  • We Found the Best Travel Cameras You’ll Actually Use on Vacation

    If I were buying a camera today, this is the body I would get, travel or otherwise. The A7C R is one of the smallest full-frame, interchangeable-lens cameras on the market. The viewfinder is cramped and low-resolution (2.36 million dots). It’s not a deal breaker for me, but it’s something to keep in mind and good reason to rent a camera before you invest.

    The big question with this camera is, which lens do you pair it with for travel? There’s a compelling argument to be made for the Sony FE 24-105-mm f/4 G ($1,300), which gives you everything from wide to portrait with a little bit of extra reach as well. Another great option if you like primes is the Sony 40-mm f2.5 G ($748), which makes for a compact kit, and 40-mm is a surprisingly great focal length for travel in my experience.

    ★ Alternatives: At $2,198, Sony’s A7C II (note, no R) is a bit cheaper. It uses Sony’s smaller 33-MP sensor but is otherwise very close in size and capabilities.

  • AI wants to help you plan your next trip. Can it save you time and money?

    Artificial intelligence is poised to change how businesses and consumers interact in virtually every industry, including travel, which is ripe for disruption by AI. 

    When the first online trip planning sites emerged in the mid-1990s, they let consumers act as their own travel agents. Decades later, artificial intelligence tools are able to take over that role, and plan and book trips on behalf of travelers, saving them time and even money. 

    “It takes a lot of research and clicking around. It takes an average of 30 days between when you start planning a trip and when it’s fully finished,” Skylar Erickson, co-founder of Gondola AI, which helps consumers maximize their loyalty points, told CBS MoneyWatch. “You have 40 tabs open on your browser, so it takes a lot of work to get to that right answer.” 

    Also, because airfares and hotel room rates fluctuate constantly based on demand, shoppers could save a lot of time using a chatbot or other AI-powered tool to track and compare prices rather than manually refreshing their browsers. 

    “You log into a site, and you’re trying to find the right price based on what other airlines are charging — that’s the ultimate goal,” Ram Reddy, an AI expert and chief technology officer at Nagarro, a consulting firm, said. “AI tools that know you well can get you to the right place at the right time, when prices, which aren’t static, are changing every minute.” 

    Consumers booking trips are already seeing AI’s value: 41% of more than 2,000 consumers surveyed by Oliver Wyman, a management consulting firm, said they had recently used AI tools for travel inspiration or itinerary planning. 

    From inspiration to booking

    There are a range of AI-powered apps and bots at consumers’ fingertips that can help plan a trip — from inception to booking. AI-powered bots can help travelers dream up trip ideas, turn visual inspiration into ready-to-go itineraries, and complete bookings and payments while maximizing the consumer’s own loyalty points and other rewards so that they save money. In other words, AI provides the services in which travel agents at brick-and-mortar travel agencies once specialized. 

    Ways AI can assist travel planning

    Did you see a social media post of a trip you’d like to be on? Send it to Expedia to book your own version through a feature called Trip Matching, which can turn social media reels into bookable trip itineraries. 

    Don’t know what to plan for the kids while on a family vacation? ChatGPT can generate a list of free activities in any locale. 

    Not sure how many loyalty points or rewards you’ve accrued, or what they’re worth? A company called Gondola AI can figure that out, helping users maximize their loyalty points so their dollars take them further.

    Trip planning and booking is prime territory for AI agents to test their skills, and hopefully, make the process easier for consumers, according to AI leaders. 

    “These days, it’s easier to identify where AI is not being used to help travelers. It is everywhere, from planning to booking,” Melanie Fish, head of global PR for Expedia Brands, told CBS MoneyWatch.

    Jennifer Yellin, travel expert at Points Path, a browser extension that helps consumers compare flight deals, said the more she utilizes AI for trip planning, the better the technology gets to know her, and the more useful it becomes. 

    “The more you use it, it starts to recognize your patterns and preferences. It gets to know you as a traveler,” she said of a Gondola AI, one of her favorite new tools. “If you’ve been booking stays at Ritz Carltons, it won’t suggest a Marriott Residence Inn as a first option; it will suggest a stay of a similar caliber.”

    “I used it dozens of times”

    Other travel industry pros say they see more value in AI’s ability to help them navigate locales once they’ve arrived. 

    “ChatGPT totally revolutionized how we were able to get along in China — I used it to scan menus and translate them into English,” Scott Keyes, founder of flight deals site Going.com, told CBS MoneyWatch.tytrf “I used it dozens of times a day.”

    As far as trip planning goes, Keyes said that while he’s generally an AI optimist, “the use case has not yet proven itself to me.”

    Which tools are the most helpful? These are some popular trip planning tools. Here’s how they can help, and where they fall short. 

    AI travel planning tools

    ChatGPT: The AI chatbot can suggest places to stay or things to do anywhere in the world. Tell it you’re visiting New York City around Christmastime with young children and you’re not sure what neighborhood to stay in. It can suggest parts of town and outline their pros and cons. 

    Google Flight Deals: Enter a destination and desired dates, or describe the type of trip you’d like to take, such as “beach escape,” or “Paris in the fall.” Let the AI-powered search engine — designed for travelers who want to save money — try to find you the best deal based on such parameters. The tool is not an AI agent though, and can’t book tickets for you. 

    Expedia Trip Matching: The AI tool lets you send a public Instagram travel reel, or video, to Expedia, which will create an itinerary based on the visual inspiration you provide. The reel must be publicly available on Instagram, and the AI tool can only suggest trips in the U.S. market. 

    Gondola AI: Give the tool access to your email, and it will cull your loyalty points and rewards from airlines, hotels and credit card companies to let you know what they are worth. It will compare prices in cash versus combinations of points, and can save you hundreds of dollars. It comes into play after you’ve decided where you want to go and stay. “We are about finding you money, earning you money and redeeming at the highest possible value,” Erickson said.

  • Visit Philadelphia expands marketing reach with $9 million tourism campaign for 2026

    Visit Philadelphia, the region’s tourism marketing agency, unveiled a $9 million advertising campaign Tuesday to promote a busy 2026 schedule of events that includes celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, as well as the World Cup, PGA Championship and MLB All-Star Game.  

    The effort, which includes around $4 million from the city, is nearly double the organization’s typical annual campaign budget and the additional funding will be used to reach a more national audience with TV commercials, billboards, print ads and social media influencers

    Chief Marketing Officer Neil Frauenglass said Visit Philadelphia usually spends around $5 million on a campaign per year, with those funds focused on advertising in mid-Atlantic cities like New York, Washington and Baltimore. However, the influx of money has allowed the group to expand its campaign to Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago and Miami. 

    “This is a really nice boost,” he said. “… Not only does it allow us to go wider in terms of inviting people to come during our big year, but it also allows us to learn about how people respond to messaging about Philly in these markets and could potentially open new markets for us in 2027 and beyond.” 

    Over 250 businesses and community groups — including the the Barnes Foundations and the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation — contributed to a social media push, posting the newly revealed 2026 logo on Tuesday.

    Badge Builder tool was launched on the Visit Philadelphia website that allows users to customize their own version of the logo, which was inspired by William Penn’s original grid layout for the city. The personalized design can be shared on social media or printed and used as a window decal.

    “The badge is really a way to signal that something special is happening in 2026,” Frauenglass said. “All of the attractions, museums and restaurants throughout Philadelphia are welcome to use the badge.” 

    As a part of the larger marketing campaign, Frauenglass said a focus will be placed on social media influencers in Philadelphia and the other major markets being targeted.

    “Influencers are becoming much more prevalent in media plans,” he said. “They have incredible reach and it’s with audiences that are highly engaged.”

    A 60-second commercial titled “Anything But Silent” also debuted Tuesday, showing Philly as the the foundation of the United States in preparation for the semiquincentennial celebrations. The ad will be widely distributed outside of the agency’s usual scope, Frauenglass said. 

    “This commercial is about building awareness of Philadelphia’s historical significance and laying the foundation that we’re not celebrating for just one day — July Fourth,” he said. “Next year, we’ll be celebrating all year long.” 

    The campaign was announced less than a week after city officials unveiled a neighborhood-focused plan to incorporate walking tours and block parties into next year’s celebrations. In addition to appealing to a national audience, Frauenglass hopes the Visit Philadelphia campaign also resonates with locals.

    “It’s really to remind [residents] of how important Philadelphia is within our country,” he said. “We’re the birthplace of America. 2026 is a time worth staying here for and experiencing the city in a way that you never have.”

When a canceled flight threatened my meticulously planned itinerary, I had to trust my instincts, solve problems quickly and stay emotionally regulated. Each challenge enhanced my self-trust, emotional intelligence and resilience, qualities directly beneficial to leading my team through uncertainty and stress.

    My solo trip forced me to be present in the moment. Without phone service, I engaged fully with strangers on trains, at restaurants, in markets and had deep, authentic conversations. Each interaction reminded me of the power of presence in building genuine connections. Practicing authentic presence with strangers strengthened my ability to be more fully present with my team at StoneAge, creating deeper trust, empathy and effectiveness as a leader.

    If you’ve ever daydreamed about spontaneous beach getaways or last-minute weekend city hops, Frontier Airlines’ may seem like a dream come true. But while the promise of unlimited flights for just $299 might be enough to make any traveler click “buy,” a closer look at the fine print reveals a few important caveats.

    Here’s everything you need to know about Frontier’s GoWild! Pass—the good, the bad, and the blackout dates.

    Why the GoWild! Pass sounds so tempting

    • Ultra-low Entry Price: Through September 12, Frontier is offering its 2026–2027 GoWild! Annual Pass for just $299 (regularly $599). That’s less than the average cost of a single round-trip ticket with other major airlines.

    • Unlimited Flights: Yes, unlimited. Once you’re a passholder, you can book a $0.01 fare (plus taxes and fees) for any eligible Frontier-operated flight, as often as you want.

    • Bonus Months of Travel: Unlike previous annual passes, this version offers extra travel months starting now, instead of waiting until May 2026 to begin. That means you get more than 18 months of potential travel.

    • Domestic + International Destinations: The pass works for both domestic and international flights.

    • Miles Activity Extension: Each trip booked with the pass counts as activity that keeps your Frontier Miles from expiring. While GoWild! flights don’t earn miles, they do help preserve your account’s balance.

    The hidden terms that could cost you

    While the marketing makes this pass sound like a golden ticket, the reveal several important limitations that may affect its value depending on your travel style.

    1. Limited Flight Availability

    GoWild! fares are subject to availability, and Frontier does not guarantee last-seat access. That means you may be able to book a flight only if there are still open seats the day before departure. Popular routes can fill up quickly, especially on weekends or holidays.

    So don’t expect to fly on a whim to Miami during spring break or book a Friday night flight to Vegas.

    2. Long Blackout List

    Frontier has released an extensive list of blackout dates for 2025, 2026, and even 2027—including most major holidays, peak spring break weekends, and popular summer dates. These are completely blocked from booking with the pass.

    3. Bags, Seats, and Extras Cost Extra

    Your $299 pass gets you on the plane, but that’s about it. You’ll still have to pay separately for carry-on luggage, checked bags, seat selection, and priority boarding.   • ‘All fun and games until…’: Air Canada passenger tries the ‘window seat trick’ on 14-hour flight. Here’s why people say it won’t always work

    In the halcyon days of the 20th century, air travel was designed to be comfortable for all passengers—not just the ones in first or business class. Those days are long gone for we plebes in economy, unfortunately. The seats are small, the legroom nonexistent, and the refreshments subpar or nonexistent.

    Savvy travelers have turned to various tricks to make plane rides more palatable. Some are common-sense strategies like dressing in layers and booking early. Others are only known to seasoned travelers, like skiplagging. These aren’t without risks, however.

    A couple on an Air Canada flight to Australia recently tried their hand at a lesser-known technique for a superior flight experience. Emily (@emdwyaa) documented the experience in an 8-second TikTok.

    “Having a panic attack because we tried the aisle and window seat trick for a 14-hour flight,” Emily writes in a text overlay on the post.

    She captions it, “The most stressful boarding process before a 14 hour flight to Australia.”

    Her post has people fighting it out in the comments over whether the trick is a savvy move, an unnecessary gamble, or just bad behavior.

    Emily didn’t respond to an inquiry sent via TikTok direct message.

    How does it work?

    The aisle and window seat trick is simple: two people traveling together book the aisle and window seats in a row with three seats. Because middle seats are less desirable, they arguably increase their odds of getting the entire row to themselves.

    In Emily and her husband’s case, it was a success. Several seconds into the TikTok, she films the empty middle seat. A text overlay reads, “It worked.” In the caption, she describes the maneuver as “DIY business class.”

    Because it worked, the couple got to spend an entire 14-hour flight to Australia in their own private row. If it hadn’t, they could’ve ended up elbow to elbow with a stranger for over half a day.

    Not everyone is pleased with their stroke of good fortune, however.

    Tips for successful air travel

    The aisle and window seat trick is a gamble. You both could end up next to a flatulent, shoeless, snorer for the entire flight, after all.

    There are some ways to increase your chance of success.

    A full flight means even those undesirable middle seats will be booked. So don’t bother trying the hack if you’re traveling during peak times, like the holidays.

    Similarly, as most prefer to sit further up, select two seats in the rear of the plane. This increases your odds that the center one will remain empty.

    “I put Dramamine in the seat and hold the puke bag,” a commenter named Leigh offered. “Hope this helps.”

    Another suggested putting a personal item there, like your phone.

    Fair game versus foul play

    There is no policy against reserving an aisle and window seat in the hopes that no one takes that middle seat. Nevertheless, some cried foul.

    One vowed, “I’m taking that middle seat and farting for 14 hours straight.” Another charmer shared that he farts and takes his shoes off during flights.

    Someone else wondered why people have a problem with the aisle and window seat trick. “Because it creates a forced uncomfortable scenario when somebody does book that seat, and the couple proceeds to manifest unwanted conversation across this person for 14 hours,” explained a detractor.

    A second countered, “Actually it doesn’t. You just don’t talk to your travel partner bc it’s rude.”

    A third noted that the travel companions could simply offer to trade seats with the person in the middle.

    This solution didn’t please everyone. As one mocked, “‘Hey, my partner and I were really hoping that our greed would be rewarded, and now we’re awkwardly reaping the fruits of our labor—can you help us course correct by giving up the seat you ultimately paid for, for our comfort?””

    A few noted that most people would rather have a window or aisle seat, so, rather than being greedy, they’d likely be doing the person in the middle a favor by switching.

    Several said they’ve been the unlucky middle seat dweller in a situation when the two companions didn’t ask to change seats. They described people talking over them throughout the flight and treating them as their personal lazy susan.

    One said a father and daughter were so obnoxious they asked them to leave “me the [expletive] alone.”

    Not everyone blames travelers like Emily.

    “Airlines have made economy travel so uncomfortable that we have to resort to this,” a woman wrote. “Just make seats more comfortable.”

  • World’s oldest known nursing home discovered in ruins of ancient Christian city, dates back 1,600 years

    Archaeologists in Israel have uncovered a 1,600-year-old Christian care facility for the elderly – a remarkable find that may be the world’s oldest nursing home.

    The news, reported by Israel’s news agency TPS-IL, was announced by the University of Haifa on Aug. 18. 

    The care facility was found in the ruins of the ancient city of Hippos near the Sea of Galilee. The Christian city was a significant bishop’s seat in the region during the Byzantine era.

    While excavating the ruins, archaeologists from the University of Haifa’s Zinman Institute of Archaeology were struck by a floor design at the entrance of an ancient building.

    The mosaic’s message read, “Peace be with the elders,” in Koine Greek. It was found around 320 feet from Hippos’ central plaza, inside one of the city’s residential blocks.

    Dating back to the fourth or fifth century A.D., archaeologists are convinced that the building was a designated facility for older residents.

    “It shows that Byzantine society established not only religious centers but also places dedicated to dignity and care for its seniors.”

    Some sources from the fifth and sixth centuries record the existence of elderly care facilities, making the discovery unique but not entirely without precedent. The inscription may also be the first physical evidence of such an institution.

    Researchers posit that the message was intentionally placed at the entrance of the building, in order to designate its purpose to elderly residents and visitors.

    The symbols on the mosaic – cyrpress trees, fruit and Egyptian geese – also complement the Greek text, with researchers interpreting them as deliberate choices.

    For example, cypress trees were associated with everlasting life, while fruits symbolized abundance and eternal life. Egyptian geese, on the other hand, often represented blessed souls in ancient iconography.

    Directly referencing elders in such a manner is exceptionally rare in ancient inscriptions, underscoring the significance of the find.

    In a statement, Michael Eisenberg, Ph.D., said that the mosaic “offers a tangible, dated, and clear indication of an institution designed for the elderly.”

    “This is living proof that care and concern for the elderly are not just a modern idea, but were part of social institutions and concepts as far back as about 1,600 years ago,” Eisenberg observed, according to TPS-IL.

    The Jubilee, also known as the Holy Year, is in full swing with visitors flocking to Rome, the Vatican City and across Italy.

    In St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to preside over the canonization of Carlo Acutis, a millennial computer programmer, and Italian student and avid outdoorsman Pier Giorgio Frassati.

    Fr. Charlie Gallagher, pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in Washington, D.C., has traveled to Rome for the ceremony.

    “The atmosphere here is already one of expectant joy, even electric,” Gallagher told Fox News Digital from Rome.

    “I took Pier Giorgio Frassati as my patron. When I decided to become a priest, I started corresponding with Giorgio’s niece, Wanda,” said Gallagher. “Pier Giorgio died in 1925. The next year, his sister Luciana gave birth to Wanda.”

    Gallagher has known Wanda for 20 years. He met with her as a seminarian in Rome and asked her how her uncle has impacted her.

    “With every corner of his heart, he models the most effective way to win our friends to Jesus Christ.”

    Gallagher said that even though Carlo Acutis was very smart, he did not always do well in school – even failing an exam.

    “His mom asked him why, and he said he had more important things to do, like spread devotion to the Eucharist by promoting Eucharistic miracles.”

    Gallagher lived in Rome for four years while a seminarian at the North American College in 2007.

    He said that while being in the capital city, so many memories have come to mind. “It is a blessing to visit my favorite churches and to enjoy some authentic Carbonara!”

    It was Pope Francis, according to The Associated Press, who fervently willed the Acutis sainthood case forward — convinced that the church needed someone like him to attract young Catholics to the faith while addressing the promises and perils of the digital age.

    Pope Leo inherited the Acutis cause, but he, too, has pointed to technology — especially artificial intelligence — as one of the main challenges facing humanity.

    Frassati lived his faith through “constant, humble, mostly hidden service to the poorest of Turin,” noted the Frassati Catholic Academy. “He lived simply and gave away food, money or anything that anyone asked of him.” He died in his early 20s of polio.

    Lisbon — Two days after Portugal’s worst-ever electric streetcar crash killed 16 people and left more than 20 others from across the globe injured, forensics teams in Lisbon said Friday that they had identified nearly all of the victims, many of whom were crushed to death when the famed Elevador da Gloria funicular hurtled out of control down a steep hill, derailed and careened into a building

    While names have not yet been disclosed, Portugal’s attorney-general said Friday morning that the death toll includes two South Koreans, two Swiss nationals, one French national and five Portuguese citizens.

    A U.S. State Department spokesperson confirmed to CBS News on Thursday that one American was also among the 16 people killed, but they did not identify the victim. 

    “Our staff in Lisbon and here in the United States are working tirelessly to provide consular assistance to the victim and their family.  We extend our condolences to the victims and families of all those affected,” the official said. “The Embassy is working closely with local authorities to assist U.S. citizens in the affected area, and continues to monitor the situation closely. Due to privacy considerations, we have no additional details at this time.”

    There is also “a high possibility,” based on recovered documents and other evidence, that the victims include two Canadians, one German and one Ukrainian, according to the head of the national investigative police, Luís Neves. CBS News’ partner network BBC News said Friday that Portuguese police believed three British nationals were also among those killed.

    At least 21 other passengers were injured, including people from Portugal, Spain, Israel, Brazil, Italy and France, according to the head of Portugal’s National Health Service.

    Millions of people ride Lisbon’s iconic yellow-and-white funicular cars each year. It’s a popular experience for foreign tourists, and the Elevador da Gloria, at almost 140 years old, has long been a big attraction. In 2024, an estimated 29 million foreigners visited Portugal, many passing through the capital and its quiet, cobblestone streets and hills. 

    But the electric street cars and hillside funiculars are also part of everyday life for many locals.

    A Portuguese charity based on the hill near the top of the Elevador da Gloria funicular confirmed Friday that four of its employees were killed in the accident. They were believed to have been commuting from work.

    “We have lost colleagues, friends and the people who we shared our daily lives as well as our mission”, the Santa Casa da Misericordia said in a statement. “We’re in a state of shock.”

    Lisbon Funicular Derails In Deadly Accident

    Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro and Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas attended a Mass in the early evening on Thursday near the site of the crash. Speaking to reporters outside the church, Rebelo de Sousa said: “This is a time of mourning. It’s the moment to mourn the dead… pray and think of the dead, and to support their friends and family.”

    The president also called for a clarification of the causes of the accident “as quickly as possible.”

    After midnight on Friday, and with few onlookers, workers lifted the mangled wreckage of the Elevador da Gloria car that crashed.

    As with most funiculars, two carriages linked by a steel cable operate in tandem: One carriage climbs up the hill as the other trundles slowly down. Early Wednesday evening, many people believe that cable snapped, causing the tragedy.

    Portuguese media showed officials inspecting the frayed ends of the cable that had connected the cars, which they had pulled up from underground, on Friday. According to a fire brigade official, the car coming down from the top of the hill was not able to slow down, entered a curve in the hill too fast, derailed, and then plowed into the cobblestone pavement and crashed.

    Cable and brake failures are two of the most common causes of streetcar accidents.

    The president of the Portuguese Order of the Engineers, Almeis Santos, told CBS News the accident appeared to have been caused by the rupture of the cable. 

    “It’s very strange… for this kind of cable. It’s not normal and it’s almost impossible to have [a] sudden rupture,” he said.

    Gloria Funicular Attracts Tourism All Year Around

    Santos said if the cable did snap suddenly, neither the manual nor automatic brakes on the funicular would have been sufficient to hold back the streetcars, which, when loaded with passengers weigh around 20 tons each.

    Carris, the company that operates the Elevador da Gloria, has said regular inspections — including daily checks — had been carried out as required.

    Portugal’s Air and Rail Accident Investigation Unit was expected to release a preliminary report on the technical cause of the funicular crash later Friday. In 45 days, Portugal’s national police will then issue their report on any potential criminality involved in the crash.  

    The mayor said Lisbon and its three million residents would observe three days of mourning following the disaster.

    Spirit Airlines filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in less than a year last week and announced that it’s ending service to a dozen cities in October. Now, rival airlines are swooping in.

    On the heels of the bankruptcy news last week, Frontier Airlines, which has a 35% overlap with Spirit on routes, per CNBC, announced it is adding 20 new routes this winter. And on Thursday, United Airlines launched ticket sales for 15 new flights beginning January 6 for Spirit-heavy hubs, such as Chicago, Houston, Las Vegas, Fort Lauderdale, and Orlando.

    “If Spirit suddenly goes out of business, it will be incredibly disruptive, so we’re adding these flights to give their customers other options if they want or need them,” said Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of global network planning and alliances, in a press release.

    In response to United and Quayle’s quip, Spirit’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications, Duncan Dee, told Entrepreneur in a statement that it is “wishful thinking on the part of a high-cost airline looking to eliminate a low-cost competitor” and the company is “focused on competing and running a great operation,” though it appreciates “the obsession certain airline executives have with us.”

    “Spirit is responsible for making low fares available to consumers for more than 30 years, whether they fly with us or not,” the statement says. “We have every expectation to continue doing so for many years to come.”

    The cities Spirit is exiting in October include: Albuquerque, New Mexico; Birmingham, Alabama; Boise, Idaho; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Columbia, South Carolina; Macon, Georgia; Portland, Oregon; Salt Lake City, Utah; and four California cities (Oakland, San Diego, Sacramento, and San Jose).

    “We apologize to our Guests for any inconvenience this may cause and will reach out to those with affected reservations to notify them of their options, including a refund,” Spirit said in a statement about the cancellations.

  • Americans plan to spend less this holiday season, survey shows

    Americans are expected to rein in spending this holiday season by the most amount since the pandemic, as they continue to face pressure from high prices and tariffs.

    That’s according to a new survey released by accounting firm PwC on Wednesday, which predicts Americans this year will reduce holiday spending to $1,552 a person on average, which is 5% less than in 2024. That includes spending on gifts, travel, food and entertainment. 

    If the predictions come to pass, it would represent the most significant drop in holiday spending since 2020. While consumers are not cutting purchases entirely, they are getting smarter about how they stretch their dollars, according to Alison Furman, PwC’s consumer markets industry leader.

    “Inflation is kind of creeping in, and they’re seeing it affect their wallets,” Furman told CBS MoneyWatch. 

    For its report, PwC surveyed 4,000 Americans from Gen Zs to baby boomers over a two-week period from June to July, when tariff-related uncertainty was more pronounced. But any perceived changes in the economy over the next couple of months could alter consumers’ attitude toward spending.

    “Economic signals continue to shift and, between now and December, purchasing behavior could evolve in response,” the report states.

    The generation expected to tighten their spending the most is Gen Z. Respondents from this cohort, ages 17 to 28, said they expect to reduce their holiday budgets by 23% — more than any other generation in the study. That’s due in part to the tough job market facing young Americans, along with rising costs.

    Overall, 84% of consumers expect to cut back spending in general over the next six months, according to the report.

    A slowdown in spending could spell trouble for retailers who depend on holiday sales to shore up revenue toward the end of the year. Since 2019, holiday sales during the months of November and December have accounted for 19% of total retail revenue for the year, according to a National Retail Federation report

    Tariffs, high prices top of mind

    The projected pullback in consumer holiday spending underscores Americans’ shaky confidence in the state of the economy. Worries over inflation and tariffs have already led shoppers to be more judicious with their spending.

    Discretionary spending on categories like indoor and outdoor dining were down in August, according to the U.S. Conference Board’s latest consumer confidence index each month. Meanwhile, average 12-month inflation expectations among consumers increased to 6.2%, from 5.7% in July.

    Tighter spending

    PwC expects consumers to approach holiday shopping “more deliberately,” with an eye toward saving money, amid ongoing concerns over tariffs and high prices. 

    Furman said the potential for tariff-related price increases has already made the consumers “very conscious of trying to buy things at a discount.”Case in point: Internet searches for “discount” and “coupon code” have climbed by 11% over the past year, according to the survey.

    With deals in mind, consumers are expected to do a large portion, or 39%, of their total planned holiday gift spending, during the time between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday, according to the PwC report. With heightened traffic expected during that five-day stretch, Furman advises shoppers to start looking early for popular items.

    “If you’re interested in very hot items, knowing that they’re going to likely be on shelves sooner, to guarantee that you’ll get them, you may want to shop for them in those early promotional cycles, versus wait until the five-day frenzy,” she said.

  • Commentary: I got COVID for the first time and can’t smell. But RFK Jr.’s vaccine policies still stink

    For five years, I dodged every bullet.

    I don’t know how I managed to beat COVID-19 for so long, even as family, friends and colleagues got hit with the coronavirus. Although I took precautions from the beginning, with masking and vaccinations, I was also out in public a lot for work and travel.

    But my luck has finally run out, and it must have been the air travel that did me in. I returned from a cross-country trip with a razor blade sore throat and a stubborn headache, followed by aches and pains.

    The first test was positive.

    I figured it had to be wrong, given my super-immunity track record.

    The second test was even more positive.

    So I’ve been quarantined in a corner of the house, reaching alternately for Tylenol and the thermometer. Everything is a little fuzzy, making it hard to distinguish between the real and the imagined.

    For instance, how can it be true that just as I get COVID for the first time, the news is suddenly dominated by COVID-related stories?

    It has to be a fever-induced hallucination. There’s no other way to explain why, as COVID surges yet again with another bugger of a strain, the best tool against the virus — vaccine — is under full assault by the leaders of the nation.

    They are making it harder, rather than easier, to get medicine recommended by the overwhelming majority of the legitimate, non-crackpot wing of the medical community.

    Under the new vaccine policies, prices are up. Permission from doctors is needed. Depending on your age or your home state, you could be out of luck.

    Meanwhile, President Trump fired Susan Monarez, the head of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, essentially for putting her own professional integrity and commitment to public service above crackpot directives from a cabal of vaccine skeptics.

    And following Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s cancellation of $500 million in mRNA vaccine research, Trump is demanding that pharmaceutical companies show proof that vaccines work.

    My eyes are red and burning, but can COVID be entirely to blame?

    I got a booster before my travels, even though I knew it might not stand up to the new strain of COVID. It’s possible I have a milder case than I might have had without the vaccine. But on that question and many others, as new waves keep coming our way, wouldn’t the smart move be more research rather than less?

    Trump downplayed the virus when it first surfaced in 2019 and 2020. Then he blamed it on China. He resisted masking, and lemmings by the thousands got sick and died. Then he got COVID himself. At one point, he recommended that people get the vaccine.

    Now he’s putting on the brakes?

    My headache is coming back, my eyes are still burning, and unless my Tylenol is laced with LSD, I think I just saw a clip in which Kennedy and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth attempted 50 pull-ups and 100 push-ups in 10 minutes.

    I appreciate the health and fitness plug, and because Kennedy and I are the same age — 71 — it’s impressive to see him in the gym.

    But there’s something that has to be said about the Kennedy-Hegseth workout tape:

    They’re cheating.

    Take a look for yourself, and don’t be fooled by the tight T-shirts worn by these two homecoming kings.

    Those were not full chin-ups or push-ups.

    Not even close.

    Cutting corners is the wrong message to send to the nation’s children, or to any age group. And how is anyone going to make it to the gym if they come down with COVID because they couldn’t get vaccinated?

    Honestly, the whole thing has to be a fever dream I’m having, because in the middle of the workout, Kennedy said, and I quote, “It was President Trump who inspired us to do this.”

    He is many things, President Trump. Fitness role model is not one of them, no matter how many times he blasts out of sand traps on company time.

    Getting back to cutting corners, Kennedy said in slashing mRNA research that “we have studied the science,” with a news release link to a 181-page document purportedly supporting his claim that the vaccines “fail to protect effectively.”

    That document was roundly eviscerated by hordes of scientists who were aghast at the distortions and misinterpretations by Kennedy.

    “It’s either staggering incompetence or willful misrepresentation,” said Jake Scott, an infectious-disease physician and Stanford University professor, writing for the media company STAT. “Kennedy is using evidence that refutes his own position to justify dismantling tools we’ll desperately need when the next pandemic arrives.”

    I lost my sense of smell a few days ago, but even I can tell you that stinks.

  • How Buc-ee’s became the gateway to the great American road trip

    For some Labor Day travelers, adventure is just a pit stop away — to a popular convenience store chain called Buc-ee’s. 

    Buc-ee’s opened its first store in Lake Jackson, Texas, in 1982. Since then, Buc-ee’s has become a must-visit destination for roadtrippers across the country, filling up on gas, snacks — and yes, even some good old-fashioned barbecue.

    Buc-ee’s pitmaster Randy Pauly is overseeing what amounts to the biggest barbecue in all of Texas. The chain cooks around the clock to feed their 54 locations across 11 states with hot, fresh barbecue 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

    “It’s not just creating the recipes. It’s about making sure each and every day, no matter what store you show up to, it’s exactly what we started with. Exactly what you remember last time you were here,” Pauly told “CBS Mornings.”

    Pauly is currently ranked No. 2 in the world for his competitive barbecue brisket. He’s also responsible for the company’s famed brisket sandwich — perfect for customers on the go.

    “We call it dashboard dining,” said Pauly, who said the key to good barbecue is not rushing it.

    But there’s more than barbecue at Buc-ee’s. There’s also a bakery and jerky bar. People also stop by for the gas, megastore, Buc-ee’s branded boutique, smiling beaver mascot, and more. It also boasts the cleanest restrooms in the U.S.

    “We consider this a destination experience,” Richard Sebastian, Buc-ee’s head of operations, told “CBS Mornings.” He said it could be described as a “sensory overload.”

    Long weekends are their specialty. Sebastian said Labor Day weekend is among the top five busiest weekends of the calendar year.

    For Sebastian, success comes down to three things: friendliness, cleanliness and in-stock.

    Brand expert Greg Silverman, global director of brand economics at Interbrand, explained how the chain has become so successful. 

    “It’s mostly about joy and fun,” Silverman said. “They’ve created a whole new polarity of trade, where it is an experience. It’s like the Disneyland of the convenience store industry.”

  • Downturn in international travel to U.S. may last beyond summer, experts warn

    LAS VEGAS — For a few hopeful weeks this summer, a bright billboard on the major highway linking Toronto to New York greeted Canadian drivers with a simple message: “Buffalo Loves Canada.”


    What You Need To Know

    • They say factors like Trump’s tariffs, strict immigration policies and rhetoric have made international tourists feel unwelcome
    • U.S. government data confirms an overall drop-off in international arrivals

    The marketing campaign, which included a $500 gift card giveaway, was meant to show Buffalo’s northern neighbors they were welcome, wanted and missed.

    At first, it seemed like it might work, said Patrick Kaler, CEO of the local tourism organization Visit Buffalo Niagara. More than 1,000 people entered the giveaway. But by the end of July, it was clear the city’s reliable summer wave of Canadian visitors would not arrive this year.

    Buffalo’s struggle reflects a broader downturn in international tourism to the U.S. that travel analysts warn could persist well into the future. From northern border towns to major hot spots like Las Vegas and Los Angeles, popular travel destinations reported hosting fewer foreign visitors this summer.

    Experts and some local officials attribute the trend that first emerged in February to President Donald Trump’s return to the White House. They say his tariffs, immigration crackdown and repeated jabs about the U.S. acquiring Canada and Greenland alienated travelers from other parts of the world.

    “To see the traffic drop off so significantly, especially because of rhetoric that can be changed, is so disheartening,” Kaler said.

    Forecasts show U.S. losing foreign travelers

    The World Travel & Tourism Council projected ahead of Memorial Day that the U.S. would be the only country among the 184 it studied where foreign visitor spending would fall in 2025. The finding was “a clear indicator that the global appeal of the U.S. is slipping,” the global industry association said.

    “The world’s biggest travel and tourism economy is heading in the wrong direction,” Julia Simpson, the council’s president and CEO, said. “While other nations are rolling out the welcome mat, the U.S. government is putting up the ‘closed’ sign.”

    Travel research firm Tourism Economics, meanwhile, predicted this month that the U.S. would see 8.2% fewer international arrivals in 2025, an improvement from its earlier forecast of a 9.4% decline but well below the numbers of foreign visitors to the country before the COVID-19 pandemic.

    “The sentiment drag has proven to be severe,” the firm said, noting that airline bookings indicate “the sharp inbound travel slowdown” of May, June and July would likely persist in the months ahead.

    Deborah Friedland, managing director at the financial services firm Eisner Advisory Group, said he U.S. travel industry faced multiple headwinds — rising travel costs, political uncertainty and ongoing geopolitical tensions.

    Since returning to office, Trump has doubled down on some of the hard-line policies that defined his first term, reviving a travel ban targeting mainly African and Middle Eastern countries, tightening rules around visa approvals and ramping up mass immigration raids. At the same time, the push for tariffs on foreign goods that quickly became a defining feature of his second term gave some citizens elsewhere a sense they were unwanted.

    “Perception is reality,” Friedland said.

    International arrivals down from Western Europe, Asia and Africa

    Organizers of an international swing dancing said an impression of America’s hostility to foreigners led them to postpone the event, which had been scheduled to take place this month in the Harlem area of New York City.

    About three months into Trump’s second term, international competitors began pulling out of the world finals of the International Lindy Hop Championships, saying they felt unwelcome, event co-producer Tena Morales said. About half of attendees each year come from outside the U.S., primarily from Canada and France, she said.

    Contest organizers are considering whether to host the annual competition in another country until Trump’s presidency ends, Morales said.

    “The climate is still the same and what we’re hearing is still the same, that (dancers) don’t want to come here,” she said.

    The nation’s capital, where the Trump administration in recent weeks deployed National Guard members and took over management of Union Station, also has noticed an impact.

    Local tourism officials have projected a 5.1% dip in international visitors for the year. Marketing organization Destination DC said last week it planned to “counter negative rhetoric” about the city with a campaign that would feature residents and highlight the “more personal side” of Washington.

    U.S. government data confirms an overall drop-off in international arrivals during the first seven months of the year. The number of overseas visitors, a category that doesn’t include travelers from Mexico or Canada, declined by more than 3 million, or 1.6%, compared to the same period a year earlier, according to preliminary figures from the National Travel and Tourism Office.

    As a tourist generator, Western Europe was down 2.3%, with visitors from Denmark dropping by 19%, from Germany by 10%, and from France by 6.6%. A similar pattern surfaced in Asia, where the U.S. data showed double-digit decreases in arrivals from Hong Kong, Indonesia and the Philippines. Fewer residents of countries throughout Africa also had traveled to the U.S. as of July.

    However, visitors from some countries, among them Argentina, Brazil, Italy and Japan, have arrived in greater numbers.

    Filling a void left by Canadian tourists

    Neither did all U.S. destinations report sluggish summers for tourism.

    On eastern Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula, which straddles Lake Michigan and Green Bay, a steady stream of loyal Midwest visitors helped deliver a strong summer for local businesses, according to Jon Jarosh, a spokesperson for Destination Door County.

    Many business owners reported a noticeable uptick in foot traffic after a quieter start to the season, Jarosh said, and sidewalks were bustling and restaurants were packed by midsummer.

    Executives from the major U.S. airlines said last month that American passengers booking premium airfares helped fill their international flights and that demand for domestic flights was picking up after a weaker than expected showing in the first half of 2025.

    The Federal Aviation Administration said it was gearing up for what is expected to be the busiest Labor Day weekend in 15 years. Bookings for U.S. airlines were up about 2% compared to 2024 for the long holiday weekend that started Thursday, aviation analytics firm Cirium said.

    As the summer winds down, though, the absence of foreign visitors in Buffalo was still visible, according to Kaler, the head of Visit Buffalo Niagara.

    Canada sent over 20.2 million visitors to the U.S. last year, more than any other country, U.S. government data showed. But this year, residents of Canada have been among the most reluctant to visit.

    In a major U-turn, more U.S. residents drove into Canada in June and July than Canadians making the reverse trip, according to Canada’s national statistical agency. Statistics Canada said it was the first time that happened in nearly two decades with the exception of two months during the pandemic.

    In July alone, the number of Canadian residents returning from the U.S. by car was down 37% from the year before, and return trips by plane fell 26%, the agency said.

    As a result, Visit Buffalo Niagara shifted its marketing efforts this summer to cities like Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago. Amateur children’s sporting events also helped fill the void left by Canadian tourists.

    “We will always welcome Canadians back when the time is right,” Kaler said. “I don’t want Canadians to feel like we see them as just dollar signs or a transaction at our cash registers. They mean more to us that that.”
