Melissa Joan Hart Reveals Premise of Failed ‘Clarissa’ Revival

    [ad_1]

Way, way back in 2018, we heard that Nickelodeon was pursuing a reboot of its classic kids sitcom Clarissa Explains It All, which and launched Melissa Joan Hart to teen stardom. (This was before Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. There’s a post in the ScreenCrush archives from March of that year, stating that original Clarissa creator Mitchell Kriegman and Hart were both in talks for a show about “Hart’s Clarissa Darling as the family’s mother.”

But nothing ever came of it, even though Nickelodeon and its parent company, Paramount, have become increasingly obsessed with its vintage Nick catalog because of its streaming platform, Paramount+. The project seems to be dead, to the point that Hart revealed the premise of the failed revival in a recent interview.

Hart told Insider that show would have been about an adult Clarissa who “is divorced and moving to California with her two kids and living on the beach in California with her aunt.” She also added “I don’t know. It wasn’t my favorite way in.”

The original Clarissa produced 65 episodes from 1991 to 1994, and was one of the channel’s signature live-action series of its time, notable for Hart’s fourth-wall breaking performance — a sort of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off from a female perspective.

Hart also said in the interview, despite the issues with that 2018 attempt, she would prefer to revive Clarissa to her other nostalgic kidcom classic, Sabrina the Teenage Witch. “I do feel like Sabrina wrapped up really nicely with her riding off on the motorcycle with Harvey. I think that ending on Sabrina was so iconic that I don’t want to go back and try to recreate that and have another good ending.”

  • ‘Willow’ Showrunner Says It’s Not Canceled After All

‘Willow’ Showrunner Says It’s Not Canceled After All

    [ad_1]

Willow has always kind of been a dark horse of the Lucasfilm world. But reports of its Disney+ series cancellation may have been premature.

Its showrunner, Jonathan Kasdan, recently tweeted in reference to a headline from Deadline, which reported that the show would not return for a second season on the streaming service. Instead, he clarifies a few things. The show isn’t altogether canceled… it’s more on an extended hiatus. When the production of any series or film hits a lull and actors are locked into contracts, they really have no reliable way to make income. When Disney+ shifted gears, they decided to release the show’s cast from their contracts. Hence the reports that the show was over, and now Kasdan’s insistence that it will return, eventually.

You can read Kasdan’s lengthy letter to fans about the status of Willow below:

READ MORE: Everything Coming to Disney+ in April

The whole thing is indicative of a bigger problem with streaming. All of the impetus for crafting new original stories on streaming services comes from pulling in new subscribers. If your show isn’t doing that, you’re not really getting any value out of it. If people aren’t signing up for your streaming service because of a new show on the level of something like Stranger Things, you’re wasting potential.

This is also why shows at Netflix rarely make it past the first season, even if critics fall in love with them. It’s just statistically unlikely that people are creating accounts just to watch the second season of something. Of course, retaining subscribers is also important, but how many times have you forgotten to cancel a subscription?

Critics and fans both generally liked Willow, and it was great to see an old classic dusted off. While the original film didn’t really do as well at the box office as expected, it has become an enduring piece of high fantasy. Until Disney is convinced that people will tune in again, it’s unlikely that we’ll see Willow return.

Murder Suspect Joked About His Marriage On ‘Family Feud’

    [ad_1]

Timothy W. Bliefnick is under investigation for the murder of his wife. In a very strange twist, Bliefnick had joked about his marriage a few years ago during an appearance on Family Feud.

Timothy Bliefnick is facing two counts of first-degree murder and one count of home invasion. When Bliefnick appeared on Family Feud, he was asked a survey question about the biggest mistake he made at his wedding. His response: “Honey, I love you, but… said ‘I do.”

The audience gasped, before he amended his response by saying: “Not my mistake! I love my wife. I’m going to get in trouble for that, aren’t I?”

Bliefnick’s attorneys have categorically denied all the charges against him, and plan on entering a plea of not guilty and added “The state’s attorney’s office appears to be coming out with a narrative that this was an act of domestic violence. And the fact of the matter is, there was no domestic violence that we are aware of. Tim does not have a criminal history … there was tremendous pressure from the community for an arrest to be made. And naturally the estranged spouse is going to be the number one suspect regardless of the other circumstances.”

The victim, Rebecca Bliefnick, was an award-winning nurse, and a GoFundMe is set up in her name as a scholarship, and to help out her surviving children. The couple was separated at the time of Rebecca’s death. Here is an Inside Edition segment with more on the case.

  • Netflix Announces New John Mulaney Special

Netflix Announces New John Mulaney Special

    [ad_1]

John Mulaney is a busy man. But he’s not so busy that he can’t still put out standup specials from time to time. His latest, Baby J, is officially coming to Netflix next month.

Mulaney is perhaps best known for his standup, but he works all over the industry. So far, he’s released The Top Part, New in Town, The Comeback Kid, and Kid Gorgeous. (The last two were both also released by Netflix.) He’s been nominated for multiple Emmys, and his variety show John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous at Radio City won Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special.

His comedy usually centers around mundane situations that grow increasingly absurd, usually resulting in embarrassment or disgust, lampooning social mores. He also has an undeniably infectious theater-kid energy and flamboyance that really adds to his performances. Outside of his standup, he’s written for tons of notable shows, like Saturday Night Live and Fred Armisen and Bill Hader’s Documentary Now!

READ MORE: 10 Random Movies That Are Inexplicable Hits on Netflix

Mulaney has also done voice work, most notably on Big Mouth, a show created by his long-time comedy partner, Nick Kroll. He met Kroll while working as an office assistant at Comedy Central back in 2004, and the relationship flourished. Mulaney auditioned for SNL in 2008, after being discovered on Late Night With Conan O’Brien. He was up against some stiff competition, including Nick Kroll, Donald Glover, Ellie Kemper, T.J. Miller, and Bobby Moynihan, but managed to get onto the late-night series’ writing team, where he stayed for four seasons. His career since then has included tons of supporting roles on TV, stand-up, and even an ill-fated sitcom pilot.

Once again, Baby J, Mulaney’s new standup special, will premiere on Netflix on April 25.

‘Blade Runner’ TV Show Moves Forward at Amazon

    [ad_1]

The future’s so bleak, I gotta wear shades and assorted other moody noir clothes.

It’s time to return once again to the neon-lit, ultra-depressing future of Blade Runner, this time as a TV show on Amazon. Long in development, the series — titled Blade Runner 2099 — will continue the saga of this doomed future of humans and replicants about 50 years after the most recent film, 2018’s Blade Runner 2049.

Executive producer (and Blade Runner director) Ridley Scott and an entire creative team that includes showrunner Silka Luisa have been developing the series for a while, but now comes word that Jeremy Podeswa has come aboard the project as a director. Podeswa is a prolific TV director, whose past projects include DexterBoardwalk EmpireAmerican Horror StoryThe Walking Dead, and six episodes of Game of Thrones. He recently directed three episodes of the critically acclaimed show Station Eleven.

READ MORE: The 12 Worst Continuity Errors in Popular Movies

This is not Blade Runner’s first foray into television. A few years ago, Adult Swim aired Blade Runner: Black Lotus, a 13-episode animated series set in the Blade Runner universe, but following new characters. Scott first teased the existence of this live-action Blade Runner TV project in 2021.

The original Blade Runner followed a detective character played by Harrison Ford as he tracked down rogue “replicants,” artificial beings who were essentially treated as slaves. It was a mystery mixed with science-fiction, filled with weighty themes about the nature of existence. Ridley Scott’s preferred cut of the movie even made it unclear whether Ford’s character was himself one of the replicants he was hired to hunt down.

There’s still no word on a release date for the Blade Runner series, or any casting announcements.

‘The Last of Us’ Drew More Viewers Than ‘House of the Dragon’

    [ad_1]

The season finale of The Last of Us drew huge numbers of viewers (according to a press release from HBO), despite heavy competition from the 95th Academy Awards. The ninth episode of the hit video game adaptation was watched by “8.2 million viewers across HBO Max and linear telecasts, based on Nielsen and first party data.”

That’s close to double the 4.7 million viewers who watched the show’s premiere back in January. And The Last of Us consistently grew its audience almost every single week between the premiere and the finale. Here are the viewers who tuned in from week to week:

    • Episode 1 – 4.7 million viewers
    • Episode 2 – 5.7 million
    • Episode 3 – 6.4 million
    • Episode 4 – 7.5 million
    • Episode 5 -11.6 million (data across the entire weekend after Friday premiere)
    • Episode 6 – 7.8 million
    • Episode 7 – 7.7 million
    • Episode 8 – 8.1 million
    • Episode 9 – 8.2 million

READ MORE: The Last of Us: Why Joel Was Wrong

The series “is now averaging 30.4 million viewers across its first six episodes, with the first episode approaching 40 million viewers in the U.S.” That’s particularly impressive because it actually beats the numbers put up by HBO’s recent Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, which averaged 29 million viewers per episode. (HBO claims that Season 7 of Game of Thrones averaged 32.8 million viewers.) So it’s not shocking that The Last of Us has already been renewed for a second season.

The big question is: Will HBO allow the show to end once the series adapts the events of The Last of Us Part II. There’s no Part III game, at least not at present. The show’s creators have already said they plan to turn the games into television and then end the show. But these are big numbers. HBO will surely want the series to continue for a while.

The full season of The Last of Us is now available to stream on HBO Max, along with a making-of documentary about the show.

  • ‘The Last Of Us’ Creators on Why They Never Considered Changing the Ending

‘The Last Of Us’ Creators on Why They Never Considered Changing the Ending

    [ad_1]

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for The Last of Us season finale.

Although Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have changed a few things here and there, the ending of The Last Of Us has never been up for debate. While it‘s a bit tragic and calls Joel’s morality into question, the ending is absolutely integral to the themes of the story being told. Strangely enough, original Last of Us game creator Neil Druckmann was open to changing the story’s ending if it fits the needs of the show, but fellow TV Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin didn’t even give it a second thought.

During a Last Of Us press conference, both of them spoke about the process of writing. Any deviations were pretty minor. As Mazin put it…

Neil was, I will say never, I honestly mean this, I don’t think he was ever the guy who said, ‘No, we have to do it the way it was in the game.’ I was that guy, because I’m a fan. And Neil, in the smartest, most generous and flexible way, was always open to the process of adaptation. He understood what adaptation meant … But, the ending, there was never a question. As a player, I got to the end, why would I ever want to change that? It’s awesome.

Hence, as in the game, Joel chooses to save Ellie at the cost of a potentially world-changing cure for the Cordyceps fungus. Since Ellie is naturally immune, the Fireflies were planning to extract this cure from Ellie. Unfortunately, the process would kill her. Joel just spent the whole course of the series learning to love Ellie as a daughter, and since he has nothing left without her, losing her would just be too much for him to bear.

‘The Last of Us’: Why Joel Was Wrong

    [ad_1]

The following post contains SPOILERS for The Last of Us. You guys already know all this stuff, though, right? The game is pretty old at this point.

At the start of the fungal pandemic in The Last of Us, Joel lost his daughter, and as a result, lost his humanity. Over the course of The Last of Us game and HBO show, we steadily watch Joel regain his humanity through his relationship with Ellie. But then once Joel reconnects with his emotions and becomes surrogate father to Ellie, he makes a shocking and morally ambiguous choice: He chooses to kill a slew of people and rescue Ellie from the Fireflies instead of letting him kill her, in order to use her brain to create a cure for the Cordyceps infection that has destroyed the world.

Now there plenty of reasons why you can argue why Joel was right to do this, including the fact that it’s not entirely clear that the Fireflies really can use Ellie’s brain to make a cure. But that doesn’t change the fact that, at least in our minds, Joel was wrong. And in our latest The Last of Us video, we lay out all the reasons for our argument. Check it out below:

‘The Last of Us’ Reveals Why Ellie Is Immune

    [ad_1]

The Last of Us season finale, “Look For the Light,” brought us the end of Joel and Ellie’s cross-country journey, Joel’s heartbreaking choice when faced with Ellie’s imminent death, and all the moral and ethical debates that come up with it. But it also showed us the beginning of this story, including elements of it that weren’t shown in The Last of Us games. Specifically, “Look For the Light”’s opening scenes revealing the birth of Ellie, and the circumstances around her one-of-a-kind immunity to the Cordyceps fungus.

The sequence shows Ellie’s mother, Anna (played by Ashley Johnson, the voice of Ellie in The Last of Us video games) running away from an infected zombie into a house in order to give birth. But the zombie follows her and attacks. Anna wards it off with a knife and delivers her baby — Ellie — but the zombie manages to bite Anna on the leg in the process. The implication seems to be that something about this very unusual birth and simultaneous zombie attack made Ellie immune to whatever in Cordyceps fungus turns everyone else it comes in contact with into a raging mushroom monster.

The “Inside the Episode” video from HBO all about The Last of Us finale takes us behind the scenes of that sequence, and reveals some of the decisions that went into it. Series co-creator Craig Mazin says that the audience “needs to understand why [Ellie] is immune, but [they] also need to understand how much she was loved” by her mother. That is all shown in that heartbreaking opening sequence from the episode. You can check out that making-of video below:

  • Robert Blake, Hollywood Star Tried For Wife’s Murder, Dies at 89

Robert Blake, Hollywood Star Tried For Wife’s Murder, Dies at 89

    [ad_1]

Robert Blake, a mainstay in Hollywood for decades who later became a source of even wider fascination when he was tried for the murder of his second wife, has died. According to the Associated Press “a statement released on behalf of his niece, Noreen Austin, said Blake died from heart disease, surrounded by family at home in Los Angeles.” Blake was 89 years old.

Born Michael James Gubitosi in 1933, Blake was a child actor who appeared in several Little Rascals shorts, and had a role in the classic Humphrey Bogart drama The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. After serving in the military, Blake returned to acting; as an adult, his onscreen breakthrough came in 1967’s In Cold Blood, the film adaptation of the classic Truman Capote book. Blake played murderer Perry Smith:

In the 1970s, Blake became a TV star as the title character on the cop show Baretta, which ran for four successful seasons on ABC. Blake won an Emmy for his work on the series.

Blake’s career slowed considerably in the 1980s and 1990s, although he did make an extremely memorable appearance — in what would be his final film role — as “The Mystery Man” of David Lynch’s Lost Highway.

In later years, though, Blake was far more well-known because in 2002 he was charged with the murder of his wife, Bonny Lee Bakley. The incident occurred in May of 2001; Bakley was shot in the head outside a restaurant. Blake said he was inside the restaurant at the time of the killing, coincidentally reclaiming a gun that he had accidentally left inside — a gun which police later examined and determined was not the weapon used in the murder. Blake was ultimately acquitted of the charges in 2005, and always insisted upon his innocence, but in a civil suit later that same year he was found liable for Bakley’s death and ordered him to pay $30 million to Bakley’s family. (As a result, Blake was forced to file for bankruptcy.)

In other words, Blake leaves behind a very complicated legacy — along with some very good movies. (If you’ve never seen the action drama Electra Glide in Blue or the buddy cop movie Busting with Blake starring opposite Elliott Gould, both are definitely worth checking out.)

  • ‘Arrowverse’ Co-Creator Says He ‘Wasted’ His Time on DC TV Shows

‘Arrowverse’ Co-Creator Says He ‘Wasted’ His Time on DC TV Shows

    [ad_1]

When the TV version of The Flash comes to an end after this season, it will cap off a period of over a decade where DC Comics’ TV output was largely contained within the so-called “Arrowverse,” which at its height included numerous interconnected TV series, not unlike the multiverses that are now commonplace among the big-screen Marvel and DC movies.

All the shows sprung out of Arrow, which was developed for TV by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Andrew Kreisberg. Guggenheim went on to also work on the Arrowverse spinoff Legends of Tomorrow, but now says that in the wake of the Arrowverse’s impending end and the launch of a new DC Universe headed by James Gunn and Peter Safran, he feels “at least on a career level — that I really wasted my time.”

That’s what he wrote in a recent Substack post, where he talks about the toll that working on the Arrowverse took on him, and particularly the multiple series’ adaptation of the iconic DC crossover book Crisis on Infinite Earths. Guggenheim wrote:

The project, a live action adaptation of a seminal comic book series that made a significant impression on my psyche, was more than a labor of love — it was a labor in every respect and a project where I spent every ounce of capitol I’d amassed in developing DC Comics-related shows for Warner Bros. over an eight-year period. I called in every favor. I used every chit. I burned every bridge. I even spent $10,000 of my own money.

READ MORE: How the DCEU Connects to the Arrowverse

Guggenheim, who also worked on the script for Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern movie, added that working for DC was “creatively fulfilling” but also “involved a lot of adversity, challenges, and personal sacrifices — none of which seem to have accrued to any professional benefit. Simply put, the Arrowverse hasn’t led to any other gigs, so it feels — at least on a career level — that I really wasted my time.”

He also noted that despite his experience he is not part of the new writer’s room Gunn had assembled to plan the DC Universe future, and he “would have liked to have gotten at least a meeting” with Gunn after all his work on the Arrowverse. (“Not a job, mind you. A meeting. A conversation.”)

Gunn hasn’t responded to Guggenheim’s blog post yet, but he might; he does sometimes address this sort of thing on Twitter. Guggenheim’s most recent project was the animated series Wizards: Tales of Arcadia for Netflix.

  • Russo Brothers’ Spy Series ‘Citadel’ Unveiled By Amazon

Russo Brothers’ Spy Series ‘Citadel’ Unveiled By Amazon

    [ad_1]

Prime Video has released a trailer for Citadel, an ambitious new spy series executive produced by the Russo brothers. Josh Appelbaum and Bryan Oh created the show. What makes Citadel so interesting is the format. To talk about that, we have to discuss the plot a bit.  Priyanka Chopra and Richard Madden play Nadia Sinh and Mason Cane, ex-agents belonging to an organization called Citadel.

The folks at Citadel were betrayed by one of their own, who started a rival organization called Manticore. Both agencies function outside of any world government, essentially existing as spies for hire. Nadia Sinh and Mason Cane have both forgotten large parts of their past until Cane’s memories begin to return to him. He quickly realizes who he used to be, and finds Sinh to unlock more of his past life.

The structure of the show’s plot itself allows for greater freedom of movement in regard to formatting. It means that the show can exist non-linearly, switching from Sinh and Crane’s past to their present day. They’re also taking it a step further. There are already adaptations in the works for Italian, Indian, and Mexican versions of Citadel. Each of these will be its own unique story with its own unique scenario, and they’ll work together to create a deep shared universe that can be enjoyed by everyone.

Watch the first trailer for the series below:

Here is the series’ official synopsis:

Eight years ago, Citadel fell. The independent global spy agency—tasked to uphold the safety and security of all people—was destroyed by operatives of Manticore, a powerful syndicate manipulating the world from the shadows. With Citadel’s fall, elite agents Mason Kane (Richard Madden) and Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) had their memories wiped as they narrowly escaped with their lives. They’ve remained hidden ever since, building new lives under new identities, unaware of their pasts. Until one night, when Mason is tracked down by his former Citadel colleague, Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci), who desperately needs his help to prevent Manticore from establishing a new world order. Mason seeks out his former partner, Nadia, and the two spies embark on a mission that takes them around the world in an effort to stop Manticore, all while contending with a relationship built on secrets, lies, and a dangerous-yet-undying love.

Citadel premieres on Prime Video on April 28.

  • Chris Rock Finally Addresses Will Smith Slap in Netflix Special

Chris Rock Finally Addresses Will Smith Slap in Netflix Special

    [ad_1]

Almost exactly one year after the infamous incident at the Academy Awards where Will Smith walked on stage and slapped Chris Rock in the face after Rock had made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, Rock finally talked publicly about the incident — at the end of his new (and, for the first time on Netflix, live) comedy special, Chris Rock: Selective Outrage.

After a special touching on topics ranging from politics to women to his daughter getting kicked out of her high school to, yes, selective outrage (which Rock accused Smith of practicing), Rock closed the show with an extended series of jokes aimed  at both Smith and Pinkett Smith and their relationship.

“You all know what happened to me, getting smacked by Shug Smith,” Rock joked. Everybody knows, everybody fucking knows. I got smacked like a year ago… People are like ‘Did it hurt?’ I still got ‘Summertime’ ringing in my ears.”

He also addressed the fact that while Smith slapped him, he did not attempt to strike Smith back, quipping “Will Smith is a big dude, I am not. Will Smith is shirtless in his movies. If you see me in a movie getting open heart surgery, I got on a sweater. Will Smith played Muhammad Ali, you think I auditioned for that? I played Pookie in New Jack City.

In the aftermath of the slapping incident, Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and then was banned from attending the Oscars for ten years. He did release a statement at that time calling his actions “shocking, painful, and inexcusable” then followed that several months later with a video apology. He also appeared on The Daily Show and discussed the incident there, saying the slap was “the little boy that watched his father beat up his mother, you know, is that you know, all of that just bubbled up in that moment. You know, I just that’s not who I wanna be.”

Rock, who insisted he is not a victim in the whole brouhaha, took a slightly different approach and tone in his special. He did note that he had “loved” Smith as a fan his whole life. He revealed that he saw Smith open for Run DMC decades ago and said that Smith “makes great movies.” Then, he added, “Now I watch Emancipation just so I could watch him get whooped.”

Rock’s new comedy special, Selective Outrage, is now available on Netflix.

Discovery premiered in September of 2017 as a flagship piece of original programming on CBS All Access, a streaming service that no longer even exists. (Paramount rebranded their streaming hub as Paramount+ in 2021.) Although it has remained the key piece in this current Trek TV landscape, and launched the popular spinoff Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, it has not always been a smooth journey for Discovery. Its original showrunner, Bryan Fuller, left over creative differences, and there have been numerous behind-the-scenes changes along the way. When the plug is finally pulled next year, the show will have produced 65 episodes, fewer even than the original Star Trek of the 1960s.

Star Trek seems to be headed into a transitional period in general. Another of the franchise’s big series, Star Trek: Picard, will end with the current season streaming now on Paramount+. And Paramount has spent years trying to develop various new Star Trek films with the movie cast headed by Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, with no luck to date.

“We are forever grateful to have been able to share such an amazing journey with you,” Kurtzman and Paradise also wrote. The final season of Star Trek: Discovery will premiere in 2024 on Paramount+.
