  • Imaginarium opens for 2025 season Wednesday after earlier confusion, organizers say

The Imaginarium holiday light show at Cal Expo opened on Wednesday following a delay and confusing announcements. The status of Imaginarium’s Utopia, billed as Northern California’s largest holiday light festival, was thrown into confusion Wednesday when a spokesperson for the event said a social media post announcing the opening after earlier delays was premature. “Several new electrical panels have been installed and are currently pending inspection,” Darla Givens told KCRA 3 two hours after Imaginarium Sacramento posted on Facebook about its reopening plans. “Once those panels are fully inspected and approved, Imaginarium will receive the green light to open. Until that process is complete, Imaginarium will remain closed.”(Previous coverage in the video above.)That process was since completed. Givens confirmed a second Facebook post that said “Cal Expo is definitely opening tonight” at 5 p.m. “The Imaginarium team has been working non-stop to install the new electrical panels,” she said. “Because this year’s footprint is three times larger than previous years, the process required extensive coordination and additional time to ensure every section of the experience is powered reliably.”Imaginarium was originally set to begin holding light shows on Friday, Nov. 21. But the opening day was called off abruptly within an hour of gates being set to open. Givens cited “unforeseen circumstances” at the time and said Saturday the delay was due to damaged electrical panels that needed to be replaced. During the closure, tickets appear to have continued being sold online. Organizers said that ticket holders could email them at imagine@imaginarium360.com to reschedule postponed dates. But some people said on Facebook they had trouble connecting with event organizers. Imaginarium aims to transform the fairgrounds into a glowing wonderland powered by more than 15 million lights. The event previously faced an opening day delay in 2023 because of severe weather. This year’s edition debuts an expanded footprint and a new entrance at Cal Expo’s Main Gate at Exposition and Heritage, which was supposed to streamline access for the season’s crowds. KCRA 3 got a tour of the attraction on Friday morning. Visitors can stroll through illuminated tunnels, step into mirror rooms, glide across a covered ice rink, snap photos with Santa, and cap the night with carnival rides and festive food and drink along Food Court Row near the waterpark.Organizers say Utopia aims to be a “perfect holiday escape,” where families and couples can make new traditions in a setting designed for dazzling photos and spirited nights out. Imaginarium traces its roots to the team behind the first U.S. Chinese Lantern Festival at Great America in 2011. The concept evolved into Global Winter Wonderland, which opened at Cal Expo in 2014, and later into Imaginarium, which organizers say is the largest holiday light festival in the country. The brand now spans multiple locations across California and Arizona.Learn more about tickets here. • Winning ticket for $980 million jackpot sold in Georgia, Mega Millions says

A Mega Millions player in Georgia won the $980 million jackpot on Friday, overcoming abysmal odds to win the huge prize. The single winning ticket was purchased at a Publix supermarket in Newnan, which is roughly 40 miles from Atlanta, a news release from the lottery says. “We are thrilled to congratulate the largest winner in our state’s history,” Georgia Lottery President and CEO Gretchen Corbin said in the news release.Georgia state law allows lottery winners to remain anonymous if they win a prize of $250,000 or more and provides a written statement asking for confidentiality. The win also earned the store a $50,000 retailer bonus from the Georgia Lottery. The numbers selected were 1, 8, 11, 12 and 57 with the gold Mega Ball 7.The winner overcame Mega Millions’ astronomical odds of 1 in 290.5 million by matching all six numbers. The next drawing will be on Tuesday.A winner can choose an annuity or the cash option — a one-time, lump-sum payment of $452.2 million before taxes. If there are multiple jackpot winners, the prize is shared. There were four Mega Millions jackpot wins earlier this year, but Friday’s drawing was the 40th since the last win on June 27, a game record, officials said.In September, two Powerball players in Missouri and Texas won a nearly $1.8 billion jackpot, one of the largest in the U.S. The current Mega Millions jackpot isn’t among the top 10 U.S. lottery jackpots but would be the eighth-largest for Mega Millions since the game began in 2002. Mega Millions offers lesser prizes in addition to the jackpot. The odds of winning any of these is 1 in 23. There were more than 800,000 winners of non-jackpot prizes from the Nov. 11 drawing. Tickets are $5 each and are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Half the proceeds from each Mega Millions ticket remains in the jurisdiction where the ticket was sold. Local lottery agencies run the game in each jurisdiction and how profits are spent is dictated by law. Sometimes gambling can become addictive. The group says anyone who gambles can be at risk. Its National Problem Gambling Helpline, 1-800-522-4700, connects anyone seeking assistance with a gambling problem to local resources.

  • Feeling lucky? Mega Millions jackpot jumps to $965 million for this Friday’s drawing

The Mega Millions jackpot jumped to nearly a billion dollars for the eighth time in the game’s history after no one won the drawing on Tuesday night.

The next drawing is scheduled for Friday, according to a Mega Millions news release. The estimated jackpot is $965 million, or $445.3 million if the winner takes a lump sum in cash.

No ticket matched all six numbers from Tuesday night’s drawing — white balls 10, 13, 40, 42 and 46, and the gold Mega Ball 1.

Friday’s drawing is the eighth-largest jackpot since the game began in 2002, according to the release. Seven billion-dollar jackpots have been awarded in the past; the most recent was the $1.269 billion prize won in California in Dec. 2024.

In Tuesday’s drawing, there were 809,030 winning tickets across all prizes, for a total of more than $27.9 million in winnings nationwide. Three tickets matched the five white balls to win the second-highest prize of $1 million. One ticket sold in Arizona had the 5X multiplier for a $5-million prize. Two other tickets, sold in Iowa and New York, had the 3X multiplier for the $3-million prize.

Twenty-seven tickets matched four white balls plus the Mega Ball to win the game’s third-highest prize.

Four Mega Millions jackpots were won earlier this year, and Friday’s drawing will be the 40th since the last win in June.

The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 290,472,336. The odds of winning any Mega Millions prize are 1 in 23.

The NWSL’s Washington Spirit have offered free and discounted tickets to furloughed federal employees for Sunday’s match with the San Diego Wave on Sunday, Oct. 5.

The 200 tickets that were offered via voucher were quickly claimed on Wednesday as the federal government was shut down.

The club will also offer a limited number of $10 tickets to friends and families of the furloughed employees. Sunday’s game is nearly a sell-out at Audi Stadium, which holds 14,900 fans and is the home to the Spirit and the MLS’s DC United.

‘This is not a political statement,’ team CEO Kim Stone told The Athletic. ‘This is us saying you’re hurting, we see you, we want to help you. This is about kindness, love, and a sense of community. We’re not trying to be antagonists. On the contrary, we’re trying to be kind, inclusive, celebrate and give hope to people who you know need a little inspiration today.’

The Spirit clinched a playoff berth with a resounding 4-0 win over Houston on Sunday. They reside in second place in the league standings and could sew up home-field advantage in the early stages of the playoffs with a win over San Diego and help from some other teams.

Stone is considering extending the ticket offers to the team’s final regular season home game on Oct. 18 vs. Orlando and into the playoffs.

  • Tickets go on sale for Sacramento Republic FC’s appearance in the USL Jägermeister Cup Final

The Sacramento Republic FC will have the chance to raise a cup before the season ends. The club will compete in the final of the USL Jägermeister Cup against the Hartford Athletic at Cal Expo’s Heart Health Park on Oct. 4. Tickets went on sale on Tuesday. The USL Cup began in 2024, featuring USL League One teams, which is a division below the Republic’s USL Championship. This year, all USL Championship teams joined the inter-league competition. For the Republic, the final will represent the first championship opportunity in Sacramento since the team won its league cup a decade ago in its inaugural season. Sacramento also made the final of another inter-season tournament, the U.S. Open Cup in 2022. That tournament featured the Republic besting three higher division Major League Soccer teams before losing in Orlando in the final. Captain Rodrigo “RoRo” López has been with Sacramento Republic FC for all three milestone moments. “We have the best fans in the league,” he said. “This is the best organization in the league and to be able to host the cup final is just very special for me, in particular. I’ve been here since the beginning and I was able to lift the cup and so many years have gone by and this club deserves more.” The Republic’s run in the USL Jägermeister Cup this year has succeeded in large part due to the performance of backup goalkeeper Jared Mazzola, who provided key saves in the last two matches, including when both went to penalties. “It’s been really, really fun being able to step into the role that is laid out for me,” Mazzola said. “So being able to do my part and help the team get to the final is really important and something that I hold in a high regard.” Meanwhile, the Republic remain in second place in their Western Conference in league play with just seven matches left in the regular season.See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel

  • So close! Powerball ticket sold in Sherman Oaks misses by one number, but still worth $1 million

The Powerball jackpot has risen to about $1.3 billion after no one won the latest drawing. The jackpot, with a scheduled drawing for Wednesday, has an estimated cash value of $589.0 million and is the fifth largest ever.

No one won the ticket with all six numbers drawn on Monday night, which were white balls 8, 23, 25, 40, 53 and red Powerball 5, according to a news release. The Power Play multiplier was 3.

Ten tickets were sold nationwide that matched all five white balls to win $1 million, according to the release. One of those was sold at a 76 gas station in Sherman Oaks, according to the California State Lottery website. The others were sold in Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Two tickets also matched five white balls but won $2 million each by including the Power Play option. There were 124 tickets that won $50,000 prizes and 25 tickets that won $150,000 prizes.

The most recent Powerball jackpot winner was announced in June, when a player bought a ticket worth $204.5 million that was sold at a 7-Eleven on Woodman Avenue in Arleta.

Two out of the four Powerball jackpot winners this year have been from Southern California. In March, someone bought a ticket worth $515 million in Anaheim.

The other two Powerball winners were in January, when a player in Oregon bought a ticket worth $328.5 million, and in April, when a winner in Kentucky purchased a ticket worth $167.3 million.

The highest-ever Powerball jackpots were both won in California — in November 2022, when Edwin Castor of Altadena purchased a ticket worth $2.04 billion, and in October 2023, when a group bought a ticket valued at $1.765 billion.

Powerball tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to the release. The drawings are broadcast every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday and livestreamed on Powerball.com.

  • Powerball’s top prize grows to $1.1 billion, fifth-largest jackpot in game’s history

The Powerball jackpot continued its climb over the holiday weekend, reaching an estimated $1.1 billion, the game’s fifth-largest prize, organizers said.

No one drew all six winning numbers Saturday. The winning numbers were white balls 3, 18, 22, 27 and 33 and red Powerball 17, according to a Powerball news release.

Nine tickets across the U.S. matched all five white balls, four of which were sold in California. Those locations included two in Southern California — a 7-Eleven in Duarte and Ontario Liquor in Ontario — as well as a 7-Eleven in Milpitas and a Mobil station in Pleasant Hill.

Each of those winners will receive $1,165,399, the lottery says. In California, prize payouts are “pari-mutuel,” with the amount changing depending on how many tickets are sold for that draw and how many winners are at the same level.

If a player wins Monday’s jackpot, they would have a choice between periodic payments totaling an estimated $1.1 billion or a lump sum estimated at $498.4 million, the Powerball bulletin said.

A winner who selects the annuity option would receive one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase 5% each year.

Both prize options are calculated before taxes.

No one has won the jackpot since May 31, when a single ticket sold in California took the $204.5 million prize.

The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million, according to organizers.

YOU KNOW, A LOT OF PEOPLE CAN GAMBLE FROM TIME TO TIME WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS. BUT SOME PEOPLE DO STRUGGLE. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SIGNS THAT CERTAIN BEHAVIOR MAYBE HAS CROSSED INTO A PROBLEM TERRITORY? YEAH, AND I KIND OF ALLUDED TO IT, BUT WHEN DOES IT BECOME MORE OF AN ENJOYABLE ACTIVITY VERSUS ADDICTION? AND SO WARNING SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS REALLY ARE, ARE MORE RELATED TO THAT NEED OR DESIRE TO INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF MONEY THAT YOU’RE EXPENDING. THAT FEELING OF IRRITABILITY OR RESTLESSNESS WHEN CUTTING BACK, BEING UNABLE TO STOP DESPITE WANTING TO CONSTANTLY THINKING ABOUT GAMBLING, CHASING LOSSES, OR EVEN LYING ABOUT GAMBLING SO THAT WHEN THEY’RE STARTING TO, YOU KNOW, HAVE IMPACTS ON RELATIONSHIPS OR WORK, THAT’S WHEN WHEN THOSE BEHAVIORS BECOME VERY CONCERNING. YEAH, THAT’S THE SIGNS THERE. OKAY. SO THERE ARE SOME BENEFITS THOUGH TO THROWING YOUR HAT IN THE RING FROM TIME TO TIME. OH YEAH. THERE’S THERE’S ALWAYS THAT THAT THOUGHT IN THE BACK OF OUR MIND. IT’S IT’S ALSO FUN. OF COURSE IT CAN BE A THRILLING FEELING. PARTICIPATION. AND IN SOME OF THESE THESE TYPES OF GAMES CAN BRING THAT SENSE OF EXCITEMENT AND HOPE. ALSO JOINING SOMETHING THAT INVOLVES OTHER FOLKS AT WORK, FOR EXAMPLE, OR FRIENDS, FAMILY, IT CAN BE A SOCIAL ACTIVITY TOO. YEAH, I KNOW THERE’S A POOL GOING AROUND HERE IN THE NEWSROOM, SO IT CAN BE, BUT YOU DEFINITELY NEED TO BE MINDFUL OF THOSE SIGNS YOU MENTIONED. DOCTOR RADHAKRISHNAN, WE

D.C. continues to expand its automated traffic enforcement system.

The D.C. Department of Transportation has added new red light cameras at South Capitol Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE, Southern Avenue and Wheeler Road SE and Rhode Island Avenue and North Capitol Street NW.

The additions bring the number of cameras in the city trained on intersections to catch red light runners up to 50, according to a news release from the department.

The newest camera installations will issue warnings to drivers for 30 days. After that, the city will issue fines starting at $150 for drivers caught running a red light signal.

By far, the District’s 211 speed cameras make up the majority of automated traffic enforcement cameras in D.C.

As of Oct. 25, D.C. has identified 472 cameras it uses for law enforcement — 140 cameras monitoring bus lane infractions, 33 stop sign cameras meant to catch drivers who don’t stop for three seconds, 25 school bus cameras and 10 cameras monitoring roads for truck restrictions.

The department said speed and red light cameras are installed in areas where the city is trying to reduce the number of injury-producing crashes.

Officials with the transportation department encourage drivers to register with the city’s Ticket Alert Service for real-time notifications on any tickets received.
