  • Agate collector and streamer raises $100,000 for Toys for Tots

Lakeville, Minnesota resident Chase Anderson spent years working as a realtor, he left the corporate grind behind to pursue his passion: rocks.

“2016, I was in a gravel pit with a buddy picking up agates. And I said you know there’s something to this and I want to pursue this more,” Anderson said.

In that pit, Anderson had an idea — to go after his longtime hobby of collecting agates and minerals. He started live streaming under the name ” The Agate Dude,” where he showed his finds to his audience.

That audience quickly became a community of collectors and hobbyists who followed his daily hunts.

“To go from the grind of the 9-5, everybody does it, to living a more independent lifestyle. Doing what I love,” Anderson said. “Its been a wild adjustment. I still pinch myself every day that I wake up.”

A few years into streaming he has accumulated 90,000 loyal followers on his Facebook where he streams.

“We’ve made a huge connection all across the country. We got a lot of people into the rock hunting thing and it has evolved into something way bigger than I would have ever thought,” Anderson said.

In 2020, Anderson received a call from his friend asking if he could donate a singular sphere piece to help raise money for Toys of Tots in Northern Iowa. The request sparked an idea that would grow into a major annual fundraiser.

“We don’t do anything small around here,” Anderson said.

The first year they raised $3,000 dollars, since then they have expanded the effort into a multi-state livestream fundraising event featuring donated agates, minerals, fossils, handmade crafts and art. Participants claim items during live broadcasts and donate directly to Toys for Tots.

In 2024, they were able to raise $51,000 dollars for Toys for Tots and hope to raise more this year.

“I hope it influences others to do something similar. Start small, it doesn’t have to be big, help out somewhere local. Give your time somewhere and give a donation somewhere and help people out in need,” Anderson said.

The kickoff to the Toys for Tots Fundraiser will begin at 4.pm. CT on The Agate Dude livestream.

  • Christmas comes early for Montgomery County Toys for Tots – WTOP News

Just two weeks away from being canceled, Montgomery County’s Toys for Tots was gifted a warehouse free of charge this holiday season.

Just two weeks away from being canceled, Montgomery County’s Toys for Tots was gifted a warehouse free of charge this holiday season.

Elizabeth Scott, the Montgomery County coordinator for the Marines Corps Reserves’ Toys for Tots, told WTOP in September that they were unable to find a warehouse and that she was fearful the toy drive wouldn’t happen in December.

Scott reached out to a realtor Charisse Callender-Scott, who donated toys in the past and co-founded the ComuniBuild Foundation, for a last ditch effort to save the day.

“I feel like it’s Santa’s workshop and she’s Santa,” Callender-Scott said. “We are the elves out here in the community, helping spread joy.”

Thanks to Callender-Scott’s efforts, along with Lucas Glaeser from KLNB, they were able to secure the 9,000-sqaure-fot warehouse from Prasad Properties LLC for free.

“It’s a blessing all around and it can definitely set a standard for some positive things in the community,” Callender-Scott said.

Last year, 43,000 children in Montgomery County received gifts from Toys for Tots, and Scott believes that, due to the government job cuts earlier in the year and the ongoing government shutdown, the amount will be doubled in December.

Scott, who is in her 70s, has been a volunteer with Toys for Tots ever since they helped her children 60 years ago. She said her four living children, seven grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, all help her with Toys for Tots, adding that it’s her way of paying back their kindness.

“Anyone out there can be in this spot of needing,” Scott said. “So let’s try to be more considerate and try to think about those that don’t have.”

Asked if it keeps her young at heart, Scott laughed and replied, “Even Santa Claus feels old sometimes.”

  • Toys for Tots Montgomery County needs another Christmas miracle – WTOP News

Toys for Tots Montgomery County needs another Christmas miracle in the form of a warehouse to make sure children in need get toys this winter.

Nearly a year after a WTOP listener came to the rescue to help make sure over 40,000 children in Montgomery County, Maryland, had a present under the tree on Dec. 25, Toys for Tots Montgomery County needs another Christmas miracle.

The warehouse that Elizabeth Scott, who is the coordinator for Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Montgomery County, told WTOP the warehouse that was donated last year is now rented. If another space is not found, Toys for Tots may be canceled in Montgomery County this year.

Last year, 43,000 children in Montgomery County received gifts thanks to Toys for Tots.

“I expect probably a lot more this year, since a lot of people have lost their jobs,” Scott said. “I’m expecting probably about 60,000 kids.

In the season of giving, Scott said she is thankful to not only the people who donate toys, but also the volunteers from Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, ROTC, local students and everyday moms and dads.

Scott understands the importance of volunteering better than most. Her connection to Toys for Tots dates back 60 years.

“My husband and I separated; they had sponsored me during this time. Back then they would give you one toy and one bag of groceries,” Scott said. “I promised myself that I would try to give back to those that helped me.”

Every year since, Scott and her family were a part of making sure other families did not go without on Christmas morning.

Now Scott needs help to make sure the giving continues.

“My wish for Christmas is that I can reach every disadvantaged child that is eligible to receive a toy, and most of all to have a warehouse to be able to distribute the toys to the children,” Scott said.

The warehouse of Scott’s dreams would be between 8,000 and 10,000 square feet with utilities and a bathroom in Gaithersburg.

Scott hopes to move into a warehouse by Oct. 1. It would be used to collect, separate, bag and store the toys until they are distributed.

Scott hopes to help Santa give out between 100,000 and 200,000 toys this year.

Toys for Tots needs Christmas miracle in Montgomery County – WTOP News

Even though Montgomery County, Maryland, is one of the wealthiest areas in the U.S., its biggest toy drive of the year may be canceled.

Even though Montgomery County, Maryland, is one of the wealthiest areas in the U.S., its biggest toy drive of the year may be canceled.

“I’ve been having a lot of problems with the real estate companies here, and owners of warehouses that will not donate to me to have Toys for Tots,” said Elizabeth Scott, the Montgomery County coordinator of Toys for Tots.

She told WTOP that, since June, she has had no luck finding an 8,000- to 10,000-square-foot warehouse to collect, separate, bag and distribute toys for this holiday season.

“We have a month to find one or it’s hopeless,” Scott said. “I’ve reached out to the Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and the mayor of Gaithersburg, and I’ve heard nothing back.”

Last year, over 22,000 children in Montgomery County received more than 44,000 toys thanks to Toys for Tots.

Scott said she has been a part of Toys for Tots since she and her children were recipients 58 years ago.

“This is the most rewarding thing God could give to me,” Scott said. “It’s my way of saying thank you and giving back.”

Power Your Fun has announced plans today to partner with Toys for Tots, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public charity dedicated to bringing joy and sending a message of hope to children in need for the Christmas season.

Power Your Fun (PYF) is on a mission to power more fun for more kids with a BOGO deal that amplifies customer purchases into gifts for children. “play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources – our children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign.”

This BOGO event gives holiday shoppers an opportunity to double their gift-giving power with an instant donation to less fortunate children through Marine Toys for Tots, commonly known as Toys for Tots, a charity that has been igniting joyful smiles for little ones since 1947.
