  • ‘Tangled’ Live-Action Movie Finds Its Leads: Teagan Croft, Milo Manheim (Exclusive)

Walt Disney Pictures has let down its hair and has found the starring leads for Tangled, the live-action adaptation of its 2010 animated movie.

The studio has chosen rising Australian actress Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim, star of Disney Channel’s musical Zombies franchise, for the respective parts of Rapunzel, the curious and plucky would-be princess with magical hair, and Flynn Rider, the cocky outlaw thief who helps her escape her tower prison.

Michael Gracey, who counts the musical biopics Better Man and The Greatest Showman among his credits, is directing the feature, which, like the original, will have big musical elements. Kristin Burr, who has long-standing ties to the studio and was a producer on last summer’s Freakier Friday as well as 2021’s live-action Cruella, is producing. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do RevengeThor: Love and Thunder) wrote the script.

The decision comes after Disney sent up lanterns into the sky in the U.S. and the U.K. to find the feature project’s leads, with finalists screen testing in London in December before the winter holidays.

Now, Croft and Manheim step under the locks previously worn by Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi, who respectively voiced the parts in the original movie, now regarded as a modern classic and part of Disney Animation’s second renaissance.

The roles could have massive implications on the actors’ careers. A Disney live-action feature has the potential to become a billion-dollar worldwide hit — the live-action Lilo & Stitch was the year’s only billion-dollar hit until Disney’s animated Zootopia 2 came along. And it can cannonball a relative unknown into instant fame and open plenty of doors. But there is also the scrutiny that comes with playing beloved characters, especially from those who grew up watching Tangled on repeat, singing “I’ve Got a Dream” over and over in their living rooms. (The original movie grossed $591 million worldwide and spawned a successful Disney Channel series.)

Still, Disney is said to have been very deliberate and considerate in its choices and did not rush the process. The next major role to be up for consideration will be that of the villainous Mother Gothel, which at one point was going to be played by Scarlett Johansson.

Lucy Kitada is acting as an executive producer on Tangled.

Croft may perhaps be best known for playing Raven in the DC series Titans, which ran from 2018 to 2023, first on the short-lived platform DC Universe, then on HBO Max. She also starred in the Australian movie True Spirit, portraying Jessica Watson, the teenage sailor who attempted a solo journey to circumnavigate the globe. The 2023 movie streamed on Netflix.

Manheim, the son of actress Camryn Manheim, showed his musical chops over the course of four Zombies movies, the popular franchise that combines the undead with snappy songs about being in love and an outsider. In addition to also starring in Paramount+ series School Spirits, he starred as Seymour in a revival of Little Shop of Horrors.

  • Giants hire Tim Kelly, another former Tennessee Titans coordinator, to coach tight ends

Giants hire Tim Kelly, another former Tennessee Titans coordinator, to coach tight ends

The Giants hired former Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Tim Kelly as Brian Daboll’s new tight ends coach on Tuesday.

Kelly, 37, replaces Andy Bischoff, who left in a lateral move to the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday. Kelly is the second former Mike Vrabel Titans coordinator to join the Giants in the last two days.

Former Titans defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, 37, was tabbed on Monday as Daboll’s defensive coordinator replacement for Wink Martindale, who resigned in early January. That search took four weeks.

Vrabel, 48, is still a free agent after getting fired in Tennessee and not landing a head coaching job this cycle.

Bowen and Kelly both worked in Tennessee with Ryan Cowden, who is now the Giants’ executive advisor to GM Joe Schoen.

Cowden worked as the Titans’ director of player personnel (2016-17), VP of player personnel (2018-22) and interim GM (2022) before the organization hired Ran Carthon as their new full-time GM last year.

Kelly has worked for the Texans (2014-21) and Titans (2022-23), serving as offensive coordinator at times for both clubs. Tennessee was 27th in points scored and 28th in yards on offense last season while transitioning to rookie quarterback Will Levis.

At the moment, Daboll’s offensive staff features him as the head coach, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka — after being blocked from the Seattle Seahawks’ OC position — quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney, offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo (Raiders), wide receivers coach Mike Groh, running backs coach Joel Thomas (Saints) and the tight ends coach Kelly.

  • Frank Wycheck, NFL Great Who Threw The Lateral In ‘Music City Miracle,’ Dead At 52

Frank Wycheck, NFL Great Who Threw The Lateral In ‘Music City Miracle,’ Dead At 52

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Three-time Pro Bowl tight end Frank Wycheck, who threw the lateral that started the “Music City Miracle” launching the Tennessee Titans’ run to the franchise’s lone Super Bowl appearance, has died. He was 52.

Wycheck died at his Chattanooga home after an apparent fall where he hit his head Saturday morning, according to a statement from his family released through the Legacy consulting firm. His family said Sunday “with great sadness” that Wycheck was found Saturday afternoon.

His family will be following Wycheck’s wishes to work with experts for CTE research and on-going brain injury (TBI). Funeral services have not been scheduled yet.

“The Wycheck family appreciates the love and support they’ve received, but asks the public to please respect their privacy during this difficult time,” the family said in the statement.

Wycheck retired after his 11th NFL season. He got two concussions in the span of a month in 2003, missed six games, then finished the season with an AFC divisional loss in New England. He decided to retire despite still being under contract and wanting a Super Bowl ring.

“The physical stuff you can’t hide from,” Wycheck told The Associated Press in 2014. “If you have lingering effects and you go back into a game, from all my reading and studying on it … it could prove to be fatal.”

The “Music City Miracle” came with 16 seconds left in an AFC wild-card game Jan. 8, 2000. That TD return ranked fourth among the NFL’s greatest plays when the league celebrated its first 100 years in 2019.

Lorenzo Neal caught a kickoff and handed off to Wycheck, and he threw the ball across the field to Kevin Dyson, who sped 75 yards for the winning touchdown in the final seconds of a stunning 22-16 comeback victory over the Buffalo Bills.

Buffalo fans still insist the throw was a forward pass. Wycheck told the AP in 2019 he never had a doubt his pass was a lateral.

“Just flick it back,” Wycheck said. “That’s just the way I kind of jumped and threw it. And then I fell backward, and that was like the illusion of it.”

Tennessee then won on the road in Indianapolis and beat the Jaguars in Jacksonville in the AFC championship game. The Titans came up short on the final play in losing Super Bowl 34 to the then-St. Louis Rams in Atlanta.

Wycheck played 11 NFL seasons, starting in 1993 with Washington as a sixth-round pick out of Maryland. He was picked up by the then-Houston Oilers in 1995 and finished his career with the franchise that relocated to Tennessee in 1997.

He finished his career with 505 receptions, 5,126 yards and 28 touchdowns over 155 games. At that time, he trailed only Shannon Sharpe (815), Ozzie Newsome (662) and Kellen Winslow (541) for most catches among tight ends.

Wycheck played 137 games for the Titans and set a team record with at least one reception in 99 consecutive games. He also led the franchise in receiving for three straight seasons between 1999 and 2001. He was inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor in 2013.

The lateral for the “Music City Miracle” wasn’t his only throw. Wycheck was 5 of 6 for 148 yards and two TDs in his career, posting a perfect passer rating of 158.3.

Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk said the organization was devastated to hear of Wycheck’s death, a man loved by many whose memory will be cherished. She noted he was always open making key plays and “even part of a Miracle.”

“Frank’s name was synonymous with Titans football,” Strunk said in a statement. “He was such a huge part of our team’s success both on and off the field. He embraced this community and fan base immediately, and everyone loved him right back.”

Wycheck worked in Nashville sports talk radio after he stopped playing. He also did color commentary for Titans Radio through the 2016 season. The Philadelphia native moved home, then relocated to Chattanooga this summer to be near his family. He leaves behind two adult daughters and three grandchildren.

  • ‘Titans’ And ‘Doom Patrol’ Season 4 Have Release Dates, Trailers

‘Titans’ And ‘Doom Patrol’ Season 4 Have Release Dates, Trailers

The strangest little corner of the DC Universe has survived all the mass chaos over at WB/Discovery. That would be Titans and Doom Patrol, two refugee series from the DC Universe streaming service which was turned into a comic thing and its shows fled to HBO Max.

Titans is a gritty version of Teen Titans that has attracted a surprisingly large audience over the last few years, and remains one of the most in-demand comics series out there. Doom Patrol is easily the most absurd comic show in existence, even considering the likes of Harley Quinn and Peacemaker, an R-rated comedy that everyone, critics and fans, seem to love for its weirdness.

Now, both shows are about to return for their respective season 4s. We have release dates, and we have trailers. Albeit one shows a lot more than the other.

Titans season 4’s release date is November 3 on HBO Max, just a few weeks from now. HBO just released this new trailer teasing the season, which reveals that the villain the crew is facing this time is Brother Blood, a famed baddie in Teen Titans lore.

Meanwhile, Doom Patrol season 4’s release date is December 8, and features uh, carnivorous butts, which we’ve seen previously. And a lot more footage than Titans’ Brother Blood spot, without giving too much away:

Both of these shows are being broken up into two parts for season 4, where the first half will start now, and the second half will air some time in 2023. This is kind of unusual for these series, but with 10-13 episode seasons, they are longer than some similar superhero productions, so maybe that’s a factor.

DC’s TV content strategy is nearly as all over the place as its movie strategy, but I’d argue it’s going quite a bit better. I didn’t love last season of Titans, but it has its fanbase. Doom Patrol is always great. Harley Quinn and Peacemaker are fantastic. A Penguin series out of The Batman universe sounds promising, and an Arkham show may be coming later. Literally only one piece of all that is directly connected to the DCEU (Peacemaker) and I think the lineup is better for that. Over on film, we’re about the get the launch of Black Adam as The Rock attempts to change the power dynamics of the DC universe, and projects like The Flash and Aquaman 2 remains plagued with issues via their real-life actors.

I’m certainly looking forward to the return of Titans and Doom Patrol, and we don’t have long to wait now. Stay tuned.
