    Disney+ Plus Shares New ‘Ahsoka’ Trailer

    Disney has finally released a full trailer for the long-awaited Ahsoka. The new Star Wars series is premiering on Aug. 23 with a special 2-episode debut. The rest will likely be released on a week-to-week basis.

    Unfortunately, the official synopsis from Disney doesn’t really tell us too much about the plot. That being said, it takes place well after the Clone Wars and even the fall of the Galactic Empire. Ahsoka is one of the few people willing to try to prevent the rise of Thrawn.

    The official Disney synopsis is as follows:

    Set after the fall of the Empire, Star Wars: Ahsoka follows the former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.

     

    Ahsoka stars Rosario Dawson, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ray Stevenson, Ivanna Sakhno, Diana Lee Inosanto, David Tennant, Lars Mikkelsen and Eman Esfandi. The episodes are directed by Dave Filoni, Steph Green, Peter Ramsey, Jennifer Getzinger, Geeta Vasant Patel and Rick Famuyiwa. Dave Filoni is the head writer and executive produces along with Jon Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, Colin Wilson and Carrie Beck. Karen Gilchrist serves as co-executive producer.

    In addition to the trailer, there’s also a short featurette that explores the path Rosario Dawson took to get to her role as Ahsoka Tano. What started as just a petition on the internet actually turned into a major Star Wars role.

    The higher-ups must have taken notice of what the fans wanted and agreed that it was a good choice. From there, they brought her on board and gave her the role of a lifetime.

    The First Marvel Musical Is Now Playing at Disneyland

    What started as an extremely elaborate joke on a TV show has now, somehow, become an actual stage show — not to mention the first musical from Marvel — playing at one of the biggest theme parks in the world.

    It’s called Rogers: The Musical and it’s an expansion of the show of the same name that was briefly seen in the opening episode of Marvel’s Hawkeye TV series. In that show, Clint Barton takes his family to see a Broadway musical — which turns out to be a deeply ridiculous show based on the events of the first Avengers movie. While viewers only got a glimpse of Rogers: The Musical at that point, at the end of the season, Marvel gave fans the “entire” show as a post-credits Easter egg:

    The response to Hawkeye was positive enough that Disney and Marvel decided to turn Rogers: The Musical into an actual show at its Disney California Adventure park in Anaheim. The show, which runs about 30 minutes, premiered earlier this week. It features the big number from Hawkeye, plus several new songs written by composer Christopher Lennertz.

    You can see what the real show looks like in the video below:

    Most importantly (as far as I am concerned) there is a whole tie-in menu at Disneyland connected to Rogers: The Musical including a pastrami pretzel dog, red white and blue kettle corn, and something called a “Shawarm-izza,” which is a combination of words so monstrous I don’t even think Thanos could have conceived it. (Scroll thru this Instagram post to see the pictures.)

    If you want to see this thing for yourself, Rogers: The Musical will be playing at Disney California Adventure through August 31. If it’s half as weird as Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, we’ll be delighted.

    When Pat Sajak announced he was retiring from hosting duties on Wheel of Fortune after some 40 years, the main question on everyone’s mind was: Who replaces him?

    Now we have our answer: Sony Television announced today that longtime American Idol host Ryan Seacrest will replace Sajak as the host of Wheel of Fortune.

    In a statement, Seacrest said

    I’m truly humbled to be stepping into the footsteps of the legendary Pat Sajak. I can say, along with the rest of America, that it’s been a privilege and pure joy to watch Pat and Vanna on our television screens for an unprecedented 40 years, making us smile every night and feel right at home with them. Pat, I love the way you’ve always celebrated the contestants and made viewers at home feel at ease. I look forward to learning everything I can from you during this transition.

    Elsewhere in his statement, Seacrest did note that he was looking forward to working with “the great Vanna White,” indicating that while Sajak is retiring, his longtime co-host on the series is not.

    Sajak revealed his impending retirement on his Twitter account on June 12, saying “it’s been a wonderful ride” and “many thanks to you all.”

    Sajak, who turns 77 in October, started in radio as a teenager, worked for Armed Forces Radio during the Vietnam War, and then moved into local TV news; he was a weatherman in Los Angeles before he was chosen by Wheel of Fortune creator Merv Griffin to host the series in 1981, replacing Chuck Woolery. In addition to hosting American Idol, Seacrest, who turns 49 later this year, recently wrapped up a stint co-hosting the daytime talk staple Live With Kelly and Ryan. He also hosts the syndicated radio shows American Top 40 and On Air With Ryan Seacrest.

    Sajak is not totally done hosting Wheel of Fortune yet. He will return as host for one final season, which will begin airing this fall. Seacrest will replace him starting with the 2024-25 season.

    For almost 70 years now, one giant lizard has menaced and/or saved Japan over and over: Godzilla.     Pluto TV has announced they are launching a Godzilla Channel next month.     The following post contains SPOILERS for the first episode of Secret Invasion.

    There are casualties in every war, and you had to expect at least a few were going to come in Marvel‘s Secret Invasion series. But the new Marvel Cinematic Universe show wasted little time in shocking audiences; the season premiere ended with the very unexpected death of Agent Maria Hill, a Marvel mainstay since the first Avengers movie more than a decade ago, played by Cobie Smulders.

    No death is guaranteed to remain permanent in comics, or in comic book movies, but at least for now, it looks like we won’t be seeing Maria Hill onscreen again. Smulders gave an interview to The Hollywood Reporter about her farewell to the MCU, and said she was very surprised that it had remained a secret until the show’s premiere, especially because Hill’s death was filmed on location in front of a lot of extras.

    “There were a lot of people around,” Smulders said, “so, again, I’m surprised that there wasn’t an image that got leaked. I guess that’s the respect that Marvel has earned over the last decade, which is like, ‘Don’t spoil it for people.’ And nobody did, thankfully.”

    The character of Maria Hill was introduced to Marvel Comics in the mid-2000s. Created by Brian Michael Bendis and David Finch in the pages of The New Avengers, she was a new top-level S.H.I.E.L.D. agent at a time when Nick Fury had been removed from power in the organization. She’s remained a major supporting character in the comic books, and was added to the MCU in a similar role in The Avengers. Smulders went on to play Hill in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Infinity War, and Endgame, as well as in Spider-Man: Far From Home (although technically in that movie she was playing a Skrull pretending to be the real Maria Hill).

    Smulders said after she finished her scenes for Secret Invasion, she received some gifts and champagne from Marvel. As for whether this is truly the end of her affiliation with the MCU, she said, or if she could return in some way down the line, Smulders added “I will always answer the call, but I have no idea what they have planned for future productions. But I guess anything’s possible in the multiverse.”

    Legacy media companies enter dark times as failures mount and Netflix rises again

    Companies and industries have ups and downs. The legacy media industry is in a valley.

    The first half of 2023 has been a colossal disappointment for media executives who wanted this year to be a rebound from a terrible 2022, when a slowdown in streaming subscribers cut valuations for Netflix, Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global roughly in half.

    Instead, investors have once again become excited by Netflix’s future prospects as it’s cracked down on password sharing, potentially leading to tens of millions of new signups. Netflix shares have surged the past five months, outpacing the S&P 500.

    Meanwhile, the legacy players can’t get out of their own way.

    “When it rains it pours,” said LightShed media analyst Rich Greenfield. “It just keeps getting worse.”

    It’s been a bumpy ride for Disney Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger since he returned to lead the company late last year. Disney recently finished laying off 7,000 employees. Chief Financial Officer Christine McCarthy stepped down last week. The company is pulling programming from its streaming services to save money. Its animation business is in a major rut, with its latest Pixar movie, “Elemental,” recording the lowest opening weekend gross for the studio since the original “Toy Story” premiered in 1995. Shares have struggled in the past five months.

    Warner Bros. Discovery vs. the S&P 500 over the past five months.

    Paramount Global cut its dividend last quarter as streaming losses peak this year and a weak advertising market exacerbates a terminally ill cable network business. Wells Fargo released an analyst note Friday saying the bull case and the bear case for the company were the same: selling for parts. Warren Buffett, perhaps the most acclaimed investor in history, told CNBC that Paramount’s streaming offering “fundamentally is not that good of a business.”

    NBCUniversal has weathered the storm the best, shielded by its parent company, Comcast, which gets its revenue from cable and wireless assets. It’s also taken advantage of missteps from the aforementioned. MSNBC became the No. 1 cable news network this month for the first time in 120 weeks, dethroning Fox News for a week amid coverage of former President Donald Trump’s federal indictment. Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is by far the biggest box office hit of the year, yet shares haven’t moved much.

    Comcast vs the S&P 500 over the past five months.

    All of this is happening with an extended Hollywood writers’ strike going on in the background with no end in sight. The writers know the longer the strike lasts, the more pain will be inflicted on media companies, who will eventually run out of already-made scripted content. Zaslav recently gave a commencement address to Boston University and was drowned out by boos and chants of “pay your writers.”

    This week may bring even more bad news. Film and TV actors are set to join writers on strike unless they reach a deal with Hollywood studios by Friday.

    The beneficiary of Hollywood work shutdowns will likely be YouTube, TikTok, and Netflix, which continues to churn out international content that is unaffected by the strike, said Greenfield.

    Legacy media may get a small reprieve if advertising jumps back as the 2024 U.S. presidential campaign heats up. But there’s still scant evidence investors will reward media companies for simply cutting costs. There’s currently no strong growth narrative for legacy media, and consolidation prospects are murky as regulators block media-adjacent deals such as Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision and Penguin Random House’s proposed purchase of Simon & Schuster.

    The industry just wrapped up its annual advertising gala in Cannes, France. Legacy media executives still spent company dollars to make the trip to hang out on yachts and drink rosé. The backdrop was as beautiful as ever.

    But the landscape is bleak.

    Steven Soderbergh’s latest post-retirement series comes to Max next month. Full Circle, according to the official synopsis, is “the story of an investigation into a botched kidnapping that uncovers long-held secrets connecting multiple characters and cultures in present day New York City” and features a cast that includes Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Timothy Olyphant, CCH Pounder, and Dennis Quaid.

    Max is also getting more episodes of The Idol, the final episodes of The Righteous Gemstones and How to With John Wilson, a new documentary about Oscar De La Hoya, a Barbie Dreamhouse-related reality series, and a rebooted version of Project Greenlight featuring new mentors and filmmakers.     Within minutes of its opening scene in its very first episode, Marvel’s Secret Invasion has already given us one massive shock: Everett Ross, the beloved secret agent seen in the Captain America and Black Panther movies, was actually a shapeshifting Skrull. Now this could be a relatively recent thing; Ross (Martin Freeman) might have been replaced by a Skrull off-camera at some point after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

    But if you look back at Ross’ appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s actually quite plausible that Ross could have secretly been a Skrull for a long time — or maybe even the entire time he’s been a Marvel movie character.     HBO Series Could Be Coming to Netflix

    The brutal competition among streaming video has only gotten more fierce in recent years as most major media conglomerates have tried to capture a piece of the market by turning their content libraries into their own services. When Netflix first starting streaming movies and shows they were able to license content from almost every Hollywood studio because no one else was streaming content, and they were happy for the extra revenue. These days, those same studios have their own streaming outlets and they want consumers to come to them to watch those titles.

    But it appears that strategy might be evolving. According to a new report, Warner Bros. Discovery — the owners of HBO and the Max streaming service, along with plenty of other cable channels — are now in talks to license some of their library to their rivals at Netflix.

    Deadline says that the first title up for discussion is Insecure, the Issa Rae comedy series that aired on HBO for five seasons from 2016 to 2021 — but that “there are other titles being discussed” as well.

    Insecure is currently streaming on Max, and supposedly if the deal goes through, the content that WBD licenses to Netflix would not be exclusive — in other words, the HBO content would remain on Max even if it did also show up elsewhere as well. Deadline claimed the deal was “a financial move” opposed by some “HBO veterans.”

    The news of the potential deal comes just a few weeks after the launch of WBD’s Max service, replacing the previous HBO Max app. In recent months, Warner Bros. Discovery has also shelved some planned Max original content (like the now-infamous Batgirl movie) and pulled previously produced original content off of HBO/Max in a cost-cutting measure. They also began licensing out some other HBO content (like the Westworld TV series of a few years ago) to free streaming services like Tubi and The Roku Channel.

    It will be interesting to see what happens next. Does WBD start licensing out their content even more widely? Will you soon be able to watch The Sopranos on Netflix or Hulu?

    Wednesday Replaces Stranger Things as Netflix’s Most Popular Show

    Since the summer of 2021, Netflix has been publishing lists of its most popular films and shows on a public website. The series and movies were ranked according to “popularity” — a nebulous metric the streaming service determined by counting the total number of hours of a show or a movie that its subscribers consumed. The film and show (in English and in any other language) with the most hours consumed in a week was deemed the most popular that week. Every Tuesday, they updated the website.

    If you are even slightly smarter than me at math, then you recognize there is an obvious flaw in this rubric: It favors long shows and movies. If 1 million Netflix subscribers all watch a movie that is 90 minutes long and a movie that’s three hours long, then the three-hour movie will appear to be twice as popular on Netflix’s top ten lists purely on the basis of being twice as long and therefore accruing twice as many hours viewed.

    To address this issue, Netflix just adjusted its Top 10 measurements. Now, the length of a show or movie will be taken into account in these measurements and the most “popular” titles will be determined according to “views” — the total amount of content consumed, divided by their runtime.

    Changing this measurement immediately changed the order of Netflix’s all-time most popular series list. Previously Stranger Things Season 4 was Netflix’s “Most Popular TV” show in English, with 1.838 billion hour views. Wednesday was previously ranked second, with 1.718 billion hours viewed. But Wednesday is a much shorter season of TV than Stranger Things; a little under seven hours versus a little over 13 hours, respectively. So when you divide by their runtime, Wednesday has 252 million views, while Stranger Things has only 140 million. And so Wednesday is now your new all-time most popular Netflix series.

    In an interview with Etimes, Archana Gautam spoke about the reported fight with Shiv Thakare and said that host Rohit Shetty helped them resolve their fight. Archana revealed that she did not like that Shiv Thakare insulted her in front of everyone. She added that she did not like that he said wrong things about her mother. Archana revealed that Rohit Shetty got them to patch up but she asserted that since they are both Virgos, ego clashes are bound to happen. Further, she added that fights are a part and parcel of the bond that they share. On the other hand, Shiv Thakare said that there is no fight between the two of them and praised Archana Gautam for performing the stunts pretty well.     Arnold Schwarzenegger is perhaps one of the strangest examples of an actor who did something different with his life later on. While most people are probably familiar with him from films like Terminator and Total Recall, he then served as the Governor of California for eight years. For a lot of politicians, a governorship is a stepping stone to a Presidential run — but not for Schwarzenegger, because in order to be President, you have to be a natural-born U.S. citizen, and Schwarzenegger is obviously not.

    If the rules were different, though, Schwarzenegger would like to run for President. In an interview for Who’s Talking?, Chris Wallace asked Schwarzenegger “The Constitution says that the President has to be a natural-born U.S. citizen. If not for that, would you have run for president?” He replied…

    Well, yes, of course. I mean, I think the field was wide open in 2016. And I think the field is open right now. I mean, think about it right now. I mean, who is there? There is really not a person that can bring everyone together. Who is here today that people say okay, he’s not too old or he’s not too this or too that, or is that because it’s now a question about who do you vote against then who do you vote for?

    He added that if he could run he “absolutely” would because, in his eyes, “I could win that election.” (It’s a “no brainer” he added.)

    Unless someone changes the Constitution very quickly, though, that’s not going to happen. But if you want to watch some new Schwarzenegger stuff,  though, that you can do; his new series FUBAR and his new documentary Arnold are both streaming on Netflix.

    In a statement posted to his Twitter account, Wheel of Fortune host Sajak wrote “Well, the time has come. I’ve decided that our 41st season, which begins in September, will be my last.” (Sajak’s Twitter handle is @PatOnWheel … he’s gonna need to change that.)

    Sajak wrote “it’s been a wonderful ride, and I’ll have more to say in the coming months. Many thanks to you all.”

    Sajak, who turns 77 in October, started in radio as a teenager, worked for Armed Forces Radio during the Vietnam War, and then moved into local TV news; he was a weatherman in Los Angeles before he was chosen by Wheel of Fortune creator Merv Griffin to host the series in 1981, replacing Chuck Woolery.

    Wheel of Fortune actually originated as a daytime series on NBC, which is the version Woolery hosted before Sajak; the syndicated Wheel launched in the fall of 1983 and has remained an afternoon and early evening fixture there all over the country ever since. (Sajak’s co-host, Vanna White, joined the show in 1982.) Last year, Sajak became the longest tenured host in the history of TV game shows, surpassing a record previously held by The Price Is Right host Bob Barker.

    No replacement for Sajak has been announced, but as he still has a full season left to go before retirement, Wheel of Fortune producers have time to do a thorough search. After he steps down as host, Sajak will remain with the series as a consultant.

    TV Shows That Should Have Ended After One Season

    These shows had incredible first seasons followed by disappointing ones. Maybe they should have just ended after one season in the first place?
