SEAT LEFT VACANT WHEN GERALDINE THOMPSON DIED. IT COVERS AREAS OF WEST ORANGE COUNTY LIKE WINTER GARDEN, APOPKA, AND ZELLWOOD. STATE REPRESENTATIVE LAVONNE BRACY DAVIS WON THE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY FOR THE SEAT, SO SHE’S FACING OFF AGAINST REPUBLICAN WILLIE MONTAGUE FOR THIS ELECTION. THE OTHER RACES FOR BRACY DAVIS’S SEAT IN STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 40, WHICH COVERS COLLEGE PARK, PINE HILLS, ROSEMONT AND OCOEE. RASHAWN YOUNG WON THE PRIMARY AGAINST FORMER STATE REP TRAVIS MCCURDY, AND TODAY, YOUNG FACES OFF AGAINST REPUBLICAN JUAN LEE. THE POLLS ARE NOW OPEN UNTIL 7 P.M., AND IF YOU ARE COMING OUT TO VOTE, MAKE SURE THAT YOU BRING A PHOTO AND SIGNATURE ID WITH YOU. COVERING ORANGE COUNTY IN WINTER PARK, PAOLA TRISTAN ARUDA WESH TWO NEWS. NEW. THIS MORNING WE’RE STAYING IN ORANGE COUNTY AND FOLLOWING UP ON A SCENE WHERE WE WERE LIVE AS POLICE WERE INVESTIGATING LAST NIGHT. WE NOW KNOW THIS IS PART OF A SHOOTING. IT’S ON EDGEMOOR STREET, JUST OFF NORTH IVEY LANE AND OLD WINTER GARDEN ROAD. THIS IS IN THE MALIBU GROVES NEIGHBORHOOD THERE. ORLANDO POLICE TELL US A MAN WAS SHOT. HE WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL AND IS EXPECTED TO SURVIVE. POLICE ARE GOING TO CONTINUE WITH THIS INVESTIGATION. ALSO THIS MORNING, A MAN IS IN THE HOSPITAL IN VOLUSIA COUNTY AFTER AN OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING. THIS WAS IN PORT ORANGE. AND POLICE SAY IN THE AREA OF CAREY COURT, RIGHT IN THE WILLOW RUN NEIGHBORHOOD, AUTHORITIES TELL US OFFICERS WERE FIRST CALLED OUT FOR A WELL-BEING CHECK ON SOMEONE WHO MIGHT HARM THEMSELVES. POLICE DIDN’T SAY WHAT LED UP TO THE GUNFIRE, BUT ONE MAN WHO DIDN’T WANT TO BE IDENTIFIED TOLD WESH TWO NEWS HE HEARD MULTIPLE GUNSHOTS. WHEN I CAME AROUND TO THE FRONT OF THE HOUSE, THERE WERE POLICE CARS EVERYWHERE, ALL UP AND DOWN THE STREET, SO I WALKED OUT FRONT TO SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON AND I SAW POLICE POLICEMEN ALONGSIDE MY HOUSE, WAVING EMPHATICALLY FOR ME TO GET BACK IN THE HOUSE. POLICE HAVEN’T SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THE EXTENT OF THE MAN’S INJURIES, ONLY THAT HE WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL. THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF LAW ENFORCEMENT IS NOW INVESTIGATING. RIGHT NOW, FLORIDA STATE FOOTBALL PLAYER FROM CENTRAL FLORIDA IS RECOVERING AFTER BEING FOUND SHOT NEAR TALLAHASSEE. AND SOME OF YOU MAY RECOGNIZE HIM. ETHAN PRITCHARD WAS FROM SANFORD. NOW, GADSDEN COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES SAY THAT PRITCHARD WAS FOUND IN A CAR SUNDAY IN HAVANA. THAT’S ABOUT 16 MILES NORTHWEST OF TALLAHASSEE. THE FLORIDA STATE LINEBACKER WAS SHOT JUST ONE NIGHT AFTER THE SEMINOLES PULLED OFF A BIG UPSET AGAINST THE NUMBER EIGHT RANKED ALABAMA. PRITCHARD DID NOT PLAY, BUT THAT’S NOT UNUSUAL FOR FRESHMAN HEAD COACH MIKE NORVELL IS ASKING EVERYONE TO KEEP PRITCHARD IN THEIR THOUGHTS AS HE FIGHTS TO RECOVER. I GOT A CHANCE TO BE THERE LAST NIGHT WITH HIM AND HIS DAD AND FAMILY AND YOU KNOW, GRATEFUL, YOU KNOW, FOR ALL THE SUPPORT AND, YOU KNOW, MEDICAL, YOU KNOW, SUPPORT THAT HE WAS ABLE TO RECEIVE. PRITCHARD PLAYED FOOTBALL FOR SEMINOLE HIGH AND WAS A FOUR STAR RECRUIT. HE WAS IN DEMAND FROM A NUMBER OF SCHOOLS, INCLUDING UCF, BUT HE CHOSE FSU. NO ONE ANSWERED AT THE PRITCHARD HOME. WHEN WE WENT TO TALK TO THEM IN A TEXT MESSAGE FROM HIS FATHER, EARL. THE FAMILY TOLD WESH TWO NEWS THAT WE ARE REQUESTING PRIVACY AT THIS TIME. IF YOU CAN, PLEASE PRAY FOR ETHAN AND OUR FAMILY. NOW, ONCE WE ARE COMFORTABLE WITH THE SITUATION, WE WILL REACH OUT. ETHAN IS A FIGHTER, BUT HE NEEDS SOME EXTRA HELPFUL PRAYERS RIGHT NOW. DEPUTIES SO FAR HAVE NO MOTIVE IN THE SHOOTING. TODAY, POLICE NEED YOUR HELP FINDING WHOEVER SHOT AND KILLED A TWO YEAR OLD GIRL AND SENT HER GRANDPARENTS TO THE HOSPITAL WITH CRITICAL INJURIES. MELBOURNE POLICE OFFICERS WERE STILL OUT AT THE HOME ON POPLAR LANE YESTERDAY AS A MEMORIAL FOR THIS LITTLE GIRL GROWS RIGHT THERE ON THE SIDEWALK. THE DEADLY SHOOTING WAS FRIDAY NIGHT. IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT, CALL THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE OR CRIMELINE. A MAN IS IN JAIL ACCUSED OF BREAKING INTO HIS EX-GIRLFRIEND’S HOME IN DELTONA AND THEN PULLING A GUN ON HER. DEPUTIES SAY THE WOMAN WAS HOME WITH HER FRIEND AND SISTER WHEN DAREN SINGLETARY BROKE IN THROUGH A WINDOW. DEPUTIES SAY HE THEN ATTACKED THE WOMAN BEFORE PULLING A GUN AND FIRING A ROUND INTO THE CEILING. EVENTUALLY, DEPUTIES SAY THAT HE TOOK HIS EX’S PHONE AND JUMPED OUT THE BACK WINDOW. DEPUTIES THEN TRACKED HIM DOWN TO NEAR LAKE HELEN. CRAWL OUT NOW. GOOD BOYS. WHAT A DOG! CRAWL TO YOUR RIGHT. YOU’RE RIGHT. I GOT. THEY EVENTUALLY FOUND SINGLETARY HIDING UNDER AN ABANDONED RV. THE GUN BURIED IN THE DIRT. HE’S NOW FACING HOME. INVASION, ROBBERY AND ASSAULT CHARGES. AS OF THIS MORNING, ALL PROTESTERS ARRESTED BY FLORIDA HIGHWAY PATROL FOR CHALKING ON THE CROSSWALK NEXT TO PULSE ARE OUT OF JAIL. THE BREWING LEGAL BATTLES. JUST THE LATEST DEVELOPMENT IN THE BACK AND FORTH SINCE FDOT ERASED THE RAINBOW CROSSWALK. UNDER NEW STATE REGULATIONS. WESH TWO DAVID JONES HAS MORE ON THE ARREST. THIS ISSUE IS BECOMING BIGGER. ATTORNEY BLAKE SIMONS SAYS IT’S ABOUT MORE THAN JUST A CROSSWALK. HIS CLIENTS, SOME OF WHICH WERE RECENT ARRESTEES, TOOK THE MESSAGE TO ORLANDO CITY HALL. THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE IN FRONT OF OUR POLITICIANS. IT NEEDS TO BE IN FRONT OF OUR GOVERNMENT. IN CITY HALL IS AN EXCELLENT PLACE TO CONTINUE EXERCISING OUR FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH. DONOVAN SHORT, WHO GOES BY MELODY ZAPORIZHZHIA, WHO GOES BY KATE AND MARY JANE EAST, ALL FACED AN ORANGE COUNTY JUDGE FOR THE FIRST TIME ON LABOR DAY. SHANE SHANE. SHAME. ALL ARRESTED BY THE STATE HIGHWAY PATROL FOR PUTTING CHALK ON THE CROSSWALK LATE LAST WEEK. ANOTHER PERSON, SEBASTIAN SUAREZ, WAS ARRESTED FOR THE SAME OFFENSE. GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS SAYS ARTWORK AND MARKINGS, REGARDLESS OF THEIR MESSAGING, NEED TO GO. BASED ON NEW FDOT REGULATIONS. SO I WOULD REFER YOU TO THE DOT MEMO. THE PULSE MEMORIAL BEING ONE OF THE FIRST PLACES PAINTED OVER WITH THESE NEW ALLEGED FDOT REGULATIONS, WAS THE FIRST BLOW IN THIS FIGHT. THIS FIGHT HAS NOW BECOME BIGGER WITH SEBASTIAN’S ARREST AND NOW THE ARREST OF THE THREE INDIVIDUALS. LAST NIGHT. THE JUDGE FOUND PROBABLE CAUSE FOR THE ARRESTS OF THE THREE BECAUSE THE STATE GAVE A SPECIFIC AMOUNT FOR HOW MUCH IT COST TO REPAINT THE CROSSWALK, WHICH IT CALLED A TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICE. SIMONS ARGUES A CROSSWALK DOES NOT MEET THE DEFINITION FOR A TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICE. I DON’T THINK THE FDOT REGULATIONS ARE INFRINGING ON FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS. I THINK FHP CHOOSING TO TARGET PEOPLE FOR PERFORMING CONDUCTIVE SPEECH IN A CROSSWALK, WHICH IS AN EXTENSION OF THE SIDEWALK, A TRADITIONALLY HELD PUBLIC FORUM FOR FREE SPEECH. I THINK THAT IS THE ISSUE. DAVID JONES, NOW, TO GIVE YOU SOME CONTEXT, THE STATE FIRST PAINTED THE RAINBOW CROSSWALK BACK IN 2017, IN REMEMBRANCE OF THE 49 VICTIMS OF THE PULSE NIGHTCLUB SHOOTING. AND FDOT PAINTED IT OVER A WEEK AND A HALF AGO, IN THE EARLY MORNING OF AUGUST 21ST. WITHIN 24 HOURS, PROTESTERS AND SOME CITY OFFICIALS USED CHALK TO COLOR IN THE CROSSWALK AGAIN. BUT BY SUNDAY, FDOT CREWS REPAINTED THE CROSSWALK BACK TO BLACK AND WHITE. ORLANDO POLICE OFFICERS IN FLORIDA HIGHWAY PATROL TROOPERS STARTED GUARDING THE CROSSWALK LAST MONTH, THE SAME DAY SOMEONE FOUND A SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE THERE AT PULSE. IT TURNED INTO AN INVESTIGATION AND IT WAS DEEMED SAFE. NOW, THAT PACKAGE WAS ACTUALLY CHALKED. SOMEONE SENT TO HELP THOSE PROTESTERS. THE BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN PROTESTERS AND FDOT THEN CONTINUED UNTIL LAST FRIDAY, WHEN THE FIRST PERSON THERE WAS ARRESTED, SEBASTIAN SUAREZ. MORE ARRESTS HAPPENED SUNDAY, SETTING OFF MULTIPLE LEGAL BATTLES BETWEEN PROTESTERS AND THE STATE. MEANWHILE, TODAY, THIS RAINBOW CROSSWALK IN DELRAY BEACH WILL BE UP FOR DISCUSSION HERE IN CENTRAL FLORIDA. FDOT SAYS THE ARTWORK MUST BE REMOVED BY TOMORROW, BUT THE CITY REQUESTED A HEARING. IT’S BEING HELD AT FDOT. S TURKEY LAKE PLAZA OFFICES RIGHT THERE ALONG THE TURNPIKE IN ORLANDO. LOOKING AHEAD TO TOMORROW. ANOTHER BATCH OF STARLINK SATELLITES WILL LAUNCH FROM OUR SPACE COAST. SPACEX IS EXPECTED TO LAUNCH AT 706 TOMORROW MORNING FROM CAPE CANAVERAL SPACE FORCE STATION. AND YOU CAN WATCH IT RIGHT HERE ON CW 18 WHEN IT LIFTS OFF. PICKLEBALL IS A VERY POPULAR SPORT. YEAH, BUT IN ONE CENTRAL FLORIDA NEIGHBORHOOD, IT’S CREATING A LOT OF NOISE. THE NEW LIMITS IN WHY SOME PLAYERS IN WINTER PARK SAY THE WHOLE THI

Georgia authorities said Sunday they are investigating the “catastrophic failure” of dock gangway that collapsed and killed seven on Sapelo Island, where crowds had gathered for a fall celebration by the island’s tiny Gullah-Geechee community of Black slave descendants.“It is a structural failure. There should be very, very little maintenance to an aluminum gangway like that, but we’ll see what the investigation unfolds,” Georgia Department of Natural Resources Commissioner Walter Rabon said at a news conference. The gangway was installed in 2021, authorities said.Rabon said three people remained hospitalized in critical condition from Saturday’s collapse.Rabon said “upwards of 40 people” were on the gangway when the “catastrophic failure” occurred, and at least 20 people fell into the water. ‘We were so exhausted:’ Couple survives 36 hours at sea after current carries them while scuba diving near Matagorda

    [ad_1]

MATAGORDA, Texas – A couple from Oklahoma survived two nights and nearly two days bobbing in the Gulf of Mexico last week.

Kim and Nathan Maker were part of a group scuba diving old offshore oil platforms roughly 15 miles off the coast of Matagorda.

On Wednesday, while trying to help another diver get back to a rope they could hold on to, Nathan was whisked away by the current.

His wife tried to reach out and grab his hand while he fought the current.

“Kim reached out for me, and we were about a foot apart,” Nathan told KPRC 2′s Gage Goulding. “Our hands were almost there, and somebody inadvertently knocked her off the line.”

The two spent 36 hours at sea before being rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Teen disappears off Huntington Beach after nighttime swim

    [ad_1]

Officials on Monday were searching for a teenager who disappeared while swimming in Huntington Beach on Sunday night.

Two swimmers went into the water, but only one returned, according to Huntington Beach public information officer Jennifer Carey. There were strong rip currents earlier in the day, she said.

The U.S. Coast Guard began searching around 9:45 p.m. for the 15-year-old boy, who was last seen near Lifeguard Tower 11, according to Coast Guard public affairs specialist Richard Uranga. The Huntington Beach Fire Department has also assisted in the search.

A water search was called off about 10:40 p.m., Carey said, but the search continued on land and in the air.

The Coast Guard’s air and patrol units and its response boats have been searching the area. The search is expected to continue until at least Monday afternoon, Uranga said, when the Coast Guard captain and search-and-rescue coordinator will decide whether efforts will be suspended.

The missing teen hasn’t been publicly identified, but Uranga said he’s an Orange County resident.

A wind turbine is damaged off Nantucket Island. Searchers are combing beaches for debris

    [ad_1]

NANTUCKET, Mass. (AP) — Offshore wind developers have sent teams to search for debris on the beaches of Nantucket Island, a popular summer tourist destination, after one of their turbine blades suffered damage.

Vineyard Wind said Tuesday it is mobilizing teams on Nantucket to recover debris on south-facing beaches. The development said a “blade damage incident” took place Saturday.

Vineyard Wind said it’s also working with the U.S. Coast Guard to maintain a safety zone of 500 meters (1,640 feet) around the affected offshore turbine. It said that the debris consists of nontoxic fiberglass fragments and that any washing ashore will be pieces of one square foot or less.

“Vineyard Wind is fully committed to a swift and safe recovery of all debris, with an unwavering focus on community safety and environmental protection,” it said in a statement.

Vineyard Wind is a joint venture between Avangrid and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and said no personnel or third parties were near the turbine when the damage occurred. It said in a statement that blade manufacturer and installation contractor GE “will now be conducting the analysis into the root cause of the incident.”

The development’s massive wind turbines began sending electricity to the grid this past winter. It said it will deploy trained individuals to collect the debris for the next several days.

Woman's body discovered after small plane crash in Half Moon Bay

    [ad_1]

Authorities on Monday suspended their search for possible survivors after a Cozy Mark IV plane crashed into the water near Half Moon Bay Sunday night, shortly after taking off from Half Moon Bay Airport.

Wreckage from the aircraft was found upside down in the water, and a woman’s body was discovered nearby. Authorities are still trying to determine what happened.

The body was spotted by a commercial fishing boat close to the site of the crash Monday morning and taken to the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office. The woman had not been identified as of Monday evening, but she is believed to be associated with the crash, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

The National Transportation Safety Board said its preliminary investigation indicates there were two people on board the plane.

Shortly after noon on Monday, Sgt. Philip Hallworth, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, said urgent rescue efforts had been called off because the prospect of survivors was unlikely. The plane went down near Moss Beach, about two miles north of the Half Moon Bay Airport. A large piece of the plane washed up on the beach at Ross Cove.

Along with the sheriff’s office, the Coastside Fire Protection District, California Highway Patrol and U.S. Coast Guard are involved in the investigation.

Witness reports described a plane flying erratically before falling from sight, according to the sheriff’s office.

“We were having dinner out on the patio and we heard this motor engine puttering — like you hear in the movies, when a plane is about to crash,” Melissa Richter, who was visiting the area from Maine, told ABC 7 News. “It was definitely pivoting back and forth, and then it looked like it put on the gas, went a little bit faster, then it went down and the engine cut out.”

Cargo ship carrying burning lithium-ion batteries reaches Alaska, but kept offshore for safety

    [ad_1]

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A large cargo ship with a fire in its hold is being kept 2 miles (3.22 kilometers) offshore of an Alaska port as a precaution while efforts are undertaken to extinguish the flames, the U.S. Coast Guard said Saturday.

There were no injuries to the 19 crew members aboard the Genius Star XI, which was carrying a load of lithium-ion batteries across the Pacific Ocean, from Vietnam to San Diego, the guard’s Alaska district said in a release.

The fire started on Christmas Day in cargo hold No. 1, a spokesperson for ship owner Wisdom Marine Group said in a statement. The crew released carbon dioxide into the hold and sealed it over concerns of an explosion.

Ship’s personnel alerted the Coast Guard early Thursday morning about the fire. The Coast Guard said it diverted the 410-foot (125-meter) cargo ship to Dutch Harbor, one of the nation’s busiest fishing ports located in Unalaska, an Aleutian Islands community about 800 miles (1,287 kilometers) southwest of Anchorage.

The ship arrived Friday, but an order preventing the Genius Star XI from going close to shore was issued to “mitigate risks associated with burning lithium-ion batteries or toxic gasses produced by the fire,” Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Mike Salerno said in an email to The Associated Press.

“The city’s primary concern is protecting the health and safety of our community members, the environment, fisheries and commerce,” Unalaska acting city manager Marjie Veeder said in a statement.

Veeder said the city’s emergency operations center “is acting on behalf of the community and advocating our position to protect our community. We are actively monitoring the situation.”

There is danger associated with any vessel fire, prompting the Coast Guard to issue another safety measure besides preventing the ship from getting closer than 2 miles (3.22 kilometers) to shore.

”The safety of Unalaska residents and the surrounding communities is a top priority for us, so as a precaution we are keeping a one-mile (1.61-kilometer) safety zone around the vessel,” Salerno said.

The owners said there has been no oil leaks associated with the incident.

A team of marine firefighting experts late Friday conducted an assessment of the ship and found no signs of structural deformation or blistering outside of the cargo hold, the Coast Guard said.

That team remains on board the ship to evaluate the situation, Salerno said.

An expert hired by the Taipei, Taiwan-based Wisdom Marine Group “is working diligently to create contingency plans, arrange for a firefighting team, and ensure the necessary equipment is in place,’ the group said in a statement.

The Coast Guard will investigate the cause of the fire.

The Genius Star XI left Vietnam on Dec. 10 en route to Dutch Harbor, according to the Marine Traffic website. The ship with a carrying capacity of more than 13,000 tons (11,793 metric tonnes) sails under the flag of Panama.

2 cruise ships rescue more migrants off Florida coast

MIAMI (AP) — Crew members aboard two cruise ships rescued around two dozen migrants in small boats, the latest episode of hundreds making or attempting landings in the Florida Keys over the past several days, authorities said.

Crew members aboard Celebrity Beyond rescued 19 migrants from a crowded boat Monday, and crew members aboard Carnival Celebration spotted five people in distress on a small vessel about 29 miles (46 kilometers) northwest of Cuba.

Once the migrants were rescued from their drifting boat, the Carnival Celebration crew members contacted the U.S. Coast Guard, which took them into custody offshore, said Matt Lupoli, a spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Line.

“The ship resumed on its voyage with its scheduled itinerary unaffected and Carnival Celebration returned to Miami on Tuesday morning after a week-long Caribbean cruise,” Lupoli said in an email.

Capt. Kate McCue, the skipper of Celebrity Beyond, posted video of Monday’s rescue on social media. In the video, she said that she turned the ship around after her chief officer noticed a glimmer on the horizon that turned out to be the migrants.

After the migrants were aboard the ship, crew members provided them with blankets, a change of clothes, food and a medical evaluation, she said. The Coast Guard was contacted.

“Thank you to all the crew who made this rescue possible,” McCue wrote.

Celebrity Cruises released a statement Tuesday thanking crew members.

“We are grateful for our crew’s quick action, and the lives saved as a result,” the company said.

The rescues were made amid a wave of migrant landings in the Florida Keys in the past several days that the local sheriff’s office has called a “crisis.”

Over the weekend, 300 migrants arrived at the sparsely populated Dry Tortugas National Park, about 70 miles (113 kilometers) west of Key West. The park was closed so that law enforcement and medical personnel could evaluate the group before moving them to Key West.

Separately, 160 migrants arrived by boats in other parts of the Florida Keys over New Year’s weekend, and on Monday, around 30 people in two new groups of migrants were found in the Middle Keys.

“This shows a lack of a working plan by the federal government to deal with a mass migration issue that was foreseeable,” Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay said Monday in a news release.

U.S. Border Patrol and Coast Guard crews patrolling South Florida and the Keys have been experiencing the largest escalation of migrations by boat in nearly a decade, with hundreds of interceptions in recent months. Most of the migrants are from Cuba and Haiti and are escaping economic turmoil, food shortages and soaring inflation.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard says a passenger who went overboard from a cruise ship in the Gulf of Mexico was rescued on Thanksgiving after likely being in the water for hours.

The 28-year-old man was reported missing at noon Thursday while the vessel, the Carnival Valor, was heading to Cozumel, Mexico. According to Carnival Cruise Line, the man was with his sister at a bar on Carnival Valor Wednesday at 11 p.m. and went to use the restroom. His sister reported him missing the next day after the man did not return to his stateroom.

The Coast Guard launched search and rescue crews Thursday afternoon and alerted nearby ships to be watchful.

Coast Guard Lt. Seth Gross said a cargo ship later saw a person in the water about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of Southwest Pass, Louisiana, and the mouth of the Mississippi River. Gross said the man confirmed he was the missing cruise ship passenger after he was hoisted into a helicopter about 8:25 p.m. Thursday.

“He appeared to be suffering from mild hypothermia, shock, dehydration, but his condition overall appeared stable,” Gross told WWL-TV, adding the man was taken for medical care.

Gross called the rescue “a miracle especially on a holiday like Thanksgiving.”

In a statement, Carnival said: “We greatly appreciate the efforts of all, most especially the U.S. Coast Guard and the mariner who spotted the guest in the water.”

The man’s name has not been released.

4 drowned, 5 missing from capsized boat off Florida Keys

    [ad_1]

MARATHON, Fla. — At least four people are believed to have drowned and rescuers were searching for another five people off the Florida Keys after a homemade vessel capsized during a failed migration attempt, authorities said Sunday.

The U.S. Coast Guard said nine people were rescued and the body of one person was recovered Saturday after the boat capsized about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Little Torch Key, Florida.

Some of those rescued were wearing life jackets which likely saved their lives in the waves that hit as high as 8 feet (2.4 meters) amid 30 mph (48 kph) winds, the Coast Guard said in a tweet.

The Coast Guard did not immediately say from where the people on the boat were migrating.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Thirteen people were rescued from a sinking fishing vessel early Friday more than 60 miles (96 kilometers) off the coast of Virginia, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard responded to a spot 63 miles (101 kilometers) southeast of Chicoteague after receiving a call for help around 2 a.m., relayed by another vessel, according to Petty Officer 1st Class Jonathan Lally, a Coast Guard spokesperson.

The fishing vessel and a container ship were involved in an incident and the fishing vessel was taking on water, Lally said. Officials are looking into the possibility that two vessels collided, he said.

Another vessel rescued 12 people and a 13th person, the captain of the sinking vessel, was hoisted by Coast Guard helicopter, he said.

  • NTSB: Communications outage a factor in lift boat disaster

NTSB: Communications outage a factor in lift boat disaster

    [ad_1]

NEW ORLEANS — An outage involving a Coast Guard marine warning system and “data gaps” in radar systems were factors in last year’s deadly capsize of an oil industry vessel during severe storms off of Louisiana’s coast, the National Transportation Safety Board said in a report issued Tuesday.

Thirteen of the 19 people aboard the Seacor Power died after the offshore vessel capsized in the Gulf after leaving Port Fourchon. Known as a lift boat, the vessel had three legs that could be lowered to the sea floor, converting the ship to an offshore platform for servicing oil and gas facilities. It had been chartered by Talos Energy LLC for work on a Gulf platform when it was hit by high winds in rough seas and capsized on April 13, 2021.

An NTSB preliminary report had said the Seacor Power had begun to lower its stabilizing legs and was trying to turn to face heavy winds when it flipped in the Gulf of Mexico. Six people were rescued.

The NTSB said in Tuesday’s report that the captain of the Seacor Power made a “reasonable” decision to get underway the day of the disaster. But he didn’t have sufficient weather information from the lift boat company.

“Additionally, due to a Coast Guard broadcasting station outage, the SEACOR Power crew did not receive a National Weather Service Special Marine Warning notifying mariners of a severe thunderstorm that was approaching,” the report said.

Another problem: a lack of low-altitude radar data that prevented the National Weather Service from identifying and forecasting heavy winds that hit the vessel. The report suggested that the weather service, the Federal Aviation Administration and Air Force jointly consider lowering radar angles to improve coverage.

Multiple recommendations for the Coast Guard were included in the report. It suggested development of a procedure to let mariners know when navigational broadcasting is out; modification of regulations to require that lift boats be constructed for greater stability; and development of procedures to involve participation of commercial, local government and non-profit air rescue providers in rescue operations. The Coast Guard also should require that everyone employed on vessels in “coastal, Great Lakes, and ocean service” have personal locater beacon devices.

If the crew members and offshore workers aboard the SEACOR Power had been required to carry such devices, “their chances of being rescued would have been enhanced,” the report said.

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Almost 100 people, mostly from Haiti, who were rescued from an overcrowded boat off the Florida coast had no food or water for two days, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

A Coast Guard helicopter spotted the 96 Haitians, as well as a passenger each from Uganda and the Bahamas, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of Boca Raton, Florida, last week. They were transferred to Bahamian authorities on Sunday.

The passengers told Coast Guard crew members that they had been at sea for a week and lacked food and water during the last two days. The 40-foot cabin cruiser was overloaded with 53 men, 35 woman and 10 children, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

    No one was injured.

“Smugglers do not care whether you live or die,” said Capt. Robert Kinsey of the Coast Guard’s District Seven, citing the lack of sustenance and the overloaded vessel. “These people are lucky to be alive.”

2 from sunken boat fend off sharks during Coast Guard rescue

    [ad_1]

NEW ORLEANS — Two people from a sunken fishing boat were fending off sharks in the Gulf of Mexico when a crew rescued them and one other person from waters off the Louisiana coastline, the Coast Guard said.

The Coast Guard launched a search after a relative reported the three people failed to return from a fishing trip Saturday evening.

The 24-foot (7.3-meter), center-console fishing boat sank about 10 a.m. Saturday and stranded the three people without communication devices, the Coast Guard said in a news release.

The three were wearing lifejackets and one was showing signs of hypothermia when they were rescued Sunday about 25 miles (40.2 kilometers) offshore from Empire, Louisiana, a small community southeast of New Orleans. They had been in the water more than 24 hours.

The news release said a Coast Guard boat crew saw two of the people fending off sharks, and both of them had injured hands. The crew pulled them from the water, and the two were lifted onto a helicopter. The helicopter crew lifted the third boater from the water.

The two injured people were taken to University Medical Center New Orleans, where they were listed as stable. The Coast Guard did not release their names and did not specify whether the injuries were from bites, from being scraped against sharks’ sandpaper-like skin or from another cause.

“If the family member had not notified the Coast Guard, and if these three boaters were not wearing life jackets, this could’ve been a completely different outcome,” said Lt. Cmdr. Kevin Keefe, a Coast Guard search and rescue mission coordinator in New Orleans.

The news release said Coast Guard crews in two boats, two planes and a helicopter searched about 1,250 square miles (3,237.5 square kilometers) of water, slightly larger than the size of Rhode Island.

  • 2 Russians seek asylum after reaching remote Alaska island

2 Russians seek asylum after reaching remote Alaska island

    [ad_1]

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Two Russians who said they fled the country to avoid military service have requested asylum in the U.S. after landing in a small boat on a remote Alaska island in the Bering Sea, U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s office said Thursday.

Karina Borger, a spokesperson for the Alaska Republican senator, said in an email that the office has been in communication with the U.S. Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection and that “the Russian nationals reported that they fled one of the coastal communities on the east coast of Russia to avoid compulsory military service.”

Thousands of Russian men have fled since President Vladimir Putin announced a mobilization to bolster Russian forces in Ukraine. While Putin said the move was aimed at calling up about 300,000 men with past military service, many Russians fear it will be broader.

Spokespersons with the U.S. Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection referred a reporter’s questions to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security public affairs office, which provided little information Thursday. The office, in a statement, said the people “were transported to Anchorage for inspection, which includes a screening and vetting process, and then subsequently processed in accordance with applicable U.S. immigration laws under the Immigration and Nationality Act.”

The agency said the two Russians arrived Tuesday on a small boat. It did not provide details on where they came from, their journey or the asylum request. It was not immediately clear what kind of boat they were on.

Alaska’s senators, Republicans Murkowski and Dan Sullivan, on Thursday said the two Russians landed at a beach near the town of Gambell, an isolated Alaska Native community of about 600 people on St. Lawrence Island. Sullivan said he was alerted to the matter by a “senior community leader from the Bering Strait region” on Tuesday morning.

Gambell is about 200 miles (320 kilometers) from the western Alaska hub community of Nome and about 36 miles (58 kilometers) from the Chukotka Peninsula, Siberia, according to a community profile on a state website. The remote, 100-mile (161-kilometer) long island, which includes Savoonga, a community of about 800 people, receives flight services from a regional air carrier. Residents rely heavily on a subsistence way of life, harvesting from the sea fish, whales and other marine life.

A person who responded to an email address listed for Gambell directed questions to federal authorities. A message seeking comment also was sent to the Consulate General of Russia in San Francisco.

Sullivan, in a statement, said he has encouraged federal authorities to have a plan in place in case “more Russians flee to Bering Strait communities in Alaska.”

“This incident makes two things clear: First, the Russian people don’t want to fight Putin’s war of aggression against Ukraine,” Sullivan said. “Second, given Alaska’s proximity to Russia, our state has a vital role to play in securing America’s national security.”

Murkowski said the situation underscored “the need for a stronger security posture in America’s Arctic.”

Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy on Wednesday, as initial details of the situation were emerging, said he did not expect a continual stream or “flotilla” of people traversing the same route. He also warned that travel in the region could be dangerous as a fall storm packing strong winds was expected.

It is unusual for someone to take this route to try to get into the U.S.

U.S. authorities in August stopped Russians without legal status 42 times who tried to enter the U.S. from Canada. That was up from 15 times in July and nine times in August 2021.

Russians more commonly try to enter the U.S. through Mexico, which does not require visas. Russians typically fly from Moscow to Cancun or Mexico City, entering Mexico as tourists before getting a connecting a flight to the U.S. border. Earlier this year, U.S. authorities contended with a spate of Russians who hoped to claim asylum if they reached an inspection booth at an official crossing.

Some trace the spike to before Russia invaded Ukraine, attributing it to the imprisonment of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny last year.
