Steve said that his daughter and her lifelong best friend, Mogen, were found murdered in the same bed.

He noted that the suspect made a point to go upstairs to where his daughter and her friend were sleeping in an interview with Fox News over the weekend.

“I’m not a professional, so I want to specify that, but they’ve said the entry point was the slider or the window. It was the middle floor. So, to me, he doesn’t have to go upstairs,” Steve said. “His entry and exit are available without having to go upstairs or downstairs.”

“Looks like he probably may have not gone downstairs. We don’t know that for sure, but he obviously went upstairs,” the father continued.

Steve added that the case is “super tight,” claiming investigators don’t need to go to the community for answers because the “evidence is right there in that home.”

  • What Happened to Chippendales? Founders, Murders and More

What Happened to Chippendales? Founders, Murders and More

    [ad_1]

Whether you’ve been to a live show or you’re more familiar with Chris Farley’s SNL rendition, the all-male strip club Chippendales has been a household name for decades.

The brand is known as the first strip joint to cater to female desires with its signature shows featuring buff men in cuffs and bow ties – sans shirts.

Founder Somen “Steve” Banerjee opened the strip club for the first time in Los Angeles in 1979, and the brand is still “thriving” today, reps told Entrepreneur, with its permanent Las Vegas show and a world-touring dance troupe.

The brand has attracted the likes of Hollywood, with Magic Mike pulling inspiration from the iconic show, and some stars have even participated in the live performance, including Jersey Shore’s Vinny Guadagnino.

However, things were a lot less glamorous for Banerjee and the club behind the scenes, with several murders, arson, and other crimes connected to the club.

Hulu is set to unpack the dark and twisted history behind Chippendales with its new series, “Welcome to Chippendales,” premiering on November 22, with new weekly episodes through Jan. 3, 2023.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DchtacgVLbQ

How Did Chippendales Start And Who Are the Founders?

Chippendales was the brainchild of Somen “Steve” Banerjee, who is being portrayed by Kumail Nanjiani in the Hulu series. Originally from India, Banerjee immigrated to the United States and worked as a gas station attendant before finding entrepreneurship, according to Entertainment Tonight.

Banerjee owned two gas stations and eventually opened a nightclub called Destiny II in 1975 with his partner Bruce Nahin, according to LA Magazine. Nahin and his father bought 10% of the club to help Banerjee’s cash flow, but he segued to filmmaking in 1987, Nahin said in an interview with The Drill.

After trying magic shows and other entertainment to bring customers in, nightclub promoter and regular Paul Snider suggested an all-male strip club.

In 1980, they changed the name of the club to “Chippendales” — after the British furniture brand — for a “classier” vibe, and Chippendales as we know it was born.

In the early days of Chippendales, Snider and his wife, Playboy‘s 1980 Playmate of the Year, Dorothy Stratten, were instrumental in shaping the club’s look. In fact, Stratten coined the dancers’ iconic “cuffs and collars uniform” and even got Hugh Hefner on board.

Banerjee was seen as the brains behind the operation, and he brought on producer Nick De Noia to choreograph the live shows in 1981. Although the pair helped shape the iconic brand into what it is today, they consistently butted heads.

De Noia took credit for creating Chippendales’ signature choreography and expanding to a New York location in 1983, per LA Magazine.

The duo’s contentious relationship led them to part ways after three years in business together.

De Noia was able to negotiate the rights to take Chippendales on tour with a signed cocktail napkin contract in 1984, per The U.S. Sun. But when the tour proved to be a success, generating $80,000 in profits a week, Banerjee was displeased and fought to regain the rights to the traveling show. He was unsuccessful.

    What Are the Chippendales Murders?

The first tragedy to hit Chippendales occurred shortly after Dorothy Stratten negotiated the deal with Playboy and was honored with Playmate of the Year. Hugh Hefner had taken a liking to Stratten, and although Stratten’s husband, Paul Snider, had helped connect the two and launch Stratten’s career, Hefner did what he could to push Snider out. In 1980, Snider murdered Stratten and committed suicide thereafter.

Meanwhile, De Noia’s tour was booming, but because the napkin contract gave De Noia the rights to the tour, Banerjee wasn’t entitled to any of the profits, to his dismay.

On April 7, 1987, De Noia was murdered by a hired gunman. Following a long FBI investigation, Banerjee was arrested and charged with the second-degree murder of De Noia and conspiracy to commit murders of two competitive dancers in 1993.

Banerjee was also connected to three arson attempts aimed at the brand’s competition.

While Banerjee was facing 26 years in prison after taking a plea bargain and pleading guilty, he took his life while awaiting his sentencing in 1994 in his jail cell.

Who Owns Chippendales Now and How Much Is it Worth?

Despite the chaos that plagued Chippendales in its early days, the brand is still alive and well.

However, the original Chippendales club in Los Angeles closed shortly after losing its liquor license in 1988 and after several other lawsuits and violations.

After Banerjee pleaded guilty, the Chippendales brand went to his wife, Irene, during their divorce.

According to The U.S. Sun, she sold the brand for $2.5 million.

Since then, Chippendales has been in the hands of several people. A 2013 report from The New Yorker says former boy band manager Lou Pearlman purchased the brand in the ’90s before going to prison for fraud.

According to a representative from the brand, “a private equity of owners” has been at the helm since 2000, they told Entrepreneur in a request for comment.

Chippendales’ closed its New York location shortly after September 11, 2001, per The New Yorker, but it found a second life after managing partner Kevin Denberg got a bus and took the dancers on tour, traveling around the country until they landed in Las Vegas.

Chippendales laid roots in Las Vegas in 2002 and its show and tour are still “thriving” today. Katerina Tabakhov currently serves as the production’s director of operations, the brand rep shared, while Denberg is no longer involved in the day-to-day operation.

“The Chippendales are STILL performing to sold-out houses at our home at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas (for over 20 years), as well as our domestic and international tours,” the brand confirmed to Entrepreneur.

The Sin City show is complete with its $10 million custom complex, and tickets range from $49.95 to $149.95.

Or you can catch the Chippendales on tour, which hits six continents and over 25 countries, according to the brand’s website.

Today, the brand generates between $5 million and $25 million in annual revenue, according to Signal Hire.

Folger managed to get out of the mansion turned crime scene but was met by Krenwinkle and Watson on the home’s front lawn.

Krenwinkle and Watson then stabbed Folger numerous times in the yard, where her bloodied body was later found when the home’s housekeeper returned the following day. Upon discovering the ghastly scene on August 9, Chapman called the police.

Police discovered the word “pig” written in blood on the front door of the home. No items of importance were taken from the home and money and jewelry were on the victims’ bodies when they were discovered.

Months later on December 1, following an extensive investigation, the Los Angeles Police Department issued warrants for the arrest of Watson, Krenwinkel, and Kasabian. Atkins and Manson were charged later on.

Four of the five Manson family members received a life sentence. Kasabian, who did not participate in the killings but served as a lookout, was placed in witness protection after testifying against the other defendants.

In 2009, Atkins died of natural causes at the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla. Manson passed from natural causes in 2017 at a California hospital near Corcoran State Prison, where he was serving his life sentence.

Watkins and Krenwinkel remain in prison serving their sentences.

  • Murdaugh Family Murders Explained, What You Need to Know

Murdaugh Family Murders Explained, What You Need to Know

    [ad_1]

The story of the Murdaugh murders stems from a 100-year-old family legal dynasty in Hampton, South Carolina, that was put in the hands of fourth-generation lawyer Alex Murdaugh.

But what took a century to build came crashing down in June 2021, when Alex called authorities after finding his wife, Maggie Murdaugh, and his youngest son, Paul Murdaugh, shot dead in their 1,770-acre hunting lodge at 4147 Moselle Road in Islandton, South Carolina.

These crimes led to a series of revelations about the family, which HBO Max is set to unpack in the new true crime documentary, Low Country: The Murdaugh Dynasty, airing on November 3.

Image credit: Courtesy of Maggie Murdaugh via Facebook.

    Who Are the Murdaugh Family?

The Murdaugh family began in South Carolina at the turn of the century and have been prominent lawyers in the state for decades. Beginning with Alex Murdaugh’s great-grandfather Randolph Murdaugh Sr., who started Peters Murdaugh Parker Eltzroth & Detrick in 1910, generations of his family have continued to work at the firm, including his son, Randolph “Buster” Murdaugh II, grandson, Randolph Murdaugh III, and his great-great-grandsons Randolph “Randy” Murdaugh IV and Alex Murdaugh.

The firm was successful with personal injury cases by taking advantage of a South Carolina law that allows people to sue in any county and not where an incident may have occurred — which can often result in favoritism and landed Hampton County on the 2004 list of “Judicial Hellholes“. However, this made the Murdaugh group the “go-to” lawyers in the county.

Randolph Sr. also became the first elected solicitor, (or district attorney), of the 14th judicial circuit (district) in 1920. Randolph Sr. held the role for 20 years until his death. His son, Randolph “Buster” Murdaugh II, was elected to the position next. He worked from 1940 to 1986, until his son Randolph Murdaugh III took over, working from 1986 to 2006. Alex volunteered and worked part-time in the solicitor’s office after graduating from USC Law School in 1994 until 2021.

The Murdaugh family were solicitors in South Carolina for 86 years straight; leading criminal prosecutions for their district, and playing a key role in deciding which cases get prosecuted (and when) from 1920 to 2006.

What Happened to Paul and Maggie Murdaugh?

Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were shot dead on June 7, 2021. Alex Murdaugh called 911 at around 10 p.m., claiming he had discovered the bodies. However, the coroner found that the two had died between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., per NPR, and they had been shot with different weapons — Maggie with an assault-style rifle and Paul with a shotgun.

In October 2021, Alex was named as a person of interest in the case, although his lawyer denied the allegations and said he had no motive for the crimes, according to People.

According to NBC News, sources close to the investigation said authorities found cellphone video evidence that places Alex at the scene of the crime.

On July 14, 2022, he was indicted by a grand jury in connection to Paul and Maggie’s murders. He was charged with two counts of murder and two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

Alex Murdaugh’s lawyers maintain his innocence.

What Other Crimes Were Uncovered After the Murdaugh Family Murders?

As investigators looked into the deaths of the mother and son, other unsolved crimes relating to the Murdaugh family were discovered.

Two years before his death, in February 2019, youngest son Paul, 22, had been involved in a boat crash that left his friend, Mallory Beach, dead after being thrown from the boat. Though various witnesses said Paul had been driving the boat while intoxicated, according to a previous NBC documentary on Peacock, key evidence had gone missing in the case.

Paul was charged with one count of boating while intoxicated and two counts of causing bodily injury, though people suggested he received special treatment thanks to his family’s legacy. He was released on bond and a date for his trial was never set, per People.

Additionally, two weeks following the double murders that took place in June 2021, the state reopened an investigation into a 2015 case of a man, Stephen Smith, who had been found dead on the side of the road.

While South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has not revealed what evidence caused them to reopen the case, per NPR, the Murdaugh name kept coming up in relation to the case. Sources speculated that Buster Murdaugh, Alex Murdaugh’s eldest son who also worked at the family law firm, had a relationship with Smith, according to the Daily Mail.

Furthermore, although Smith’s death was ruled a hit-and-run, he had a gunshot wound above his right eye and his injuries were not consistent with those sustained from vehicle trauma, according to the Daily Mail.

Buster has not been named a person of interest in Smith’s death.

    What Happened to Gloria Satterfield?

In addition to Smith’s death, SLED began investigating another case involving the Murdaugh family. In 2018, the family’s longtime housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, died after Maggie Murdaugh called 911, claiming Satterfield had fallen down the stairs. It was noted that Paul was present during the call.

Satterfield was a longtime caretaker of the family, and according to sources featured in Discovery + documentary Murdaugh Murders: Deadly Dynasty, she had told several people that Paul would kill small animals and often disregarded authority.

Her cause of death remains unclear.

At the funeral, Alex approached Satterfield’s sons and said since the accident happened on his property, he was going to sue himself for wrongful death so the boys can get some insurance money, according to The New York Times.

With all legalities handled by Alex, the sons were told to wait for a settlement.

Alex and his insurers did reach a $4.3 million settlement in the months after Satterfield’s death, but the Satterfield family didn’t see a dime.

The Satterfield sons filed a lawsuit against Alex Murdaugh in September 2021, and SLED decided to exhume the body for an autopsy in June 2022, according to South Carolina’s WCSC. That same month, Alex agreed to pay the Satterfield family $4.3 million.

Where Is the Murdaugh Law Firm Now?

The alleged misappropriated funds in the wrongful death suit uncovered various other financial crimes including Alex stealing millions from clients and his family law firm, according to The New York Times.

He was then forced out by his partners in September 2021, just three months after the double murders. The firm changed its name to the Parker Law Group, LLP in January 2021, according to WOTC South Carolina.

Alex was also stripped from being a lawyer in the state of South Carolina indefinitely, and his name was removed from the firm that was once known as the “Murdaugh Law Firm.”

    What Happened to Alex Murdaugh?

The following day, after Alex was forced out of the firm, he was shot in the head while changing a tire on the side of the road. The shot only caused minor damage and he was able to call for help.

Days after he was shot, he checked into rehab for opioid addiction. It was there that he admitted to lawyers that he had hired Curtis Eddie Smith to kill him so his son Buster could collect $10 million in insurance money.

On Sept. 16, 2021, he turned himself in to Hampton County Law Enforcement in connection to the suicide-for-hire scam, per People.

Later, on Oct. 14, 2021, Alex was arrested on felony charges for misusing millions from the Satterfield estate and obtaining property under false pretenses, per NPR, and was hit with tens of charges in the months that followed concerning numerous financial crimes and deaths.

He was indicted on murder charges for the deaths of his wife and son in July 2022.

    Where Are the Murdaughs Now?

Alex Murdaugh is currently in jail and is set to go on trial for the June 2021 murders of his son Paul and his wife Maggie in January. If convicted, he could face 30 years to life in prison without parole and could be eligible for the death penalty, according to USA Today.

Murdaugh faces a total of 90 charges, many of which include financial crimes such as stealing from the family law firm, money laundering through a drug ring, and committing insurance fraud.

As for the rest of the surviving Murdaugh family, eldest son Buster was last reported to be “not doing well at all” since his father was arrested for the double murders, sources told People in July 2022.

Despite previously working at his family’s law firm, Buster appears to have no involvement in the rebranded Parker Law Group.

Meanwhile, Alex’s brother Randy still works as a practicing lawyer at the now-renamed Parker Law Firm. He denounced Alex’s actions and claimed he had no involvement in his mishandling of company funds in a statement to People in September 2021.

Randy is also suing Alex for thousands in unpaid loans.

How Much Are the Murdaughs Worth?

It’s unclear exactly how much wealth the Murdaugh family once had, but several accounts and properties were found to be worth millions.

When Murdaugh was held on a $7 million bond for 51 criminal charges, the court detailed Murdaugh’s assets, which included numerous real estate properties and even small islands, according to Greenville News.

Additionally, the court found a retirement account worth between $2.1 and $2.2 million, and an IRA retirement fund valued at $350,000 to $400,000.

He was also supposed to receive a trust for an undisclosed amount after his father Randolph Murdaugh III’s death in June 2021, plus probate assets after his wife’s death that same month.

Furthermore, the family hunting lodge where Paul and Maggie were killed was listed in February 2022 for $3.9 million.

Following the release of the Netflix miniseries Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, the Wall Street Stock Bar, which was once called Club 219, has seen an increase in customers looking for a glimpse at the place the serial killer once looked for victims, despite it having a new look, name and owner.

People have been requesting a “Dahmer drink,” which isn’t on the menu, current owner Charese Gardner told Fox6 News Milwaukee, and some have even left face marks on the bar’s windows from trying to look inside.

Gardner says not all paying customers are good for business, and she isn’t pleased with the unwanted attention.

“I don’t really understand the obsession with walking on a place he walked at,” the business owner said in an interview with the Milwaukee-based news outlet. “It’s just kind of traumatizing to see how people would praise a serial killer.”

Gardner is also trying to remove phony Google reviews of the bar that she says say things like “Jeffrey Dahmer approved” and a “great place to meet new friends.”

“It’s senseless,” Gardner added. “Obviously, those people don’t care about the family members either. To me, it’s kind of like, whose side are you on? Are you really on the killer’s side? Because you’re like promoting for the killer, or is it just like sick jokes?”

To discourage the new wave of Dahmer-obsessed customers, Gardner said she going to make its “219” address less visible while she waits for the true crime craze to blow over.

It struck me while I was watching this film that there was even more to the typical ‘torn from the headlines’ movie, it is a compelling murder mystery, where a real ‘who done it’ is unfolding before our eyes in the news.

Lise Romanoff, Managing Director, Vision Films

MURDER ON THE CAPE is available on Digital for an SRP $4.99 – $9.99 Rent or Buy across all platforms and to Buy on DVD for $14.95.

MURDER ON THE CAPE is based on the true story of New York fashion writer Christa Worthington, who has an affair with a married fisherman while spending a winter holiday in Cape Cod. She returns two years later with his child looking to rekindle their love. When she is found murdered, a mystery unfolds within the tight-knit community, shedding doubt on the prime suspect’s guilt.

“The heart of the story is that there were all these personal struggles that you cannot read in a book about the crime,” director Arthur Egeli says. “You don’t get to see how everything affects each other, so we produced a narrative film about the characters who all had unique perspectives.”
