Short-sleeve sweaters are a wardrobe workhorse in my closet all year long. In the winter, they provide an extra layer of warmth I can wear under blazers and cardigans, and in the summer, they protect me from the chill of central air conditioning, but are still cool enough to wear outside.

This sweater from Universal Standard has my absolute favorite elbow sleeve length — long enough to provide some coverage, but not so long that they bunch up under blazers. It comes in 11 (!) different colorways, so there’s something for everyone!

The sweater is $84 at Universal Standard and comes in sizes equivalent to 00-40.

I really love the details on this knit jacket from Sézane. The crocheted buttons, the front pockets, the contrasting trim — all perfection! This skews a little bit casual to my eye, so I might not wear it in the most formal of office settings, but I think it would be great paired with some wide-leg trousers for a lovely business casual look.

The jacket is $235 at Sézane and comes in sizes XXS-XXXL.

Two options that are more affordable are from Lands’ End ($62 on sale; regular, plus, petite) and Everlane ($111 on sale; XXS-XXL).

This is a blazer that I can absolutely picture existing in my great-grandmother’s closet, but that doesn’t make me want it any less. The avocado-green color, pockets, and covered buttons look vintage-inspired, but still contemporary.

My great-grandmother would have worn it with coordinating trousers and a vibrant earring/necklace matching set, but I would probably stick with some gold studs and a midi skirt for the office.

The blazer is $328 at J.Crew and comes in sizes 000-24. It also comes in ivory, on sale for $194.50.

Psst – we just did a big hunt for lady jackets and blazers!

This faux leather-trimmed blazer from Talbots is a fun twist on the classic black-and-white look. I’m trying to add a little more color to my wardrobe, so I might wear this with a white blouse and a pair of jewel-toned pants, but you can’t go wrong pairing this with a black sheath or a pair of black trousers.

The blazer is on sale for $159-$179 at Talbots (with an additional 40% off when you add to cart) and comes in sizes 2-18, 14W-24W, and some lucky sizes in petite and plus petite.

I’m dreaming of the days when I can wear skirts without fleece tights underneath, and very much looking forward to twirling around in a midi skirt like this one from Caslon. I love an A-line, and this crisp poplin skirt looks delightfully spring-y.

I’m really tempted to add a cardigan twinset for an extra preppy look, but it would also look lovely with a crisp oxford shirt.

The skirt is $79.50-$89.50 at Nordstrom and comes in sizes XXS-XL and 1X-3X.

When I bought my first pair of Spanx in 2008 to help smooth things out under a bridesmaid dress (they were promptly ditched in a bathroom trash can at the reception, in case you were wondering), I never would have believed you if you’d told me that the company would eventually end up selling some of my favorite pants.

Unlike the shapewear, I find the clothing to be super comfortable, plus they’re machine washable and the pants come in a wide range of sizes and inseams. I’m leaning toward these poppy-colored flares as the next ones to add to my collection.

I would probably pair this bold color with a navy or camel sweater, but they do have a button-up blouse in a similar color if you’re really leaning in.

The pants are $158 at Spanx and come in sizes XS-3X with petite, regular, and tall inseams.

As a long-torsoed lady, I tend to shy away from cropped anything, but this blazer from J.Crew is really calling to me. While the logical part of my brain knows that it’s going to be way too short on me, the less logical part is really loving the striped trim details and wondering if there’s a way we can pull it off.

While I sort this out, I hope someone else snaps it up and pairs it with some high-waisted navy trousers for a gorgeous business casual outfit.

The blazer is $298 at J. Crew and comes in sizes 00-24. It also comes in a really lovely “faded mint” color that’s on sale for $248.

When I used public transportation for commuting to work, I always preferred skirts to pants on snowy days. My thinking was that wearing tights was much easier than trying to stuff pants into my snow boots, and if I got wet and cold, it was much easier to keep a spare set of black tights in my desk than a whole set of pants. I commute by car now, but I still like wearing a skirt and cozy tights on wet, slushy days.

This skirt from Universal Standard would look great with a comfy sweater and some tall boots this winter. It comes in six colors, but I really like this deep teal.

The skirt is $98 at Universal Standard and comes in sizes equivalent to 00-40.

I was a big fan of the Abercrombie & Fitch Sloane pants when they came on the market a few years ago, so I’m interested in trying out their new bootcut options. This pair has a bit of stretch to it and reminds me a little of my beloved Express Editors.

For me, the best part is that they come in both a standard and a “curve love” fit to accommodate different body types, and go up to a waist size of 38, which is a little different than the Abercrombie I remember from my youth! The pants also come in four different inseams, giving you a lot of options for finding something that fits well, and avoiding trips to the tailor.

The pants are $90 at Abercrombie and come in sizes 23-38 with extra short, short, regular, and long inseams.

I’ve been getting served a lot of ads for Sophie Grace, a Canadian company focused on making “streamlined, elegant, mix and match staples,” so I decided to take a look around their site, and I’m psyched. It looks like they have a lot of good-looking basics designed by someone who has actually spent time in a professional office.

This pencil skirt, made of a four-way stretch material, comes in five different colors and has three potential coordinating blazers. I’m placing an order now!

The skirt is $170 and comes in sizes XS-2XL.

The floral appliqués on this Anthropologie top are making me nostalgic for “Sex and the City” in the best way. The ribbed tank top skews a bit casual, but if you’re in an office where that fits the vibe, I think this would look really cute layered under a sweater blazer or cardigan.

The top is $88 and comes in sizes XXS-XL, XXS Petite-XL Petite, and 1X-3X. It’s also available in blue and black, but not in the plus or petite sizes, sadly.

I cannot get enough of this gorgeous berry color, and these wide-leg trousers from Torrid are the perfect way to incorporate one of my favorite hues of the season. I would really lean into the autumnal vibe and pair these with camel or chocolate shades, but you could also choose a lighter pinkish color for a monochromatic look.

If the berry color isn’t your vibe, these also come in a gorgeous “botanical garden” green and basic black.

The pants are $79.90 at Torrid and come in sizes 10-30 and in short, regular, and tall inseams.

Ten years ago, I would have died before I recommended a long skirt for the office, but with the proliferation of midi skirts these days, I think this long pencil skirt from Mango might actually be acceptable.

A-line, office-appropriate dresses can be hard to find, but this sweater dress from Talbots is a real winner. The shape is feminine, but not constricting, and the V-neck will look lovely with lots of different accessory options.

The rich burgundy color would look fantastic with a tortoiseshell shoe or some dark brown boots when the weather gets a little chillier.

The dress is $179-$199 at Talbots and comes in sizes XS-XL, P-XLP, and X-3X. It also comes in black.

Old Navy is celebrating its 30th birthday and reissuing some of its bestsellers from 1994. I’m pretty sure I had some version of this rugby dress, and I’m seriously considering grabbing it again 30 years later.

This is something that I would probably reserve for a more casual office, but I think it could work with some loafers or oxfords for a very relaxed business casual look.

Anthropologie’s Colette pants have been in constant rotation in my wardrobe for the last several months, so I was delighted to see that they’re making a skirt in a similar cut.

These wide-leg pants from Liverpool have long been a favorite of mine, but this herringbone colorway is a new one. I wear this style pretty frequently, and the fact that these pants are machine washable has always been a big selling point for me. (I hang them to dry upside down because I think I read somewhere that it prevents wrinkling? I have no idea if that’s true, but it works pretty well for me.)

Wear these with a black top or grab your favorite winter-hued jewel tone.

I am absolutely smitten with this sweet mock-neck sweater from Anthropologie. (The brand calls this colorway “rose,” but it looks more like a poppy to me?)

My office leans on the more casual end of the business casual spectrum, so I would wear this to work with some slimmer-cut pants and a pair of loafers. If you’re on the more formal end of the spectrum, I would zhuzh it up by tucking it into a high-waisted skirt and adding some great shoes.

The sweater is $98 at Anthropologie and comes in plus sizes 1X-3X, petite sizes XS-XL, and standard sizes XXS-XL. It also comes in seven other colorways, but sadly, not all colors are available in the non-standard sizes.

The peplum top is back, whether we’re ready for it or not. I’m leaning towards a more subtle peplum than I wore 10 years ago, and this ribbed tank from Halogen is right up my alley. To make the look more 2024 than 2014, I would pair it with some wider-leg trousers (not brightly-colored skinny jeans), skip the statement bubble necklace, and go with some more delicate jewelry.

The “Miami green” color of this top is on sale for $47.40 at Nordstrom ($79 for navy blue) and comes in sizes 1X–3X. It also comes in more color options in straight sizes.
