    Season 3 of The Mandalorian opens with a ritual, as a foundling is given his all-important helmet and armor for the first time. It looks like this may be a flashback to how the show’s title character, Din Djarin, got his armor — until the adult Din and (baby) Grogu show up to save the assembled Mandalorians from a rampaging space alligator creature. But there is a lot of symbolism in this scene you might have missed, from the images of forging armor suggesting the way The Mandalorian series is forging a new Star Wars mythology, to the way the interruption of the helmet ceremony points to the conflict surrounding Din and his own helmet in this season of the show.

    Success in Star Wars comes with complications. When you introduce characters as popular and momentous as the Mandalorian and his sidekick Grogu in time periods before movies and events that have already been made, people want to know: What happened to these characters? In other words: Why didn’t Mando show up to help the Resistance in the Star Wars sequels? If Grogu is basically a major Jedi-in-the-making, how come he didn’t try to stop Palpatine from somehow returning?

    The creators of The Mandalorian are thinking about these things too. The Mandalorian writer/director/producer Dave Filoni told The Hollywood Reporter that he and the rest of the show’s creative team “talk about many different things” about what happens to Mando and Grogu after the eventual end of the Disney+ series to explain their absence from films like The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker.

    While Filoni wouldn’t give a concrete answer to where Grogu was, he did say this…

    As a kid, when Yoda said, “When gone am I, the last of the Jedi will you be,” to Luke, I took that very literally. Well, now we know that’s anything but true. There are many different people that could wield the force, and maybe Luke is the last Jedi as far as what Yoda would consider a Jedi. So we’ll just have to wait and see how the story evolves and what makes sense. But in my experience, there’s definitely a way to weave everything together and make it exciting. It’s possible it would never even have to cross over with what we saw [in the sequel trilogy] if the story has us somewhere else.

    They’re going to have to explain this some day. Because there is no way in the world that Star Wars fandom will ever accept the explanation of Grogu’s absence from those movies as “Oh, well eventually Moff Gideon killed him.” Baby Yoda can never die. So this will need to be explained definitively at some point.

    ‘The Mandalorian’: What Is An Apostate?

    Each episode of The Mandalorian is treated as a chapter of a larger story, and given a title with the same format: “The _______.” The pilot was simply “The Mandalorian,” and since then we’ve had installments like “The Child,” “The Sin,” “The Gunslinger,” “The Marshal,” “The Jedi,” “The Tragedy,” and “The Rescue.” (The only episode so far to violate that rubric was Season 1’s “Chapter 4: Sanctuary.”)

    The Season 3 premiere is the 17th chapter of the story so far. It’s dubbed “The Apostate,” a word that’s a little more obscure than child or sin or gunslinger or even Jedi. But it cuts to the heart of what’s happened to Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin and his central quest on this season of the Star Wars TV series.

    An apostate is a person who commits apostasy, defined by Merriam-Webster as “an act of refusing to continue to follow, obey, or recognize a religious faith” or “abandonment of a previous loyalty.” That’s because at the end of Season 2 of The Mandalorian, Din Djarin willingly removed his helmet to his Yoda-esque charge, Grogu. In Din’s specific sect of Mandalorians, the Children of the Watch, that is the ultimate no-no. Their sect’s “creed” forbids removing one’s helmet under any circumstance. In the case of Din, he didn’t even do it to save his life, or to protect a loved one. He did it because he was saying goodbye to Grogu forever and the little guy wanted to see his face just one time.

    (Obviously forever didn’t even last the break between Mandalorian seasons; the pair were reunited during the events of the spinoff series The Book of Boba Fett.)

    If we’re being technical about it, Mando has actually removed his helmet several times over the course of The Mandalorian’s two seasons.

    When word of the removal of Din’s helmet got back to the leaders of his Mandalorian sect — primarily the woman known as “The Armorer” (Emily Swallow) — they branded him an “apostate” because he has violated their sacred creed. That means he’s no longer a member of the Children of the Watch. The only way back in to the group at this point is by redeeming himself, which, according to the creed, can only be accomplished through a bath in the living waters of the planet’s mines. But Mandalore was destroyed a long time ago, meaning adhering to this tradition might be impossible. (Look, if it was easy, that wouldn’t make much of a TV show, now would it?)

    That’s the central conflict of The Mandalorian Season 3. Din is now an apostate to his people until he performs a sacred ritual in a body of holy water that may not technically exist anymore. Good luck, dude.

    New episodes of The Mandalorian premiere on Wednesdays on Disney+. Favreau co-wrote the entire season with producer Dave Filoni and writer Noah Kloor. There are seven weekly episodes left in Season 3.

    You can’t always get what you want. It seems like Ted Lasso is about to learn that.

    The new trailer for Season 3 of the hit Apple TV+ streaming service contains almost no dialogue at all — and instead features scenes set to the Rolling Stones classic “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” It’s been a little while since we’ve seen Ted (Jason Sudeikis) and the crew from AFC Richmond, so it might be a bit jarring to watch the trailer and see, for example, that Ted’s old pal Nate (Nick Mohammed) has fully gone to the Dark Side (he’s even dressing all in black) and is coaching Richmond’s big rivals West Ham United. Can Ted rally his team once again?

    I mean, probably. It’s Ted Lasso, things tend to work out okay; that’s part of the show’s appeal. Check out the trailer below:

    In the third season of Ted Lasso, the newly-promoted AFC Richmond faces ridicule as media predictions widely peg them to finish last in the Premier League and Nate (Nick Mohammed), now hailed as the “wonder kid,” has gone to work for Rupert (Anthony Head) at West Ham United. In the wake of Nate’s contentious departure from Richmond, Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) steps up as assistant coach, alongside Beard (Brendan Hunt). Meanwhile, while Ted (Jason Sudeikis) deals with pressures at work, he continues to wrestle with his own personal issues back home, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) is focused on defeating Rupert and Keeley (Juno Temple) navigates being the boss of her own PR agency. Things seem to be falling apart both on and off the pitch, but Team Lasso is set to give it their best shot anyway.

    Ted Lasso premieres on Apple TV+ on March 15.

    In the Hawkeye Disney+ series, Clint Barton and his family go to see a musical centered around the Avengers. Now tourists will get to experience what it’s like to see a weirdly uncomfortable Broadway show based on a Marvel concept when Rogers: The Musical is turned into a real stage show at  Disneyland’s California Adventure Park later this year.

    In Hawkeye, Rogers: The Musical is just a short gag so Barton can make fun of the inaccuracies, but the production basically mounted a lengthy excerpt from the show, with music by real Broadway composers, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. If you managed to stick around through the credits of the last episode of Hawkeye without hopping into your next binge, you’re treated to a full-length version of the track.

    Shaiman talked about the possibilities you have in an Avengers musical back in 2021, explaining that there are plenty of avenues for the story to take.

    There are a million things that you could create in a Marvel musical, especially with Steve Rogers. The fact that he exists in the ’40s as well would allow us to write a whole lot of different genres, so the whole Marvel story would take place over decades. It would be a thrill to get to do that.

     

    The official Disney Parks Twitter page has released a short teaser, which implies that the musical will be “Coming Soon.” The musical will be hitting Disney California Adventure Park as a one-act play sometime this summer.

    The fact that Peggy Carter is the one looking at the playbill for Rogers: The Musical seems to suggest that she will appear in the show as well. (The Hawkeye version was basically just the one sequence inspired by The Avengers, so they’re going to have to write a bunch more material, even for a one-act show.

    When we watch a TV show we love, it’s normal to feel emotionally invested in the characters. When something major happens to them — they find love, they experience loss, they have a moment of growth — we’re experiencing that with them. That’s why it’s such a big deal when a TV character dies. Even though we know that it’s just an actor playing a part on the screen, it’s still possible to feel totally devastated.

    Of course, in the world of television, things are not always what they seem. Sometimes, a character is only presumed dead, but they’re actually still alive. Unless a character actually has a proper sendoff on camera — where you, as the viewer, can actually confirm they are dead — there’s always a chance that they’ll come back. Depending on the show, this can either be a wild, exciting plot twist, or a completely unrealistic turn of events.

    It’s pretty obvious to tell when a character has been (temporarily) killed off for shock value. In some cases, a series just needs a good ratings boost — and nothing drives viewers to the screen like the potential of a fan-favorite character biting the dust. But if the character who dies also happens to be the show’s namesake — for example, Buffy from Buffy the Vampire Slayer — you really shouldn’t be surprised when they return unscathed.

    The drama around the upcoming season of Succession just got even more intense — with the announcement that Season 4, which premieres in about a month on HBO and HBO Max, will be the final one for the acclaimed series.

    That’s according to creator Jesse Armstrong, Succession’s creator and showrunner. He told The New Yorker in a new piece about the series, that this upcoming run of episodes will be the show’s last.

    “The end,” he said, “has always been kind of present in my mind. From season two, I’ve been trying to think: Is it the next one, or the one after that, or is it the one after that?”

    He added:

    I got together with a few of my fellow-writers before we started the writing of season four, in about November, December, 2021, and I sort of said, ‘Look, I think this maybe should be it. But what do you think?’ And we played out various scenarios: We could do a couple of short seasons, or two more seasons. Or we could go on for ages and turn the show into something rather different, and be a more rangy, freewheeling kind of fun show, where there would be good weeks and bad weeks. Or we could do something a bit more muscular and complete, and go out sort of strong. And that was definitely always my preference.

    Some fans might have preferred the “rangy, freewheeling kind of fun show” if it meant more seasons of the Roy family and their endless infighting. But probably most would agree that “freewheeling” is not really what Succession is about. At some point, there’s got to be an actual succession. It sounds like it’s going to happen a lot sooner than some in the audience expected.

    The fourth — and final — season of Succession premieres on HBO on Sunday, March 26.

    Star Trek: Picard‘s third and final season featured an extremely surprising twist, and showrunner Terry Matalas had a few things to say about it.

    It just so happens to turn out that… wait for it… Picard has a son. Jack Crusher, the son of Dr. Beverly Crusher, the doctor on the good old Enterprise on Star Trek: The Next Generation, is also Picard’s son as well. Matalas points to the fact that Beverly Crusher and Picard always seemed very much like their relationship should have been explored further in earlier iterations of the show.

    Matalas sat down with Entertainment Weekly to really dive into why the twist just makes sense. As he put it:

    I felt like this had to be not only a passing the torch to the next generation, but a look-back at the last generation and an introspective look at what they viewed as the sins of their pasts. As the season goes on and you see what it’s all about, there are great regrets for all of them, but also a celebration of their triumphs that these are things that they could only overcome by coming together as this family. Showing that to a new generation, that just seems obvious. That should be the story.

    He also went on to explain how nice it was to finally see this plot point play out.

    It always felt like ‘will they, won’t they?’’It feels like, ‘Why didn’t they for decades?’ he said. ‘It felt like it should have gone there in a feature film. Now that you’re here at the end, wouldn’t it be great to see, ‘Oh, they went there alright.’ And now we get to see the fallout of that and a kind of coming together.
