A Huge Star Wars Character Returned on This Week’s ‘Ahsoka’

    [ad_1]

The following post contains SPOILERS for Episode 4 of Star Wars: Ahsoka, “Fallen Jedi.” Which come to think of it was probably a pretty big clue.

A wise Jedi once said “No one’s ever really gone.” That guy knew what he was talking about; cause it is really true in Star Wars — as viewers of Ahsoka were most definitely reminded this week.

Much of the plot of Ahsoka through four episodes has been about the possible returns of Admiral Thrawn and Ezra Bridger, crucial characters from earlier Star Wars media, most notably the animated series Star Wars: Rebels. But we’re now four episodes into Ahsoka, and neither one has actually appeared onscreen (unless you count a brief appearance by Ezra in the form of an old holographic message he left to his friend Sabine). No, instead, the end of Episode 4 featured the return of a much more central figure in the Star Wars mythos… Anakin Skywalker, as played by Hayden Christensen.

READ MORE: Every Star Wars Movie Ranked From Worst to Best

Anakin’s appearance was extremely brief; it was the cliffhanger to get you to come back next week to find out just what is happening to Ahsoka. After being thrown from a cliff by Ray Stevenson’s Baylan Skoll, Ahsoka awakens in a strange, starry realm, where Anakin tells her “I didn’t expect to see you so soon.” That’s about all he says before the music begins to strike some darker notes and the episode cuts to credits.

This is Christensen’s second recent return to Star Wars after he had not appeared as Anakin for over 15 years, since 2005’s Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. (He previously reprised his role as Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader in 2022’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+.) As for where he and Ahsoka are at the end of the episode, we will presumably find out next week, but it all seems very similar to the “World Between Worlds” that supposedly connects all of time and space together, and was first introduced on Star Wars: Rebels — which, again, has been extremely crucial to the cast and backstory of the entire Ahsoka storyline.

  • Marvel Delays Multiple TV Shows

    Marvel Delays Multiple TV Shows

    [ad_1]

There may be a “sacred timeline” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but releases dates are not so sacred over there.

With both the writers’ and actors’ strikes lingering on with no end in sight, Marvel has pushed back a slew of their upcoming Disney+ TV series. Almost all of their shows coming in the short term have been delayed. Echo, spinning out of the recent Hawkeye series, and starring the vigilante character who has appeared opposite Daredevil and worked with the Avengers in Marvel Comics, will now premiere in January of 2024. The show was previously scheduled to debut at the end November.

The WandaVision spinoff Agatha, meanwhile, has now been pushed back to the fall of 2024. The series has already gone through two different titles: Agatha: House of Harkness and Agatha: Coven of Chaos. The series stars Kathryn Hahn, reprising her role as the scheming witch from WandaVision.

There are changes in Marvel’s animation lineup as well. X-Men ’97, a sequel series to the popular X-Men: The Animated Series of the 1990s was originally expected this fall, and will now premiere in early 2024 instead. The show features many of the original voice actors from the ’90s X-Men show.

At the moment, Season 2 of Loki is still scheduled for an October 6 premiere. And you will get at least one more Marvel series before the end of the year; Season 2 of What If…? is expected to premiere around the holiday season. The show features animated alternate interpretations of previously told Marvel stories. But things after that could get rough, especially if the strikes continue much longer. Several MCU series, including the highly anticipated Daredevil: Born Again, were still in the midst of shooting when the strikes began. They will need to resume production whenever they are resolved, and then go through post-production before they are ready to premiere.

Late Night Hosts Teaming For Podcast to Support Striking Staffers

    [ad_1]

During the height of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, many people in the industry are looking for work. Five late-night hosts have managed to find a new short-term gig: Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, and John Oliver are all getting together over at Spotify with their own show. The aptly-titled Strike Force Five features these late-night hosts talking about the strike, the industry, and just sharing general banter. The series is a Spotify exclusive, running for at least 12 episodes. The show features all of the hosts for every episode, however, it’s hosted by a single individual on a rotating basis.

The initial seed of the idea began when all of the late-night hosts got together on Zoom to discuss the results of the work stoppages in their lives, as well as various other issues centered around the strike. Eventually, they realized that it could be a solid foundation for a show. Spotify says it “was a series of hilarious and compelling conversations. Now, Colbert, Fallon, Kimmel, Meyers and Oliver invite you to listen in on their once-private chats on this all-new podcast.”

Strike Force Five launches on August 30, and it’ll be available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and most other big podcast outlets. While the show promises to be at least 12 episodes, it’s supposed to run for the duration of the strike. You can listen to it here.

  • ‘Star Wars: Ahsoka’ Is Focusing On the Wrong Character

‘Star Wars: Ahsoka’ Is Focusing On the Wrong Character

    [ad_1]

A hero with a crisis of faith, who discovers the secret to a sinister plot to conquer the galaxy, before setting off on a perilous quest to save a missing friend. This quest will force the hero to confront their self-doubts and evolve their powers in order to achieve a hard-fought victory.

There is a character who embodies all of those characteristics on Star Wars: AhsokaBut it’s not Ahsoka.

Sure, Ahsoka Tano is onscreen much of the time in the latest Star Wars series. The show begins with her discovering an ancient map in an abandoned temple. (In Star Wars, when in doubt, have everyone chase an ancient map.) It quickly becomes clear, though, that despite standing at the center of the frame, Ahsoka is a static character. Through three episodes of the show, she has displayed few emotions and possesses no motivation beyond the fact that she is (sort of) a Jedi, and stopping bad guys is what Jedi do.

READ MORE: Who Is the Mysterious New Inquisitor on Star Wars: Ahsoka?

Ahsoka’s quest ropes in Sabine Wren, her former Padawan and a member of the ragtag crew of heroes who were central to the animated series Star Wars: Rebels. Ahsoka betrays none of her feelings about her quest to find and stop Admiral Thrawn, a former Imperial baddie who is presumed dead but apparently trapped in another galaxy far, far away.

Ahsoka is confident, an almost unbeatable fighter, and cool as hell. She’s basically perfect. Sabine, on the other hand, has lost her way following another presumed death; her friend Ezra, who was “killed” defeating Thrawn. (Who didn’t actually die, which almost certainly means Ezra didn’t either.) As portrayed by Natasha Liu Bordizzo as a feisty but troubled young woman, Sabine needs to repair her broken relationship with Ahsoka, resume her Jedi training, and trust in her potential and abilities in order to find Ezra and defeat Thrawn. If ever there was a classic Star Wars hero, it’s Sabine Wren.

    STAR WARS: AHSOKA
    Lucasfilm Ltd.

This week’s episode, “Time to Fly,” even began with a scene right out of the original Star Wars, with Ahsoka as older master teaching Sabine, the young student, to trust in her feelings and to use the Force. Ahsoka gives Sabine a helmet with an eye-covering visor to wear during a lightsaber sparring session. It’s almost exact mirror of the scene in A New Hope between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker with the training droid — except here, the nominal main character, Ahsoka, is the one giving the lesson rather than receiving it.

It’s possible to make a Star Wars show about a wise, older master, who is utterly assured in their abilities but struggles to train a new student. In fact, that sounds like a fairly interesting Star Wars series! But that’s not really what Ahsoka is. If Ahsoka feels anything about Sabine’s training, their long relationship, she doesn’t share it with the audience in any way. Rosario Dawson is an unreadable presence as Ahsoka. She seems to spend the entire series standing around glaring stoically at the other characters with her arms folded, saying little and suggesting less.

Instead — or maybe because of that — Ahsoka keeps emphasizing Sabine’s struggles. The audience has a much better grasp of what she wants out of this journey, what she needs to do in order to succeed. Admittedly, I haven’t watched much of Star Wars: The Clone Wars or Rebels, so my experience with Ahsoka is extremely limited. Perhaps if you’ve followed the character through those various earlier adventures, her mindset seems clearer and her rationale for undertaking this quest is obvious. To someone like me who hasn’t seen those shows, she just seems like a generic Jedi doing generic Jedi stuff. And Ahsoka has made no attempt to help me understand her better.

In fact, Sabine is basically the only character I feel like I understand, because the villains of the show are just as opaque as Ahsoka. What, for example, does Ray Stevenson’s Baylan Skoll want? The show did reveal that he was a Jedi who survived Order 66. But why does he now want to bring back the very Empire that destroyed the Jedi and his earlier way of life? Presumably we will learn the answer to that question before the end of the series, but for now he’s just this giant question mark at the center of a series whose title character is also a giant question mark — meaning we are watching a show about two quiet, mysterious figures with unclear goals and vague motivations.

Who is the show really about? This issue of wandering focus has become a recurring theme in Star Wars’ Disney+ series. The Book of Boba Fett inserted half a season of The Mandalorian into its own show, and almost completely forgot its title character for a while in the process. Then when Mando got his own show back for a third season, it barely seemed to care about him, focusing instead on supporting players like Bo-Katan and even guest stars like X-wing pilot Carson Teva, who spent one Mandalorian episode hunting down a hidden conspiracy within the leadership of the New Republic.

    STAR WARS: AHSOKA
    Lucasfilm Ltd.

Watching Star Wars television days, it feels like the creators are laser-focused on an extremely narrow segment of their audience who has seen absolutely every Star Wars movie and show and cartoon, and read every Star Wars comic book and novel, and just want obscure stories that fill in gaps in Star Wars history and lore. Which, I guess if you’re into obscure Star Wars history and lore, can be great. For the rest of us, these series are starting to feel like the footnotes to stories we don’t know. And so far, Ahsoka seems like it would have made a lot more sense if it was called Star Wars: Sabine.

  • ‘The Idol’ Canceled After One Controversial Season

‘The Idol’ Canceled After One Controversial Season

    [ad_1]

The Idol only ran on HBO for five episodes. (The show was originally greenlit for a six-episode run, but during an extensive reworking of the series during production, it was trimmed down to five.) Maybe given its reception and subject matter, that’s for the better.

The show starred Lily-Rose Depp and Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd. The show’s plot centers around Depp’s character, Jocelyn, a pop star who grows increasingly enmeshed with Tesfaye’s character, Tedros. Jocelyn had suffered a nervous breakdown and is trying to put her struggling music career back together. Tedros owns a nightclub and appears to be a powerful man in the industry. Eventually, it becomes clear that he’s also a cult leader and an extremely dangerous presence.

Sam Levinson, creator of the HBO teen drama Euphoria, and Tesfaye worked together to cook this series up, and it definitely has that feel. Unfortunately, critics also point out that it’s almost unnecessarily dark. Some felt it didn’t really do a great job satirizing the industry it’s trying to exploit; that instead it was just as mean-spirited as the world it was trying to depict.

READ MORE: Everything Coming to Streaming on Max Next Month

After a first season filled with controversy — and rumors earlier this summer that the show would not return for a second season, which HBO denied at the time — the series is now officially done. Here was a channel spokesman’s comment on the news:

The Idol was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response. After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.

Additionally, it seems that some of the people behind the show had mixed understandings of what was intended from the start. Moses Sumney thought it was a limited series, while Da’Vine Joy Randolph had assumed there would definitely be a second season. The show sits at 19 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Salaar, Prabhas’s highly anticipated pan-Indian film, has taken the Indian cinema scene by storm, sparking immense anticipation among moviegoers. While the official stance from the Salaar team has consistently denied any direct link to the KGF series, inside sources are hinting at a more complex connection. According to reports, the first half of Salaar is dedicated to exploring the narrative of Prithviraj Sukumaran, with the actor enjoying more screen time than Prabhas in this segment. However, from the pre-interval point onward, Prabhas takes the reins, signifying the expansion of Prashant Neel’s KGF universe. ‘Nancy Drew’ Producer On the CW Executives: ‘They Suck’

    [ad_1]

Nancy Drew has been running on The CW for 4 years. That’s coming to a swift end, basically out of nowhere, and of the show’s key producers is not at all happy.

The CW was acquired by a company called Nexstar recently, and it seems like they have a very different approach to how to run the network. The CW was well-known for almost never canceling shows, even if they weren’t enormous hits in the ratings. They’d sell them off to Netflix, after creating the shows with the help of their owners, Paramount and Warner Bros. Now that The CW has been separated from those studios — which both have their own streaming services anyway (Paramount+ and Max, respectively), the channel’s business model has drastically changed.

READ MORE: 10 Popular TV Shows That Were Almost Canceled Way Too Soon

The first few shows canceled by Nexstar were given an ample amount of time to wrap up. This included things like the reboot of Charmed and Legacies. On the other hand, shows like Nancy Drew had absolutely no time to prepare for the end. Instead, they were told about 3/4 of the way through their fourth season, meaning that they’ll have to turn their season finale into a finale for the whole show.

Larry Teng, who worked on Nancy Drew as both an executive producer and a director, posted a lengthy thread on Twitter, where he laid out the story behind the Nancy Drew series finale. As he put it, “imagine if you watched the finale without us knowing it would be the last episode of Nancy Drew ever. Because that’s what almost happened.”

He added that they only learned the show was canceled because its star Kennedy McMann, had landed a role on another series, and they were trying to figure out how to schedule everything — at which point the CW told them “Oh we’re not picking you up … the show is too expensive.” At that point the writers were already writing the season finale, which became the series finale.

“What a f—ing s—y way of telling us we were getting canceled … I’ve been pissed at the upper brass of this new CW since November. They suck,” Teng added.

  • ‘Percy Jackson’ TV Show Reveals First Look Teaser, Premiere Date

‘Percy Jackson’ TV Show Reveals First Look Teaser, Premiere Date

    [ad_1]

The Percy Jackson series was supposed to be one of the biggest movie franchises of its era. Based on the mega bestselling novels by Rick Riordan, Fox had hoped it would become their Harry Potter or Hunger Games young adult tentpole series. But while the first film, Percy Jackson and the Olympains: The Lightning Thief became a solid hit, the sequel, Percy Jackson and the Olympains: Sea of Monsters sunk to the box-office bottom. That was the end of the Percy Jackson movies, leaving multiple Riordan books unadapted.

But when Disney acquired Fox, they also got the rights to Percy Jackson, and they sensed it could work even better as a television series. (And given that it’s a long and sprawling story you could drag out across many seasons, they might be right. So they initially announced a Percy Jackson TV show for Disney+ back in January of 2022. And now, about 18 months later, they’re ready to reveal the first look at the show — which is titled Percy Jackson and the Olympians — and to announce the series’ premiere date.

They also debuted the first teaser for the show, which you can watch below, and gives you your first peek at Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson:

Disney’s press release touts the fact that Rick Riordan “worked closely with the creative team and showrunners Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz to bring his books to life and deliver a series that stays true to his vision for these heroic characters that millions of book fans know and love.” Riordan also co-wrote the show’s first two episodes, which were directed by The Muppets and Muppets Most Wanted’s James Bobin.

Here is the series’ official synopsis:

“Percy Jackson and the Olympians” tells the fantastical story of a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who’s just coming to terms with his newfound divine powers when the sky god, Zeus, accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. With help from his friends Grover and Annabeth, Percy must embark on an adventure of a lifetime to find it and restore order to Olympus.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians premieres on Disney+ on December 20.

Original Blue Ranger Rejoins Cast of ‘Power Rangers’

    [ad_1]

Hot off the heels of his return in the 30th anniversary Power Rangers special, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Once & Always, original series star David Yost is returning to the cast of the show full time. The original Blue Ranger, also known as Billy Cranston, will lead a new group of Rangers against the return of none other than Lord Zedd, one of the classic villains from the original Power Rangers show.

While the main antagonist of season one was Rita Repulsa, she was later retconned as just one of Lord Zedd’s generals. That means that Lord Zedd is essentially the big bad of the Power Rangers universe.

Simon Bennett, the executive producer of Power Rangers, spoke with EW to talk about Billy Cranston’s return on the new Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury.

We felt it would be a meaningful landmark for fans to have David return to the show in a significant role, playing a mentor, and on a personal level, it was a thrill to be working with the O.G. Blue Ranger. David’s calm and positive spirit kept us all grounded and reminded us of the Ranger legacy we were striving to do justice to.

  • Single Mom Sent $10K to Scammer Posing as ‘Stranger Things’ Star

Single Mom Sent $10K to Scammer Posing as ‘Stranger Things’ Star

    [ad_1]

Sometimes, being a fan gives you a lot: Happiness, pleasure, a sense of community. And sometimes, it just sucks really bad.

Here is a cautionary tale for you: A Stranger Things fan named McKala claims that she was catfished by an online scammer who tricked her into thinking he was actor Dacre Montgomery, who plays the role of Billy on hit TV show.

As she details in a YouTube video (which you can watch below), the scammer claimed that in order to break up with his own girlfriend (the real Montgomery is in a relationship with model Liv Pollock), she needed to send him money. The woman claims she eventually sent $10,000 to the person she believed was Montgomery.

READ MORE: Stranger Things Haunted House Coming to Halloween Horror Nights

McKala, who is a single mother from Kentucky, said she joined a forum for artists, where someone began chatting with her, and then claimed he was Montgomery. She says the scammer earned her trust by telling her to tune in to Stranger Things for a specific episode the night before the Billy character returned and sent her poetry like the kind Montgomery had previously published. As for why a working actor in Hollywood would need money, the scammer told McKala that his finances were controlled by his girlfriend, who held their own money in a joint account. The victim of this scam ultimately divorced her husband amidst all the deception. (Experts call this a “romance scam.”)

Word to the wise: If anyone sends you private messages and claims to be someone famous, never under any circumstances believe them. I know of no documented example of an actor from a popular Netflix series actually demanding $10,000 from a fan — but I know of plenty of examples of this sort of behavior from scammers. A few years ago a fan at a WWE event jumped the guardrail and attacked wrestler Seth Rollins, supposedly because a scammer had convinced the fan that he was Rollins, and then had him send him hundreds of dollars in gift cards. (Why anyone would think Seth Rollins, who makes millions of dollars a year and is married to another WWE superstar who also makes millions of dollars, would need a gift card for a couple hundred bucks is beyond me, but that’s neither here nor there.)

You can watch the whole story of the Stranger Things catfishing scam below. Stranger Things is expected to return for a fifth and final season on Netflix at some point in the next few years.
