    The Last of Us is off to a tasty start.

    The feature-length series premiere debuted on HBO last night, and it’s already one of the best video game adaptations ever after just a single episode. (Admittedly, there’s not much competition for that title.) The first season of the show inspired by the PlayStation video game series will continue weekly on HBO for the next eight weeks.

    So what’s in store? Well, if you know the games you have a pretty good idea. If not, here is the trailer that debuted after the show’s premiere. It follows Pedro Pascal’s Joel, Bella Ramsey’s Ellie, and Anna Torv’s Tess as they venture across the United States on a desperate quest to save humanity. It also features more of Gabriel Luna’s Tommy, Joel’s brother, who was key to The Last of Us premiere’s scenes prior to the zombie apocalypse, but who didn’t appear onscreen after the jump 20 years later. We’ll also meet Bill, a key supporting character played by Nick Offerman.

    THE LAST OF US takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal and heartbreaking journey as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

    New episodes of The Last of Us premiere on Sunday nights on HBO and HBO Max.

    Is ‘The Last Of Us’ Fungus Real?

    The Last of Us begins decades ago, on a television talk show in the 1960s. A panel of experts discusses the threat posed by novel viruses that could cause a global pandemic. (The parallels to our own world and time are hard to miss.) One of the experts says he is not worried about a pandemic, at least from a virus. Such viruses, he explains, have been around since the dawn of time and new ones appear on occasion. And why they may result in significant illness and death, mankind’s natural immunity eventually adapts, and the pandemic ends.

    What keeps this particular expert awake at night are fungi.

    Although they seem harmless to mankind — and some fungi are quite beneficial to humanity — some strains of fungus can be quite dangerous and even parasitic. They latch on to a host and can replace its tissue and even assume control of the host organism. Such fungi do not attack people because they cannot survive in temperatures as high as the human body. But, the talk-show guest warns, if the planet were to warm slightly, and these fungi evolved to match a warmer planet, that could change. And if that happened, there would be no treatment for such a fungal infection, or even a chance of a cure.

    In 2003 (at least within the fictional world of The Last of Us) that is exactly what happens. A mutated Cordyceps fungi begins infecting people around the world. Once infected, the sufferers basically turn into bloodthirsty zombies, hungering for human flesh and chasing after anyone who isn’t infected to satisfy their monstrous appetites. 20 years after that, the main story of the HBO series, based on the popular PlayStation video games, begins.

    Obviously, the Cordyceps infection zombies are fabricated, but the fungus itself is real, and it can infect insects in a way not entirely dissimilar to the way it infects people on the show. In fact a specific variety of Cordyceps called Ophiocordyceps unilateralis has the ability to create what are known as “zombie ants”:

    In carpenter ants, the fungus snakes its way through the body, taking control of their muscles. Then, shortly before its demise, the ant will leave the colony at sunset, find a high-hanging leaf or branch, and clutch it in its jaws. There, the ant hangs motionless until it dies and the fungus emits spores that rain down upon unsuspecting victims. That process has earned it the nickname “zombie fungus.”

    But what about zombie humans? It’s highly unlikely, but not entirely out of the realm of scientific possibility.

    David Hughes, an entomologist and biologist (and an advisor on The Last of Us games), has said “people get fungal diseases all the time” particularly if they are immunocompromised. The question, he argued, is not whether a fungus might infect someone, it’s whether a fungus might have the ability to control someone’s behavior. And he pointed to historical examples where people have been given “convulsive deliriums” by eating rye tainted by fungus. (Mr. Hughes seems like a really fun guy.)

    Hughes added:

    The last case was in 1954, thereabouts, in France when somebody intentionally sold a load of grain to a small French town containing the fungus. Everybody went mad and some 12-year-old girl tried to kill her mother with a kitchen knife… so yes, consuming the fungus will drive you crazy, and getting infected is possible. But it jumping from ants to humans and then onward [to other people] … that probably requires too many [improbable] circumstances to happen.

    In other words, it’s not 100 percent impossible, but it’s not particularly likely.

    That said, Cordyceps zombies are not exclusive to The Last of Us. One year after the original Last of Us game was released, the novel The Girl With all the Gifts used a nearly identical premise to explain its zombie infection: Someone became infected with Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, and it sparked a global infection and the breakdown of society. Like The Last of Us, The Girl With All the Gifts — which was adapted to a little-seen but very effective film in 2016 — is largely set decades later, when humanity’s few survivors are trying to find a cure for the fungal infection within a little girl who is infected but immune to its mind-controlling side effects.

    Essentially, Cordyceps zombies are good science-fiction: They’re not real, but they’re built on enough real scientific principles and phenomena to make them plausible — and thus scary.

    Mel Brooks’ 1981 spoof History of the World, Part I ended with a mocking teaser for a sequel, which would supposedly continue the saga with all new comedy bits, including “Hitler On Ice,” “A Viking Funeral,” and “Jews in Space.”

    Like everything else in a Mel Brooks movie, it was not to be taken seriously. But now, 40 years later, Hulu has actually made History of the World, Part II, as an eight-part miniseries. Mel Brooks, now 96 years old, stars in the series, and also serves as a writer and an executive producer on the project. The cast is absolutely stacked with huge modern comedy names. (One assumes they leapt at the chance to work with the guy who made Blazing Saddles, The Producers, and Young Frankenstein.)     Here’s the teaser for the show, which very much looks like it is in the Mel Brooks tradition of wild parody:

    This is Brooks’ first TV show since 2008’s short-lived Spaceballs animated series. Brooks hasn’t directed a film since 1995’s Dracula: Dead and Loving It. (He spent much of the intervening years working on the musical versions of The Producers and Young Frankenstein.) So it’s just great to see Mel looking so good at 96, and still having fun.

    After waiting over 40 years there is finally a sequel to the seminal Mel Brooks film, “History of the World, Part I,” with each episode featuring a variety of sketches that take us through different periods of human history.

    History of the World, Part II premieres with two episodes on Hulu on March 6. Two more episodes follow each day until the finale on March 9.

    Justin Roiland, the co-creator of Rick And Morty and the voice of both title characters, faces some pretty troubling domestic violence charges. While not all the details of the case are public just yet, the charges stem from an incident that took place back in 2020, between Roiland and an unknown party who was dating Roiland at the time.

    The charges consist of two felonies. There’s one count of domestic battery with corporeal injury, while the other is false imprisonment by fraud, menace, violence, and/or deceit. In October 2020, Roiland pleaded not guilty to both charges. He was subsequently released on a bond of $50,000. There have been upwards of ten hearings regarding the case so far, but an official trial has yet to materialize. As of now, there’s no official date yet either.

    According to NBC News, a protective order was also filed against Roiland in 2020, which included a number of rules that Roiland must obey. These include one that’s meant to prevent Roiland from harassing, threatening, or surveilling the other party. Another is that Roiland can’t physically come within 100 feet of the other party. Roiland also had to hand in any firearms he may have owned to the court.

    Roiland’s attorney, T. Edward Welbourn has commented on the case. “We look forward to clearing Justin’s name and helping him move forward as swiftly as possible … It is hard to overstate how inaccurate the recent media coverage of this situation has been. To be clear, not only is Justin innocent but we also have every expectation that this matter is on course to be dismissed once the district attorney’s office has completed its methodical review of the evidence. We look forward to clearing Justin’s name and helping him move forward as swiftly as possible.”

    If all the overwhelmingly positive reviews of HBO’s new The Last Of Us TV series has you considering getting a subscription to HBO Max, take note: As of today, the price of a monthly subscription is going up.

    Starting on January 12, the cost of HBO Max for the ad-free tier is now $15.99. That’s a $1 increase from the previous (and original) subscription price of $14.99 a month. According to a press release “existing subscribers who are currently paying $14.99/month will see their monthly rate increase to $15.99 effective their next billing cycle on or after Saturday, February 11, 2023.”

    The same press release claims “this price increase of one dollar will allow us to continue to invest in providing even more culture-defining programming and improving our customer experience for all users.” They also note that this is the first time HBO has raised its price since the service first launched in the spring of 2020.

    With this price increase, HBO Max is now more expensive than the Standard Netflix subscription, which costs $15.49 a month. (Netflix also offers a Basic plan for $9.99 a month, and a Basic With Ads subscription for $6.99 a month; Netflix’s Premium membership costs $19.99 a month.) Disney+ is currently $7.99 a month with ads or $10.99 a month for an ad-free version. (You can also pay $79.99 for a full year of Disney’s streaming service.) HBO Max also still offers an ad-supported tier at $9.99 a month.

    Every since Warner Bros. and Discovery merged, the combined company has been looking for ways to cut costs. That includes some layoffs, and the cancelations of some previously planned productions, like DC’s Batgirl movie that was intended for HBO Max. The movie was shot and then shelved and will likely never see the light of day. But HBO Max does still have a lot of new and upcoming programming, including The Last Of Us, which debuts this weekend. Which certainly makes the timing of this news interesting.

    In its eight season run on HBO, Game of Thrones won 0 Golden Globes for Best TV Series, Drama.

    House of the Dragon has already topped it.

    This year’s Golden Globe for Best TV Series, Drama, went to House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones prequel that recently concluded its first season on HBO and HBO Max. The show was a ratings smash, critically acclaimed, and now it is a Golden Globe winner. The series beat out fellow nominees Better Call Saul (AMC), The Crown (Netflix), Ozark (Netflix), and Severance (Apple TV+).

    House of the Dragon was only nominated for one other Golden Globe this year; Emma D’Arcy was nominated for Best Actress in a TV Series, Drama, but lost to Zendaya from Euphoria. The other big winner of the night at the Globes on the TV side of things was Abbott Elementary, which won Best TV Series, Musical or Comedy, plus Best Actress in a Musical TV Series (Or a Comedy) for Quinta Brunson, as well as Best Supporting Actor in a TV series Musical (or a Comedy) for Tyler James Williams.

    Game of Thrones was nominated for Best TV Series at the Globes on five different occasions, but lost each and every time. But the show did earn some accolades, including a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for Peter Dinklage. And of course the show won a total of 59 Emmy Awards over the course of its eight-year run on cable. So it did just fine without a Best TV Series Drama Golden Globe, thank you very much.

    House of the Dragon Season 1 is still available on HBO Max. The second season is currently in development.

    Wednesday will return.

    This should not be a huge surprise. The new version of The Addams Family became the second-biggest original series in Netflix history behind only Stranger Things Season 4. (Subscribers watched 1.237 billion hours of Wednesday in its first month of availability.) But now it is official: Wednesday has been renewed for a second season on Netflix.

    Here were series creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar’ comment on the announcement:

    It’s been incredible to create a show that has connected with people across the world … [we’re ] thrilled to continue Wednesday’s tortuous journey into season two. We can’t wait to dive head first into another season and explore the kooky spooky world of Nevermore. Just need to make sure Wednesday hasn’t emptied the pool first.

    The series’ innovation was to put a teen drama twist on the classic story of the Addams Family, the creepy and kooky characters first introduced by cartoonist Charles Addams in The New Yorker magazine. The series followed Jenny Ortega’s Wednesday as she is kicked out of school for, well, being Wednesday, and then attends her mother’s alma mater, Nevermore Academy. There she winds up getting involved in a murder mystery — and learning that she also has psychic powers to boot.

    In addition to its massive viewership numbers around the world, Wednesday became a viral sensation online thanks to fans recreating its big dance sequence on TikTok. The YouTube clip of the big scene has been watched 33 million times on Netflix alone.

    If you aren’t one of the folks who watched 1.2 billion hours of Wednesday last fall, the first season is still available on Netflix.

    How long will The Last of Us run? The PlayStation game series it is based on has only two installments, along with some additional material from DLC. Theoretically, a TV show version could spend several seasons adapting just one of the games before moving on to the sequel — or it could take the games as a jumping off point to tell a totally different (and perhaps open-ended) story in a world ruined by a zombie plague.

    But that’s not the plan for HBO’s The Last of Us, according to its writers. Series co-creator and writer Craig Mazin told Collider that the first season that is set to debut on HBO and HBO Max later this month adapts the events of the first game The Last of Us. Should the show prove popular enough to merit additional seasons, they would cover the story from The Last of Us Part II.

    That game is expansive enough that the TV version could potentially demand more than a single season to adapt it all. And after that … that would probably be it. Mazin said the show is designed to be “finite” and won’t launch an ongoing tale of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) wandering through a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

    Essentially, according to Mazin, they are making a TV show of the games. And once they tell that story, the show will end. As he put it:

    …the story that remains [after Season 1], that continues forth in the work that Naughty Dog’s done on the second game, is a lot. Probably the amount of remaining story would take us more than a season to tell. But definitely, I don’t see this as something that runs on and on and on. We don’t have that ambition. Our ambition is to tell the story that exists, as best as we can, in a different medium.

    Mazin noted that this was how the series was originally pitched to HBO; as a show of the games that would take as many episodes as needed to adapt The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II, and that’s it. “Our approach for future seasons [would be] to say, ‘Okay, this will be as many seasons as required to reach that ending, and no more,’” he added.

    It sounds like you should prepare yourself for a very faithful version of the games. But if you wanted to see a show about the world beyond the games … that doesn’t seem to be in the cards. The Last Of Us premieres on HBO and HBO Max on January 15.

    Will’s sexuality has long been a topic of speculation amongst Stranger Things fans. Since almost the very beginning of the show, they wondered if WIll is gay, and harbored secret unrequited feelings for his best friend Mike.

    Last summer, the actor who plays Will, Noah Schnapp, confirmed in an interview that Will was in fact gay, saying at the time: “Obviously, it was hinted at in Season 1: It was always kind of there, but you never really knew, is it just him growing up slower than his friends? Now that he’s gotten older, they made it a very real, obvious thing. Now it’s 100% clear that he is gay and he does love Mike. But before, it was a slow arc. I think it is done so beautifully, because it’s so easy to make a character just like all of a sudden be gay.”

    Now the 18-year-old Schnapp himself has come out as gay, in a video he posted to his TikTok account. In the video (which you can watch below) Schnapp lip syncs to audio that says “You know what it never was? That serious. Quite frankly, it will never be that serious.” The text superimposed on the video reads “When I finally told my friends and family I was gay after being scared in the closet for 18 years and all they said was ‘we know.”

    The caption at the bottom of the video reads “I guess I’m more similar to will than I thought.”

    Stranger Things upcoming fifth season will be the final one for the show. Although the series’ creators have confirmed they are already at work writing it, there have been no definitive announcements when production might begin, or when it will premiere on Netflix.

    Just a couple weeks removed from Glass Onion’s big debut on Netflix, Rian Johnson already has a whole new mystery TV series on a rival streaming series. Peacock’s Poker Face, which Johnson wrote, directed, and created, follows Charlie Cale, played by Natasha Lyonne, who has a unique ability that helps her solve mysteries: She instinctively knows any time someone is lying. It’s kinda like the flip side of Ana de Armas’ character in Knives Out, who was physically incapable of telling a lie.

    Inspired by classic TV shows about unlikely detectives solving weekly mysteries, the show follows Charlie as she stumbles into one case after another. Given that Glass Onion is already one of Netflix’s most-watched movies in history after about two weeks of release, the show should be a big hit. The lengthy cast of guest stars include Adrien Brody, Benjamin Bratt, Cherry Jones, Ellen Barkin, Hong Chau, Jameela Jamil, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Judith Light, Rhea Perlman, Ron Perlman, Rowan Blanchard, S. Epatha Merkerson, Tim Blake Nelson and Tim Meadows.

    For years, DC Comics’ TV shows were collectively known as the Arrowverse, thanks to the fact that they all slowly spun out of The CW’s Arrow. And for a while, it was a fitting moniker, as there was a whole slew of DC shows all on the air (and occasionally intersecting) including The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman, and Black Lightning. But Arrow — starring Stephen Amell as DC hero Green Arrow — ended in 2020, and right now there is just one Arrowverse series left, The Flash. And it’s scheduled to end with its upcoming ninth season.

    But the show, and the Arrowverse in general will at least go out with a little style — and the return of its title character one last time, with the news that Amell will reappear as Oliver Queen in The Flash’s final season.

And thanks to the multiverse, you never know when one or more of these Arrowverse characters might show up in the future.

    The Flash Season 9 premieres on The CW on February 8. Amell will appear in Episode 9 of the season.

    After a scary accident involving a snow plow over the New Year’s holiday, Jeremy Renner is now at least well enough to share a photo of himself from his hospital bed.

    Renner was initially hospitalized in “critical but stable” condition after an incident involving a snow plow. On Tuesday, Renner shared a photo, with some definite bruises on his face and an oxygen tube in his nose, along with the caption “Thank you all for your kind words. Im too messed up now to type. But I send love to you all.”

    Among those who left encouraging messages on the photo were the Russo brothers, who directed Renner as the Marvel hero Hawkeye in Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame. “Sending all of our love, brother, and hopes for a speedy recovery,” they wrote.

    The Sheriff’s Office of Washoe County in Nevada held a press conference earlier Tuesday and revealed the first specifics of the incident. According to their investigation, they now believe Renner was the victim of a “tragic accident” and was not impaired “at all” at the time he was injured. Several feet of snow had fallen in the area over the weekend, and Renner attempted to use his Sno-Cat to free a family member driving a vehicle that had gotten stuck near his home. Renner successfully freed the vehicle from the snow, but after he exited his plow, it began to roll on its own— and when Renner attempted to get back into it the plow he was “run over” by it.

    Renner remains in intensive care in the hospital where he is still listed in critical but stable condition.

    Marvel star Jeremy Renner, known as Hawkeye in multiple movies and shows in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was seriously injured over the New Year’s Eve holiday weekend while he was plowing snow.

    According to Renner’s representative:

    We can confirm Jeremy is in critical but stable condition with injuries suffered after experiencing a weather related accident while plowing snow earlier today. His family is with him and he is receiving excellent care.

    Renner owns a home in Nevada and while there is no confirmation yet regarding the specific nature and location of the accident, the county where his home is located received a large amount of snow over the weekend, leaving thousands of people without power.

    Renner is best known as one of the original six Avengers from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He first appeared as the arrow-shooting Hawkeye in a cameo role in 2011’s Thor. In addition to the four Avengers films, Renner has also appeared as Hawkeye in Captain America: Civil War, and the Hawkeye and What If…? TV series on Disney+.

    He has been nominated for two Academy Awards: For his 2009 breakthrough role in The Hurt Locker, and in 2011’s heist film The Town. His other notable movies include Arrival, Wind River, Tag, The Bourne Legacy, and multiple appearances in the Mission: Impossible franchise as Agent William Brandt. His latest work is back on television, starring in the Paramount+ television series Mayor of Kingstown, which was co-created by Wind River director Taylor Sheridan.
