This pale blue blazer from Halogen looks perfectly spring-y. I don’t gravitate towards a lot of pastels (I’m a winter, remember?), but this might be the exception.

I would pair this with a navy sheath for the office or layer it over a white sundress for the weekend.

The blazer is $139–$149 at Nordstrom and comes in sizes 1X–3X and XXS–XXL. It’s also available in ivory.

A woman wearing a green dress and silver sandals

Our daily workwear reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

This sheath dress from London Times has a fun little tie detail that is just speaking to me. Maybe I’m feeling nostalgic for the early aughts when Carrie Bradshaw convinced us all that we needed a giant Chanel flower affixed to our tops?)

This dress would be a great basic to have on hand if your office skews more formal, and it comes in a range of colors and prints. The pictured “shaded spruce” is my favorite of the bunch, but don’t miss out on the bright “cherries jubilee” or “high-risk red.”

The dress is available at Amazon in sizes 4-24 for under $100.

The fact that I haven’t featured this dress before feels downright criminal. This knot-front pleated dress from Eloquii is one of my favorite items. The fit is gorgeous, it comes in a wide range of colors, and it’s machine washable. Amazing.

This “lilac rose” color caught my eye, but it comes in black and four other beautiful jewel tones.

The dress is on safe for $54.97 with code (originally $109.95) at Eloquii and comes in sizes 14–32.

For an alternative in straight sizes, try this Connected Apparel dress; it’s $69 and available in several colors at Nordstrom.

The J.Crew cashmere tees are classic for a reason. They’re well-priced (albeit frequently excluded from J.Crew’s sales), and the roomy fit is a pleasant surprise in a time when everything seems to be cropped and fitted.

The navy-and-white striped version is my favorite this season (I’m currently wearing it in the office with olive green pants and brown loafers), but be sure to check out the solids, too.

The sweater is $128 at J. Crew and comes in sizes XXS–3X.

Somehow, these pants from Reformation have never crossed my radar, but the fact that they come in ELEVEN colorways is always a good sign. (Like a lot of people on the internet, I was poking around the site after seeing the Monica Lewinsky ads.)

The slate blue color caught my eye as a fun alternative to a typical neutral, but I’ve been struggling to think about what to pair them with. I think I’d try out an ivory blazer for a more formal look, but I’d probably eventually end up with my go-to black turtleneck until the weather warms up a bit more.

The pants are $178 at Reformation and come in sizes 0–12 as well as petites and plus sizes.

Hunting for more wide-leg pants to wear to work? We just rounded some up, and general favorites include pleated pairs like Favorite Daughter, Everlane*, Reformation*, and Abercrombie*, with flat-front pairs from Good American,* M.M.LaFleur, and Ann Taylor. (* = plus sizes; see the post for notes on petites and talls). We’ve also shared our thoughts on what shoes to wear with wide-leg pants! Our latest favorite wide-leg pants include these (as of 2024):

This elevated version of a T-shirt dress is making me pine for summer Fridays. Vince is a brand that knows what it’s doing when it comes to basics, and this 100% cotton dress is no exception.

It’s too chilly for me to wear this in the Northeast right now, but I would probably wear it to my business casual office once a week from May through October.

The dress is $195 at Vince and comes in sizes 1X–3X.

This black dress from Kensie is available in straight sizes and is $59.99 on clearance (lucky sizes; many other colorways). It’s selling quickly, so another option to check out is this $128 Donna Morgan dress that comes in 2–18.

I’m a huge fan of Spanx pants and dresses, but this is the first time I can remember seeing a top that jumped out at me.

This sleeveless, tie-waist top is super flattering and would work with a variety of outfits. I haven’t seen it in person yet, but the “perfect” ponte fabric I’ve worn in the past has the perfect amount of thickness and stretch for smoothing and flattering a variety of figures.

Wear it under a long blazer for the office or with some bright ankle pants for a fun summer weekend.

The top is $98 and comes in sizes XS–3X.

For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional. Also: we just updated our big roundup for the best women’s suits of 2024!

Ooh: I’m excited to see that former luxury/indie brand Henning is still kicking in some fashion — Universal Standard now has a collaboration with them! There are a bunch of great elevated basics like pants, blouses, and this pantsuit.

It’s available in sizes 00-40 (4XS-4XL), and it comes in black as well as a pretty brown “pony.” The pants are $198, and the double-breasted blazer is $298. (There’s also a great basic sheath dress, but it sadly does not come with a matching blazer as far as I can tell.)

Hunting for more great basic suiting? This ponte suit from Boden caught my eye because the wide-leg pants look perfect (I’m linking to it in “hot pepper” because it brings up most of the matching pieces, but it also comes in black and navy); it’s available in sizes 00-22.

Great basics can be hard to come by in the plus-sized space, so I was thrilled to see this fantastic short-sleeved sheath from Maggy London. My favorite part is that the sleeves are substantial enough that this could be worn on its own, but not so bulky that you can’t tuck them into a blazer.

If you’re already set with a basic black sheath, it also comes in navy.

The dress is $138 at Nordstrom and comes in sizes 14W-24W. It also comes in straight sizes starting at $83.

(Hunting for more? These were our favorite plus-size work dresses in 2023…)

This navy floral top from Tanya Taylor is a stunner. The hand-painted navy floral print is gorgeous for winter, and the satiny fabric looks so luxurious.

The brown leather skirt they’ve styled it with here is one of my favorites of the season, although it’s not as size-inclusive as I’d like to see. Plus-sized folks, don’t miss this faux-leather version from NYDJ.

The blouse is $237, marked down from $395, at Tanya Taylor and comes in sizes XS–3X.

A couple of more affordable blouses are this one from Lauren Ralph Lauren (straight sizes, $82.15 on sale) and this other Lauren Ralph Lauren top (plus sizes, $145).

Once a J.Crew item reaches a certain level of popularity, I know that J.Crew Factory will release its own, lower-priced version within a season or two. I wasn’t quite ready to pull the trigger on the full-priced Bouclé Lady Cardigan a few months ago, but this new version seems like it’s right up my alley.

I would wear the ivory color over a black sheath for a classic, business casual look.

The sweater is $64.50 at J.Crew Factory and comes in sizes XXS–3X.

It’s the shortest day of the year and I’m looking for something cozy to hibernate in until the sun comes out again. I would wear this with my comfiest navy or black trousers and some loafers and warm socks while I sit at my desk and pine for warm weather.

The sweater is $110 at Nordstrom and comes in sizes 1X–3X.

The regular-size version of this cardigan seems to be sold out at Madewell and elsewhere, but Quince has a brown button-front cardigan for $69.90 in sizes XS–XL.

This shawl-collar sweater from Lands’ End is a longtime reader favorite. The moody floral print on this Halogen top looks absolutely perfect for the fall and winter seasons. I always find myself unconsciously swapping out my bright colors for darker hues as the days get shorter, and this blouse would slide into the rotation quite nicely.
