Josue Levi Cuevas Santana of Lawrence was issued a criminal summons for negligent operation, speeding, using a mobile device while driving and failure to move over for an emergency vehicle after the crash Saturday in Salisbury, state police said.

In December 2023, 1,038 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes nationwide β with more than a quarter of those fatalities occurring during the Christmas and New Year holiday periods according to the latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Nighttime driving is significantly more dangerous than daytime driving: 30% of drivers involved in fatal crashes between 6 p.m. and 5:59 a.m. were drunk.

To mark National Older Driver Safety Awareness Week from Dec. 1-5, AAA Northeast is spotlighting the rising number of fatal traffic crashes involving older drivers across the United States.
Between 2014 and 2023, the population of people 65 and older in the United States increased by 28%. During this same time, the number of older drivers involved in fatal crashes increased by 41%, while the number of older licensed drivers increased by 38%.

A woman was decapitated by a garbage truck when she was crossing the street Wednesday in Orange County, according to authorities.
Maria Rubalcava de Ruesga, 69, of Santa Ana, was crossing the street around 7:56 a.m. near Shelton and Bishop streets when she was hit by a garbage truck making a right turn on Shelton, according to a Santa Ana Police Department news release.
Officers from the police department got multiple calls about the traffic collision and along with the Orange County Fire Authority, responded to the scene, according to the release.
The truck had been going east on Bishop Street and making a turn on the roundabout when it hit the woman as she was crossing the street, authorities said.
ABC7 reported that the woman had been decapitated in the collision.
Children and families from the nearby Pio Pico Dual Language Academy were also nearby during the incident, according to the outlet.
The Santa Ana Unified School District will be providing support for witnesses of the crash.
The Santa Ana Police Departmentβs Collision Investigation Unit will be investigating the crash, according to the release. Anyone with more information has been asked to contact the Santa Ana Police Departmentβs Traffic Division at (714) 245-8200.
HAMILTON β Rico Lauranzano, a 31-year-old Beverly resident, died from severe injuries received in single motorcycle crash Thursday night on Bay Road.
On Thursday around 7:50 p.m., Hamilton Police and Fire Departments responded to the area of 651 Bay Road, Route 1A, for a possible crash involving a motorcycle. Hamilton police arrived to find a severely damaged motorcycle on the sidewalk across from 651 Bay Road and a helmet in the roadway. After searching the adjacent property, officers found a man, later identified as Lauranzano, who was severely injured.

OAKLAND β An attempted armed robbery Wednesday afternoon in Oakland resulted in a shooting and the suspects later crashed their car in Hayward, police said.
The episode kicked off just before 3 p.m. near the intersection of International Boulevard and Durant Avenue in East Oakland, according to the Oakland Police Department.
An investigation indicated several armed suspects approached and threatened a security guard, who was also armed, police said. The guard fired at the suspects, but no one was hit.
The suspects left the scene in a vehicle, which an Oakland motorcycle officer later found and tried to stop. Police said the suspects sped off, but officers did not give chase.
Instead, a police helicopter followed the vehicle into Hayward, where it collided with another vehicle near Hesperian Boulevard and Turner Court, according to police.
Three suspects β one adult and two minors β were taken to an area hospital with injuries ranging from minor to critical. The driver of the other vehicle was also taken to an area hospital, where they were listed in stable condition Wednesday night.
Police are searching for at least two additional suspects in connection with the attempted armed robbery.

LOS ALTOS HILLS β A crash and chemical spill snarled traffic on Interstate 280 in Los Altos Hills for much of Thursday afternoon and early evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The incident happened around 12:45 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the highway near Magdalena Avenue, the CHP said. No injuries were reported.
All southbound lanes were initially blocked. Around 3:20 p.m., the CHP announced the No. 4 lane was open.
The spill also impacted traffic in the northbound direction. Two lanes were open as of 3:40 p.m., according to the Santa Clara County Fire Department, which was handling the cleanup.
Around 7:20 p.m., the CHP announced the No. 3 and 4 lanes in the southbound direction were open. The other lanes were expected to reopen in another one to two hours.
Sodium hypochlorite, or bleach, and hydrochloric acid, or muriatic acid, spilled in the crash, the fire department said. When combined, the chemicals produce chlorine gas.
Several monitors were used to ensure the safety of passing motorists, according to the fire department.
