    With their crossover thrash tendencies and the unrepentant attitude of singer Wattie Buchan, Scottish icons The Exploited have pushed the bounds of both punk and provocation for over 45 years. Through generations and even a handful of heart attacks, Buchan and company continue to prove that the recipe for eternal life is piss and vinegar in equal measure.

    Also featured will be California veterans Total Chaos, who embody the textbook punk
    blueprint of mohawks, anger and idealism with their street-chiseled, crust-minded hardcore. Rounding out the bill will be L.A. punks Tarah Who?.

    I say this with both love and honesty, but heavy metal is one of the most hilarious music genres. It’s an inherent truth on which the best metal parody acts play.

    Italian goofballs Nanowar of Steel, for example, take the total piss out of metal’s unique juxtaposition of intense self-seriousness and ridiculous subject material. Yes, they’re juvenile as fuck, but so is much of heavy metal’s premise.

    As for NYC opener Tragedy, their metal renditions of Bee Gees hits will both keep the party rocking and prove my long-held personal belief that passion for hard rock and the Brothers Gibb are not mutually exclusive. Succumb to the absurdity.

    ‘Enough About Me,’ says Orlando musician Jeff Ilgenfritz

    When you put about a couple decades’ worth of time into a scene as a tirelessly fertile artist who’s also a generous collaborator, you tend to rack up a lot of friends.

    That’s the story of Jeff Ilgenfritz, whose prolific footprint in the Orlando music scene has a length, width and depth that few can match. His résumé is a long and accomplished continuum of notable acts that reads like a shorthand history of Orlando music and includes Mumpsy, The Heathens, Moonmen From Mars, Luscious Lisa, Florida Slang, Corvus, Incorporated, Great Graves and more.

    Although he was either the leader or at least a core member of most of those bands, Ilgenfritz finally struck out on his own last year with the debut of solo vehicle The Real Fritz. But already it seems that he’s back to his old familial ways on the new Real Fritz album Enough About Me. As a glorious result, this sophomore collection looks more like a studded cavalcade of Orlando stars than a solo record.

    In addition to multiple bandmates in every one of the aforementioned Ilgenfritz acts, the guest list here also includes members of groups like The Sh-Booms, American Party Machine, Bob on Blonde, Dirt McCoy, The Punching Contest and Forget Myself, among others. Even though there are nearly two dozen cameos across these 10 songs, Enough About Me still plays like an unmistakably Jeff Ilgenfritz album.

    In fact, Enough About Me is more a return to Ilgenfritz’s famously effervescent indie-pop optimism than even The Real Fritz’s previous album, All In Now. Unlike the often reflective tenor of that 2023 debut, this new batch is a mostly upbeat ride of big, swaying hooks and more rock vigor than usual. Even the slower songs are still lush with melodic swells. In total, the album’s a well-stocked excursion powered by sails full of gust and gusto.

    Released on Post Records, Enough About Me now streams everywhere and atop TLU’s Spotify playlist. It’s also available on limited-edition cassette via Illuminated Paths. Better yet, hear these songs live this weekend at the Real Fritz album release show with New Eagles (8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, Stardust Video & Coffee, free).

    The rising tide of AI has flooded the public discourse of late to much anxiety from those awake enough to be concerned about human autonomy. But one local artist is surfing it with stylish insouciance by turning the technology on itself.

    While Orlando’s Will Clark is a genre vagabond whose musical work ranges wide on a spectrum that includes synthwave, video game music, anime music and dance pop, among many more, what more tidily sums him up as an artist is a specialist interest in niche digital culture. Although Clark’s work frequently uses AI, his latest album is perhaps his best, most direct parody of it to date.

    Stylistically, Doo Wop for the Digital Age is a batch of 1950s-style pop whose retro charm belies its modern slyness. Thematically, Clark says,“I wanted to create something that captures the nostalgic essence of doo-wop while addressing contemporary topics like social media apps, incels, and NFTs.” Indeed, the collection is packed with song titles like “OnlyFans Angel,” “TikTok Tick Tock,”“Snapchat Pics”and“Insta Filter Girl.” Beyond simply addressing the idea of AI, Doo Wop for the Digital Age wields its very capabilities.

    The songs were actually crafted using AI music generator Udio. The lyrics, however, are Clark’s original work and personal thoughts. The sole exception is album opener “Groovin’ With AI,” a song about ChatGPT that he felt should, (un)naturally, be written with ChatGPT. It’s a suite of songs that sound straight out of a Boomer’s record collection but that could only come from a millennial.


    Whether Doo Wop for the Digital Age is more social commentary or musical art is debatable. What’s not, however, is that it’s a whimsical work of post-modernism with a sense of both satire and irony. Doo Wop for the Digital Age is currently available on Bandcamp and YouTube.

    With a career that’s been a long, winding and deeply psychedelic odyssey of reliably unorthodox music, “expect the unexpected” is the rule when approaching the work of Orlando outsider pioneer Matt Kamm. Even so, when reviewing last year’s Crown of Horns EP, released under his longtime vehicle Tele & the Ghost of Our Lord, I thought that describing that work as “house music”would probably be the most outlandish thing I’d ever have to write about him.

    I should’ve known better.

    In his latest chameleonic twist, one that finds him inching even closer to becoming Orlando’s own Beck, Matt Kamm has now gone country. Anyone familiar with his work will know that this is way weirder than even Beyoncé or Diplo doing it. While Kamm’s shown lots of freaky folk tendencies, the new Tele & the Ghost of Our Lord double single — “Spite the Moon” b/w “Fast Asleep on the Forest Floor” — is a total plunge into country music.

    Over the past several years, Kamm’s been quietly studying country instruments like banjo, mandolin, lap steel and pedal steel. More specifically, he says, “I’ve had an obsession with pedal steel since childhood probably stemming from Santo & Johnny or Dylan’s ‘Lay Lady Lay’ but for whatever reason the instrument always seemed unattainable — both from a technical standpoint and entry-level price point.”

    Earlier this year, Kamm finally landed one. Ever since, he’s gone in on it headfirst to indulge a lifelong fantasy. The results are fascinating.

    To those who know Kamm’s work, this new release will almost certainly be his most
    surprising material to date. After all, probably the strangest thing an eccentric can do is something deeply traditional. These two songs are the most postmodern looks from Kamm ever, without even an ounce of indie abstraction.

    “After my last synthesizer jaunt, I felt like I needed to return to the basics of songwriting — start with a great song on guitar then see where it leads me,” he says. .
    “Spite the Moon” ambles and twangs through a twilight ride in an easy cowboy trot with some of Kamm’s most forthright and wistful crooning yet. “Fall Asleep on the Forest Floor,” on the other hand, is a lovely rural instrumental that’s a perfect campfire lullaby.

    While Kamm showcases his fluency on the full range of roots instruments here, he works them all into evocative and stylistically faithful settings for his budding pedal steel work. (Side note: Pedal steel players have always been in short supply in the local music community, so area Americana players, take note.)

    While the new Tele & the Ghost of Our Lord songs now stream everywhere and sit atop TLU’s Spotify playlist, they’ll also be released as a limited-edition cassette through Orlando’s Godless America Records at Kamm’s performance this weekend at Moxie Booking’s Modern Moog 2 showcase (7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, Will’s Pub, $13-$18.)

    OG edgelords Dayglo Abortions come to Orlando

    Even if you knew nothing about the Dayglo Abortions, you could probably guess the genre and decade from which they sprung just by name alone.

    But old — er, deep — punk heads know them as the veteran Canadian hardcore band that threatened mainstream decency back in the 1980s with their provocative imagery and themes. Their graphic brand of satire and shock earned them the distinction of being the first music act in Canadian history to be charged with obscenity, a rap they eventually beat in the Supreme Court of Canada.

    This show will be a rare chance to rip it up with some OG edgelords, an especially delicious prospect in the face of the pearl-clutching, neo-puritan times here in Florida right now.

    Supporting will be Austin punks The Brothels, West Palm Beach thrashers Killed by Florida, and RunnAmucks cover band Deficit of Dreams.

    Watts release long-awaited recorded debut ‘Retribution’

    With searing heat and velocity, young Orlando hardcore band Watts have been one of the most meteoric forces to rise in the area over the past year. Their following is sizable, rabid and snowballing. With only a couple of singles to their name so far, that red-hot street cred is built almost entirely on their live shows, which are volcanic affairs that incite some of the most extreme pits around. Now get ready, punks, because Watts just dropped their first ever collection and it lands like a grenade.

    With the brand-new six-song Retribution EP, Watts — the quartet of vocalist Brielle Bennett, bassist Chrissy McKeever, drummer Dakotah Walker and guitarist Nickolai Rushka — are notching a lot of firsts. It’s the band’s debut suite and features some of the very first songs they wrote. It also marks the first project that Walker recorded and mixed.

    To Walker’s credit, the record takes an approach that eschews arty indulgence for a directness that’s unvarnished and head-on. By keeping the sound clean in a way that’s more naked than polished, Watts’ brutality hits with full force and legibility. While dirtier, their first two singles (2023’s “Hard Hitter” and “Choke”) aren’t as visceral as anything here. Retribution doesn’t just rip hard, it does it with swashbuckling brinkmanship. It’s a riot of nasty guitars, bludgeoning beats and feral vocals.

    Without question, the Retribution EP is Watts’ most chiseled look to date. With pure muscle and unhinged mania, it packs all the requisite toughness to feed the hardcore need but roars with an intensity that’s refreshingly free of the male edge that’s so institutional to the genre. It’s an exhilarating snapshot of a band who are a beacon of punk’s future and whose time is now.

    Retribution now streams everywhere and atop TLU’s Spotify playlist, but no recording can ever capture the physical insanity of a Watts show. So this week at Will’s Pub, go get the full experience when Montgomery Drive and The Coop present Watts’ release show, also featuring Baltimore’s Gasket and Jacksonville’s Flask.     For those who like their headbanging scattered, smothered and covered, here’s a heaping sampler of trailer-park metal. That’s not me being condescending — just ask Orlando headliner Bodybox, whose frenzied, drug-obsessed death metal comes in titles like “Doublewide Stomp,” “Angeldust” and “Resin Scraper.”

    As for Virginia’s Restrictor Plate, well, let’s see: They’re a death-grind band named after a racecar part and their music is self-described as “NASCORE.” In the event those clues were too subtle for you, songs like “Slamtona” and “Earnhardt Stomp”should complete the picture.

    Finally, Florida’s Chain Gang specialize in the kind of tough-guy beatdown sound that’s custom-built for cage fighters to enter the ring. Oh yes, maximum ass will be kicked.

    Melanie Martinez plays the Kia Center in Orlando

    While Melanie Martinez’s whims and presentation sometimes make me burst into laughter, you gotta give big credit to anyone trying to tilt the pop landscape to the left. The fact that Martinez is both mainstream-huge and fucking weird as shit makes her a special kind of cool. Her sound is modern and accessible, but everything behind it is arty to the point of absurdity.

    This bill is loaded with opening acts worth seeing on their own. With a melodic instinct that rivals Alvvays, Chicago’s Beach Bunny are seriously one of today’s best indie-rock bands. Rounding out the lineup are buzzing Montreal indie-pop band Men I Trust and new L.A. alt-pop artist Sofia Isella.

    For the past year, Orlando punk brutes Thrull have been gradually steeling their knuckles on stages around town opening for heavy hitters like Crowbar, the HIRS Collective and Primitive Man. Recently, though, they got official with the release of debut EP Hard Mental Reset.

    Although new, Thrull are a young all-star band with deep experience from some of the smartest pockets in the Orlando heavy underground. The trio — Michael Scotto (guitar/vocals), Julio Felix (drums/vocals) and Justin Fontes (bass/vocals) — have an impressive collective résumé that includes Witchbender, Ad Nauseum, Freakazoid, Burn to Learn and Emporos. But they first came together as bandmates in now-defunct death-grind group Flying Limbs.

    While the members played their current instruments in Flying Limbs, none of them con- tributed vocals. In this new band, they make up for that threefold. Summoning the notable vocal experience that each of them have, Thrull is a three-headed Hydra capable of high-wire singing, fiery punk shouts and metal growls all in rapid succession.

    On their five-song debut, Thrull harness the fires of hardcore, metal and noise rock to forge an impressively simian storm. Combining unchained rage and thoughtful dynamics, they’re both savage and intelligent like a gorilla. But Thrull are out to destroy, not get academic

    Nothing about Hard Mental Reset feels overthought. Recorded in a single day at Orlando’s Red Lion Recording Studio, the blunt-force EP hits with raw, thrilling immediacy. It’s a clinic in bare brutality and an exciting introduction to these new contenders.
