Amidst a government shutdown, federal employee Mike Daugherty’s family is simultaneously confronting severe medical emergencies, including a cancer diagnosis and a seizure, while relying on community aid to manage mounting bills and a broken-down vehicle
Happy sounds still come from Mike and Shayna Daugherty’s home in the middle of shutdown hardships.
Mike has worked as an accountant for the Department of Defense for the last 15 years. He was protected in the last shutdown, but not this time.
Mike Daugherty and Shayna Daugherty
Furlough hardship
What they’re saying:
“My last paycheck was on October 10th, and it excluded the first few days of October because that was when the furlough started,” said Mike. “It’s been really difficult. I’ve had to take out some money for retirement to try to pay for it. We’ve also had a lot of extra costs happening here as the shutdown was happening and that’s really made it even more difficult.”
The day the shutdown started, the family was leaving the hospital with Garrett after an emergency tonsillectomy.
While they were headed home, a phone call from special-needs son Zach’s school, told them he had a seizure and was unconscious, and an ambulance took him to a different hospital.
“They increased his epilepsy medication, and they sent him home the same night,” said Shayna.
“The next day I had to go get a biopsy because they had found a lump, and that Wednesday after that I got the pathology reports, and I have metastatic breast cancer.”
Community support fuels family during shutdown
Local perspective:
Life for countless other government families, like the Daugherty’s, doesn’t shut down because of the government shutdown.
“It’s been tough. There’s just been so much going on, I mean it’s hard to just deal with the current situation,” said Mike.
Friends helped wherever they could, and so too did the family’s church.
“They gave us like a hundred dollars in gift cards for food and one of our friends set up a GoFundMe for us,” said Shayna.
Others have brought in meals for the family of five.
“So we’re blessed to have some community support during this really terrible time,” said Shayna.
“During this time, you really want to put your faith in God, but also there’s so much fear going on and so much, I would say, like negative energy, in the country right now related to this whole situation,” said Mike. “I do believe there are things that people in our country can do to fix this issue, and you know I really hope that they can and will.”
Unexpected vehicle failure
Dig deeper:
One more thing, since the shutdown started, the transmission in their SUV went out. Never a good time for so many unexpected events, magnified though, when there is no paycheck coming in.
Mike Daugherty says there’s just a lot of concern, but yet he adds, “I do believe god has a plan.”

What we don’t know:
Officials have not released information on how many people were aboard.
Local perspective:
FOX 4 spoke to neighbors and business owners who saw the aftermath.
Theresa Brown was in her home right across the street when she heard a loud boom and ran outside.
She picked up her phone and started recording as people ran towards the fire trying to help.
“I hope it was quick. I mean that just… those poor people, I don’t know what else to say,” said Brown.
“We’ve seen fires up close, but that was them. I think there’s like 14 fire trucks out here, and it took them forever to hook up. And it’s like you just didn’t think there’s going to be enough water. Seriously, that’s how bad it looked.”
Brown started to run away after hearing more booms coming from the crash.
“Why? Because there was, there’s nothing you can do when it’s like that serious. You’re wasting your time running at it,” she said.
“We hear a total of four booms. Then they come running back, because it’s like there’s nothing you could do. You knew nobody survived that.

Hady Aghili owns the Five Points Business Park when he received a call he never expected.
“They were telling me that there was a small plane crash right into our property. And I thought the beginning was a joke. I was watching a Cowboys game, but, you know, he actually first texted me, then he called me, said, Hey, you know, I’m serious, get out there.”
He quickly drove to his business and waited. Eventually, he came to see that the flames had missed his business by a matter of yards.
“I mean, I was wishing for the best. I was hoping, first of all, you don’t want to have any casualties. And second, you know, I mean, loss of property can always be replaced, but not the lives.”

Two brothers from Texas are facing felony charges for allegedly kidnapping a Washington County family at gunpoint and taking an estimated $72,000 in cryptocurrency. FOX 9’s Karen Scullin has the full report.
MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) – Two Texas brothers are now facing federal charges for allegedly holding a Minnesota family hostage at gunpoint for hours and taking more than $8 million in cryptocurrency.
Federal kidnapping charges
What’s new:
Raymond Christian Garcia, 23, and Isiah Angelo Garcia, 24, are facing federal charges for the “kidnapping and cryptocurrency heist” of a Grant, Minnesota, family. The armed incident also led to the Mahtomedi Public Schools to cancel its homecoming football game due to law enforcement activity in the area.
“A violent kidnapping that stole $8 million and silenced a homecoming game is not just a crime. It is a blow to the sense of safety of everyone in Minnesota,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson in a provided statement Thursday. “This is not normal. Minnesotans should not accept wild violence and thievery as normal. Every Minnesotan deserves to live in peace and a life unaffected by rampant crime.”
The federal kidnapping charges are in addition to the state charges of kidnapping, first-degree burglary and first-degree aggravated robbery.
The brothers are scheduled to make their first appearance in federal court on Thursday.
Crypto-kidnapping heist
The backstory:
According to the court records, a 911 call was received at approximately 4:45 p.m. on Sept. 19 from someone in Grant, Minnesota, stating that he and his family had been kidnapped and were being held hostage at gunpoint in their home.
The complaint details that at around 7:45 a.m., a man was taking out the garbage when the armed brothers allegedly forced him back into the garage and bound his hands with zip ties. The men then woke up the man’s son and wife in the house, also binding them.
Over the next nine hours, Raymond Garcia allegedly held the family hostage while armed with an AR-15-style rifle. Police said the upstairs bedroom door was tied shut with wire and needed to be cut in order to free them, according to the complaint.
Meanwhile, Isiah Garcia, armed with a shotgun, allegedly forced the man to log into his cryptocurrency wallet and transfer funds to an unknown account, charges state. After learning of a separate hard drive-style cryptocurrency wallet kept at the family cabin in Jacobson, Minnesota, Isiah Garcia allegedly forced the man into the truck and drove three hours to make the additional transfer.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office valued the cryptocurrency at $8 million, a figure drastically higher than the more than $72,000 cited in the county criminal complaint.
According to the county complaint, the victim believed some of his crypto account information had been leaked during a data breach. The charges note that the men were frequently on the phone with an “unknown third party who directed [them] to transfer the cryptocurrency.”
Brothers arrested in Texas
The investigation:
According to the federal complaint, Raymond Garcia was reportedly spotted on a nearby walking path and fled into the woods when officers approached. The following morning, a nearby car was reported stolen.
After returning to Texas, Raymond Garcia reported that his AR-15 had been stolen, but authorities found a shipping box in his home with the same serial number as the firearm recovered in Minnesota. The search also uncovered several phones, computers and gun cases, but no cryptocurrency was found, the complaint said.
Ultimately, both brothers were arrested in Texas. In a post-Miranda interview, Isiah Garcia allegedly admitted that he and Raymond Garcia drove to Minnesota and held the family at gunpoint.
According to the complaint, Isiah Garcia rented a car near Houston, Texas on Sept. 16 and drove to Minnesota. The vehicle’s GPS placed the car near the victim’s home and a motel in Roseville. On Sept. 21, Isiah Garcia was taken into custody while driving the same rental car.

Raymond Christian Garcia, 23, and Isiah Angelo Garcia, 24, were each charged via warrant with three counts of kidnapping, three counts of first-degree burglary, and one count of first-degree aggravated robbery for their alleged roles.
The incident led to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office issuing a shelter in place order while they searched for the suspects. The incident ultimately led to the cancellation of a high school homecoming football game in Mahtomedi.

Meanwhile, Isiah Garcia, armed with a shotgun, allegedly forced the man to log into his cryptocurrency wallet and transfer over $36,000 to an unknown account, charges state. After learning of a separate crypto wallet kept at the family cabin in Jacobson, Minnesota, Isiah Garcia allegedly forced the man to drive three hours and transfer the additional cryptocurrency, valued at over $36,000.
According to the complaint, the victim believed some of his crypto account information had been leaked during a data breach. The charges note that the men were frequently on the phone with an “unknown third party who directed [them] to transfer the cryptocurrency.”
The victim inside the house called 911, and multiple squad cars passed Isiah Garcia as they were driving back from the cabin. Isiah Garcia then turned the truck around, parked, and fled on foot before discarding the shotgun in a nearby field, charges allege.
Raymond Garcia was seen on camera running out the back door of the home. During a search of the area, authorities recovered an AR-15 rifle in a suitcase located in the tree line behind the home, charges said.
Brothers arrested in Texas
The investigation:
According to the complaint, Isiah Garcia rented a car near Houston, Texas, on Sept. 16 and drove to Minnesota. The vehicle’s GPS data placed the car near the victim’s home and a motel in Roseville. On Sept. 21, Isiah Garcia was taken into custody while driving the same rental car in Texas.
Raymond Garcia went to authorities on Sept. 22 to report that his AR-15 had been stolen in Waller, Texas. During a search of the brother’s home in the Waller area, authorities reportedly found a firearm box with a serial number matching the AR-15 recovered in Minnesota.
At the time the criminal complaints were filed, both men were in custody in Texas.

A 29-year-old man with ties to North Texas and Oklahoma has been identified as the suspect in a Dallas ICE detention center shooting. According to FOX News and FOX 4 sources, the sniper who killed at least one person at the Dallas ICE facility early Wednesday morning was 29-year-old Joshua Jahn.
What we know:
According to FOX News and FOX 4 sources, the sniper who killed at least one person at the Dallas ICE facility early Wednesday morning was 29-year-old Joshua Jahn.
Records show he has family in the Collin County city of Fairview. Dallas police confirmed that Fairview police are assisting with their investigation.
SKY 4 captured images of FBI agents outside that home on Wednesday afternoon and FOX 4 reporters saw what appeared to be frantic family members.
Federal investigators were seen removing a box of possible evidence from the home.
What they’re saying:
Sloane Mordecai, a neighbor, had no idea about the attack until she drove upon reporters down the street — and federal agents next door.
“That’s insane to hear,” said Mordecai.
“Like I said, very sweet family, so that was really, really surprising to hear.”
It took a while for Tim Johnson to learn that he lives down the street from the Fairview home connected to Jahn. He says he only knew of Jahn and no personal details.
“You think just how crazy that is and how close it is to home now,” said Johnson.
“But it’s an unfortunate event.”
Dig deeper:
Records indicate Jahn most recently lived in Durant, Oklahoma.
“That’s what we are looking into,” Chief David Comeaux told FOX 4.
Law enforcement officials were seen parked outside a home connected to Jahn in Durant on Wednesday afternoon. Video shows the FBI and SWAT focusing in on that listed address, but no word as to what was recovered.
A spokesperson for Collin College in McKinney, Texas told the Associated Press that someone named Joshua Jahn took classes at “various times” between 2013 and 2018.
The AP reports that in late 2017, he worked harvesting legal marijuana from a farm in Washington state.
What we don’t know:
There’s still no word on a motive for the shooting.
Criminal Background
FOX 4 could not find any history of violent crime on Jahn’s record.
He does not appear to have a violent criminal history, but in 2015 he was arrested for marijuana possession in Collin County.
Dallas ICE Shooting
The shooting happened around 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Dallas ICE facility located on North Stemmons Freeway.
A gunman shot three ICE detainees. One of those detainees died, and the two others are in critical condition.
Police sources told FOX 4 the sniper was armed with a rifle on a nearby roof. He shot himself as agents approached him, the sources said.
Dallas FBI Field Office Special Agent in Charge Joe Rothrock confirmed the incident is being investigated as active, targeted violence.
He also said rounds found near the shooter contained messages that were anti-ICE in nature.
Federal investigators have not said what may have led Jahn to develop reported anti-ICE views, or if there’s any other evidence beyond what was written on shell casings found at the Dallas facility.
A sign on a car that reportedly belonged to the shooter reads, “Radioactive fallout from nuclear formations that’ve passed over these areas more than 2x since 1951.”

AUSTIN – The Texas House approved new mid-decade redistricting maps on Wednesday after a two-week delay with a vote of 88-52.
After the map’s approval, the full piece of legislation, House Bill 4, was finally passed by the lower chamber. Debate over the legislation finished around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Now that the bill has been approved by the House, a Senate committee will discuss the legislation Thursday morning.
A long-awaited debate got underway at the State Capitol. Republican House members brought up a congressional re-districting plan and faced off with Democrats who returned to Austin last week from their quorum break
The Republican-led House was looking to create five additional GOP House seats ahead of next year’s midterm election.
Redistricting is usually only done after the U.S. census every 10 years.
Republicans say the new districts were drawn to maximize partisan advantage.
Democrats opposed the new maps, saying they’re based on racial discrimination.
The Senate has already passed the new Congressional map.
Dig deeper:
“We are allowed to draw congressional districts on the basis of political performance, as recognized by the U.S. Supreme Court in Rucho versus Common Cause,” said State Representative Todd Hunter, the author of the bill.
‘Racial gerrymandering’ is the phrase that is repeatedly underscored by the left, claiming minority voter voices are being silenced under the redraw.
Democratic State Representative Ramon Romero was among several lawmakers who fired off questions on Wednesday.
State Representative Ramon Romero asked, “Mr. Chairman, did you do any analysis or review whether voting is racially polarized in Texas before, during, or after the drawing of this map?”
However, Rep. Hunter broke down the numbers in detail and said the new maps make four out of the five districts majority-minority Hispanic.
“In 2021, there were nine Hispanic majority districts,” said Representative Hunter. “In this plan, there are 10 Hispanic majority age districts. In the 2021 plan, there were seven Hispanic citizen voting age districts, and under this plan, there are eight.”
‘A new chapter of Republican unity’
AUSTIN, TX – AUGUST 5: Speaker of the House Dustin Burrows gavels in the session in the House Chamber at the Capitol in Austin, Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2025. A quorum was not present after most Democrat state representatives left Texas to break quorum and b
Speaker of the House Dustin Burrows (R-Lubbock) released the following statement Wednesday evening.
What they’re saying:
“The Texas House today delivered legislation to redistrict certain congressional districts to address concerns raised by the Department of Justice and ensure fairness and accuracy in Texans’ representation in Congress.
“I want to thank Representative Todd Hunter for carrying this bill and for his tireless efforts ensuring the new map is not only constitutional, but secures Republican representation in Congress. Led by Chairman Cody Vasut, members of the House Select Committee on Congressional Redistricting traveled across the state to hold hearings and gather input from Texans.
“This work has helped us deliver the legal, remedied maps Texas voters deserve. These past few weeks have not been easy, but the House members who showed up for work every day have shown a dedication to their constituents that will not be forgotten.
“Today’s passage of the congressional map has ushered in a new chapter of Republican unity, and I am proud to have led my colleagues in this important achievement. The other items on the special session call require the House to move past our differences, and I expect us to work together to deliver relief to Texans and implement critical safeguards to keep our children and communities safe from future disasters.”
‘This isn’t your grandfather’s Democratic Party’
The Democratic National Committee released their own statement after the passage as well.
The other side:
“This is a shame — a craven, power-hungry, unconstitutional shame. But we won’t back down, and we won’t let the old rules stop us. Republicans tore up that rule book, destroying voting rights to try to cling to power, so we refuse to play fair anymore.
“Texas Democrats fought every step of the way against these unlawful, rigged congressional maps and sparked a national movement. Democrats, like California’s Gavin Newsom and likely others, will carry that movement forward on behalf of Texas and the entire country.
“Texas Democrats forged the path and showed what it means to fight. In less than a year, the American people have become fed up with Donald Trump and his Republican circus. Costs are going up, the economy is fizzling out, and his only accomplishment is one of the worst and most unpopular pieces of legislation in modern history.
“No wonder he’s trying to rig the game — he knows his team can’t win next year without cheating. Make no mistake: this isn’t your grandfather’s Democratic Party. We don’t give up, we get even.”
Rep. Salman Bhojani reacts
Democratic State Representative Salman Bhojani spoke with FOX 7’s Katie Pratt seconds after the House adjourned on Wednesday.
“What’s happening in Texas affects everybody,” said State Representative Salman Bhojani. “Five congressional seats are huge.”
“I think we’re passing the baton on to other states for them to continue this fight while we take this fight to the Texas House and see where we can take it to the courts,” said Representative Bhojani. “I’m really optimistic and I feel really good.”
Their primary strategy on Wednesday was clearly about laying the groundwork, as they prepared to take their case to court.
“We were just trying to get the Republicans to specify how they came up with it because they have to try really hard to silence minority voices when the growth of 95% of Texas population has been in minority communities,” said Representative Bhojani. “We wanted to get that on the record so that we can go to the courts.”
Texas redistricting effort
AUSTIN, TEXAS – AUGUST 06: A newly proposed U.S. Congressional District map is seen as the Senate Special Committee on Congressional Redistricting meets to hear invited testimony on Congressional plan C2308 at the Texas State Capitol on August 6, 202
Dig deeper:
The new map increases the number of congressional districts that would have voted for Trump by at least 10 percentage points by five.
Republicans currently control 25 of the state’s 38 Congressional districts.
The new map makes some big changes in North Texas. It moves Democrat Rep. Marc Veasey’s district from Tarrant to Dallas County, Democrat Rep. Julie Johnson’s district moves from Dallas and Collin County to more conservative sections of East Texas, and Democrat Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s Dallas seat becomes one of just two majority Black districts in the entire state.
The Democrats claim the redrawn maps will violate the federal Voting Rights Act, but that may be difficult for them to prove.
In Central Texas, Democrats Greg Casar and Lloyd Doggett find their districts vastly different from the most recent map.
The district currently held by Casar would no longer include Travis County, while the district held by Doggett would no longer include a portion of Williamson County.
In Houston, the new map reshapes four currently Democrat-held districts. The biggest change to the districts would be in the seat currently held by Rep. Al Green. The new map would shift the district from covering southern Harris County and instead move it to the eastern part of the county.
Democratic quorum break
The backstory:
Democrats claimed victory in blocking legislation in the first special session, but that will be short-lived. Republicans plan to fast track their priorities, including redistricting and flood response legislation.
For two weeks, Texas Democrats blocked any legislation from reaching Gov. Abbott’s desk.
They left the state in protest of a vote on a new congressional redistricting map that would give republicans five new seats in congress.
Nationwide impact
What they’re saying:
Dallas state Rep. Toni Rose said the quorum break had an impact nationwide.
“Gaining five seats will also impact the entire country, and we wanted to slow it down. The process was very disrespectful,” she said.
Legislative work in Texas is stalled after Democratic lawmakers fled the state to avoid a redistricting vote. The drama has spread across the country with other blue states now considering redrawing their own congressional lines. FOX’s Rebekah Castor has more.
But the Texas map is moving forward with a Senate committee advancing it on Sunday.
“We are done waiting, we have a quorum. Now is the time for action. We will move quickly,” said Rep. Burrows.
Moving quickly, not just on redistricting, but also on another special session priority, flood safety bills from the July 4th disaster in Central Texas.
What’s next:
Democrats know the congressional map will eventually pass. Their next goal is to fight it in the courts, something that was already going to happen once the maps passed.

Austin, TX, is a city rich in culture, events, outdoor recreation, and incredible cuisine. In addition to being a popular place to live, Austin is also home to a fairly competitive real estate market that’s seen significant change in recent years.
For many, buying a home in Austin is a dream come true, but it’s also important to know how it will impact your finances. From down payments to monthly mortgage payments, there’s a lot to understand before buying your first home
So whether you already live in ATX or are looking to relocate to the area, here’s a breakdown of the income you’ll need to purchase your first home in Austin.
How much income do you need to buy a starter home in Austin?
The median sale price of a starter home in Austin is $330,000. In order to afford this, first-time homebuyers in Austin should make $118,201 per year, up 0.7% from 2023. However, the median income in Austin is $104,076, meaningthe typical resident often can’t afford a starter home.
As expected, starter homes in Austin are more affordable than the average home (all price brackets combined; see methodology for details). In order to afford any median-priced home in the area, you’ll need to make $126,208 (as of October 2023).
Nationwide, you need an income of $75,849 to afford a typical starter home, which costs an average of $240,000. The average U.S. household earns an estimated $84,072.
First-time homebuyers’ guide to the Austin housing market
Austin’s housing market has gone through ups and downs in the past four years, with rapid growth followed by sharp declines.
At the beginning of the pandemic, the city was one of the most popular migration destinations for coastal homebuyers searching for sunshine and affordability. In fact, the city was the outright most popular metro for relocating homebuyers at the end of 2020, which continued into 2021. This remarkable popularity boosted house prices by over $200,000 from January 2021 to May 2022.
However, this rapid rise priced some people out of the market and caused house prices to fall. People also stopped looking to move into the city, and by the end of 2023, Austin lost homebuyers for the first time on record.
As of April 2024, house prices are sitting at $550,000, a 17.8% drop from their May 2022 peak. The Austin-San Antonio metropolitan area is still expected to grow to 8.3 million people by 2050.
The capital of Texas is home to many amenities and attractions throughout its neighborhoods, like the Bullock Texas State History Museum, Barton Springs Pool, and Castle Hill. Some popular neighborhoods in Austin include Crestview, Allandale, and South Congress.
What does a typical down payment look like for a starter home in Austin?
Here are some common down payment amounts for a typical $330,000 starter home in Austin:
Down payment percentage
Down payment amount
3% down payment
$9,900
3.5% down payment
$11,550
5% down payment
$16,500
10% down payment
$33,000
15% down payment
$49,500
20% down payment
$66,000
Down payments can range from 0% to 100% of the total house price, depending on your budget, loan type, and long-term priorities. While experts have historically recommended budgeting for a 20% down payment, the increasing cost of homes and continued sluggish wage increases has led to a 15% down payment becoming more common.
Some loan types allow for lower down payment amounts. For example, a Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loan requires just 3.5% down, while the lowest possible down payment for a conventional loan is 3%. These amounts typically depend on your credit scores, so buyers with higher credit scores may qualify for lower down payments.
What is the typical mortgage payment for a starter home in Austin?
The typical monthly mortgage payment for a starter home in Austin is $2,955. This assumes you put 3.5% down and have around a 7% interest rate.
If this payment sounds too high, you could consider renting an apartment in Austin. The average rent price is $2,216, possibly making it a better option while you save for a down payment on a house. You can also use an affordability calculator to see what you can afford based on your income and down payment.
What should you do next?
If you’re in the market for your first home in Austin, it’s important to understand how much house you can afford. Take your annual income, credit score, the current mortgage rates, and local market trends to make a decision that works best for you.
From there, an Austin agent can help you navigate the entire home buying process and provide valuable local expertise. To learn more about how to buy a home, check out Redfin’s First-Time Homebuyer’s Guide.
Methodology
Redfin divides all U.S. properties into five buckets based on Redfin Estimates of homes’ market values. There are three equal-sized tiers, as well as tiers for the bottom 5% and top 5% of the market. Redfin defines “starter homes” as homes whose sale price fell into the 5th-35th percentile of the Redfin Estimate tier.
We calculated the annual income needed to afford a starter home by assuming a buyer spends no more than 30% of their income on housing payments. Housing payments are calculated assuming the buyer made a 3.5% down payment and also take a month’s median sale price and average mortgage-interest rate into account.
The national income data is adjusted for inflation using the Consumer Price Index. 2024 income is estimated based on projections from the U.S. Census Bureau’s (ACS) 2022 median household income using the 12-month moving average nominal wage growth rate. The rate was compiled from the Current Population Survey and reported by the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta.
We assume housing payments include the mortgage principal, interest, property taxes, homeowners insurance, and mortgage insurance (when applicable).

A man is accused of attacking his neighbor after entering the wrong house, Texas officials say.

An 80-year-old man was beaten in the bathroom of his own home after an intoxicated neighbor entered the wrong house, according to police in Texas.
The attack happened at a home in San Antonio at about 1:20 a.m. March 25, according to an incident summary from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. A deputy responded to a call about a burglary in progress but soon learned the home invasion was likely an accident.
The deputy knocked on the front door but noticed it was undamaged, the report said. When the victim answered, he was limping, his shirt was torn and covered in food stains, and food from Taco Palenque — a regional Tex-Mex restaurant chain — was strewn across the home’s entrance and the bathroom.
The man said he was going to the bathroom when a “tall male” dressed in all black suddenly appeared, started yelling and attacked, “causing him great pain,” according to deputies. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Evidence at the scene, including a cellphone left in the bathroom, pointed deputies toward a neighbor, identified as Eric Collazo.
When speaking with Collazo, deputies noticed a “strong smell of alcoholic beverages,” the report said.
He told deputies that he entered the house believing it was his, mistook his neighbor for an intruder and attacked.
“I don’t play around,” he said, according to the report.
Collazo added that he had been able to enter the home using his own house key. Deputies took Collazo’s key, tested it on the neighbor’s front door and found that it worked, the report said.
“It is unknown as to how the key works at the victim’s residence, however, investigators believe the issue may be related to the builder of the residences,” BCSO officer Johnny Garcia told KSAT.
Collazo was booked into the Bexar County jail on a charge of injury to the elderly, records show. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 1.
