  • Talk to Me: Horror Movie Gets Spin-off But Not How You Expect

    A24‘s 2022 horror hit Talk to Me is getting a spin-off in the form of a very unlikely collaboration.

    What is the new Talk to Me spin-off?

    Meta and XRTV announced that they are teaming up to create an immersive XR (extended reality) series based on the film. The mixed reality series will feature “cutting-edge technology and immersive storytelling elements that blur the line between fiction and reality,” and brings “terrifying action sequences directly into viewers’ space.”

    The new horror series will be created exclusively for Meta headsets and shot entirely in 3D. According to Meta and XRTV, the series will use “cutting edge mixed reality technology” to map the environments of viewers, and bring them into the story themselves.

    The Talk to Me spin-off will span six half-hour episodes, following the story of “young travelers chasing the ultimate party on a European island until they discover the Hand, a supernatural high deadlier than any drug.” Craig William Macneil (Them) will direct all six episodes, with Trent Atherton (The Wheel) writing all six episodes.

    No official release date for the XR Talk to Me spin-off series has been announced as of yet.

    Originally released in 2022, Talk to Me was directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, and was a massive success upon its release, becoming A24’s highest-grossing horror film. A sequel to the film, Talk 2 Me, was announced in 2023, with both Philippou brothers planned to return as directors.

  • WATCH: ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 Trailer Hints at Longtime Theory About Will Byers

    The official Stranger Things Season 5 trailer was released on Thursday (October 30), and it’s stacked with big reveals and exciting hints at the series’ epic conclusion.

    The trailer reveals that Hawkins is officially under military quarantine following the catastrophic events of last season—meaning Eleven, Mike, Will, Lucas, Dustin, and the gang are trapped in the town with “no end in sight,” according to Mike.

    In one glimpse from the adventure ahead, Lucas holds an unconscious Max as he tries to save her from a demogorgon in the hospital. Another moment shows little Holly Wheeler rushing over to her mom Karen in their kitchen, after or during what appears to be some sort of attack. One of the most thrilling teases reveals Eleven’s latest power: She can fly now. Or, super-jump, at least.

    There’s also a lot of crying: Jonathan cries while embracing his friends! Nancy cries as she washes blood off her hands! Dustin cries as he tightly hugs Steve! Everyone is very emotional.

    But the biggest revelation comes at the very end, where it’s revealed Vecna plans to use Will against his friends.

    “Will, you are going to help me… one last time,” Vecna tells Will, using his telekinetic powers to lift the terrified Byers teen off the ground and drag him toward him. The moment is quick in the trailer, but it’s an important one that appears to finally prove a longstanding fan theory about the final season, as well as Stranger Things in general.

    Fans have long theorized that the Mind Flayer and/or Vecna might use Will as a pawn for the Upside Down, and by the looks of things, it seems that will indeed be the case this season.

    After all, Will has been tethered to the Upside Down ever since he was dragged into the alternate dimension back in Season 1. Even though Joyce appeared to sever the connection in Season 2 by literally burning the Upside Down out of Will, the evil wasn’t truly killed, and so Will’s been feeling the menacing presence Vecna and the Mind Flayer ever since. (Remember all those scenes of him getting goosebumps and touching the back of his neck forebodingly? Yeah.)

    According to the official synopsis, Season 5 takes place in the fall of 1987. The synopsis reads:

    Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the Rifts, and our heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna. But he has vanished — his whereabouts and plans unknown. Complicating their mission, the government has placed the town under military quarantine and intensified its hunt for Eleven, forcing her back into hiding. As the anniversary of Will’s disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar dread. The final battle is looming — and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they’ve faced before. To end this nightmare, they’ll need everyone — the full party — standing together, one last time.

    Stranger Things Season 5, which officially wrapped production in December 2024, will be released in three parts: The first four episodes will hit Netflix on November 26, the next three episodes will begin streaming on Christmas (December 25), and the series finale will air on New Year’s Eve (December 31).

    Episodes will be available to stream beginning at 5PM PT/8PM ET on their respective dates.

  • Star Trek’s Zachary Quinto Returns as Spock, But Not How You’d Expect

    After nine years, Zachary Quinto is back as fan-favorite Vulcan Spock — just not for Star Trek.

    Why is Zachary Quinto dressed as Spock in Brilliant Minds?

    With Star Trek 4 stuck in development hell at Paramount, the NBC medical drama series Brilliant Minds has decided to give the fandom what it wants. Quinto’s lead character, Dr. Oliver Wolf, dresses up as the Enterprise’s first officer in the show’s upcoming Halloween episode. Quinto isn’t the only Brilliant Minds series regular to get in on the Star Trek fun though, as Tamberla Perry’s Dr. Carol Pierce will be dressed as Uhura, Spock’s colleague/love interest in the Kelvin timeline movies.

    ComicBook.com shared the first look at Quinto and Perry’s characters dressed as Spock and Uhura for the hospital’s Halloween festivities, which can be viewed below, courtesy of X:

    Created by Michael Grassi, Brilliant Minds is centered around Quinto’s Dr. Oliver Wolf, a neurologist whose avant-garde investigatory methods often unearth hard-to-find medical truths about his patients. The medical drama series is inspired by Oliver Sacks’ books The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and An Anthropologist on Mars. Besides Quinto and Perry, Brilliant Minds stars Ashleigh LaThrop, Aury Krebs, Teddy Sears, John Clarence Stewart, Brian Altemus, and Al Calderon.

    Quinto’s Spock reprisal should hopefully tide fans over until Paramount finally decides to move forward with a fourth Kelvin-set Star Trek movie, which has been in development since July 2016. Unfortunately, since the initial announcement, the movie has struggled to make any headway, going through several different creative teams. At the time of writing, Steve Yockey is reportedly writing the latest draft of the Star Trek 4 script.

    Despite the development complications, Quinto remains interested in reprising his role as Spock for Star Trek 4, stating just last month, “I would absolutely love to do another Star Trek movie. I don’t understand why we haven’t done one yet, but hopefully now that the Skydance and Paramount merger is moving forward, Skydance was the financier of all the Star Trek movies that we’ve done so far, and have been great partners in those films, and I would love to revisit it.”

    The Halloween-themed episode of Brilliant Minds Season 2, “The Doctor’s Graveyard,” will air on NBC on October 27, 2025.

  • Batman: James Gunn Gives Disappointing Update on Arkham Asylum TV Show

    James Gunn recently opened up about the once-planned Arkham Asylum TV show that was in the works from The Batman director Matt Reeves.

    What was James Gunn’s Arkham Asylum TV show update?

    Speaking to BobaTalks in a recent interview with the YouTuber, Gunn was asked about Reeves’ show, which was originally set to be a spin-off to The Batman and focus on the Gotham City Police Department. Gunn was asked if there were any hopes for the show to come back, and while he didn’t say no, his answer all but shut the door on it.

    “Hope? Sure. But that isn’t something that’s being developed by anyone right now. You know? Just didn’t work,” said Gunn.

    The show, which was originally rumored to be titled GCPD, went through many changes. Originally described as a drama about the GCPD, reports suggested that Reeves then spun those plans into a separate project that would’ve focused on the iconic asylum that houses many of Batman’s most legendary foes.

    For whatever reason, the show never materialized and Reeves ended up working on the award-winning and critically acclaimed series The Penguin instead. Whether or not Reeves will continue that series, or perhaps work on another DC project for Gunn, is unknown as of now. Currently, Reeves is working on the follow-up to The Batman, The Batman: Part II, which is set to release in theaters on October 1, 2027.

  • Everything New on HBO Max in November 2025

    If you have an HBO Max subscription (the price of which is about to go up, by the way) the big new show you can watch in the month of November is I Love LA from creator/star Rachel Sennott, best known from her work in the excellent Shiva Baby and Bottoms and Saturday Night. Her show, per HBO Max, is about “an ambitious friend group navigates life and love in LA.”

    Other titles coming to HBO Max in November includes two A24 releases from 2025: Ari Aster’s Eddington, about a mayor and a sheriff feuding in Covid-era America, and Materialists, a romantic comedy from Past Lives director Celine Song. (Past Lives is new on HBO Max next month too, by the way, and that is one of the best films of the decade.) They’ve also got a three-part documentary series about baseball legend Alex Rodriguez, Alex vs Arod.

  • ‘Stranger Things’ Series Finale Will Play in Movie Theaters

    The final episode of Stranger Things is so big it’s headed to movie theaters as well as streaming.

    Netflix announced today that the final episode of their hugely popular sci-fi series would screen in more than 350 theaters around the U.S. and Canada “starting on December 31, 2025 at 5:00pm PT, timed to the finale’s global premiere on Netflix, and run through January 1, 2026.” (In other words, if you don’t want to watch the episodes in theaters, they will be streaming on Netflix at the exact same time.)

    We’re beyond excited that fans will have the chance to experience the final episode of Stranger Things in theaters — it’s something we’ve dreamed about for years, and we’re so grateful to Ted, Bela, and everyone at Netflix for making it happen. Getting to see it on the big screen, with incredible sound, picture, and a room full of fans, feels like the perfect — dare we say bitchin’ — way to celebrate the end of this adventure.

    The news of Stranger Things headed to theaters comes on the heels of Netflix’s Kpop Demon Hunters having a hugely successful limited run in theaters around the country in a sing-along version. Despite the fact that the film had already been streaming on Netflix for weeks, the sing-along Kpop Demon Hunters grossed $18 million in theaters. (Netflix is now planning a second run in theaters with the sing-along version.) But Stranger Things is an even more unusual proposition for theaters because this is an episode of a TV show, not a film. (That said, the finale of Stranger Things is expected to be as long as any feature-length movie that plays in theaters.)

    For years, Netflix has insisted it made movies and television for streaming, not for movie theaters. Its films only played very small runs in theaters, often just to qualify for awards like the Oscars. But it appears that events like the Kpop Demon Hunters phenomenon have started to change their thinking about that.

  • Survey: Gen Z Wants Less Sex in Movies and TV Shows

    NSFW? No thanks! Sex is no longer a draw for young audiences seeking something edgy at the movie theater.

    Variety reports that according to new data from UCLA’s Center for Scholars & Storytellers, Gen Z viewers are tired of on-screen sexual content. (RIP to the raunchy teen sex comedy subgenre.)

    Released on Wednesday (October 22), the university’s annual Teens & Screens report, which surveyed 1,500 young adults and teens in August 2025, reveals 48 percent of Gen Z viewers believe there is “too much sex and sexual content” in modern movies and TV shows.

    But it’s not just the sex itself that’s turning off Gen Z audiences. Over 60 percent of viewers in the generation are tired of seeing sexual attraction emphasized at the core of romantic relationships on screen, and would prefer to see such relationships depicted “more about the friendship between the couple.”

    And sorry, Bella, Edward, and Jacob: Younger viewers are totally over the whole love triangle trope, once a staple of YA stories such as Twilight and The Hunger Games. They’re also not eager to see portrayals of toxic relationships, either, and would prefer healthier representations of romance in their media.

    In fact, according to the data, romance ranks low (third-to-last, to be precise) on the list of topics younger audiences want to see in their movies and shows.

    More than 54 percent of respondents shared they would like to see more characters who aren’t interested in pursuing a romantic relationship, while nearly 55 percent want to see more platonic, “different gender friendships” in their films and series.

    The findings regarding Gen Z’s indifference toward sex scenes in entertainment media may be surprising considering the sexually edgy lean of so many popular titles geared toward teens and young adults, from Superbad to Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Bottoms. However, the data aligns with an emerging generational trend among younger Gen Z’ers, who are reportedly leaning more conservative than their older Gen Z counterparts and the millennial generation before them.

    The King of Horror’s books have yielded feature-length films good and bad.   • Darkseid Is Not the Big Bad of the New DC Universe, Says James Gunn

    Darkseid is not coming to the new DC Universe any time soon.

    That’s according to James Gunn himself, who is interviewed on the latest episode of the ScreenCrush Crossover Universe podcast. And the dude would know; he’s the co-CEO of DC Studios after all.

    “Using Darkseid as the big bad right now is not necessarily the thing,” Gunn told us. As for why, he explained “For a lot of reasons: Because Zack [Snyder] did it so cool in his way. And because [of] Thanos in Marvel.”

    We also grilled James Gunn about the multiverse, the end of Season 2 of Peacemaker, how it will set up the next batch of stories in the DC Universe, what he likes about the Salvation Run comics, and what he is bringing to his version of the story. He also spilled the beans about the upcoming Mr. Miracle TV show — the pilot episode is written and sitting on Gunn’s desk, waiting to be read.

  • New Netflix TV Show Will Be Based on Hit Board Game

    Netflix has officially acquired the rights to the upcoming TV adaptation of Catan, based on the iconic Asmodee board game created by German designer Klaus Teuber. Besides receiving a TV show, the acquisition deal also includes plans for unscripted, live-action, and animated projects.

    What do we know about Netflix’s Catan TV show?

    At the moment, Netflix hasn’t revealed the creative team that’ll work on the Catan TV show. According to THR, it will be set in “a place where settlers must navigate bountiful and varied landscapes, shifting alliances and limited resources, while robbers roam the land.” Before the Netflix acquisition, producer Gail Katz and Sony Pictures had previously attempted to adapt the game into a movie in 2017.

    “Anyone who has played Catan knows that the intense strategy at the core of the game has endless opportunities for some serious drama,” Netflix executive Jinny Howe said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to partner across series, features, animation, and games to bring this world to life for hardcore Settlers and new fans alike.”

    Catan was first launched in 1995 in Germany, where it was originally called The Settlers of Catan. It is a multiplayer board game that requires players to take on the roles of settlers on a fictional island. Since its debut, it has already sold more than 45 million copies globally and been translated into over 40 languages.

    “When our father Klaus Teuber first introduced Catan 30 years ago, he imagined an aspirational world where people would gather by trading, building, and settling together — both at the table and beyond it,” Benjamin and Guido Teuber shared. “This collaboration with Netflix marks an exciting new chapter in that journey. For three decades, Catan has connected families and friends around the world. Now, we’re thrilled to see it inspire storytelling on a global stage — staying true to our father’s vision of creativity, strategy, and human connection.”

    Asmodee CEO Thomas Koegler added, “Millions of people are enjoying Catan since it was created, and for many, it remains a gateway to modern board gaming.   • 10 TV Shows That Beat the Netflix Curse: The Longest-Running Shows on Streaming

    Netflix is known for many things: launching the O.G. streaming service app, pioneering a recommendations algorithm, rescuing network TV shows, making bad movies, that thudding kerplunk sound at the beginning of every movie or TV episode they insist is spelled “TUDUM.” One thing the streaming service has become notorious for in recent years is its penchant for killing even well-liked new TV shows before they’ve made it beyond two or three seasons.

    Plenty of TV has succumbed to the Netflix curse. Beloved shows like Daredevil, Sense8, and Mindhunter have gotten the same treatment as stinkers like Jupiter’s Legacy, Fate: The Winx Saga, and the Cowboy Bebop remake. The only thing all of these shows share is they were cancelled early on in their runs compared to other shows on similar platforms or networks of the same caliber. A mediocre sci-fi series that would have run for five seasons somewhere like The CW doesn’t stand a chance on algorithm-driven Netflix, where even a placement in the Top 10 shows on the entire service isn’t enough to guarantee a second-season renewal.

    Still, there are plenty of Netflix series that have persisted past that mark, proving that it is indeed possible to be a long-running successful TV show on Netflix. Many of these are the early series made when Netflix was still establishing its own original programming, but there are still a few more recent shows that have broken through and cemented themselves in the pop culture landscape.   • HBO Max Raises Prices on All Plans

    Effective immediately, the price of HBO Max is going up.

    It doesn’t matter which version of HBO Max you subscribe to either. Whether you watch with ads, without ads, or have the premium subscription, they’re all going up.

    The price increase initially affects just new subscribers, but current subscribers will see their monthly subscription cost rise later this year as well, following a notification from the company and then their first bill on or after November 20, 2025.

    Here are the new prices for each plan:

    -HBO Max Basic With Ads: $10.99 per month or $109.99 per year (increase of $1 a month or $10 a year)

    -HBO Max Standard: $18.49 per month or $184.99 per year (increase of $1.50 a month or $15 a year)

    -HBO Max Premium: $22.99 per month or $229.99 per year (increase of $2 a month or $20 a year)

    HBO Max (also known as Max for a little while, because really who knows and likes the brand of HBO?) launched in late May of 2020. It previously raised prices in January 2023, and then again in June of 2024.

    In addition to HBO series new and old like The Sopranos, Game of the Thrones, and House of the Dragon, HBO Max has one of the better libraries in streaming, with an extensive roster of films from Warner Bros, and old movies from TCM. It is also the home of DC Comics movies and shows; if you want to keep tabs on Peacemaker, for example, HBO Max is pretty much the only way to do it. But if you want to watch all of the aforementioned programming without advertising, it’s now going to set you back at least $185 a year. Which isn’t cheap.

    In a related story, Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of HBO Max, announced today it was examining “strategic alternatives” following “unsolicited interest” in the company. Translated from Wall Street-ese, that means the company is looking to sell itself to the highest bidder. Previously, the company, which was formed by the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery in 2022, had said it was planning to split itself into two separate companies, one that would contain Warner Bros. studio, DC, HBO, and HBO Max, and another that would oversee the company’s linear cable channels and other assets.

    Some movies become more than movies. They leave indelible marks on the psyches of millions of fans, and become touchstones in people’s lives. Sometimes, they seep their way into other corners of pop culture as well; they get turned into toys or video games, or they get adapted to television.

    There are plenty of examples of TV shows based on movies that equaled or even exceeded their cinematic inspirations. For a lot of people, the first thing that comes to mind when you say the word “M*A*S*H” is the long-running Alan Alda sitcom, not the earlier Robert Altman movie. The same goes for Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Close your eyes and picture Buffy and you probably envision Sarah Michelle Gellar, not Kristy Swanson.

    1967’s Doctor Dolittle became one of the more notorious flops of its era; a big-budget musical extravaganza that nearly cost triple its original $6 million budget and wound up scoring a surprise Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards anyway. (Mark Harris’ great film history book Pictures at a Revolution chronicles the whole story if you want to learn more.) But that Dolittle brand was still strong enough that Fox Television decided to make an animated series a few years later — one clearly inspired by the film. It featured its own version of the movie’s Oscar-winning song “Talk to the Animals,” and had lead voice actor Bob Holt imitate the Dolittle film’s lead actor, Rex Harrison. Much like the big-screen version, though, the animated Doctor Dolittle was not a hit with audiences, and it ended after a single season of 17 episodes.

    Shaft (1973-4)

    It’s not uncommon for a hit movie to spawn a television series; it’s a lot rarer for the star of said movie to appear on the show. But the brief series of Shaft TV films that aired in 1973 and 1974 on CBS did feature Richard Roundtree as iconic detective John Shaft. Seven films were produced with Roundtree as Shaft but, in a curious choice, CBS aired Shaft on alternating Tuesdays with a show called Hawkins, starring Jimmy Stewart as a small-town Southern lawyer — not necessarily the same target audience as a show about the cat who won’t cop out when there’s danger all about (John Shaft). The combination did not take off, and both Shaft and Hawkins got the shaft after the 1973-4 season.

    Planet of the Apes (1974)

    When Hollywood had squeezed all the juice it could out of the original Planet of the Apes film series, the property was briefly moved to television. For the umpteenth time, a crew of astronauts from the human world were sent into outer space and somehow wound up in the far future, when Earth had been transformed into [dramatic pause for a twist you’ll never see coming] a planet of the apes! Franchise mainstay Roddy McDowell starred as a new ape character. But the same issue that afflicted the later Apes movies became even more of a problem on TV: The budget, and the fact that the less producers spent on their ape costumes and masks, the less convincing the sci-fi reality looked. Only 14 episodes were produced before CBS canceled the show due to poor ratings, at which point die-hard Apes fans screamed “You maniacs! You blew it up! Damn you! Damn you all to development hell!”

    Delta House (1979)

    National Lampoon’s Animal House barely got away with depicting the exploits of an anarchic fraternity in a big-screen movie with an R-rating. How did anyone think it could work under the restrictions of broadcast television? — or without the live wire personalities like John Belushi who made the film such a smash hit? And even if they thought it might work, who decided that the best time to air that show was at 8PM on Saturdays? One disastrous conceptual choice after another doomed Delta House from the start. It flunked out after 13 episodes in the winter and spring of 1979.

    Starman (1986-7)

    John Carpenter’s Starman left dangling a plot thread — the alien’s hybrid baby — which helped spawn this one-season wonder of a TV show. Set over a decade after the events of the film, the Starman’s baby is now a confused teenager (Christopher Daniel Barnes, better known as the voice of Peter Parker on the ’90s Spider-Man cartoon), and said E.T. (now played by Airplane!’s Robert Hays instead of Jeff Bridges) returns to Earth to help his son adjust to life on Earth. The show mimicked the format of The Fugitive; each week, the pair searched for the boy’s missing mother while using their alien abilities to help strangers they encountered along the way. Despite the intriguing premise, the series only survived on ABC for a single season.

    Teen Wolf (1986-7)

    The Teen Wolf series on MTV in the 2010s became a bit of a pop culture phenomenon. It lasted on the air for six seasons and 100 episodes, then went out with a feature film finale on Paramount+. But did you know that’s not the first Teen Wolf TV show? Just over a year after the premiere of the original Michael J. Fox Teen Wolf film, CBS debuted an animated show based on the film, with Townsend Coleman — AKA Michaelangelo from the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon — voicing Fox’s character. The show was so crummy it was done before Teen Wolf Too debuted in theaters in the fall of 1987.

    Police Academy (1988-9)

    One of the stranger pop culture trends of the 1980s was the kidification of R-rated movies into children’s entertainment. Numerous films that started as adults-only fare — RoboCop, First Blood, Police Academy — all wound up as Saturday morning or afterschool cartoons. In the case of Police Academy, all the familiar heroes from the film franchise returned, all voiced by soundalikes, with an emphasis on slapstick humor instead of raunchy pranks and double entendres. The show did well enough in the late ’80s to stay on the air for two seasons, but as the Police Academy film series faded into obscurity, the already lesser-known kiddie TV adaptation faded right along with it.

    The Karate Kid (1989)

    Like Teen Wolf, The Karate Kid had its own long-forgotten animated series decades before a popular TV revival. The animated Karate Kid began airing on NBC just a few months after The Karate Kid Part III opened in theaters with a plot and character designs inspired by the second Karate Kid film, when Daniel LaRusso followed his karate teacher, Mr. Miyagi, back home to Okinawa. On the animated series, an all-important shrine has been stolen, and Daniel-san and Miyagi must track it down. Although soundalikes replaced Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita in the key roles, Morita did provide voiceovers for most episodes in the show’s only season.

    Uncle Buck (1990-1)

    Terrific John Candy performance and sensitive John Hughes script aside, Uncle Buck always had a vaguely sitcomy premise: A single guy agrees to babysit his brother’s three kids while the brother and his wife leave on an important family trip. In the TV version — with Kevin Meaney in the Candy role — the parents die and Buck becomes the trio’s permanent guardian. (Dark!) Despite holding the dubious honor of being the first show in history to use the phrase “You suck!” Uncle Buck didn’t even get to finish out its first and only season before it was canceled. Six episodes (including one called, tee hee, “Sixty Candles”) were never aired. Despite the show’s failure, a second TV remake was created in 2016 with Mike Epps as Uncle Buck. That version had an even shorter shelf life, and ended after just eight episodes.

    Fievel’s American Tails (1992)

    One of the most improbable franchises in history, An American Tail, about a family of Russian Jewish mice who emigrate to America, continued into a sequel, Fievel Goes West, in which the family moves out to the frontier, and then the Fievel’s American Tails series, in which Fievel continues his adventures in the West. Several original voices from the film returned for the series, including lead actor Phillips Glasser, but other voices were replaced. Jon Lovitz’s character, for example, was now played by Homer Simpson voice actor Dan Castellaneta.

    A League of Their Own (1993)

    Only six episodes were produced — and only five were aired — of this show based on the hugely popular film about a team of female baseball players during World War II. It featured most of the characters from the movie — like abusive Coach Dugan and star catcher Dottie Hinson — but almost an entirely new cast. Which goes to show: It’s not always the premise that draws people into a movie; it’s the personalities of the performers that bring that premise to life. A second League of Their Own series premiered on Amazon in 2022. It was supposed to get a second season, but the plans for more episodes were abandoned in the aftermath of the 2023 Hollywood strikes.

    Problem Child (1993-4)

    I vividly remember the live-action Problem Child films, with John Ritter as a man dealing with the adopted son from hell. I have zero recollection of the Problem Child television series, which aired on USA for two seasons in the early 1990s. And I watched plenty of USA Network cartoons in that period. I even remember the cruddy Highlander animated series. (Yes, they made a cartoon about the movie where immortal warriors cut each others’ heads off. I told you theydidn’t give a crap about whether content was appropriate for kids back in the day.) Anyway, I guess I am part of the problem. Sorry, Problem Child.

    Beethoven (1994)

    The Beethoven movies were about an oversized St. Bernard who causes havoc for his owners. But it wasn’t like Beethoven was a magic dog or had some sort of ongoing inner monologue where he gloated over screwing with Charles Grodin. But when the decision was made to convert Beethoven to a cartoon series, it was also decided that he should behave according to the laws of cartoons, in which animals routinely talk and possess human personalities. Only 13 episodes were aired on CBS before the show landed in the network’s doghouse. Woof.

    Dumb and Dumber (1995-6)

    The cult of personality around Jim Carrey was such that all three of his breakthrough 1994 movies became animated series, none of which featured Carrey’s voice. Of those three series, the most successful was The Mask, whose cartoonish superhero was tailor-made for an animated show. That one hung around for a respectable three seasons and even got its own line of action figures. Ace Ventura’s rubbery face and outlandish antics also translated to cartoons; his series hung around for three seasons as well. Last and certainly least of the bunch was the Dumb and Dumber cartoon, which crapped out like Jeff Daniels after guzzling coffee filled with laxatives after only 13 episodes.

    The Crow: Stairway to Heaven (1998-9)

    The Crow film franchise had already introduced the idea of different people getting resurrected with the powers of the Crow, so spinning the concept off into a TV series should have been a cinch. Curiously, the TV version of The Crow instead brought back the Brandon Lee character from the first movie, now played by Mark Dacascos. That would just seem to invite all sorts of unnecessary comparisons to the original film and to Lee, who died during filming when a stunt went terribly wrong. The syndicated Crow series was eventually canceled after one year on the air.

    The Mummy (2001-3)

    Few film franchises evoke more Millennial nostalgia than the Brendan Fraser Mummy movies, thanks to their crowd-pleasing blend of horror and swashbuckling adventure. But you don’t hear a lot of talk about The Mummy’s subsequent animated series that was part of the Kids WB! animation block for two seasons in the early 2000s. It used the continuity of The Mummy Returns — which gave Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz’s characters a son to include on adventures. He became a convenient protagonist for a show targeted to children.

    Blade: The Series (2006)

    David S. Goyer, the main writer of the Wesley Snipes Blade franchise (and director of the final film, Blade: Trinity), created this sequel series for Spike TV.  Kirk Jones, AKA Sticky Fingaz, replaced Snipes, and Goyer wrote the pilot with DC Comics writer Geoff Johns. The show garnered solid ratings on cable, but its special effects and action made it costly to produce and Spike decided not to give it a second season. The creative team protested, of course, because some motherf—ers are always trying to ice skate uphill.

    Spaceballs: The Animated Series (2008-9)

    The recently announced Spaceballs sequel made good on the original film’s promise to reunite its heroes someday for The Search For More Money. But Mel Brooks had already made one (sort of) sequel to Spaceballs: A little-seen animated show that aired on the now-defunct cable channel G4 in the 2000s. In addition to its continuing parody of Star Wars, specific Spaceballs episodes spoofed other aspects of pop culture, including Jurassic Park and Grand Theft Auto. Some of the original cast did return, including director Mel Brooks, but those who had retired (like Rick Moranis) or passed away (like John Candy) were replaced. Hyped at San Diego Comic-Con 2007, the show didn’t materialize on G4 until a full year later, and then quietly blew through its single season of episodes.

    Napoleon Dynamite (2012)

    Quirky movie comedies tend to have a tough time on television. Clerks, one of the defining indies of the 1990s, had a very rocky go of it at ABC, despite the fact that it was created by Kevin Smith and featured most of the film’s original cast. History repeated itself a few years later when Jared and Jerusha Hess turned their cult hit Napoleon Dynamite into an animated show. Just like Clerks: The Animated Series, the Napoleon Dynamite cartoon got canned after only six episodes on Fox. How could they do that, those freakin’ idiots!

    The Continental: From the World of John Wick (2023)

    The Continental failed to leave much of a mark on pop culture, even though it was the first television series based on to the phenomenally popular John Wick series of action films. Rather than include John Wick himself, the show filled in the backstory of Ian McShane’s character Winston, and showed how he rose to power in his younger days at the New York Continental hotel. I enjoy the strange mythology of the John Wick universe more than most, but you had to really care about the staff of a posh hotel to to get into this one. With so many streaming shows and film glutting the market, Peacock decreed The Continental “excommunicado” after its premiere in 2023.

  • Palm Royale Season 2 Trailer: Kristen Wiig Returns for Chaos and Scandal

    Apple TV released the official trailer for Palm Royale Season 2, the Emmy Award-nominated comedy series.

    Kristen Wiig stars as Maxine Dellacorte, an underdog who attempts to enter the ruthless world of Palm Beach high society.

    The official synopsis reads, “As Maxine attempts to cross that impermeable line between the haves and the have-nots, Palm Royale asks the same question that still baffles us today: How much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice to get what someone else has?”

    What happens in the Palm Royale Season 2 trailer?

    “Palm Beach is no longer safe.” After a scandalous public breakdown, Maxine is deemed a social pariah. It will be an uphill battle to prove she belongs, but Maxine is determined to rule the town.

    “Along the way, she will uncover untold truths and finally understand what this town is truly built on . . . secrets, lies, and the occasional felony,” the Season 2 logline reads.

    Besides Wiig, Palm Royale Season 2 stars Laura Dern, Allison Janney, Ricky Martin, Carol Burnett, Josh Lucas, Leslie Bibb, Amber Chardae Robinson, Mindy Cohn, Julia Duffy, Kaia Gerber, Claudia Ferri, Jason Canela, Jordan Bridges, James Urbaniak, Roberto Sanchez, Rick Cosnett, and Ryan Dorsey.

    John Stamos and Patti LuPone headline the list of guest stars, which also includes Vicki Lawrence and Matt Rogers.

    Abe Sylvia is Palm Royale’s writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Executive producers include Wiig, Dern, Jayme Lemons, and Katie O’Connell Marsh. The series hails from Apple Studios.

    Released in March 2024, Palm Royale Season 1 garnered 11 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series and acting nods for Wiig and Burnett. The show won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music.

    Palm Royale Season 2 premieres with one episode on Wednesday, November 12, 2025. One episode will stream weekly on Apple TV until January 14, 2026.

    Netflix has already renewed one of its TV shows for a second season just a day after the show aired, promising fans even more.

    What Netflix TV show was already renewed for a second season?

    Sam Fisher is back, with Netflix announcing that Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Deathwatch will get a second season. Season 1 of the show is now out after premiering yesterday, and a second season is now already in the works.

    Splinter Cell: Deathwatch stars Liev Schreiber in the role as Sam Fisher, and also features Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Janet Varney, Helen Hong, Joel Oulette, Kari Wahlgren, Aleks Le, Kiff VandenHeuvel, Bella Dayne, and Navid Negahban.

    “In this first-ever adaptation of the acclaimed stealth video game franchise Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, legendary agent Sam Fisher is drawn back into the field when a wounded young operative seeks out his help,” reads the official synopsis of the show. “Produced by Ubisoft, in partnership with Derek Kolstad (John Wick), Sun Creature and Frost.”

    Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Death Watch is written and executive produced by John Wick creator Derek Kolstad. The voice cast also includes Janet Varney as Anna Grimsdottir, Joel Oulette as Thunder, and Miranda Raison. It is also executive produced by Helene Juguet, Hugo Revon and Gerard Guillemot for Ubisoft Film & Television, with Guillaume Dousse and Félicien Colmet-Daage serving as directors.

  • Krysten Ritter Teases Big Return for Jessica Jones

    Jessica Jones may have been one of Marvel’s darkest TV shows, but according to star Krysten Ritter, the future is looking bright for the superhero-turned-private investigator.

    Not only will Ritter return as Jessica Jones in the second season of Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again next year, but it seems like she’ll have a big role to play—and could even have more in store for fans of the cult character.

    Speaking alongside Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum at the Phase Hero Live! event during New York Comic-Con on October 12, Ritter hinted at the future of Jessica, sharing that a fourth season of Jessica Jones was planned before the series was pulled, including a proper conclusion for the character.

    “There’s a lot of stuff that I’ve felt there was room to explore and Brad and I talked about it. And I’m not going to say any of it, because we’re going to be doing it,” Ritter teased.

    Ritter made her debut as the jaded former superhero on Netflix’s Jessica Jones in 2015. The character appeared in 2017’s crossover mini-series The Defenders as well as Jessica Jones Season 2 and Season 3 in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

    In February 2019, the series was suddenly canceled ahead of its third-season premiere. The series was later retroactively officially added to Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, with the series taking place during Phase 2.

    A number of factors led to the cancellation of the cult series, including season-over-season declining viewership of Netflix’s Marvel shows, high production costs, and Disney’s regaining of the title’s rights as well as the company’s then-new streaming service, Disney+.

    Since then, fans have been calling for Jessica Jones’ return to the MCU, and pleading for a larger role for the fan-favorite superhero in the wake of Ritter’s critically acclaimed portrayal.

    Alongside Netflix’s other Marvel series, Jessica Jones was removed from the streaming service in March 2022 after Disney regained the licensing rights to the IP, and was subsequently added to Disney+.

    Marvel teased a slew of upcoming TV projects for the Marvel Cinematic Universe at New York Comic-Con 2025. They hyped the returns of animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and X-Men ’97 (shouldn’t that be X-Men ’98?), and showed teasers for Wonder Man,  and Daredevil: Born Again Season 2.
