Annual antique toy train show rolls through South Jersey museum

DEPTFORD, New Jersey (WPVI) — Jeffrey Norcross has been collecting and curating a museum of American history for more than 30 years.

And each year, he rolls out antique toy trains from his childhood for all to see.

This year marks the 23rd Annual Antique Toy Train Show at The Museum of American History at Deptford, NJ.
At present, Norcross is displaying three of his timeless trains from the mid-20th century, which still impressively roar across the tracks all these years later.

The train show is a gateway to the rest of the two-story museum, which features agricultural artifacts, fossil specimens, glasses and bottles, pieces of Pine Barrens history, and more.

Norcross, an archaeologist, proudly excavated many of the items himself at 161 sites in 16 states.

This year’s train show will run through February 1, 2026. Then, an art show will launch at the museum from March 8th through the 22nd.

Shoppers in California plan to splurge this holiday season — out of fear

Shoppers in California plan to splurge this coming holiday season, but not because they are confident about the future. They are worried about inflation and figure it’s better to buy now than pay more later.

At least that’s the takeaway from a new report from accounting firm KPMG that shows that consumers on the West Coast are more concerned about price rise and tariffs than those in any other region in the country.

Nationally, shoppers intend to boost their holiday spending by 4.6% this year compared with last year, spending an average of $847 on shopping, according to the report.

“When you think about why consumers are planning on spending more, it’s not that they have more wallet to spare, but it’s actually an expectation that prices are increasing,” Duleep Rodrigo, KPMG U.S. consumer and retail leader, said in an interview. “Eighty percent also of consumers are really being very conscious about inflation, and inflation that is impacted as a result of tariffs.”

Of the six different regions KPMG surveys, the Pacific region — which includes California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii and Alaska — showed the highest concern for rising prices due to tariffs, with 72% citing inflation as a top concern.

Nationally, 8 in 10 consumers believe tariffs will result in price increases. The least concerned were consumers in the Northeast, where only 6% said price increases would result in cutting back on holiday spending.

“The consumer is spending like a poker player with a small chip stack,” Rodrigo said in the report. “They know they can’t play every hand but are willing to go ‘all in’ on a promising hand with a high emotional payoff. There’s also a psychological element where the consumer is managing a complex set of uncertainties.”

KPMG found that consumer spending on essentials such as groceries, automotive expenses and personal care have increased in 2025, though much less than last year. In discretionary categories such as toys, furniture and hobby supplies, people expect to spend less.

As budgets get tight, more people plan on spending on themselves this holiday season, with many purchasing big ticket holiday travel costing more than $1,000.

The top gifts people want to receive this holiday season? Cold hard cash — followed by gift cards and apparel — indicating that more people want flexibility to spend on things they like, according to KPMG.

Consumer price inflation for Los Angeles increased 3.3% in August, compared with the same time last year. National consumer inflation stood at 2.9% for the same period, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

From toys to apparel, retailers have experienced varying levels of impact due to President Trump’s sweeping tariffs on much of the world this year.

Many retailers have been absorbing the costs of tariffs imposed by the Trump administration but cannot hold off indefinitely.

Rodrigo said price increases on goods have already started happening, with retailers being more strategic.

“For now, consumers that are in the top 20% are probably driving 80% of the economic activity that is sustaining and maintaining the current state of the economy,” Rodrigo said. “But there is a larger population that is really hurting, and that is really concerned with their dollars right now.”

Parenting 101: 4 Money rules to raise millionaires

According to a recent Bankrate study, children who were raised with a strong financial education are significantly more likely to build healthy money habits and negotiate higher salaries as adults.

Teach kids to negotiate early

Helping children learn to negotiate teaches them confidence and critical thinking. This skill doesn’t just help with salaries, it also builds resilience and self-advocacy across various life situations. Start small by encouraging your kids to explain their reasoning during decisions or budget trade-offs. Let them make their case for a new toy by suggesting ways to save for it or what they’d be willing to give up. Role-play common scenarios, like asking for a later bedtime or a larger allowance, so they get comfortable presenting their viewpoint and backing it up with logic.

Introduce investing concepts early

Investing might seem like an “adult” topic, but kids as young as 10 can grasp basic ideas like risk, growth, and diversification. Start simple: offer 1 toy now or 3 if they wait a week. It’s an easy way to introduce patience and the idea of long-term rewards. With older kids, try playing a stock market game or tracking shares of a brand they like to make investing fun and relatable. Encourage them to follow the performance of their chosen stocks over time and discuss how the value goes up and down. This hands-on approach teaches patience, the importance of long-term growth, and the power of small, consistent investments.

Encourage budgeting with allowances

Giving kids a regular allowance tied to specific responsibilities helps them learn to manage money hands-on. According to the AICPA, the average allowance is $30 per week, and children earn around $6.11 per hour for completing chores. That’s a real income they can learn to manage. Encourage them to split their money into categories: save, spend, and give. This introduces budgeting in a way that’s personal and meaningful, building a habit that can last into adulthood.

Encourage entrepreneurial ventures

Letting your child run a mini business, like selling handmade crafts, mowing lawns, or even creating digital content, can teach practical lessons about money, time, and value creation. In a national survey by Junior Achievement USA, 60% of teens said they would prefer to start their own business rather than work a traditional job. This shows a strong interest in entrepreneurship among youth, and early practice gives them a head start. They learn budgeting, setting prices, marketing, and even coping with failure — all within a safe, supportive environment.

Supermom In Training: Teaching children gratitude during the holidays

The holidays are an overwhelming time for everyone, especially kids – the influx of toys, visitors, and sweet treats can lead to a fussy, ungrateful kid. So here are a few ways of teaching children gratitude during the holidays.

Donate toys. There are a lot of needy kids out there, and children who don’t receive tons and tons of toys around the holidays. Whereas your child likely has a few toys that he or she no longer uses and are worthy of some more love and use by another child. Talk to your kids about those who have less than them, and then work together choosing some toys you’d be willing to donate.

Collect for a cause. A lot of organizations are seeking out change or non-perishable food items. Add some items to your holiday or grocery lists, and go on a drive together as a family to drop it off at a local food bank, etc.

Write thank-you notes. I’m a big advocate of thank-yous, and I always try and get my son involved (even if it means colouring some pictures for them while I write out the card). After the holiday hooplah, sit down with your child and recount who got him or her what so they can really take a moment and consider the thoughtfulness of the present. Then make out a brief letter or notecard together.

These Custom Toys Are More Art Than Action Figure

Human instinct dictates that when we see a toy, we want to open it. It’s why old toys that are still in their box are so valuable. Everyone who bought them as a child opened and played with them, making ones still in the package much rarer. But what if there were toys that went against that instinct? Toys not meant to be played with. Toys meant to be displayed where the packaging is as much of the experience as the figure itself, if not more so?

That’s exactly the type of toys artist Adam Perocchi makes. A New England resident and native, under the name “Readful Things” Perocchi makes art in the shape of a toy, package and all. It’s a way for him to explore a love of pop culture, as well as sculpting and painting. “I’ve been painting/drawing since I was a kid [and] I got into sculpting about eight years ago,” Perocchi told io9. “I wanted a way to combine my sculpts with my artwork, so I thought carded action figures would be a good way to marry the two things.” Which he now does almost daily, working on five or six pieces simultaneously, sculpting a figure as well as doing the artwork for the package.

Perocchi covers all types of subjects, from classic pop culture to new favorites, or even sometimes things that are much more specific. “Occasionally I’ll do some current pop culture internet zeitgeist thingy (Pop Tart being cooked alive, Star Wars Cerveza Cristal, etc), and those will supersede everything else,” he said. Pomona church lost to fire that also burned hundreds of toys meant for giveaway

When Victory Outreach Church in Pomona went up in flames early Sunday morning, incinerating the church building along with more than 500 toys set to be given away later in the day , it didn’t take long for the spirit of Christmas to sweep through the community.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department sent 100 firefighters to fight the blaze and then to knock down walls, stamping out hot spots. But before the smoke had even cleared, fire officials hatched a plan to send two Search and Rescue trucks loaded with toys to the disaster site later in the day.

A Los Angeles County fighter pump responded to a fire at Victory Outreach Church in Pomona. The church was in the process of setting up to give food and gifts to families later in the day.

And after news of the disaster spread, all morning long, members of the community converged on the site with donated toys.

“We have to help save Christmas for this congregation,” said L.A. County Fire Captain Sheila Kelliher-Burkoh. “We know the building isn’t the church. The church is in the hearts of these people and we’re here to help.”

The blaze ignited a little after 2 a.m., burning so fiercely in the building’s attic that firefighters had to retreat. No one was injured, but when the flames were finally out, the building was gone, along with 500 toys the congregation had painstakingly collected for children in need. “That is the horrible timing of this one,” Kelliher-Burkoh said.

Officials at the L.A. County Fire department quickly decided they could help. The department, in conjunction with ABC7-TV, collects toys all season for the needy, storing them in a giant warehouse in Vernon before distributing them. As firefighters sent giant machines through the smoldering site to make it safe, officials back at headquarters made plans to dispatch two trucks’ worth of toys to the church by 5 p.m.

“We’re still going to do what we intended to do,” said Jose Montiel, a congregant who, along with his wife, Lourdes, helped organize the toy drive and signed up more than 600 needy families.

Meanwhile, all across Pomona and beyond, members of the community heard about the disaster and rushed to Victory Outreach to save the holiday for the church’s children.

Around 11 a.m., Steve Ybarra arrived at the scene of the disaster with a pickup truck stuffed with presents. Ybarra is a pastor of the nearby Abundant Living Family Church. His congregation held their toy drive a day earlier, he said, and had some leftover gifts. When he heard about the fire, he said, “it broke my heart.”

A few minutes later, another woman from the neighborhood, Carole Glass, walked up holding a toy to contribute — a stuffed dragon. “It’s more important to give to someone who really needs it,” she said.

Behind them stood the ruined church. At the spot where the door used to be, one element had survived: A small Christmas tree in a golden pot that somehow escaped the flames.

Victory Outreach Church in Pomona erupted in flames around 2 a.m. Sunday, resulting in a total loss of the structure built in 1981.

Around 10 percent of the plastic waste in the oceans comes from fishing. Every year, an estimated 640,000 tons of nets, ropes, and other equipment are left behind in the oceans. The new ECO kids’ scooters from Micro Mobility Systems are made from part of this waste, which is collected in landfills and then recycled.

Toynk Toys has officially announced the upcoming release for one of its most highly anticipated replica pieces: The Smithsonian T-Rex Skull Fossil Statue – Specimen USNM 555000.

Specimen USNM 555000, also known as “the Nation’s T. rex,” was discovered on federal land in 1988 by Montana rancher Kathy Wankel. A team of paleontologists from the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Montana, led by paleontologist Jack Horner, excavated the fossil from 1989 to 1990. It was then transferred to the Museum of the Rockies by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for preparation and eventual housing at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, where it resides today. It is one of the largest and most complete T. rex specimens ever discovered, with 80–85 percent of the skeleton recovered.

In partnership with the Smithsonian Institute, Master Replicas Group has created an extremely accurate polystone resin replica of the USNM 555000 skull fossil through the use of advanced 3D-scanning technology. This process enabled MRG to capture all of the detail of the original specimen and present it to collectors, dinosaur enthusiasts, and educators in the form of this amazing 1/10th scale replica.
