Everyone’s Favorite ‘Simpsons’ Meme is Becoming a Chia Pet

    [ad_1]

If you’ve never used the meme, you’ve surely been in at least one online conversation where someone has dropped an image of Homer Simpson slowly backing into a hedge.

Now, the popular clip is reportedly being turned into a Chia Pet.

    What Is A Chia Pet?

There was a time in the 1980s when the Chia Pet commercial jingle was seared into everyone’s brains.

    “Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia!”

The jingle set off a craze of people clamoring for a terra cotta planter ram that you covered with seeds that would sprout into something that looked like hair or wool.

The Chia Pet would eventually evolve to be offered in version that resembled other animals and eventually, people. Even in 2024, you can still buy a Chia Pet that resembles late painter Bob Ross or a character from The Golden Girls.

At the height of The Simpsons popularity, there was a Chia Pet was released that allowed you to grow hair on Homer Simpson’s famous nearly-bald head. Now, it appears the brand is ready to head back to Springfield for another collab.

How To Get A Homer Hedge Chia Pet

One of the most common memes or GIFs used in recent years has been a clip of Homer Simpson slowly backing into tall bushes after an awkward conversation with neighbor Ned Flanders.

According to KnowYourMeme.com, the clip is from a 1994 episode of The Simpsons titled “Homer Loves Flanders.” Homer appears out of the bushes wanting to hangout with Ned Flanders only to learn his neighbor has other plans without him. Homer slowly fades back into the bushes.

The clip was first uploaded as a GIF in 2010 and has become short of a cultural phenomenon for this looking to express their own awkwardness in conversations. The real-life popularity of the meme was even parodied in a 2019 episode of the animated show.

The Simpsons Man, an internet personality who creates content about Simpsons-related toys and games, revealed this week there is a new Chia Pet that is about to drop based on the famous scene.

A video shared on YouTube shows a terra cotta Homer standing against what looks like a wall. The wall area can be covered with seeds that will grow too make it look like Homer is walking out of the hedge.

So far, there has been no announcement of the new Homer release on the official Chia Pet website. There is, however, a listing that has already popped on the website for a Canada-based toy retailer saying the item will debut this year.

  • 25 Commercials You Know By Heart If You Grew Up in the ’90s

25 Commercials You Know By Heart If You Grew Up in the ’90s

    [ad_1]

Nostalgia is a strange and complex emotion. I never would have predicted decades ago that when I was an adult, I would get strangely wistful for the days when TV shows would stop every 15 minutes to sell you sodas and cars and toys.

But back then no one knew that in 30 years time, television advertising would feel like an archaic relic of a bygone era. Streaming TV didn’t exist; hell, the internet barely existed back then! Neither did DVRs, for that matter. If you were watching TV, odds are you were doing it live — with no way to pause, rewind, or fast forward through those commercials. So you wound up watching a lot of advertisements. Some played so endlessly that they became permanently etched in the corners of your mind, waiting to burst forth the next time someone passes a jar of Grey Poupon mustard.

If that sensation sounds familiar, then this list is for you. It contains 25 ads that you probably have memorized if you grew up in the 1990s. And yes, you can watch them all below — but be warned. Revisiting them may jar something loose in your brain next. Next thing you know, you’ll be singing about fresh goes better in life with Mentos.

    Got Milk?

In this iconic commercial of the ’90s, a history expert is unable to answer a trivia question and win an easy $10,000 because his mouth is full of peanut butter and he just ran out of milk. He tries in vain to spit out the name “Aaron Burr!” but without milk, all is lost. Then, the famous kicker: “Got milk?” This ad, which played endlessly through the ‘90s, was directed by none other than future Transformers filmmaker Michael Bay.

    Wasssaaaaaap?

Wasssaaaaaap?” In the late 1990s and into the early 2000s everyone was saying it, and all for one reason — and no, not because people at that time were just very curious what was up with other people. It’s because in this Budweiser spot, everyone was saying “Wasssaaaaaap?” That was the whole thing! A huge pop culture moment, all from dudes in a beer ad saying one word over and over.

    The Budweiser Frogs

Speaking of Budweiser, a few years earlier they took the ad world by storm with a Super Bowl commercial about three frogs endlessly croaking the company’s name. This commercial had its own future A-list director — Gore Verbinski, who went on to make the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The first Bud frog ad proved so popular it led to a whole series of commercials where the frogs met other creatures like chameleons and a ferret.

    Mentos: The Freshmaker

In the 1990s, there was only one mint allowed if you were a hip teenager type looking to get the upper hand one some stuffy, snoody grownups. Mentos! It was the Freshmaker! In a famous series of ’90s commercials, assorted good-looking youths would brainstorm clever solutions to adult-related problems while popping Mentos into their mouths. They never did figure out how not to make Mentos explode in soda though.

    Grey Poupon

If you’ve ever been driving along in your Rolls-Royce and had a starchy British dude pull up alongside and ask “Pardon me, do you have any Grey Poupon?” this commercial is why. (If that’s never happened to you, just take my word for it; these commercials were hugely popular. And if you owned a bottle of Grey Poupon back then, and you didn’t ask “Pardon me, do you have any Grey Poupon?” before you poured some on your hot dog, they put you in jail.)

    “Riiiiiicolaaaaaaa”

One lozenge loomed over the rest in the 1990s, and it was the one advertised by dudes in the Alps screaming “Riiiiiicolaaaaaaa!” and blowing an oversized horn. What does that have to do with soothing your throat? You know, I never thought about it before. I guess maybe if you’re yelling  “Riiiiiicolaaaaaaa!” at full volume all day, you probably have a pretty scratchy voice? If a Ricola is good enough for these guys, it’d be good enough for you too, right?

    Chia Pet

It’s the pottery that grows! Just soak your Chia overnight, then spread your seeds. Keep it watered and watch it grow!.I’ve never owned a Chia Pet in my life, but I’ve seen so many Chia Pet commercials throughout my lifetime that I know how they work anyway. Ch-ch-ch-chia!

    Tombstone Pizza

To this day, when someone asks me “What do you want on your pizza?” I have a very hard time not instinctively responding (in a haughty British accent) “Pepperoni and cheese!” That’s because of this ubiquitous Tombstone frozen pizza commercial from the 1990s, in which a man awaiting a firing squad turns down a blindfold and a cigarette, but demands a pepperoni and cheese Tombstone when asked. I must have watched this ad at least 2,000 times.

    Miss Cleo

This commercial advertising the psychic services of one Miss Cleo became so legendary it got its own documentary on HBO Max a few years ago titled Call Me Miss Cleo, which unraveled the story of the woman behind the character. (Her real name was Youree Dell Harris.)

    Robert Loggia for Minute Maid

This might get my vote for the best commercial of the ’90s. A kid refuses to drink a new kind of Minute Maid OJ. He doesn’t trust his parents when they tell him he’d like it. Okay, so who would he trust? “I don’t know, Robert Loggia?” the boy quips, naming the old school character actor. Of course, Loggia himself then walks in and grumbles “Billy! Minute Maid Orange Tangerine tastes great!” (“If you say so, Mr. Loggia!” the kid responds.) So bizarre.

    The Taco Bell Chihuahua

The ’80s had Spuds MacKenzie. The ’90s had the Taco Bell Chihuahua (played by a cute little critter named Gidget) who appeared in a series of ads that all ended the same way: With Gidget (through the use of CGI) declaring “Yo quiero Taco Bell.” Although the ads were eventually protested in some quarters for promoting negative stereotypes, they were initially so popular that talking Taco Bell Chihuahua plush dolls were produced in 1998.

    Crossfire

The board game Crossfire had already been on toy-store shelves for decades by the 1990s. But it got a major bump in profile at that time by a very eye-catching TV commercial that featured kids playing Crossfire in a vaguely dystopian setting. “It’s some time in the future! The ultimate challenge: Crossfire!” an agitated narrator screamed, before a hair metal band launched into a theme song that concluded on a hilariously high note (“Cross-fiyaaaaaaaa!”) This commercial makes this game look incredible. Having played it (surely as a result of this ad’s successful brainwashing) I can say with authority: It wasn’t nearly as exciting as this trailer made it look.

    Creepy Crawlers

Another popular ’90s kids toy with an unforgettable jingle, Creepy Crawlers is (I just learned doing a little online research) a toy that dates back decades, and was originally known as the “Thingmaker.” It used colorful goop heated inside moulds to produce rubbery creatures of assorted shapes and styles. After fading from popularity (in part because some government groups had concerns over children cooking chemicals with heat in their basements, those killjoys), the Thingmaker returned in the early 1990s with new branding and that unforgettable “Creepy Crawlers” jingle.

    Bubble Tape

Gum innovations of the 1990s brought us Bubble Tape, a six-foot long roll of bubble gum sold in a coil that unfurled from a dispenser. And I know it was six-feet long because the commercials for Bubble Tape all ended the same way: With the announcer declaring it was “Six feet of bubble gum. For you! Not them!” (Them being squares like parents, lunch ladies, and assorted other Olds.)

    Ring Pop

It was a ring around your finger, Ring Pop. It was a juicy jewel of flavor, Ring Pop. A lollipop without a stick, a ring of flavor you could lick. Reader, I recalled all of that information from memory; I didn’t need to rewatch the old Ring Pop TV commercial, because it’s lodged in my brain for all of eternity. I forgot to take a chicken out of the oven last week and burned it to a crisp, but I will never forget the Ring Pop song.

    Gushers

While the 1980s were the prime decade of fruit snack innovation, the ’90s had its share of bold new fruit-adjacent treats. The one that made the biggest impression was Gushers; jewel-shaped snacks with fruity gunk inside that “gushed” when you bit into them. Their distinctive ads throughout the 1990s featured kids’ heads bursting with gunky goodness. They were all vaguely nightmarish — why would a kid want to eat something that made their mouth explode? — but this particular one, where kids’ heads transformed into fruits, was especially disturbing. And guess what? It worked! Gushers broke through the crowded fruit snack market and are still sold in stores today.

    Pure Moods

The ’90s belonged to Pure Moods, a series of new-age music compilations heavily marketed through TV commercials. You could sail away Enya, ride a chariot of fire with Vangelis, and head to Twin Peaks to Angelo Badalamenti. (The song selection is weirder than you remember.) These commercials never worked on me; I never dialed the 1-800 number or sent my $15.99 for cassette (or $17.99 for CD!) to the P.O. Box in Colorado Springs. But now that I’ve rewatched the commercial, I might have to fire this up on Spotify.

    1-800 COLLECT

Pure Moods wasn’t the only 1-800 number in heavy ad rotation in the 1990s. There were endless commercials hyping the various options customers had for collect calls as well, including the ever-present 1-800-COLLECT. I’m still not sure why this was a superior option to a standard collect call — and I’m not about to explain the concept of collect calls to younger readers, we’d be here all day — but I can say that there were many commercials for this service. The one above features Ed O’Neill, then the star of Married… With Children, in his recurring role as the leader of the “Phone Patrol.” There were others with David Spade and even Larry “Bud” Melman from Late Night With David Letterman.

    Toys “R” Us

The signature Toys “R” Us jingle debuted prior to the 1990s, but for a lot of kids it’s the version in this 1991 commercial — with the cool-ified “I don’t wanna grow up / Don’t wanna grow up!” intro — that made the biggest impression. (For some reason this commercial makes me think of Poochie from The Simpsons. This Geoffrey gets biz-zay!!) I know Toys “R” Us is still around in some places and in some forms, mostly as the toy section in Macy’s department stores, but the Toys “R” Us promoted in these ads was a child’s paradise — to the extreme!

    Crocodile Mile

“You run! You slide! You hit a bump and take a dive!” Back in the day, these sort of Slip and Slide-esque backyard water toys never lived up to the excitement of their commercials. In fact, I vividly remember one painful bruise I got on my stomach from diving onto one that wasn’t adequately slippery.) But how could any slide live up to the thrill of Crocodile Mile, an Aussie-themed rubber slide with a cartoon alligator on it? Viewed today, this looks hopelessly cheesy. In the ’90s, if you had one of these friction-burn generators, you were the coolest kid on your block.

    New Trix Cereal

Here’s one thing I’ve learned through the years: Kids are dumb. What difference does it make whether Trix are shaped like little colored balls or miniature fruits? They taste the same either way. But when Trix “upgraded” their cereal in exactly this way it drove kids wild. This commercial was the talk of elementary schools all over the country. Looking at it now, you have to wonder: Why can’t the Trix rabbit eat the cereal? Why are Trix just for kids? Is there some rule against giving rabbits sugar? The poor rabbit’s hungry and the cereal is in his name! These cruel kids are starving the poor guy.

Pepsi’s “New Look. Same Great Taste.”

This ad from the early ’90s introduced a redesigned Pepsi can (and the amusing slogan “New Look. Same Great Taste”) with a scantily clad Cindy Crawford, then one of the biggest supermodels on the planet. I don’t know if the ad improved Pepsi’s sales, but for some reason this commercial made quite an impression on me when I was 12 years old. I can’t figure out why…

    Gatorade’s Be Like Mike

No athlete was as ever-present in TV commercials throughout the 1990s as Michael Jordan. The NBA legend was famous for appearing in spots for Nike, Hanes, Coca-Cola, and more. But the spot that is best remembered may be the one he did for Gatorade, which gave MJ his own theme song: “Be Like Mike,” in which a chorus of kids sing praise unto Jordan and his great basketball skill. (The implication: Drink Gatorade, and you too can someday dunk a basketball.) The ads and the slogan became so associated with Jordan that when Hollywood made a movie a few years later about a kid who gets magic basketball powers by wearing Jordan’s old sneakers, they titled it Like Mike.

    Lil Penny

Jordan made plenty of sneaker commercials in the 1990s, but his best-known ones are probably the early Air Jordans, which were ’80s ads. The ’90s sneaker commercials that I always think of are the ones where Penny Hardaway traded quips with a miniature “Lil Penny” puppet — voiced by comedian Chris Rock. The commercials ran all through the mid-’90s and got a lot of airplay, but this one sticks out in my mind because of Rock’s final line — “Tell ’em Lil Penny from the science club says hello!” — which, for some reason, my friends and I used to quote in school ad naseum.

    Bagel Bites

If you take one thing away from this list, it should be this: Commercial jingles in the 1990s were absolute ear worms. And here is another one, for frozen Bagel Bites. “Pizza in the morning, pizza in the evening, pizza at suppertime. When pizza’s on a bagel, you can eat pizza anytime!” The melody is so catchy I don’t think I ever considered the lyrics’ meaning. Just because you put it on a bagel, you can eat pizza any time? How does that work? Only a madman (or maybe someone desperately trying to relive their childhood) would eat pizza bagels three times a day.

These defunct fast food items have gone down in history. Wouldn’t you love to eat them again?

‘Cruel Intentions’ Comes to TV With First Series Trailer

    [ad_1]

The generation that grew up haunting video stores in the late 1990s and early 2000s knows Cruel Intentions well. A true Blockbuster Video classic, it featured early performances by Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Selma Blair. The premise: Dangerous Liaisons set in late ’90s New York City, with a pair of step siblings (Gellar and Phillippe) who enter into a bet over whether the latter can bed an innocent young woman (Witherspoon) at their school. The film was a sizable hit, and got a prequel and a sequel (both without the original cast, both straight-to-video).

25 years later — be right back, I have to go vomit out my soul before I wither into dust — Amazon’s made a Cruel Intentions TV series, with the same basic premise again, this time set at a present-day Washington D.C. college. The show is written and produced by Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher; the original director of Cruel Intentions, Roger Kumble, is involved as an executive producer.

Watch the trailer for the new Cruel Intentions below, which looks just as horny as the original.

Here is the show’s official synopsis:

In this new adaptation, Cruel Intentions follows the elite students of Manchester College, a Washington, D.C.-adjacent university, where reputation means everything, fraternities and sororities are the gold standard, and two ruthless step-siblings, Caroline Merteuil and Lucien Belmont, will do anything to stay on top of the cutthroat social hierarchy. After a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire Greek Life system, they’ll do whatever is necessary to preserve their power and reputation – even if that means seducing Annie Grover, the daughter of the Vice President of the United States. Hearts will be broken, loyalties will be tested, and secrets will be revealed in this modern-day royal court that is Manchester College.

Cruel Intentions premieres on Prime Video on November 21 in over 240 countries. That’s a lot of countries.

  • Grey’s Anatomy’s Scott Speedman Reveals What Happens When He Messes up Surgery Scenes

Grey’s Anatomy’s Scott Speedman Reveals What Happens When He Messes up Surgery Scenes

    [ad_1]

Despite making its debut way back in 2005, Grey’s Anatomy continues its long-running journey with the ongoing Season 21. The show thereby has several actors who have been attached to the setup since its very beginning. As such, the cast has developed an endearing bond among themselves that seems to extend beyond the camera as well. In a recent discussion, actor Scott Speedman, who portrays Dr. Nick Marsh in the show, narrated several funny incidents with the crew, highlighting their companionship.

Scott Speedman says Grey’s Anatomy crew hits his hand if he makes mistakes while filming

Scott Speedman stated that a Grey’s Anatomy crew member corrects him by striking his hand if he commits mistakes while filming surgery scenes for the show.

The Canadian actor disclosed this amusing anecdote during his recent appearance on The Spotlight with Jessica Shaw. Speedman revealed that a female on-set member always calls the actor out for his faults. “There’s one lady there who just yells at me every time I’m doing a surgery scene, which I love,” he said.

Speedman further shared that the Grey’s Anatomy peer hits him on the hand if he strays away from the given instructions. “It’s just how I’m holding something, or I’m not doing something right, or she told me to do something.” he stated, adding, “She comes over and, like, hits your hand and is like, ‘You’re not doing that right.’ Ya know, you’re trying to do dialogue, which you have no idea what you’re talking about, and you’re trying to do it with a serious face.”

Despite the medical drama entering Season 21, the series continues to emphasize the authenticity of their surgery sequences, as per Speedman.

Scott Speedman made his Grey’s Anatomy debut in Season 14 in a guest role and eventually became a main character for Seasons 18 and 19. Since then, Speedman’s Nick Marsh has acquired a recurring role in the show and serves as an on-and-off love interest for Ellen Pompeo’s Dr. Meredith Grey.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 premiered on September 26 and releases a new episode every Thursday.

  • Stephen King’s ‘Carrie’ Is Getting a TV Series

Stephen King’s ‘Carrie’ Is Getting a TV Series

    [ad_1]

Stephen King’s long and hugely successful career as a novelist began with 1974’s Carrie, which was turned into a hit 1976 movie, a 1999 sequel, a 2002 TV remake, a 2013 big-screen remake, and an infamously disastrous 1988 Broadway musical.

    Next up: A television series.

Mike Flanagan is reportedly developing a Carrie TV series for Amazon MGM Studios. Flanagan is no stranger to King adaptations; his last three films as a director were all adapted from King’s work — Gerald’s GameDoctor Sleep, and the recent The Life of Chuck.

According to Variety, here is the official synopsis for Flanagan’s Carrie:

[a] bold and timely reimagining of the story of misfit high-schooler Carrie White, who has spent her life in seclusion with her domineering mother. After her father’s sudden and untimely death, Carrie finds herself contending with the alien landscape of public High School, a bullying scandal that shatters her community, and the emergence of mysterious telekinetic powers.

Flanagan will be writer, producer, and showrunner on the series.

READ MORE: 10 Movies That Became Infamous Broadway Musicals

The original Carrie film helped establish director Brian De Palma as a major young Hollywood director. (It also featured an early role from actress Sissy Spacek, who scored an an Academy Award nomination for the role.) It remains a defining horror film of the 1970s, and one of the best Stephen King adaptations in history.

Most of the other Carries have not left quite that large, or as positive of an impact. The Rage: Carrie 2 was a flop, while 2013’s Carrie (starring Chloë Grace Moretz in the title role) was a modest hit that was largely forgotten before too long. But Flanagan is about as big a name as exists in the world of streaming horror shows, thanks to stuff like The Haunting of Hill House and The Fall of the House of Usher. He’s also very good at adapting Stephen King. So this could turn out well.

Tell Me Lies Creator Gives Disappointing Update on Tom Ellis’ Oliver & Teases Season 3 Time Jump

    [ad_1]

Tell Me Lies creator and showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer gave a disappointing update on the future of Tom Ellis‘ Oliver as the series ended its sophomore run. Introduced in Season 2, the character quickly became a fan favorite. Oppenheimer also hinted that Season 3, which Hulu hasn’t officially greenlit yet, might have a time jump.

Meaghan Oppenheimer says Tom Ellis’ Oliver unlikely to return in Tell Me Lies Season 3

Oppenheimer said in a new interview that Tom Ellis is unlikely to return as Oliver in the prospective Tell Me Lies Season 3.

Oliver is a professor at Baird College, a fictional school in Upstate New York that serves as the primary setting for the series. His wife is Marianne (Gabriella Pession), an English professor also teaching at Baird. In the second season, Oliver has an affair with Catherine Missal’s Bree.

When asked if the Lucifer star would stick around for more chapters of the show, Oppenheimer told Variety, “I don’t think so.” “I think Tom was just wanting to do one season. I think that we wrapped up his storyline in a way that really worked for me. I don’t know where else we would go after that with him. I think we could bring Marianne back, maybe. There’s a lot more story to tell with her. But I think we kind of learned that Oliver is so broken and hollow by the end of this season that I’m ready for Bree to be done with him,” she added.

Oppenheimer hints Tell Me Lies Season 3 will have a time jump

In the same interview, Oppenheimer teased that “there would probably be a time jump” in the third season.

Just like the inaugural chapter, Tell Me Lies Season 2 unfolds in two separate timelines, with one taking place in 2008 and the other in 2015. Oppenheimer mentioned that while there might still be some plot threads from 2008 left to be explored in Season 3, she thinks “it would be a little bit shifted in the sense that there will probably be more 2015 than 2008.” The main characters are in college in the 2008 timeline and reunite in the 2015 one. Accordingly, the time jump, if it happens, will likely be from 2008 and not 2015.

  • Peacock’s New The Office Series Adds 4 New Cast Members

Peacock’s New The Office Series Adds 4 New Cast Members

    [ad_1]

Peacock’s new The Office series has added four new cast members.

In January 2024, it was announced that Greg Daniels was developing a follow-up series to The Office. The series isn’t described as a reboot or spin-off; rather, it’s a mockumentary show with a brand-new cast that is set within the same universe.

The series is rumored to be titled The Paper, though this has not been officially confirmed at this time.

Per Variety, Gbemisola Ikumelo (Black Ops, A League Of Their Own), Alex Edelman (Unfrosted), Tim Key (The End of the F***ing World), and Eric Rahill (Friendship) have all joined the cast as undisclosed characters. Ikumelo, Edelman, and Rahill will additionally serve as writers on the series.

The series’ cast also includes Domhnall Gleeson, Sabrina Impacciatore, Melvin Gregg, Chelsea Frei, and Ramona Young.

What else do we know about Peacock’s new The Office series?

“The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters,” the synopsis reads.

Daniels co-create the new series alongside Michael Koman. They also both serve as executive producers along with Ricky Gervais and Stephan Merchant, both of whom created the original British version of The Office. Howard Klein, Ben Silverman, and Banijay Americas also serve as executive producers. It is a production by Universal Television.

“It’s been more than ten years since the final episode of The Office aired on NBC, and the acclaimed comedy series continues to gain popularity and build new generations of fans on Peacock,” NBCUniversal Entertainment president Lisa Katz previously said in a statement. “In partnership with Universal Television and led by the creative team of Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, this new series set in the universe of Dunder Mifflin introduces a new cast of characters in a fresh setting ripe for comedic storytelling: a daily newspaper.”

A premiere date for the new Office series has not yet been announced.

  • Max Cancels ‘Velma’ After Two Seasons

Max Cancels ‘Velma’ After Two Seasons

    [ad_1]

The latest Scooby-Doo TV show won’t do(o) a third season.

Max announced they have canceled Velma, the latest animated series based on the long-running Hanna-Barbera cartoon franchise. The show was technically a prequel to other Scooby-Doo media, and didn’t actually feature its title character. Instead Velma followed Velma Dinkley (voiced by Mindy Kaling) and other members of the Mystery Incorporated team before they officially became a group.

Max had this to say about the cancelation

Over the past two seasons, Mindy [Kaling] and [Mindy producer] Charlie [Grandy] have created an incredibly fun and fresh world within the iconic whodunit franchise. While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we thank them for their compelling coming-of-age storytelling, unrivaled clues, and hilarious hijinks.

READ MORE: 10 Popular TV Shows That Were Almost Canceled Too Soon

The Velma Halloween Special, which just debuted on Max, now serves as the series finale.

In addition to Kaling, the series cast included Glenn Howerton as Fred, Constance Wu as Daphne, and Sam Richardson as Norville (the show’s version of Shaggy).

By my count, there have been at least 13 different Scooby-Doo series through the years, although an exact number can be hard to discern because Hanna-Barbera would repackage the segments in different permutations and with other TV series as well. (Remember The Scooby-Doo/Dynomutt Hour?) There have also been numerous Scooby-Doo movies as well.

In fact, the last big-screen movie, 2020’s Scoob! was supposed to get a Christmas-themed sequel, Scoob! Holiday Haunt, but Max canceled that film before it ever premiered. It was permanently shelved like several other recent Max and Warner Bros. projects like Batgirl and Coyote vs. Acme.

‘The Penguin’: Every Episode 3 Easter Egg and Secret

The Penguin might be set in The Batman universe, but this is not a show about Batman. It’s a gritty crime story, like The Sopranos or Tulsa King, and that’s what we love about it. But that doesn’t mean the show doesn’t reference DC comics, or that it’s not full of little Easter eggs you might have missed.

That’s what our latest Penguin video is all about. In it, we’ll show you all the DC references and hidden secrets in Episode 3 of The Penguin, “Bliss.” We’ll discuss how this show includes Bella Reál, the Gotham City mayoral candidate who previously appeared in The Batman, examine the various families in the show, and what lessons they taught their respective children, and the possible appearance by DC’s Talon of the Court of Owls in this week’s episode. • New 9-1-1 Spin-off Announced, Ryan Murphy Reacts to Lone Star Cancellation

New 9-1-1 Spin-off Announced, Ryan Murphy Reacts to Lone Star Cancellation

    [ad_1]

While one door has been closed with the 9-1-1: Lone Star cancellation, another one will be axed down soon enough. Franchise co-creator Ryan Murphy confirmed that a new 9-1-1 spin-off is in the works.

Created by Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, the procedural drama first premiered on Fox in 2018 before it moved to ABC during its seventh season. It then spawned a spin-off in 2020 — titled Lone Star — and ran for four seasons, with Season 5 having recently arrived.

Unfortunately, the fifth season of Lone Star will be its final season.

What did Ryan Murphy say about the planned 9-1-1 expansion?

“Tim Minear and I are working on a new spinoff that we’re actually writing, and that we hope to get on the air next fall,” Murphy told Variety

On the Lone Star cancellation, Murphy said: “Sadly, we all love ‘Lone Star,’ but the financials just didn’t work. It’s a Disney company that was on a Fox network, and it just was never going to work. And we had a long run of it. So now we’re going to launch a new show in a new city that I can’t name, but it’s fun. And ‘9-1-1’ moved to ABC and suddenly became, I think, the biggest show on Thursday night. They obviously have an appetite for that, so we’re going to give them another one that I really love.”

Other details about the new spin-off have yet to be announced.

9-1-1 chronicles the lives of LA’s first responders, including dispatchers, police officers, paramedics, and firefighters. The franchise features the likes of Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Oliver Stark, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Rob Lowe, Brian Michael Smith, and more.

The eighth season of 9-1-1 airs on Thursdays on ABC. Lone Star, on the other hand, airs on Mondays on Fox.

  • ‘Brilliant Minds’ Off To Promising Start On NBC As Premiere Surpasses 9M Viewers

‘Brilliant Minds’ Off To Promising Start On NBC As Premiere Surpasses 9M Viewers

    [ad_1]

Brilliant Minds is off to a good start for NBC.

Michael Grassi’s medical drama has attracted 9.2M cross-platform viewers to its premiere episode since the September 23 debut, NBCUniversal says. That’s up 138% from the live + same-day audience of 3.9M.

The audience declined slightly for Episode 2, attracting 3.5M live + same-day viewers on Monday night, though that still was good enough to make it the top scripted show of the night across the broadcasters.

Actually, in the 18-49 demo, Brilliant Minds has seen the smallest Week 2 decline among the last five NBC drama debuts.

Brilliant Minds also had the third best debut for any NBC show on Peacock, coming in behind Found and Night Court — two shows that have demonstrated strong staying power since they premiered. In the six days post-premiere, Found had already surpassed 10M viewers after securing 3.8M in live + same-day.

In the coming weeks, it will become more clear whether Brilliant Minds will continue to perform for the network, especially as delayed viewing becomes more of a success indicator than same-day numbers.

Brilliant Minds, based on the revolutionary life of queer neurologist Oliver Sacks, follows Quinto’s Dr. Wolf and a team of interns as they use unconventional methods to help solve their patients’ ailments, all while wrestling with their own mental health and relationships. The show, which got a series order last October, hails from writer and executive producer Michael Grassi and director/EP Lee Toland Krieger.

  • John Amos Passes Away, Good Times Actor Was 84

John Amos Passes Away, Good Times Actor Was 84

    [ad_1]

John Amos has passed away. The Good Times actor was 84.

John Amos passed away at age 84 on August 21, 2024, in Los Angeles due to natural causes.

“It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned,” Amos’ son Kelly Christopher Amos said in a statement, via The Hollywood Reporter. “He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.”

Amos was born on December 27, 1939, in Newark, New Jersey. He played football at Colorado State University and had training camp tryouts with the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs.

Amos’ acting career kicked off in 1970 when he played Weatherman Gordon “Gordy” Howard on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. He went on to play James Evan Sr. in 61 episodes of Good Times, though he was dismissed from the show at the end of Season 3 after clashing with the writers.

“We had a number of differences,” Amos previously said. “I felt too much emphasis was being put on J.J. in his chicken hat, saying ‘Dy-no-mite!’ every third page. I felt just as much emphasis and mileage could have been gotten out of my other two children, one of whom aspired to become a Supreme Court justice, played by Ralph Carter, and the other, BernNadette Stanis, who aspired to become a surgeon. But I wasn’t the most diplomatic guy in those days, and [the show’s producers] got tired of having their lives threatened over jokes. So they said, ‘Tell you what, why don’t we kill him off? We can get on with our lives!’ That taught me a lesson — I wasn’t as important as I thought I was to the show or to Norman Lear’s plans.”

Following that, Amos starred in series such as Future Cop, Hunter, 704 Hauser, In the House, The West Wing, The District, All About the Andersons, and more. He played Fred Wilkes in three episodes of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

His filmography included 1982’s The Beastmaster, 1988’s Coming to America, 1990’s Die Hard 2, 2012’s Madea’s Witness Protection, 2021’s Coming 2 America, and more.

ComingSoon sends condolences to Amos’ family and friends at this time.

The new episode of The Penguin features a flashback scene set in Arkham Asylum — and the prison uniforms and visiting room we see are both exactly the same ones we saw in The Batman, the 2022 Matt Reeves film that The Penguin spins out of. In these scenes Cristin Milioti’s character Sofia is referred to as “The Hangman” — which is the character’s name from the acclaimed DC Comics miniseries Batman: Dark Victory.

But those are just a couple of the Easter eggs, DC references, and little details you might have missed in the second episode of The Penguin. In our latest DC video, we’ll break down all of them. • ‘Grotesquerie’ Star Niecy Nash-Betts Breaks Down Premiere Episodes, Teases Travis Kelce’s Introduction & More

‘Grotesquerie’ Star Niecy Nash-Betts Breaks Down Premiere Episodes, Teases Travis Kelce’s Introduction & More

    [ad_1]

SPOILER ALERT! This post contains details from the first two episodes of FX’s Grotesquerie.

Niecy Nash-Betts leads Ryan Murphy‘s Grotesquerie as a seasoned detective who, while battling her own addiction, must throw herself into perhaps the most disturbing case of her entire career.

The first two episodes of the FX series, which launched on September 25, establish Lois Tryon as a once-revered investigator whose alcoholism has begun to affect both her work and home life. But, when she begins investigating a series of gruesome killings with religious undertones, she’s determined to solve the case at all costs.

She enlists the help of a journalist nun named Sister Megan, who helps provide some context about the Biblical connections to each of the crime scenes — until the end of the second episode, when the police discover a scene that needs no explanation. The killer, who Lois is starting to feel is taunting her, recreates a bloody version of The Last Supper at a church’s altar with the corpses of multiple unhoused people.

“The Last Supper. But, for whom? You? Me? All of us?” Nash-Betts’ Lois wonders as she stares at the scene laid out before her, stunned.

It leaves audiences with an eery feeling that things will only get worse from here.

Nash-Betts is coming off of her acclaimed turn in Murphy’s Dahmer as Glenda Cleveland, Jeffrey Dahmer’s nosy neighbor who tries to warn police about him to no avail. She tells Deadline that, at this point, she’ll never say no when Murphy comes knocking.

“I’m happy that I graduated in Ryan’s world to a leading lady. I really wanted my peers to know that they could trust me with whatever caliber of work there is for me to do, and I think that this hopefully will confirm that,” she said. “I can make them laugh and I can make them cry.”

In the interview below, Nash-Betts spoke with Deadline about the first two episodes of Grotesquerie and teased what’s in store for the rest of the season — including the introduction of Travis Kelce’s character in his much-anticipated scripted TV debut.

DEADLINE: How is Lois’ addiction going to impact her ability to solve this case, and her career in law enforcement more generally?

NIECY NASH-BETTS: Lois has a very, very long career in law enforcement, and she has been a big deal for many of them. She is the master of her game. So even in her addiction, she is better with context clues than anyone on their best day. Som because she’s very passionate about what she does, she is going to seek to unravel the thread, no matter where she is in her addiction.

DEADLINE: She’s a very layered character. How did you start to peel back some of those layers to figure out who she is at her core?

NASH-BETTS: Detailed conversations with Ryan Murphy. We really talked for hours about this woman, about her backstory, about what makes her tick, about where she is in her marriage versus where she is in her career. Originally, she was more of a public success and a private failure. And then, because of her addiction, it started to seep over into her work life.

DEADLINE: So she’s no longer a different person at home than she is at work?

NASH-BETTS: At this point, I don’t think that she is trying to hide it. Yes, this is where I am in my personal life. But also, yes, I am going to catch the serial killer. She’s too far gone.

DEADLINE: I really enjoy the dynamic between Lois and Sister Megan. First, how is it working with Micaela Diamond?

NASH-BETTS: Oh, first of all, I love Michaela diamond. She is visually stunning. The camera loves her. You can’t take your eyes off this girl. I told her, I said, ‘Baby, you are a star.’ She had mainly been living in the theater world, and this is her first entry into being a series regular on television, and I felt like she did it seamlessly. I think she is so talented, and she’s gonna be one of the greats.

DEADLINE: Why do you think Lois began giving that information to Sister Megan that she really shouldn’t have?

NASH-BETTS: Well, because these crimes are not typical. They all have a religious overtone, and because of that, there may be things that Lois doesn’t know, and she may be able to track it faster, get to it faster, with more insight in the religious and spiritual world.

DEADLINE: Ryan Murphy often explores the intersection of horror and religion. How was that experience, for you, on this show in particular?

NASH-BETTS: Well, you know, there is horror and evil everywhere. He could have picked anything. I think there are enough stories in the world where people could identify. It just so happens that this one is Catholicism.

DEADLINE: Some of the murders are very horrific. The Last Supper scene at the end of the second episode was really jarring. How were those set pieces?

NASH-BETTS: Yeah, the first time, it’s jarring, because you read it in the script and you’re like, ‘Oh, okay.’ And then when you actually see the wonderful job that the crew has created in building the world, it takes your breath for a second. Then I go into comedy mode, because I don’t want this whole set to be down for the rest of the shooting day. So you got to find the levity in the day, even though you’re facing this horrific scene.

DEADLINE: Lois has this confrontation with Nurse Redd, accusing her of being a sexual predator. It’s hard to tell if Nurse Redd’s actions are real or not, and I feel like the series is leaning into that intersection of reality and fantasy. What can you say about that?

NASH-BETTS: Ryan Murphy has a brilliant way of telling a story. All I can say is, maybe the things you think aren’t real are and vice versa. You just got to stay tuned.

DEADLINE: What are you looking forward to that will unfold for audiences this season?

NASH-BETTS: I’m looking forward to audiences meeting Travis Kelce’s character. I’m looking forward to a deeper connection with Lois and sister Megan, and I’m looking forward to the twists and the turns that people may not see coming.

DEADLINE: Have you spoken to Travis recently, since he’s about to make his TV debut?

NASH-BETTS: Yes, because at the premiere, we actually showed the first episode that he’s in. It went over really well. Audiences really liked him. And so, yes, we spoke about it, and I just gave him his props, and I told him, ‘You’re gonna be so happy with your work in this.’ He was very, very appreciative. I got to spend time with his mom at the premiere. It’s like, these are my folks now.

DEADLINE: It’s been great to see how supportive everyone has been of him.

NASH-BETTS: You gotta support people. Football life has a short period…and finding other things and other interests and other places you can be equally as great, I’m a champion of it.

DEADLINE: Your turn in Dahmer was critically acclaimed. You won an Emmy for it. It’s a different role, of course, but is there anything you took from that experience and that role that you brought to this one?

NASH-BETTS: Ryan constantly is offering me something that allows me to tap into a new part of my art, a new part of my instrument. So I’m very appreciative for that. But then he doesn’t just offer it up and leave you there. He offers it up and then walks you through it to get the best performance out of you. So because of that, he will always have me at ‘Hello.’
