  • Hades 2, slot machine horror and other new indie games worth checking out

    [ad_1]

Welcome to our latest roundup of what’s going on in the indie game space. It’s been a packed week, with tons of new releases worth highlighting and Tokyo Game Show taking place.

Before we get started, make sure to check out our recap of Kojima Productions’ 10th anniversary showcase if you need to catch up. I can’t quite get my head around how a literal walking sim from Hideo Kojima might work. Sony had a bunch of things to show off during its PlayStation State of Play this week, including a few tasty-looking indies like Chronoscript: The Endless End. So too did Xbox in its Tokyo Game Show stream — Double Dragon Revive looks neat, as does Rhythm Doctor.

Also, the developers and publishers of several of this week’s arrivals delayed them to get some breathing space from Hollow Knight: Silksong… only to run right into Hades 2. That’s extremely unfortunate. But the teams behind some newcomers — Baby Steps, CloverPit, Aethermancer, Star Birds and Deadly Days: Roadtrip — are doing something about that. They’ve teamed up for a special Steam sale and bundle of their games. Love to see indie developers supporting each other.

    New releases

Hades 2 is finally out of early access on PC. The full game is now available on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 as well.

Reviews have been pretty stellar for Supergiant’s sequel. I played a little of it in early access last year, but decided to hold off getting in too deep until the full version arrived. And, of course, I now have a ton of other games to play. I’ll absolutely spend some time with Hades 2 eventually. But there’s another roguelite that’s soaking up a lot of my time right now…

I feel grimy when I’m playing CloverPit. I’m imprisoned in a tiny, rusty, metallic room that wouldn’t look out of place in Silent Hill‘s Otherworld. I have a debt to pay and deadlines to meet, with some coins, lucky charms and a slot machine to help me reach my goals and hopefully escape. Failure means plunging into a dark abyss.

Whenever I haven’t been playing EA Sports FC 26 in my free time, I willingly keep returning to this disgusting cell. I try desperately to find synergies between the lucky charms to break the slot machine and make sure I earn enough coins to resolve the arrears. Offers made by telephone, almost Deal or No Deal-style, can help while perhaps adding a greater risk of losing all my coins.

Panik Arcade has stressed that this is a horror game, not a gambling simulator. The whole idea is to bend the rules in your favor.

I haven’t yet had a successful run. I did pretty well a few times with builds focused on cherries and diamonds, though deadline 11 has remained out of reach for me thus far. No spoilers here, but there’s a big jump from the 10th deadline’s debt level.

The game is incredibly sticky, and I can see myself sinking many, many more hours into CloverPit. (I won’t be alone there. I just watched a video of someone who put 155 hours into the demo.)

CloverPit, which is published by Future Friends Games, is out now on Steam

I had fun with the Baby Steps demo this summer, but after looking forward to this literal walking simulator for a couple of years, I realize that I’m more likely to watch a YouTube video of someone playing it than try to beat it myself. I’d probably do that on a treadmill so I can get my own steps in at the same time.

This is the latest game from Bennett Foddy (QWOP, Getting Over It), Gabe Cuzzillo and Maxi Boch, who previously made Ape Out together. It sees “an unemployed failson” being forced to get up off his rear end and make it to the peak of a mountain. To take Nate there, you’ll need to pick up one foot and move it onto (hopefully) stable ground before moving his other leg, taking one clumsy step at a time to reach his destination.

Baby Steps is supposed to be as funny as it is frustrating. You will fall. A lot. Sometimes in a way that erases much of your progress. But as with working out, progress is the point. If only Nate would actually use his damn arms for stability as well. Then you might really start to see some results.

Baby Steps is out now on Steam and PS5.

I’ve had my eye on Bloodthief for a while. It’s a vampiric, medieval take on fast-paced dungeon running in the vein of Ghostrunner with Ultrakill-style murdering. A solo developer who goes by Blargis is behind this game, which hit Steam this week.

Giving so much of my attention to CloverPit and don’t-call-it-FIFA (and a few others we’ll get to momentarily) means I haven’t much time to check out Bloodthief yet. Still, I look forward to being as terrible at it as I am at Ghostrunner 2.

One of the highlights of Playdate Season 2 is Blippo+, a parody of cable TV. The FMV experience from Yacht, Telefantasy Studios, Noble Robot and publisher Panic has moved into the color TV age, as it’s now available on Nintendo Switch and Steam.

As you channel surf the otherworldly broadcasts and observe the offbeat alien TV personalities doing their thing, you might start to piece together a deeper story that’s playing out across the shows and news programs. Blippo+ is such a strange, wonderful thing. I’m glad it exists and that more people have the chance to enjoy it.

Consume Me is a coming-of-age life sim about a student who is entering her last year of high school and dealing with the stress and complexity of that painful time. For Jenny, that means managing chores (such as laundry and walking the dog), her studies, dates with her boyfriend and an eating disorder. Time management is a key factor, and you’ll try to stay on top of everything by playing minigames.

Consume Me, which is based in part on co-developer Jenny Jiao Hsia’s own experiences as a teenager, won the Seamus McNally Grand Prize at this year’s Independent Games Festival. AP Thomson, Jie En Lee, Violet W-P and Ken “coda” Snyder are the other developers of the game, which Hexecutable published. Consume Me is out now on Steam for PC and Mac.

Hotel Barcelona brought together two famed game directors, Swery (Hidetaka Suehiro), of Deadly Premonition fame and No More Heroes creator Suda51 (Goichi Suda). The latter came up with the concept for this game, which Swery announced all the way back in 2019. So the roguelite had been in the works for quite some time before it checked in to PC and consoles this week.

Here, you’ll fight your way through a hotel that serial killers have overrun. You can rope in a couple of friends to help you thanks to multiplayer support. In the style of many FromSoftware titles, you’ll also have the option to invade other players’ games and play spoiler by taking them out and undoing their progress. That seems really mean, though. I don’t know why anyone would do that.

Hotel Barcelona, from Swery’s White Owls Inc. and publisher Cult Games, is out now on Steam, Xbox Series X/S and PS5.

    Upcoming

Annapurna Interactive is always a publisher worth paying attention to given its strong track record. This week, it revealed three upcoming adventure games during a showcase at Tokyo Game Show. I checked out demos for a couple of them, and I’ve already added all three to my wishlist.

D-topia is set in an apparent utopia run by artificial intelligence. You play as a maintenance worker who tries to keep things humming along by solving logic puzzles in the factory and helping out others with their problems. Your choices decide how the story plays out and, shock horror, things might not be going entirely smoothly behind the scenes.

I dig the very clean look here. It reminds me a bit of Mirror’s Edge. The dialogue in the demo is fun too. Expect to see this narrative-driven puzzler from Marumittu Games land on Steam, Epic Games Store, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Windows PC via the Xbox App in 2026.

Also coming to Steam, Epic Games Store, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Windows PC via the Xbox App next year is People of Note by Iridium Studios. This is billed as a “musical narrative adventure” that sees pop singer Cadence seeking stardom with the help of other musicians who specialize in other genres. You’ll need to time your attacks to the beat to make them more effective, while genres play a role in making battles more dynamic.

Turn-based combat generally isn’t my bag and I didn’t enjoy it in this demo either. However, Iridium wants people to be able to play the game their way. People of Note will include the option to disable things like turn-based combat and environmental puzzles. That immediately makes the game more appealing to me, especially because I like what I’ve seen of the world, story and characters. The promise of “full-length cinematic musical sequences” sure sounds good to me too.

The third game Annapurna showed off is Demi and the Fractured Dream. I haven’t had a chance to try the demo for this one as yet, but it looks like a Zelda-esque action adventure with environmental puzzles, platforming and plenty of hacking and slashing. As Demi, a cursed hero who is trying to save the world by slaying a trio of Accursed Beasts, you’ll have a variety of tools and spells at your disposal. Time your dodges just right, and you’ll power up your next set of attacks.

This game from Yarn Owl is coming to Steam, Epic Games Store, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Windows PC via the Xbox App in 2026.

This week’s State of Play included a gameplay trailer for Halloween, from IllFonic and co-publisher Gun Interactive. We also got a release date for it. The horror game is coming to PlayStation, Xbox, Steam and Epic Games Store on September 8, 2026. Why it’s not dropping in late October is beyond me.

This is an asymmetric multiplayer game in the vein of Friday the 13th: The Game (also from IllFonic and Gun) and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, which Gun published. Three teammates will play as civilians who are trying to save the intended NPC victims of Jason Voorhees. If you’d rather go it alone, though, you can terrorize Haddonfield, Illinois as the legendary killer in a single-player mode.

  • How to watch Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show livestream

    [ad_1]

Curious to see if those Forza Horizon 6 rumors are true? You may not have long to wait. Xbox’s presentation at the Tokyo Game Show 2025 is fast approaching. You can watch the event live right here on September 25 at 6AM ET.

Forza Horizon 6 is rumored to have a Japan setting, making this week’s event a logical venue for its announcement. That’s not the only thing to go on. Windows Central reported last month that it had seen official documentation suggesting the game would be announced at the Tokyo Game Show. An Xbox executive producer even posted earlier this month that it would be an event “you don’t want to miss.” (Am I sadistic for hoping he was hyping up something like a new Xbox dashboard feature?)

The Xbox brand could use some positive mojo. Last week, Microsoft announced that it would raise console prices for the second time in less than five months. The increase, which begins on October 3, was “due to changes in the macroeconomic environment.” (That sounds like a copywriter’s answer to “How do you say ‘tariffs’ without actually saying ‘tariffs?’”) It’s all the more reason the company would love to shift your focus to something fun.

You can stream Microsoft’s event below on September 25 at 6AM ET.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins TGS 2024 Hands-on Preview – Battlefield Glory Beckons

    [ad_1]

When it comes to realizing the ultimate power fantasy, nothing quite comes close to the 1v1,000 combat that the Dynasty Warriors series delivers. Take your pick of a general, get onto the battlefield, and eliminate all that stand in your way – it’s always a satisfying ride. However, the series has undergone some recent changes, and going into a hands-on session of Dynasty Warriors: Origins at Tokyo Game Show 2024, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect.

Image Source: Koei Tecmo via Twinfinite

What Omega Force and Koei Tecmo have put together is a refreshed formula that retains that classic feel of the series, but infused with new but meaningful changes to help enhance your enjoyment on the battlefield. As part of the demo, it was time to take on the Battle of Sishui Gate against the forces of Dong Zhuo, and taking down his leading generals, Li Jue and Hua Xiong, meaning I was in for a tough fight.

Playing as the Wanderer, whose place in the overall narrative is still something to be discovered by players, you have the freedom to choose from all sorts of weapons that suit your play style. Depending on your chosen companion, the starting positions will differ, too.

    Dynasty Warriors: Origins Map

Satisfied with my choices, it was time to let loose the dogs of war. While seeing swarms of enemies on screen is a common sight, Dynasty Warriors: Origins has upped the ante in both number and visual fidelity. It is no Space Marine 2, but it is still the most impressive showing for the series yet.

Plenty of enemy soldiers fell as I got to grips with the more familiar combo system of differing button presses, while more powerful Battle Arts moves can be unleashed once you have built up enough of your special meter, further adding more power to your attacks.

This comes in handy the most when facing the more formidable generals, who have gotten an upgrade as well even on the easier difficulties. While they used to be trampled with ease, players need to take in mind the new Fortitude system, which acts as their additional layer of defense against your attacks. Only with smart timing and perfect parries will you be effective in reducing their Fortitude, opening them up for sustained punishment. These generals can unleash special attacks of their own, so knowing when to counter or dodge will ensure you live to fight another day.

Between smashing the countless soldiers and engaging in tougher fights against enemy generals, it is clear that the moment-to-moment gameplay is more engaging than ever before. Furthermore, there are tactical elements at play as well, with the Wanderer’s personal guard capable of carrying out specific orders like charging, shooting volleys of arrows, or encircling an enemy when you call for it.

This was prominently displayed as the final battle drew near, with Hua Xiong and Li Jue making their last stand at Sishui Gate. As the allies charged down toward their foes, so did my guards and the Wanderer, allowing for more visceral combat and the use of the aforementioned tactics. It can be very overwhelming to the uninitiated, but for a fan, this is truly the peak of the series thus far.

It doesn’t take long for the enemies to feel the sharp blade of our forces, and Hua Xiong challenges the Wanderer to a duel, showcasing another new feature in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. A solo fight between an immensely powerful foe, it becomes a more daunting affair as both sides look on. Knowing when to press the advantage or to back off, timing your blocks and dodges, it is all key to coming out on top. That sense of triumph when dealing that finishing blow is something that I hope to relive over and over again in the story, which is always a good sign.

As victory drew near, the enemy tried to turn the tide with one final push, and together with my companion Guan Yu, it was time to finally witness the sheer power of the Musou moves. Just like everything else, this showstopping move remains a sight to behold, made even better with this new iteration as tons of enemies get decimated in an instant, and those close-up, slo-mo shots of your heroes only add to the excitement.

Just as I thought things were over, cue the arrival of everyone’s favorite adversary, Lu Bu. Many have tried and failed, and given that he possessed a large pool of Fortitude, this was certainly not the time and place to snatch victory from the demon. Yet, I very much look forward to the rematch in just a few months, and any fans of the Dynasty Warriors series should as well.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins will be released on January 17, 2025, on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii TGS 2024 Hands-on Preview – Solid Sea Legs

    [ad_1]

The Like a Dragon series has never shied away from the ridiculous, even in its early days, but not even the most ardent of fans would have expected something like Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. A spin-off starring Goro Majima that takes place after Infinite Wealth, players will be diving into high-sea shenanigans and trying to help the anti-hero get back on his feet again after losing his memory.

While the details of that narrative will be something that will take the spotlight when the game is out in the wild, the time I had with the game at Tokyo Game Show was all about showing off the various activities and areas that will likely suck up all your time once more.

After getting our hands dirty learning about Majima’s Sea Dog and Mad Dog fighting styles, which are even crazier than before, I had 30 minutes to do whatever I wanted as a new pirate captain. That meant belting out a few tunes in karaoke, dishing out food with Crazy Delivery, or racing Mario Kart-style with Dragon Kart. Using the Segway is still hilarious, especially with the young Noah having his own mini version, and the random battles and Most Wanted encounters give you plenty of opportunities to show off your combat skills.

It is vintage Like a Dragon, but with a distinctly Majima flavor, and that is a good thing as fans have been clamoring for more of the character with each new entry. While this may not be a full-fledged mainline adventure, it is still something to treasure and behold, simply because Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio continues to be very good at what they do.

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii Madlantis

This is obvious when looking at Madlantis, a true pirate playground similar to the Castle in Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, but with more emphasis on the piracy theme. With the shiny lights and the very fact it’s built into a shipwreck, one can already imagine the sheer breadth of things that can be done during your time here. Although it wasn’t possible to fully explore what this place has to offer, the teases show plenty of promise for Majima in this particular adventure, with combat rightfully being the main attraction.

Gone is the turn-based formula of recent times, and it’s back to the fast-moving combo sequences that typified early Like a Dragon games. In Mad Dog style, it is always entertaining to see Majima go to town on his foes and build up that Madness Gauge, before summoning his doppelgangers to finish the fight with a flashy spinning attack. Yet, the new Sea Dog style is no slouch either, letting players utilize cutlasses, guns, and his new grappling hook to good measure. By timing your combos well and employing Heat actions, it almost feels like the action-heavy combat never went away.

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii Sea Dog

That said, it is not to say that Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is reverting back to the classic formula. Instead, it feels like a natural evolution of the modern foundations of the series through the distinct, colorful lens of Goro Majima. It is pure chaos and fun, serving as a companion piece rather than the main event, but with the team’s track record, it is likely to be a substantial offering that will keep fans wanting more. It’s time to set sail.

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii will be released on February 28, 2025, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

  • Hands-On With Roguelite Puzzler ‘Immune Simulator Type Z’ – TouchArcade

Hands-On With Roguelite Puzzler ‘Immune Simulator Type Z’ – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

There weren’t a whole ton of indie mobile games at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. It’s just the way the trends are going, friends. But we found a few, and of the ones we saw I think this one might have the best chance of really hitting it off with our readers. It’s called Immune Simulator Type Z, and it’s a very cool roguelite strategy game that is coming to Steam later this year and mobile a little while after. I went hands-on with it, and I’ve got a video and some old-fashioned text to hit you with.

The basic story set-up of Immune Simulator Type Z isn’t going to blow anyone away with its creativity. There’s been some kind of zombie apocalypse, and you’re a survivor. You have to make your way through each stage of the game by completing certain goals. Stages take the form of a board filled with various cards including your own player character. You have twenty-five energy points and ten hit points to start with. The energy determines how many turns you can take before you collapse. The hit points determine how much damage you can take before you’re dead. So, you know, be careful of those.

Each turn you can move in one of the cardinal directions, interacting with whatever card you’ve moved into. Sometimes that’s a monster, which will pit your power against theirs and leave one of you dead. Maybe it’s a health kit, giving you more hit points. Perhaps a battery, giving you more energy. Weapons, armor, other survivors, and more can appear on the board. There are also random cards that will give you some kind of surprise. Some of those are good, some are bad. One that I grabbed activated a rush of zombies, making them all aggressively move towards me on each turn. Another one poisoned me. Another time I was made temporarily invincible. A nice bit of random spice.

As mentioned, the goals for each stage will vary. Sometimes you’re tasked with defeating a set number of monsters of a certain level. Other times you’re gathering supplies, or rescuing survivors. Once you’ve completed whatever the stage asks, a flag will appear on the field. If you can grab that flag, you’ve finished the stage and can move on to the next one. And that is pretty much that.

You really have to make every move count. There are times where you’re flush with hit points and armor and are feeling pretty good about your odds of survival, but one wrong move can turn things completely on their head surprisingly quickly. It’s especially difficult when you have objectives that require you to pick up objects next to other objects, as you have to plan your moves carefully to set up those situations. There’s a lot to chew on here.

I had a lot of fun in my brief time with Immune Simulator Type Z at the Tokyo Game Show. The premise and title make you think it’s going to be the same old thing, but playing it reveals a rather enjoyable strategy game. I’m looking forward to whenever it releases on mobile. From what the developers said, it’s going to hit Steam first and should be coming before the end of the year. They weren’t terribly clear on how long it would be until it came to mobile after that, but they assured me that it will be. Something to look forward to.

  • Level-5 Celebrates 25 Years With A Shift In Strategy – TouchArcade

Level-5 Celebrates 25 Years With A Shift In Strategy – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Back when I first started covering the Tokyo Game Show for TouchArcade, prolific RPG producer Level-5 could always be counted on for a fairly big booth with a blend of mobile and console games on offer. At recent shows, the company’s presence has been significantly smaller. The Yo-Kai Watch gravy train slowed down quite a bit, and Level-5 seemed to struggle with finding a new direction. Well, this year Level-5 was back in full force, proudly boasting about its noteworthy twenty-five years in business. But what about the company’s future? I had a look at what was on offer, and it seems as confusing as ever.

At its large, elaborate booth, Level-5’s representatives were handing out rather gorgeous booklets celebrating the company’s 25th anniversary. It goes into the past of the company and talks about its various franchises. It really is something to see it all laid out, from the humble beginnings of Dark Cloud on the PlayStation 2 to its stellar work assisting Square Enix with development on Dragon Quest 8 and Dragon Quest 9, into the boom years where it introduced the Professor Layton, Inazuma Eleven, and Ni no Kuni franchises and the absolute explosion of Yo-Kai Watch. We can see the company bet big on mobile, a bet that seems to have not paid off the way it had hoped. And then we see the potential future for the company, bringing forward a mix of familiar brands and new ones.

For mobile gamers, the short version at this point in time is that there isn’t much coming. Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road will still be coming for iOS and Android along with Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4/5 versions, but that seems to be all Level-5 has planned. Indeed, Level-5 seems to be going back to the hardware manufacturer that brought it its greatest successes: Nintendo. Of its currently announced future titles, all of them will be coming to the Nintendo Switch. That includes Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, the aforementioned Inazuma Eleven, DecaPolice, Professor Layton & the New World of Steam, and Ushiro. DecaPolice will also be coming to PlayStation platforms. Some of these games were on display at the show, but if the mobile version of Inazuma Eleven was there, I couldn’t find it.

While Level-5 may be pivoting away from mobile at the moment, it’s still hard to predict where its future lies. Leaning hard into the Switch would have been a smart move a couple of years ago, but time is ticking on the console’s life span and Level-5 isn’t exactly known for keeping its schedules of late. There’s little arguing with how remarkable Level-5’s first twenty-five years have been, but despite its strong show of confidence at this year’s Tokyo Game Show, it’s difficult to say what the next twenty-five will bring.

  • ‘Final Fantasy’ & ‘Dragon Quest’ Lead the Charge for Square Enix’s Line-Up – TouchArcade

‘Final Fantasy’ & ‘Dragon Quest’ Lead the Charge for Square Enix’s Line-Up – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Square Enix usually has one of the bigger, more attention-grabbing booths at the Tokyo Game Show, and this year was no different in that sense. The line-ups to play pretty much anything there were among the lengthiest of the show, and there were constant crowds gathered around all sides. What is interesting is that this year it had a slightly thinner line-up than usual, focusing on the latest games for its biggest brands. While that could have included mobile, Square Enix was mainly pushing its upcoming console releases more than anything else. But when you’ve got that kind of ammo, why not use it?

Depending on your angle of approach, you would either run smack into Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest – The Adventure of Dai or Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. The former is on the cusp of release, hitting Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4/5, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam on September 28th. We’ll likely have coverage of the game for you on either Switch or Steam once it’s out, but it’s certainly shaping up to be an enjoyable action-RPG. The latter… well, it doesn’t really fit TouchArcade’s jurisdiction, but Final Fantasy VII Rebirth looks absolutely incredible and I imagine everyone at TouchArcade Towers is looking forward to its release next February.

As for games coming to mobile, the big one is SaGa Emerald Beyond, the latest chapter in the long-running series and one that looks to be following in the footsteps of Scarlet Grace. That game will be hitting iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4/5 in 2024. Square Enix had a spiffy new trailer for the game that debuted at the show, but we’ll have to wait a while longer before we can get our hands on the game itself. I’m really excited for this one because I thought Scarlet Grace was absolutely brilliant.

Outside of that, the only things mobile-wise that Square Enix was promoting were the on-going War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, which apparently has a Final Fantasy VIII collaboration going on, and the Japan-only Elements With Emotion. Even outside of mobile, Square Enix didn’t have a ton of other things. Dragon Quest Monsters 3, Star Ocean: The Second Story R, PowerWash Simulator, and of course Final Fantasy XIV were all part of the publisher’s promotional materials and sizzle reels.

Oddly absent was much mention at all of Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, which recently launched on mobile. I suppose it’s in that awkward zone where there hasn’t been enough time since it came out for any major new updates, but enough time that it’s probably not worth devoting much time to promoting its initial launch. I wish it wasn’t so money-hungry, because there are a lot of things I like about it otherwise. Sadly that particular ingredient has a way of spoiling even the finest of soups. Well, that’s nothing to do with Tokyo Game Show.

The tradition of spectacle of Square Enix’s Tokyo Game Show booths certainly continued at the 2023 show, even if the publisher seemed to be relying more on a few key titles as opposed to the wide spread it has offered up in previous years. The booming theme song of Dragon Quest is a virtual constant at the Tokyo Game Show, and I’ve come to consider it part of the event’s soundtrack. Well, if you’re going to get by on only a handful of titles, there are worse things to bring to TGS than Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.
