• Joshua Allen, ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ winner, killed by train in Fort Worth

    [ad_1]

The man who died after being struck by a train in Fort Worth on Tuesday has been identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office as “So You Think You Can Dance” star Joshua Demon Allen.

Allen, 36, won season 4 of the reality-television dance competition in 2008.

A family member confirmed his death to the celebrity gossip site TMZ.

Allen was from Fort Worth and graduated from North Crowley High School, the Star-Telegram reported in 2008, shortly after Allen appeared on the TV show.

The school threw a parade for Allen after his victory, according to the Star-Telegram’s archives.

North Texas native Joshua Allen, winner of the 2008 season of the TV competition "So You Think You Can Dance?" poses for “The Last Picture Show” on Nov. 24, 2008, at Fort Worth’s Bass Hall, where he performed as a child.

Two days before Allen left for Los Angeles to compete on the show, his 13-year-old cousin was shot and killed. Allen’s audition aired the night his cousin was killed, according to the Star-Telegram’s archives.

“He had a natural gift for movement — no formal training, yet he could watch something once and his body just knew how to do it,” Allen’s representative Christina Price told the LA Times on Wednesday. ”Beyond his talent, he gave back, teaching kids in Texas through dance workshops.”

In the season that Allen won “So You Think You Can Dance,” the show’s runner-up was Stephen “tWitch” Boss, who died by suicide in 2022.

Allen’s career included appearances in 2010’s “Step Up 3D,” an episode of “American Horror Story,” and the 2011 remake of “Footloose,” according to IMDb.

  • Video of train submerged in India’s floodwaters is AI-generated

    [ad_1]

Heavy monsoon rains triggered deadly floods and landslides across India in August, but a video circulating online showing a train being swept away in floodwaters was made with AI. The one who made the clip confirmed to AFP he made it using different AI tools and the video contains visual inconsistencies indicative of AI-generated content.

“Train submerged in Ganga River in Patna,” reads Hindi-language overlaid text on a clip shared on Instagram on August 21, 2025.

Patna is a city in the eastern Indian state of Bihar.

The video shows several compartments of a train submerged in a surging river while people are stranded at the foot of a bridge pier. Men, some of them with handheld microphones, can be seen standing at the river bank and over the bridge.

Rivers have flooded several cities in Bihar displacing more than 2.5 million people across 10 districts in August (archived link).

Screenshot of the false Instagram post captured August 27, 2025, with a red X added by AFP

The video was shared in similar posts on Facebook and Instagram alongside claims it showed a genuine train accident.

India has seen several deadly flooding disasters in August in the northern Himalayan region (archived link).

Powerful torrents driven by intense rain smashed into Chisoti village in Indian-administered Kashmir on August 14, killing at least 65 people and leaving another 33 missing.

Floods on August 5 overwhelmed the Himalayan town of Dharali in India’s Uttarakhand state and buried it in mud. The likely death toll from that disaster is more than 70 but has not been confirmed.

Floods and landslides are common during the June-September monsoon season, but experts say climate change, coupled with poorly planned development, is increasing their frequency, severity and impact.

Social media users appeared to believe the clip to be genuine, with one commenting, “Oh god protect all”.

“It is a very terrible accident,” another user wrote.

    But the video is AI-generated.

A combination of reverse image search and subsequent keyword search found the video posted on Instagram on August 20 (archived link).

“Train in Patna falls in Ganga, AI edited,” its caption says.

“This video is completely Al generated and not real. It’s made only for entertainment and creativity purposes. Please don’t take it as real footage.”

Screenshot comparison between false post (L) and Instagram video

Screenshot comparison between false post (L) and Instagram video

The account has repeatedly uploaded similar AI-generated videos and states in its bio, ” AI Video Creator “.

Satish Toriyahi, owner of the Instagram account, told AFP on August 27 that he made the videos using “pro AI tools like Google VEO and Grok’s advanced version.”

“I first created a timeline by submitting a few seconds of prompt to Google’s tool and later edited it with the help of Premiere Pro and added sound to it,” Toriyahi told AFP via phone.

Despite the meteoric rise in AI technology, visual errors — like distorted text on train compartments and microphones as well as unnatural movement of water — still appear. Careful examination of an image is a key tool for determining authenticity.

AFP has previously debunked false claims about monsoon floods in India as well as fabricated content created with AI.

Operator killed, 23 others injured after train strikes fallen tree in New Jersey

    [ad_1]

MANSFIELD TWP., New Jersey — One person is dead and 16 others are injured after a train accident Monday morning in New Jersey.

It happened just after 6 a.m. on the New Jersey River Line Light Rail track near US 130 in Mansfield Township.

The train was traveling southbound from Trenton when it struck a tree just north of Roebling Station.

The train operator was killed, according to officials.

The train had 42 customers on board at the time of the incident. Of the passengers, 23 sustained non-life-threatening injuries, which are said to be mostly minor. The other 19 were accommodated by a bus.

A large piece of a tree could be seen under the front of the train.

People were also seen being removed from the scene on stretchers.

NJ Transit River Line is suspended in both directions between Florence and Trenton. A substitute bus service is being provided.

Route 130 southbound between Burlington and Kinkora roads is also closed.

ABC Philadelphia affiliate WPVI spoke with people who live nearby, who said they say they’ve never seen anything like this.

“We’ve never heard of an accident since the beginning. We’ve been here for about 40 years and we never never heard of an accident with the River Line,” a nearby neighbor said.

“We heard all the ambulance, the helicopters and we had to come down here to see and they told us that the River Line derailed, unfortunately, and some people may be hurt or possibly dead,” said another neighbor. “So keep everyone in your prayers [and] let everyone be ok.”

There is a staging area for the families of those injured at the River Front Motel.

New Jersey Transit Police are on scene and investigating.

India train crash leaves at least 8 dead, dozens injured as freight train plows into passenger train

    [ad_1]

New Delhi — At least eight people were killed and more than 50 others injured when a freight train slammed into a passenger train Monday in India. The crash happened in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, when the goods train hit the Kanchanjunga Express in the New Jalpaiguri area, derailing at least three of the passenger train’s cars.

The Kanchanjunga Express was travelling from Silchar in Assam state to Sealdah in Kolkata when the collision occurred.

Stark images broadcast on Indian TV news channels showed hundreds of people watching rescuers try to save passengers trapped in the mangled train cars, one of which was left jutting up into the air at a steep angle.

India’s national NDTV network said the relatively low death toll, given the severity of the crash, could be due to the fact that the freight train slammed into the rear carriages of the passenger train, which were not believed to be carrying passengers.

“Five people, including the loco[motive] pilot of the Kanchanjunga Express, died on the spot. Twenty-five people are injured,” Abhishek Roy, Additional Superintendent of Police for the Darjeeling Police District, told reporters at the scene, adding that efforts to rescue people trapped in the train continued.

Officials later raised the confirmed death toll to eight.

The accident forced a suspension of all train services on the Kolkata-Siliguri line, officials said.

“The rescue work is complete,” Jaya Verma Sinha, chairperson of the Indian Railway Board told reporters, adding that injured victims were being provided “the best possible treatment.”

Sinha said human error appeared likely to have caused the accident, as “it seems that the driver of the goods train disregarded the signal.”

A detailed investigation was expected to confirm the cause of the fatal crash.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the crash “saddening” and announced informal government relief payments of 200,000 Indian rupees (about $2,400) for the families of people killed in the incident and 50,000 rupees (about $600) for those left injured.

Indian Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced separate state compensation of 1 million rupees (about $12,000) for each family that had someone killed in the crash, and 250,000 rupees (about $3,000) for those injured.

India has one of the largest rail networks on the planet, but accidents are common. In June 2023, one of India’s deadliest train accidents, involving three trains in the eastern state of Odisha, killed almost 300 people and left more than 1,000 others injured.

Fairfax County police in Virginia have identified the three people who were killed after being struck by a train in Springfield, Virginia, on Wednesday night.

Diego Arriaza, 28, of Annandale, Yeraldin Pardo, 28, of Lincolnia, and an 8-year-old child were found after officers responded to the 7500 block of Accotink Park Road around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a train crash, police said.

All three were pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities believe Arriaza, Pardo and the child were on the northbound elevated train tracks when they encountered a traveling freight train. Arriaza was struck by the train, while Pardo and her 8-year-old fell from the bridge into Accotink Creek.

Police said they don’t think alcohol or speed were factors in the crash for the train’s engineer. Whether or not alcohol was a factor for those who were killed is still under investigation.

  • India train accident that killed nearly 300 people caused by signal system error, official says

India train accident that killed nearly 300 people caused by signal system error, official says

    [ad_1]

An electronic signaling system error led to the train derailment in India that killed nearly 300 people and injured hundreds more, officials said Sunday. The error caused a train to wrongly change tracks and crash into a freight train in India’s eastern state of Odisha, creating a disastrous pileup that involved a second passenger train as well.

Authorities worked to clear the mangled wreckage of the two passenger trains that derailed Friday night in Balasore district in Odisha in one of the country’s deadliest rail accidents in decades.

An Odisha government statement revised the death toll to 275 on Sunday. More than 850 others were injured as of Saturday night, according to officials. Earlier Saturday, the Indian army assisted police and the National Disaster Response Force, as well as other rescue teams, to search for survivors.

“We are not very hopeful of rescuing anyone alive,” Sudhanshu Sarangi, Odisha’s fire services chief told reporters on Saturday morning. Footage from the site of the accident showed bodies lined up along the train tracks while authorities transported injured survivors to hospitals. Odisha’s Chief Secretary Pradeep Jena said at the time that more than 200 ambulances were in service.

Jaya Verma Sinha, a senior railway official, said the preliminary investigations revealed that a signal was given to the high-speed Coromandel Express to run on the main track line, but the signal later changed, and the train instead entered an adjacent loop line where it rammed into a freight loaded with iron ore.

The collision flipped the Coromandel Express coaches onto another track, causing the incoming Yesvantpur-Howrah Express from the opposite side also to derail, she said.

The passenger trains, carrying 2,296 people, were not overspeeding, she said. Trains that carry goods are often parked on an adjacent loop line so the main line is clear for a passing train.

Verma said the root cause of the crash was related to an error in the electronic signaling system. She said a detailed investigation will reveal whether the error was human or technical.

The electronic interlocking system is a safety mechanism designed to prevent conflicting movements between trains. It also monitors the status of signals that tell drivers how close they are to a next train, how fast they can go and the presence of stationary trains on the track.

“The system is 99.9% error free. But 0.1% chances are always there for an error,” Verma said. To a question whether the crash could be a case of sabotage, she said “nothing is ruled out.”

On Sunday, a few shattered carriages, mangled and overturned, were the only remnants of the tragedy. Railway workers toiled under the sun’s glare to lay down blocks of cement to fix the broken tracks. A crew with excavators was removing mud and the debris to clear the crash site.

At one of the hospitals nearly 9 miles from the site, survivors spoke of the horror of the moment of the crash.

Pantry worker Inder Mahato could not remember the exact sequence of events, but said he heard a loud bang when the Coromandel Express crashed into the freight. The impact caused Mahato, who was in the bathroom, to briefly lose consciousness.

Moments later when he opened his eyes, he saw through the door that was forced open people writhing in pain, many of them already dead. Others were frantically trying to get out from the twisted wreckage of his rail car.

For hours, Mahato, 37, remained stuck in the train’s bathroom, before rescuers scaled up the wreckage and pulled him out.

“God saved me,” he said, lying on the hospital bed while recuperating from a hairline fracture in his sternum. “I am very lucky I am alive.”

Mahato’s friends weren’t so lucky. Four of them died in the crash, he said.

Meanwhile, many desperate relatives were struggling to identify the bodies of their loved ones because of the gruesomeness of the injuries. Few others were searching hospitals to check whether their relatives were alive.

In the same hospital where Mahato was recovering from his injuries, Bulti Khatun roamed outside the premises in a dazed state, holding an identity card of her husband who was onboard the Coromandel Express and traveling to southern Chennai city.

Khatun said she visited the morgue and other hospitals to look for him, but was unable to find him.

“I am so helpless,” she said, sobbing.

Fifteen bodies were recovered on Saturday evening and efforts continued overnight with heavy cranes being used to remove an engine that settled on top of a rail car. No bodies were found in the engine and the work was completed on Sunday morning, said Sudhanshu Sarangi, director-general of fire and emergency services in Odisha.

The crash occurred at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is focusing on the modernization of the British colonial-era railroad network in India, which has become the world’s most populous country with 1.42 billion people. Despite government efforts to improve safety, several hundred accidents occur every year on India’s railways, the largest train network under one management in the world.

Modi visited the crash site on Saturday and talked to rescue officials. He also visited a hospital to inquire about the injured, and spoke to some of them.

Modi told reporters he felt the pain of the crash victims. He said the government would do its utmost to help them and strictly punish anyone found responsible.

In 1995, two trains collided near New Delhi, killing 358 people in one of the worst rail accidents in India. In 2016, a passenger train slid off the tracks between the cities of Indore and Patna, killing 146 people.

Most such accidents in India are blamed on human error or outdated signaling equipment.

About 22 million people ride 14,000 trains across India every day, traveling on 40,000 miles of track.

Voorschoten, Netherlands — A passenger train slammed into a construction crane and derailed near The Hague in the early hours of Tuesday morning, sending two carriages into a field next to the tracks. One person died and 19 were hospitalized, Dutch emergency services said.

Police opened an investigation to establish if any crime was committed. Another independent probe was opened into the cause of the crash.

Television images showed people using temporary bridges and ladders to cross a narrow drainage canal running alongside the rails to reach the stricken train in the darkness. Many windows in the train carriages were broken. It was not clear if that happened during the accident or as passengers attempted to escape.

Two of the bright yellow and blue train carriages came to rest perpendicular to the tracks across the small canal and partially in a field. What appeared to be the front of the train was badly damaged. Other parts of the train were partially derailed.

Video from inside the train in the immediate aftermath of the crash showed chaotic scenes as passengers tried to get out of the wreckage in darkness.

The four-carriage passenger train was carrying about 50 passengers at the time of the crash.

John Voppen, CEO of the rail network company Pro Rail, said that the passenger train and a freight train both hit a crane that was being used to carry out maintenance work. He said the crane was on tracks that were not being used by train traffic and it is not clear how the trains collided with the crane.

“We don’t understand how this could have happened,” he told reporters at a news conference.

The identity of the person killed in the accident was not immediately released and it was not clear if the person was on the train or part of the maintenance team that had been at work on the rails between the cities of Leiden and The Hague when the crash happened around 3:25 a.m. local time in the town of Voorschoten.

Railway company NS also said in a statement that a passenger train, a freight train and a construction crane were involved in a collision, but the company gave no further details.

“Like everyone else, I’m full of questions and we want to know exactly what happened,” NS CEO Wouter Koolmees said in a statement. “A thorough investigation must be carried out. At the moment, all attention is focused on the wellbeing of our travelers and colleagues.”

The regional coordinator of emergency services said that 11 of the injured passengers were treated in homes near the line and 19 were transported in a fleet of ambulances to five hospitals, including a “calamity hospital” opened in the central city of Utrecht.

“A terrible train accident near Voorschoten, where unfortunately one person died and many people were injured. My thoughts are with the relatives and with all the victims. I wish them all the best,” Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said in a tweet.

Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima also expressed their sympathy in a tweet.

Ingrid de Roos, a spokeswoman for local fire services, told news show WNL that a small fire broke out at the rear of the train but was quickly extinguished.

Video has emerged of the moment that a passenger train and cargo train collided in Greece late Tuesday night, killing almost 60 people in the country’s deadliest-ever rail disaster. The video from a surveillance camera shows one of the trains approaching before a bright flash of light and a massive explosion.

More than 50 people were still hospitalized Thursday after the fiery crash, which has sparked a fierce debate over the state of the European nation’s public transport network, as the cause of the disaster appeared to have been a case of human error.

The confirmed death toll climbed Thursday to 57 as more badly burned remains were removed from the wreckage, Greece’s fire service said.

Officials still haven’t said exactly how the two trains ended up on a collision course on the same track, but the man in charge of a station in central Greece who was arrested Wednesday in connection with the crash has reportedly accepted “responsibility.”

The station master who was on duty in the city of Larissa, about 15 miles southwest of the crash site, when the crash happened “confessed” responsibility for the accident, a federal government spokesman said Thursday.

“I believe the responsibility, the negligence, the error has been confessed by the station master,” Yiannis Economou told journalists.

But many Greeks, including rail network workers who went on strike Thursday over the disaster, have decried the nation’s poor rail safety record.

The country’s federal Transportation Minister Kostas Karamanlis announced his resignation Wednesday, “as a basic indication of respect for the memory of the people who died so unfairly.”

He called it “the least he could do to honor the memory of the victims” as he spoke on live television, adding that he was taking responsibility for “long-standing failures” in the country’s transport network.

Karamanlis said he’d made “every effort” to improve the nation’s railway system, but accepted that it was “in a state that doesn’t befit the 21st century.”

Many of those killed and injured on the train were said to be university students returning for classes after a break.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Wednesday called the collision “a horrific rail accident without precedent in our country,” and he vowed that a complete and independent investigation would determine the cause. He said the crash appeared to have been “mainly due to a tragic human error.”

  • Evacuation order lifted for residents near Ohio train derailment

Evacuation order lifted for residents near Ohio train derailment

    [ad_1]

Officials on Wednesday informed residents they could return to their homes about five days after a toxic 50-car train derailment near the Ohio-Pennsylvania border forced evacuations.

Authorities made the announcement lifting the evacuation order at a press conference Wednesday evening in East Palestine, Ohio. East Palestine Fire Chief Keith Drabick said that air and water samples determined that the evacuation area, which covered about a one-mile radius, was safe for residents.

“The evacuation order has been lifted, if you were asked to evacuate your residence due to the incident in East Palestine, you are permitted to return home. Please return in a safe and orderly manner,” Beaver County Emergency Services tweeted Wednesday.

On Feb. 3. about 50 cars derailed in East Palestine as a train was carrying a variety of freight from Madison, Illinois, to Conway, Pennsylvania, rail operator Norfolk Southern said. No injuries were reported.

On Feb. 4, officials issued evacuation orders to hundreds of nearby residents due to the release of toxic chemicals from five of the derailed tanker cars. On Feb. 5, authorities warned residents who had declined to evacuate to do so because of the danger of a potential explosion

Crews slowly released vinyl chloride from the five rail cars into a trough that was then ignited, creating a large plume above the village of East Palestine. Authorities had been closely monitoring the air quality in the evacuation area.

Environmental Protection Agency official James Justice told reporters Tuesday night that EPA investigators had so far been seeing “very few detections,” of dangerous chemical fumes.

“And the detections we have been seeing for the chemicals we’re monitoring for have been very low,” Justice said.

National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Railroad Administration are investigating the incident.

During Wednesday’s news conference, Evan Lambert, a Washington, D.C.-based correspondent for NewsNation, was arrested while doing a live shot in the back of the room. Lambert was pushed to the ground, cuffed and then arrested, video showed

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine commented on the incident during the news conference, saying Lambert had the right to do his job.

“That person had a right to be reporting,” DeWine told reporters. “They should have been allowed to report if they were in any way hampered from reporting that that certainly is is is wrong and it’s not anything that I approve, in fact I vehemently disapprove of it.”

According to a statement from News Nation Bureau Chief Mike Viqueira, Lambert was being held in Columbiana County Jail and has been charged with criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct.

“First, Evan is safe and calm, and continues to act with professionalism and integrity that he brings to his work everyday,”Viqueira said. “As you see from the videos, he was doing his job — what hundreds of journalist do without incident — reporting to the public on a matter of urgent, critical interest to our audience.”

    [ad_1]

In yet another incident, the Gandhinagar-Mumbai Vande Bharat Superfast Express hit cattle between Udvada and Vapi stations in Gujarat on Thursday evening. The collision caused a minor dent on the train’s front panel, a railway official was quoted by news agency PTI.

This is the fourth such incident involving the semi-high-speed train on the route since it began operating two months ago.

Sumit Thakur, chief public relations officer of Western Railway, said the incident occurred near level crossing gate no 87 between Udvada and Vapi around 6.23 pm. “There was a minor dent in the front portion with no operational issues. The dent will be attended to tonight,” he said.

The train journey resumed at 6.35 pm after a brief halt.

A couple of similar incidents were reported previously. A cattle runover incident occurred with the Vande Bharat train near Atul in Gujarat’s Valsad towards the end of October. The train was on its journey from Mumbai Central to Gandhinagar when the incident happened.
