Things We Saw Today: Pro-Bolsonaro Rioters in Brazil Storm Capitol Buildings

    [ad_1]

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro with Donald Trump
MARCH 19: U.S. President Donald Trump and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro shake hands after a joint news conference at the Rose Garden of the White House March 19, 2019 in Washington, DC.

It’s grim out here folks. Rioters in support of fascist former president Jair Bolsonaro have violently stormed the capitol buildings in Brasília today to protest what they believe was a “stolen election” in a move that feels eerily similar to our own insurrection on Jan 6, 2021. Protestors have broken through the armed police and set up barricades, and even used poles and other weapons to force the security teams off of their horses. However, other Pro-Bolsonaro police assisted them inside. According to the New York Times, thousands of protestors “ascended a ramp to the roof of the congressional building in Brasília, the capital, while a smaller group invaded the building from a lower level, according to witnesses and videos of the scene posted on social media.” Luckily neither the Brazilian congress nor current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva were in the buildings.

Meanwhile, Bolsonaro has been “vacationing” in Florida and trying to avoid extradition charges for the multiple crimes he has been accused of committing while in office. He claims to be staying only for a month, but methinks he is going to try and stay much, much longer. – The New York Times.

Fans across the internet celebrated David Bowie today on what would have been the rock superstar’s 76th birthday, including this charming anecdote from goddess Marlee Matling:

In heartbreaking news, especially for Gen-Xers, child actor Adam Rich died today at the age of 54.

Rich played Nicholas, the youngest son on the classic 70s TV drama Eight is Enough. The show was inspired by the family of Tom Brayden, a real-life newspaper columnist who actually did have eight children. The show ran for five seasons. Rich would go on to have guest appearances on hit shows like Fantasy Island, CHiPs, and Small Wonder throughout the late 70s and early 80s. Fans and family are mourning his loss.

And finally, because we could all use some good, wholesome fun to end our weekend with, I present to you: young Keanu Reeves interviewing people at a Teddy Bear convention in 1984. It is pure. It is good. Let his little giggle as he plays with the teddies wash our troubles away.

  • Things We Saw Today: Please Cast Nicolas Cage in Star Trek!

Things We Saw Today: Please Cast Nicolas Cage in Star Trek!

    [ad_1]

Maybe 2023 is starting off on a good foot after all! Nicolas Cage gave an interview with Yahoo Entertainment reporter Kevin Polowy on Friday in which he shared some surprising news while discussing his new film The Old Way.

Polowy mentioned he had heard rumors that Pedro Pascal was trying to recruit Cage to join the Star Wars family of television shows (and films) but Cage quickly jumped in and shut him down by revealing that he isn’t interested in Star Wars because… he’s a trekkie! That’s right! Apparently Cage is a diehard Star Trek fan and would only be interested in joining that long-running sci-fi franchise. To which I can only say, yes please! Who do we have to beg to make this happen! And also, can we please see him in full Klingon attire. That is my dearest wish.

Meanwhile, more horrifyingly evil anti-drag and anti-trans legislation is trying to push its way forward in Arizona. The three bills propose defining “people dressing opposite of their biological sex at birth and exaggerating their gender” as “adult content.” And also say that these “acts” can only be performed at strip clubs and after 12 noon on Sundays. Anyone who violates these laws would end up with a criminal record. These laws are not only heinous but stupid and a flagrant violation of civil liberties.

Basically, the only good thing to come out of the mess that was the House Speaker vote (er, votes) was Hakeem Jeffries’ speech accepting the torch from Nancy Pelosi. He took the GOP to school, and I mean literally! His clever and scathing speech went through the entire alphabet, from A to Z, letting the Republican congressmen have it! The library was open and they were read for filth. Now let’s see if he can put his money where his mouth is and actually stymy these bozos.

Oh and one more Mike Rogers brawl meme for the road because I can’t stop laughing:

On Reddit, the r/relationships subreddit stirred up some spicy holiday beef when a woman shared that her cousin gifted her OnlyFans link to the spouses and boyfriends of all of her relatives! When her family got upset her response was “it’s not sexual it’s just marketing.” Incredible stuff.

And finally, it’s time to dive into the murky world of YA/romance novel Twitter. You may remember romance novelist Susan Meachen making headlines recently after she revealed that she had not in fact died (by suicide) two years earlier. Well here is her “apology.”

Yes, you read that right. Not only did she not apologize, but she also claimed that faking her death was the same as writing a really great book! That she was just “creating a New Reality!” Honestly, this is one of the most delusional and hilarious double-downs I have ever seen. As Dril says “you do not, under any circumstances, “gotta hand it to them” but you can laugh your ass off because this is pure gold.

Things We Saw Today: Twitter Has Yet Another New Policy That Might Be Illegal

    [ad_1]

    wario elon musk

After a week of Mastodon links being tagged as “potentially harmful” in people’s tweets, Twitter Support announced today that it was banning the sharing of links from any of their competitors – oops, I mean any other “prohibited” social media sites. That included mega-platforms like Facebook and Instagram, but also up-and-coming smaller sites like Mastodon and Post, which many had been sharing as potential viable alternatives to Twitter. It also included that linktrees (the ways in which many creatives including writers, artists, and sex workers use to promote their businesses) would also be banned. But it turns out this is potentially violating a law of the European Union.

It does appear to be a direct violation, and along with his mass lay-offs and firings, might be another legal and financial blow against Elon and the sinking ship that is Twitter.

Meanwhile, Argentina beat France and won the World Cup! Masses of fans across the world, but especially in Buenos Aires, took to the streets to celebrate the victory.

Meanwhile, Austin Butler hosted Cecily Strong’s last episode of SNL. For the last sketch, the cast joined Butler and an emotional Strong on stage as he did his best Elvis and serenaded her with “Blue Christmas.” Strong and the rest of the cast joined him in the song while holding each other and I’M NOT CRYING YOU’RE CRYING.

In “today I had to learn about ‘gendered foods”” news, a woman wrote an AITA post about a date telling her that girls were not supposed to eat steak on dates because it was quote “not ladylike” and “not gentle.” When she correctly told him to shove it and left she met with pushback on her behavior from a friend’s brother and boyfriend. They thought that the date was right and that men get turned off by women eating red meat? Straight men continue to not be ok!

Outspoken journalist Taylor Lorenz appears to be permanently suspended from Twitter. Musk claims that it is because she violated his new doxxing policy by including an address in an article she wrote 2 YEARS AGO. But really we know it’s because she was continuing to ask him for clarifications and follow-ups on his many outlandish claims and has been openly critical of him since his take over of the platform. – Deadline

Things We Saw Today: P-22, The King of Los Angeles, Has Died

    [ad_1]

Southern Californians, and Angelenos in particular, are mourning today because our beloved mascot and champion of the people, P-22 was humanely euthanized. P-22 first came into our hearts and trail cams over a decade ago and has charmed us ever since. A bachelor for his entire mountain lion life, he nevertheless had won the love of an entire city. He migrated from the Santa Monica mountains to his home in the Hollywood Hills, where he lived for the rest of his life.

Unfortunately, over the past few months, he began displaying abnormal and erratic behavior, including acting aggressively toward people and their dogs. The LA wildlife team was able to sedate and capture P-22 in order to provide medical service and retirement to a nature preserve. Unfortunately, they discovered he had several chronic illnesses and grievous injuries from being hit by a car and they had no choice but to euthanize him. Rest well our shy, solo King and may you be prowling mightily in the great beyond. – LA Times

In happier news, Mike Flanagan favorite Rahul Kohli is shooting his shot. He tweeted today about his interest in being cast as the Gunslinger for Flanagan’s upcoming The Dark Tower series for Amazon Prime. As someone who finds Kohli very hot, I am for this!

Mama Mia! A semi-truck crash spilled 40,000 pounds of meatballs onto a Virginia highway! I can’t tell if those firemen are lining up to work, or to have dinner. – mystateline.com

Piers Morgan Defender, former talk show host, and wife of Ozzy, Sharon Osbourne was hospitalized this morning after a medical emergency. I hope she’s ok, and I also hope she at some point apologizes for defending Morgan’s racist and misogynistic remarks about Meghan Markle! – Variety

And finally, Ohio’s heartbeat law – which would effectively ban most abortions in the state – will remain blocked after a ruling on Friday from the state’s First District Court of Appeals. Thank god! This means that, for now, abortions in Ohio can continue through 20 weeks of pregnancy. Which is the same standard that the state had maintained (until this point) for years. – Dayton Daily News

Things We Saw Today: Steve Martin and Martin Short Give Us the Christmas Carol Sketch We Didn’t Know We Needed

    [ad_1]

Christmas is just around the corner, and so Martin Short and Steve Martin came together on SNL this Saturday to remind us of the true meaning of the holiday: maiming street urchins with coins! That’s right. Short, as Scrooge, and Martin, as the Ghost of Christmas Present, gave us a new horrifying and hilarious spin on the Dickens’ classic story A Christmas Carol. Except in their version, there is a lot more blood. And a lot more screaming. You can watch the entire sketch below:

In much less delightful news, The New York Times reported today that public schools have been working with the military and increasing the amount of students that they are mandatorily enrolling in ROTC classes. The goal is to increase enlistment numbers that have been steadily dropping in recent years (gee I wonder why) and ROTC classes are one tactic for bumping those numbers up because it has been proven that at least 44-50% of students in ROTC will go on to enlist after graduation. Of course, this being America, the schools that are the most targeted for both ROTC programs and mandatory enrollment are schools with a majority Black or POC student body.

Even Congressman Ted Lieu, who is a veteran himself, condemned the practice. As he should! We do not stan conscription, indoctrination, and the military industrial complex in this house! – The New York Times.

Speaking of upsetting things, Patti LaBelle’s concert in Milwaukee was interrupted and cut short last night when someone called in a bomb threat. Security quickly ushered a confused Patti LaBelle off stage and the auditorium was evacuated safely. But still I must say, what the hell? And also, how dare they (they being whoever was responsible for this.) At least our national treasure is safe.

In adorable news, Jamie Lee Curtis and Colin Farrell interviewed each other for Variety about sobriety and their lengthy acting legacies. It’s a charming read, but the internet exploded in delight when Variety released their exchange about the famous rock scene from Everything, Everywhere, All At Once.

This just confirms my belief that Colin Farrell is a precious cinnamon roll who must be protected at all costs. – Variety

And finally, it’s time for our dose of “How is Elon Musk Ruining Twitter Today?” And the answer is two-fold. First, he tweeted this baffling attempt at “comedy:”

What crime does he think Fauci committed? Aside from garbage anti-vaxx conspiracies… oh right. He believes those. More importantly, does anyone on the right understand what pronouns are or how to construct a joke? Methinks the answer is no.

He also confirmed a rumor that tweet lengths were going to be expanded from 280 characters to… 4000. Yes. FOUR THOUSAND.

If his goal is to make Twitter unusable, which it seems to be, that is definitely a solid step down that path. Twitter is not a blog for a reason Musk! Go buy Reddit or something and leave us alone!

Things We Saw Today: James Gunn Continues to Dunk and Debunk on DC Rumor Mill

Happy Saturday my sweet babies! It might be a chilly December weekend but we have a few things to keep up warm. Case in point: James Gunn continues his new DC reign by calling out false rumors and dunking on trolls. This time it was tackling a baseless rumor about him disliking Henry Cavill.

Twitter Troll @TheDenofNerds tweeted “James Gunn does not like Henry Cavill.” Gunn was quick to jump in and declare this false. @TheDenofNerds, clearly not noticing the big flashing red “DANGER” signs tried to retort back at Gunn saying “Even more ppl have reached out to me since you said this to tell me you really don’t like him. Just saying what I heard.” Which lead to the shutdown of all shutdowns when Gunn fired back with:

    Total annihilation.

Meanwhile, fans across the internet have been celebrating the 44th anniversary of Christopher Reeve’s iconic first performance as the son of Krypton in Superman: The Movie. Everyone has been sharing what they loved about Reeve’s performance and why he was excellent as both Superman and Clark Kent.

Netflix continues its savage run of canceling fledgling shows after just one season when it announced today that fantasy show The Bastard Son and The Devil Himself would not be returning for a second season. The new show had a small but dedicated following and many are maligning Netflix’s lack of marketing and promotion for the show’s failure. – Gizmodo

White women are embarrassing themselves on TikTok again. This time the formula involves posing or dancing while claiming their exes must still be thinking about them. Also many mentions of “vanilla wives.” It’s cringe ladies! You don’t need to do this!

And finally, it wouldn’t be a roundup without the latest garbage pouring out Twitter HQ. This weekend’s hot mess involves Elon Musk forcing employees to sign draconian NDAs in order to stop the flood of leaks of internal communications and information since he took over the company. The new policy claims that any breach of an NDA will result in an immediate lawsuit.

This is of course highly ironic considering that Musk has had Matt Taibbi and Bari Weiss release countless work emails, documents, and the actual personal email accounts of ex-employees in their ridiculously lame “Twitter Files” saga. So much for “free speech” right?

Things We Saw Today: Ron DeSantis’s Lawyers Forced To Admit They Know the Definition of Woke

    [ad_1]

Ron DeSantis makes a face speaking from a podium at a Turning Point rally.

Well well well. The Andrew Warren suspension trial is in full swing down in Florida and Governor Ron DeSantis’s legal team is in hot water. The trial, which is challenging the lawfulness of DeSantis suspending Hillsborough County State Attorney Andrew Warren, presented Warren’s legal team with the opportunity to force DeSantis’s team to define the word “woke” after DeSantis used it several times to disparage Warren. The lead lawyer on DeSantis’s team defined woke as: “The belief there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them.”

Which means…. they do have an accurate understanding of the word! And the real world! DeSantis is just fine with it. He’s not dumb, just evil. – Florida Politics

In other GOP clown news, Chris Christie’s niece was arrested on a Spirit Airlines flight after causing a scene, accusing a Hispanic family of smuggling cocaine, biting an officer, and screaming that she’s related to a very important person. – DailyMail

And speaking of dick moves, let us please gather around and laugh at this guy who thought this potato was a penis. Incredible work.

James Wood is continuing to be a lunatic and is threatening to sue everyone from Twitter to the DNC, to his hometown for forcing him to have a neighbor. – Yahoo

And finally, Donald Trump continues to rant about the “stolen” 2020 election on Parler. This time he declared that everything must be done to undo the results including suspending several parts of the constitution. It feels like this is quite possibly the first time a former President has called for the suspension of our country’s main legal document, which means the White House was forced to respond. They said, “um… no.” (A paraphrase.) – The Washington Post

Things We Saw Today: James Gunn Confirms That Is Bucky’s Real Arm in ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’

    [ad_1]

Time to breathe a deep sigh of relief because we all made it through Thanksgiving weekend intact! All of us that is, except for Bucky Thee Barnes, the Winter Soldier himself! As we saw in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, Nebula (Karen Gillan) was so filled with the Christmas spirit that she gifted Rocket with what appeared to be Bucky’s mechanical arm! And James Gunn took to Twitter today to confirm that it is indeed his!

Not only did he confirm that is Bucky’s actual arm but he made sure to dunk on a dumb troll who was complaining that Nebula having the strength and ability to steal it was somehow “forced inclusion.” It is now canon indeed, thank you, James Gunn!

Meanwhile, Marjorie Taylor Greene continues to be the worst and also possibly dumbest politician on Twitter when she attacked advertisers withdrawing from Twitter as somehow being “corporate communism” and not a literal example of capitalism because businesses are choosing who they want to buy ad space from. Capitalism is communism it turns out! War is peace! Marjorie Taylor Greene, is she intentionally pulling an Orwellian double-speak or is it just that she doesn’t understand what words mean.

Antonio Banderas spoke about who he could see replacing him but the internet flew into a frenzy when our favorite non-binary pirate Vico Ortiz threw their hat into the ring. Honestly, this is the only casting I want now. Just look at the possibilities…

A real-life While You Were Sleeping has occurred! According to ABC7, a man who was comatose after a horrific motorcycle accident woke up, but thought it was still the year 1993 and proposed to his wife for a second time. It’s sweet and sappy but I had to give you guys a nice “aww” moment before we delve back into the horrors of modernity. – ABC7

Speaking of which, the New York Times reported today that the NYPD would be partnering with Amazon’s Ring app (the device that provides video footage of front doors to homeowners) to surveil footage and look for possible crimes. Our surveillance state just got a whole lot more surveillance-y! – The New York Times

And finally, in sad news, the beloved genre director Albert Pyun passed away at the age of 69. He was known for action-packed, low-budget, straight-to-video features that became cult classics. His most famous films were Cyborg, The Sword and the Sorcerer, Nemesis, and the 1989 version of Captain America. He worked with legendary action actors like Jean-Claude Van Damme and Burt Reynolds. Rest easy, Albert. – Variety

Move over Black Friday it’s time for Scary Saturday! And that means really taking in and absorbing the unsettling horror that is the “Miss Lovely Eyes” beauty competition held in Florida in 1930. Shared to Twitter from the Vintage Everyday blog, we can now behold these women as they glare at us from behind their Hannibal Lecter meets a Dixie paper plate masks. The woman in the center, much like all of us, is deeply regretting her life choices.

Meanwhile, Politico has revealed that California Governor Gavin Newsom had a phone call with the White House immediately after his reelection in the 2022 midterms in which he assured them that he would not attempt to primary President Biden in 2024. People have really been pushing this narrative because Newsom has been vocally critical of the Democrats soft stances since taking power, and I think Newsom definitely has eventual designs on the White House, but please let’s just wait for Biden to declare he’s even running again before we all jump on Politico’s rumor mill. – Politico

The pop-star Irene Cara passed away in her home this morning at the age of 63. She burst onto the scene in the 1980 musical Fame, as Coco Hernandez one of the students of New York’s famous High School for the Performing Arts. She released a hit record that included the title theme of the film as well as the ballad “Out Here on My Own” which led her to be nominated for two Grammys and a Golden Globe. She also co-wrote and sang “Flashdance… What a Feeling” for the film Flashdance. This became another huge hit and won her the Oscar for Best Original Song and a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance. Dance one out for this iconic diva. – CNN

Twitter continues its descent into 4chan territory after an extremely unserious list was leaked from right-wing/fascist trolls that they were intending to target for mass reporting and suspension. They claimed everyone on the list was an “antifa” activist/left-wing terrorist but list included everyone from actual organizers and social justice-oriented accounts to Britney Spears, the “weirdlilguys” cat account, Best of Next Door, and comedy writers. Basically just anyone they decided was too popular or well-liked? Many of the accounts were forced to go on private mode as a result.

Things We Saw Today: Be Soothed by This Handsome Irish Man in a Sweater Playing the Cello

    [ad_1]

Patrick Dexter plays the cello outside

Happy Saturday my loves! Fall is in full swing, and that means we are wrapped in our favorite blankets, sipping our mugs of tea, and warming our hands at the fiery blaze of Twitter’s ongoing implosion. To continue the immaculate autumn vibes, it’s time to sit back and watch a handsome Irish man in a very good sweater play beautiful music on his cello. The musician is Patrick Dexter and he graciously posts his music on the internet for us to enjoy while the world burns. Thank you Patrick!

Now that we have been fully soothed by some gorgeous music, it’s time to once again get mad at the rest of the news! Including:

The sad news that Mehran Karimi Nasseri, the Iranian man who spent 18 years living in Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport, has passed away – fittingly enough in an airport terminal. The events of Nasseri’s life were the loose inspiration for Steven Spielberg’s 2004 film The Terminal. Tom Hanks played Viktor Navorski, the character based on Nasseri. Rest in peace Mehran Nasseri, and safe travels in the beyond. – Seattle Times.

Meanwhile, Twitter was creeped out by losing Republican Senate candidate Blake Master’s disturbing campaign video. He spends a long time talking about how silencers make shooting guns a “more pleasurable experience.” Feeling even more relieved that he lost to Democrat Mark Kelly!

The FTX crypto scandal continues to grow, with CNN reporting that over $1billion in client funds is now missing at the failed crypto firm. Honestly, who doesn’t love to read about the continued failure of pyramid schemes – I mean crypto companies! – CNN

In big ick-factor news, Alec Baldwin has decided to countersue the armorer and various crew members of Rust over Halyna Hutchin’s wrongful death on set last year. Baldwin claims the countersuit is to clear his name of any involvement, after he faces his own suits and potential criminal charges. – People

And for our final dose of rage for the evening, Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett gave a speech at a dinner for the Federalist Society in which she mocked the abortion rights activists that have been protesting on and off since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. I guess this means the protestors just need to become louder and more constant! Just saying! – The Huffington Post

Troubled musician and former child star Aaron Carter (the younger brother of Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter) passed away in his Lancaster home today. Carter, once known for his childhood music career and breakout album Aaron’s Party (Come and Get It), with songs like “I Want Candy,” and “That’s How I Beat Shaq,” had struggled with a very public battle with addiction and mental health issues. He was only 34 years old.

In happier news, beloved character actor Armin Shimerman celebrated his 73rd birthday today! Shimerman is most well known for his role as Quark, the Ferengi nightclub owner in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Shimerman was also the weasely Principal Snyder in Buffy: The Vampire Slayer along with a decades long career in voice work. Scores of fans took to twitter to wish him a happy birthday and to that we also have to add: Happy Birthday Armin!

Meanwhile, those of us still left on Twitter were left confused and appalled by this hideous and baffling waterfall bed listed on Zillow. For only $8million this messy, ugly, death trap can be yours!

    • In other news, the New York Times just released a deep dive into Ron DeSantis’ brief time as a high school teacher. Spoiler alert: he tried to party with the seniors and the kids were mostly not fans! – The New York Times
    • Quentin Tarantino gave an interview where he claimed that he would never direct a Marvel movie because “You have to be a hired hand to do those things. I’m not a hired hand. I’m not looking for a job.” I have a feeling the internet is going to add this to the Discourse pile. Make some room Scorsese! – The Los Angeles Times

And that’s all the news that is fit to print! Happy Saturday my lovelies!
