  • You Can Own MacGruber’s Mazda Miata

You Can Own MacGruber’s Mazda Miata

    [ad_1]

There are movie props one would love to own — the sled from Citizen Kane, the title object from The Maltese Falcon — and then there are movie props one needs to own. And I would qualify the red 1996 Mazda Miata from the immortal comedy classic MacGruber in the latter category.

The car played a signature role in the 2010 film, and also appeared in the recent sequel series on Peacock. It was something of a trademark for the character, played by Will Forte, inspired by the old MacGyver TV series and first introduced in a series of sketches on Saturday Night LiveAlso, that car looked as cool as hell. I mean, it’s a Miata! What is cooler than that?

Well, one lucky person is going to get to own MacGruber’s Mazda Miata, as Will Forte himself is auctioning it off to support the non-profit organization the Pangea Network. In the official listing for the auction, Forte writes…

After we shot the MacGruber movie, the production said they were gonna sell the car, so I bought it. I parked it in my garage and it sat there until we used it again in the MacGruber TV series. After that, it sat on the lot for a few years until I picked it up about a month ago and parked it back in the garage.

(Tragically, the Miata’s removable stereo is not included, so you’ll have to find some other means to blast Toto’s “Rosanna” while you’re cruising down the highway in MacGruber’s ride.)

READ MORE: 15 Actors Who Criticized Their Own Shows

Now he has decided to find the Miata a good home for a good cause. And if the price goes high enough there are additional perks. Forte says if the car sells for more than $15,000, Forte will give the winner a page out of MacGruber’s immortal KFBR392 notebook. If it sells for $30,000, the winner gets to pick that page from the notebook themselves. For $50,000, Forte will personally deliver the car to you anywhere in the lower 48 United States. (Or you can pick it up in Los Angeles, and Forte will take you out to dinner.)

If by some chance the car goes for more than $100,000 Forte will, in his words “will fly you and a friend out to Albuquerque where we shot the MacGruber movie and TV series and spend the whole day giving you my own personal MacGruber tour. I’ll even bring the original MacGruber costume and wig for you to try on. Heck, wear it the whole day if you want!” I mean, that prize is arguably even more valuable than the car itself.

The auction ends on October 22 at 9PM ET. To those who are bidding, good luck. (Actually, no, I wish you all bad luck. Because I want this. Extremely badly. And if someone out there truly loves me they will buy me the MacGruber Miata. And if they don’t, I will be scrawling KFBR392 in a notebook unto eternity.)

A whole TV channel dedicated to ’90s favorites from Nickelodeon? Why, back in my day, we just called that Nickelodeon!

The initial lineup includes Rugrats, Kenan & KelDougRocko’s Modern Life, and of course Hey Arnold!

Pluto is also promoting the fact that the channel will also have special themed marathons, including a 24/7 Hey Arnold! block, and a “Rugrats takeover in early December.

Pluto TV’s 90s Kid Channel is already available at the company’s websites and apps. I really cannot stress enough how much Legends of the Hidden Temple should be on this channel. And also Get the Picture. And also Nickelodeon Guts. Oh, and Wild & Crazy Kids, that needs to be on there too. What Would You Do? where are those? Pluto TV, what you would do if I demanded What Would You Do? be added to this channel’s lineup? Like I said, I watched a lot of Nickelodeon as a child. Arguably too much!

  • Millie Bobby Brown Says She’s Ready For ‘Stranger Things’ to End

Millie Bobby Brown Says She’s Ready For ‘Stranger Things’ to End

    [ad_1]

Millie Bobby Brown was 12 years old when Stranger Things first debuted on Netflix in 2016. Now she is 19, and the show is still going on — and still has an entire final season left to shoot. Brown’s character, Eleven is still ostensibly a teenager, but Brown herself is growing up. And she’s ready to move on to other things.

In a recent interview with Glamour, Brown said that the impending fifth and final season of Stranger Things is akin to graduating from high school, “when you’re ready, you’re like, ‘All right, let’s do this. Let’s tackle this last senior year. Let’s get out of here.”

She also said she is “ready to say ‘Thank you and goodbye’” to the series because it “takes up a lot of time to film and it’s preventing me from creating stories that I’m passionate about.”

READ MORE: Stars Who Got Their Start on Reality TV

Stranger Things undeniably made Brown’s early career, and helped her continue on to projects like the Enola Holmes films and the Godzilla movies. And she does say that working on Stranger Things gave her “the tools and the resources to be a better actor.” But she also does not seem too shaken up that there’s only one season left. (“When it ends, I’m going to be able to still see these people,” she noted.)

Although Stranger Things has been on the air for seven years, it has only produced 34 episodes to date; each season of the show seems to take more time than the last to write and produce. And given that it’s a series about teens coming of age, when the actors playing those teens have already come of age like two or three years ago at this point, that does go a long way toward explaining why Stranger Things is expected to end with its upcoming fifth season. (Netflix is already developing at least one spinoff series, and a stage play is set to debut later this fall.)

These final episodes do not yet have a release date on Netflix; filming cannot begin until the conclusion of the ongoing actors strike.

  • Godzilla Stomps Onto TV in New ‘Monarch’ Trailer

Godzilla Stomps Onto TV in New ‘Monarch’ Trailer

    [ad_1]

The cinematic universe model on both film and TV hasn’t always been an easy one for folks like Marvel or DC. The bigger their universes get, the more unwieldy they can be to manage — both for the people behind the camera and for audiences looking to keep track of everything going on in all of these different films and series. So we will see how the “MonsterVerse” — i.e. Legendary’s combined universe featuring both Godzilla and King Kong — fares in its first live-action TV series, which is due to premiere on streaming in just about a month.

The show is called Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, a reference to the secretive government organization in the, ahem, MonsterVerse that polices and monitors giant creatures like Godzilla and Kong. The human stars of the series are pretty big too , including Kurt Russell, Kiersey Clemons, Anna Sawai, Wyatt Russell, Anders Holm, and John Goodman, reprising the role he previously played in Kong: Skull Island.

The series certainly looks on par — at least in terms of monster action — with the movies. Check out the trailer below:

Here’s the official synopsis for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters:

Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco, and the shocking revelation that monsters are real, “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” tracks two siblings following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch. Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw (played by Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell), taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The dramatic saga – spanning three generations – reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters premieres on Apple TV+ on November 17. The show consists of 10 episodes.

  • ‘Loki’ Works Best as a Meta Show About Chaos at Marvel TV

‘Loki’ Works Best as a Meta Show About Chaos at Marvel TV

    [ad_1]

Despite the fact that this week saw the return of Loki, one of Marvel’s most popular and acclaimed shows, most of the conversation about the company’s television division lately centers instead on an article in The Hollywood Reporter about the creative dysfunction behind the scenes of the superhero studio.

If something can be both shocking and not at all surprising at the same time, this report was. Shocking, in the sense that it painted a troubling picture of the creative process at Marvel, an enormously successful company that has made a lot of very good and very profitable movies — and a few really good TV shows as well, like WandaVision and the first season of Loki. Not at all surprising, in the sense that after those early successes on TV, Marvel’s Disney+ shows have grown increasingly frustrating, with unwieldy structures, dicey special effects, and uninteresting stories. Reading that the creator of a show like Moon Knight quit during production goes a long way toward explaining why that show started off so promisingly and ended so disappointingly, squandering a great Oscar Isaac performance in the service of a bland MacGuffin chase that mostly abandoned the compelling ideas and themes introduced in its first episode.

Things have apparently grown so troubled at the studio that, per THR, they recently parted ways with the original head writers of their upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series and are looking to bring in new producers to rework the concept and reshoot most of the show after numerous episodes had already been filmed prior to the start of the actors and writers strikes. In other words, things could be going better at so-called House of Ideas.

READ MORE: Every Marvel Phase Four Movie and Show, Ranked From Worst to Best

After two episodes, Loki Season 2 does not look like it is going to be the show that is going to right the ship for Marvel. Like all of the company’s Disney+ series, it does have a great cast, including Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, and Ke Huy Quan. And it has plenty of the fun callbacks and Easter eggs and rich details that Marvel is known for. (I did get a kick out of the Kingo poster on the wall at the movie premiere early in this week’s episode.) What this Loki season lacks, especially compared to the first, is a clear narrative through line.

Loki’s first season had that; a “variant” of the title character (Hiddleston) who wound up arrested by the Time Variance Authority and swept up in their chase for another Loki variant, this one a woman named Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino). Loki and Sylvie eventually fall in love (even though they are sort of the same person) and then uncover the truth about the TVA: That it is run by a mad scientist from the future named He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors), who created the TVA to prevent a recurrence of a multiversal war between his own variants.

In the Loki Season 1 finale, He Who Remains offered Loki and Sylvie the choice to let the multiverse return or to take over the TVA and continue protecting the “Sacred Timeline” on his behalf. Sylvie stabbed He Who Remains, but chose not to assume control of the TVA, leading to the rampant multiverses seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Even as it had to explain all of these concepts about time travel and alternate timelines, Loki Season 1 did an impressive job of making the emotional and narrative stakes for Loki, Sylvie, and the rest of the TVA very clear. In contrast, I have no clue what is supposed to be going on in Loki Season 2. He Who Remains is still gone and multiple factions within the organization are all carrying out different agendas; some are acting like nothing has changed, while others are actively trying to upend their plans to restore the Sacred Timeline.

Loki and the TVA’s Agent Moebius (Wilson) are close friends, but don’t seem to have remotely the same goals. A TVA tech expert (Quan) who was never mentioned in the first season is doing vague but supposedly very important experiments in the organization’s basement. And Sylvie is inexplicably living in an alternate 1980s and working at a McDonald’s, apparently because Marvel couldn’t find a more plausible way to shoehorn some product placement into the series. (I mean, after you have killed an immortal time god, why not go sling some McGriddles for a while? A variant’s got to decompress somehow!)

Given the timing, it was impossible to watch this week’s Loki and not compare it to the scenes at Marvel described in that THR article — and to interpret the TVA in shambles as a metatextual version of the studio. Like the TVA, Marvel’s TV division (at least according to THR) is in a state of major upheaval, with at least one executive who oversaw the recent Secret Invasion show set to depart the company, and various creative groups fighting for control of the company’s various productions. (THR claims that Secret Invasion got bogged down in a battle between “leaders [who] vied for supremacy during Secret Invasion’s preproduction,” and ultimately resulted in “a good portion of the Invasion team being replaced, with new line producers, unit production managers, and assistant directors.”)

This would not the be first time Marvel produced something that invited comparisons to its own corporate culture. In 2017, I wrote a piece about how the best way to understand Marvel’s growth from underdog comic company to Hollywood titan was to look at Tony Stark‘s character arc in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Stark makes the first Iron Man suit while held hostage by terrorists — at the same time Marvel was beholden to other major studios, who wished to exploit their valuable IP for their own gain. In the early days, Tony’s armor is a patchwork mess. He doesn’t really know what he’s doing, or even have a full sense of what he is making. Neither did Marvel in those days. Then Tony joins up with the Avengers, around the same time that Marvel was acquired by Disney. That first lineup of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes assembled around a table in the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier that looked an awful lot like a corporate boardroom. And so on.

After two episodes, I’m pretty disappointed with Loki Season 2. I don’t really understand what Loki (or Sylvie, or Moebius, or O.B.) are after, and while I enjoy some of the production design and the overall aesthetic of the TVA, I don’t have a good handle on the narrative stakes and I have no sense of where the show is going or why I should care about this unclear destination. Really, the only way I find myself enjoying it so far is as a Marvel show about the state of Marvel, a place where the multiverse seems to be spiraling out of control and the people who are still working there are not entirely sure what to do about it.

The 13 TV Shows With the Biggest Casts

    [ad_1]

There is something to be said for television shows who keep things minimal and sleek, shows with a core group of cast members occasionally seasoned by additional supporting or guest stars. Then again, there’s nothing like the rush of watching a show with a cast so big every scene seems to have a new character in it, or shows that run so long their core group of characters expands from year to year. To that end, we have compiled a list of the best television shows with absolutely enormous casts, everything from office sitcoms to political dramas to high fantasy thrillers, just to see how big the number of characters in our favorite shows actually is.

For the purposes of this list, we looked at shows like Deadwood and Game of Thrones that have a large main cast as well as a robust supporting cast, as well as shows like Skins and American Horror Story, whose seasonally rotating cast of characters changes often enough for new members to be brought in, increasing the shows’ overall totals. Here are the best shows on television with the biggest casts, arranged from “pretty manageable” to “will give you a headache if you try to keep all the characters straight at once.” There’s something for everyone here, and we mean absolutely everyone.

‘Loki’ Season 2 Episode 2 Easter Eggs: All the Secrets You Missed

    [ad_1]

The plot is thickening quickly on Loki Season 2, and in Episode 2 — titled “Breaking Brad” — we see the continuing fallout from the death of He Who Remains, and the continuing identity crisis inside the Time Variance Authority. Different factions want control of the TVA, and some of those people consider any variant from any universe beyond the “sacred timeline” as lesser than — which mirrors Loki’s own inferiority complex. He has always felt like the lesser of Odin’s sons and has spent his whole life trying to get out of Thor’s shadow and earn his father’s love.

That’s just one of the many Easter eggs, Marvel references, and little details you might have missed in the latest episode of Loki. In our latest Marvel Cinematic Universe video, we’ll show you where to find all of them, including the reference to one of the most ridiculous and obscure Marvel villains in history, the shoutout to Kumail Nanjiani’s character from Eternals, and why the poster for a Herbie movie at the 1977 film premiere actually says a lot about this episode. ‘Halloween’ Is Now Becoming a TV Series

    [ad_1]

Remember that movie, Halloween Ends? Yeah, you can forget about that.

Halloween is never going to end. Not when people associate this spooky holiday with its ferocious masked protagonist, Michael Myers, and his endless quest to terrorize the men, women, children, and babysitters of his small town of Haddonfield, Illinois. Michael is way to valuable to ever “die.” And so Halloween is not ending; it’s starting all over again.

According to Deadline, a deal has been struck for a new TV series between the franchise’s rightsholders and Miramax. They also note that “the new Halloween series is envisioned to potentially launch a cinematic universe spanning film and television.” So it’s a TV series that could also beget movies too.

READ MORE: The Worst Horror Movie Cliches We Never Want to See Again

Halloween Ends was the capper to the most recent trilogy of Halloween films, ones which were treated as direct legacyquels to the original John Carpenter masterpiece from 1978. These movies, all directed by David Gordon Green, ignored all the other sequels that had come through the years — seven previous sequels, plus a two-part rebooted franchise by Rob Zombie — and brought back the franchise’s original star, Jamie Lee Curtis, for a film about her character, Laurie Strode dealing with the trauma of those original attacks. (Oh and also dealing with, y’know, Michael Myers.)

Halloween would be far from the first slasher franchise to become a TV series. Films ranging from A Nightmare on Elm Street to Friday the 13th to Scream and Child’s Play are all prior examples. Some have been more faithful to the source material and concept than others; the Friday the 13th show, for example, had nothing to do with Jason Voorhees or camps in the woods.

Although the third film Halloween Ends was meant to conclude Michael Myers’ story, you can see where we are now. The story can just be restarted elsewhere by other people. Forever. And that is the real meaning of horror.

Is ‘Loki’ Suffering From Marvel Fan Fatigue?

    [ad_1]

Based on our anecdotal evidence on social media and our YouTube channel, it appears that Marvel fans are not quite as invested in the new season Loki as they were in the first season — and in general, it does feel like that after a slew of middling to disappointing Marvel films and shows like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Secret Invasion the bloom is a bit off the rose of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So are we finally seeing the first real tangible evidence of Marvel fan fatigue?

That’s the subject of our latest video. In it, ScreenCrush’s Ryan Arey is joined by two of the authors of the new book MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, Joanna Robinson and Dave Gonzales, for a fun and frank discussion of the state of Marvel circa mid-2023. Are fans getting tired of Marvel? Is the Multiverse Saga too complicated? Are the storylines too bogged down with less important characters? For a long time, Marvel seemed as invincible as Thanos after he assembled the Infinity Gauntlet. Their movies were all massive hits and critical successes. They moved into TV with a lot of early success, including WandaVision and the first season of Loki. The Marvel Cinematic Universe looked like it would continue to grow forever.

The last year or so has brought the company back to Earth. Recent productions like Eternals and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania have earned so-so reviews and commensurate grosses. And their recent TV series have gotten even harsher receptions, including this summer’s extremely disappointing Secret Invasion. Marvel has a lot of very exciting titles on the horizon, but their recent output is definitely not as consistent as it used to be.

Some of the reasons why are detailed in a damning new piece in The Hollywood Reporter, which outlines a lot of previously unknown turmoil and turnover at the company’s TV division. While most of the piece is about how the company is now in the midst of “revamping” its upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series while it is still in production (supposedly because Marvel felt it “wasn’t working” with its original writers), it also outlines a series of issues behind the scenes at several recent Marvel Disney+ series.

READ MORE: 10 Marvel Actors Who Took Home Props From Set

The article reveals, for example, that the creator and writer of their Moon Knight show, Jeremy Slater, “quit,” at which point “director Mohamed Diab took the reins” on the series. It also claims She-Hulk writer Jessica Gao was “sidelined” on the show after director Kat Coiro became involved, but was later “brought back to oversee postproduction.”

Moon Knight had the benefit of a very good Oscar Isaac performance at its center, but it was hard not to see that show as a disappointment. It ranks very low on my own ranked list of Marvel Disney+ series, where I wrote that it had “all the ingredients to make one of Marvel’s best productions” yet somehow “fell almost totally flat.” Hearing there was a lot of staff changes going on at the show certainly does not shock me.

THR’s piece claims that Marvel is currently rethinking the way its makes TV beyond just changing Daredevil: Born Again. It supposedly plans to start employing a more traditional authority structure moving forward, where previously they were making their shows much like their movies in terms of development and production. We’ll have to wait and see if the changes begin producing better results.

  • Jerry Seinfeld Hints That More ‘Seinfeld’ ‘Is Going to Happen’

Jerry Seinfeld Hints That More ‘Seinfeld’ ‘Is Going to Happen’

    [ad_1]

Jerry Seinfeld was doing a standup set recently and yada yada yada there might be some kind of Seinfeld reunion in the works.

Okay, here’s the non-yada yada yada version: Seinfeld was doing a show recently in Boston, when he fielded a question from the audience about the infamous series finale of Seinfeld, which was watched by an enormous audience in 1998 but was also widely regarded as something of a creative disappointment.

“I have a little secret for you about the ending,” Seinfeld replied, “but I can’t really tell it, because it is a secret. Here’s what I’ll tell you, but you can’t really tell anybody. Something is going to happen that has to do with that ending. Hasn’t happened yet. And just what you are thinking about, Larry and I have also been thinking about. So you’ll see.”

You can see Seinfeld talking about all of this in the video below…

READ MORE: The 10 Most Controversial TV Finales in History

In “The Finale,” Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer were all sentenced to one year in prison for breaking a Good Samaritan law in a small town in Massachusetts while on a vacation. Series co-creator Larry David returned to the show to help pen the finale, which also featured appearances from most of Seinfeld’s most famous guest stars, most appearing as witnesses during the big trial for the main four characters. Despite David’s script and the star-studded cast, “The Finale” often appears on lists of worst TV finales ever made. That episode recently celebrated its 25th anniversary.

Although Seinfeld has never had a formal reunion, Seinfeld, David, and the main cast did collaborate on a quasi-reunion during the seventh season of David’s series Curb Your Enthusiasm, which had an overarching story about the fictional Larry David working on a Seinfeld reunion in order to try to reignite his relationship with his ex-wife Cheryl. That season of the show culminated in a finale that included scenes from the Seinfeld reunion within the show; the whole season was much more well-received than Seinfeld’s actual finale.

A full-on Seinfeld reunion would be quite the TV event, especially if it is something that has Larry David’s participation, which Jerry’s comment certainly suggests this thing has. Before we get our hopes up too high, though, let’s remember a lot of times people tease some kind of massive reunion in very vague terms, it often turns out to be, like, a Super Bowl ad, rather than a full-fledged TV show. Nothing is official until it is official. Until then it is just a rumor involving something about a show about nothing.

These acclaimed series and movies were all turned down by numerous studio and network executives before they finally made it to the screen.

    Why Is Loki Time Slipping?

    [ad_1]

It’s the biggest mystery of Loki Season 2: What the heck is time slipping? Why is Loki doing it? And maybe most importantly, who is behind all of this?

The answers to those questions are the subject of our latest Loki Season 2 video. In it, we discuss this strange new time slipping phenomenon, how it openly contradicts the rules of time travel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and why we think it will directly lead to the return of He Who Remains (and maybe also Kang from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania). We’ll also discuss how Victor Timely fits into all of this, how the machine of his we saw in the Loki Season 2 trailer looks exactly like the temporal loom that we saw in Episode 1 of the season, how many loop and circle symbols there are on this show, and what we think is going to happen on the rest of the season of Loki. Watch all of our theories below:

  • One of TV’s Most Notorious Flops Gets New Life on YouTube

One of TV’s Most Notorious Flops Gets New Life on YouTube

    [ad_1]

In the history of TV, there are a handful of shows that are considered to be the biggest flops in the entire history of the medium. One title that’s way up on that list is something called Turn-On, a sketch comedy series which premiere on — and was almost immediately canceled by — ABC in the winter of 1969.

And when I say immediately, I mean immediately; as the legend goes, ABC canned Turn-On while the debut episode was still on the air. Negative reaction was so swift to the show’s first airings on the East Coast, supposedly, that airings planned for three hours later at numerous stations on the West Coast were hastily called off. Those that did show the Turn-On pilot received angry viewer complaints.

That left a second Turn-On episode produced but never aired at all. While the episodes have been available at some libraries and museums, they have been extremely hard to find for decades— but now both episodes of Turn-On are going to be posted on YouTube.

You will be able to watch the full episode below:

READ MORE: 10 Great TV Shows That Ended After Only One Season

The YouTube description for the show claims “originally aired in 1969 and cancelled immediately, Turn-On producer George Schlatter has always teased releasing the show and has finally agreed to share the first two completed shows with the world via Clown Jewels featuring a newly recorded introduction.”

The two episodes of Turn-On will be available on YouTube’s Clown Jewels channel. But when will we ever get to see all six episodes of the immediately canceled Ozbourne family variety show Osbournes Reloaded, which aired only one (truncated) episode in 2009, leaving five of its six produced episodes unaired? I’m still waiting…

  • ‘Suits’ Sets Record for Most Weeks at No. 1 on Streaming Chart

‘Suits’ Sets Record for Most Weeks at No. 1 on Streaming Chart

    [ad_1]

Despite streaming services doing their best to create original series that will become the next big thing, network TV stations kind of already have the formula down. Suits, which initially ran on USA Network and is now available on Netflix and Peacock, has now spent the most consecutive weeks at #1 on Nielsen’s chart of most-streamed shows. It’s held that position for the last 12 weeks. Before that, it was tied with Ozark, which had held the #1 spot for an impressive 11 weeks.

The show takes place at a New York City law firm, and follows Mike Ross. While Ross is a masterful lawyer thanks to his photographic memory, he technically dropped out of college and hasn’t completed law school. As a result, he shouldn’t technically be allowed to practice law in any kind of official capacity. Despite that, his law firm is one of the best in the city. Luckily, he also has a few friends at the firm who know his secret and are willing to protect him.

The show ran for nine seasons on USA Network, with that ninth season being its final one. It makes sense that the show is so popular on streaming, because it has a pretty solid critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s sitting at 91 percent there, while on Metacritic, the score is 65 percent. It’s part of a group of four other shows that managed to rake in more than one billion minutes of streaming time on the Nielsen most-watched chart. The others were Virgin River (1.92 billion minutes of watch time) One Piece (1.39 billion minutes), The Little Mermaid (1.37 billion) and SWAT.

  • ‘Loki’ Season 2 Premieres With a Multiverse of Madness

‘Loki’ Season 2 Premieres With a Multiverse of Madness

    [ad_1]

The following recap has spoilers for the first episode of Loki Season 2.

If you were hoping Loki would get the Marvel Cinematic Universe back to an emphasis on characters and their emotional arcs, and away from endless plot convolutions and the broader plot of “The Multiverse Saga” … uh … The Marvels is only a month away? Maybe that movie will do that stuff?

Loki certainly did not. In fact, this was one of the least character-focused episodes of TV Marvel has produced to date yet for Disney+. The show’s Season 2 premiere, “Ouroboros,” was pretty much a mad dash through time, peppered with loads of not-very-helpful exposition. By the end of the episode a lot has happened, although I would be hard-pressed to explain to you why. Maybe that will become clearer as the season progresses.

At this point, the difference in the two seasons of Loki — which were overseen by two different head writers, Michael Waldron in Season 1 and Eric Martin in Season 2 — are striking. The opening hours of Loki were complicated at times, sure. They introduced the Time Variance Authority, and their role in policing the timestream of the MCU. And they also introduced the notion of “variants,” alternate versions of famous Marvel characters.

READ MORE: Every Marvel Phase Four Movie and Show Ranked

But the beginning Loki Season 1 was also about Loki, the man (or god) played by Tom Hiddleston. It wrestled with his motivations for committing so many heinous acts in the past, and contemplated whether he (and, by extension, anyone) had the capacity to change in the future. Then Loki started a relationship with Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), one of his variants who’d had an equally miserable life up to that point. Season 1’s science-fiction was rooted in how all those heady ideas about variants impacted the people wandering through the endless hallways of the TVA.

It’s early yet, but Season 2 seems a lot less interested in anything beyond making sense of Marvel’s scrambled multiverse, and precisely how Kang (Jonathan Majors) fits into all of it in the wake of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The awesome cliffhanger from the end of Loki Season 1 — Loki returns to the TVA after Sylvie kills a Kang variant, only to find no one there remembers him and there is now a giant Kang statue looming over the office — is immediately retconned in the Season 2 premiere in deeply disappointing fashion. Instead of an alternate timeline or Loki being erased from history as a result of his actions last season, he’s instead “time slipping” between different points in time inside the TVA, a deeply confusing concept for a few reasons.

For one thing, it was previously established time doesn’t flow linearly at the TVA, so how could you jump around in time linearly there? For another, as Loki bounces between the past and present of the TVA, he begins to alter the future; like when he gives Ke Huy Quan’s character O.B. his nickname by traveling back from the present to a point years before anyone had ever called him that. Avengers: Endgame established a very clear set of rules for time travel in the MCU; rules that included the fact that changing the past does not alter the present. It only creates a new timeline — a concept that worked perfectly with the TVA and their mission to “prune” timelines that strayed from the “sacred” timeline that held the multiverse at bay. In Season 2 of Loki, like a Warren Beatty movie that no one remembers but me, those rules don’t apply.

Again, maybe later episodes in the season will address this seeming No-Prize-worthy continuity error. Frankly, I’m less concerned about that stuff than the fact that the entire episode had a chicken-with-its-head-cut-off vibe to it. It was manic and antsy, with lots of scenes of Loki and his allies bouncing around to no obvious end. Loki is time slipping? Which could kill him? So he has to be pruned from the timestream — formerly a very bad thing you never wanted to happen — to save himself? And Mobius has to put on a space suit and walk out to a giant “loom” of time to help? But his suit is disintegrating? And they should have an hour to do all this but actually it’s only five minutes? And O.B. needs to shut some doors to do … something? And it seems like there is a power struggle within the TVA, but who is on which side and why? I felt like I needed Cliffs Notes (or at least a ScreenCrush Easter egg video) to understand any of it.

This is not the Loki premiere I was hoping for. When the Marvel Cinematic Universe was at its peak, it had many ongoing storylines, and they could sometimes get pretty complicated. But at its core, those movies’ appeal were their iconic comic-book heroes; you bought your ticket to follow the ups and downs of Iron Man and Captain America and even Loki. This show has one of Marvel’s most interesting characters, and a wonderful actor in Hiddleston playing him. So far on Loki Season 2 he seems to play second fiddle to performing maintenance on the broader MCU multiverse.

New episodes of Loki premiere weekly on Disney+.
