‘Stranger Thing’ Prequel Casts Young Hopper, Joyce, Vecna Actors

    [ad_1]

Rehearsals are now underway in the U.K. for Stranger Things: The First Shadow, an official, canonical prequel to the hit Netflix series that will premiere soon on the London stage. Netflix today announced the cast of the show — which features younger versions of Stranger Things characters like Hopper, Joyce, and the kid who later grows up to become Vecna, Henry Creel. (I guess in the parlance of Stranger Things’ ’80s nostalgia obsessed vibe, we might unofficially dub this thing Stranger Things Babies.)

Oscar Lloyd Jr. at left above plays the young Hopper, while Isabella Pappas in the middle is the young Joyce. On the right is Christopher Buckley, who plays Bob Newby. (On the main Stranger Things TV series, Bob is played by Sean Astin.)

The First Shadow was announced in March of this year. At that time, here was how Netflix officially described the premise and setting of the play:

Hawkins, 1959: a regular town with regular worries. Young Jim Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob Newby’s sister won’t take his radio show seriously and Joyce Maldonado just wants to graduate and get the hell out of town. When new student Henry Creel arrives, his family finds that a fresh start isn’t so easy… and the shadows of the past have a very long reach. Brought to life by a multi-award-winning creative team, who take theatrical storytelling and stagecraft to a whole new dimension, this gripping new adventure will take you right back to the beginning of the Stranger Things story – and may hold the key to the end.

Here were the Duffer brothers’ statement on the announcement of the show’s cast:

The cast of ‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow’ is nothing short of phenomenal. These actors brilliantly explore the early days of many fan favorites — including Hopper, Joyce, Bob, Henry and Dr. Brenner — while also bringing new characters to vivid life. We couldn’t be more thrilled and can’t wait for you to meet them all live on stage. See you in London, nerds!

The first performance of Stranger Things: The First Shadow is scheduled for November 17 at the Phoenix Theatre in London. The fifth and final season of Stranger Things was in development when the writers’ strike began last summer. So it is still quite a ways off at this point.

Like a god of Greek myth, Percy Jackson just refuses to fade into obscurity. He’s appeared in multiple series of books by author Rick Riordan, and to date, he’s starred in two theatrical features: Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. While the film series stopped there, the character will now get new life on streaming, with Disney+ turning Percy Jackson and the Olympians into a television series.

  • Hayden Christensen Reveals Reaction to ‘Ahsoka’ Return

Hayden Christensen Reveals Reaction to ‘Ahsoka’ Return

    [ad_1]

For many, seeing Hayden Christensen return to the role of Anakin Skywalker was a huge deal. That’s even more true for the actor himself. The character is the defining role of his career so far, and one of the most iconic characters in Star Wars itself.

It’s more than a little bit cathartic to see Anakin return on Star Wars: Ahsoka so late in the timeline, even if this Anakin just exists as a ghost or a memory or whatever he was supposed to be. Either way, it gave Ahsoka the guidance she needed to continue fighting and to realize that she could carve out her own path in life. Dwelling in the past will only lead to her downfall.

In a short behind-the-scenes featurette posted to YouTube, Ahsoka series creator Dave Filoni recently talked about his idea to bring Anakin back on the show.

“You know, as I was figuring out the story for Ahsoka, I just really thought, ‘Well, there’s an opportunity, could bring Anakin and Ahsoka together.’ It’s just awesome,” he explained.

Rosario Dawson also spoke about the history she had with Christensen before they were reunited to work on the show together. They worked together on a 2003 film called Shattered Glass, but they’d also been in touch for years:

I met Hayden when I was 16. We were in an acting school together over a summer. To have that kind of history with him, it really was like seeing my old friend.

Christensen himself also talked about how amazing it was to be back in his Jedi garb, once again wielding a lightsaber.

Putting on the Anakin costume, getting to wear those Jedi robes, it kind of blows your mind every time. I just feel very grateful.

Anakin on ‘Ahsoka’: Is He Real?

This week’s episode of Star Wars: Ahsoka featured the full return of Anakin Skywalker, but it might have raised as many questions as it answered. Was this really Anakin’s Force Ghost? Was it a vision or hallucination? Could we see Anakin Skywalker again? Why did he start as Anakin and then become Darth Vader?

Like we said, a lot of questions. For the answers, check out our latest Star Wars video. In it, we go into the meaning of the Anakin sequence, what it means for the rest of Ahsoka, and why the title character is dressing in a very different way after her encounter with “Anakin.” We also go into Ahsoka and Darth Vader’s battle back on Star Wars Rebels, and how it reflects on their fight and conversations on this episode. Watch our full video below:

  • ‘Fables’ Creator Puts Series in Public Domain

‘Fables’ Creator Puts Series in Public Domain

    [ad_1]

Although no longer an ongoing imprint at DC Comics, the Vertigo Comics line is responsible for some of the most popular and impactful comic book stories of the late 20th and early 21st century. Vertigo gave us Preacher and Y: The Last Man. It became the home of Neil Gaimain’s The Sandman during the later years of its run, and was the publisher of most of its spinoffs and sequel series. (The same goes for Doom Patrol and Hellblazer.) You’ve probably heard of all of those comics even if you never read them, because all of the aforementioned series have been turned into films or TV shows.

One of the most acclaimed and popular of all Vertigo series, Fables, never got a screen adaptation, but it’s not for lack of trying. Several different TV shows were attempted, and about eight years ago, X-Men: First Class writer Jane Goldman was brought in to write a script for a Fables movie. None came to fruition, but there was a Fables video game a few years ago.

The man who created Fables is Bill Willingham, who wrote every issue of Fables as well as many other Fables spinoffs and tie-ins during it 20+ year run that started at Vertigo in 2002. But now, in a press release he posted to his Substack, Willingham announced he has taken a drastic step: He says he is putting Fables into the public domain.

READ MORE: Actors Who Turned Down Major DC Roles

You can (and should) read Willingham’s entire post at his Substack, but the main source of this bold and surprising move is Willingham’s frustration with DC, and particularly with the company’s current corporate leadership. “At one time the Fables properties were in good hands, and now, by virtue of attrition and employee replacement, the Fables properties have fallen into bad hands,” Willingham explains.

He goes on to cite some of the examples of his dealings with the current regime at DC, with issues stemming from relatively minor (allegations of delayed royalties payments, or their forgetting to consult him on matters like the design of new Fables trade paperbacks) to more substantial problems. Here is how he lays out some of his biggest concerns, including trying to “strong arm the ownership of Fables” from him:

First they tried to strong arm the ownership of Fables from me. When Mark Doyle and Dan Didio first approached me with the idea of bringing Fables back for its 20th anniversary (both gentlemen since fired from DC), during the contract negotiations for the new issues, their legal negotiators tried to make it a condition of the deal that the work be done as work for hire, effectively throwing the property irrevocably into the hands of DC. When that didn’t work their excuse was, “Sorry, we didn’t read your contract going into these negotiations. We thought we owned it.” … More recently, during talks to try to work out our many differences, DC officers admitted that their interpretation of our publishing agreement, and the following media rights agreement, is that they could do whatever they wanted with the property.

Since he cannot unilaterally end his deal with DC, Willingham says he decided to do the one thing he could do, which was to put Fables into the public domain. Which would mean that while he cannot make new Fables material (at least not without DC’s involvement), anyone else on the planet can, without his or DC’s permission. (He does say creators “might get my blessing, depending on your plans.”)

Although comic books are not covered by the same deals (or lack thereof) that spawned the ongoing writers’ strike in Hollywood, it’s easy to see Willingham’s beef as an extension of the same issues: Corporations with enormous (and, in the eyes of the writers’, unfair) control over properties created by others, along with an undue share of the profits. The worlds of film and TV have radically evolved in the last few years, leaving many writers feeling like they are not getting an adequate piece of the pie.

At the end of his statement, Willingham writes “It was my absolute joy and pleasure to bring you Fables stories for the past twenty years. I look forward to seeing what you do with it.”

‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Sequel Series Coming to Audible

    [ad_1]

While it may not be the full audiovisual experience, a Buffy the Vampire Slayer audio drama is still way cool. It’s been a while since we got any proper new Buffy content, with the original series only running from 1997 to 2003. Even with that ending, there were still tons of character threads and occasional plot holes that could have been addressed to make a more complete story. Hopefully, this sequel audio series, which will be on Audible, does some work to deal with that.

The new series is called Slayers: A Buffyverse Story. It was written by Amber Benson, known for playing Tara in the Buffy TV series. She’s partnered with Christopher Golden, who has written a number of novels taking place within the Buffy universe. The voice cast returning from the Buffy TV series includes James Marsters, Charisma Carpenter, Anthony Head, Juliet Landau, Emma Caulfield Ford, Benson, James Charles Leary and Danny Strong. Sarah Michelle Gellar is not in the show but there’s a good reason for that: In the series, Spike winds up meeting with a Slayer from a reality where Buffy never existed.

The upcoming scripted audio original picks up 10 years after the events of the final episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Since then, Spike has gone deep undercover in Los Angeles, convincing the forces of darkness that he’s back to his evil ways. When his cover is compromised by sixteen-year-old Indira Nunnally (Hayes), Spike finds himself on baby-slayer-sitting duty once more. While he attempts to track down a watcher for his eager new protégé, their paths collide with the veteran Slayer of a parallel reality where Buffy Summers never existed…a reality where Cordelia Chase is the one-and-only Slayer. She needs Spike’s help with a classic big bad terrorizing her world…his old flame, Drusilla.

‘Star Wars’ ‘Lando’ TV Show Is Now a Movie

    [ad_1]

The ever-evolving spinoff for Donald Glover’s Lando appears to have evolved yet again. First teased as a TV series for Disney+ that would have been written by Haunted Mansion filmmaker Justin Simien, a few months ago it was revealed that Glover himself had assumed the writing duties on the series, along with his brother Stephen. Now Stephen Glover has revealed that the Lando show is actually a Lando movie.

On the Pablo Torre Finds Out podcast, Stephen Glover said of Lando:

It’s not even a show…the idea right now is to do a movie. Right now, because of the strike, it’s kind of like telephone, all of the information.

According to Variety, Lucasfilm then confirmed that the Lando TV show had since become a film. (Their report does not specify whether the film would be intended for Disney+ or if it would get a theatrical release before going to streaming.)

    Donald Glover as Lando

READ MORE: Star Wars: Ahsoka Is Focused on the Wrong Character

Glover first played Lando in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, a prequel film that chronicled Han Solo’s early years, and revealed the origin of his friendships with Chewbacca and Lando, who was previously played in the original Star Wars trilogy by Billy Dee Williams. (Williams then reprised the role as an older Lando in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.)

Even with this news, it is still not entirely clear what will be the next Star Wars movie to debut in theaters. There are at least four different film projects in development at Lucasfilm that we know about, including a film directed by Taika Waititi, a prequel about the earliest days of the Jedi by James Mangold, a movie by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and a movie that will combine the disparate stories from the Disney+ Star Wars shows by Dave Filoni. But none of these projects have confirmed release dates.

‘Ahsoka’ Director Discusses Show’s Huge ‘Star Wars’ Return

    [ad_1]

The following post contains spoilers for Episode 4 of Star Wars: Ahsoka. (Obviously.)

For many who have been following Ahsoka’s saga since the beginning, the end of the fourth episode of the series held a reunion years in the making. Star Wars: Ahsoka, streaming on Disney+, stars Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano. She’s the  former padawan of Anakin Skywalker and is doing her best to uphold his legacy after the fall of the Empire.

At the end of Episode 4, while trying to keep a map to Grand Admiral Thrawn out of the wrong hands, Ahsoka ends up seemingly dead. She finds herself in the “World Between Worlds,” a mysterious Star Wars realm beyond time and space, where she encounters her former master, played once again by Hayden Christensen. While it seems like a happy reunion, there are two indications that something more sinister may being on. First of all, Anakin is wearing black robes like he was in Revenge of the Sith. Secondly, during the fade to black, the “Imperial March” plays on the soundtrack. An ominous sign of things to come, perhaps?

He also revealed that when directing Christensen in the scene, they “talked about what it’s like for him to be seeing Ahsoka after all this time, that it’s a reunion for them. And I just told him, ‘It’s like you haven’t seen your daughter in two years. She’d gone off to college and you’re seeing her again and she’s like a different person but still your daughter’”

  • ‘Murder, She Wrote’ Will Become a Movie

‘Murder, She Wrote’ Will Become a Movie

    [ad_1]

When it comes to reboots of popular franchises, there’s no mystery: Hollywood is forever on the hunt for a sure thing, and a well-established brand, with entrenched fans (and thus as large potential customer base) makes for as close to a winning bet as you can get.

And so almost everything made by Hollywood these days is based on something else. Movies based on old movies, TV series continuing old TV series — and sometimes movies based on old TV series. That brings us to this: The news that the long-running mystery series Murder, She Wrote is now going to be a movie.

The original Murder, She Wrote, which ran for a slightly mind-boggling 264 episodes (plus several TV movies) from 1984 to 1996 starred Angela Lansbury as Jessica Fletcher, a writer of mystery novels and an amateur sleuth who winds up solving murder cases in her spare time. The show was one of CBS’ highest-rated dramas for much of its run, and remains a perennial favorite in syndication and other outlets.

READ MORE: TV Revivals So Bad They Ruined the Original Show

Lansbury passed away in 2022 at the age of 96, but now Variety says Universal is looking to relaunch Murder, She Wrote  as a film. Prior to the ongoing writers’ strike, they reportedly tapped Dumb Money screenwriters Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo to develop the material; after the strike is resolved, they will return to the project.

Detective fiction is one of those evergreen genres that never seems to go out of style. In recent years, even as mega-franchises have dominated the studios’ output, several sleuths have maintained a presence on the big screen. Rian Johnson turned Daniel Craig from James Bond into debonair detective Benoit Blanc in a series of Knives Out movies; at least one more is expected on Netflix. And Kenneth Branagh has directed himself in a trio of Hercule Poirot movies based on the famous Agatha Christie books; the most recent, A Haunting in Venice, opens in theaters this Friday.

It doesn’t take a world-class brain to see why, in this environment, a movie studio is trying to relaunch another iconic mystery franchise.

‘Ahsoka’ Episode 4: Anakin’s Return, Explained

    [ad_1]

The following post contains SPOILERS for Episode 4 of Star Wars: Ahsoka.

After foreshadowing the return of Thrawn or Ezra Bridger for four episodes, Ahsoka gave us a major twist instead: The return of Anakin Skywalker, who died in Return of the Jedi (or, if you want to be really technical about it, said goodbye to his life as Anakin and became Darth in Revenge of the Sith). But here he is, played by Hayden Christensen, in the final scene of this week’s Ahsoka.

So what’s going on here? What’s this mysterious dimension where Ahsoka finds herself and encounters Anakin? What’s its connection to the Force? And what does it mean for the future of the show, and for Star Wars as a whole? Is this really Anakin? Or some sort of illusion or trick? Is he alive or dead? The answers to all those questions are the subject of our latest Star Wars video, which breaks down this World Between Worlds, where it’s appeared previously and how it works, and theorizes how Anakin could have wound up here. Watch our breakdown below:

  • Godzilla Stomps Onto Television With ‘Monarch’ Trailer

Godzilla Stomps Onto Television With ‘Monarch’ Trailer

    [ad_1]

Apple TV+ is a solid streaming service with a couple of very good shows and even an Academy Award winner for Best Picture. With no new Ted Lasso episodes in the immediate future, though, they could definitely use a new signature program, something big and splashy. So how about a massive TV series starring Godzilla?

That’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which brings the big fire-breathing lizard to the small screen, along with an impressive cast that includes Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell, and Kiersey Clemons. The first trailer for the show is below, and it very strongly connects Monarch to the recent Godzilla (and Kong) films, and the shadowy organization known as Monarch tasked with protecting the world from them — while also confirming the series is not just about a bunch of scientists standing around looking at computer monitors; there’s some big kaiju action in here as well.

Check out the first Monarch trailer below:

READ MORE: 20 Movies You Never Knew Became TV Series

The scale of the show looks impressive, but there should be a solid story foundation behind it too; the series was developed by Chris Black and Matt Fraction, an outstanding comic book writer of series like The Invincible Iron ManCasanova, and Hawkeye. (The recent Hawkeye TV series was heavily inspired by his run on the comic.)

There are a bunch of new Monarch images as well:

Here is the series’ official synopsis:

Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco, and the shocking revelation that monsters are real, “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” tracks two siblings following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch. Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army Officer Lee Shaw (played by Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell), taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The dramatic saga — spanning three generations — reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters premieres on Apple TV+ on November 17. Two episodes premiere on that day, with new episodes weekly on Fridays through January 12.

  • Jimmy Fallon Accused of ‘Toxic Workplace’ at ‘The Tonight Show’

Jimmy Fallon Accused of ‘Toxic Workplace’ at ‘The Tonight Show’

    [ad_1]

Jimmy Fallon’s appeal as a talk-show host is based on his innate likability. He seems to get along with everyone, and always be in a sunny mood. That sort of life-of-the-party quality is invaluable on television, and it’s propelled Fallon from Saturday Night Live to movies to hosting NBC’s Late Night and then on to the crown jewel of the talk show world: The Tonight Show, which Fallon has hosted since 2014.

Of course, how someone presents themselves on TV isn’t necessarily how they carry themselves when the cameras are off. And a new report in Rolling Stone alleges that The Tonight Show under Fallon has been a “toxic workplace for years.” Their piece is long, and runs through multiple sorts of allegations, including claims of “erratic behavior” on Fallon’s part, so you’ll have to go there to read it all. But this sort of sums it up…

According to two current and 14 former employees, The Tonight Show has been a toxic workplace for years — far outside the boundaries of what’s considered normal in the high-pressure world of late-night TV. They say the ugly environment behind the scenes starts at the top with Fallon’s erratic behavior, and has trickled down to its ever-changing leadership teams — nine showrunners in the past nine years … Former employees describe The Tonight Show as a tense and “pretty glum atmosphere,” with some alleging they were belittled and intimidated by their bosses, including Fallon himself. Employees describe being afraid of Fallon’s “outbursts” and unexpected, inconsistent behavior.

In response to the report, NBC released a statement that read “We are incredibly proud of The Tonight Show, and providing a respectful working environment is a top priority… as in any workplace, we have had employees raise issues; those have been investigated and action has been taken where appropriate. As is always the case, we encourage employees who feel they have experienced or observed behavior inconsistent with our policies to report their concerns so that we may address them accordingly.”

The Tonight Show is currently on hiatus due to the ongoing writers and actors strikes in Hollywood. Fallon has yet to publicly respond to the allegations; his reps did not offer a comment to Rolling Stone for their report.

  • ‘That 70s Show’s Danny Masterson Sentenced to 30 Years in Prison

‘That 70s Show’s Danny Masterson Sentenced to 30 Years in Prison

    [ad_1]

Earlier this summer, former That ’70s Show star Danny Masterson was found guilty of forcible rape charges stemming from incidents involving two women. Today, Masterson was sentenced in Los Angeles to 30 years in prison. He is currently 47 years old.

Masterson was first arrested and charged with rape in the summer of 2020. The allegations against him initially surfaced in the midst of the #MeToo movement in 2017, when multiple women came forward with allegations that the longtime TV star, who played Hyde on all eight seasons of That ’70s Show and later appeared as one of the leads on the Netflix sitcom The Ranch, had drugged and raped them.

Masterson’s first trial related to the charges ended in a mistrial in the fall of 2022. The case was then retried this spring with a new jury. This time, Masterson was found guilty of two counts of forcible rape. The jury was split on charges related to a third woman, with eight jurors finding Masterson guilty and four voting not guilty after multiple rounds of deliberations.

Masterson continues to insist he is innocent of all charges. He was fired from The Ranch when the allegations first became public; the show concluded in 2020 but in the years since, Netflix has revived That ’70s Show as That ’90s Show. Nearly all of the original series’ stars except for Masterson have made supporting or guest appearances on the show.

  • ‘Ahsoka’ Reveals the Secret Behind Marrok’s Identity

‘Ahsoka’ Reveals the Secret Behind Marrok’s Identity

    [ad_1]

The following post contains spoilers for Episode 4 of Star Wars: Ahsoka.

While a lot of Disney+’s Ahsoka is pretty familiar, some of key players in the story still remain shrouded in mystery. That’s never been more true than after Episode 4.

The series so far tells the story of Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), Anakin Skywalker’s former apprentice. Unfortunately, her master fell to the dark side and became Darth Vader. Ahsoka remained valiant, and has grown into a powerful Jedi, now with her own apprentice. With that comes a lot of ire from the remains of the Galactic Empire.

Much of the threat on the show so far has come from a mysterious Inquisitor character named Marrok. Fans have been abuzz about who this character might actually be. He shows up and presents a solid challenge to our heroes; and his full mask and armor suggested he may secretly be an existing Star Wars character in disguise. With so much of Ahsoka focused on the search for missing Star Wars hero Ezra Bridger, many fans suspected Marrok could be Ezra turned to the Dark Side.

READ MORE: Why Ahsoka Is Named After the Wrong Star Wars Character

This week’s episode put an end to most of the mystery, when Ahsoka ends up bisecting Marrok with her saber. Marrok’s body emits a strange green smoke as he dies — which has only lead to further speculation, most of it centered around the character of Morgan Elsbeth, the witch who is trying to bring about the return of the evil Admiral Thrawn, and whose Force powers could explain the power behind Marrok’s smoky interior. We’ll know more in future weeks and on subsequent episodes of Ahsoka, if Marrok is forgotten or returns from the dead thanks to some strange Dark Side magic.
