Before becoming a beauty editor, my background was in English literature (more specifically, novels and essays produced by women through the 19th and 20th centuries). Spending so much time in the company of books provided endless inspiration and intrigue in my daily life, transporting me to places and introducing me to people I never knew I needed before cracking open a cover. Between essays, presentations, and tests, I spent every possible moment in college reading to my heart’s delight. Trust me—I have the horrible eyesight of a classic bibliophile to prove it.
Whenever I get the opportunity, I love drawing connections between some of my favorite literary works and the scents I wear on rotation. Keep reading for a look into my world with eight gorgeous scents to spark your imagination and five must-have home fragrances to help set the ambience before you dive into those pages.
Murphy wore this iconic Tom Ford Beauty bronzer during his Oppenheimer press tour. Bromell would apply it to the high points of the face, where the sun would naturally hit, for natural-looking warmth and definition. He’d start with the pièce de resistance—the cheekbones—then move on to other areas of the face. “I work it into the left and right of the forehead, the points that are a bit more raised on the face shape, and the center of the nose, a bit on the chin, the ears, and a little on the neck—but a very light dusting,” he said.
Bromell says this bronzer is a good fit for everyone, including men like Murphy, who are walking the red carpet, thanks to a subtle, glitter-less formula. “The powder doesn’t have any glitter or shimmer, or anything like that, which I think is very important for male clients,” Bromell said. “You want them to look sunkissed, but you don’t want them to look like they’re wearing makeup.”
If you’ve been in the presence of this famous Tom Ford fragrance, there’s a good chance you’d recognize it right off the bat. From its undeniably full-body notes of juicy black cherries to the more subtle notes of sweet almond, Turkish rose, and sambac, this fragrance offers an adult version of the fruity perfumes of our youth. Housed in a pale-pink bottle that’s reminiscent of cherry blossoms, the popularity of this Tom Ford scent has given way to two other beloved cherry fragrances, including the bright and playful Electric Cherry and mysterious Cherry Smoke.
Developed by perfumer Louis Turner and released in 2018, Tom Ford’s Lost Cherry has only grown in popularity since its debut. Now, however, there’s no denying that it has become a polarizing fragrance among perfume lovers. Standing against the thousands of banner reviews for the fragrance are almost as many negative reviews. Many critics claim the fragrance’s candy-like finish is sickly sweet. The heavy price tag also remains a popular topic of contention, with the 0.3-ounce bottle priced at $80 and the 3.4-ounce bottle clocking in at $570.
While some designer labels boast one (okay, maybe two) iconic fragrances, Tom Ford arguably has at least five times that number. Black Orchid, Fucking Fabulous, Oud Wood, Tobacco Wood… The brand has debuted one timeless and covetable fragrance after another, each welcomed with a steeper and steeper upward slope of appreciation.
As beauty editors, we’ve always held a special appreciation for the fashion designer’s well-versed selection of collectible beauty items, but the appreciation doesn’t stop at Ford’s cult-loved bronzers or lash-extending mascaras. Tom Ford perfumes are some of the most highly sought-after and beloved fragrances in the industry, and if you own one (or more), you likely already know the enchanting spell they cast on those around you. If you wear one of Tom Ford’s bewitching scents, you will get compliments, and you will get questions—it just comes with the territory.
There’s no such thing as one “best” perfume. We’re all unique human beings with entirely different tastes and preferences when it comes to scent. But we’d be remiss not to pay our respects to the most popular, fastest-selling perfumes from House Ford. Below, we’re sharing the 10 best Tom Ford perfumes to try in the order in which they appear on the brand’s best-sellers page. Looking for your new fragrance infatuation? This would be Estée Lauder’s biggest acquisition to date, and, notably, its first fashion brand. The company already owns Tom Ford Beauty, which it helped launch back in 2005, when the designer went off on his own and started his namesake company with Domenico De Sole. Ford expanded into ready-to-wear in 2010. With this latest acquisition, it will gain control of the brand’s apparel business as well, a first for the cosmetics company.
In early July, Bloomberg reported that Tom Ford, the brand, had brought on Goldman Sachs to advise on a potential sale that could value it at “several billion dollars,” and that would potentially “include an option that would give any new owner of Tom Ford the right to work with its founder after the sale.”
In August, The Estée Lauder Companies emerged as a potential buyer, the Wall Street Journal reported, with Dana Cimilluca, Cara Lombardo and Ben Dummett writing:“Estée Lauder is especially interested in the beauty business, with which it already has a longstanding licensing deal, and could potentially look to license the clothing lines elsewhere, the people familiar with the matter said.”
By November, Kering — i.e. Ford’s former employer — entered the race, per the Journal. But over the weekend, the Financial Timesreported that Estée Lauder had beat out other interested parties and was preparing to share news of the deal, which includes Tom Ford’s debt.

UPDATE: Nov. 15, 2022, 5:20 p.m. ET
Estée Lauder Companies Inc. has made it official, announcing it’s buying the Tom Ford brand and all its intellection property in a deal valued at $2.8 billion.
“Under the stewardship of ELC, the purchase of the Tom Ford brand and the extension of its current licensing partners will allow for continuity and the further evolution of the Tom Ford brand as one of the preeminent global luxury brands of the twenty-first century,” the company said, in a statement.
“I could not be happier with this acquisition, as The Estée Lauder Companies is the ideal home for the brand,” Tom Ford said, in a statement. “They have been an extraordinary partner from the first day of my creation of the company, and I am thrilled to see them become the luxury stewards in this next chapter of the Tom Ford brand.”
Ford, the man, will stay on — at least “through the end of calendar 2023,” per Estée Lauder. His longtime business partner, Domenico De Sole, “will stay on as a consultant until that same time.”
The deal also won’t affect Tom Ford’s two big licensing partners, Ermenegildo Zegna (for fashion, accessories and underwear) and Marcolin (for eyewear): Estée Lauder said these relationships will not only continue, but be “extended,” with Zegna “acquiring operations of the Tom Ford fashion business necessary to perform its obligations as licensee.”
