    Iger, for his part, strengthened the Disney brand through his acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, oversaw the expansion of the company in China and India, and had a laser-like focus on technology that both made the Disney product better and more accessible. Iger, at the same time, is approachable, media savvy, and has deftly managed a company that is like no other.

  • Ruskin teacher helps juggle school’s Head Start program and food pantry

    RUSKIN, Fla. — Magali Garcia-Rosado has been a teacher for 25 years. She says she loves helping young students learn and grow.

    “My kids are everything to me,” Garcia-Rosado said. “They come into the classroom and they’re always talking about how happy they are, they’re talking about giving warm hugs. They are curious learners.”

    Garcia-Rosado said she loves the interaction with the little ones and watching them grow every day.

    “I love to see the process of learning,” she said.

    Garcia-Rosado is the Head Start teacher at Ruskin Elementary. She’s been there for seven years. A parent reached out to nominate Garcia-Rosado to be featured as an A+ Teacher, saying she is always there for her students and their families. 

    “It makes me feel very humbled that my families see me as someone who supports not just the children but also them,” she said. “Because I am a firm believer that I am working with the parent. The parent is the first teacher and I come along to support them.”

    Garcia-Rosado also helps run the school’s food pantry. Families can get food there every Wednesday. That’s one of her many contributions to the school.

    “She focuses on the whole child so not just academics, but social, emotional growth as well,” said Ruskin Elementary Principal Jeanine Saddler. “I have never seen anything like it in a Head Start or Pre-K classroom.”

    Garcia-Rosado is certainly making a difference.

    “When we see the children learning, it just humbles me and it gives me such great joy to see that everything that we have worked towards, we begin to see it,” said Garcia-Rosado.

  • Snow to fall in southern Ohio Tuesday

    CINCINNATI — An area of low pressure will pass through the Ohio Valley on Tuesday and bring a round of accumulating snow to parts of the state. Many counties along the Ohio River and generally south of Interstate 70 are under a Winter Weather Advisory.


    What You Need To Know

    • Accumulating snow is likely mainly south of Interstate 70 Tuesday
    • Snow will be most impactful mid-morning through the afternoon
    • Totals of 1-3″ with isolated higher amounts are possible

    Snow will quickly overspread southern Ohio from west to east during the morning hours and will continue through the afternoon, tapering off in most locations before sunset on Tuesday evening.

    Road conditions are expected to deteriorate after the snow starts to fall. This may affect travel on city streets, country roads and area highways for several hours, including the afternoon commute.

    Accumulations will range between 1 and 3 inches in the advisory area. Isolated higher amounts of 4 or 5 inches will be possible in a few spots. Further north, snow totals will taper off to less than 1 inch.

    As temperatures approach the freezing mark by afternoon, road conditions may improve some. Regardless, use caution and give yourself extra time to reach your destination, and leave plenty of space for snowplows and road crews to get their work done.

  • “Something has to be done” – public weighs in on Ybor City road safety

    TAMPA, Fla. — Nearly three months after four people were killed and more than a dozen injured in a fatal Ybor City crash, the community had the chance to let city officials know what safety improvements they’d like to see in the historic district. 

    “Something has to be done, and sooner than later, too,” said Candra Granville Mack.

    Granville Mack was among the dozens who came out to Centro Asturiano de Tampa Monday night for a public meeting with city council members, police representatives, and more. She said her reason for being there was personal.

    Her cousin, Sherman Jones, was 53 years old when his life was cut short in the early morning hours of November 8.

    “‘Superman’ is what they called him,” she said. “That’s what he was – our super hero to the whole family.”

    Jones was one of more than a dozen people hit by a speeding driver who Tampa Police said was involved in a pursuit with Florida Highway Patrol on Nov. 8. 

    “He was just out people watching,” she said. “It’s so funny because one of his nephew’s friends was out there that same day at a motorcycle event and happened to catch the last photo of my cousin just standing there, just people watching, before he was killed.”

    Granville Mack said she and other family members returned to Ybor on Monday for Jones and for others.

    “It’s difficult, and we’d like to hear some good information tonight to move forward so other families don’t have to be where we are now,” she said.

    Interim Transportation Services Director Adam Purcell told the crowd that crashes like November’s are rare in the district.

    “In the last ten years, there has not been a fatal crash on 7th Ave. except for what occurred in November,” said Purcell.

    He said that for the historic district as a whole, the past five years have seen a relatively small number of crashes with serious injuries and two involving fatalities.

    According to Purcell, transportation services staff started meeting with Tampa Police soon after November’s fatal crash to explore safety improvements.

    He said speed reduction is a main focus, with the speed limit on 7th Ave. being lowered from 30 mph to 25 mph, part of the street being re-bricked, and on-street parking being added to narrow lanes and encourage slower speeds. The city is also looking at adding four-way stops and bollards at higher volume intersections.

    Speakers at the meeting raised concerns about sidewalks and a street design they said favors cars instead of pedestrians. The panel also heard from people for and against a suggestion that’s come up again and again through the years – shutting down 7th Ave.

    “Just take the street and make it like New Orleans,” said Granville Mack. “Just cut it off certain days so people can have fun and be safe.”

    “The owners are concerned about closing down 7th Avenue, bringing in congestion and bringing in more people who do not spend their money on 7th Avenue,” said Joe Citro, a former member of Tampa City Council. “You have the homeowners concerned that it’s going to take more traffic off of 7th and put it on their neighborhood streets.”

    Citro said he supports adding four-way stops and setting up bollards in parking spaces Thursday through Saturday.

    Granville Mack said she hopes some change comes from the lives lost.

    Some at the meeting asked for more discussions on the topic or a workshop-style meeting. City Councilmember Naya Young led the meeting and said she’s open to more conversations on making Ybor streets safer.

  • Jazz sending ex-Florida, UCF stars to Grizzlies in blockbuster deal for All-Star

    All-Star forward Jaren Jackson Jr. has been traded to the Utah Jazz in what will be an eight-player, multiple-pick deal with the Grizzlies that results in former Florida Gator and 2025 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player Walter Clayton Jr. and former UCF forward Taylor Hendricks also heading to Memphis.

    Utah is also sending Georges Niang and Kyle Anderson and three future first-round picks to the Grizzlies.

    Jackson, Jock Landale, John Konchar and Vince Williams Jr. will be going to Utah with Jackson Jr.

    In the offseason, Memphis previously had traded guard Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic for multiple draft picks and a pick swap. He apparently was the first shoe to drop.

    Memphis has been engaged in talks about trading star guard Ja Morant as well. For now, the Grizzlies decided to part with Jackson, a former defensive player of the year.

    Jackson averaged 19.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game this season for Memphis, the team that drafted him No. 4 overall in 2018. He was a two-time All-Star for the Grizzlies, the 2023 defensive player of the year, a two-time blocked shot champion and a three-time all-defensive team pick.

    Of the four Utah players moving to Memphis in the deal, none averaged more than 7.1 points per game this season. Niang has yet to play because of injury; he was with the Atlanta Hawks last season, got traded to the Boston Celtics in July and then sent to Utah in August.

    Clayton Jr. was selected No. 18 overall by the Jazz in the 2025 NBA Draft. Hendricks, picked No. 9 overall in the 2023 draft, was in his third season with the Jazz, but he missed all but three games last season after fracturing his right fibula and dislocating his ankle.

  • NASA to review Artemis II test data as it eyes March launch

    KENNEDY SPACE CENTER — During a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, NASA officials said that due to a liquid hydrogen leak and other issues, they will be postponing the crewed Artemis II launch to the moon to no earlier than March.

    NASA Associate Administrator Amit Kshatriya called the prelaunch test — called the wet dress rehearsal — a “critical milestone.”

    “The wet dress rehearsal we had last night was a critical milestone on the way to Artemis II. That was the reason we went to the pad was to do this test. It allowed our teams to test all the systems required in the in the all up configuration. I think it’s clear based on what we saw in real time, we’re now targeting no earlier than March for Artemis II launch,” he said on Tuesday afternoon.

    NASA officials said they will go over all the data and determine how the leaks and issues happened, how to fix them and then determine when the next wet dress rehearsal will be.

    During the 49-hour wet dress rehearsal of the Artemis II’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and the Orion capsule that started at 8:13 p.m. ET, Jan. 31, NASA encountered a number of issues.

    As NASA was pumping more than 700,000 gallons of cryogenic fuel into the rocket on Monday, engineers discovered a liquid hydrogen leak in an interface that is used to route the fuel into the SLS’s core stage.

    This caused the engineers to spend hours troubleshooting the problem, with one solution being to stop the flow of liquid hydrogen and allow the interface to warm up so the seals could reset, then re-adjust the flow of the propellant, NASA explained.

    “Teams have stopped the flow of liquid hydrogen through the tail service mast umbilical interface into the core stage after leak concentrations exceeded allowable limits,” the U.S. space agency stated.

    That section — interface of the tail service mast umbilical — was the same section where a leak was found during the Artemis I mission.

    During the press conference, Artemis II Mission Management Team Chairman John Honeycutt said the team of engineers took a pretty aggressive approach to do testing on the valves and seals and how much they can tolerate, calling the interface where the leak was found “complex.”

    “And when you’re dealing with high hydrogen, it’s a small molecule. It’s highly energetic. And we like it for that reason. And we do the best we can. And actually, this one (the leak) caught us off guard. And the initial things that we were seeing and the technical team felt like we either had some sort of misalignment or, or some sort of deformation or, or debris on the seal,” he said.

    Charlie Blackwell-Thompson, Artemis II launch director, said that some of the lessons learned during Artemis I were used for this upcoming mission, with some positive results.

    “We did make some changes, … but we did make some changes to several of the hydrogen components. I talked about the replenish valve. We had a leak there. We did a design mod. It worked great. We also made some changes. If you remember, from Artemis I, we also had changes in what I would call the back of the plate in the purge can and in the debris plate, we changed the flex hose design that comes into the back of that plate,” she explained.

    She said that due to the modifications, the teams did not see any liquid hydrogen leaks where improvements have been made.

    With the leaks postponing launches, Spectrum News asked if NASA would consider replacing the SLS rocket and Orion capsule with Blue Origin’s Blue Moon lunar lander for the Artemis III mission, slated for 2027.

    “So we are, of course, heavily partnered with Blue Origin and SpaceX and other, you know, super heavy lift launch vehicle providers that are integral to our architecture. So, we’re going to continue to partner with them and share learnings and implement and get them into our to our mission plans. So that’s certainly true. Changing commodity on SLS or changing the design that in that severe way is will probably disable the production significantly. And, you know, make a change. You expect the change. As discussed earlier, it’s hard enough for us to get into a flight-like configuration in a lot of these tests. And so now putting a big design square wave into it, I’m not sure would have the value that we’d expect. What we really want to do is let industry innovate on their own machines. And then when they’re ready to support our missions, we’ll cut them into the architecture and use them as we need to,” Kshatriya answered.

    In October 2025, then NASA acting Administrator Sean Duffy said NASA is considering Blue Origin and other companies to handle the task of returning humans to the moon’s surface because SpaceX’s Starship was behind schedule.

    Engineers were able to fill all the tanks, both in the core stage and the interim cryogenic propulsion stage.

    The wet dress rehearsal allowed NASA to load more than 700,000 gallons of cryogenic propellants into the rocket, conduct a simulated launch countdown, and practice removing propellant from the uncrewed rocket.

    However, NASA reported another issue during the simulated countdown.

    “Engineers conducted a first run at terminal countdown operations during the test, counting down to approximately 5 minutes left in the countdown, before the ground launch sequencer automatically stopped the countdown due to a spike in the liquid hydrogen leak rate,” the agency stated.

    The leak was not the only cause of concern. On the Orion capsule — which will take NASA’s Cmdr. Gregory Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, mission specialists Christina Koch and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen to a flyby mission to the moon — a valve associated with the spacecraft’s hatch pressurization needed retorquing, which took longer than planned.

    The valve had been replaced before the wet dress rehearsal started.

    NASA also stated that the bitterly cold weather that has swept through Florida recently had a hand in plaguing the test. Several cameras and other equipment were impacted by the cold, as well as audio communications dropping out for the ground teams.

    All of these issues have forced NASA to look at March for the historic launch.

    “With March as the potential launch window, teams will fully review data from the test, mitigate each issue, and return to testing ahead of setting an official target launch date,” NASA stated.

    The crew has been released from quarantine, where they have been since Jan. 21 in Houston.

    Delays are not uncommon for the Artemis mission, with the first one seeing several of them — liquid hydrogen leaks being one of the main causes.

    In fact, Artemis II was supposed to launch in 2025.

  • Owe back rent due to wildfires, ICE raids? Find out how to apply to LA County for help

    After only allowing landlords to apply for cash assistance, a second round of Los Angeles County’s emergency rent relief program for survivors of the 2025 wildfires and for households impacted by federal immigration crackdowns begins on Tuesday, Feb. 9.

    This time, tenants themselves can initiate the application, which can prompt awards for back rent and for payments owed utilities, such as electric power and water.

    But there is a catch: Although the tenant can apply, their application must be accompanied by a second document from the landlord. If the tenant meets income eligibility requirements, and indeed owes back rent or utility bills, as long as the landlord agrees, the application can go through, according to rules from the county’s Department of Consumer and Business Affairs (DCBA).

    Each applicant can receive up to $15,000. All awards go to the landlords or property owners, who clear the back rents or pay the utilities of the tenant applicant. The window for tenant applications opens Feb. 9 at 9 a.m. and closes Wednesday, March 11 at 4:59 p.m.

    The County’s Emergency Rent Relief Program has reaffirmed what we already know to be true – Los Angeles County residents are navigating undue hardship and financial challenges due to emergencies like federal immigration enforcement and the 2025 wildfires,” said Los Angeles County Board Chair and First District Supervisor, Hilda L. Solis in a prepared statement.

    For those affected by the Palisades and Eaton fires, the rent relief includes those laid off if their place of employment was destroyed or their work hours were reduced, resulting in lost wages. Even more than a year later, those displaced by the fires still need help paying rent or mortgages and would be eligible for up to six months of rent relief, not to exceed $15,000.

    The Palisades and Eaton fires destroyed 11,000 homes and 2,000 businesses. Some groups report only about 30% are rebuilding. A majority are still paying temporary rental charges and allotments from their insurance is expiring.

    “For families still recovering from the Eaton Fire, housing stability is essential to getting back on their feet,” said Fifth District Supervisor Kathryn Barger in a prepared statement.

    In the first round, which closed Jan. 23, a total of 4,644 applications were received, the county reported. It is not known how many awards were given out since most of these are still being vetted, said Keven Chavez, spokesperson for the DCBA. Small landlords in unincorporated areas whose units sustained damage are eligible for six months of rent relief not to exceed $15,000, as long as the units were returned to the rental market. Landlords may still apply in the next round.

    For those tenants, including both in unincorporated county communities and in cities, who have sustained economic hardships such as a sudden loss of income due to federal immigration raids, are eligible for up to six months of rent relief not to exceed $15,000.

    “The urgent need for housing stability and to keep people housed is the reason behind LA County’s Emergency Rent Relief program,” said Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell in a prepared statement.

    The reopening of the $30 million program so that tenants can apply directly comes at a time when families are losing income due to the arrest of main breadwinners placed in detention by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents, said Third District Supervisor Lindsey Horvath.

    “My intent was always for tenants to be included because access to relief should not depend on who initiates the application. Allowing tenants to apply directly helps remove barriers and ensures assistance reaches families who need it most,” said Horvath.

    “With the opening of Round 2, by expanding that access to allow tenants to initiate the process, that reduces the barriers, allows more people to get the process started, get them access and to the finish line,” Chavez said.

    Marisa Prietto, a communications specialist and volunteer with The Rent Brigade, a grassroots group keeping track of rising rents in LA County, has found rents had increased in many areas by 300%, as landlords took advantage of the increased demand.

    “The last year we’ve seen extreme price gouging,” she said.

    Prietto said even now, the rent relief program is necessary to help those displaced by the January 2025 fires in Altadena and the Palisades. But she said the county program is not perfect.

    For example, many landlords who did not apply in the first round could more easily evict tenants, then rent out the unit at a much higher rent to a new tenant. Even with tenants’ applications, the landlords could simply look at the economics and not accept the deal and instead find a tenant willing to pay more per month, she said.

    “The main problem with it is the eviction protections aren’t strong enough to incentivize landlords to use the program (which is voluntary),” she said.

    The DCBA is hoping more tenants apply in this round than landlords did in the first round. But the application process is not yet open. The application will be open at the website: lacountyrentrelief.com

    “This program is an important first step that will bring much needed relief to some of the most vulnerable in our community,” said Chris Baca, director of humanitarian & migrant assistance at Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA). “Our hope is for this program can bring relief to as many people who need it, and that it becomes a model of how to respond to the housing crises caused by disasters and other unforeseen emergencies.”

    In the meantime, Chavez encourages all tenants who think they may be eligible to go to the website anyway and put in their preliminary information and get on the program’s notification list. They can become familiar with the questions they will be asked, such as income, living situation and how they’ve become affected by either emergency.

    OHIO — As tax season approaches, Ohioans have an opportunity to help protect their state’s endangered animals, healthy streams and unique ecosystems.

    Funds also help benefit the bald eagle, which was restored through partnerships with zoos, universities and other conservation organizations to bring the eagle back from just four nesting pairs in 1979 to 964 active nests in 2025.

    Meanwhile, donations to the Nature Preserves and Scenic Rivers Fund have helped support conservation work to protect habitats ranging from forests, prairies, wetlands and streamside habitats. 

    Through donations, the Division of Natural Areas and Preserves added seven new state nature preserves in 2025. The new areas protect a range of rare habitats such as sand dunes, wetlands, sandstone cliffs, and cascading waterfalls. 

    The division also uses donations to enhance public facilities, such as a new pedestrian bridge at Eagle Creek State Nature Preserve in northeast Ohio which helped open an area of the preserve that was closed for nearly 10 years and a new staircase in southern Ohio top open access to Shoemaker State Nature Preserve.

    A new trail project recently broke ground at Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve in west-central Ohio to make a portion of the Rim Trail fully accessible, which is supported by funds. 

    Those looking to make an impact can donate all or part of their state income tax refund by putting a dollar amount for Nature Preserves/Scenic Rivers on line 25a or Wildlife species on 25d of the 2025 IT-1049 tax form. Contributions on the 2025 tax form filed in 2026 are deductible donations made in 2026.

    OHIO — Ohio officials are teaming up to remind motorists of their “personal responsibility” to practice safe driving habits along the state’s major roadways.

    The Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission are teaming up to encourage safe behaviors when behind the wheel.

    “Our troopers, our partners at the turnpike and first responders regularly encounter the aftermath of a poor choice that is made while behind the wheel,” said Staff Lt. Rick Reeder, Ohio State Highway Patrol. “These poor choices leave lasting impacts on families and communities, and many of them could have been avoided.”

    For the fourth year, Ohio has seen a decrease in fatal crashes across the state, including 37 fewer lives lost in 2025 when compared to 2024. The Ohio Turnpike had its lowest number of lives lost in the last 5 years at 10.

    From 2021 through 2025 on the Ohio Turnpike, there were:

    • 4,061 speed-related crashes, resulting in 21 fatalities and 1,637 injuries
    • 304 crashes where a distraction played a role, causing one death and injuring 143 others
    • 32 fatalities where a safety belt was available but not used

    “As you can see, in too many instances, these senseless tragedies resulted from something that was preventable,” Staff Lt. Reeder said.

    OSHP will conduct high-visibility patrols on the turnpike throughout 2026, focusing on violations that put drivers at risk, such as distracted driving, speeding, and not wearing a seatbelt.

    “Innovations like forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control and blind spot warnings are impressive and helpful, yet they’re not a substitute for safe driving behaviors and letting your guard down,” said Ohio Turnpike Chief Engineer Chris Matta, who also serves as deputy executive director for the turnpike commission. “Improving safety isn’t a switch we flip overnight. It’s ongoing work — through education, enforcement, outreach and most importantly, personal responsibility,” added Matta.

    Over the past five years, more than 6,000 people have died on Ohio’s roadways, and data shows the top crash factors remain the same for both passenger vehicles and commercial trucks. 

    These factors include:

    • Unsafe speed
    • Improper lane changes
    • Following too closely
    • Failure to yield

    Last year, more than 56 million cars and trucks traveled 3 billion miles on the Ohio Turnpike, with commercial vehicles accounting for about 25% of traffic on the turnpike. 

    Buses and trucks have larger blind spots, less maneuverability, and need more distance to stop. 

    The American Trucking Associations’ Share the Road campaign gave tips for drivers on ensuring safety:

    • Never cut in front of a truck
    • Don’t linger alongside a truck
    • Pass safely and promptly
    • Stay clear of blind spots;
    • Remember: if you can’t see the driver’s face in the side mirror, they can’t see you
    • Give trucks room to maneuver

    “This has already been a challenging winter,” said Matta. “Snowplow trucks are not obstacles. They’re making our roadway safer. Please give them plenty of room to work.”

  • Cynthia Henderson starts Citrus County group for female veterans

    CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. — A Citrus County woman started a group for other female veterans like herself. She also spearheaded an effort to get a monument for female vets built and placed in front of the historic county courthouse in Inverness.

    Cynthia Henderson served in the U.S. Air Force in the 1960s and is very proud of her service. She believed that there needed to be a local organization that was just for local female veterans. So, she started the Female Veterans Network of Citrus County.

    “Well, the camaraderie number one. We all get together for lunch once a month,” said Henderson.

    Group members talk about issues they face as veterans, while supporting each other through the struggles and helping the community.

    “We do various things for the community. We had a female veteran, and we replaced her roof,” said Henderson.

    They also offer a scholarship program for female high school senior JROTC members.

    The members of the group all take pride in their military service. “It’s a sisterhood. Even the sisterhood that we felt in the branch that we were in,” said Sigmond. “This is a bigger sisterhood because this is all the branches.”

    The network also spent several years planning the design and raising funds for the female veterans’ monument. They recently held a five-year rededication ceremony for the monument.

    Henderson said she makes sure to keep up with group members to make sure they are OK. “Well, it’s deep-rooted in the service we served in, even though we were in different branches. We were still serving in the same country,” said Henderson. “Every time I see the girls I find out something new about one or two of them.”

    “She has that compassion and always has that smile. And she loves us. We know she does,” said Sigmond.

    Lisa Gibson was at her 10th Groundhog Day, wearing a lighted hat that resembled the tree stump from which Phil emerges shortly after daybreak.

    “Oh man, it just breaks up the doldrums of winter,” said Gibson, accompanied by her husband — dressed up as Elvis Presley — and teenage daughter. “It’s like Halloween and New Year’s Eve all wrapped up into one holiday.”

    Gibson, a resident of Pittsburgh, had been rooting for Phil to not see his shadow.

    Rick Siger, Pennsylvania’s secretary of community and economic development, said the outdoor thermometer in his vehicle read 4 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 15 degrees Celsius) on his way to Gobbler’s Knob.

    “I think it’s just fun — folks having a good time,” said Siger, attending his fourth straight Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney. “It brings people together at a challenging time. It is a unifying force that showcases the best of Pennsylvania, the best of Punxsutawney, this area.”

    Last year’s announcement was six more weeks of winter, by far Phil’s more common assessment and not much of a surprise during the first week of February.   • NASA says it detected leak on Artemis II moon rocket during testing

    KENNEDY SPACE CENTER — On Monday afternoon, NASA stated that its teams detected a leak on its Artemis II moon rocket during the wet dress rehearsal.

    In an update, NASA stated that its teams have been able to fill the Space Launch System rocket’s core stage.

    “Teams have stopped the flow of liquid hydrogen through the tail service mast umbilical interface into the core stage after leak concentrations exceeded allowable limits,” the U.S. space agency stated.

    NASA stated that by stopping the flow of fuel, it lets engineers conduct troubleshooting processes that were first developed during Artemis I in 2022.

    During three separate occurrences, NASA detected liquid hydrogen leaks on the Space Launch System rocket during the Artemis I mission.

    “Liquid oxygen continues to flow into the core stage, and liquid hydrogen continues to flow into the upper stage,” NASA stated about the Artemis II wet dress rehearsal.

    In a new update, NASA stated that fixing the leak has “proved unsuccessful”.

    “After teams temporarily resumed fast fill of liquid hydrogen operations into the core stage, initial steps to correct the leak proved unsuccessful. The leak rate at the interface of the tail service mast umbilical continues to exceed the allowable limits. Liquid hydrogen filling operations on both the core stage and upper stage are paused as the team meets to determines next steps,” NASA explained.

    It was stated during the live feed that at 3:48 p.m. ET that the core stage liquid hydrogen fast fill has resumed.

    In a 4:41 p.m. ET update, NASA stated, “NASA teams have completed filling the core stage of the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket with liquid hydrogen and transitioned to topping mode. … Engineers continue to watch the leak at the interface of the tail service mast umbilical, but the liquid hydrogen concentration in the umbilical remains within acceptable limits.”

    During one of the launch attempts of Artemis I, that there was a leak at that same section. 

    In another update early in the evening, the U.S. space agency confirmed that the rocket has been filled with fuel, but the teams are keeping an eye on the leak.

    “Engineers continue to monitor liquid hydrogen concentration levels in the tail service mast umbilical, where a leak was previously detected. Levels are currently stable,” NASA stated.

    The wet dress rehearsal of the Orion capsule and the SLS rocket has teams loading more than 700,000 gallons of cryogenic fuel into the rocket, conducting a launch countdown and practicing safely removing the fuel from the rocket.

    Once the Artemis II stacked rocket is ready for launch, it will send NASA’s Cmdr. Gregory Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, mission specialist Christina Koch and Canadian Space Agency astronaut mission specialist Jeremy Hansen to the moon in a flyby mission.

    CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. — It’s the height of manatee season, and local leaders are adding accommodations to help visitors get to their destinations easier.

    The city of Crystal River recently bought a new shuttle. Once it’s up and running, leaders say it will help ease the flow of increased traffic between the Three Sisters Springs Visitor Center. The recent investment is coming at a crucial time for the “Manatee Capital of the World.”

    Gathered around Three Sisters Springs, visitors fill the water’s edge, snapping pictures, trying to glimpse of the manatees huddled together down below.

    “The colder the weather, the more manatees we have and the more visitors we have to see those manatees,” said Crystal River City Manager Audra Curts.

    It’s the height of manatee season, the city’s busiest time of year. It’s something Curts understands better than most.

    “We have in excess of 100,000 visitors per season, probably reaching the 200,000 range at this point, coming to the area to see these manatees,” said Curts. “That’s a lot of people for a very small town to absorb.”

    Due to those growing numbers, the city recently approved the purchase of a new shuttle, helping reduce wait times from an hour to 30 minutes. Parking lots throughout the city are also being made accessible to the route.

    “They even have a QR code so that people can buy their tickets to the refuge to see the manatees right from the parking lot,” says Curts. “Then they board the bus and they can come down here and go straight to the park at the gate.”

    “With the crowds getting larger and larger, the City of Crystal River has done a great job of recognizing those needs,” said Director of Tourism Auvis Cole. He said the move is much needed.

    “It’s connecting all of our resources and our attractions,” he said. “But number two, and I think it’s really the most important thing, is it offers accessibility. Everyone cannot walk the short distances or whatever and it’s really important to make sure we welcome all visitors.”

    Connecting visitors with all there is to see in Crystal River.

    “This is one of the most beautiful places on Earth and our manatees, obviously, many people love to come here and see them,” said Curts. “We welcome everyone to come see the manatees here in Crystal River.”

    Getting them one step closer to nature.

    Curts says they hope to have that new shuttle soon. In the meantime, the city’s current stock of buses is running more frequent routes to help transport visitors.

  • St. Pete mayor to review 5 Gas Plant development proposals

    ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Mayor Kenneth Welch on Tuesday will see all the proposals for developing the 86-acre historic Gas Plant District.


    Ark Ellison Horus and Kettler was the first group to file a proposal, and since then, more have come in. They are from DPZ CoDesign, the Pinellas County Housing Authority, Freedom Communities Company and the International Democratic Uhuru Movement.

    Welch said his team will evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of all the proposals and select a winner.

    “We’ll have a public forum where the developers will present to our community,” Welch told Spectrum News. “We’ll have the community benefits process as well, and then I will select one of those developers.”

    When asked if the process could take a few months, he said, “Oh, definitely.”

    Council member Brandi Gabbard is trying to pump the brakes on the process. She has a proposed resolution which the Council will vote on at its Thursday meeting. It requests that the administration pause any action to select a developer until some comprehensive planning has been completed.

    Another council member, Deborah Figgs-Sanders, says the city has been planning forever, and it’s time for action.

    “At this point, let’s get some things done,” she said. “Let’s choose the best organization to actually do it, but more importantly, let’s keep moving.”

    Steve Diasio, the CEO and founder of the School of Creativity and Innovation, held a Gas Plant District design workshop for the community last November. He liked Gabbard’s proposal to slow the proposal down, saying he doesn’t want to see the property undersold.

    “Having this proposal to stop the process, for me, is good for business, good for evaluating the property and doing due diligence that needs to happen,” he said.

    Welch says the city has planned for more than a decade and that it’s time to move forward.

    “Planning first is great, but planning perpetually is not something we should do,” Welch said. “When I ran for office, folks didn’t want to see continued planning. They want to see impact from a 40-year promise when the land was taken for economic inclusion at that site.”

  • Pasco County schools turn to truancy petitions over attendance issues

    LAND O’ LAKES, Fla. — The Pasco County School District is taking a tougher stance on student absences, and some families may find themselves answering to a judge.

    The district is filing truancy petitions against families when kids miss too many days.

    Superintendent Dr. John Legg says truancy petitions are a last resort. So far, the district has only filed about a dozen petitions. But still, some families say the policy is concerning.

    “Attendance is crucial. When our students miss school, they miss the knowledge, they miss the activities, they miss the learning from the other students, and they fall behind,” Legg said.

    He says truancy has been a big problem in Pasco County schools since the pandemic. Right now, 1,200 students are considered truant, meaning they’ve missed more than 15 days of school in 90 days, all unexcused. So the district had to buckle down, sending out truancy petitions.

    “What we’re looking at are those most severe cases where we have students that are absent 40, 50 days out of 90 days, bringing these before the court to get their assistance in order to help these students get to school so they can get the education they deserve,” he said.

    Families who receive truancy petitions will have to go before a judge and explain why their child missed so much school. The judge will decide the action to take. 

    Jessica Silber, owner of Elevate Advocate & Learning Co., says the policy has some of her clients concerned.

    “I think there can be some great intentions sometimes behind guidelines but not always considering the needs of all students,” said Silber.

    Silber works with families who have children with special needs, like autism. She says while therapy appointments are excused absences, these families sometimes deal with other challenges, like anxiety or behavioral problems, that may not always come with a doctor’s note.

    “If there is something impacting their attendance outside of your control, then let’s go for an evaluation, let’s get it documented, in case something does come up and you have to go to court,” she said.

    Legg says ultimately the goal is support, not punishment, and keeping kids in class.

    “Those are all the things our social workers and schools work with our families on to make those excused absences and to work with families. What we’re talking about are those chronic absenteeism where parents simply do not bring their children to school,” he says.

    Legg says there are about 350 students whose absenteeism is excessive and warrants a truancy petition. The district will chip away at filing those petitions to help the courts keep from getting backed up.

  • Looking back at the Artemis I mission

    KENNEDY SPACE CENTER — As all eyes are on the crewed Artemis II that will see the return of humans to the moon, it pays to look back at the challenges Artemis I had to overcome, such as liquid hydrogen leaks and two hurricanes.

    The crewed Artemis II will have NASA’s Cmdr. Gregory Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, mission specialists Christina Koch and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen go to the moon for a flyby mission.

    But back in 2022, NASA attempted to launch the uncrewed Artemis I mission from Launch Pad 39B many times, with either mechanical problems or Mother Nature getting in the way.

    From the moment Artemis I launched the Space Launch System rocket and how Orion orbited the moon and returned in a splashdown, all looked OK. Except NASA engineers noticed that something was not right with the capsule’s heat shield.

    When Artemis I was re-entering Earth’s atmosphere at 25,000 mph (40,234 kph), a material called Avcoat that was on the heat shield did not work as designed.

    The Avcoat material is designed to protect a spacecraft from extreme temperatures by burning away as it heats up, instead of sending that heat to the capsule itself.

    And the temperatures the Orion experienced during re-entry was 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit (2,760 degrees Celsius).

    Instead of burning away during re-entry, the Avcoat broke up into chunks.

    Don Platt, director of Florida Tech’s Spaceport Education Center, explained what NASA saw.

    “Now what they saw with the Artemis I mission was that the erosion rate or how much of the material disappeared, as that got heated up and and went through the upper reaches of the atmosphere, was up more than they thought it would be. And, so of course, the problem with that is that, well, is there enough margin and why is it heating up more than we anticipated that it would? So that, of course, they had to go back to the drawing board then …,” he explained to Spectrum News.

    NASA stated it has resolved the problem, but the issue with the heat shield was the reason why the Artemis II and III missions were pushed.

    Artemis II was supposed to be launched in 2025, and Artemis III was going to take off in 2025, but it was pushed back to 2026, with the current launch date being mid-2027.

    Platt said NASA used that time to improve on the heat shield.

    “NASA has spent time doing additional testing, beefing up the heat shield a little bit in places where it might need it. And, of course, they’ve had a couple of years to go through all of that and, make sure they are indeed ready to go now,” he said.

    Spectrum News reached out to NASA for comment and has not yet heard back.

    However, during a 2024 press conference, engineers and experts were able to re-create the conditions that the heat shield experienced during re-entry and developed a new method to be applied to the heat shield, said Amit Kshatriya, the deputy associate administrator for the Moon to Mars Program Office within the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate.

    Officials highlighted that had there been a crew inside the Orion during Artemis I, they would have been safe and comfortable during re-entry, even with the heat shield issue.

    NASA had previously stated that the purpose of the Artemis I was to iron out any issues that came up and that they were generally very pleased with how the mission went.

    And even though those issues have been ironed out, NASA is currently conducting a wet dress rehearsal on the Artemis II before sending up the four astronauts who will be the first humans to go back to the moon in more than 50 years.

  • Winter is the perfect time to start your native Ohio gardening

    CLEVELAND — Gardening isn’t a task normally associated with winter, but February can be the perfect time to plant.


    What You Need To Know

    • Wild Ones Greater Cleveland is putting on two Winter Sowing Workshops in partnership with the seed library, one on Feb. 8 and one on Feb. 11

    “A lot of times people will get a native seed and not know what to do with it. They’ll try planting it and it won’t work if you plant it in the summer,” explained Allison Welch, the Education Coordinator for Wild Ones Greater Cleveland.

    The group is a nonprofit run by volunteers, and it is putting on a series of winter-sowing workshops. 

    “You need to do it in the winter to experience the right kind of conditions to sprout by spring,” Welch said 

    Various seeds native to Ohio need winter weather for proper germination and sprouting.

    The workshop is free and takes participants through all the steps of planting seeds that will sprout in spring and summer. 

    The workshop is the perfect pairing for West Creek Conservatory’s Native Seeds Library program, which is now in its second year. 

    “So here we got the display, with our native seed library,” said Danielle Dejak, the Outreach Coordinator for the West Creek Conservancy.

    The program provides free seeds at various locations across northern Ohio. 

    “This year we really have expanded up to nine locations and up to 12,000 seed packets now,” Dejak said. 

    Now in its second year, the seed library has expanded because of high demand, partnering with organizations like Holden Garden and Forests, who collected many of the seeds themselves. 

    So why plant native seeds?

    “Native plants are gonna provide a lot of food and habitat for pollinators and just our native wildlife in general and because of their deep root systems they are going to really help with stormwater management, helping to slow the flow of that rainfall and reduce flooding and erosion,” Dejak said. 

    If you’re feeling antsy this winter, it might be time to consider some gardening. 

    Wild Ones has partnered with the seed bank to offer a free winter sowing course on Feb. 8 and Feb. 11. 

    “Come spring, you got a beautiful garden ready to go,” Welch said.

    Knowing how to help our four-legged friends can be the difference between life and death. 

     “One really big key is if it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them,” Owner of Queen City Veterinary Clinic, Larry Keller, said.

    Keller shared tips on ways you can keep your pet safe and signs you need to worry about.

    “The biggest things you worry about hypothermia, if they’re shaking, if they’re looking for a place to hide and get warm, that’s a sign you need to go ahead and bring them inside,” Keller explained.

    Similar to people, pets’ tolerance to the cold can vary based on their size, age and coat.

    The American Veterinary Medical Association said it’s important to look out for signs like whining, shivering, if your pet seems weak or starts seeking warm places to burrow.

    “If you have a dog that’s been inside the entire winter and you decide I want to take them for a walk, I wouldn’t stay more than five or ten minutes outside,” Keller warned.

    Another way to protect a pet during the winter is to outfit them with small boots, a sweater or a dog coat.

    If they’ve been outside, wipe them down. That’s not only to keep them dry but to remove any de-icing products they may collect.

    Keller said if travelling with a pet, make sure you don’t leave them in a car for a long period.

    “Leaving your dog in the car, people think about it during the summer because your car gets real hot, but think about it you drive to Kroger for 15 minutes, then you come outside and get in your car it’s cold, the same thing happens to your dog,” Keller continued.

    And lastly, be prepared by talking to a veterinarian about anything your pet may need during the cold weather.

  • Farm owner speaks on importance of conserving land

    HARDEE COUNTY, Fla. — With more people calling Florida their home comes increased development, but one state program is working to preserve agricultural land as growth continues.

    Over 500 applications were submitted to the Rural and Family Lands Protection Program statewide in 2025.

    In a quiet corner of Hardee County sits land that’s been in Ned Hancock’s family since 1855.

    “Outside of their love of God and their love of their family, nothing meant more to them than this land,” said Hancock.

    Though his family didn’t originally farm the property, Hancock knew he wanted to put it to use.

    He started in the citrus industry and later expanded into cattle. Today, the family owns over 3,500 acres, known as Charlie Creek Marsh.

    Hancock said the land isn’t just part of his history — it’s his livelihood.

    “Every agricultural endeavor has its challenges and its ups and downs, so we’re hoping that the next 20 years make up for the last 20 years,” he said.

    That’s why Hancock applied to the Rural and Family Lands Protection Program about a year ago.

    The program protects rural land through permanent agricultural land conservation easements, even as surrounding areas grow. 

    About three miles of Hancock’s family property is now part of the program, a decision he said benefits not just his farm, but the community as well.

    “For generations now, it’s going to be just like this,” he said. “It’s going to be cleaning up our water, clearing up our air, creating wildlife corridors.”

    According to the Florida Department of Agriculture, interest in conservation programs has increased by over 90% since 2023.

    “Our agricultural landscapes are what’s left of green space in our state. It’s what much of our wildlife is utilizing to continue to thrive in a rapidly growing state,” said Conservation Florida President and CEO Traci Deen.

    Since the program started in 2001, officials said over 200,000 acres of working agricultural land have been preserved.

    For Hancock, it’s about protecting the future so farmers like him can preserve their way of life for generations to come.

    “I hope 150 years from now, some of my descendants are saying, ‘Man, I’m glad they did this,’” he said.
