Nick Fury Begins His Final Fight in the ‘Secret Invasion’ Trailer

    [ad_1]

Are we on the verge of Nick Fury’s final appearance in the MCU?

The trailer for Secret Invasion definitely hints in that direction. At the end of the new teaser, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury gravely announces that he’s involved in “one last fight,” while a series of title cards declares “The end is closer … than we think.” Later, Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes calls Fury “the most wanted man on the planet.” But why?

Surely it has something to do with an invasion of the alien shapeshifting race known as the Skrulls. They were introduced to the MCU in Captain Marvel, where they were definitely a bit more benevolent than their usual appearances in Marvel Comics. In Secret Invasion, they seem much more in line with their print appearances, when they traditionally want to take over the Earth by infiltrating various groups and governments — and even sometimes masquerading as very famous superheroes. Take a look at the new trailer below:

Here is Secret Invasion’s official synopsis:

In Marvel Studios’ new series “Secret Invasion,” set in the present day MCU, Nick Fury learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls. Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross, Maria Hill and the Skrull Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity.

Secret Invasion is directed by Ali Selim and written by Kyle Bradstreet. The premieres on Disney+ on June 21 — seemingly as the next Marvel Cinematic Universe show on the streaming service, although that is not 100 percent confirmed at this point. We’re also waiting to hear when Loki Season 2 premieres.

  • Emilia Clarke’s ‘Secret Invasion’ Character Revealed

Emilia Clarke’s ‘Secret Invasion’ Character Revealed

    [ad_1]

Fans have had a lot of guesses about who former Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke would play in Marvel’s upcoming Secret Invasion TV series, and pretty much all of them were wrong.

No she’s not playing S.W.O.R.D. agent Abigail Brand. No, she’s not Dazzler, or

Clarke’s character’s identity was finally revealed in a new Vanity Fair article all about Secret Invasion. According to that piece, Clarke’s character is the daughter of Talos, the benevolent Skrull played by Ben Mendelsohn in Captain Marvel. (Mendelsohn reprises his role as Talos in Secret Invasion as well.)

Remember when Ben was there with his wife and daughter?” Secret Invasion star Samuel L. Jackson asked VF. “She’s the little Skrull girl grown up. She’s his daughter.”

READ MORE: The Weirdest Marvel Merchandise in History

The character’s name is G’iah, and Clarke had this to say about her:

She’s a refugee kid who’s had Talos for a dad, you know what I mean? Maybe the fact that we didn’t know he had a kid up until this point tells you everything you need to know about their relationship.

The same article also reveals that Olivia Colman will be playing “an MI6 agent…who’s ostensibly motivated to protect England’s national security interests during the crisis” but who serves “a more antagonistic presence” in the series. (How much you wanna bet she’s secret a Skrull?)

Secret Invasion still doesn’t have an official release date on Disney+, but it stands to reason if they’re putting out these sorts of in-depth pieces about its story and cast, it can’t be too far off at this point. (Some recent online reports claim the show will debut on June 21, but Disney has yet to confirm that.)

  • ‘Star Trek’ Announces ‘Starfleet Academy’ TV Series

‘Star Trek’ Announces ‘Starfleet Academy’ TV Series

    [ad_1]

With Star Trek at a bit of a crossroads — there’s no new movie on the horizon and several of the current TV series like Discovery and Picard are coming to an end imminently — the future of the franchise seems to be a youth movement.

The franchise announced today they’re turning to an idea that has been discussed as a concept for decades — and has been used in novels and comics, but never before in its own show. The next Star Trek series will be Starfleet Academy, and per the official description, it “will introduce us to a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they will discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.”

They also unveiled a piece of teaser artwork for the series:

READ MORE: We Ask an A.I. to Write Sequels to Beloved Movies

Co-showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau had this to say about the news:

Admission is now open to Starfleet Academy! Explore the galaxy! Captain your destiny! For the first time in over a century, our campus will be re-opened to admit individuals a minimum of 16 Earth years (or species equivalent) who dream of exceeding their physical, mental and spiritual limits, who value friendship, camaraderie, honor and devotion to a cause greater than themselves. The coursework will be rigorous, the instructors among the brightest lights in their respective fields, and those accepted will live and study side-by-side with the most diverse population of students ever admitted. Today we encourage all who share our dreams, goals and values to join a new generation of visionary cadets as they take their first steps toward creating a bright future for us all. Apply today! Ex Astris, Scientia!

Although Starfleet Academy as a concept has been around for decades, it’s only made sporadic onscreen appearances in the franchise. It was one of the key locations in the 2009 Star Trek reboot movie directed by J.J. Abrams, and it has been the home to series of novels and other side media. But despite numerous discussions of a Starfleet Academy series or movie, this will be the first show of its kind. It’s sort of an obvious idea, and it could potentially open up the franchise to a younger audience, which is always key in the longevity of these sorts of long-running sagas.

Production on Starfleet Academy will begin in 2024.

  • ‘Scott Pilgrim’ Anime Series Coming to Netflix With Movie Cast

‘Scott Pilgrim’ Anime Series Coming to Netflix With Movie Cast

    [ad_1]

The Scott Pilgrim movie, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, seemed like it should have launched a whole franchise of films (the comics certainly continued for multiple graphic novels). But the film was a cult hit at best, grossing about $47 million worldwide against a reported budget of some $60 million. And so the series basically stopped there.

But now a revival is coming to Netflix in the form of an anime series from Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O’Malley and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World director Edgar Wright. And much of the film version’s original cast will be on hand to voice their characters, including Michael Cera as Scott, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers, Chris Evans as Lucas Lee, Aubrey Plaza as Julie, Kieran Culkin as Wallace, Jason Schwartzman as Gideon Graves, Mae Whitman as Roxy, and Ellen Wong as Knives Chau.

O’Malley created Scott Pilgrim in 2004; all told he released six books about the Canadian slacker’s misadventures. O’Malley is the new anime series’ showrunner and writer/producer along with BenDavid Grabinski, who recently worked on Nickelodeon’s revival of Are You Afraid of the Dark? Wright himself is involved as executive producer; he gave this statement on the news of the show, via THR:

One of the proudest and most enjoyable achievements of my career was assembling and working with the dynamite cast of Scott Pilgrim. Since the film’s release in 2010 we’ve done Q&A’s, remembrances and charity read throughs, but there was never the occasion to reunite the whole gang on an actual project. Until now… Original creator Bryan Lee O’Malley, along with writer BenDavid Grabinski have conjured up an anime series of Scott Pilgrim that doesn’t just expand the universe, but also…well, just watch it. I’m more than happy to announce that I have helped coax the entire original cast back to voice their characters on this epic new adventure. You are in for a treat.

  • Netflix Renews ‘The Night Agent’ For Season 2

Netflix Renews ‘The Night Agent’ For Season 2

    [ad_1]

The biggest show on Netflix last week — by a huge margin, was The Night Agent, the new thriller from The Shield creator Shawn Ryan. Subscribers watched 168 million hours of the show in its first handful of days of release, making it the second most-watched Netflix premieres in 2023 after Ginny & Goergia: Season 2. To put that in perspective, Ginny & Georgia: Season 2 is now one of the ten most-watched shows in Netflix history.

So this news was probably inevitable: Netflix has now renewed The Night Agent for a second season. Here was series creator Shawn Ryan’s comment on the news:

“The last week has been a whirlwind as we’ve finally been able to share The Night Agent with the world. To see the tremendous reaction to the show has been a great joy and is a credit to our cast, our writers, our directors, our crew and our partners at Sony Pictures Television and Netflix. We couldn’t be any prouder or more excited to get cracking on Season 2 to share the further adventures of Night Action with our newfound fans.”

Based on the novel by Matthew Quirk, The Night Agent is a sophisticated, character-based, action-thriller centering on a low level FBI Agent who works in the basement of the White House, manning a phone that never rings — until the night that it does, propelling him into a fast moving and dangerous conspiracy that ultimately leads all the way to the Oval Office.

The full first season of The Night Agent is now streaming on Netflix.

  • ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3 Is a Like a Series of Backdoor Pilots for Other Shows

‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3 Is a Like a Series of Backdoor Pilots for Other Shows

    [ad_1]

This week’s The Mandalorian, “Chapter 21: The Pirate,” was the best episode of the season … of a show that does not exist.

“The Pirate”’s first act follows X-wing pilot Carson Teva (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) as he responds to a distress signal from Greef Karga (Carl Weathers), after his settlement on Nevarro comes under attack from space pirates. Teva finds the bureaucracy of the New Republic indifferent to his pleas for assistance, so he seeks out the Mandalorian, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), and informs him of Karga’s plight. The Mandalorian’s clan fights off the pirates and then claims land on Nevarro as their new home.

After the conflict is resolved, an additional scene shows Teva further investigating his suspicion that there is a growing underground threat to the New Republic that no one has noticed. Sure enough, he finds a derelict ship that should have transported the evil Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) to trial. Its crew slaughtered and its prisoner escaped, it never arrived at its destination.

    THE MANDALORIAN, Season 3
    Lucasfilm Ltd.

Again, as episodes of The Mandalorian Season 3 go, this was a solid one. It has an exciting battle for Nevarro on the streets and in the skies above the planet. I’m also a sucker for a good story about a lone hero who believes something bad is on the horizon but, gosh darn it, no one will listen to them. Plus, the epilogue scene, with Carson Teva investigating that Imperial shuttle, was more atmospheric and spooky than anything Star Wars has done lately.

But I just spent an entire paragraph praising the best parts of The Mandalorian and never once mentioned the Mandalorian himself. This week, he was mostly a bystander on his own show. He was certainly less important than Carson Teva and Karga, who drove much of the action. And he was also less essential to the story than Bo-Katan (Katee Sackoff), Mando’s ally who has taken an increasingly central role in plotting the destiny of Din’s Mandalorian clan.

Mando did give one rousing speech to his Mandalorian brethren, but the key dramatic moment in that sequence belonged to another member of the clan, Paz Vizsla, voiced by series creator Jon Favreau. And this week’s final scenes belonged to the Armorer (Emily Swallow), the leader of the Mandalorian clan who appears to have a mysterious master plan for Bo-Katan.

    THE MANDALORIAN, Season 3
    Lucasfilm Ltd.

READ MORE: Why Are Some Fans Struggling With The Mandalorian Season 3

With more than half of Season 3 now complete, The Mandalorian looks like a show that would rather be about anyone but the Mandalorian — which is especially bizarre since the previous Star Wars Disney+ show, The Book of Boba Fett, essentially stopped being about Boba Fett for an episode and a half so it could be about the Mandalorian. Now that Mando’s back on his own show, he keeps getting nudged out of the spotlight by his large supporting cast.

In hindsight, almost every Season 3 episode so far plays like a backdoor pilot for another potential Star Wars show: Bo-Katan’s quest to reclaim leadership of the Mandalorian people, the first seeds of the First Order growing within the New Republic, the Children of the Watch and their struggle to find a new home, Greef Karga’s attempts to maintain peace and prosperity on Nevarro, and now Carson Teva and his squad of Rangers patrolling the galaxy. At one point, Lucasfilm actually announce a series titled Rangers of the New Republic, but it never came to fruition, apparently because of the firing of its purported star, Gina Carano. Most of this week’s Mandalorian could have been a repurposed script from its unmade pilot.

    THE MANDALORIAN, Season 3
    Lucasfilm Ltd.

Broadening Din Djarin’s world isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But the more The Mandalorian’s focus widens, the more passive its hero becomes. Din did urge the rest of the Children of the Watch to help Greef Karga this week; otherwise, he has mostly seemed content to follow the Armorer and hang out with Grogu. His character has no forward momentum, no goal he’s striving for, nothing he’s seeking to earn or do. He’s quickly becoming a Mandalorian, not the Mandalorian; just one of a large group of tough dudes in cool helmets.

As a viewer, it does seem like Favreau has a plan for the wider Star Wars universe; he’s planting a lot of seeds that can be picked up in other shows like the upcoming Ahsoka, and maybe even a Rangers of the New Republic series if that ever gets off the ground. But that’s the future; the present of The Mandalorian is awfully muddled. With just three episodes left in this entire season, it still feels like it’s putting the pieces in place for a story that hasn’t even begun yet.

  • ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ Ending After Next Season Says Producer

‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ Ending After Next Season Says Producer

    [ad_1]

This is bad news. Pretty pretty pretty pretty prettyyyyyyyyyyyyy bad news.

It appears that the upcoming twelfth season of Curb Your Enthusiasm will be its last. At least that is according to Jon Hayman, who has worked as a writer and producer on the HBO comedy series. Today, he tweeted (and then later deleted) “Maybe you love the show. Maybe you hate the show. Maybe you don’t give a s—. In any event, shooting the last scene of the last episode of the final season” along with a behind-the-scenes photo.

READ MORE: The Strangest Movies Based on TV Shows

In a tweet of his own (that hasn’t been deleted as of this writing), longtime Curb director and producer Robert B. Weide called March 27 his “last day(?)” on the show, suggesting perhaps it is not the definitive end.

After 12 seasons and over 100 episodes, maybe the news isn’t shocking, even if it is disappointing. In fact, you could probably guess this would be the last season of Curb Your Enthusiasm from the fact that Larry David actually shot a version of the Season 11 finale where “Larry David” would have died, then decided against airing it. You still have to think some horrible, hilarious fate will befall him in the season finale as well. (It would honestly be a little disappointing if the show ended and nothing horrible happened to Larry. It just feels like karmically, something needs to go down.)

It’s still sort of mind-boggling, now that it’s apparently winding down, that Curb Your Enthusiasm has been ongoing for as long as it has. Seinfeld ended 25 years ago! The first comedy special that grew into Curb debuted the following year! Curb has been a part of our lives ever since then. It’s had a hell of a run. Of course, you can still watch the full run of the show on HBO Max.

HBO has yet to officially comment on Curb Your Enthusiasm’s status after Season 12.

Tearful Nashville TV Anchors Comfort Each Other As They Report On School Shooting

    [ad_1]

Nashville news anchors Holly Thompson and Amanda Hara chocked back tears and comforted each other Monday while reporting on the Covenant School shooting that left six dead. (Watch the videos below.)

As Thompson confirmed the deaths of three children, the broadcaster, overcome with emotion, said: “My heart is just hurting right now.” Hara extended a hand to hold Thompson’s arm and continued the segment for NBC affiliate WSMV.

Minutes later, Hara began to cry during another update, and Thompson reached over to her colleague.

Earlier, Hara’s voice quivered as she noted that one of her children was in lockdown as a precaution, and another was in a school “working with security.”

“It’s gonna be OK,” Thompson said as she patted Hara on the shoulder.

The Nashville shooting was the deadliest school attack since 21 died in the Uvalde, Texas, massacre in May, CNN reported.

The news network counted 19 school or college shootings this year that resulted in injury or death.

‘Star Wars’ Unveils First Look at ‘Young Jedi Adventures’ Series

    [ad_1]

After The Mandalorian finishes its third season run, the mantle of the next ongoing Star Wars show on Disney+ shall be passed to a new generation of younglings or foundlings or yuenglings or whatever they call kids in Star Wars lately.

Yes, the next Disney+ Star Wars series is titled Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures, an animated series for kids that seems to want to be what Spidey and His Amazing Friends is for Marvel for of the galaxy far, far away: A bright, colorful, and fun introductory series for little children to get them into this franchise before they’re old enough to deal with Oedipal plot twists, arms being lopped off by lightsabers, and the destruction of entire planets by a moon-sized space station. Basically: It’s for kids who love Baby Yoda but can’t handle The Mandalorian.

Young Jedi Adventures — which I keep typing as “Young Jedi Chronicles” because I grew up watching The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, and that phrase has just never left my brain — follows a new group of heroes including Kai Brightstar, Lys Slay, Nubs, Nash Durango, and RJ-83, along with Master Yoda as they, the young Jedis, partake in assorted adventures.

To set up the show, Disney Junior just debuted a trio of shorts featuring the cast:

Set during The High Republic era, the animated series follows Jedi younglings as they study the ways of the Force, explore the galaxy, help citizens and creatures in need, and learn valuable skills needed to become Jedi along the way.

‘The Mandalorian‘: Every Chapter 20 Easter Egg and Secret

    [ad_1]

This week’s episode of The Mandalorian had a really cool cameo: From none other than Ahmed Best, who played Jar Jar Binks in the Star Wars prequels. Best is the Jedi who helps Grogu escape from Order 66, when the Clone Army slaughtered the Jedi at the behest of Emperor Palpatine. And Best is also playing his Jedi character, Kelleran Beq, from the recent game show Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge.

That’s just one of the really cool Easter eggs, hidden secrets, and little details you might have missed on The Mandalorian Chapter 20 – “The Foundling.” In our latest Star Wars video we go through dozens of moments and shots you need to see, including the themes of parents and children running through this week’s show, the nature of Mandalorian training, and why we think the ship that Grogu takes to escape Order 66 belonged to … Senator Jar Jar Binks. At 24 minutes, our video is almost as long as The Mandalorian episode itself. • ‘Smash’ Musical Finally Coming to Broadway

‘Smash’ Musical Finally Coming to Broadway

    [ad_1]

Smash was an NBC drama that ran in the early 2000s. Many people think it ended a bit too early, but luckily, it’ getting its own Broadway play. The show told the story of a group of friends trying to make a living creating and producing Broadway plays. Of course, it’s an extremely demanding field. Sacrifices must be made to have a successful career there. The series largely follows a successful play based on the life of Marilyn Monroe, titled Bombshell.

The actual Broadway production which is just now reaching fruition has been in the works since roughly 2015. Luckily, Steven Spielberg came in to help the whole thing along. Spielberg had this to say about the show:

Smash is near and dear to my heart, and it was always my hope that a musical inspired by the show would eventually come to the stage. We now have an incredible creative team, and I’m looking forward to completing the Smash journey, which began with my producing partners over 10 years ago.

Robert Greenblatt is also helping produce the whole thing, adding to Spielberg’s statement.

“Speaking for myself and Neil Meron, we’re elated that Steven wanted to join us as we bring ‘Smash’ to the stage, as we’ve always felt that Shaiman and Wittman’s incredible score belonged on Broadway. And collaborating with the incomparable Susan Stroman, one of the best directors of musicals, plus first-class bookwriters Rick Elice and Bob Martin, and our original choreographer Josh Bergasse, is pure joy.”

The show will be about the creation of Bombshell, like the TV series, but the announcement also claims that the stage version will “depart liberally from the series.” We’ll have to see just how liberally.

Lock Upp season 2 has got everyone excited. Fans are desperately waiting to know all the details about the contestants. Many names are making headlines and a lot of rumours about the new contestants are keeping fans hooked. Zeeshan Khan makes a shocking statement against Kangana Ranaut

In a recent interview with Showsha, Zeeshan Khan was asked to give a piece of advice for the contestants of Lock Upp 2. Surprisingly he said that the contestants should not listen to Kangana Ranaut’s advice and that she gives a biased opinion. He says that she does not understand anything and rather the contestants should be themselves instead of listening to her. He said, “My advice to the future contestant would be, be who you are. It is a jail-themed show. Our so-called ‘queen’ of the show (Kangana Ranaut) has absolutely no understanding of what happens inside. She will have a biased opinion. You stay strong on your grounds. Trust me, do not take the queen’s advice ever, ever.” Also Read – Lock Upp season 2: Kangana Ranaut, Ekta Kapoor’s show struggling to get contestants? • Lance Reddick, ‘The Wire’ and ‘John Wick’ Star, Dies at 60

Lance Reddick, ‘The Wire’ and ‘John Wick’ Star, Dies at 60

    [ad_1]

A new John Wick movie is opening in theaters next week, featuring many of the franchise’s longtime stars — including Lance Reddick, who plays Charon, the efficient concierge of the film’s Continental Hotel. But in a shocking bit of news, Reddick has died in the midst of the John Wick: Chapter 4 press tour. According to TMZ, Reddick’s body “was discovered at his Studio City home Friday morning around 9:30 AM. His cause of death is currently unclear, but our law enforcement sources say it appears to be natural.” Reddick was only 60 years old.

They also note that Reddick was posting videos of himself to social media as recently as Wednesday morning — although they note he appeared to be in his home rather than attending the John Wick premiere in New York City.

Reddick was born and raised in Baltimore, a fact that came in handy for the role that first brought Reddick to widespread attention and acclaim, playing Lt. Daniels of the Baltimore Police Department on the classic HBO cop series The Wire. Reddick appeared on all five seasons of the show, stealing scenes with his intense, no-nonsense line deliveries.

A graduate of the Yale School of Drama, Reddick also had recurring roles on Oz (as undercover cop Johnny Basil) and Lost (as Matthew Abaddon on the series fourth and fifth seasons). He then went on to play a starring role on four seasons of Fringe as the leader of the Fringe division, and on Bosch, where he played another hardboiled cop. He was recently seen as Albert Wesker on Netflix’s Resident Evil TV show, and will soon appear as Zeus in Disney’s upcoming Percy Jackson and the Olympians show. He has done dozens of other guest spots on television series; since The Wire ended, he has never stopped working.

In the world of film, Reddick had roles in films ranging from White House Down and Oldboy to The Guest and Godzilla vs. Kong. As Charon, the right-hand man of Continental Hotel manager Winston, he was a steady, dryly hilarious presence in every John Wick film. He also has a supporting role in the upcoming John Wick spinoff film Ballerina.

This is just terrible, shocking news. Reddick was a young man, still very much in his prime as an actor. He should have had decades of roles still ahead of him. What a tragedy.
