McMillan said the potential reduction in evaporation is a key interest of the project. “It limits the light available for photosynthesis. So it could reduce the amount of aquatic weed growth, which is a major canal maintenance issue. It also saves land,” explained Brandi McKuin, a project scientist at UC Merced.However, the project faces challenges. “It’s more expensive to span a canal than it is to build a solar array on the ground, a ground-mounted system,” McKuin said. The team is working to quantify whether the benefits will outweigh the costs, considering water savings, reduced aquatic weed growth and land savings. “If we have less aquatic weed growth and if we don’t have to pay for land, does that make the system less expensive? And that’s what we’re working on quantifying now,” McKuin said.Researchers will gather data after a full season to assess the project’s results.     A man was stabbed and killed on Friday night in Turlock after a road rage incident, according to police. The Turlock Police Department said officers responded to reports of a stabbing around 10:30 p.m. at the 2400 block of West Monte Vista Avenue.According to police, when the officers arrived they found a man on the ground who had been stabbed. Officers attempted life-saving measures but the man, 49-year-old Enrique Gomez, was pronounced dead at the scene.During an investigation Turlock police learned that the stabbing happened after a verbal altercation related to a road rage incident at an apartment complex near the scene. A physical altercation followed and led to the stabbing. Turlock police detectives identified the suspect’s vehicle and partnered with the Modesto Police Department to find the suspect. Ahmad Abweny, a 28-year-old Modesto resident, was arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on murder charges, police said.     Deadly deputy-involved shooting occurs in Stanislaus County

    (FOX40.COM) — The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office said one of its deputies shot and killed a man on Sunday afternoon after he charged at deputies “without warning.”

    Officials said the shooting occurred around 4 p.m. on the 3100 block of N Quincy Road in Turlock.

    The sheriff’s office said its detectives with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit (MCU) are currently investigating the fatal incident.

    On Sunday, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office received reports of a man armed with a weapon who was trespassing. “Upon the Sheriff’s Office arrival, which included a K-9 officer with the Turlock Police Department to provide back-up, they located the armed person,” officials said.

    The sheriff’s office said its deputies attempted to “establish a dialogue, brought in multiple less-than-lethal options, and tried to de-escalate the man into complying with their instructions.” 

    While speaking with the armed suspect, the suspect refused to drop the weapon and charged at deputies without warning, the sheriff’s office said.

    It continued, “This caused a deputy to use his firearm. The man was treated and transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.”

    The scene is still currently being processed by detectives who said they will be at the scene for “several hours.” No law enforcement personnel were injured during the critical incident.  

    “We will provide additional information as details become confirmed and corroborated,” the sheriff’s office said.  

    The Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office will be conducting an independent investigation and review into the officer involved shooting. “The SCSO Internal Affairs Unit will be also be conducting their own administrative review to determine if agency policies were followed,” the agency added.

    (FOX40.COM) — One man was killed and another was injured during a shooting in Turlock, according to the Turlock Police Department.

    At around 6:58 p.m. on Tuesday, Turlock PD responded to a homicide in the 700 block of Wayside Drive. As of 10:07 p.m., the area between Wayside Drive, Kenwood, and N. Olive Avenue is blocked off for an investigation. Police advised the public to avoid the area.
