Why ‘Secret Invasion’ Should Have Been a Movie

    [ad_1]

Most Marvel Comics are well-suited to TV shows. After all, comics are serialized stories, and so are TV series. But in the case of Secret Invasion, Marvel made a big mistake taking this comic and making it a series and not a film. For one thing Secret Invasion was a massive crossover event in the comics. It featured basically every Marvel hero, and it involved the shocking revelation that many Marvel heroes — including some of the oldest and most trusted Avengers — were secretly Skrulls in disguise.

The Secret Invasion TV show sort of tried this trick on a much smaller scale — bur that’s just it. Secret Invasion the TV show felt so small. It needed a bigger budget and a bigger cast, and in our latest Marvel Cinematic Universe video, we explain why Secret Invasion would have worked so much better as a film. We’ll explore the post-Avengers: Endgame state of the MCU, and break down how we could have liked an Avengers 5 based on Secret Invasion to play out. Watch the full video below:

  • Sacha Baron Cohen Will Bring Back Ali G For a New Tour

Sacha Baron Cohen Will Bring Back Ali G For a New Tour

    [ad_1]

Sacha Baron Cohen has a few different major comedy personas, but the one that started it all was Ali G. The Ali G character (who’s in-universe real name is Alistair Leslie Graham) was created as a parody of specific types of youth culture in the U.K. at the time. Despite being around since 1998, the character didn’t really take off in a big way until the early 2000s, after HBO began several seasons of Cohen’s Da Ali G Show — which also featured Cohen’s other famous creations, Borat and Brüno.

Like most of Cohen’s other characters, Ali G’s humor is mostly derived from his interactions with normal people. They’re usually baited into a false sense of security and don’t realize that Ali G is a character. They speak to him as if he was a real person. Ali G was officially retired back in 2007, and did appear in one feature film — 2002’s Ali G Indahouse — although he’s made a handful of appearances since then.

READ MORE: The Best Comedy Movies of the Last 25 Years

According to a new report, Ali G is about to make a big comeback — although not on film or TV, in part because of the ongoing writers and actors strikes. A source told Variety that: “As a SAG and WGA member he is supporting the ongoing strike alongside his fellow writers and actors.” Instead, Cohen is working on a potential comedy tour where he would perform in character as Ali G.

While Ali G might have been the character that Cohen built his career on, it might be the case that he’s now most well-known for Borat. Obviously, that could change if this upcoming live show is a big hit.

  • 2023 Emmys Officially Announce New Date (In 2024)

2023 Emmys Officially Announce New Date (In 2024)

    [ad_1]

Amid the ongoing strikes held by WGA and SAG-AFTRA, the 2023 Emmys have been postponed. Luckily, we now we have their new date… provided the contracts for writers and actors are actually settled by then. Provided all of that goes well, the 2023 Emmys will air on  Monday January 15, 2024.

The original date for the show was supposed to be September 18, 2023. (The date also happens to coincide with Martin Luther King Jr. Day.)

READ MORE: The Best TV Shows of the Year

With negotiations between the studios, the writers, and the stars all at a standstill, there was almost no change the strikes would be resolved by mid-September when the original Emmys telecast was set to air. The new date suggests Emmys producers think the strikes should be resolved by early 2024 — although that’s still quite a few months away.

The new date pushes the Emmys, typically a fall affair, into the middle of the movies’ awards season. Now the Emmys will be competing for attention with the Golden Globes, the SAG Awards, and the Critics Choice Awards, which will all air in the weeks before and after the Emmys, assume the strikes have in fact come to an end by then. And some of these shows also honor television series as well as movies — and they may have different eligibility rules than the Emmys, which are technically for shows that aired from June 2022 to May 2023. By the time the show is finally mounted, its picks could feel a little out of date.

  • Disney+ Plans to Eliminate Password Sharing Next Year

Disney+ Plans to Eliminate Password Sharing Next Year

    [ad_1]

After Netflix decided to institute policies to get rid of password sharing, they added millions of new subscribers. It looks like Disney is hoping to emulate their success.

While Netflix’s new policy about sharing accounts wasn’t popular with the public, the results (at least financially) speak for themselves. And now Disney says it is planning on following suit in more than just one way. Later this fall, Disney+ (with no ads) goes up $3 to $13.99. Hulu goes up to a whopping $17.99, and ESPN+ will hit $10.99. As people have speculated for a long time, it seems like it would actually be more cost-effective just to grab a cable package at this point.

READ MORE: The Real Reason Secret Invasion Was a Big Disappointment

But there’s more. On the latest Disney earnings call, CEO Bob Iger revealed the company is “actively exploring ways to address account sharing” — i.e. to crack down on the sharing of passwords, a la Netflix.

    He added…

“[We are considering]  the best options for paying subscribers to share their accounts with friends and family. Later this year, we will begin to update our subscriber agreements with additional terms on our sharing policies, and we will roll out tactics to drive monetization sometime in 2024.

When asked how many people are thought to be sharing passwords, Iger added:

“I’m not going to give you a specific number, except to say that it’s significant. What we don’t know, of course, is as we get to work on this, how much of the password sharing as we basically eliminate it will convert to growth in subs. Obviously, we believe there will be some.

In other words, if you’re using someone else’s Disney+ account without paying, enjoy it now. It is not going to last.

Disney Is Raising the Price of Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+

    [ad_1]

Depending on which of Disney’s streaming services you subscribe to —Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN+ — your bill may go up in the very near future. And depending on what plan you use (Disney offers customers to bundle the various services together in various ways), the price increase could be pretty significant.

The monthly price of Disney+ with no ads, for example, is going up to $13.99 a month, and $139.99 a year. Previously, the monthly price was $10.99. The cost of Hulu without ads is going up as well, to $17.99 a month. However, Disney will offer a new bundle of both services (ad free) for $19.99 a month, which would save customers $12 a month compared to paying for both separately.

The current price of Netflix’s plan with no commercials is a monthly $15.49 fee; Max without ads is currently $15.99 a month.

READ MORE: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Makes Streaming Debut on Disney+

Here is the full list of plans and prices that was sent via a Disney press release:

The price increases (noted with an asterisk in the chart) go into effect on October 12. The new “Duo Premium” bundle option for Hulu and Disney+ together will become available starting on September 6.

$139.99 annually for Disney+ with no ads is a steep increase from just a few years ago; on my personal Disney+ account, I paid $79.99 for one year of Disney+ just last November. (Currently the Disney+ website offers new customers a full year ad-free subscription for $109.99.) And that’s only the price for a year of Disney+; it doesn’t include Hulu or ESPN+ (or any other streaming service you might want to also subscribe to, like Max or Netflix or Criterion Channel). These prices can add up very quickly for customers who want to have a variety of viewing options.

Disney+ also announced today the addition of ad-supported tiers for customers in Europe and Canada; this tier was introduced recently for U.S. customers.

  • ‘John Wick’ TV Series ‘The Continental’ Debuts Trailer

‘John Wick’ TV Series ‘The Continental’ Debuts Trailer

    [ad_1]

John Wick: Chapter 4 didn’t leave a ton of room to continue its story into sequels, so how about a prequel instead?

The story continues (or I guess begins?) in The Continental: From the World of John Wick, which is set to premiere on the Peacock streaming service next month. Set at the hotel from the John Wick films where assassin types congregate and mingle, The Continental is a prequel that reveals the early days of a young Winston Scott — who eventually becomes the manager of the Continental in the John Wick movies, and is played by Ian McShane.

On the show, Winston is played by Colin Woodell, and the series looks a bit like a heist of said hotel, engineered by Winston and some of his fellow underworld allies. The series is set in the 1970s and also stars Mel Gibson; watch the trailer below.

READ MORE: How John Wick Pulled Off Its Greatest Action Scene Ever

The Continental director and executive producer Albert Hughes had this to say about why he wanted to make a TV show set in the world of John Wick:

The challenge for me was capitalizing on television’s ability to deliver longer form storytelling and deeper character arcs. We found this format to be an exciting opportunity to create three feature films that balance storytelling and interesting idiosyncratic characters while giving the hardcore Wick fans more of what they love – original high-octane action. We can’t wait for you to see what we’ve all been working on; we believe it is great television at its best.

Here is the series’ official synopsis:

The three-part event will explore the origin behind the iconic hotel-for-assassins centerpiece of the John Wick universe through the eyes and actions of a young Winston Scott, as he’s dragged into the Hell-scape of 1970’s New York City to face a past he thought he’d left behind. Winston charts a deadly course through the hotel’s mysterious underworld in a harrowing attempt to seize the hotel where he will eventually take his future throne.

The Continental: From the World of John Wick will premiere on Peacock on September 22. The series will roll out weekly, with subsequent episodes on September 29 and October 6.

Is the MCU In Trouble After ‘Secret Invasion’?

    [ad_1]

Obviously the Marvel Cinematic Universe is not “dead” after Secret Invasion failed to live up to the audience‘s expectations. Even if the show wasn’t great, there are still lots more Marvel movies and shows already on the way. The MCU isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

But is it about to change in a big way? For more than a decade Marvel has had its own preferred method of making movies and shows, often putting visual development and design before their scripts. They would often plot out the major set pieces and then fit in the story around them. One candidate to direct an MCU movie publicly stated she was told not to worry about directing action scenes because those would be taken care of by Marvel’s in-house team.

But some recent critical flops (like Secret Invasion) and even some commercial disappointments have fans beginning to wonder if Marvel has to reset its priorities and its plans. In our latest video, we look at what could be improved at Marvel — and we also explore why it’s way too early to say the sky is falling over there. Watch the full video below:

    [ad_1]

The trailer for Loki Season 2 introduces a new concept in the MCU: “Time slipping.” Exactly how it works and what it means is still unclear, but from the trailer we can tell that Tom Hiddleston’s Loki has this mysterious affliction, and it’s going to be a major problem for him in the upcoming episodes of the show.

But we have some theories about time slipping, including how it could potentially reboot the entire timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That’s the subject of our latest Loki video, which also considers how time slipping compares with “glitching” in the Spider-Verse movies, how time works for everyone in reality versus in the MCU, what the final scene of Loki Season 1 tells us about time slipping, how Kang factors into all of this, and why “The Threshold” he talked about in the Season 1 finale is hugely important. Parents Likely Showing Kids Censored Episodes of ‘Bluey’

    [ad_1]

Parents and their kids in the U.S. may have been watching censored versions of the popular cartoon, Bluey and not have even known.

The Australian animated show has been continues to be a hit in the U.S. thanks to its availability on the Disney+ streaming platform.

Why Has Bluey Been Censored In the U.S.?

According to information recently shared by Kidspot, there are at least seven Bluey episodes on Disney+ that are edited versions of the Australian originals.

“Some scenes have been censored or edited on Disney+ in order to comply with U.S. television standards and practices,” the article states. “That means some jokes and innuendoes have been removed or altered as they’re deemed ‘inappropriate.’”

Scenes indicated as being edited by Kidspot include one with a character on a toilet, another that mentions farting and also an episode where a dog implies he will have a vasectomy.

The main source of info for the article is TikTok account @world.shaker.

The dad and Bluey expert has been breaking down episodes of the show since last year, and has created a comparison of the U.S. and Australian versions of the show.

“I genuinely don’t get this level of censorship,” he says in one video. “It‘s silly.”

Some Bluey Episodes Have Been Banned Completely

An article posted on Fatherly.com earlier this year contends there are way more than seven episodes of Bluey that have been censored for the American audience.

The website has compiled a list of 16 episodes that have been either censored or banned altogether in the U.S. Fatherly’s list includes an episode where a sports fan says the team will “flog” their opponents and another where “Jack seems to act like a child with ADHD.”

According to Fatherly, there have been instances where a ban has been lifted on the U.S.-version of an episode, “but so far, that has only happened once or twice.”

  • ‘The Office’ Star Says He Will Return Crowdfunded Money for Unmade Spinoff

‘The Office’ Star Says He Will Return Crowdfunded Money for Unmade Spinoff

    [ad_1]

Leslie David Baker, perhaps better known as Stanley from the American version of The Office, has had to put his spinoff on hiatus. This proposed project was initially announced back in 2020, when the campaign for an Uncle Stan spun off from The Office went viral. Baker put up a Kickstarter which received a total of $336,450. Fortunately, that was enough to surpass the original goal of $300,000.

But now three years later, Uncle Stan never materialized, leaving fans and donors wondering what happened to the project, and to their money. This week, Baker posted a statement regarding Uncle Stan social media, and the project’s Kickstarter page.

“Initial delays were caused because of the Covid lockdowns and pushed us back further than expected,” he explained. “As things started returning to normal and we commenced reward fulfillment and preproduction, the WGA strike was announced causing us to put things on hold again. As you are all aware, SAG is now on strike and we will continue to be on hold indefinitely until an agreement is reached. We stand in solidarity with those in the entertainment industry and will do our part in supporting WGA and SAG during these times.”

READ MORE: TV Shows That Changed Drastically From Their Original Pilot

Baker claims that the project will be made but for now, those who backed the show will get their money returned.

“In light of the current economic situation,” Baker said, “we felt that this was the best course of action. You will receive a message notifying you of your refund as soon as it is issued and you can expect to receive it over the following weeks. We will also be contacting Kickstarter to facilitate expediting this matter. We have remained in constant communication with our backers via direct messaging and rewards have continued to be fulfilled during this time.”

Baker also noted that “although the total funded amount shown on our Kickstarter campaign page was stated as $336,450.53, that was not the actual final amount we received,” and claimed that the final amount they were given from Kickstarter was “exactly $110,629.81. The funds were never used for any purposes other than reward fulfillment and backer refunds, and have otherwise remained accounted for and untouched in the account.”

It’s unlikely we’ll have more news about the spinoff any time soon, but according to Baker, it’s still going to happen eventually.

Old ‘Barbie’ Animated Series Becomes a Huge Hit on Netflix

    [ad_1]

Barbie’s enormous success in theaters continues to reverberate throughout the pop culture world. Rather than just showing up and doing insane numbers at the box office and that being that… Barbie is having a full-blown resurgence. Mattel has slowly and steadily been releasing tons of Barbie material over the years, just nothing quite on the level of the blockbuster feature film.

Between 2001 and 2009, 16 direct-to-video Barbie films were released. A good few of those are available on streaming services. The real star here is Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse though. This series has managed to take the number 5 spot on Netflix’s weekly top ten shows list, racking up 1.9 million viewers and 9.1 million total viewing hours.

The series actually started out premiered the internet, available on YouTube and the official Barbie website back in 2012. Up until the release of the Barbie movie, the streaming numbers for the series weren’t really anything to write home about. Now though, we can expect a very major uptick in pretty much all Barbie-related activity.

Life in the Dreamhouse follows Barbie and her boyfriend Ken, and various other characters in a mock reality show format. While not quite as meta as Greta Gerwig’s film, it does occasionally satirize the tropes of the Barbie brand.

Aside from just the major increase in attention on Barbie-related media, Mattel has big plans for the future. There are projects in the works centered around everything from Barney to Hot Wheels. There’s also the potential for a sequel in the works, although Barbie director Greta Gerwig said there were no immediate plans as of now. The focus was on creating a really solid single work, not so much on setting up a whole media franchise. Upon seeing the success of the first Barbie, Mattel will almost certainly want to make another.

If the movie wasn’t enough for you, you can definitely check out Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse on Netflix.

‘Disenchantment’ to End With Upcoming Season

    [ad_1]

After five years and 50 episodes, Disenchantment is coming to an end. Netflix announced today that the latest batch of ten episodes will conclude the series when it premieres on the streaming service later this fall.

The animated series was the first new creation from The Simpsons creator Matt Groening since Futurama, which first debuted on TV in 1999, and recently returned for its first new episodes in a decade on Hulu. Meanwhile, The Simpsons keeps trucking along. Its 25th season will premiere on Fox soon, and its already been renewed for a 36th season as well. It’s already produced 750 episodes. Poor Disenchantment was only 700 episodes from breaking The Simpsons’ record for the longest-running animated series in history. So close!

The Simpsons was Groening’s take on the family sitcom and Futurama was his sci-fi show. Disenchantment has been his place to poke fun of fantasy fiction, with jokes based on the genre’s typical tropes and cliché. You can see the teaser for the final season below:

‘Loki’: Every Easter Egg in the Season 2 Trailer

    [ad_1]

The trailer for Loki Season 2 gives us our first look at Ke Huy Quan’s new Marvel character. When he appears in the trailer, he’s wearing a jumpsuit with an “O.B.” on it. That almost certainly stands for ouroboros, the snake eatings its own tail, an ancient symbol for the cyclical nature of life. And that matches perfectly with the themes of Loki, which in Season 1 was all about how Loki himself was this trickster god trapped in an endless cycle of death and rebirth, and how time itself was portrayed as an endless causal loop, with the multiverse expanding and contracting due to the actions of He Who Remains and countless other Kangs. There’s even an ouroboros symbol on O.B.’s jumpsuit if you look closely.

That’s just one of the many Easter eggs, little details, and hidden Marvel Cinematic Universe references you might have missed in the first trailer for Loki Season 2. In our latest Marvel video, we break them all down for over 25 minutes, including all the other loops that we’ve found in the MCU, how the TVA has changed since Loki Season 1, and where this new variant of Kang, Victor Timely, comes from and what his plan might be:

‘Pee-wee Herman’ Star Paul Reubens Remembered By Hollywood: ‘Paul Was Such a Genius’

    [ad_1]

The comedy world is reeling from the shocking news that Paul Reubens — beloved by generations of fans as the man who created and starred as Pee-wee Herman in films, television series, stage plays, and comedy specials — has died after a long but very private battle with cancer. Reubens was only 70 years old.

Tributes to Reubens have already begun flooding social media. Longtime late night talk show host Conan O’Brien wrote that “no tweet can capture the magic, generosity, artistry, and devout silliness of Paul Reubens” and added that “his surreal comedy and unrelenting kindess were a gift to us all.” He closed with “Damn, this hurts,” which pretty much sums it up.

Fellow late-night star Jimmy Kimmel wrote that Paul Reubens was “like no one else – a brilliant and original comedian who made kids and their parents laugh at the same time … my family and I will miss him.”

Paul Feig, creator of Freaks and Geeks, and the director of BridesmaidsSpy, and Ghostbusters called the loss “devastating” and noted that Reubens was “so original and hilarious. And such a sweet man too. This is a huge loss for comedy.”

Natasha Lyonne, who appeared on Pee-wee’s Playhouse when she was a young child actor, wrote “Thank you for my career & your forever friendship all these years & for teaching us what a true original is.”

Reubens leaves behind an enormous legacy and legions of fans well beyond the worlds of Hollywood and television. Here are a few other tributes:

Paul Reubens, Pee-wee Herman Actor, Dies at 70

    [ad_1]

Terrible news from the world of pop culture: Paul Reubens, best known and beloved as the character Pee-wee Herman from movies and shows, has died. The news was announced on the official Pee-wee Herman Facebook page, where a note read:

Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness. Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.

An attached image of Reubens included a quote from the actor that read “Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years. I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you.” Reubens was only 70 years old when he passed away.

Born in 1952, Reubens got his start in comedy in the 1970s. He appeared several times on The Gong Show, and then joined the famed L.A. improv comedy troupe the Groundlings. But it was the character of Pee-wee Herman that made Reubens famous. In the early 1980s, he began developing Pee-wee along with several Groundlings colleagues (including future Saturday Night Live star Phil Hartman). He debuted in a live stage show called The Pee-wee Herman Show, which quickly became a cult hit in the area. Pee-wee then got an HBO special and his first movie, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, in 1985.

Directed by a young Tim Burton, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure became a surprise smash, more than quadrupling its budget at the box office, and become a favorite on home video. Among many iconic moments, Reubens dancing to the song “Tequila” became one of the most memorable and imitated scenes of any 1980s movie.

A sequel followed in 1988, Big Top Pee-wee, but besides the original movie, Reubens and Pee-wee were probably most famous for the TV series Pee-wee’s Playhouse, which became a fixture of Saturday morning television all through the 1980s. Surreal and hilarious, the show saw Reubens hanging out in his Playhouse with an assortment of colorful characters; the show ran for 45 episodes from 1986 to 1990.

After a lengthy hiatus, Pee-wee returned in the 2010s, first on Broadway in a popular play, The Pee-wee Herman Show, and then in a new movie for Netflix titled Pee-wee’s Big Holiday. This turned out to be Reubens’ final film role.

In his Facebook statement, Reubens noted he has been battling cancer privately for six years. That coincides pretty closely with the release of Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, and does explain why Reubens never followed it with more Pee-wee shows or films, despite enormous interest from fans. It’s shocking news to hear he’s gone now, and at such a young age.

  • Donald Glover to Write ‘Lando‘ Disney+ Series

Donald Glover to Write ‘Lando‘ Disney+ Series

    [ad_1]

As if starring in the title role of the upcoming Disney+ series Lando wasn’t enough, triple-threat Donald Glover will be writing the series too.

Initially, the project was being written by Justin Simien of Dear White People and the new Haunted Mansion movie. According to Above the Line, Glover and his brother Stephen will write the entire series, replacing Simien.

When the show was first announced, it wasn’t made clear which version of Lando would appear in the show — either Billy Dee Williams from the original films or Glover from Solo: A Star Wars Story — but they note that this indicates we should expect the show to be about the younger Lando “as it’s unlikely that [Glover’d] write the script for another actor to play the smooth-talking smuggler.”

Simen recently addressed the status of the Lando show, which was first announced back in 2020, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter:

I am attached, I think, but I don’t really know. (Laughs.) The last thing I was told was that they loved it but needed to put a pin in it until they could figure out everybody’s availability. I haven’t investigated further, but I’m not an idiot. I’m not alone in that experience. But I can’t help but wonder, ‘Am I too Black? Am I too queer? And people just don’t want to say that?’ Because it seems like I develop things with these companies and they just never happen for reasons unknown.

Now it seems that Simien is out and the Glovers are in. If Donald Glover’s work on the critically-acclaimed Atlanta is anything to go off of, it seems like a phenomenal fit.

Back in April, Glover said of a potential Lando series that he was “not interested in doing anything that is going to be a waste of my time or just a paycheck. I would much rather spend time with people I enjoy. It just has to be the right thing, which I think it could be. Lando is definitely somebody I’d like to hang out with. We’re talking about it. That’s as much as I can say.”

The next Star Wars series, Ahsoka, premieres on Disney+ on August 23.
