  • Eric Dane, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Euphoria’ star, has died at 53

    Eric Dane, the celebrated actor best known for his roles on “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Euphoria” and who later in life became an advocate for ALS awareness, died Thursday. He was 53.

    His representatives said Dane died from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known also as Lou Gehrig’s disease, less than a year after he announced his diagnosis.

He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received.”

    Dane developed a devoted fanbase when his big break arrived in the mid-2000s: He was cast as Dr. Mark Sloan, aka McSteamy, on the ABC medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” a role he would play from 2006 until 2012 and reprise in 2021.

    Although his character was killed off on the show after a plane crash, Dane’s character left an indelible mark on the still-running show: Seattle Grace Hospital became Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

    In 2019, he did a complete 180 from the charming McSteamy and became the troubled Cal Jacobs in HBO’s provocative drama “Euphoria,” a role he continued in up until his death.

    Dane also starred as Tom Chandler, the captain of a U.S. Navy destroyer at sea after a global catastrophe wiped out most of the world’s population, in the TNT drama “The Last Ship.” In 2017, production was halted as Dane battled depression.

    In April 2025, Dane announced he had been diagnosed with ALS, a progressive disease that attacks nerve cells controlling muscles throughout the body.

    ALS gradually destroys the nerve cells and connections needed to walk, talk, speak and breathe. Most patients die within three to five years of a diagnosis.

    Dane became an advocate for ALS awareness, speaking a news conference in Washington on health insurance prior authorization. “Some of you may know me from TV shows, such as ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ which I play a doctor. But I am here today to speak briefly as a patient battling ALS,” he said in June 2025. In September of that year, the ALS Network named Dane the recipient of their advocate of the year award, recognizing his commitment to raising awareness and support for people living with ALS.

    Dane was born on Nov. 9, 1972, and raised in Northern California. His father, who the actor said was a Navy veteran and an architect, died of a gunshot wound when Dane was 7. After high school, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting, landing guest roles on shows like “Saved by the Bell,” “Married…With Children,” “Charmed” and “X-Men: the Last Stand,” and one season of the short-lived medical drama “Gideon’s Crossing.”

    A memoir by Dane is scheduled to be published in late 2026. “Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments” will be released by Maria Shriver’s The Open Field, a Penguin Random House imprint. According to Open Field, Dane’s memoir covers key moments in his life, from his first day at work on “Grey’s Anatomy” to the births of his two daughters and learning that he had ALS.

    “I want to capture the moments that shaped me — the beautiful days, the hard ones, the ones I never took for granted — so that if nothing else, people who read it will remember what it means to live with heart,” Dane said in a statement about the book. “If sharing this helps someone find meaning in their own days, then my story is worth telling.”

    Dane is survived by his wife, actor Rebecca Gayheart, and their two teen daughters, Billie Beatrice and Georgia Geraldine. Gayheart and Dane wed in 2004 and separated in September 2017. Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018, but later filed to dismiss the petition. In a December essay for New York magazine’s The Cut reflecting on Dane’s diagnosis, Gayheart called their dynamic “a very complicated relationship, one that’s confusing for people.” She said they never got a divorce, but dated other people and lived separately.

    “Our love may not be romantic, but it’s a familial love,” she said. “Eric knows that I am always going to want the best for him. That I’m going to do my best to do right by him. And I know he would do the same for me. So whatever I can do or however I can show up to make this journey better for him or easier for him, I want to do that.”

  • Filing taxes? ‘No tax on tips’ provision could affect thousands locally

    PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — This year when filing taxes, those who receive tips could get more money back in their pocket.

    A study from Yale University says about 2.5% of workers are tipped, but in a vacation destination like Pinellas County, the proportion of workers who make the bulk of their income off tips is likely higher.

    Bay area tax professional Michael Price with Ralph, Price, McAuliffe & Associates, P.A, said he expects those tipped employees who work more than a shift or two a week could see some significant tax savings this year.

    “When you start talking about an extra $7,000 – $8,000 potentially of tax savings for people by not having tax on tips, I think it could add up quite significantly if you’re under the appropriate income thresholds,” he said.

    The ‘no tax on tips’ provision that is part of the One Big Beautiful Bill act is a tax deduction, not an exemption. It’s an above the line deduction of up to $25,000 for tips that were properly reported and given voluntarily.

    Price said all the information a tipped worker needs will be on their tax documents.

    “It’s going to be separately reported on their W-2,” he said. “So when they get their W-2 ,they’ll see the extra boxes where they’ll have a code for their qualified tips that they can put into whatever they use to do their tax preparation.”

    Jobs that qualify are those that customarily receive tips, like in the hospitality industry. Jobs like tutoring or fishing charters that received Venmo payments as a ‘thank you’ would not qualify.

    The deduction also doesn’t apply to automatic service charges, or mandatory gratuity.

    The ‘no tax on tips’ provision won’t benefit all tipped workers. Some part-time servers would earn too little to owe federal income tax on their earnings in the first place.

    Staff members at The Frog Pond in downtown St. Pete said they’re filing their taxes and hope they benefit. Owner Raymond Bourque says he hope his staff can get more money back this year given this new provision, and knows his customers prefer their tips going straight to their server.

    “If somebody leaves a $10 tip on a $20-$25 dollar ticket… they want to know that $10 will stay with them and not $7 in their pocket and $3 to the federal government,” Borque said.

    These tax provisions will remain through the 2028 tax season.

  • Council hears recommendations from advanced air mobility task force

    ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — They’re being called a potentially transformative change to transportation in Tampa Bay.

    While it’s uncertain when advanced air mobility aircraft (AAM) will start carrying passengers in the region, St. Petersburg is one of the municipalities getting ready for them. 

    “You want to be ready for the latest technology. You want to be prepared. You don’t want to be reactive when something kind of comes on the horizon,” said Ed Montanari, chair of St. Petersburg’s Advanced Air Mobility Task Force.

    During an interview at Albert Whitted Airport, Montanari pointed out a model of the first commercial airliner. A sign on the display says it took off from downtown more than 110 years ago.

    “A lot of people don’t know this, but the airline business started right here in St. Petersburg in 1914, and this is the newest airborne transportation system that’s coming along,” said Montanari.

    A report from the task force describes AAM as “an emerging sector of the aviation industry that enables the quick and efficient transport of passengers or cargo over short distances.”

    While the report says this encompasses different kinds of aircraft, the most common kind being developed is the electric vertical take off and landing aircraft, or eVTOL.

    Montanari said they haven’t been approved by the FAA yet, but that could happen later this year or early next. Thursday, he told city council what can be done to prepare.

    “I think it’s going to be transformative to transportation throughout the region, and the state, and around the world,” he told Spectrum News.

    Improvements to Albert Whitted Airport were among the recommendations. They included creating AAM parking spots and installing electrical charging stations and fire safety systems in the next three years. It says one or more vertiports — or takeoff and landing sites — should be built in the next decade.

    “I see the first place these aircraft are going to operate out of would be right here at the airport,” said Montanari. 

    He also said there’s a potential for standalone vertiports in different areas of the city, like downtown. He compared those sites to helipads on the tops of tall buildings in New York City. Montanari said AAMs would first operate out of the airport.

    Council Member Brandi Gabbard said a critical part of getting the introduction of AAMs right will be cooperation beyond St. Pete.

    “I think we can look at our transit today and note that if there had been regional collaboration decades ago, we would be in a much different place,” Gabbard said during the meeting.

    The task force’s report does recommend working with regional planners to develop flight corridors to link Whitted with Tampa International Airport and other facilities. 

    “We also want to capture the jobs that might come with these new vehicles, the education, the training, and then the manufacturing,” said Montanari. “We’re going for it all right here. We really wanted to plant the flag of — this is the home of commercial aviation, we want to keep it the home of commercial aviation.” 

    Montanari said next, a study is needed to determine where at Whitted the infrastructure and landing spots should be.

  • Lawmakers, residents push to protect Terra Ceia, oppose Manatee cruise port

    TERRA CEIA, Fla. — A Florida Senate bill that would protect the ecosystem near Rattlesnake Key has passed unanimously.

    SB 302 includes an amendment from State Sen. Jim Boyd, R-Bradenton, that prohibits dredging in the Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve.

    However, the companion bill in the House does not include that specific provision, meaning a proposed cruise port south of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, where larger ships could dock, could still move forward if the House bill is not revised.

    Corey McKeever, owner of McKeever’s Marine, recently took on a passion project to protect that area from a cruise terminal.

    “I knew it would destroy everything about Manatee County,” he said.

    He has lived in Manatee County for decades and has owned the business for 15 years.

    “I do everything on boats. When I was younger, I went fishing every day. I would skip school to go fishing at the Skyway,” he said. “We do 10 boats a week.”

    McKeever believes his petition against the cruise port — which more than 19,000 people signed — has helped the effort to stop the project.

    “It did help. I would think with the amount of outreach people had, reaching out to the commissioners, the senators directly, anyone that could do anything for this,” he said.

    SSA Marine, which submitted the proposal for the cruise port, declined an interview but provided a statement.

    “SSA Marine is committed to environmental stewardship and creating long-term economic opportunities that we are confident will be transformative for Manatee County. We look forward to continuing to engage with residents, officials, and community leaders in meaningful dialogue to discuss a shared vision for the region,” the company said.

    Manatee County Commissioner Tal Siddique says he supports the amendment that would prohibit dredging in Terra Ceia.

    “I spoke to our delegation and with some members of the State Affairs Committee, which is where it will be going through. I have been told there will be some companion language coming through to match the Senate version,” he said.

    He also says he does not believe the cruise port project would come before county commissioners anytime soon.

    “This is such a massive project, and there are single-family home projects that take a long time to come to us. I would suspect next year, maybe even bleeding into 2028, if this moves forward,” he said.

    For McKeever, if the proposal does not move forward, he says it will be a job well done.

    “I think it’s going to be great for Florida in general, keeping the environment — what we moved here for — to enjoy Florida,” he said.

    McKeever says he believes in protecting the environment and hopes others will continue working with him to preserve Manatee County’s ecosystem.

  • New $59M state appeal courthouse opens in St. Petersburg

    “This is a way for us to recognize all of the partners who have helped us along the way to make this happen,” said Chief Judge Matt Lucas. “A way for us to formally announce to everyone, ‘Hey, we’re here, we’re open for business, we’re part of this community and we’re excited to get to work.’”

    Lucas said staff began moving into the courthouse in December, with the first oral arguments held last month. Construction at the site, located at 525 Mirror Lake Drive North, began in 2023. The appeal courthouse opened on budget and on time, according to Lucas.

    The 59,000 square-foot building features a single courtroom, suites for 15 judges and workspace for 96 staff members. Lucas said the community room, which the court provides as a meeting space for local bar associations, has become very popular.

    “I will tell you, my phone has been ringing off the hook,” he said. “I had no idea there was so much pent up demand in St Petersburg, but we’re thrilled it’s getting used.” 

    The courtroom is the crown jewel of the three-story building featuring the latest technology and sound absorbing acoustic panels on the walls. Attorney Kevin Hayslett said it’s the envy of most judges in the state.

    “It is pristine. It’s the talk of every appellate judge in the state,” he said. “We’ve got the best courtroom in the state right here in St. Pete.”

    A panel of three appellate court judges serve the Sixth Judicial Circuit (Pinellas and Pasco counties), the 13th Circuit (Hillsborough County) and the 12th Circuit (Sarasota, Manatee and DeSoto counties). Lucas said the state chose to build the courthouse in St. Petersburg because of its centralized location.

    “Being right in the center downtown, it’s fitting. It makes sense,” he said. “It’s a place where everyone, when they walk by, whether they have business here or not, they know, yeah, the second DCA is doing the work that they’re supposed to be doing for the people in our district.”

    Before moving into the new courthouse, the judges and staff were working out of the Stetson Law Center in Tampa and a leased building in Lakeland. In 2016, the second DCA had to abandon its courthouse in Lakeland due to structural and air-quality issues.

    Lucas said while everything in the courtroom is brand new, they did bring a few pieces of the past to honor traditions.

    “These oak tables are the original council tables from the Lakeland courthouse,” he said. “We have the original gavel up on the bench there.”

    The courthouse is named after Bernie McCabe, who was the State Attorney for Pinellas and Pasco Counties for nearly 30 years. He died on Jan. 1, 2021, at the age of 73. Hayslett worked as a prosecutor under McCabe. He said naming the courthouse after McCabe honors his legacy of public service.

    “When you think about Bernie McCabe, you think of a person that he believed in law and order,” Lucas said. “He believed in the right of law and people to appeal their sentences even when it didn’t go their way. That’s Bernie McCabe.” 

    Lucas said a modern courthouse must have two important functions to fulfill, security and technology.

    “Keeping up with technology and leaving room for new technology,” he said. “This building has numerous security features and layered security features.”  

    Having an office overlooking Mirror Lake makes it really easy to work at the courthouse, Lucas said, and he’s not looking to leave anytime soon.

    “We are here to stay,” he said. “I have every intention of being here for as long as the people of Florida will have me.”

  • Bradenton River Regatta back with more high-speed racing

    BRADENTON, Fla. — The biggest event of the year for the cities of Bradenton and Palmetto kicks off Friday evening with a high-energy start before a weekend packed with world-class racing, family-friendly events and an expected crowd topping 100,000. 

    The 11th annual Bradenton Area River Regatta begins with “Friday Night Flash” from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., featuring live music, food vendors, entertainment and a drone show that will light up the sky over the Manatee River.

    But this year’s regatta is being described as a turning point for the event — thanks to major additions on the water.

    For the first time, Formula 1 powerboats will headline the races, replacing Formula 2 boats. The difference is speed.

    Formula 1 boats can top 150 miles per hour and accelerate from 0 to 100 miles per hour in under five seconds. At peak speed, the boats skim so lightly across the surface that they are barely touching the water.

    Another new category will feature tri-hull boats, capable of reaching speeds up to 100 miles per hour.

    Bradenton Mayor Gene Brown says with new racing categories, the more than decade-old regatta feels like year one all over again.

    “This is kind of year one. Because when you think about it, going into the 11th year, with bringing in the new boats and really having 40 boats, that is going to change the dynamics of what is happening,” said Brown. “But without the sponsorships, without all the city staff, with everybody over the 11 years, we wouldn’t be anywhere where we are.”

    The regatta will also host the first-ever Florida Formula 1 Championships.

    While high-speed racing is the main attraction, the weekend will see several community events on and off the water, including the LECOM 5k Run and the DeSoto Little Anglers Fishing Tournament. 

    Brown says the event has grown significantly over the past decade and helped define the area.

    The races begin at 10 a.m. Saturday. The best viewing location is the Green Bridge, which spans the Manatee River between Bradenton and Palmetto.

    However, the bridge will be closed all day Saturday during the races.

    Organizers say there will be plenty of parking available on both sides of the river.

    With a drone show Friday night, faster boats on the water and tens of thousands expected to attend, this year’s regatta is shaping up to be one of the biggest yet.

  • NASA conducts second Artemis II wet dress rehearsal

    KENNEDY SPACE CENTER —  NASA took another crack at fueling its giant moon rocket Thursday after leaks halted the initial dress rehearsal and delayed the first lunar trip by astronauts in more than half a century.

    For the second time this month, launch teams pumped more than 700,000 gallons (2.6 million liters) of supercold fuel into the rocket atop its launch pad. They counted all the way down to the half-minute mark as planned, then turned back the clocks to run through the final 10 minutes again.

    NASA completed the test late at night and said there was minimal hydrogen leakage, well within safety limits.

    It was the most critical and challenging part of the two-day practice countdown. Engineers were analyzing the data, with the outcome determining whether a March launch is possible for the Artemis II moon mission with four astronauts.

    The nearly 50-hour test started on Tuesday as launch controllers arrived at their consoles at the Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Control Center.  

    But it is Thursday that many space fans are anxious about as more than 700,000 gallons of cryogenic fuel will be pumped into the Space Launch System rocket during the second test of it and its little companion, the Orion capsule, which will take four astronauts on a flyby mission to the moon.

    “Following successful chilldown of the liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen lines, teams have started slowly filling the SLS rocket’s core stage with super-cold liquid hydrogen, chilled to minus 423 degrees Fahrenheit, then with liquid oxygen chilled to minus 297 degrees. This marks the official start of propellant loading for the Artemis II wet dress rehearsal,” NASA stated on Thursday morning in a live blog at around 10:30 a.m. ET.

    To fill the core stage can take several hours, but what has space fans anxious is whether any leaks will be detected. As of 1 p.m. ET, no new leaks have been discovered.

    In addition to fueling the rocket, the wet dress rehearsal also allows technicians and engineers to go over countdown procedures, system checks, and determine whether any leaks occur during the first test.

    During the first wet dress rehearsal on Monday, Feb. 2, teams uncovered a liquid hydrogen leak in an interface that is used to route the fuel into the SLS’s core stage.

    In fact, that was the same portion where a liquid hydrogen leak was found during the Artemis I mission back in 2022.

    NASA technicians replaced two seals in that area of the Artemis II rocket, which pushed the crewed launch from early February to early March.

    Between the first and second wet dress rehearsals, NASA conducted a different test last weekend, where another issue was detected.

    “Over the weekend, teams replaced a filter in ground support equipment that was suspected of reducing the flow of liquid hydrogen during a Feb. 12 partial fueling test. The test provided enough data to allow engineers to plan toward a second wet dress rehearsal this week. Engineers have reconnected the line with the new filter and are reestablishing proper environmental conditions,” NASA stated.

    During Thursday’s second test, NASA announced that there was a ground issue, which delayed the filling of the liquid hydrogen.

    But that issue was resolved.

    If all goes well with this test, NASA stated it is eyeing March 6 as the earliest opportunity to launch the historical moon mission.

    The expedition will see NASA’s Cmdr. Gregory Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, mission specialist Christina Koch and Canadian Space Agency astronaut mission specialist Jeremy Hansen go to the moon in a flyby mission.

  • Southern California homebuying remains below Great Recession’s crash

    How sluggish has Southern California homebuying been over the past three years?

    Well, house hunters across the six counties bought 500,159 homes from 2023 through 2025, according to Attom.

    And in the previous TWO years? 502,140 sold. Yes, roughly equal.

    Call it what you want – chill, collapse, correction or crash – but house hunters are balking at high housing costs to an almost unfathomable degree. Ponder what Attom’s sales data, which goes back to 2005, tells my trusty spreadsheet.

    In Southern California last year, there were 168,719 completed sales of houses and condos, both existing and newly constructed. That’s the second slowest year in this 21-year record, not much higher than the historic low of 162,513 set in 2023.

    Contemplate that 2025 was the third-straight year in which Southern California homebuying was slower than the 198,863 sales in 2007, when that era’s housing bubble was crashing into the Great Recession.

    Or look at the mess this way: While last year’s sales were roughly flat compared with 2024, they were 29% below the average pace dating to 2005.

    The “why” is simple. Local homes are ridiculously unaffordable – especially when rents seem much cheaper with many landlords offering discounts.

    And you can add to that rising economic uncertainty and a weak job market with stingy raises. Then there’s California consumer confidence, which is at a five-year low.

    Very few things scream to a house hunter, “buy now!”

    Prices must fall

    The lack of buyers should have sunk home prices.

    Instead, many potential sellers who don’t want to offer discounts are choosing to stay put. So sales, not prices, collapsed.

    Look at the median sales price across the six counties. For December, it was $800,000 – unchanged from a year earlier and only 4% below the record $831,000 set in June 2025.

    It’s a similar story across the counties, comparing December pricing to the all-time highs set over the past two years – ranked by the drop.

    —Ventura’s $838,250 median was just 6% below its June 2025 peak.

    —Los Angeles, at $875,000, is 5% below June 2025’s high.

    —Orange at $1.15 million is 5% off June 2025’s pinnacle.

    —San Diego’s $865,500 is down 5% from June 2024’s record.

    —San Bernardino at $528,125 is 4% below October 2024’s peak.

    —Riverside at $592,000 is 3% off April 2025’s top.

    Curiously, what’s essentially flat local pricing came as homebuyers had far more choices in 2025. That may have created what some gurus call a “buyer’s market” for Southern California.

    Consider that existing home listings across six counties jumped 34% from 2024, according to Realtor.com.

    Industry insiders note, however, that this supply measure remains 14% below the pre-pandemic 2019 level. That dip may be providing some support for current pricing.

    The gap in homes for sale between 2025 and 2019 isn’t uniform across counties.

    It ranges from a supply down 1% in six years in Los Angeles to off 8% in Riverside, to 15% below in San Bernardino, to 20% below in San Diego and Ventura, to 40% below in Orange.

    And don’t underestimate how investors prop up prices. This group — from individuals with a few properties to institutions with thousands — owns roughly one in six local houses.

    Noteworthy dip

    Even falling mortgage rates failed to create much of a buying mood in 2025.

    The average 30-year home loan averaged 6.2% in the three months ending in December, according to Freddie Mac. That’s the lowest rate since October 2022.

    One culprit in this homebuying drama is the Federal Reserve’s zigzagging policies – cutting rates to record lows in 2020-21, and then reversing course with hikes in 2022-24, and back to cuts in late 2025.

    Last year’s Fed actions helped create a noteworthy dip in the number that really matters to house hunters – the monthly payment.

    A typical Southern California buyer in December would have a monthly payment of $3,931 – assuming current rates and a 20% down payment. That’s down 4% in a year and 9% below the $4,330 peak of June 2025.

    By the way, that monthly cost doesn’t include property taxes, home insurance, association fees or maintenance expenses.

    Think about a simple affordability yardstick. This house payment metric is up 96% over six years, while Southern California wages, by one measure, rose only 32% in the same period.

    Plus, don’t forget another monetary hurdle: a down payment of $160,000 as part of December’s estimated median price. Who’s got that kind of cash – or a rich, loving relative?

    Among the six counties, San Diego buyers have experienced the largest decline in estimated house payments compared with recent peaks. Its $4,253 payment is 13% below the record high.

    Ventura’s $4,119 payment is 12% off its high. Orange County’s $5,651 payment is down 11%. Riverside’s $2,909 payment is off 10%. Los Angeles’s $4,299 payment is down 10%. And San Bernardino’s $2,595 payment is off 8%.

    Or consider the California Association of Realtors’ affordability index. It says an average 17% of state households could qualify to buy a house last year, up a smidge from 2024’s 16% – but far below the 29% average since 2005.

    Not just here

    The reluctance to buy a home is not some local quirk.

    California’s 323,585 sales in 2025 were the state’s second-lowest since 2005. That was down 0.2% from the prior year and 27% below average.

    Again, it’s about lofty pricing. The statewide $710,000 median price for December was down 2% from 2024 and was only 5% below the $751,000 peak in June 2025.

    Nationwide homebuying fared slightly better, with 4.12 million sales, up 0.2% year over year and only 6% below average.

    Curiously, Americans will still pay up. December’s $372,000 U.S. median was a record high, following a 5% increase in 2025.

  • Rural Ohio fire departments to receive $593,000

    OHIO — Fire departments in rural areas will receive a total of $593,000 for 95 projects, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry announced Thursday.

    The funding is through the Volunteer Fire Assistance grant program, ODNR said. 

    “In addition to wildland fire training, this funding helps departments serving Ohio’s wildfire protection area enhance their equipment and operational readiness,” said Dan Balser, chief of the ODNR Division of Forestry. “Investing in local departments strengthens emergency response at the community level.”

    The VFA grants are for fire departments that have at least 80% volunteer firefighters and serve areas with a population of less than 10,000 people within the ODNR Forestry wildfire protection area.

    Fire departments may use the funds to purchase all-terrain vehicles, wildfire water tanks and pump units, wildfire and structure fire safety equipment, radios, tools and more, according to ODNR. The grants can fund up to 50% of the total project cost, but they are to not exceed $10,000 per grant.

    “Many rural fire departments in Ohio have tight budgets, and most of their limited resources must be focused on keeping essential emergency services running,” ODNR wrote in a release. “ODNR Forestry’s VFA grant program helps supplement fire department budgets and facilitates important purchases, such as firefighter personal protective equipment and basic fire suppression equipment.”

  • City of Cleveland, DOJ file joint motion to terminate consent decree

    CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cleveland’s Consent Decree may finally come to an end 10 years after it was implemented in order to reform the Cleveland Division of Police (CDP) and ensure constitutional policing.

    The City of Cleveland and United States Department of Justice (DOJ) have jointly filed a motion to terminate the decree after what the city said in a press release has been 10 “years of sustained progress and commitment to constitutional policing in the Division of Police.”

    “Cleveland’s Consent Decree began during a painful time in our city’s history. Our community’s courage and persistence shaped this reform process, and its engagement made progress possible,” Mayor Justin Bibb said in the release. “Today, reforms in Cleveland are self-sustaining, compliance has become culture, accountability is locally embedded, and local oversight remains.”

    In a separate press release from the DOJ, it said the police department has resolved the issues it found back in 2014.

    The DOJ said an investigation, which began in 2013, found “structural and systemic deficiencies and practices” such as ineffective policies, inadequate training and more. It said these deficiencies “contributed to the use of unreasonable force by CDP officers, in violation of the Constitution and Federal law.”

    The city and the DOJ entered the decree in 2015 “with the goal of creating and implementing policies and practices to repair community trust and protect the constitutional rights of the people of Cleveland.”

    In their Thursday release, the DOJ said the police department has implemented relevant policies and training and highlighted assessments showing the department now polices constitutionally.

    “We are proud to stand by the men and women of CDP as we take this significant step to end federal oversight and return control of local law enforcement to the City of Cleveland,” said Harmeet K. Dhillon, assistant attorney general with the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, in the release. “We believe the City and CDP have demonstrated their commitment to constitutional policing, and it is time for Cleveland to fully utilize CDP’s resources to protect Clevelanders from crime.”

    U.S. Attorney David M. Toepfer for the Northern District of Ohio said assessments by the monitoring team have shown “tremendous strides” made by police in the intervening years, and he said that’s improved the community’s trust.

    “The Division’s officers should be proud of what they have accomplished,” he said in the release. “As a valuable law enforcement partner, the U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work closely with CDP to reduce gun violence and drug trafficking, and to keep dangerous gang activity off the streets. We appreciate the dedication of these men and women in uniform and the hard work they do each day in their mission keep the people of Cleveland safe.”

    During those monitoring team assessments, the city said it had received 144 upgrades. A post on their website notes that 75 had to do with use of force, 24 with crisis intervention, eight with search and seizure, nine with recruitment and hiring, three with staffing, six with equipment and resources and 19 with training.

    “The progress achieved over more than a decade was not accidental —it was the result of sustained work, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to constitutional policing and strengthening community trust,” Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd said in the release. “I extend my appreciation to the U.S. Department of Justice, Mayor Bibb, the Monitoring Team and the Police Accountability Team for their guidance and oversight throughout this process. I also share this achievement with the members of our Division of Police, whose resilience, professionalism, and dedication to serving our city made this progress possible.”

    The city said officials will provide updates as this process moves forward to the court and U.S. District Court Judge Solomon Oliver, Jr.

    “In seeking to transfer oversight functions from federal to local control, this joint motion reflects years of sustained, measurable progress, and an unwavering commitment to constitutional policing and increasing public trust in the City of Cleveland,” said Dr. Leigh Anderson, Executive Director of the Mayor’s Police Accountability Team. “Through comprehensive policy reform, strengthened accountability systems, enhanced training, improved data collection, and meaningful engagement, durable structures have been reformed to live successfully beyond federal oversight.   • Report: Florida Cabinet to discuss gift of 22 acres to Hillsborough College

    TAMPA, Fla. — Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet are considering giving Hillsborough College 22 acres of land.

    The move would give the college the land needed for a proposed Tampa Bay Rays baseball stadium.

    According to Spectrum Bay News 9 partner newspaper, the Tampa Bay Times, the possible land gift is listed as an agenda item for a meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 24.

    DeSantis, along with Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred, has come out in support of the project.

    The team is envisioning a mixed-used entertainment district that would include a domed stadium that can seat about 31,000 people. According to a team release, the entire development would stretch about 130 acres across the campus.

    The college campus is located on North Dale Mabry Highway, across from Raymond James Stadium.

     

    Rays officials have said they want to be in the new ballpark for the 2029 season. The team’s lease with St. Petersburg at the newly renovated Tropicana Field expires after the 2028 season.

    According to a potential deal, the college would own the land and could negotiate its use with the Rays. Construction of the stadium could cost an estimated $2.3 billion.

    The team’s new owners, led by developer Patrick Zalupski, have said they would fund 50 percent of the stadium costs.

    City, county and state officials have yet to officially discuss any other funding sources, though property taxes on the nearby area, a half-cent county sales tax and a tourist tax have all been mentioned.

  • Rainbow laser lights to illuminate 50 blocks of St. Pete’s Central Avenue

    ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — For three nights, 50 blocks of Central Avenue in St. Pete will be illuminated with a rainbow of laser lights.

    The lights will project off the roof of the Mari Jean Hotel and end at a vacant building in South Pasadena. The lasers will cover a more than 2-mile stretch of Central Avenue.

    Depending on viewpoint, the lights could appear in a rainbow arch or shooting straight into the sky. At other angles, they may appear flatter and more parallel to the ground.

    “The rainbow is like sacred geometry… it just works together,” said artist Yvette Mattern. “That’s why it’s such a powerful symbol.” 

    Mattern created the Global Rainbow art installation over two decades ago. Equipped with large cases that house custom rainbow lasers, Mattern has traveled the world lighting up landmarks in Berlin, London, Belfast, São Paulo and many American cities.

    Winter Pride reached out to Mattern following the FDOT ruling to get rid of street murals across Florida.

    Local street murals that were painted over last summer following the state decision included the “Back the Blue” mural near the Tampa Police Department, the “Black History Matters” mural by the Woodson Museum in St. Pete, and the large rainbow crosswalk in St. Pete’s Grand Central District.


    When the rainbow crosswalk was painted over, Winter Pride St. Pete organizer Rob Hall said he wanted to do something big. Hall says after coming out as an adult, the rainbow crosswalk pushed him to move to St. Pete.

    “When I saw that, I felt accepted right away,” Hall said, speaking of the former crosswalk. “Now we need to find things and ways to show our community, no matter who you are… visiting, local, where you’re from, that this is a safe space.”

    Hall connected with Mattern and arranged for her Global Rainbow to spend three nights in St. Pete during the annual Winter Pride week. The show is funded by donations to Winter Pride St. Pete. 

    Mattern said the laser art installation can be seen up to 60 miles away, depending on visibility.

    Global Rainbow begins at dusk on Thursday, Feb. 19. It will run from nightfall until 3 a.m. through Saturday night.

    Due to the enhanced fire danger, burn bans are in effect for the Tampa Bay area. A burn ban prohibits burning outdoors as well as fireworks, sparklers and fire pits. Outdoor grilling is allowed as long as flames are contained within a grill and the fire is constantly attended. 

    Here are some safety tips to prevent fires:

    • Remove fuels that can lead flames to your home or that can be ignited by windblown embers.
    • Clear away dead grass, leaves, twigs, and branches from structures, roofs, rain gutters, decks, and walkways.
    • Store firewood at least 30 feet from occupied structures.
    • Plant landscaping that retains moisture and resists ignition, such as native, fire-resistant vegetation.
    • Help emergency responders find your home faster by making sure that street numbers are easy to read.
    • Know where the closest firefighting water source is to your home or building.
    • Dispose of cigarette butts properly.
    • Pick up light-refracting metal items, such as soda cans, that can spark a fire.     
    • Don’t park vehicles over high grass that could come into contact with hot engines and other components.

  • Pinellas County schools add ‘pay to play’ fee for athletics

    LARGO, Fla. — Students in Pinellas County Schools will have to pay a fee to play school sports. The school board made the decision at Tuesday’s board workshop, and school officials say it’s to help expand offerings to student athletes.

    • The schools athletic director says other school districts have implemented similar fees to keep up with rising athletic costs.
    • Parents say they hope some of the money from the fee is used to support current sports as well, and not just going towards new programs.


    It is $50 per sport, with a max of $200 per family. Parents who talked to Spectrum Bay News 9 say they support school sports, but the price to play keeps rising and they worry some families won’t be able to afford it.

    “I mean, if my daughter wants to play sports, I’m going to find a way, but I think for some families it might be a little bit harder,” said Katrina Piparo.

    Piparo’s daughter, Alyvia, cheers and plays flag football for Hollins High School. She says she loves participating in both sports, but admits, even without the new $50 fee, per sport, it can be pricey.

    “For example, flag football, you have to buy your cleats, you have to buy your gloves. There’s a lot of purchases that need to be made for sports once the kids get started,” she said.

    While she feels it’s money well spent, she worries the added fee to play may be more than some families can afford. But Marc Allison, who is the athletic director for Pinellas County Schools, says there will be help for families who need it. 

    “We know that our athletes, students that get involved and are engaged in school in any way, shape or form, have a greater academic success story.  They have better connections, less behavior challenges, and those kinds of things, and by continuing to offer more and more opportunities, we are able to reach out to kids that might not have had these opportunities other ways,” he said.

    Allison says the district will use the money from the fees to add sport programs to both middle and high schools. He says other school districts have implemented similar fees to keep up with rising athletic costs.

    “As we continue to expand and offer opportunities we know that there’s rising costs already with the cost of officials, the cost of transportation, uniform costs, all those things rise, and we don’t want to sacrifice the excellence that’s already occurring in our schools,” said Allison.

    Donna Munera’s son is 15 and is on the track and swim team at his high school. She says she understands the budget restraints school districts are facing, and, personally knowing what a difference sports can have on your life, she is willing to contribute.  

    “It’s so much more than just playing a game, and I know it needs funding, and I personally am willing to help with that funding, I hope the community is,” she said.

    Parents say they hope some of the money from the fee is used to support current sports as well, and not just going towards new programs. Munera mentioned that her son’s track team can’t afford to pay for a school bus to take them to meets, and it often falls on parents and coaches to make up for things the teams are lacking.

    Pasco and Polk County schools both have participation fees, similar to what Pinellas is implementing. Hillsborough County Schools only has a participation fee for lacrosse, and Citrus County Schools is considering adding a fee — they say they will decided over the summer.

  • NASA labels Starliner danger level as Type A, same as Challenger

    KENNEDY SPACE CENTER —  NASA officials labeled the Boeing Starliner saga — which suffered from helium leaks and thruster issues and its crew had to use SpaceX’s Dragon capsule to return to Earth — as the same level of danger as the fatal Challenger mission.

    During Thursday afternoon’s press conference, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman labeled what happened to Boeing’s Starliner capsule as a Type A mishap, where the crew could have been in real danger if things had not gone as they did.

    NASA released a 311-page report on what happened with the Starliner mission.

    In 2024, Cmdr. Barry “Butch” Wilmore and pilot Sunita “Suni” Williams were members of the Boeing Crew Flight Test as they experimented with Boeing’s experimental Starliner capsule and go to the International Space Station in what was supposed to be a days-long mission.

    However, from trying to launch with liquid helium leaks and thruster issues on the Starliner, the eightish-day mission on the space station turned into a nine-month stay.  

    NASA eventually deemed Calypso, the name of the Starliner capsule, unsafe and returned to Earth without Wilmore and Williams.

    The U.S. space agency already had a plan to bring them home, as Spectrum News was the first to confirm that NASA was considering the use of a SpaceX Dragon capsule for their ride home.  Which was the case.

    They have since retired from NASA.

    Isaacman explains what a Type A mishap is

    During the Thursday afternoon teleconference, Isaacman started off by reading a letter that he sent to NASA employees, which listed the history of Starliner and the issues it faced.

    “While we have identified organizational root causes, the technical investigations to identify proximate (direct) causes for the service module and crew module thruster anomalies remain ongoing. Acknowledging that present-day reality is essential to mission success,” he read off.

    When Starliner was coming in to dock with the International Space Station, five of its thrusters failed and once the system returned, only four came back online. This also resulted in the loss of 6 Degree of Freedom (6DOF) controllers.

    Isaacman stated in the letter that the cause for the failure has not been identified and officials with both Boeing and NASA are still working to determine the cause.

    He also stated in the letter that this resulted in the mission being labeled a serious Type A mishap and originally, it was not declared as such. A Type A mishap is the worst type of accident category that NASA has, which can result in mission failure, resulting in a $2 million or more financial loss, the aircraft or spacecraft being damaged or destroyed and injury or death.  

    This is the same category as the fatal 1986 Challenger space shuttle mission or the 2003 space shuttle Columbia incident.

    During a question-and-answer session, Spectrum News asked Isaacman just how much danger Wilmore and Williams were in.

    “How much danger were they were in? Losing 6doff controllers is a huge deal. I actually want to give a lot of credit, and I mentioned it in my remarks earlier, to the flight controllers that made the decision to kind of challenge some of our flight rules and bring that crew to a safe haven, which is the International Space Station. Had that not taken place, had thrusters not been recovered, it could have very well been a different, different outcome,” he answered.

    He continued to say that once the Starliner returned to Earth, there was another thruster failure, adding, “So, the spaceship was not healthy.”

    He stressed that Starliner will not fly again until everything has been resolved, which means it may not have an uncrewed test launch to the space station in April of this year.

    ‘And we failed them’

    Another thing that was revealed is that while there were mechanical and technical issues, it was the “culture” between NASA and Boeing staff, that created mistrust, Isaacman shared, adding that officials were unprofessional during the situation and worried more about Starliner’s capability than solving the immediate issues.

    NASA Associate Administrator Amit Shastri, who was also with Isaacman during the teleconference, said that the U.S. space agency failed Wilmore and Williams.

    “They have so much grace and they’re so competent, the two of them. And we failed them. The agency failed them. And even though they won’t, they won’t say that, we have to say that, we have to recognize that our responsibility is to them and to all the crews that are coming and to the crews that (are) about to go fly and … our responsibilities to each other, too. We’re a family,” he said.

    ST. PETE BEACH, Fla. — The historically designated Pass-a-Grille shuffleboard clubhouse was demolished on Thursday after being substantially damaged by hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024.

    “We had hoped more than anything it could be saved,” said Bonnie Gustafson, club member. “The city did the research and just decided it was the best choice.”

    The 90-year-old building was originally a beach shelter in Gulfport, before being moved by barge to St. Pete Beach in the late 1920s. A demo crew contracted by the city for $9,000 used a backhoe to tear down the historical building, which had pink exterior walls, two bathrooms, air conditioning, storage space and a cedar plank ceiling.

    “It’s just sad because we just thought it would always be here,” said Carla Kegel, club member. “It’s just been a big part of our life.”

    Pass-a-Grille Shuffleboard Club President John Gustafson managed to take out a few items from the clubhouse before the demolition began.

    “We salvaged this nice window. The plan is to put a number of photos, memorabilia and stuff from the shuffleboard club in here,” he said. “When they build a new structure, we’ll be able to have some memorabilia in the new building.”

    Last May, city leaders said the historical clubhouse was part of the character of Pass-a-Grille and considered restoring it before learning it would cost $192,000 and exceed the budget. The city then explored moving a 100-year-old Pass-a-Grille home to the site to serve as the new clubhouse.

    Those plans were scrapped in December because it too was going to cost too much money at an estimated $475,000, even though the house was going to be given away for free.

    City Commissioner Jon Maldonado, who represents Pass-a-Grille, said that demolition was the only fiscally responsible thing to do with the damaged historic structure.

    “It’s bittersweet. We know that we needed to do it. It wasn’t something that we wanted to do,” he said. “But at the end of the day, it was what was necessary. So it’s an emotional day for the community.” 

    Public Services Director Camden Mills said feedback from community meetings showed club members wanted the new clubhouse to be a shade structure with storage for shuffleboard equipment and restrooms. It’ll be similar to a pavilion type structure.

    “The commission is excited to hear what that’s going to look like,” said Maldonado. “We have not voted on it.”

    Mills said the budget for the new shuffleboard clubhouse is $166,000 and the city will be advertising a request for bid. The public services director expects to present it to city commissioners for approval in about 6 months.

    “I’m just happy that the city realizes the significance and the importance of having a shelter,” said Bonnie Gustafson. “It breaks our heart that it’s not keeping the original.”

  • Proposed Manatee cruise port could be stopped with bill

    MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — State lawmakers have advanced a bill that could put a stop to proposed plans to build a new cruise port in Manatee County.

    Sen. Jim Boyd filed an amendment to a coastal resiliency bill that would restrict dredging in the Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve. 

    That is next to the private property where cruise company SSA Marina has said it wants to build a new cruise port.

    That’s according to our newsgathering partners at the Tampa Bay Times.

    The amendment clarifies that dredging would only be allowed to improve the quality of the preserve, remove stagnant waters or maintain marinas, boat ramps and piers.

    The cruise company announced last month that it wants to build a terminal capable of docking larger cruise ships that can’t fit under the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

    Hundreds of people rallied against the proposal.

    The pushback against the port has also led to some Manatee County government employees to receive threats.

    A similar bill is headed to the House for a vote.

    OHIO — Museum-lovers in Ohio have no shortage of options when it comes to galleries full of historic, interesting or unique items and interactive exhibits.

    USA Today recently put out their list of best museums in the country, separated into various categories. The museums were nominated by a panel and then voted on by readers, according to the website.

    Ohio institutions made the cut on several of these lists.

    Best pop culture museums

    • The American Sign Museum came in at No. 2 on this ranking. The museum is located at 1330 Monmouth Ave. in Cincinnati

    Best children’s museums

    Best history museums

    Best science museums

    Best planetariums

    • The COSI Planetarium snagged the eighth spot on this list.

    The company plans to send up its Falcon 9 rocket with Starlink 10-36 mission from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, stated SpaceX.

    The launch window opens from 5 p.m. ET to 9 p.m. ET, which means SpaceX has during this time to send up its Falcon 9.

    The 45th Weather Squadron has given a 95% chance of a good launch forecast, with no concerns about the liftoff, which is a rarity.

    It is not uncommon for the squadron, for example, to report that there is a cumulus cloud rule that goes against the launch.

    After the stage separation, the first-stage rocket should land on the droneship Just Read the Instructions that will be in the Atlantic Ocean, which will be off the coast of the Bahamas.

    Understanding the mission

    SpaceX, which owns the Starlink satellite company, will send another 29 satellites to low-Earth orbit.

    Once deployed and in position, they will provide internet service to many places around the Earth.

    A two-time presidential candidate who fought for social justice in the decades following the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, Jackson died Tuesday at the age of 84.

    Jackson was a young community organizer in Chicago when he was called to meet with King at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, shortly before King was killed. From that point on, he positioned himself as King’s successor, advocating for the poor and underrepresented on issues from voting rights and job opportunities to education and health care.

    On Wednesday, his children pledged to continue advocating for the same causes and encouraged younger generations to follow in their father’s footsteps.

    “Now this mantle of standing up for freedom, standing up for dignity, standing up for those that have been marginalized is now passed on — not to be inherited by a person, but to be taken over and taken up by another generation,” the reverend’s second oldest son, Rep. Jonathan Jackson, D-Ill., said Wednesday. “It’s a continuous fight as we see the rollbacks of our rights that he’s fought so hard for are now being challenged.”

    As the Trump administration works to root out diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in government and the country, the congressman said, “DEI has been a major part of my father’s work. These are the guardrails to fight against racism and to bring about inclusion to make this a better country.”

    One week after President Donald Trump was sworn in for his second term in January 2025, Rep. Jackson said he formed the DEI Caucus with Rep. Cleo Fields, D-La.

    “We can’t say we’ve made enough progress on race and equity and racial justice,” he said, adding that U.S. DOGE Service cuts to federal agencies last year disproportionately affected African American women. “This is not one man or one woman’s work.”

    Jackson Jr. credited his father with opening the door to the 62 African Americans who currently serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and the five who serve in the Senate.

    Jackson Jr. called on his congressman brother to “find creative ways to do something” about unpaid home health care providers in the United States, saying he and his five siblings had each provided caregiving for their father, who lived with the rare brain disorder known as progressive supranuclear palsy for a decade before his death.

    Jackson Jr. said his father’s funeral is “not for those of you who have an opinion” but for “people who are coming to pay their respects.”

    “We expect a grand meeting of people who are beneficiaries of the life and the work of Jesse Jackson,” he said. “We expect it from the far right, and they are welcome if they come respectfully, and we expect it from the far left to honor Mrs. Jesse Jackson. This is her request.”
